Education Is The Key To Poetry Analysis
"Education is the key to success"
I have chosen the theme "Education is the key to success". I feel that poetry is one of the best manners to express the importance of education. I will elaborate using three poems namely, "My parents kept me away from children who were rough" and "Elementary school; classroom in a slum" by Stephan Spender and "Blue Umbrellas" by D. J. Enright. The first poem I will analyze is "My parents kept me away from children who were rough" bye Stephan Spender. This is a poem about a boy who was confronted by lower class boys whom his parents did not like. His parents warned him to stay away from them. Although the boy was warned, the boy still found himself admiring certain elements of the "rough" children's lives. But he was still afraid of their bullying ways. In the first stanza "My parents kept me away from children who were rough/ and threw words like stones and who wore torn clothes." The word...show more content...

The speaker says he is more afraid of these boys than he is afraid of tigers. Stanza 2 line 2 reads "And their jerking hands and their knees tight on my arms." This implies that these children have made physical contact with the speaker; they were probably tugging on the speakers clothes and trying to talk to him. At some stage they kneeled on the speakers arms to keep him secured on the ground. In the last stanza line 4, the speaker says, "I longed to forgive them, yet they never smiled." This means that the speaker attempted to make friend with them but 'the never smiled'; these rough children did not try as hard as the speaker did. They did not try to worthy to be forgiven. The speaker's parents kept their child away from the rough children, so that the speaker could get an education. The parents knew that if the speaker associated himself with those children, his education will not be his key to

Famous spiritual leader and philosopher Swami Vivekananda, once said the way to success is to "Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life– think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone." To me this quote embodies what is it takes to be successful. Much like a marathon the goal isn't to come in first place and win but to simply finish and to do that you have to want to keep going, the pace at which you do so is irrelevant as long as you finish. Success has no definite definition like love it has many different meanings and holds true to different things for different people. Although society has its claims on what...show more content...
The only guidelines this "10,000 hour rule" falls under in terms of success is the dedication put forth. Gladwell exclaims that "Practice isn't the thing you do once you're good. It's the thing you do that makes you good." If you are willing and able to practice something for 10,000 hours you have shown an immense amount of dedication already therefore in a way becoming in Gladwell's eyes successful. I believe that success is different for everyone. To say that doing 10,000 hours of something will make you successful is irrational much like love you can't measure success under such terms. To some doing something for 5 hours is enough to personally fulfill their their goal and happiness. In my opinion looking from a younger generations eyes this is setting up for disappointment and failure to tell someone they can only be truly successful at something is if they practicing for 10,000 is insane. Although there is much truth to this, the reality is most people don't set out to be the greatest of all time but the greatest in their hearts and perhaps practicing for just 2 hours a day for a month is enough for them to appreciate what they have done or learned. Although it can be argued that children with a better upbringing may be able to reach success because they were taught to not always accept the answer "no", does not mean other children can not reach success. A study that Gladwell bought up in his book the Outliers, shows that children
