DUOMO 1 Among one of the most important Gothic buildings in the world, the church constructed over a period of 450 years is the symbol of Milan. To experience the Duomo at its most majestic you must ascend to the roof. Map F4 GALLERIA VITTORIO EMANUELE II 2 Sometimes known as “the living-room of the Milanese”, this elegant, four-storey arcade, housing luxury cafés and famous designer shops, is covered by a glass barrel vault and a beautiful glass cupola. Map F4 CASTELLO SFORZESCO 3 The ancient seat of the ruling Visconti, it was later rebuilt by Francesco Sforza and is now simply known by the Milanese as “Il Castello”. and libraries. Its park is a favourite with old and young alike. Map E4 CENACOLO VINCIANO 4 One of the most famous attractions in the world, “The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci is a 15th century large mural painting representing the scene of the last supper of Jesus narrated in the Gospel. This fragile masterpiece was painted by Leonardo using a technique that was chemically imperfect and by the early 16th century it has started to flake and decay, resulting in numerous restorations. Map D4 PALAZZO REALE 5 Formerly the residence of all those who governed Milan, from Napoleon to the Royal House of Savoy, the Royal Palace is currently

one of the most important cultural centres in the city, hosting exhibitions of international renown. Near the Duomo, it’s the perfect place to escape the crowds of the Duomo’s square. Map F5 PIAZZA SCALA 6 The perfect location for the Gallerie d’Italia Museum and the opera house Teatro alla Scala. In the center of the square is the monument dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci. BRERA DISTRICT 8 This is an artsy neighbourhood which really comes to life at night. The Pinacoteca di Brera is one of the most important museums in Milan. Its permanent collections offer a wealth of exceptionally good Italian and foreign masterpieces. districts. The heart of the area is the large raised square dedicated to architect and designer Gae Aulenti. An all-Italian MITO

A feast of music that is defined as popular but is cultured at the same time. And an evocative theme: “spirits”, midway between the sacred and the profane. This 14th edition of the festival speaks to the listener’s heart and soul, but also of those performing some of the most sophisticated pieces of classical and contemporary music. The 2020 edition, with 80 concerts over fifteen days, every afternoon and evening, proposes to bring together music enthusiasts of all ages in a moment of “spiritual” rebirth. MILAN AND TURIN TOGETHER As every year, the event takes place in Milan and Turin, two cities that will exchange their artists daily, according to an extensive programme the details of which are shown on the website. The schedule proposes a 18 W H E R E M I L A N I S E P T E M B E R 2 020

winning mix, exclusively prepared for MITO, of pieces from the classical repertoire and contemporary music, some even being performed for the first time. In this special edition marking the return to live music before an audience, foreign artists will not be performing due to the obvious current logistical difficulties in travel: this will therefore be an all-Italian MITO with guests such as conductors Ottavio Dantone, Michele Mariotti and Alessandro Cadario, cellists Mario Brunello, Enrico Dindo and Giovanni Sollima and pianists Andrea Lucchesini, Benedetto Lupo, Emanuele Arciuli, Filippo Gamba, Davide Cabassi, Filippo Gorini, Bruno Canino and Antonio Ballista. A new formula for the concerts too: without intervals and lasting approximately 1 hour, with double programming for evenings. The Milan venues chosen are the Teatro Dal Verme, the Teatro Bruno Munari, Spazio Teatro 89, the Teatro Delfino and the Teatro Elfo Puccini, with two mornings to listen to sacred music in the Church of Sant'Alessandro in Zebedia on Sunday 6 September and in the Abbey of Santa Maria Rossa in Crescenzago on 13 September. PROTAGONIST OF THE SILVER SCREEN The festival will close in Turin (Teatro Regio) on 18 and in Milan (Teatro Dal Verme) on 19 September with a concert entitled “Cinema”. In the spotlight are the pages of

classical music borrowed by the silver screen: from Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Johannes Brahms, present in the film “The Great Dictator” by Charlie Chaplin (1940), to the Nocturne from String Quartet No. 2 in D major by Alexander Borodin, included in the soundtrack of “The Living Daylights” directed by John Glen (1987), to Souvenir de Florence op. 70 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, which can be heard in “The Gambler” by Karel Reisz (1974), and finally Piano Concert No. 1 in C minor op. 35 by Dmitri Shostakovic with orchestra accompaniment of strings and trumpet. www.mitosettembremusica.it

The charm of the Bagni Misteriosi

Milan’s theatre season is resuming in the unique setting of a former bathing centre from the 1930s, located in the Porta Romana area. It is precisely in what is not just an openair swimming pool (to experience during the daytime) but a genuine location of culture (to visit in the evening, also at aperitif time) that the great theatre director and artistic director of the Teatro Franco Parenti, Andrée Ruth Shammah, has devised and organised the summer in the city: a new life for the theatre after the long period of forced closure of artistic activities. In the evening in the swimming pool, which is open with two sessions during the day, the floating platform is transformed into a stage with an arena with no less than 500 seats all around it, fully respecting the anticontamination regulations. Among the appointments not to be missed, on 15-16 September “Le Sacre”, with Luciana Savignano (see photo), a site-specific show that has involved generations of dancers. www.teatrofrancoparenti.com

n a city as cosmopolitan and open to innovation as Milan, it is no surprise that art finds a place even in unconventional locations, in dialogue with nature and urban architectures, blending in with them. Thanks to the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, which has carried out an official mapping of public art in Italy, now those who love spending a pleasant time outside and who don’t have time on their side can find the visiting experience to suit them, to discover the sites of contemporary art in Milan.

“Needle, Thread and Knot” PIAZZA CADORNA

Places that are at a distance from each other, such as the fountain and the square of Cadorna Station, are joined together virtually by a yellow, red and green needle and knotted thread, a metaphor for the lines of the Milanese underground, which connected up the city as early as the 1990s. PIAZZA GAE AULENTI A glass ogival structure designed by Alberto Garutti at the foot of the UniCredit Tower reveals 23 chromed brass tubes, which, almost like long trumpets, create communication - also in sound terms - between different storeys of the building that are apparently distant and without any relationship with each other.

PIAZZA AFFARI The name of this large statue outside the Milan Stock Exchange is the acronym for “libertà, odio, vendetta, eternità” (i.e.freedom, hatred, revenge, eternity), but the real meaning of the middle finger of sculptor Maurizio Cattelan is intentionally ambiguous. A provocation? You be the judge of that!

Graffiti

Graffiti are among the undisputed protagonists of Milanese contemporary art. All areas of the city, particularly those around the San Siro Racecourse, are dotted with masterpieces by the exponents of local street art. Look out for them; they deserve much more than a photo.

The “green” revolution Organic drinking is now an established tendency, a trend that is constantly growing in Italy, due both to the demand from consumers who are more sensitive to the themes of sustainability and to the increase in certified organic land, but also due to the increase in the numbers of new

wine bars solely devoted to organic, biodynamic or natural wines. In recent years lifestyles that are attentive to and respectful of nature have also led to the choosing of products with less impact on nature and with higher quality and improved production ethics. BY CORNELIA G. HASSMÜLLER

Initially an idea for a few “wine anarchists”, this has nevertheless launched a major movement that has brought natural, biodynamic and organic wines to everybody’s lips. Indeed, today orange wines are appreciated by the public at large as the fourth colour of wine with its own specific identity. Today we can say that green wines present themselves as being of excellent quality, produced with the necessary care and (often) flawlessly. There are three main green categories, which it is important to get to know for an aware purchase, because organic, biodynamic and natural are not synonymous.

et’s go back in history: the very first finds indicating wine growing date back to 7000 years ago and take us to Georgia, the cradle of wine, where amphorae have been found with traces of white wine inside them. Mankind gradually refined the method of producing wine, changing the processes of production and its nature (and often turning it on its head). Around 20 years ago a trend of return to the origins began with the rebirth of white wines in the amphora, so-called “Orange Wines” (in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Slovakia and Georgia), where the vinification of white

> Natural wine: it has not had any legal recognition by the European certifying bodies. The term groups together many winemaking styles inspired by the naturalness of the process, envisaging the smallest possible number of interventions in the vineyard and the wine cellar, the absence of chemical additives and of handling by man. In Italy there are various associations of producers that are carrying forward the idea of a “cleaner” viticulture.

> Organic wine: it is governed by European regulation 203 of 2012, which states that every producer of organic wine requires a certificate of compliance that allows the use of the mark or the wording on the label. It refers to the reduction of chemical interventions, both in the vineyard and in the wine cellar, with the limitation of sulphites, the elimination of chemical substances, the reduction of use of water resources and the prohibition of use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the vineyard. > Biodynamic wine: in addition to being organic, biodynamic wines are produced following the spiritual vision of philosopher Rudolf Steiner and his idea of nature in equilibrium. Thanks to the phases of the moon, it is necessary to keep the land balanced in a natural way with all its organisms, with natural interventions and the use of only biodynamic preparations (natural composts) in given phases of the year. Although it is not yet recognised at legislative level, the Demeter association regulates the process with the maximum quantities for sulphites, no use of chemicals and a reduced use of machinery.

TAX-FREE SHOPPING

By law, non-EU residents are entitled to reclaim the VAT paid on items purchased and exported from the EU: before finalizing a purchase, they should ask the shop assistant whether they are eligible for a tax refund.

Reservations for most restaurants are strongly advised. In Italy, service is included in the price meaning that although tipping is not compulsory, it is obviously appreciated as a sign of satisfaction. Some menus include the word “coperto”, a small surcharge corresponding to the cost of the service and bread. Although no dress code exists in Italy, semiformal clothing is usually considered de rigeur at restaurants. agni Misteriosi’ (The Mysterious Baths), is an evocatively named complex that is a part of the artistic and historic heritage of the city of Milan, located in the city’s vibrant Porta Romana district. Its structure is that of the former Centro Balneare Caimi, which dates back to the 1930s, and has been painstakingly restored, with the two large pools and surrounding spaces returned to their original splendour. This complex was originally conceived as a multi-purpose space with sports facilities, including rooms for boxing and fencing, a doctor’s office, a library and even 56 W H E R E M I L A N I S E P T E M B E R 2 020

a printing works, and was part of the current headquarters of the adjacent Teatro Franco Parenti. In addition to the two original pools, which have been completely restructured, the complex boasts a tennis court, and a large terrace, plus a bar and restaurant, surrounded by greenery, thanks to the paths shaded by flowers and creepers planted along both its borders. Excluding summer, its changing rooms are used to host workshops, exhibitions and events. The Bagni Misteriosi complex, named after the famous work by Giorgio de Chirico on display at the Museo del Novecento, is a peaceful haven in the heart of Milan. You can cool off in its two large pools from June to the end of September, all day and in the evenings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 11pm. There is a pool for adults, with a depth ranging from 1.25 to 1.70m, with several lanes for freestyle swimming, and one for children, with a depth ranging from 60 to 90cm). Daviddi Our tour begins on the outskirts of Milan at the 17th-century Villa Arconati 1 (www.villaarconati-far.it). Known also as ‘the small Versailles of Lombardy’, it is set within the vast green spaces of the Groane Park in Bollate. This is a splendid example of Lombardy Baroque architecture and visitors are welcomed in its frescoed rooms, while summer evenings are jazzed up with a series of concerts and events in its magnificent gardens. We recommend a visit to the Villa Visconti Borromeo Litta 2 (www. villalittalainate.it) which is just a short distance away in Lainate. This neo-classical jewel of architecture is surrounded by a lovely park that earned the title of the ‘Most Beautiful Historical Park in Italy’ in 2016. The Villa is renowned for its Nyphaeum and spectacular water features. A mixture of sacred and profane – the Metropolitan City area is interspersed with numerous abbeys. In fact, there are so many that there is even a Road of Abbeys (www.stradadelleabbazie.it). Our route starts from the Abbey of Chiaravalle 3 , dominated by an imposing, richly frescoed 14th-century bell tower, and continues onwards to the Abbey of Viboldone 4 , one the most beautiful medieval complexes in Lombardy, until we reach Mirasole 5 , a 13th-century monastery which, with its numerous moats, resembles a fortress. After travelling for a few more kilometers, in a southwesterly direction, we come to the Abbey of Morimondo 6 , a former Cistercian monastery renovated in Gothic style.

EN PLEIN AIR The area housing the abbeys is also the heart of the large Parco Agricolo Sud Milano (www. parcoagricolosudmilano. it). 6 The Park boasts a rich historic and agricultural heritage and comprises old farmsteads, waterways and important residential complexes, including Gaggiano 7 , which, with its small, pastel-coloured houses nestling on both banks of the Naviglio Grande, is well worth a visit. This charming hamlet can be accessed from the city via a scenic bicycle track skirting the canal. The Martesana Canal also offers views of rare beauty as it flows towards the Adda river. Rural centres are interspersed with expanses of greenery (an absolute must is a visit to the Adda Park which can also be crossed by bike or on horseback) and charming urban centres, including Crespi d’Adda 8 , a late 19th-century workers’ village built up around a textiles factory and a UNESCO world heritage site (www.villaggiocrespi.it). However, Milan is not only renowned for its canals. Lying on the outskirts of the city, just behind the airport of Linate, we find the Idroscalo 9 , a large artificial lake set within green surroundings (www. idroscalo.info). The area offers all types of facilities including jogging, horseback riding and bicycle paths, boat, canoe and pedalò hire, recreational fishing and even rugby pitches. A DAY DEVOTED TO CULTURE If the weather’s gloomy, don’t despair! This is a great opportunity to visit a museum! Perhaps a historic one like the Alfa Romeo Museum 10 (www.museoalfaromeo.com) in Arese, formerly home to the prestigious factory. This museum has six floors of models that have made motoring history, as well as prototypes and memorabilia. Another must-visit option is the MA*GA Museum 11 (www.museomaga.it) in Gallarate, halfway between Malpensa Airport and Milan, one of the most important contemporary art museum in Italy. It houses a collection of more than six

thousand works of art hosted in its 5,000 sq.m. For lovers of the history of aviation and of the industries that turned the dream of flight into reality, the Volandia Park and Museum 12 (www.volandia.it) narrates the epic tale of aeronautics in all its forms, from the pioneering flights of the beginning of the 20th century, up to the futuristic convertiplane, from hot-air balloons to the conquest of space along over 2 km of exhibition. WHAT’S NEW As with every ‘city on the move’, Milan is constantly enriched with new attractions. Two in particular deserve a special mention. A different perspective The Duomo Terraces are an ideal destination for lovers of photography. Dominating the top of the city from a height of 70 meters, they offer a breathtaking view over the Milanese skyline. BY GIULIA MINERO

here are few things as romantic as admiring a red-tinged sky from a panoramic position as dusk falls. Agreeing with this assumption, the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo once again offers visitors a chance to access the Rooftop Terraces in summer, with extended visiting hours from 9am to 7pm (FriSat-Sun until 8pm), 7 days a week. After climbing 251 steps, or taking the elevator on the left side of the cathedral, the Terraces are revealed in all their majesty, offering visitors an unmatched 58 W H E R E M I L A N I S E P T E M B E R 2 020

panoramic view, and a chance to wander amidst flying buttresses, 135 pink Candoglia marble spires and 180 statues, depicting saints and other religious and historical figures. The tour, reserved for small groups, also offers visitors a unique opportunity to admire the golden Madonnina close-up, discover the Duomo from a different perspective, and learn about the secrets behind its Gothic architecture from professional guides. Different ticket options, which can also be booked online, are available. You can either purchase a ticket that only allows access to the rooftop terraces or opt for a 90-minute Fast-Track Duomo Tour. Museo del Duomo Totally refurbished in 2013, the museum houses and highlights all the material not presently in use in the Duomo, linked to its history and construction. Comprising 2,000 square metres of space, twenty seven rooms and thirteen thematic areas, the museum hosts more than two hundred sculptures and over seven hundred gypsum models and then again paintings, stained glass windows, tapestries and architectural models ranging from the 15th century to the present day. Worthy of particular note are the rooms of the Tesoro, Tintoretto’s “Jesus Among the Doctors”, the imposing wooden model of the cathedral built in 1519 and the tiles of the fifth door of the Duomo by Lucio Fontana and Luciano Minguzzi.
