PALAZZO DUCALE, UNTIL 25 MARCH 2022 SIXTEEN CENTURIES OF VENICE
ART 421-2021. This year Venice celebrates its 1600th anniversary with a monumental exhibition in the place that symbolises the power and glory of the Serenissima: the Doge’s Palace in St Mark’s Square. A great illustrated story that aims to tell the myth of Venice through the centuries, with a scenographic layout divided into 12 sections. Visitors can retrace the salient stages of the history and identity of Venice, which had to redesign their future several times through works and documents by the greatest artists who have worked in the lagoon over almost a millennium – Carpaccio, Bellini, Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo, Rosalba Carriera, Guardi and Canaletto, right up to Canova, Hayez, Appiani; and then Pollock, Vedova, Tancredi, Santomaso – but also the many architects, talented men of art, writers and musicians who have accompanied its development. The last room is an invitation to reflect on the future, on safeguarding the heritage of this city and on the search for sustainability.

PALAZZO GRASSI, UNTIL 9 JANUARY 2022
IMMERSIVE JOURNEY IN THE LAGOON CITY
HYPERVENEZIA. Palazzo Grassi. Campo San Samuele, 3231 www.palazzograssi.it PHOTOGRAPHY An exhibition specifically dedicated to the city of Venice on the occasion of the 1600th anniversary of its foundation. A show presenting to the public for the first time the #VeniceUrbanPhotoProject conceived and realised by Mario Peliti, who since 2006 has been mapping the city in an ambitious archive of photographs of the city of Venice, which has reached over 12,000 shots to date, all in black and white and with no people around.

SPARC, UNTIL 9 JANUARY 2022
TRAVEL SNAPSHOTS
PHOTOGRAPHY Twenty or so black and white shots explore the theme of travel as a boundless desire for discovery, halfway between a sense of freedom and a fear of the unknown. Venetian photographer Massimiliano Camellini focuses on everyday objects that reveal stories of life on the ship, the symbolic space of the voyage. The Venetian SPARC space where VeniceArtFactory has chosen to set up the exhibition is interesting: a perfect setting for this show hosted in an old private house on the lagoon with a panoramic view over the canals and the history of navigation in the ancient maritime republic.

TEATRO GOLDONI, 9-12 DECEMBER
BAROQUE AND SENSUAL GOLDONI
THEATRE The theatrical and compositional history of Carlo Goldoni’s “I due gemelli veneziani” (1747) is a fascinating journey and recalls the spirit of the group of actors who dominated the European theatre scenes in the late 16th and late 18th centuries. Here, the characters cannot keep their emotions in check, which alternately causes laughter or touches on tragedy. Goldoni’s comedy is an amusement machine of duels, love affairs, escapes and rediscoveries, in which the expedient of identical but characteristically opposite twins stands out. The venue in which this play is staged is remarkable: the Carlo Goldoni Theatre, the oldest theatre in Venice that still exists today and was inaugurated in 1622.

ISOLA DI SAN GIORGIO, 21 NOVEMBER 2021 - 13 MARCH 2022
CELEBRATING VENINI’S ANNIVERSARY
GLASS ART Two separate and parallel exhibitions are hosted at “Le Stanze del Vetro” and recount the Murano experiences of two great artists at work in the Venini furnace: the Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala and the Italian painter and illustrator Toni Zuccheri. There are 200 glassworks on display, produced in the second half of the 1960s, collected to celebrate Venini's centenary. Different in style and personality, the two artists contributed in those years to characterise the production of artistic glassworks, proposing new models without renouncing the use of colour, but also by responding to the new trends of essentiality coming from the world of design. Free entrance.

BEYOND THE BORDERS
ART Peggy Guggenheim challenged boundaries as a patron and collector and is celebrated for her groundbreaking European and American modern art collection. The “Migrating Objects” exhibition focuses on a lesser-known but crucial episode in Guggenheim’s collecting process: her turn in the 1950s and ’60s to works created by artists in Africa, Oceania, and the indigenous Americas. A remarkable occasion to view 35 rarely seen nonWestern artworks in dialogue with European works from her collection by avant-garde artists who borrowed ideas from cultures beyond Europe’s borders.

DIALOGUE BETWEEN ANCIENT AND CONTEMPORARY
ARCHITECTURE Two new projects reinforce the dialogue between the ancient and the contemporary, in a unique place in the architectural and historical-artistic panorama of the city. The refurbishment of “La Sala del Doge”, which will return to its Renaissance splendour, and the “Archinto” exhibition featuring new works by German artist Georg Baselitz, some of which were created specifically for the Palazzo, will remain on loan to the museum. This is the first time in Venice that we have seen such a collaboration between a contemporary artist and a state museum.

TEATRO LA FENICE, 15-19 DECEMBER
THE “OTHER” SWAN LAKE
DANCE Choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot, director of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, has made a personal reinterpretation of “The Swan Lake” with this interpretation that sheds new light on the mythical story of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette. In yet another contrast between good and evil, the love story between Siegfried and Odette - the victim of a spell that forces her to live as a swan during the day and only at night does she regain her human form - is transformed into a clash between ambitious and dominant maternal figures. A fusion of classical ballet and modern dance that gives life to a dramatic but at the same time sensual performance.

MARIA CALLAS ON SHOW AT LA FENICE
EXHIBITION Located on the third floor of the Teatro La Fenice opera house, a permanent photographic exhibition is dedicated to the divine opera star Maria Callas and includes pictures that portray her over seven Venetian seasons. Archive photos, manuscripts and images serve as an important testimony to the artistic career of one of opera’s most legendary performers, highlighting her close relationship with both the city and its theatre, because it was here that she made her first Italian debut which marked the turning point in her career. NAUMAN'S CONTEMPORARY EXPERIMENTS
CONTEMPORARY ART “Bruce Nauman: Contrapposto Studies”, curated by Carlos Basualdo and Caroline Bourgeois in close collaboration with the artist himself, is part of the series of monographic exhibitions organised by Palazzo Grassi with the active participation of the artist at the heart of the show. The major exhibition dedicated to Bruce Nauman (1941, Indiana, USA) is an homage to one of the major figures of the international contemporary art scene and to his constant exploration of the artist studio as a space where creation takes place, of the body through performances and of sound. The unique exhibition at Punta della Dogana brings together older works and most recent ones, some of which have never been shown in Europe before. The exhibition in Venice is focused on a series of recent video installations that Nauman has developed in the last five years and which are related to a single channel video from 1968: “Walk with Contrapposto.”

THE PALACE OF DOGE GRIMANI IS REBORN
On the occasion of the celebrations for the 1600th anniversary of the birth of Venice, Palazzo Vendramin Grimani, the 18th-century residence of the humanist doge Pietro Grimani, opens to the public. The precious 16th-century building on the Grand Canal will guide visitors on a journey through the paintings in the Grimani Albero d’Oro family’s collections, as well as unpublished photographs by Patrick Tourneboeuf, which tell the story of the palace before and after the work. WORK IN PROGRESS AT THE GALLERIE DELL’ACCADEMIA
The world’s largest collection of Veneto art has reopened in recent months, making visitors return to the corridor designed by Andrea Palladio (after two years of restoration): an absolute premiere while waiting for the new exhibition layout. The rearrangement work will gradually lead to the opening of new sections, such as the room dedicated to the ceiling reconstruction in Palazzo Corner Spinelli, painted by Giorgio Vasari, the opening of a room dedicated to the Bassano canvases, and the setting up of a new room for the exhibition of graphic masterpieces from the Cabinet of Drawings, one of the richest collections in Italy, with no less than 20 drawings by Leonardo da Vinci. The Gallerie dell’Accademia has also announced that British Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor will be the first British artist to be honoured with a major exhibition at the museum. The exhibition, postponed from 2021 because of the pandemic, will be presented during the Venice International Art Biennale in 2022, opening on 20 April and running until 9 October 2022.

CASA DEI TRE OCI, UNTIL 9 JANUARY 2022
AUTHOR’S GLANCES

MARIO DE BIASI. Fotografie 1947-2003 Casa dei Tre Oci. Giudecca, 43. www.treoci.org PHOTOGRAPHY An extensive retrospective devoted to one of Italy's greatest photographers, a tireless narrator of the world, Mario De Biasi. 216 photographs, half of them previously unpublished, recount major historical events, exotic journeys, portraits of powerful and famous people, scenes from everyday life or anonymous faces, right through to conceptual and abstract works. Considered a “neo-realist photoamateur”, De Biasi is a witness to a 20th century that today seems distant - his images of Italy with his desire for rebirth after the devastation of war, or certain memorable views of New York are famous - but also capable of an intimate look at nature and people.

DON’T PLAY WITH GLASS
GLASS No longer a “do not touch” glass exhibition, but a true interactive and multimedia installation, a real “playroom” in which the visitor can play and be amazed, feeling like a child again. The project involves fourteen Murano glass masters from as many companies that are licensees of the Vetro Artistico® Murano brand, who have put themselves to the test for this occasion, tackling a subject that is very different from their usual production. In Murano Glass Toys the glass lives, moves and interacts with the spectator: a magical atmosphere in which visitors can experience or relive emotions linked to their childhood and adolescence.

PALAZZO BONVICINI, 27 FEBRUARY 2022
SENSORY EXHIBITION AT THE PALACE
INSTALLATION Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Victorian novel “Alice in Wonderland”, this “Alice in Doomedland” addresses one of the most topical issues of contemporary society: the “redefinition of identity”, our place in the world, in the wake of the pandemic. The exhibition at Palazzo Bonvicini establishes a powerful visual and experiential dialogue, with a teamwork of both professional artists and students of the American non-profit organisation Publicolor, which promotes the reintegration of marginalised young people into society through art therapy.

TEATRINO DI PALAZZO GRASSI, 1 AND 4 DECEMBER, 15 JANUARY
WHERE ART AND THEATRE COME TOGETHER
PERFORMANCE The Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi has opened up to a new field of activity, presenting its first site-specific exhibition project: Gestus, curated by Video Sound Art. The new format presents a collective show incorporating video works, installations and performances. Conceived as an everevolving body, it consists of two acts - as per the tradition of theatrical performances - each of which features two artists, joined by a chorus of performers. Following the segmentation of physical actions expressed in the first act (15 October-24 November), the second act (1 December-15 January) marks a recomposition: the works reflect upon the physical exploration of urban space, proposing models for utopian cities and upending the concept of justice to create paradoxical dynamics.
