From The Head of School Not that long ago, the daily mail delivery was something to look forward to. Envelopes arrived with our names on them with letters inside. Handwritten letters. Handwritten letters from people we knew. Boxes even. It was fun.

Now, getting mail has gone from thrill to annoyance. So many pounds of miscellaneous roughage; it goes straight from the mailbox to the recycling bin without a second glance. Well, in my case, there’s one exception. I pause on the fundraising pieces. I pause because I know that somewhere, dedicated people are working hard to do the right thing, and because good causes deserve our attention.

You have chosen to make Wheeler a “good cause” this year, and for that I am grateful on behalf of the entire Wheeler community. You have recognized that tuitions only cover 80% of our costs, and that fundraising helps cover the rest. Your donation is a recognition that without philanthropic support this would be a good, but not great, school for our children. And our children deserve great schools.

NOTEWORTHY — Advanced Placement —In Spring 2010, 127 Wheeler students sat for 229 Advanced Placement examinations in Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Chinese, Computer Science, Economics, English Language, English Literature, Environmental Science, French Language, German, Latin-Vergil, Spanish Language, Statistics, Studio Art - 2D Design and U.S. History. 91% of the tests received scores of 3 or better, 80% of the tests received scores of 4 or better.

• 2009-2010 NE Math League Regional Results — Sixth Grade Standings: #1 in Rhode Island: Wheeler School; Seventh Grade Standings: #2 in Rhode Island: Wheeler School; Eighth Grade Standings: Wheeler ranked #10 in NE League; Top 20 Students in League: Charlie Nickerson tied for #1 and among Eighth Graders: #1 in Rhode Island: Wheeler School.

• Community Service Student Reflection — “I truly realized on the service day that it’s the small things that count. Although I was working on a small part of the garden, I was helping plants grow for the future. This concept was new for me, because I always want the end product. I learned that it’s about the journey, not the destination that counts. It was hard work but fun at the same time. I really felt like I was making a difference in a community.”

AND THE WINNER IS . . . GOLD — THANK YOU to everyone who made a gift during our Race to Field Day Participation Challenge. The numbers are in, and the GOLDS also won the Alumni Spirit Challenge. The score was 3,466 for the Golds and 3,356 for the Purples. It was a close competition, but the GOLDS came out on top. One point was awarded to each team for each dollar contributed to the Annual fund by alumni from May 1st – May 15, 2010.

The Race to Field Day Participation Challenge provides a fun opportunity for alumni to get into the spirit of Field Day and relive the competition between Purples and Golds.

NOTEWORTHY — Upper School science teacher Chris Perkins was selected as a recipient of the 2010 Yale Educator Award. Chris was nominated by Stephen Hall ’10 as “an outstanding educator who made a difference in his life.”

The award is sponsored by Yale’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions to recognize “educators from around the world who have inspired and supported their students to achieve at high levels.” Of the 269 people nominated, 30 teachers were selected. Perkins has been a member of the Wheeler School faculty since 1997.

NOTEWORTHY — Third Year for National Theater Program Honors

Providence’s Trinity Repertory Company has nominated Wheeler for the third time to the American High School Theatre Festival.

Schools selected by AHSTF are invited to attend the Fringe Festival in Scotland, the world’s largest and most prestigious arts festival in the world. The whole city becomes a stage and visitors can view performances everywhere from playgrounds to conference rooms to city parks to churches. Upper School actors took part in the 2009 Fringe, performing excerpts from “Book Of Days.”

More Than a Summer Program Providence Summerbridge at Wheeler is the only outof-school time program in the state that utilizes a “students teaching students” model to empower low-income, first generation college-bound middle school students to succeed as students and leaders, inside and outside the classroom.
