The Honorary Degrees

Access to high-quality medical care administered by dedicated physicians enables the well-being and success of an individual and their community. Dr. Carol Samuels-Botts, over nearly four decades your unwavering advocacy for medical ethics and commitment to supporting the needs of patients has helped to provide comprehensive pediatric health care to countless children.

A fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, you built a sterling reputation as a conscientious professional and patient-centered practitioner, passionately serving young patients throughout your career. During your two terms as a director on the Maryland Board of Physicians, you ensured that doctors across the state would be held to the highest of standards.

Your talent for collaboration and consensus building led the Governor of Maryland to appoint you to the state commissions on medical practice parameters, asthma and autism, where you profoundly influenced operations in each area, and earned several accolades.

Listed among the “Top Doctors” in several issues of Washingtonian magazine and a “Super Doctor” in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, you also received a State of Maryland Governor’s Citation.

You have remained committed to serving others in retirement by volunteering as a medical clinician, sharing your insights as a guest speaker for the AARP and by engaging others in the joy of art as a docent and tour guide at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery.

As a generous supporter and highly active alumna, you helped strengthen our community by establishing the college’s Black Alumni Association; you provided invaluable guidance during your terms on both the Alumni Board of Directors and Board of Trustees; and you continue to participate in regional college events.

Dr. Carol Samuels-Botts, we are inspired by your dedication and leadership. It is our great pleasure to present to you this honorary Doctor of Science.

2

Save a seat for others, make room for others, extend opportunity to others. That is the true source for sustaining joy. You spoke those words at Harvard University’s 2022 graduation, Lawrence Bacow; you have lived them as an educator, scholar and higher education leader. In doing so, you have contributed greatly to repairing a broken world.

During your tenure as Harvard’s president, you advocated for public service, diversity and inclusion, creating knowledge and expanding access to opportunity. The breadth of your work extends from the university’s reckoning with the legacy of slavery to advancing the study of climate and sustainability, the management of cities, and natural and artificial intelligence. You championed opening wide the doors of the academy as the president of Tufts University, establishing its office of institutional diversity, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where you served as a faculty leader and the institute’s chancellor.

You also have shared generously your expertise and insight, creating opportunities for others through your service to the White House, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Council on Education, to name just a few. This college, and all who are members of the Wheaton community, have benefited from your wisdom, thanks to your distinguished 10 years of service on the Board of Trustees.

To this work, you brought humor, humility and practicality, achieving an impressive pace for change. Who else but you would schedule meetings during a morning run? Those sessions fostered personal connections to students. You said: “When we’re on a run, we’re all just runners. There are no barriers.”

We are deeply grateful for your dedication to removing barriers to education and expanding opportunity. It is our great pleasure to present you, Lawrence Bacow, with this honorary Doctor of Laws.

3

At a tenuous time in American history, when the loudest voices seem to be those that divide us, it takes courage and creativity to speak up for the importance of finding common ground.

Mónica Guzmán, you have chosen this daunting challenge. As an accomplished journalist, author, podcast host, advisor and workshop facilitator, you foster connections, interactions and conversations among those who possess different and often opposing viewpoints.

Your work as co-founder of the award-winning Seattle newsletter The Evergrey has brought together residents and created a strong sense of community through its content, earning you a spot on the 50 Most Influential Women in Seattle list.

You build bridges by inviting us to ask questions and truly listen to understand rather than to judge. You do this in your book, I Never Thought of It That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times, which gained recognition from The New York Times, Reader’s Digest and The Christian Science Monitor.

Your podcast, “A Braver Way,” equips individuals with the tools needed to narrow the political divide. Your insight as an advisor helps organizations Starts With Us and the Generations Over Dinner project support constructive communication.

Through fellowships at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University, the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, and the University of Florida, you have continued your efforts to learn and educate others about how to work together to better understand differing perspectives.

Mónica Guzmán, for being a champion of curiosity and showing us that we can disagree without disconnecting, it gives us great joy to present you with this honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
