Workplace Mental Health Our Employer Advisor, Mal Malloch, recently attended ‘Bottom Line 2016’, a conference on improving mental health in Canadian workplaces. Some interesting facts came out of the conference: • In any given week, 500,000 Canadians are unable to work due to mental-health problems or illnesses • 70% of Canadians are concerned about psychological health and safety in their workplaces • In Canada, one-third of disability claims relate to mental-health problems or illnesses • 70% of disability costs in the country are attributed to mental-health problems or illnesses • 14% of employees do not think their workplaces are psychologically healthy and safe. Temporary absences of good staff due to mental-health issues are costly and disruptive for employers. Losing these good workers permanently is even more serious. And of course the human cost to those workers who are dealing with these health problems can be devastating for them. We at YCC are investigating opportunities to provide Yukon employers with advice, tools, tips and tricks, and other information to help avoid the serious costs of mental-health problems and illnesses in their workplaces. Stay tuned…
