Canada Day Keeps it Fresh

ven though this is Douglas Hnatiuk’s eighth year as the chair of the Whitehorse Canada Day Committee, he and the volunteers have found ways to keep the day-long party fresh.

Since this is the Year of the Veteran, there will be a special celebration of Yukon veterans following the singing of O’Canada at noon.

Then there will be a “hip-hiphooray” at the unveiling of the Canadian flag which turns 40 this year, says Hnatiuk.

Also new, will be the inclusion of visual artists at Rotary Peace Park.

Alan Comer plays the accordion for Emma-Lee on Whitehorse’s Main Street.

World-renown Buskers will be coming to the Yukon to take part in the Longest Days Street Fair in the month of July.

But July 1st begins with a hardy pancake breakfast at 8:00 a.m. at the park. The Knights of Columbus will be charging a small fee and will have tables set up inside and outside of a tent.

The Canada Day Parade will lead Yukoners and visitors to Rotary Peace Park, starting at 11:00 a.m. at Shipyards Park.

The parade will head up Ogilvie Street to 4th Avenue then toward Main Street.

A left will take it to 2nd Avenue and to Rotary Peace Park.

Old favourite events will be waiting there as the Yukon Agricultural Association holds its annual petting zoo and free pony rides.

Besides painting faces, the Association Franco-Yukonnaise will be baking the official birthday cake for Canada: “They have great bakers, these French,” says Hnatiuk dreamily. “You know, all those pastries.”

Also at the park will be jugglers, clowns and dog handlers.

Athletics Yukon will be starting a race at Robert Service Campground at 2:15 p.m. and it will wind along the river’s trail and end at the park.

Then, at 3:00 p.m., the Rotary Club of Whitehorse will drop the rubber duckies into the water from the bridge and the one containing the name of the winner will be scooped out of the water.

Across the bridge, at the skateboarding park, Bringing Youth Toward Equality will be unveiling new equipment.

There will also be a skateboarding competition, demonstrations and a hip hop battle.

The celebration at Rotary Peace Park will end at 6:00 p.m.

And, new this year, the birthday party will serve as a kick-off to the Longest Days Street Fair.

Hnatiuk says he and the committee are open to ideas on how to make next year’s Canada Day celebrations fresh, too.

I’m Just Saying...

I

can’t believe, at my age, I am having difficulty with fashion.

It’s not like I’m still in high school where I am obligated to wear blue jeans and a polo shirt ... I’m an adult and, for good or for bad, I am a known quantity to a fair number of people.

If I change my look I am still Darrell Hookey, the guy who (fill in the blank) and thought it was funny.

Just last month, at the urging of my Yukon Wild Gamer columnist, Justin Lemphers, I bought sandals. I have never worn sandals in life ... not even to the beach. And yet, here I am, wearing sandals to the office.

Yeah, they are cooler on my dogs and I wish it were included in the dress code at my last three jobs. But there was a period of adjustment and worry as I tried to determine which is most appropriate: Sockless or socks? White socks or black socks? I was much relieved to be told by a French guy (if you have a question about fashion, just ask a French guy) that black socks were “cool”. Good, because I have a drawer full of black socks from my last job.

With that trauma behind me, I am now able to face up to the next step: A hat.

I have always believed men are not properly turned out unless they are wearing a fedora. But, alas, I was born 50 years too late. And Guys & Dolls just further teased me on this point.

Just my luck, I get to visit with men every day who didn’t get the memo that fedoras are not fashionable anymore and they blaze their own fashion trail on the glow of their own personal cool.

I’m not cool. I can’t wear a hat.

But then I saw a photo of Daniel Lanois as I was preparing a story on him. The guy is older than I am and he was wearing a toque. Okay, I don’t have Bono over for dinner and Peter Gabriel has never asked me for advice. I am not cool in the league of Daniel Lanois. But, c’mon, a toque? If he can wear a toque at his age then I can wear anything short of my underwear on my head and get away with it.

Then, for Father’s Day, I was presented with a hat to shake me from my angst of indecision. It is an Australian Outback hat. It has that Yukon Cool that I aspire to: Casual and classy at the same time.

And if you think I now wear a hat just because I have a bald spot, well, duh, you have never had sunburn on top of your head before, have you?

I am now going to squish my eyes closed tight and wish as hard as I can as I tap the heels of my sandals together three times: “Clothes do make the man; clothes do make the man; clothes do make the man.”

Northern Lights Smells of Conspiracy To My Oh-So-Valued Editor, When I last reported in to you, I was in a Klondike valley, disguised as a soldier. My investigations into The Mystery of the Northern Lights led me here and I was certain I was close to finding out how the federal government was affecting the heavenly display of Aurora Borealis. Between the artillery guns and bales of hay, all delivered by Army personnel, I was certain the solution to this mystery was close at hand.

Alone with my “unserviceable Army truck”, or “FUBAR” as the quaint military colloquialism goes, I climbed into the back of the truck where the bales of hay had once been and found a sandy residue. I smelled it. I tasted it. I discerned that the hay was laced with salt. But why?

Suddenly, the earth shook as a herd of caribou swarmed into the valley and began eating the hay we had just dropped. I was surrounded. Trapped. And nightfall was approaching fast.

But this was not the worst of it. The smell of caribou, er, exhaust, was almost overpowering. But, odd, it had the distinct odour of salt ... from the hay, of course! But what could this mean?

Then I saw muzzle flashes from the surrounding mountaintops -- from the artillery guns, yes! -- and the trajectory of the missiles were directly over our heads. The sudden explosions and the sheer violence of the barrage caused the herd of caribou to flatulate as if one.

Are you familiar with the scientific phenomenon of “temperature inversion”? The hot air was trapped in our valley.

Oh my! This is terrible ... oh, the humanity!

I threw open the hood of the Army truck and removed reams of duct tape and baling wire from the engine and

fashioned a protective suit for myself. But it was almost too much for me. I buried my face into a gopher hole, gasping for an air pocket and, just before I blacked out, I saw shimmering lights being pulled into the valley from the heavens.

I dreamily connected all the pertinent dots: The excess negatively charged electrons were being pulled from the high-energy atomic particles that accumulate above the earth’s poles. They were attracted to the earth by the positively charged sodium that was carried on the wind of the salt-scented flatulence.

Egad! The Northern Lights are created by caribou farts!

Then the blessed relief of unconsciousness overtook me.

I write this final dispatch from a luxuriously appointed Greyhound bus as I head Outsiade and points East. The Army, so impressed with my sleuthing abilities and uncanny talent for disappearing into my surroundings, is sending me on a mission: I am to impersonate a patient in a secret hospital to ascertain any ill plans.

Pizza Like Mama Makes It with Darrell Hookey

Mitch Cormier’s busy, busy kitchen provides much of the entertainment at Bocelli’s Pizzeria, at its new location at 2nd Avenue and Alexander Street.

esidents of Granger and Porter Creek: Rejoice, for you no longer have to drive into Riverdale to pick up your pizza from Bocelli’s Pizzeria.

Mitch “Call Me Mama” Cormier has moved downtown to the corner of Fourth Avenue and Alexander Street. And, if you head north from downtown, you can just slide your vehicle off the roadway and into a parking spot in front of the new restaurant and then back into traffic again.

It was all part of the plan as Cormier’s three-year-old business did well in Riverdale, but she noticed that 90 percent of her customers came from the other parts of Whitehorse.

So she started a Take n’ Bake service for those who had a longer way to travel and still wanted a piping hot pizza. But this move to downtown has seen amazing results: Her business has tripled in just a couple of weeks.

Bocelli’s inspires this kind of loyalty because Cormier is so loyal to authentic Italian gourmet pizzas. The Italian sausage is homemade, the parmesan cheese is hand-grated, some of the ingredients are organic and it is all fresh.

And a thin crust ensures that the ingredients, expertly orchestrated for maximum effect, stands out and is actually tasted.

Having been a fan of her pizza for three years, I was glad to finally have a chance to review her restaurant because her new location has seating. You still have to go to the counter to place your order, but at least you have a floor show to enjoy while waiting for your pizza.

Cormier is your stereotypical Italian hostess: Loud and loving.

She knows most of her customers

by name and they always seem so happy to be swept into her circle of food which, to an Italian, is always a celebration.

My Lovely Dinner Companion and I chose the furthest table from the door so that we can watch the

entire show. The restaurant was easy to find as it is painted the greens and reds of the Italian flag.

Inside, though, it is a funky combination of corn yellows, mulberries and Granny Smith Apple Greens.

We started with Zorba Prawns that were sautéed with fresh garlic and came in a stunning presentation of feta, spinach, onions, dill and marinara sauce. And the Foccacia Bread was so soft I could have eaten just that all night.

Then came the Tomato and Baccacini that was another tour de force of taste. The fresh mozzarella was served in its most original state before all of the salt is added for a subtle, grown-up taste. And the Balsamic vinegar dressing begged to be dipped into with the Foccacia Bread.

The pizza, itself, was actually a sampling of different items on the menu for those who can’t decide.

Cormier calls it the Quattro Stagioni as the selection follows the seasons from when the fish are running to spring vegetables to the meats of winter.

As casual as the restaurant is, you can still order wine by the glass or even a bottle of champagne for $90.

Well, after all, this is a restaurant that is wrapped in an Italian flag.

RECIPE From the kitchen of Bocelli’s Pizzeria

MAMA’S PRAWNS 2 servings INGREDIENTS

1⁄4 cup butter 1⁄8 cup olive oil 1⁄4 cup chopped garlic 12 prawns, peeled with tails left on 2 cups chopped spinach 1 teaspoon dill weed 1 cup marinara sauce 2 basil leaves 1⁄4 cup chopped red onion 1⁄2 cup feta cheese

PREPARATION Melt butter Add olive oil.

Add garlic.

Add prawns.

Sauté prawns on both sides until almost cooked.

Add marinara sauce, spinach, chopped onion.

Stir.

Add dill weed.

Let simmer for 3 to 5 minutes.

Place on serving dish.

Crumble feta cheese over dish and serve.

appy summer everybody!

The kids are out of school, the RVs abound in plenitude and the whole territory reeks of sunscreen. Summer is a magic insomniac time of year in the Yukon filled with many pests — mosquitoes, black flies and summer visitors.

Yes, summer is the time people get it in their heads to come “check out the Yukon”. And people are more apt to attempt such a crazy journey if they have relatives in the Yukon — or friends, or a friend of a friend, or anybody they can claim any kind of limited relationship with if it means a free meal or two and a place to do some laundry.

Summer visitors can be broken into two categories: Announced and Surprise.

The surprise visitors are the ones who just call from the airport or some bar downtown after they’ve had a few drinks and are looking for some place to stay while they get their bearings.

These people are often: a) Distant obscure relatives who heard of you from your mother. “If you go to Whitehorse, be sure to call .....” and sure enough they show up with lots of pictures and stories of second-cousins and great-aunts you have never met. If they accidentally go to the wrong house it doesn’t matter. These people are kind of interesting for the first glass of wine ... and get more painful after that. b) Friends of friends. Sometimes they know your sister or grew up down the street from you and hung out with your little brother. For people who hardly know you at all, this type of visitor somehow consumes the most of your resources. They need rides all over town, eat your food, use all your laundry soap, take nine showers a day and when they finally leave there is some obscure note saying they borrowed your barbeque for their canoe trip and will return it in a month. They never do.

The visitors, who are announced and you know they are coming in advance, are not necessarily any easier to deal with.

When old friends show up from afar, the first week is a total party and you eat, drink and be merry. When they are still sleeping on your couch three weeks later, the party starts to get a little stale. This usually leads to the moment when you take offence to them eating all

ing in the Yukon but aren’t your friends anymore. You see them occasionally at parties and say something awkward and bitter that you later regret.

The most challenging visit often comes from your immediate family. Sure, you have a great time for the first few days, but there’s always one of those too-long and too-hot road trip days to some bor-

The Bigger They Are, The Harder They Fall S

ometimes it just pays to be small.

Here at Yukon Brewing, we certainly don’t kid ourselves. In the great big beer picture in Canada, we are but a speck.

At present, Molson Coors produces about 50 times as much beer in a day as we make in a year. Don’t get us wrong, we are a speck that is actually kind of proud just to be here. We think that the Yukon, of anywhere in Canada, is the kind of place that ought to have a brewery. And we are glad that we are it.

But what makes us smile these days is looking at the big guys. First quarter results were released recently at the newly formed Molson Coors ... and they weren’t pretty. How does a loss of $46.5 million dollars sound?

Oh, that would be U.S. dollars, by the way. Obviously, investors did not much like the sound of that, because the next sound was the noise made by a falling stock price. On the day that this news was released, share prices fell 18.5 percent. Oops, hope it wasn’t in your RRSP.

Of course, we have our own opinions about the future for Molson Coors, but what do the investment gurus think about this? David Hartley of First Associates puts it well when he refers to the share price drop, “They’ve got their hands full, and I think investors figured that out today.” He goes on to say, “The industry conditions that they’re up against right now are going to make it extremely difficult to keep solely concentrating on cost cutting.”

In other words, Molson Coors needs to find a way to save money

in order to make the marriage work, but it has to keep spending money on promotions and product innovations to hang on to, let alone grow, sales. A tricky balancing act, to say the least.

least that we know of) is Molson Kick. This is a beer laced with guarana, a South American plant whose seeds and berries are used to produce a substance chemically identical to caffeine.

The whole idea is to go after the young drinker who (according to Molson research) is now drinking a can of energy drink (like Red Bull) with a beer chaser. In the typical “me too” fashion of the big brewers, Labatt has introduced its equivalent (Shok) and Budweiser has it as well (called Be, however that is pronounced).

But watch out, both alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, so you will dehydrate faster. Dehydration is a major factor in hangovers ... draw your own conclusions about that.

Why new products like these?

Well, Molson market share in Canada has fallen from 45.1 percent in 2000 to nearly exactly 40 percent today. Each point of market share is worth about $28 million in revenue, so losing over 5 points of market share in 5 years is, suffice it to say, a big problem. So, everyone is trolling for the next big thing. When you consider the marketing money spent without any guarantees, you can sense the risk.

Nobody Sleeps in ‘The Room’

played the original Silent Hill when it first came out and loved it. The game was dark, the storyline involved, and the drive to see what was around the next corner intense.

Silent Hill 4 — The Room is just as gripping as the original. Add to it the fact the sound and graphics have improved significantly and it is a winner of a game.

As with previous Silent Hill titles, the story begins with a strange and somewhat frightening premise. In this new story, Henry Townshend, the hero, is a prisoner in his own apartment. He cannot escape through the windows, cannot break the chains on his door,

with Justin Lemphers his phone is dead and he cannot get the attention of his neighbours. To make matters worse, he is plagued by a horrific recurring dream every time he falls asleep.

On the fifth day, things take a bizarre twist when a hole appears in his bathroom wall. Not having any other option available, Henry enters the hole and discovers not Wonderland but a twisted version of reality.

For anyone who has not played a Silent Hill title before, the games are based on a horror/ occult theme. The player is tasked with uncovering a very dark mystery and ultimately righting some heinous wrongs.

Some of the scenes in The Room are very disturbing due to violent content. Some of them also scare the pants off of the player.

Anyone who has played the original Silent Hill knows what I mean when I mention the “locker scene” and how much it made me jump. Believe me, The Room has a few of these pulse-racing moments, but I won’t spoil them for you here.

When I began a new game for The Room, I chose the Normal difficulty. My thought was an experienced gamer should be able to master the basics with ease and play competently on the middle difficulty level. This proved to be the case but I did have to learn to

properly control Henry with each weapon as it became available.

Timing the weapon swing and learning the manner in which foes attack is essential, especially in the latter portion of the game.

The only issue that made game play irritating at times was the difficulty in panning the camera around. As a result there were times in hallways with right angles, or small rooms, where it was hard to see the whole area with ease.

Camera panning was only a minor inconvenience as Henry always turned to face an enemy when one was near.

One of the things I enjoyed most about The Room is the basic premise behind the story: Take something that is safe and familiar (an apartment in this case) and turn it into a haunted and alien environment. The scenes I found most frightening were ones where Henry’s apartment had been altered in some unspeakable way.

So if the midnight sun is keeping you up all hours anyway, pick up this game and give it a try.

More Venues Would Be a Comic Relief Knock-knock.

ichael Couchman, a real bona fide funny man. The Great Guffaw. The Chortle Chief and ... well, you get the idea. Couchman is the kind of guy who doesn’t need to rely on knock-knock jokes to get a few laughs.

At the age of 17, Couchman is already burning up the stage with his brand of observational and pleasantly navel-gazing humour.

With comic idols like Jerry Seinfeld (for his subtle and often cerebral jokes) and Jon Stewart (for his pristine comic pauses) Couchman finds his own way by poking fun at himself rather than others.

He feels the audience can connect more with him and his quirks rather than if he shocked them with talk of self-pleasuring techniques. Political intrigue risks going over the heads of the audience and insulting any minority out of earshot won’t win him friends.

Besides, Couchman will be the first to admit he’s no good at insulting other people.

What really burns Couchman up? The lack of available venues for someone of his age in the Yukon. Having toured clubs and bars in Toronto, returning here was a small blow.

To evolve and improve on his sets, he really needs an audience to perform for. Without the opportunity to do so, Couchman spends his time pacing back and forth

with Sam Cashin in his basement running the sets over and over and listening to his old tapes, trying to imagine how the audience would react. It’s not so much that he needs a uniquely youth open mic, but rather for local establishments to embrace aspiring youth who promise to go far.

But it’s not all as bad as that.

From July 8 to 10, Couchman will perform at the Atlin Arts & Music Festival. The third installment of this particular event looks to be the biggest yet, and he will be basking in 20 minutes of stage time.

“I plan to stick with my older sets. I know I can fill 20 minutes with the tried and true material.”

Expressing obvious excitement for the future, Couchman reflects on his latest comedic

performance: his high school Grad. Other than his previous radio gigs, the graduation dinner and dance was the largest audience Couchman has performed for at approximately 800 people, most of whom were his academic peers and their extended families.

For Grad, Couchman wrote new material focused mainly around school, all the jokes had never been heard by an audience. The response was positive.

“Hey, they took five years of my life, they can take five minutes of my comedy.”

Already accepted to Queen’s University in Ontario, where he will study performing arts and stand-up comedy, Couchman hopes to expand his knowledge and thusly his stage material.

After tickling the funny bones of Yukoners, Michael Couchman will study the art of laughter at Queen’s University starting in the fall.

Tourism Grows Exponentially to the Power of One

W

e’ve all done it. Its part of being a Yukoner. You check in at Whitehorse Airport to fly “down-south”. You get your boarding card, clear security and immediately look around the departure lounge to see who you know that is also getting on the plane. Northbound from Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton; it’s the same thing.

I’ve always looked forward to those departure lounge reunions; the excitement and the stories

when traveling to or from the Yukon. You can always count on a friendly greeting, or meeting an old friend you haven’t seen in a while. I love hearing local folks who know each other sharing the story of the exotic locale that provided the golden tan or discussing the minus (insert curse word) 40 weather they missed while playing golf in Barbados.

In winter, more often than not, you know about half the folks waiting to board. The other half seems

strangely familiar and you know you’ve crossed paths with them dozens of times over the years. In summer though, as any seasoned Yukoner will tell you, you’ll likely recognize a few less friendly faces.

The rest, using good Yukon logic, must be tourists.

So today, I made the usual mad dash to the airport and arrived as the final boarding call was being announced. After being thoroughly screened, my computer swabbed and having both carryon bags inspected (the full flask almost didn’t make it ... hey what can I say, it’s a golfing trip with the guys!), I was one of the last folks to board. I arrived, sadly, having missed reunion time.

I boarded the plane and headed to seat 16C. I arrived at my row and discovered King Kong sitting

in my seat. Seriously, the guy was huge; we’re talking Eighth Wonder of the World here. As I explained his error looking almost eye to eye with him, despite the fact that he was sitting and I was standing, I quickly deduced that he was not from around these parts.

As the Incredible Hulk and I got settled, I commented on how lucky he was to be sitting in the exit row, and on the Air Bus, rather than the smaller CRJ aircraft. My giant companion offered a friendly smile and agreed, saying he was on his way to St. Louis and that he was hopeful his luck would last a little longer. He then asked if I was from Whitehorse and we got to chatting.

back. On his way back south, engine trouble east of Beaver Creek forced him to hitch-hike into Destruction Bay where he called for a truck from Whitehorse to come out and get him.

The truck arrived and was driven

by Kevin McDonald who is better known around here as Classy, the guy whose face we’ve all come to know and love on the label of our favourite ale, Yukon Gold.

It was a Monday, and for some reason the Harley-Davidson repair shop was closed. So Classy throws my new friend, Goliath, a set of keys and says, “Don’t spend all your money on a hotel, you can stay in my cabin out at the lake.”

My new friend was so blown away by this kind gesture from a total stranger that he vowed to return one day to visit and bring some of his biker friends back, too. So, five years later, that’s exactly what he did and he was once again taken out to the same cabin on the lake by his old friend Classy for a week of fishing and relaxing under the midnight sun.

My mammoth companion confirmed he’ll be back next year for RideYukon ’06, proof that one person can truly make a difference in tourism.

The Yukon needs more Classys and we need more folks like my seat-buddy who gets on planes to come and see them.

We Can Learn From the Aloe Vera Avant

t takes great inner strength to be compassionate.

There’s no question that plants, that possess nature’s inherent medicinal strengths, are well-rooted compassion plants.

Take for instance the Aloe Barbadensis or aloe vera plant. A leader among medicinal plants, this popular healer has been sharing its natural wisdom for hundreds of years.

Native to tropical Africa and Madagascar, the aloe vera is easy to grow in bright well-lit areas.

Blooming in early summer with spikes of tubular orangish-red flowers, aloes contain copious amounts of moisture within their thick waxy leaves. Preferring a dry climate, the aloe vera requires little watering and maintenance.

While it looks like a cactus, and grows in dry surroundings, the

Care and Maintenance of Your Compost Pile How do I make good compost?

All compost is not good compost.

And the manner in which you build and maintain your compost pile has a big impact on how efficiently it will decompose and how well it will nourish your plants.

Good compost-making is a science, based on establishing and feeding the micro organisms that are necessary for decomposing organic waste and providing the correct balance of organic waste that will result in a nutrient-rich final product. The

most volatile of the major nutrients required by plants is nitrogen, and a poorly built or maintained pile can result in compost that is virtually depleted of nitrogen and may even contain nitrogen in a form that is toxic to plants.

Start by gathering the materials you will need. You are aiming for a balance of organic materials containing high quantities of nitrogen with those containing more carbonaceous materials. In general, green, lush plant material (new growth, like fresh grass clippings) contains high quantities

of nitrogen while brown, coarse plant material (old growth, like straw or wood shavings) contains mostly carbon.

Other nitrogen-rich materials include fresh animal manures or bedding soaked in urine, alfalfa or blood meal.

It’s easy to put too many carbonaceous materials in your pile and since lots of nitrogen is required by the decomposing micro organisms to do their job, this will result in compost that takes forever to break down with little or no nitrogen in the end product.

The wider the variety of materials you use, the better, since different materials contain varying

amounts of all the major and minor nutrients required by plants.

It’s usually recommended not to use meat or fish waste as this can attract animals that will dig in your pile.

Now you can build your pile by layering higher nitrogen and higher carbon materials by no more than four to six inches per layer.

It’s a good idea to sprinkle in some good quality, organic garden soil between layers to inoculate your pile with micro organisms. Your compost will also require air and moisture to properly break down, so don’t build your pile too large (four or five feet high and wide is maximum).

Once it’s built, keep your pile moist (but not soggy) by watering it occasionally and/or covering the top of it with poly to help retain moisture. Finally, it is important to turn the pile to mix the ingredients at least a couple of times through the growing season. If it is properly built and maintained, your pile will heat up (especially in the middle) as a result of the decomposition and this will kill most weed seeds and disease organisms that may be present.

It may seem like a lot of work, but if you follow these instructions your compost pile will provide the best possible quality soil amendment for your garden and container soils. You can also know that you’ve done something to help the environment by taking waste and turning it into a valuable commodity.

I look at the clock, it is seven in the morning. Normally I don’t get up this early since 7:00 is a very early time to get up for a teenager. But, seeing as Mom drove off on a mushroom-hunting trip this morning and will not be here to milk as she usually does, I will have to do it for her.

I roll out of bed and head downstairs to get all of the milking equipment ready. The first thing I do is put one inch of water into the milking pot and place it on the stove to boil. After that is done, I insert two 1.5-litre jars upside down in the pot. This just makes sure there are no germs in them.

After I remove the steaming jars from the pot, I drain the water into an empty yogurt container along with a cloth that I use to clean the goats’ udders.

When I’m finished in the kitchen, I head out with the milking pot to the little building that contains all of the feed. I collect a bucket of dairy feed and one yogurt container full of dog food and head out to the goat pasture with my faithful puppy, Chance, frolicking by my side.

I arrive at the goat pasture and the first thing I do is go over to the spot at the fence where Orso’s food dish is located. After telling our mean livestock guardian dog to sit, I pull a dog cookie from my pocket and toss it several metres away.

While Orso was busily devouring his cookie, I quickly stick my hand through the fence and pour the dog food into his dish.

I walk back to where the milk goats are kept. After I get the milking stand ready, I let out the first of the two dairy goats to be milked. Bella hops onto the milking stand and starts to eat out of the bowl I had filled with dairy

ration. I take the cloth that I had left to soak in the hot water and clean her udder to keep dust from getting into the bucket.

Liesel will get her turn shortly.

Some people think milking is easy. Well, it is sort of like driving a car (nice comparison, huh?), some people have a natural feel for it but some, like myself, must develop the ability through practice.

Oh, not that this has anything to do with the subject of feeding animals in the morning, but I did

a test once and I discovered that you could shoot the milk from the goat udder up to two and a half meters.

After both of the goats had been milked and returned to the field with the others, I return to the feed house to get some grain for the chickens and two scoops of oats for the intact male goats we keep in a separate pen.

After all that was finished and my dog Chance was fed, I take the pail of goat milk into the house, pour it through a strainer into

Atlin Festival Gets Easier and Harder

ATLIN his is the third year for the Atlin Arts and Music Festival and things are getting easier for organizers ... and harder.

Stephen Badhwar, the producer of the festival that runs July 8 to 10, says the committee is beyond learning their jobs, but the size of the crowd keeps getting bigger and bigger.

In its first year, it was just a one-day festival at the Globe Theatre with a little stage outside.

Now it is a three-day festival that has become a showcase for artists and has an attached Wholistic Health Fair.

But it won’t grow beyond 2,000 because Badhwar says that is the maximum the town can handle “and keep it a quality experience”.

If it sells out, there will be notices placed on the radio and a sign will be erected at Jake’s Corner.

A sell-out means 1,700 tickets will have been sold and last year’s unexpected bill of $1,600 will be paid off and this year the staff will earn more than the $1.50 an hour they have been working for, says Badhwar.

have a mind of its own like a runaway horse. Melvin observes that expecting to be able to control it right off the bat is like trying “to ride a skateboard [for the first time] and expecting to ollie five feet in the air.”

Drawing people’s portraits this way has been a “natural evolution” for Melvin. It began as a demonstration for visitors to her Atlin studio, to show what she meant by “drawing” with this machine. Then, at the 2003 Yukon Riverside Arts Festival in Dawson City, Melvin went public. “I had a riot,” she said. “So many different faces and characters!”

Since then she’s brought the project back to Dawson City, as well as twice to the Midnight Sun and to the Wildwood Festival in Mount Lorne.

She does her portraits on 8x8 inch squares of canvas in a rayon thread that’s a blend of gold and green. That colour “seems to emerge from the canvas.”

She finds using more contrasting colours make it “all about

the colour, rather than about the line.” She hones her strong, committed line at Monday evening life drawing sessions in the winter at Wood Street Centre, coordinated

by John Quinsey.

Melvin loves this project because it gets “art out in the street, taking art right out there to the people.

“As artists we need to believe that art does function to serve society. This may be a momentary service — the experience of sitting

for a portrait, of watching it being done — but it’s working.

“What an experience, to be really seen, to have someone seeing you without judgment. And what a pleasure for me – it’s beautiful to see all these characters, these faces.”

Of course, she observes, all art is a struggle. She finds herself distracted by a desire to please the sitter, to create something that looks just like them (which may not be the same thing) and then

Longest Days Welcomes Art Downtown

wo hours after his interview for the position of co-ordinator of the Longest Days Street Fair, Donald Watt was offered the job.

Then, that night, he attended his first meeting.

Even so, Watt says he started six weeks too late.

The world champion snow carver had just finished for the season and had completed a couple of contracts before he learned of the job.

“Luckily there was a board in place – the Artspace North Society – and they knew what had to be in place.

“There were lists and I could just start reading,” says Watt, from his windowless office above Mac’s Fireweed Books. The walls are painted the orange of magno-

lias to compensate for the lack of sunlight.

“It wasn’t quite cold turkey, but it was still quite a shock.”

The job involves bringing artists and downtown merchants together to fill the hats of street buskers, bring visitors into the stores to buy from the merchants or the artist performing or showing works inside.

The job also involves bringing together three levels of government for funding and co-opera-

tion. Watt says not only are they all on board, but they will be looking at increasing his budget for next year if it proves to be a success.

Already, funding will put $50,000 into the pockets of artists and performers this year.

Artists and performers will be spread out among 16 venues and each will have a sign with a map showing the other 15.

One of the earlier decisions was to call the event a fair instead of a festival. Watt says a festival is considered a short-term and intense experience. But a fair denotes the economics of buying and selling and showcasing.

“Our mandate is to promote the heritage and culture and arts in conjunction with re-vitalizing business in the downtown area.”

there’s the worry that as she gets tighter and more controlled with her line and the representational side gets stronger that she’ll lose the sense of the person’s character. But to let go and work anyway, to be “out there confronting these things,” is the nature of the work. Melvin’s theatre background comes out as she muses, “It’s like being on stage performing for people.”

Shows of the resulting portraits have been installed at the Midnight Sun. People had a great time finding themselves and people they knew. This past spring, 103 portraits were installed in a grid at the Centre for Contemporary Textile in Montreal.

Melvin dreams of drawing every person in the Yukon, and installing it somewhere or touring it.

She suggested to our MP, Larry Bagnell, that he find an installation for it in the House of Commons. “Then we’d have full representation.”

That objective is to establish a children’s museum in Whitehorse where kids can learn about the Yukon in a fun, hands-on environment.

In addition to a trading post, mineshaft crawlspace and wildlife carousel, the society plans on including a story telling room in the museum. With diverse cultural photos and stories adorning the walls, tales would be recounted in the room with the help of puppet performances similar to those taking place at the Street Fair.

So far, public reaction has been enthusiastic filling Homan with excitement: “I was in Boston when the first children’s museum opened there and I just loved it! I played there all day with my son,” she admitted, adding, “I think Whitehorse is the perfect place to open a children’s museum. It’s very family oriented.”

She is also keen on providing a safe, supervised location where families traveling from in and around the territory can take their children for an interactive, informative and entertaining experience.

Recently, the Children’s Museum of the North Society has been asking for public input and working on developing partnerships with local non-profit organizations. A publication will be prepared with an indepth description of the society’s initiative as well as examples from other children’s museums throughout Canada and the U.S. The society will also be working with service organizations and government agencies in an attempt to secure funding for the project.

Thinking Outside the Black Box

I

came across an amazing box on the dike in Dawson last week. The Camera Obscura (dark box, in Latin) is a permanent fixture of the Dawson landscape.

Originally built by volunteers including Scott Price, John Steins and Byrun Shandler, under Mario Villeneuve’s guidance, the exterior was refinished beautifully over the winter by a Yukon College apprentice carpentry course, with some materials donated by Arctic

Inland. Mike Yuhaz, artist and curator of the Odd Gallery in Dawson City, ties the project into the history of the camera and various contemporary conceptual issues it illuminates.

It provides educational opportunities not just for the public but for public school, Youth Art Enrichment and Arts for Employment students. I opened the red door, bedecked with a

I listened to the bright and busy Dawson afternoon from inside this dark space, light coming from one round, metal rimmed, quarter-inch hole. It took longer than I thought it would for my eyes to adjust.

Finally, upside down, the line of the Dome and buildings took form along the wall, in colour, no less.

The Camera Obscura is open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and some other times as well ..... July 1-3, Dawson City will be the Yukon Capital of black boxes.

The Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture is hosting a 48Hour Pinhole Photography Event, facilitated by Janice Cliff and Kyla MacArthur. Registrants will have a workshop July 1, and spend July 2 and 3 shooting and developing pinhole camera photographs. A camera is just a lightfast black box with light sensitive material in it; anything can be made into a camera; and anything is. Last year, Lulu Keating and cohort Leslie Piercy turned a van into a pinhole camera. Their photo is on display in the hallway at KIAC. Filmmaker Andy Crowther made a camera out of a rubber boot and photographer Mario Villeneuve made one out of a Premium Plus cracker box that the ravens wouldn’t leave alone ..... Canada Will Never Lose Its Backbone with Johnny Caribou

DAWSON CITY hh. The summer. The bright sun high in the sky. The long, long light of day powering into the evening realm.

The sound of cats and loaders bludgeoning the land, harvesting that little yellow metal which was Dawson’s foundation. The dust kicking up a festival every time a vehicle skirts along one of Dawson’s roads. The hoard of tourists motoring around town, eating ice cream, digesting history, filling themselves with culture and playing out in the wilds of the Yukon.

It’s hard to believe that after what the town has been through over the last year and a half, things are still operating ... it’s business as usual.

But that’s always been the way of Dawson. Political parties, elastic personalities, environmental disasters come and go but the town has always pushed on, always found a way to survive.

recently turned 40, could be called the Yukon’s champion of the “antiquarian avant-garde.” Check out his Van Dyke photograms on acid-free paper at the Yukon Art Society Gallery on Wood St. (YAS will be there till September when they’ll move completely to Arts Underground on Main Street.) A photogram is a one-of-a-kind photographic image in which a photo-sensitive solution on paper is exposed in the sun, catching the shadow of an image laid on top of it. Villeneuve’s photograms of Icelandic poppies (yes, that’s what they are) refer to Victorian uses of this technique in botanical identification. The rich brown colour comes from the iron and silver in the photographic emulsion .....

During the early 1900s when land concessions were granted to large mining operations, the gumboot miner was virtually killed off but the town survived. When WWII hit hard at the labour supply in Dawson, the town still managed to struggle along.

When the last of the dredging companies shut down in 1966, the town dwindled to around 600 odd souls, but they hung on and worked to make the town live.

The flood of 1979, which forever changed old Dawson - with the many relics from the gold rush era destroyed by the flood - to the new sleeker Dawson of less buildings, town members began to rebuild. The fires of 2004 halted the tourist trade to a trickle, but it was still enough for the town to drink from.

No matter what happens, one thing has been constant: Dawson is still here, still living its history both out in the goldfields and in town. It’s still meeting the challenges it faces and conquering them.

But that’s the nature of small towns in Canada. They might not have the diversity of bigger cities to help overcome obstacles quicker, but small towns have the patience, the resilience, the belief of its people to stay the course.

Dawson is small town, which is the very backbone of this great nation.

LINK Dances in the Street with Jude Wong

I

f you saw The Complete Works of William Shakespeare last season at the Guild, you may remember the line, “Oh, I love performance art. It’s so ... (searching for the word) ... pretentious!”

Some of you may also remember the last Brave New Works (we miss you Trace Dejaray), in which dancer Cara Siu was birthed from a piece of tin foil as Marvin, an alien creature wearing a racing helmet, short shorts, striped tights and big boots.

Ah, yes, it’s a fine line between Evil Pretentious Performance Art (EPPA) and good, clean, stirring, toe-tickling physical theatre.

For the record, I laughed my head off at Marvin, as did the rest of the crowd that night.

If you were there, you may also remember dancer Monique Romeiko in her charismatic and haunting improvisation with Siu. Unfortunately, some people’s opinions of dance may have been tainted and even traumatized by terrifying examples of the abovementioned EPPA. Some people simply may not want to go to the theatre anymore for dance.

So, LINK Dance Foundation is moving (literally) out of the theatre this summer, presenting its second season of Dancing in the Streets, a joint project with the Longest Days Street Fair next month.

This is an exciting opportunity for everyone to be exposed to dance and physical theatre.

What’s exciting is that no one is forced to sit in a dark theatre pretending they like something when maybe they don’t.

In the streets, the audience may leave at any point. To the performer, feedback just doesn’t get any more honest than this.

Both Siu and Romeiko will be arriving in Whitehorse from Vancouver and Montreal (respectively) as guest artists in Dancing in the Streets. They are also cocreators in the project along with Gail Lotenburg, director of LINK Dance Foundation.

“It’s an opportunity for the public to encounter dance on a regular basis,” says Lotenburg, “and to

gain familiarity with dance, as an art form, and as a contributor to Whitehorse being a fun place to be in the summer.”

Leigha Wald and Ilona Dougherty will be returning to Whitehorse as recent graduates of the dance programs at Simon Fraser University (Vancouver) and Concordia (Montreal), respectively.

Other featured performers in Dancing in the Streets include Prima Ladchumanopaskeran (classical Indian dance), Claire Strauss, James McCullough, Sam B-Good, Tribal Style Belly Dance and dance artist Heather Jones, who has recently moved to Whitehorse from Vancouver.

Yours truly would like to think she’s on some kind of a break from performing this summer, but she may have been enticed to make an appearance or two ... or not. I say no more.

Throughout the month of July, performances will take place Tuesdays to Saturdays in several downtown venues, as well as Saturday nights at the Takhini Hotsprings.

Weekly contact dance workshops will be held at Rotary Peace Park on Friday evenings and two adult creation workshops (one week each) will be held the weeks

of July 11 and 18. No experience is necessary.

Of Wood and Passion

BY NICOLE BAUBERGER hen wood artist David J. Conley was a youth of 19 in Manhattan, he saw a show of Pablo Picasso’s early cubist work at the Museum of Modern Art. Recently set on fire about wood by Danish craftsmen, he said, “Someday, I will carve those images.”

The Pablo Series in the Yukon Arts Centre Grotto presents these intimate works, six drawn from Picasso, with eight other original pieces inspired by his style and that of Escher and Braque.

At first he thought he would carve them in three dimensions; cubist work evokes a sense of sculpture. However, studying them over the years he came to see this wasn’t possible; draughtsman’s tricks in the drawing and painting created volumes that wouldn’t translate into three actual dimensions; only into their illusion.

In his artist statement he describes his technique as twodimensional carving or threedimensional drawing — each line has two sides and a bottom and Conley alters the angle of those

edges to create subtle changes in the quality of line.

Conley approaches his rendering of Picasso’s Mandolin Player and points to one line, one small area that sends the picture 90 degrees into another perspective.

“It delineates a door,” he explains. “And it allows music to come through.”

He then walks over to his own creation, Wind Keeper, and he shows the same door that he has picked up from the Picasso: “It, too, changes perspective.”

It’s these small details that delight Conley about Picasso: “He draws emotion on top of reality and you just can’t leave it alone.

“You keep looking at it and looking at it and looking at it.”

Picasso is the artist who fought back the intrusion of the camera.

At the turn of last century, “the box” put a lot of artists out of work as weddings were recorded in this new way. It was Picasso who found a way to offer more than what the camera could see.

Applying this genius to wood — Conley’s precious wood that he collected since he was a boy of 4 — follows a career of working with wood as a carpenter and cabinet maker.

Pablo Picasso painted his self-portrait, so, in the style of the cubist master, David J. Conley did, too. His works can be seen at the Yukon Arts Centre Grotto until July 10.

The style relates to the designs of houses and furniture he’s drawn up over the years. The drawings are made with acute sensitivity to the marks already in their standing dead birch or diamond willow plank surfaces: “When you find an exquisite piece of wood, you don’t let a knot hole stop you.”

forest around his home near Pelly Crossing 11 months of the year. He is looking for the right tree for his various artistic endeavours, sometimes chasing young grizzlies off with sticks.

Then, in March when the ground conditions are just right, he takes his chainsaw out and rediscovers the “wood found in the tree”.

Etching the art into the wood can take months. Even though the larger pieces cost $1,000 to $2,000, “I’m poorer now than when I was 12.”

Each piece is framed or presented in original, almost sculptural, matte black, often using velvet as well as wood. The simplest stands out from the wall with turned wooden knobs, strung with a guitar E string.

In the middle of the space, diamond willow furniture by fellow Yukon Artists @ Work member Frank Fry surrounds Conley’s three-dimensional pieces.

The small, slender treelike shape is interesting from every angle. At the end of each branch, Conley has attached diamond willow bobbins, acorns or perhaps buds.

To me the piece speaks of the new life a tree comes to in the hands of this artist.

Conley chose this installation to guide people in close to his drawings, best viewed from an intimate distance. He observes that kids move in to examine them closely most quickly. Adults look at them side to side “like old ravens” and gradually make their way closer, often surreptitiously reaching up to touch the engraving, the drawing hovering between two and three dimensions in the best cubist tradition.

Painting With Janet Moore is usually the one she is working on now.

And the learning process often goes both ways as she is given the chance to see art through the eyes of the viewer.

Just being challenged to explain the process of art is beneficial to Moore: “Art is an intuitive thing and when I teach I find the words to describe it.”

The class, on July 4 at 6 p.m. at the Yukon Arts Centre, will likely begin with a tour of the permanent collection on display in the main gallery.

rt is being appreciated in the Yukon a little more every year ... and Janet Moore is doing her part.

The visual artist of mixed media and paint — “Sometimes I use straight acrylic and sometimes I throw things into the mix” — is going to talk to the public and paint with them.

Artist Talk and Try is a Yukon Arts Centre program that will give her a room, paints, paint brushes and even smocks so that she can show her techniques to participants.

At $5 for the night, it is available to most everyone.

And making art available is what this program is all about.

Moore says she wants to help people become more comfortable with art: “Artists always struggle to find the words to describe their work ... viewers, too.

“I want to encourage questions,” she says. “I want them to relax about art.”

Sure, there is the theory that the more people know about art, the more likely they are to buy artwork. But Moore says art isn’t always a commodity.

Indeed, “There is a self-indulgent component to art.”

The participants will then return to the classroom where they can try painting themselves ... or not. Some will emulate their teacher and others will head off in another direction.

“It’s loosely defined,” she says.

Moore has just finished a residency at Harrison Artist Retreat where she was preparing for a show at the Yukon Arts Centre in the first week of September.

New Equipment Puts Skateboarders in Second Heaven

BY McKENZIE GRANT s I write this article, the second annual International Go Skateboarding Day is washing away with today’s rain outside. I suspect this will not stop all skateboarding in the Whitehorse area, despite knowing that it is horrible for your bearings, sometimes you just have to skate.

And, besides, a little rain can make a power slide a lot more fun.

I do know that despite the rain, one of the more fun steps in the upgrading of the Second Heaven Skate Park will go ahead as planned.

The Second Heaven Skate Committee will be out with spray paint this afternoon, making outlines where they would like to see the new ramps placed.

That’s right, new equipment.

The Second Heaven Skate Committee has been waiting, no pining, for this equipment.

As of June 29, the skate board park will hold a new bank, quarter pipe and pyramid.

The process, from recognizing the need to deciding which pieces and to their placement in the park has been a great exercise in community. Planning meetings were held with Second Heaven Skate Committee and BYTE to discuss proposed designs. Skaters were then given copies of blue prints to make adjustments to.

All proposed changes were sent to Spectrum Skate Park Designs, who worked closely with the group, explaining any changes, so no input was left out.

The culmination of these planning sessions? Well, Part 1 is this mobile equipment and Part 2 is wait for an expansion.

The final blueprint for the 8,600 square foot concrete expansion to the existing park is at the BYTE office for public inspection.

Dawson Event Opts for More Excitement DAWSON CITY he Dawson City Women’s Shelter has decided to add some excitement to an annual money-raising event. It has added swimming and cycling to its walkathon.

The Tri-Challenge 2005 will see the first competitors dive into the pool at 8 a.m. on July 9. Times will be collected and then added to the running/walking and cycling events that take place in other venues.

Michele MacPhee, a relief worker at the shelter, says there are two categories for the triathlon: Gold Rush requires 20 laps of the pool, 10 kilometres of cycling and a fivekilometre run.

It’s a Friendly Marathon ATLIN t only makes sense that a friendly town like Atlin would have a friendly marathon.

The 26th Annual Atlin Mini Marathon, July 9, is “competitive, but not high-tech,” says organizer Edith Sidler.

“It’s easy going, people enjoy that,” she says.

The course follows the hilly and gravel Warm Bay Road and ends at the Warm Springs where competitors can go for a hot dip and then enjoy wieners from the barbecue and watermelon.

It had been held on Sundays, but the date was changed to Saturday this year so that people can party that night, says Sidler.

It is the weekend of the Atlin Arts and Music Festival after all.

marathon coincided with the festival and they had a spike in numbers. Over the years, the mini-marathon has had from 15 to 35 runners take part.

Some of those runners are as young as 4 as a 1.6-kilometre race has been added. There are also distances of six kilometres, 12 kilometres and 25.8 kilometres.

Each distance ends at the Warm Springs so that each runner can be cheered on.

Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Tahrane Park. The cost is $5 each.

Sidler’s family business has contributed a night’s stay in one of its cabins and a canoe or kayak rental as prizes.

Frisbee Cult Rises in the North What’s UP in SPORTS & FITNESS with George Maratos

L

ooking at Jesse Devost you would never guess him to be a cult member, but for three years, while studying at the University of Victoria, Devost was just that.

It was during the mid-90s that Devost first became enthralled with the game of Ultimate, a sport he describes as beautiful.

“It’s kind of cult status,” said Devost, when describing the game’s popularity Outside. “It’s really big in a lot of university towns and leagues have just blossomed over the past 15 years or so.”

Ultimate involves a Frisbee and traditionally seven players per team. It is defined on the “what is ultimate dot com” website as an elegantly simple yet fascinating and demanding game, mixing the best features of sports such as soccer, basketball, football and netball.

When Devost moved north to Whitehorse seven years ago, he was under the assumption the sport would be going through the same boom as it was in the south, where some cities have leagues comprised of 300 teams Some colleges in the United States even offer Ultimate scholarships.

In Whitehorse though, Ultimate did not even exist.

So Devost, along with friend Jean Paul Molgat, decided to launch his own league.

“That’s what’s kind of great about the Yukon,” said Devost.

“If you have an idea and it hasn’t been done up here you can probably make it happen.”

Devost admits his ambitions for the game have changed over the years.

“I wanted to take a top-notch Ultimate team from the Yukon to travel around to tournaments and that, that was one of my early dreams,” said Devost.

And while there have been trips to Anchorage and Fairbanks

for tournaments, Devost says these days his Ultimate priorities have changed.

“Over the years I’ve found that most of the attitude of the folks playing up here is that they’re more interested in having fun than taking the game super seriously and luckily I’ve migrated to that same point of view myself,” Devost explains.

He pauses, a smirk appears on his face: “And I’m not getting any younger either.”

Devost says the appeal of the sport, and it is a sport as he assures me several times, is easy to realize.

“It’s absolutely free and there’s no commitment,” said Devost, while reaching in to his bag to get out new Ultimate posters he has created. “All you need is enough cones to create an end zone and a Frisbee, which you can buy for like 15 bucks.

“You can play ultimate in your bare feet at the beach with some rocks in the sand or you can play on a field with cones and an official disc.

“You can kind of do it wherever you want.”

Devost, the leader of Ultimate in the north (so to speak), says the game played here these days is very welcoming, with no set teams or referees.

“People are more focused on having a good time,” said Devost.

Our main focus is making sure that people come out and enjoy themselves and we hope that people get hooked too.”

Celebrities Prove Golf Can Be Noble

BY GEORGE MARATOS f 18 holes of golf, prizes, dinner, live music and a putt off weren’t enough, golf enthusiasts will get the chance this year to brush shoulders with one of Canada’s most renowned broadcasters.

CBC National anchor and reporter Peter Mansbridge will be in the Yukon capital city to participate in the annual Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournament, a Yukon Learn fundraiser to be held at Mountain View Golf Course July 10.

Mansbridge will be joined by fellow CBC personality Shelagh Rogers.

Since its beginning 14 years ago in Watson Lake and Whitehorse, the PGI Yukon Golf Tournament for Literacy has become the largest fundraiser for literacy in the territory.

Last year, the Yukon PGI raised over $26,000 dollars and since the first PGI in 1986, the tournaments, held across Canada, have raised over $8 million nationally for literacy.

“We asked him,” joked John Spicer, co-chair of the PGI Committee in Whitehorse, when asked how he was able to recruit Mansbridge. “Peter is a national spokesperson for the PGI and has been committed to the cause for a number of years, so it wasn’t very difficult to convince him to come up and support the literacy tournament here.”

Mansbridge took over spokesperson duties in January 2003 after Peter Gzowski, passed away in 2002 from emphysema.

While in Whitehorse, Mansbridge will also be hosting a fundraising dinner at the Hi-Country Inn. Spicer says he’s unsure if Mansbridge has been to the Yukon before, but did say it will be the first time Mansbridge will be participating in the Whitehorse PGI. In addition to Mansbridge and Rogers, CBC Poet-Laureate Robbie Benoit will be doing some readings.

The Learners Achievement Award will also be presented following the golf.

Organizers say most of the money raised is through sponsorship and donations.

Golf carts are auctioned off prior to the opening tee-off and an unlimited number of mulligans,

dubbed “Gzowskis” can be purchased for $5 a piece.

The “Gzowskis” may come in handy on the special “hole in one” hole, yet to be selected.

An ace there and you could walk away with a new car, boat, motorbike or cash, although organizers wouldn’t say what the prize was for this year’s tourney.

“We’ve had people come close here, but we’ve never seen a hole in one,” said Spicer. “It has happened though. A person in Prince Edward Island won a new car.”

With prizes for long drive, straightest drive and closest to the pin, the tournament does get competitive, although Spicer stresses that’s not the PGI’s purpose.

“It’s about raising funds so that agencies like Yukon Learn can provide adequate learning throughout the territory and it’s really all about the cause,” explains Spicer.

“The golf is just the venue to get there.”

The Theory of Triangulation Hi there, Golf Buddies!

In all the years I’ve been teaching, nothing works faster or better than the theory of triangulation.

Sounds complicated? It’s not. Let me explain: For every shot in golf, as we set up, we create a triangular shape from our shoulders to our

hands. Creating and maintaining this triangle is the secret. As the triangle is created, the forward arm and wrist should be in a relatively straight line. This straight line relationship needs to be maintained during the backward and the forward motion of the club. The hands and wrists should remain very quiet and passive.

How do I make all this work?

In order to move your triangle efficiently, we have to move it from the shoulders. Any hand or wrist movement, or pushing of the club will cause our triangle to break down. Hello to scuffed and sculled shots.

So, remember, to become a Short Game Wizard, learn to create and maintain your triangle. Think of the pendulum in a grandfather clock. To control the distance, make the take away and followthrough shorter or longer and watch those strokes come off.
