Take an Artful Piece of the Yukon Home

n the winter of 1995 my family headed south to spend Christmas with our relatives in Denver, Colorado. Our accumulated crew amounted to eight cousins and four parents, and in accordance with an ancient family tradition one evening was set aside for a talent show; I was tapped to be the MC. Amidst the singing and dancing and semi-rehearsed goofiness, my uncle Tyler took to the stage and handed me a short note that I was to read as his introduction. It read (paraphrasing as well as my memory allows): “From a young age Tyler Johnson realized he had a talent to share with the world. As a teenager, orthodontists tried to take this away from him, but they couldn’t. Tonight he presents this talent to you.” We all watched, baffled. Tyler took a sip of water and began to slowly pirouette in the manner of a rotating sprinkler. Then, as he continued to twirl, he fired a little stream of water through the gap between his two front teeth: the human fountain. Laughter and dawning compre-

David Letterman, diastemic hero hension rippled through the audience. I was 14 years old at the time, and had typically crooked adolescent teeth. Indeed, orthodontists were eying me up in the same way they eyed-up young Tyler a generation previously. And within a year I was, in the parlance of the schoolyard, a brace-face. The braces did their job though, and I emerged from my metal-mouthed enclosure with relatively straight teeth. However, in the years to follow, my teeth slowly shifted, and half-a-decade after my braces were removed I once again had a gap between my front teeth. At that point subjecting myself to another round of corrective oral surgery was not in the cards, so I was left with two choices; I could either dislike my teeth and be embarrassed by them, or I could take an irreverent satisfaction in my own imperfection. Initially, I bent towards the former. But disliking something about oneself — particularly something

one has no control over — is exhausting and fruitless, so gradually I inched along the spectrum from shame to pride. It didn’t hurt that I had a role model: David Letterman. At the time, Letterman had the most famous tooth-gap in the world. But it didn’t stop him from becoming the best thing on Late Night, or from seeing Drew Barrymore’s breasts on network television. More recently, former New York Giant Michael Strahan has been leading the charge for people with diastema. Diastema: that’s the official term for the gap-toothed. Has a nice ring to it, eh? In fact, it’s about time we started a diastemic pride movement. Much like those with “perfect” teeth, we too can become television stars and professional athletes. But remember, unlike us, they can never become human fountains.

The Collector by Meagan Deuling

Trolley Ticker

H

is name is Douglas Roy Rogers Dupont the Third. That’s what he’s known as on the water around Tagish, at least; it’s his two-way radio handle. He says all he needs is to catch a fish bigger than 60 pounds, and then he can die. Dupont used to live in a cabin on California Beach, on Tagish Lake. Fishing brought him North. Now, he owns a lodge with his wife, Mitch Dupont. The Six-Mile River Resort sits on the bank of Six-Mile River, right before it turns into Marsh Lake. Doug Dupont takes guests charter fishing. He can’t sell what they catch in the restaurant, but he can show his guests how to cook it. He docks his pirate-flagged fishing boat on the wharf, right in front of the restaurant patio, and asks diners if they want some fish eggs. He shows them his coolerfull of fresh trout eggs. You can tell he owns the place. They’ve owned it for seven years and Doug Dupont says at first people thought nobody would come. But the lodge is getting very popular. Dupont says people, motorbikers, sometimes, or RVers, stumble upon the resort by accident. They stay. Or, they book a one-night stay and end up staying a week. “These guys here are on their sixth day,” he says. “They came for a day.” He’s referring to a South African couple. Later, the man comes up to Dupont to chat. He tells Dupont to wait, as soon as he retires from his game reserve job in South Africa, he’s going to come and help the Duponts maintain the lodge.

Doug and Mitch Dupont Before it was Six-Mile River Resort, the spot was known as Curry’s Corner. Dupont’s got the old Curry sign hanging on the back wall of the lodge. The lettering is faded but you can tell it was a fine piece of work when it was new. It’s not the first finely crafted old thing Dupont came across. He says he was sixteen when he got his hands on a 1929 New Brunswick radio. He gestures to where it is, inside the restaurant, and says, “It still works.” Around that time, he also got a 120-year-old rocking chair. “I guess it’s a 160 years now,” he says. Dupont’s attracted to good workmanship: “Things used to be made so much better.” Outboard motors line an outside fence, a nod, perhaps, to the

grip fishing has on Dupont’s life. Underneath the motors are metal gas containers. He’s got license plates from around North America arranged on the front wall of the lodge, and old canoes under the back porch — two Teslins, and one chestnut. “I’m just a collector, I’m not a hoarder.” He recently went to his brother’s wedding in Vancouver. As he is wont to do, he skulked out some garage sales in the area, and came home with an old pair of leather-topped speed skates. They’re hanging on a wall. He collects horns, and has an old wood sleigh loaded with a jumble of antlers. He rummages through them to find an old moose jaw. He gives it to me. He says it’s gotten to the point where people hang on to old things when they find them, to give to him. He trades them for a beer, or dinner at the lodge. He points to his collection of cast-iron tractor seats and says stuff like that used to be easy to come across for cheap. Now, because of shows like American Pickers, obscure workmanship is getting its due recognition. It’s making collecting a pricier hobby. It also makes finding old, forgot-

ten things more of a treasure hunt. Dupont goes to Salvation Army stores, and garage sales, whenever he can. He goes to swap meets in the States and always brings things home from his travels. There’s a massive whale vertebrae in the restaurant. Dupont says they came across the skeleton in Baja, Mexico. He took the third vertebrae, and drove it home in the RV. He started collecting cook stoves and realized they make good flower planters. Peonies burst through cookstove burners; the stovepipes are crooked. Dupont says that’s sort of a nod to Jim Robb’s style. Dupont’s carefully displayed collections are like life imitating art. “The amount of people who come here and see, it reminds them of their childhood,” He says. Dupont says he’ll collect just about everything. The only things he won’t collect are wives. “They’re too expensive.” Meagan Deuling is a Whitehorse-based writer and the assistant editor of What’s Up Yukon.

Discarded old boardwalks waiting to be hauled away, just up the street from the Alchemy Café. Some of the less damaged bits will be recycled as walkways for peoples’ homes.

a water strategy FOR YUKON We listened to Yukoners talk about water.

“We need clean water, healthy water and lots of it,” you said. “People need it, the economy needs it and the environment needs it,” you said. “And we’ll need it today, tomorrow and forever.” We developed the YUKON WATER STRATEGY AND ACTION PLAN based on Yukoners’ desires and hopes for this most essential of our resources. It’s a comprehensive plan for making decisions to maintain the quality, quantity and health of Yukon water for everyone. It’s a big-picture plan and we’ll be spending an additional $2.7 million over three years on projects to make it happen.

sk tourists what they like about Dawson City and you get a variety of responses. They like the old buildings and the sense of history they convey. They like that the town doesn’t seem to be frozen in history — that there is a day-to-day life here. They like the boardwalks. Our downtown core, from Front Street up to Fifth Avenue, is connected by board walkways that offer the option of staying above either the mud or the dirt that is a feature of all of Dawson’s streets except Front. They are a feature that turns up on a lot of the formal and informal surveys regarding what visitors like about the ambiance our town. Tourists like the look of our boardwalks. You’ll find our visitors backing out to the middle of the street so that they can get a good picture of the boardwalks with their cameras, smartphones or tablets. But our boardwalks are both charming and tricky, which is why a lot of people, both visitors and locals, chose to walk beside them rather than on them. You will see visitors walking two or three abreast on the street.

They boardwalks are mainly for pedestrians. Efforts have been made over the years to make them accessible to people with walkers and for those little scooters, but they haven’t worked well, and because most of the walks are 10 to 20 cm higher than the streets in the summer, they are a challenge for those with mobility issues.

When they’re brand new, like the ones in front of the Alchemy Café or the stretch by the Dawson Daily News Building, they can be quite nice and pleasant to walk on. But that level smoothness doesn’t last. The ground in Dawson is constantly shifting, and it’s not too long before newly installed stretches of boardwalk begin to tilt one way or the other, or both ways. Fresh dirt foundations settle and suddenly there’s a dip in the walkway, or a bit of a bounce. Then there’s the material, which bears the impact of rain, intense summer sun, and all the things it’s been subjected to in the winter to keep the snow and ice clear. The boards last a couple of years, but eventually they begin to chip and splinter. It doesn’t help that in the winter the street levels inch up with the accumulated snowpack until they are level with the boardwalk. Parallel parking chews the ends off the boards and angle parking breaks them off in places, hastening the need for rebuilding. All around town you can see where individual boards have been replaced as they gave out in areas where the ones around them are still functional. Eventually whole sections get to the point where they need to be pulled out and replaced. By that time, the boards are flexing underfoot; the walkway is canted in several different directions; and it’s actually less of an adventure to walk along beside them on the street. Still, our visitors do like the look of them. After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City. Food for Thought with Katherine Belisle

Summer Insomnia longer than the days left in the season. And therein lies one cause of summer insomnia — the belief that time is running out. Summer is a period of rapid growth and progress. As Nature explodes all around us, we are reminded of what is to be bountiful, beautiful and brief. This can be inspiring or depressing, depending on how we feel about “the fruits of labour” in our own life. We may find ourselves asking: Am I in the right place, doing the right thing, with the right people? Is my own “season” passing? Have I made the most of my opportunities? Am I growing and maturing into what I want? What comes next? During the daytime, distractions make it is easy to suppress such thoughts. But if daily life is not meeting our needs or reflecting our inner truths, our spirit goes on high alert. In the quiet of the night, it will let us know that something essential to our being is being unheard, unsupported, repressed, or taken. Insomnia is our body’s way of saying, “Wake up”: It is an opportunity to assess what is not working in our life, and why. It is a call to change. Being called to change in the summer is probably the safest time. But what are we to do when we are too tired to think clearly or take action? To help us relax and sleep, we need minerals like magnesium and potassium. Eating green leafy veggies, seeds, nuts, and bananas are a good start. Alcohol, drugs, some medications and an acidic diet will leach minerals from the body, so

ost of us attribute summer fatigue to long days, late nights and too much to do. For some people, though, summer insomnia is more complicated and serious than that. Without proper rest, we cannot be sufficiently restored and recuperated. Our bodies become vulnerable, our minds go dull, and our spirits wither. It is no way to enjoy life, or summer. Yukoners get really excited about summer; winters are so long,

irch syrup, fireweed jelly, juniper berry shortbread, and low bush cranberries are a few of the ingredients that will rise to the occasion for the Yukon Culinary Festival. Among the festival events is the Tastes of Whitehorse food crawl, beginning July 31 at 5:30 p.m. It will encompass the tasty delights of five local restaurants including Antoinette’s, Balzam Café, The Chocolate Claim, The Edge, and The Wheelhouse. Amy O’Rourke, community relations officer of the Tourism Industry Association of Yukon (TIA), couldn’t be more thrilled about the food crawl. “This is the first time we are doing an event like this,” she says. “We hope to make it an annual

event as it is a great way to showcase local restaurants and guest chefs.” Each restaurant will host a 45-minute dinner sampler, which will feature an appearance from a guest chef, to explain the dish. Each meal will be accompanied with a beer pairing, courtesy of a flavorsome selection from the Yukon Brewery. Crawlers then have 15 minutes to arrive at their next destination. At the end of dinner, a specialty dessert will be catered from the Balzam Café, at the Yukon Brewery. If you have any special dietary needs or restrictions, no problem, TIA has you covered. “When people purchase a ticket, they can leave their contact info, as well as any special diet requests,” says O’Rourke. Tickets are $90 and can be purchased at participating restaurants. Dawson City will also be hosting their food crawl on August 1, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., making it possible for food fans to take pleasure in both events. There are plenty of other festival events. You can treat your taste buds to one or more of the fol-

lowing: First Nations Salmon BBQ (Carcross), Bannock vs. Sourdough demonstration (Dawson City), Wild Game Frenzy (Faro), and Feast of Farms (Riverdale Farms). Beware of drool-comas to follow. A food festival would not be complete without guest appearances from celebrity chefs. Author and gastronomy specialist, Miche Genest will be along for Tastes of Whitehorse, and is stoked about the festival. The Toronto native has been in the Yukon since 1994, and has fallen in love with the local ingredients. “There are some really great things you can get here, like juniper berries, buckwheat flour, sesame seeds and a wide variety of game,” she says. Genest is the author of two cookbooks, The Boreal Gourmet: Adventures in Northern Cooking, and The Boreal Feast: A Culinary Journey Through the North. Some examples of her favourite Yukon recipes are, slow cooked braised wild meat with real birch syrup and wild berries, hot smoked salmon, and hazelnut meringue. Over the years, the culinary scene in Whitehorse has changed greatly. When Genest first arrived North, there were no farmers markets. Now, the Fireweed Community Market boasts an impressive selection of locally grown foods.

Miche Genest, chef Restaurants are also taking advantage of the availability of produce grown in the Whitehorse-area. “What also amazes me is how accessible certain ingredients are here, but in other parts of Canada they are hard to find. I gave my brother in Toronto a grocery list of Yukon ingredients, and he was unable to find everything,” Genest says. “We have a lot of fantastic grown resources. And it’s nice to be able to share them with everyone.” Other celebrity chefs from the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Alaska will be floating around at other festival events, so be sure to keep your eyes open and taste buds available. The Yukon Culinary Festival aims to celebrate the many flavors that can be found in local food. With so many events taking place, food lovers may end up going into overload mode; not that that’s anything to complain about. f you’re heading out to Circle D Ranch for a few days of music and food this weekend, you’d be well-advised to bring your own eating and drinking gear, or at least a toonie to “rent” a plate. The three-day outing, now known as the Frog Food Festival – Served with Music, is being billed as a “zero-waste” event, and coordinator Lara-Rae Grant is determined to keep it that way. “It will be the first actual event in the Yukon that has gone completely zero waste, so none of the vendors can hand out styrofoam cups, or plates, or cutlery of any sort to serve the foods on,” she says. “There’s been some challenges, but we’re not letting them deter us from our vision of going zero waste. So we are going to go forward with it, and stick with it for the years to come, for sure.” In its first three years, the festival was called the Frog Mountain Music Festival, but ran into “a bit of a kerfuffle” over the use of a nickname for the distinguishing landmark that overlooks Bill and Barbara Drury’s spread beside the Takhini River. After a hiatus, Grant explains, the board decided to move forward this year with a new name and a new focus. “As we kind of recapped, we just realized people here enjoy food and we really weren’t giving enough options at our festival,” she says. “And we really wanted to bring the community of food together and show Yukoners how much is locally-sourced and locally available.”

stay out all weekend, and you get a real festival feel. Great music. Good food.” The musical fare will be provided by nine local bands that will “set the tone for a calm, relaxed day of events,” Grant says. “It’s mostly acoustic until the late hours of the night, then we’re going to kick it up a notch and get the dance floor bouncing.” Friday’s “hoedown” in conjunction with the boar roast will feature Second Cousins, while Saturday night’s band is Soul Migration. “Scott Wilson has put together our music for this year,” she says. “He has a great taste for music, and he’s complemented the music to deal with the land and what we’re trying to do out there, which is really neat. ou may have heard about the bicycles stolen from Cadence Cycle in July. But did you hear about the one that mysteriously appeared? Around July 9, an old one-speed with a coaster-brake showed up in front of 506 Wood Street, just beside Cadence Cycle. It stood on a kickstand, with an old sprung Dunlop

saddle, a flat tire, and a small basket. Bells dangle from its grips; a gold paper star is wired to the rear fender. Papier maché covers the frame and handlebars — gold-toned paper with writing and drawing and possibly a photo transfer in sepia and red ink. Canvas wired to the frame’s centre triangle continues this colour scheme. One side reads “Cosima digitus”, and displays the image of a be-ringed hand with stars at the index and pinkie fingertips, as well as the pinkie-side base of the palm. This side also shows images of a star like the one on the fender, a map of the solar system, and a telescope. This was the side that was facing the street. As for the

other side — maybe you should go and see it. In its diminutive basket, there is a paper telescope of sorts. If you extend it and look up to the light... but I don’t want to give it away. This artwork wasn’t made recently. Rust spots from the frame and fenders appear through the paper. As an installation, this object is lyrical, golden, and adventurous in a genteel, dilapidated way. Is this a vehicle to explore the solar system? At least it takes your imagination for a ride. And in any case, it’s a welcome whimsy in a world of bike thieves and broken dreams. I put a call out on ArtsNet asking the artist to step forward, but no one did. After the theft at Cadence Cycle, shop owner Dean Eyre moved it into his back yard. Cadence Cycle mechanic Massey Baker observed, “I’m surprised it stayed there so long, that it didn’t get stolen. ‘Cause it’s really cool.” Eyre reflects, “It makes me think about the circus. It looks like something you would ride in Venice, if it wasn’t illegal to ride a bicycle in Venice.” Eyre has generously agreed to display this mysterious bicycle, moving it to his front yard daily until the end of August. Cadence Cycle is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday and 10 to 5 on Saturday. Nicole Bauberger is a Whitehorse-based artist and writer.

Behind the Curtain with Ken Bolton

For Patti Flather, Gwaandak is about building connections by sharing our stories W

hen Patti Flather left Vancouver for the Yukon, she had no thoughts of becoming a playwright, let alone co-founder and artistic director of a busy theatre company. “It was not at all part of life,” she says. “My parents were not theatre goers. I had one wonderful teacher in elementary school who did drama with us. We made up plays all the time, and I absolutely loved it. But that was just one year.” Things started to change after she earned a political science degree and found herself at a decision point. “I wanted to get out of Vancouver, where I’d grown up, and just go out on my own a bit,” she says. “I was thinking about different places to move, and my resume, which had sat in a pile at the Whitehorse Star for many, many months, came to the top of the pile.” The move to Whitehorse reconnected Flather with Nancy Campbell, a friend from her days on the University of British Columbia student newspaper, The Ubyssey, which had “a proud tradition of being agents of social change and raising awareness of lots of issues.” In Whitehorse, she soon met a CBC reporter named Leonard Linklater, who would later become her husband. He and Campbell both played pivotal roles in her development as a theatre artist. “Nancy was fully involved with the Guild Theatre, so right away I started going to plays through the Guild,” Flather recalls.

“Then I thought it would be really, really fun to get involved in theatre and meet people. So I auditioned for Romeo and Juliet with the Whitehorse Drama Club, and played Lady Capulet in that.” When she and Linklater entered Nakai Theatre’s 24-hour playwriting competition a year later, they were expecting the first of their two daughters. They emerged from the writing marathon with the first take of a play called Sixty Below, about a young Gwich’in man, fresh out of jail, who struggles to turn his life around. Following extensive workshopping and re-writes, the play premiered at the Yukon Arts Centre in 1993. Further development work led to a 1997 production by Toronto’s Native Earth Performing Arts, which was nominated for several Dora awards, including best play. After writing Sixty Below, Flather returned to UBC to get a Masters degree in creative writing, while Linklater was studying at the Institute of Indigenous Government in Vancouver. In 1999, realizing they shared “a real passion to continue to develop and share Northern stories, including a strong indigenous aboriginal focus,” they founded their own company, Gwaandak Theatre Adventures. “The vision always was that it was a meeting place that included people of different backgrounds, but that it had a really strong First People’s focus. It wasn’t that there was no one doing that, but we didn’t feel there was anyone doing it with that specific a man-

date and focus.” Gwaandak teamed up with Nakai Theatre to produce a millennium-year remount of Sixty Below, complete with a new script. “Gwaandak is a Gwich’in word that can have different meanings, such as storyteller, or telling a story, or news,” Flather explains. “We felt that it really fit, because we really honour the storytelling traditions of thousands of years here in the North, as well as all different cultures. And Leonard is a member of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation, so it just felt like the right name.” Since then, Gwaandak has produced numerous plays, including three penned by Flather – West Edmonton Mall, Where the River Meets the Sea, and The Soul Menders. Gwaandak has grown considerably from a home-based duo working on a project-by-project basis. It has a downtown office, a board of directors, a managing artistic director (Flather) and a general manager (Marjolène Gauthier), plus short-term help as needed. The company took a major leap forward when it decided to commission two original plays by aboriginal playwrights: Café Daughter, by Kenneth T. Williams (produced in 2011 and 2013) and Justice, by Leonard Linklater (2012). For the past five years, it has also hosted a summer series of aboriginal play readings. “It feels to me like we’re achieving what I’d always hoped for, which was not just build-

ing a team for a project and then losing everyone because there’s nothing going on after that,” Flather says. “Now it’s about having a community and keeping those connections with those wonderful people that you’ve worked with on a project, and having a connection with an audience.” Flather hopes to strengthen those connections by taking Gwaandak’s storytelling to more Yukon communities, if not with full productions, at least with readings and short plays by Yukon artists that can be performed “anywhere – on a riverbank, in a theatre, at a convention centre, on a street corner.” And the company will continue building partnerships with other companies across Canada and abroad. From the Back Country with Jozien Keijzer

Our Grand Yukon

Canada Da Parade

J

uly 1st 2014: What a beautiful, sunny day it is amidst this not-yet very warm summer. My husband Don and I are off to our neighbouring province, B.C., by way of the Haines Road, to celebrate Canada Day our particular way. At Klukshu, we check to see if there are salmon in the river. I walk along the banks, bumping into a big porcupine; we both stop in our tracks. Before each of us goes back the way we came, I take some pictures, while the porcupine has her own reasons, first for standing still, and then for heading back. Again on the highway, Don and I spot a black bear swift-

y

ly fleeing into the willows. By a lake right along the road, we stop to watch the swans that nest there. This year they have three cygnets. At Million Dollar Falls, a cow moose is feeding in the water. She leaves at a leisurely pace when she notices we are watching her. On we go, too. We catch fish on the Yukon side of the Blanchard River for our Canada Day feast. Freshly caught fish are so delicious; we never want anything else. Driving further, yet another black bear

The Canada Day Parade

PHOTOS: Jozien Keijzer keeps us company, feasting for a long time on dandelions. We enjoy waiting to watch her magnificent canine teeth from the safety of our car. Higher in the mountains, we finally reach our destination, Three Guardsmen Mountain.

The three rocky spires stand guard close to the border of our beautiful, abundant Canada. Here, we enjoy the tundra at our leisure. Don makes a fire and cooks our fish as I wander the open spaces underneath the mountains looking for flowers. The shooting stars (Dodecatheon frigidum) are our fireworks. For music, we enjoy bird songs, which seems to come from golden-crowned sparrows. And then there are the screaming semipalmated plovers. Walking around more, I seem to be causing a disturbance,

scaring a number of them casually nesting on the open gravel. Driving back, before I fall asleep in the car, comes the highlight of the parade: a mighty grizzly bear poses for us on the highway, then leaping, crosses away. Woken by a thunder shower I think, “Never mind our summer, Canada Day brought the most beautiful weather yet.” And the parade? As always a grand success! Parking Lot Living by Joslyn Kilborn

M

y first friend in Whitehorse is an older man I meet in the automotive section of Canadian Tire the day I arrive. He helps me with my engine and ends up giving me a tour of the city, introducing me to everything from the $1 showers at Robert Service Campground to the old tourism movie in the Visitor Information Centre cinema. It isn’t until the end of our few hours together that I discover he and I are to be neighbours: we will both be living in our vehicles at the Walmart parking lot. Our friendship develops over breakfast. Most mornings I wake to a knock on my camper door and an invitation across the parking lot, where eggs and coffee are being prepared. We don’t have chairs or tables so I lean against the side of his truck while he bends over the propane burner he’s set on the pavement, adding cheese slices or thick hunks of onion to our eggs. When it’s ready, he hands me a plate and a mug — a McDonald’s cup he’s kept for me to re-use — and we stand beside each other, fueling ourselves for the day, exchanging occasional glances with passing shoppers. He and I find ourselves here for the same reason: we love the Yukon. But while for me, living in a vehicle is part of a larger and long-planned philosophical lifestyle experiment, for him it is simply what you do when you don’t

PHOTO: Joslyn Kilborn

My RV and me own a house. As our friendship progresses the knocks on my camper door extend into later periods of the day. There is always something good on the other side — a loaf of bread split from a two-for-one pair, a bulk jar of jam on sale for 89 cents, a giant bag of potatoes he’d like to give me half of. Sometimes, small adventures are on the other side of the door: like tours of the Porter Creek industrial area. Once I was needed to steer a van he was towing behind his truck with a rope.

The Whitehorse Walmart has to be the most beautiful Walmart in Canada. The Yukon River practically runs through it, a van-dweller’s front yard of sorts, offering quiet spots to sit and read, write, meditate, pray. From my camper I can watch eagles circling the water. I fall asleep to the call of gulls. It’s a short bike ride from anywhere a downtowner might like to go, and it’s more eco-friendly than driving in and out of the core to a camping spot each day. Plus it has a washroom.

Living in a parking lot also offers a sense of independence that sleeping on residential or city property doesn’t. You don’t feel like you’re breaking rules or getting in the way — because Walmart is a huge, excessively successful corporation. It has put a lot of pavement down on top of a lot of natural habitat; now these parking lots have become a new kind of habitat. However, it can feel vulnerable living out the private details of daily life in a public space. The fiberglass camper walls that shel-

ter me from the rest of the world are thin. This means I worry about what I might be letting out, but more often I feel myself graced by what finds its way in. Like the other night when, at 10 p.m., I heard a knock on my door and opened it to find my friend with a litre of sherbet he’d left out to melt and a straw in his hand and the words, “I made you a milkshake.” Joslyn Kilborn is a Walmart parking lot-based writer.
