f it weren’t for the colour of the beverages being swirled in the tasting glasses, you would think you had stumbled upon a wine-tasting event.

But, no, this would be the second annual Yukon Beer Festival at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.

“Tasting beer is a very similar process as tasting wine,” says Kaori Torigai, president of the Yukon Beer Festival Society.

“You are looking for the colour and the appearance of the beer and if it has lots of carbonization or not. There’s aroma, there’s mouth-feel, and you are discerning which flavours there are.

“It is very subjective.”

Festival goers will be looking for the nuances between the beer varietals offered.

“There may be a citrusy smell or a grassy aroma or pine from the hops,” Torigai says.“We will literally be tasting from glasses that are shaped in the style of wine glasses because we are swirling the beer a little bit, we want to look at it and put our nose in the glass and smell the aroma.”

Then you spit it out?

“Oh, oh, no, no,” Torigai says seriously. “I have never known anyone who has spit out a beer and I can’t imagine anyone doing so. You definitely drink the beer and you enjoy it.”

With more than 100 of the best hand-crafted beers from all over the United States and Canada under one roof a strategy will be needed to try as many as possible.

Torigai suggests people consider coming to two, or all three sessions to spread out the alcohol intake: Friday, Sept. 25 from 6 to 10 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 26 from 1 to 4 p.m.; and again from 6 to 10 p.m. The admission to each session includes a tasting glass and five tokens for five tastes. How-

She says Yukon Brewing qualifies as a craft brewer because it brews good beer on a smaller scale and even has smaller batches with unique flavours. The local company is taking part in the festival for the second time.

etween September 25th and 27th the Whitehorse arts and cultural community will present a diverse array of activities to celebrate Culture Days. Launched in 2009, Culture Days is an annual call out to arts and culture organizations across Canada to open their doors, curate an exhibition, develop workshops, or otherwise showcase their contributions to Canadian culture.

Culture Days aims to heighten the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians and the arts and culture communities that surround them.

This year the Yukon Film Society will be showcasing three films for free to celebrate Culture Days in Whitehorse. These screenings will take place on Friday, September 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Shipyard’s Park, with the films being projected outside against the city maintenance building once the sun begins to dip.

The evening begins with Waterwalker (Bill Mason, 1984), a full-length documentary about famed naturalist and visual artist Bill Mason. Featuring music

by Canadian troubadour Bruce Cockburn, Waterwalker follows Mason as he travels through the Ontario wilderness by canoe, starting on Lake Superior, then explores winding and rough river waters to the meadowlands of the river’s source. Along the way, Mason paints scenes that capture

his attention and muses about his love of the canoe, his artwork and his own sense of the land. Waterwalker is suitable for the whole family, so bring the kids and dress warm.

The subject of our second screening is the rarely visited Fogo Island in Newfoundland and Labrador. Hey Rosetta! – Fogo Sessions (Mark Bennet, 2015) follows Canadian indie-rock band Hey Rosetta! as they record songs at various locations on the island, interspersed with footage from Colin Low’s 1967 films Introduction to

Fogo Island and The Children of Fogo Island. The film is both a visceral account of the band’s recording process and an intimate look at the island of Fogo.

For the final screening of the evening we delve into the cult movie genre with a late night of bizarre visuals from Guy Maddin’s 1988 feature film debut Tales from the Gimli Hospital. The film tells the tale of a lonely fisherman who contracts smallpox and is admitted to the Gimil Hospital where he begins to compete with other male patients for the affections

of the young female nurses. With Icelandic folklore, black-faced minstrels and badly-acted puppet shows as a form of anesthesia, Maddin’s masterpiece is a cult classic. Half-way between an Ed Wood pulp horror and a surrealist David Lynch psychological thriller, Tales from the Gimli Hospital features mystifying visuals and absurdist humour.

have written a number of columns about Dawson’s habit of recycling building for other purposes. The Old Territorial Courthouse, which has to be passed by everyone entering the town on Front Street, is a prime example of this practice.

Right after the Gold Rush, the federal government was anxious to prove to the world that the new territory was indeed Canadian land. By then the Alaska Panhandle Dispute, which we would eventually lose when the British government caved in to the Americans, was well under way and the territory was packed with American stampeders.

The government was determined to assert Canadian sovereignty in the Yukon and so Thomas Fuller, who would later become the Chief Architect of the federal Department of Public Works, was commissioned to design some very official and stately looking buildings. These included the Old Territorial Administration Building (or OTAB, now the Dawson City Museum), the Old Post Office, the Commissioner’s Residence, the Telegraph Office (now the museum director’s home), the Dawson Public School (which burned in the late 1950s), and the Courthouse.

As time passed many of the legal functions of the Courthouse were transferred to the OTAB and so, when St. Mary’s Hospital burned down, both the Courthouse and the Residence were pressed into service as hospital buildings.

By the 1980s, it was the HQ for Parks administration and, after an earlier reduction in the Parks’ presence in the Dawson, was subsequently leased out to the territorial government, which used the space for Yukon College, a dentist’s office, offices for Yukon Housing, the Dept. of Education and several other functions.

These were all shuffled off to locations in other buildings when it became clear that work needed to be done on the Courthouse, after many years of tenants complaining about air quality issues.

That work was begun just before the Park’s Canada budget cuts in 2012, and came to a halt when the

Using life insurance solutions for charitable giving can be an effective strategy that can help you support registered charities of your choice.

ot dogs and hamburgers flew from the grill into buns and then into mouths at this year’s Yukon Art Centre Volunteer barbecue. The event, which is open to the public, is held each year to thank all the volunteers who help keep the Yukon Arts Centre running. During this time, the organization opens its doors and invites the community as a whole to come out and mingle, and lays out a generous spread of smokies, burgers, vegetarian options and fixings, all served up by Yukon Arts Centre staff members.

The event on Sept. 11 appeared to be well received, with people talking, laughing, and – of course – eating while enjoying the company of their neighbours.

“We couldn’t function without the volunteers,” says Katie Newman, marketing and development director for the Yukon Arts Centre.

“They put in hundreds of hours of work, which is really amazing.”

Newman says that, at the mo-

ment, the Yukon Arts Centre has just under 160 volunteers.

Aside from the good eats and festive atmosphere, the barbecue offered people a sneak people at the exciting things the Yukon Arts Centre will be offering in the upcoming season. The gallery was open, where Neil Graham’s show Shaping Haida Gwaii and the Saskatchewan Craft Council’s Dimensions – a show of textiles, mixed media, metal and other craft work – are currently on display and running through to Nov. 21.

In terms of performances, Newman says, the Centre has an exciting and diverse season planned, including BOOM which plays Oct 15 and 16 and features performer Rick Miller.

“It really speaks to the Boomer generation,” Newman says.

Also in this year’s lineup is the the Rocky Horror Picture Show, which will be performed live Nov. 25-28 under the direction of the Atomic Vaudeville’s Britt Small.

There are various ways to use life insurance to donate to charity. Once a donation amount, percentage or range has been determined, the next step should consider how the gift can be structured to help achieve the objectives. Objectives often include consideration of the tax relief available by gifting now, gifting upon death or a combination of both.

Donating the policy to a charity during the lifetime. Ownership of the policy may be transferred to the registered charity, who must be the irrevocable beneficiary, while the donor is generally bound to pay all premiums due according to the policy terms. Each year the charity would issue a donation receipt for the total amount of premiums paid resulting in a continuing tax credit that may be used by the donor while living. Implementing this strategy, however, means that the estate will not receive a donation tax credit upon the insured’s death.

Gifting all or some insurance proceeds by will. When proceeds are donated by will, the donor does not receive a tax credit for the premiums paid while living. The charity instead will issue a tax receipt upon the insured’s death equivalent to the amount of the donation made.

Naming a charity as a beneficiary of the life insurance. The form and timing of this strategy’s tax credit is similar to one received when making a donation by will. The difference is that a beneficiary designation allows the donor the flexibility to easily change the beneficiary designation should circumstances change. The charity receives its gift in a way that provides a clear line between the charitable gift and gifts for estate beneficiaries, which may minimize the opportunity for conflict.

These strategies help provide the opportunity for personalizing the timing of charitable receipts. Each strategy has different tax consequences. Donors should consult with their tax professional to determine the structure that best suits personal objectives.

Make sure you have a detailed discussion with your financial advisor about the different options that are available to assist you in making an informed decision. Together, with your accountant and lawyer, you can work toward implementing insurance solutions as part of your overall financial strategy.

presentations and workshops at the Mt. McIntyre Recreation Centre called “Psychiatry Under the Influence” and “Reclaiming Childhood.” These events are free and open to the public.

Whitaker began as a historian and science journalist, specializing in medicine, picking up impressive accolades along the way. He was a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT, director of medical publications at Harvard Medical School, and started and then sold his own academic medical publishing house. He has won the George Polk Award for Medical Writing, the National Association of Science Writers award for best magazine article, while a series he co-wrote at the Boston Globe on the abuse of psychiatric patients in medical research was among the three finalists for the 1998 Pulitzer Prize. Whitaker has written fiction and award-winning nonfiction on topics as diverse as science and colonialism, and the early history of Black activism in the U.S. In the mid-1990s a story Whitaker covered dramatically changed his view of psychiatry and psychiatric medication. The book that came out of the research he then took on, Mad in America, not only became a classic (and was named

with Lisa Cosgrove, looks at how psychiatry has been profoundly corrupted in the last 35 years by the interests of the pharmaceutical industry.

Through his own work and that of his website, www.MadinAmerica.com, Whitaker has turned his attention to the “epidemic” of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The increase in prescribing psychiatric medication to children not only comes with serious and lifelong costs for young people, but with the reframing of many of childhood’s difficulties as psychiatric illness. As importantly, pathologizing childhood shifts attention away from measures to enhance constructive social support, family, and community.

Whitaker’s main interest is in informing people and getting them involved. As he and Cosgrove write in Psychiatry Under the Influence, “Psychiatry will not reform itself. Change has to come from an informed public. There needs to be a paradigm shift that will foster an appreciation of the socio-political grounding of emotional distress.”

merican investigative journalist Robert Whitaker is one of the world’s leading authorities on mental health, and in particular, the way the psychiatric profession and the pharmaceutical industry have consistently shifted attention away from a more person-centred approach to healing.

His next-to-last book Anatomy of an Epidemic won the Investigative Reporters and Editors award for the best book of 2010, he has become an honoured keynote speaker at major international conferences, and his website, www.MadinAmerica.com, is home to some of the world’s most critical minds in mental health.

Romeo vs Alec Who will come out victorious? Alec and Romeo face off to be deemed the better cigar.

e may never know what started the infamous feud between Shakespeare’s Montagues and Capulets, but I can tell you the nature of the feud between Romeo and Alec.

The Romeo I refer to is the cigar brand Romeo y Julieta, and Mr. Alec hails from the Alec Bradley Cigar Company in America.

Alec Bradley has been in the cigar business for over 20 years.

Not that impressive when you compare it to Romeo who has been in the cigar world for 140years.

However, Alec is hastily making up for lost time. The American cigar company has launched over

20 different kinds of cigars, while Romeo is around the 10 cigar mark. Today I am going to do a comparison between Romeo y Julieta Reserva and Alec Bradley Cigar Company New York.

First up is the Reserva. This stogie is made with tobacco from Honduras and Ecuador plus a Connecticut wrapper. R and J cigars are known for having a classic, authentic taste. Each cigar makes you feel like you are in the heart of Havana, Cuba. This one is no different. The first third is a taste of hay, cedar, and leather. These flavours fade into some spice, pepper and earth into the second

third. The last third combines all the flavours. Overall this cigar is not complex.

A good indication of this was the label.

R and J always have the same basic red and white labels.

There is no proof that labels make or break a cigar, but for me-the label matters and a nicer presentation means a nicer cigar overall. I am always inclined to use the label as a deciding factor.

For the seasoned cigar smoker, R and J Reserva may bore you a bit, as the flavour doesn’t evolve much over time. I would say this cigar is perfect for an outdoor party at night in the heat of summer. It’s aroma is not too overpowering on the tobacco smell, and it picks up soft hints of spice and jasmine. If you are a beginner, you can definitely try this one and not worry about it being too strong.

Moving on to the Alec Bradley

and the big apple. The New York cigar comes in different sub categories: Declaration, Independence, Liberty and Six-two. I have the Declaration. The tobacco used for New York is a mix of Honduran and Nicaraguan. The label is quite nice, big and thick, and boasts a nice art deco style drawing of the Empire State Building.

This is the second Alec Bradley cigar I have had, and so far it is off to a good start. The first notes have hay and apples. Not sure if they included the apple taste as a play on words, but it works.

Further into the first third is an apple and spice taste. This slowly transitions into a cream and spice taste for the second third. Once you get into the last third, the spice becomes more powerful with hints of cherry and black licorice. If you are looking for a good cigar to enjoy mid morning during

autumn,you can’t go wrong with Alec Bradley New York.

The Alec Bradley New York definitely has more of an interesting flavour palate than the Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real, however the experience is ultimately subjective. If you want something that is a bit different than your average cigar, Alec is the way to go. If you like your smokes to be classic and no fuss, Romeo is your choice.

Both of these sticks are medium bodied, so cigar smokers of all levels can enjoy.

The final verdict: Julieta shall have a secret steamy affair with Alec, but will return to Romeo as he is the best as what he does.

Whitehorse rapper MC TurMoiL releases first album

J

onathan Steel, known by his nom-de-rap MC TurMoiL , has released his first CD, Black and Green. He’s also released a video for the album’s hit track, “Mr. Myagi.”

I must approach this review with caution, since despite Steel being a friend of mine, his brand of music isn’t. This is entirely my fault: I suffer from hiphophobia, a fear of rap. The first beats and the first yo are often enough to send me running from the room before the song even starts.

That said, Steel has mad skillz, tossing down ill rhymes with the speed, rhythm and acumen of a bestselling artist. It’s gotten him recognition: on this album, he works with producer Ace Ha, who has worked with Rock Mafia, Verbal Phantom and Selena Gomez.

Hiphop producers provide the beats, the electronic backing tracks and samples that artists rap over. Ace Ha’s beats are catchy and multilayered, heavy bass rumbling under synthesized drum tracks, funky vocal samples, and, oddly enough on the track “Singing,” a fragment of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner.”

Steel departs from standard rap clichés, braggadocio and posturing. In “Mr. Myagi,” directed by Gary Bremner, a stereotypical rapper slouches in huge gold chains, only to be revealed as a wannabe.

Steel forgoes the chains and posing of his rival, preferring video games, puzzles, hanging with friends. The posturing is unnecessary since he’s real: the bling is

Steel has opened for touring Canadian hip hop artists such as Karl Wolf and Sweat Shop Union, in addition to Merkules, who appears on “Sub Par.” He says of people hiphophobes like me, “I think people need to be more open to hip hop.

People hear the word hip hop and they hear the word rap and they shut it down, without giving it a chance.”

ike so many Yukoners during this crazy low-bush cranberry season, I’m clearing out the freezer to make room for berries. In the process I’ve unearthed several treasures: 10 kilos of pork bones, 3 duck carcasses, 2 whole Taku River sockeye, undated, and best of all, 3 bags of spruce tips, harvested in 2014, that I’d completely forgotten about.

I’ve roasted the bones and the carcasses and turned them into stock, dry-cured and smoked the salmon and, with the happy spruce tip windfall, made a big batch of syrup, enough to last until spring. That is, under normal circumstances.

But there’s a problem. I’ve found a new use for spruce tip syrup.

On a recent visit to the Tasting Room at the Port Chilkoot Distillery in Haines Alaska, my friend and fellow cook Lyn Fabio ordered a Spruced Up Old Fashioned from Macky Cassidy, the charming manager. This crisp, cool, revitalizing cocktail offered up a triple dose of spruce flavour—in spirit, sweetener and bitters.

The spirit was the distillery’s 50 Fathoms Gin, a crisp, Londondry style gin with up-front notes of juniper and, the element that transforms the gin into something truly unique, a bright and elusive shiver of fresh spruce at the finish.

Professional tasters love this gin — in 2015 it won gold at the American Craft Spirits Association Tasting Awards in Austin, Texas, and double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

“We were competing with the big name gins there so we’re really proud of that one,” says Heather Shade, co-founder of Port Chilkoot Distillery with her husband, Sean Copeland. Pretty good for a distillery that launched its first smallcraft spirit just two years ago.

Shade and Copeland had long been fans of micro-brewed beer

and small-batch craft spirits.

They loved Haines, too, but in order to stay they needed work.

So they combined passion with practicality, renovated a historic, Fort Seward building (Copeland, a master carpenter, did the work) installed stills and barrels, started distilling, and opened their doors in September 2013. In 2014, after successfully lobbying the State of Alaska for new legislation allowing tasting rooms in distilleries, they added the Tasting Room and hired Cassidy, who shares their enthusiasm for local flavours and invents many of the cocktails Shade says the beauty of smallbatch distilling is the flexibility it provides — they can experiment with wild and cultivated indigenous ingredients to make uniquely flavoured, truly northern spirits.

Local farmers custom-grow botanicals, and Cassidy incorporates made-in Haines artisanal products into her cocktails. Dipper Kitchen provides highbush cranberry and other syrups, while the spruce tip bitters (a brilliant use of spruce tips) in my new favourite cocktail were made by Moxie Bitters, a tiny cottage industry owned by local Margaret Freidenauer, who will soon move in-house and sell her line under the distillery’s label.

You can buy these products at the Tasting Room — another great reason to visit the distillery. Fabio and I each brought a small vial of spruce tip bitters and a rather larger vial of Fathom 50 Gin home with us, eager to reproduce that dynamite cocktail. The Distillery makes its own spruce tip syrup — we figured we could do that, too.

I found the forgotten spruce tips, made the syrup, and took a jar over to Fabio’s house. And now she shares my problem. The supply of syrup is dwindling. Another visit to Haines may be required.

But that’s okay, because there’s the fabulous new bourbon to try (again) and the absinthe made with locally-grown herbs (Arte-

The key ingredients in Port Chilkoot Distillery’s Spruced Up Old Fashioned

Spruce Tip Syrup 4 cups (1L) fresh or frozen spruce tips 4 cups (1L) water 1 ½ cups (325 mL) sugar 2 tbsp. (30 mL) fresh lemon juice Bring water and spruce tips to the boil over high heat, reduce heat to medium low and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to steep anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours.

Strain through cheesecloth into a clean pot. Stir in sugar and lemon juice, bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Pour into sterilized jars, cool and refrigerate. Will keep for up to four months.

Makes about three 1-cup (250 mL) jars.

Spruced Up Old Fashioned Adapted from the Tasting Room 2 oz. 50 Fathoms Gin ½ oz. spruce tip syrup 3 drops spruce tip bitters lemon wedge Stir gin, syrup and bitters with ice. Strain and pour into a rocks glass over one large ice cube. Squeeze lemon wedge over top and drop into glass. misia absinthium, lemon balm, anise hyssop), and clearly I’ll need more gin…

Fighting childhood obesity one bite at a time

Spiced stuffed baked apples As a kid I loved pie. We never had any at home, but every year for Thanksgiving we would visit a family friend, Craig, who would make three pies including my favourite – apple. Over the years, I have found healthier ways to make pie, including baked apples. The added bonus of this recipe is that kids can fill their own apples for baking, which is as fun as it is delicious.

You can make this recipe with any kind of apple. I find the best for baking are those that are mid-sweet, such as the Empires and Spartans. Gala apples would be an especially sweet treat.

Serves 4.

INGREDIENTS 4 apples, cored Pecans, broken into pieces or chopped Cranberries, fresh or frozen

Cinnamon Chopped apple from when you hollowed the apples out Maple syrup (optional)

METHOD • Preheat oven at 425� • Place the hollowed out apples in a baking dish.

• Mix the chopped pecans, cranberries, chopped apple, cinnamon and the drizzle of maple syrup in a bowl.

• Stuff the apples with the mix to the top.

• Bake in the oven until soft.

Sweet and lightly spiced baked apples are a wholesome alternative to apple pie.

to find that the asthma-fighting powers of apples began before birth. In a 5-year study, the children of mothers who ate apples while pregnant had a lower chance of developing asthma and related symptoms in childhood.

What is it about apples? One medium raw apple, with the peel, packs over four grams of fibre and loads of antioxidants – all with fewer than 100 calories and zero fat. And, more than that, they’re delicious, naturally sweet, and easy to eat. While there are tons of varieties, Fuji, Red Delicious, Northern Spy, and Gala apples are those that boast the most nutritional benefits.

For children with small mouths and youth with braces, slicing apples is the best way to ensure they’re being eaten. In a 2013 study, researchers sought out a way to increase consumption of fruit in school cafeterias. They found that when apples were presliced, students were 71 per cent more likely to choose and eat them.

Beyond eating apples whole or sliced, try some new and tasty ways to get them into your kids’ diet. Add them to smoothies, chop them up and add them to granola or oatmeal, or even serve slices with a little almond butter – the possibilities are endless.

Whichever way you choose, keep the nutrient-packed peel and opt for organic where possible.

Apples consistently top the Environment Working Group’s Dirty Dozen list, which are the 12 foods that are highest in pesticide load.

Nutrtion Journal aimed to determine whether there was a connection between eating apples and childhood obesity. Researchers followed more than 13,000 children for seven years, over a quarter of them ate apples or apple products. Those that ate apples were 30 per cent less likely to be obese.

orget the metronome, and don’t even bother trying to play like someone else, no matter how much you admire them.

“When I was young, I figured that out real quick, because it was uncomfortable; it didn’t work,” says legendary drummer Louis Hayes.

“You’re influenced by all sorts of things, and you can do certain things you’re exposed to, but you can’t really sound or play like anyone else,” the 78-year-old jazz master adds. “Everyone is different, and your body is shaped differently. Everyone, as the blood flows through our body, changes up all the time. We all have our own natural rhythm.”

That’s not to say a budding musician shouldn’t have heroes, or mentors. Among the drummers he admired most while growing up were Philly Joe Jones and “Papa” Jo Jones, whom Hayes considers his mentor.

As a teenager in Detroit in the early 1950s, Hayes was also exposed to many towering jazz figures of that era.

“Kenny Burrell. I thought he was the most magnificent guitarist I’d ever heard when I was coming up in Detroit,” he says. “You had people like Elvin Jones playing drums, and Tommy Flanagan playing piano. Barry Harris was there, Trevor Adams was there playing baritone saxophone, Dorothy Ashby playing the harp, Yusef Lateef, Paul Chambers – andthey had a certain sound. People played a certain way in Detroit. And Barry Harris was a marvellous teacher for a lot of young people, and he’s still doing the same thing here in New York, and still teaching in different places in the world.”

By a strange irony, although his high school in West Detroit had a jazz program, Hayes never had an opportunity to play in the band. Still, by the age of 15 he was fronting his own band at local teen clubs.

“Detroit was a good place for me to grow up in and listen to these marvelous artists that I was listening to at the time, and the direction they were going in, and I was basically moving in the same direction.”

vessel that brought him together with pianist/composer Horace Silver. Hayes was just 18 when Silver hired him as drummer for the new “hard bop” quintet he established after splitting with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

That also introduced the young drummer to a new town, where he still lives 60 years later.

He was part of a larger migration of Detroit musicians to the Big Apple at the time.

“Naturally I knew those other guys in Detroit, but they didn’t know me too well, because I was about 10 years younger than they were,” Hayes says. “But I caught up in New York real fast, because I had the opportunity to come to New York about the same time that they did.”

I never wanted to live in California. I never wanted to live anyplace but in this area where I am.

He played with Adderley until 1965, when he replaced Ed Thigpen as drummer for the Oscar Peterson Trio for a couple of years.

Over the decades, Hayes has led numerous bands of his own and recorded 17 albums. But that just scratches the surface of his output.

The list of jazz giants he has played or recorded with reads like a DownBeat magazine Who’s Who of the art form: John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Wes Montgomery, Dexter Gordon, Woody Shaw, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard. The list goes on, and on, and on.

Is there one band leader in particular he regrets not playing with?

“Sure. Miles Davis. I had the opportunity, but I couldn’t do it, because I was with Cannonball at the time, and that relationship we had was very high-level; I mean, it was family,” he says. “But I would have loved to have had opportunity to experience the feeling of playing with Miles Davis, and recording.”

That family relationship he had for six years with the man he calls “Cannon” still plays a prominent role in the drummer’s musical career. One of two groups he currently leads is called Louis Hayes and the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band.

That’s the group he will be bringing north for the season’s first Jazz on the Wing concert at the Yukon Arts Centre on Sunday, September 27.

Other personnel in the quintet are Vincent Herring on alto sax, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, pianist Rick Germanson and bass player Michael Glynn.

“Our program is subject to change is all we say, but we basically play music that I recorded during the period of time from 1959 to ‘65 – that period of time that I was with Cannon.”

A Comedy That is Actually Warm and Funny The 2013 film Enough Said is available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library

nother comedy that’s not really a comedy – that’s been my reaction to many contemporary films that seem to centre on the sad-clown school of funny, balanced heavily on the side of making me sad, and not in the fun way. So I wasn’t hopeful about Enough Said, a romantic comedy released in 2013 and available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library. My reservations were unrewarded– Enough Said is a warm film that’s authentic and funny.

When Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) meets Albert (James Gandolfini), she’s mostly preoccupied with the prospect of her daughter leaving home to go to college. But she makes an unexpected connection with Albert, also divorced, with a daughter the same age and also about to leave home, to his dismay. They tentatively begin a relationship, hardly believing they could still be lucky in love. In fact, Eva doesn’t believe it and when she realizes the ex-husband of her new friend Marianne (Catherine Keener) is Albert, she can’t stop herself from probing further into that ill-fated marriage.

The fastidious poet Marianne couldn’t be more different than shambolic Albert and as her petty complaints about the husband she left accumulate, they reveal more about her than him. But Eva’s anxiety-clouded judgement keeps her hanging on Marianne’s every word.

“She’s like a human Trip Advisor,” she says to her friend Sarah (Toni Collette).

Director Nicole Holofcener (Friends with Money), who also wrote the screenplay, draws in Eva’s other relationships, such as with Sarah and her husband Will, who like to have her around, according to Eva, “so they don’t have to be alone together,” and with her daughter Ellen (Tracey Fairaway) who’s started to distance herself in anticipation of moving away. The largest fish I’ve ever sort of caught

sually when I fish it’s in a canoe or off the shore with lots of casting and reeling. This particular weekend our friend Dave invited us out on his boat in Teslin. I was excited when we got this big guy on the line and started to reel in. It was pretty tough so I handed over the line to Dave and took on camera duty. Once we got it in we were amazed by how huge it was - easily the largest fish I’ve ever caught. In fact it was just a hair over regulation size so we put this bad-boy back in the water.

n October 1st The Guild Hall Society will kick off its 2015/16 season with Bert V. Royal’s dark comedy Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead. The play is considered an unauthorized parody of the iconic Peanuts characters created by Charles M. Schulz. The story imagines the gang as teenagers with all the ups, downs and drama that come with growing up.

However this is not your run of the mill comic strip.

Anthony Trombetta who is currently in his second year as artistic director with The Guild Hall explains that it has some laugh out loud moments, but, as he puts it “dark things do happen in the show. It’s a raw uncensored look at teenage life.”

Trombetta had known about

the play for a while and when he finally read it, and fell in love with the script.

Trombetta also brought back veteran director and actor Clinton Walker to help mold and find a fine balance between the shows humour, darker undertones and personal messages. Walker, who resides in Toronto, is up to the task bringing a true professional theatre experience to the Guild.

“With Clinton, the more experienced actors get a workout and, for those who have never acted before they get a crash course 401 style,” Trombetta says.

“He gives a great product… delivers every time.”

Walker, who is directing his sixth show at the Guild, is happy to be back in the Yukon.

“One of the reasons I think I

got picked was to really nurture a new crop of students,” Walker says. “Out of the eight actors in the cast, five have never graced the guild hall stage. There’s a great mix of people who are from this neck of the woods and out of the territory.” In a cool nod to The Guild’s 2008 production of You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown Kayla Ware will reprise her role as “Lucy,” though her characters and the two shows are vastly different and have no connection to each other.

Content is one of Walker’s major challenges.

“It’s a heightened look at teenage culture, and a very specific portion of teenage culture – they’re all pretty troubled, all really self-involved, that could come in two dimensions,” Walker says. “My challenge is respecting the playwright, but that the same time trying to put some love in these people, ensuring that we have some empathy for them.”

He also decided to set the show in the 1990s, where he feels it was a simpler time to be a teenager.

“There’s something a little more raw about the ‘90s experience, there was an anger that defined them,” Walker says. “Now it’s almost fine to be despondent – irony has seemed to invade today’s teen culture.

“I think it’s important to know that this play is not your average Peanuts, and it’s finding that challenge between campy and fun, and that the audience cares.”

If there’s one message that Clinton would like to convey to everyone is The aim is for Dog Sees God to be a fun, thought provoking work of theatre that is carefully crafted by our community of artists, volunteers, and professionals.

Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread, for this reason tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for any extended period! Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable.

The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.

If you’ve ever been “temporarily unsure of your location” here are some tips

I

bet almost every backpacker, hunter or any other outdoor person has been lost in the bush, at least for a short time.

Most won’t admit it, but will agree that they were, “temporarily unsure of their location” or “I got turned around.”

It’s a blow to your ego to come clean and admit you were lost.

It is extremely common, but most people manage to find their way out and their secret is safe because no search party was involved. Human beings are control freaks and being lost or even uncertain which direction to go puts us out of control and we find that very hard to deal with.

In a “being lost” situation most injuries happen in the first day and often in the first few hours.

This is because “Panic” often results from the realization that you don’t know where you are or which way to go. Unless some basic rules are followed, this panic situation takes over completely and the person starts to run. This running results in tripping, falling down hills, bumping into trees and rocks and generally completely exhausting the victim. The per-

son gets exhausted, gets wet from perspiration and manages to get nothing done to make their situation better.

What a person should do in this situation, and it is not easy, is think logically and put a survival plan to work. First of all when lost, a person should admit it. Even by yourself, say it out loud, stay in one place and light a fire. Doing these things keeps your mind in a positive vibe and keeps panic from taking over. You may well have to force yourself to stay with your survival plan, but positive thinking will get you through the situation.

Positive activities such as getting enough water and firewood to last the night and planning a shelter are essential to your well-being.

Fire does five things for us in a situation like this. It keeps us warm, dries our clothes, cooks our food, acts as a signal to searchers and most important fire makes us feel better about whatever situation we are in. Who hasn’t felt the calming influence of standing by a fire?

Staying put is vital as search and rescue people have quite often found where the lost person

was, but is there no longer because they decided it was better to keep moving.

While staying put, go through your gear to see what you have to make the situation a little better for you. If you were smart enough to pack and carry a survival kit you’ll have plenty of fire-lighting ability, some shelter building material, a tin cup to heat water for your tea, or hot chocolate and maybe even some GORP to munch on while you wile away the hours waiting for someone to arrive and lead you home.

Getting lost can happen to any of us but staying safe in that situation depends on our ability to stay calm and follow some basic rules.

I decided to go with the red sunflowers. The seed packet said Velvet Queen, which sounded enticing.

I’ve never seen red sunflowers before, but I thoughtthey would look awesome come September. Planting began mid-June. By the time mid-August came around, they were blooming.

Their colour was red with hues of gold.

The petals, fine and delicate. I was surprised to see how many bloomed from the branches of the stems. About four or five per branch, which totaled close to 20 per stalk. I did plant several seeds, but only the one stalk grew.

The Cozy Feeling of Being Absorbed in a Book Yukon writers talk about the books that inspired them as children

s a kid and a teenager I read a lot. I remember taking home five to seven books every week from the library of the small town I was living in. I was scared that someday I would have finished all the books and there wouldn’t be anything left to read. Luckily that never happened.

Whitehorse poet Jamie Sharpe never worried about running out of reading material: as a kid he liked to study the Encyclopedia Britannica.

“I remember the day my parents tracked down an Encyclopedia Britannica set in the Bargain Finder – yesteryears’ Craigslist – and (put it) in my room,” Sharpe says. “Although I’m sure I had lots of kids’ books at the time, what mishaps befell Charlie in a Chocolate Factory was far less interesting to me than trying to find out How much does a blue whale weigh? or What does the flag of Bermuda look like?”

But he also enjoyed all of John Bellairs’ books, including The House with a Clock in Its Walls and The Mummy, the Will, and the Crypt. Bellairs was an American fantasy and mystery writer. The House with a Clock in Its Walls tells the story of Lewis Barnavelt who lives with his mysterious uncle, who turns out to be a warlock.

I was curious to find out if mystery-writer Marcelle Dubé read a lot of the genre as a child. But she says that she loved reading Jack London’s White Fang and Call of the Wild, Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince.

“The stories that really fired my imagination were Grimm’s fairy tales – sanitized, of course – and Lafontaine’s fables.”

Dubé read books in English and French.

“As I was growing up, my parents were still learning each other’s language: my Mom is English, Dad is French,” she says.

Dubé says one book stood out for her: Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink. It’s a novel for children about a tomboy named Caddie who experiences a series of adventures in the Wisconsin woods.

“As a child I wanted to be smart and brave like her,” Dubé says.

Children’s books provide great role models. For author Jessica Simon it was Harriet the Spy a book by Louise Fitzhugh published in 1964. Harriet lives in New York and wants to be a writer when she is a grown up. She observes her classmates and writes notes about them.

“I read the book until the pages fell out.

I was Harriet. I even still have a blue hoodie that I cherish and all my notebooks,” Simon says.

Simon says she didn’t have many friends as a kid, but she did have a lot of time to read – and loved reading. While growing up she read classics like George Bernard Shaw: “He was my favourite playwright. What that guy could do with English fascinated me.”

Although Simon has written a series of adventure-crime novels – her second novel about detective Markus Fanger is set to be published in 2017 – that type of book didn’t catch her attention until she was older.

“Oddly, I didn’t read many mysteries as a kid, although I seem to be making up for it now,” she says. “I think, like most writers, I read a lot as a child and still carry many of those memories and images around with me as an adult,” Joanna Lilley says.

She is currently working on poems about extinct and endangered animals and received an Advanced Artist Award from the Government of Yukon this year to help her with the research.

“I care about animals a great deal, and have done as long as I remember, and I’m sure all the books I read as a child had something to do with that,” says Lilley.

As a kid she loved Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White and Moshie Cat by Helen Griffiths, which is a book about a rejected kitten.

Her favorite author while growing up was Joyce Stranger, who wrote novels about animals and their relationships with humans.

She also read a lot of Enid Blyton’s books as a child, such as the Famous Five and the Adventure Series. Thinking about her favourite children’s books, Lilley remembers how much she loved the cozy feeling of being absorbed in a book.

“I loved Enid Blyton so much I kept reading her books over and over again, to the point that my mother took them all away from me and put them in a battered grey suitcase in the attic. She wanted me to move on in my reading. I don’t remember if she locked the suitcase or not but I do remember finding it and sneaking the books back down to my room,” she says.

Free program for pre-schoolers opens up their world

T

of teeth and a big toothbrush to show them good techniques for brushing. She gave them the view into their mouths that only

here is a place to take little children, for free, six days a week, to play and have fun.

There are books, toys, a piano, a big couch, crafts to do, sometimes even snacks.

This fun place is called the Family Literacy Centre, which is a pretty serious name. But they are serious about having fun.

The goal of the Family Literacy Centre staff is to help children develop the skills they need to be able to read, be comfortable with numbers, and comfortable in a learning environment – and they do that by showing children a fun time.

In addition to making kids and adults feel welcome to play with the toys, read the wall full of books, and hang out chatting, the Family Literacy Centre Manager, Katy Mead, and her team also offer one-hour programs Monday to Friday from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. During the onehour program the coordinator will read the children a story, do songs with them, and make a craft that is linked to the ideas being explored.

Every day has a different theme: Mondays is learning through physical play, Tuesdays is songs and rhymes, Wednesdays is learning about food and nutrition – including making something to eat, Thursdays is the French program, and on Fridays they now offer a program called People in Your Neighborhood.

This new program introduces children to real people, doing real jobs in the community.

The first session was on Sept.

10. On that day the children got to meet a dental hygienist. She bedazzled them with a big set

The visits are like show-andtell with professionals in the community.

“It’s the props that the person brings – like their uniform – those are the things that grab the kids,” she says.

“And they’ll learn about how the occupation fits into their world.”

The unsuspecting children don’t realize that they are learning. They just laugh and sing and play all the while their minds are expanding.
