rmed with everything they need to make art, plus some delicious egg salad sandwiches, 12 Yukon artists left their lives behind and tucked themselves into the woods to make art together.

Members of the Southern Lakes Artist Collective got together on three occasions, to do 3-day art-making marathons. They opened their minds to the techniques of their colleagues: paper making, working with clay, working with found objects, welding.

They say sparks flew, they were inspired, they laughed, and they worked together. They shared their rocks, driftwood, techniques, and creativity.

The results can be seen in the new art show, called Rocks Paper Scissors, showing at the Arts Underground in Whitehorse until Sept. 26.

Lawrie Crawford, a painter and member of the collective, observes that each of the artists in the collective is accomplished in their area, with decades of training and refining their craft – but the three-day art sleepovers were a chance to play, try new techniques and collaborate.

“Donald (Watt), he’s a world champion snow carver,” Lawrie Crawford says. “And Helen O’Connor, she’s been invited to international conferences. Then Sandra Storey, she has been invited to ceramic workshops in Seoul, Korea.”

Crawford tells the story of meeting a woman in the United States who said she studied Sandra Storey’s art during her undergraduate degree.

“Sometimes the Yukon doesn’t know what we have here,” she says.

But the 3-day intensives got the artists out of the isolation of their studios, and had the effect of re-kindling the fire of creativity.

“It was kind of like art camp,” says Lawrie Crawford. “We’re serious artists who like to have fun. And it keeps the life in the art.

“It’s an alive-ness that’s essential for good art, because good art makes you tear up, or go ‘Ah-ha.’ To do that you need a spark within that gets transferred to the piece, to the other people who experience it.”

Then three days were spent working with driftwood, metal and found objects at Paul and Jeanine Baker’s place in Crag Lake.

The artwork in the Rock Paper Scissors show got their spark of life at the collaborative art sessions, then the artists refined them over nine months.

Sculptor Sandra Storey, based in Tagish, collaborated on two dozen pieces of art in the process. She put a lot of time into an installation in the show that features 22 pod/slug-shaped things. She just got intrigued with the shape, and played with it. They are made with paper, clay, and glass.

There is no message at the heart of that installation. It was all about the process of making those slug-like pod thingeys.

“It was all about play – it wasn’t to say anything – so it was really liberating as an artist,” Storey says. “ In her solo work, a message of hope for the environment comes through in one way or another. It’s a concern close to her heart.

But with her collaborations in this show, it was an opportunity to explore other media.

“It was a total release from my studio practice,” she says. “Just leaving my studio practice and go where I have no idea what is going to happen today. I was picking flowers and pulling them through paper pulp, and putting them in trees.”

With all the ideas flying around, different techniques being explored, and artists floating in and out of each other’s projects, the group decided to show the work without attaching their names to

the pieces. They were generated under the condition of creative sparks flying.

The Rock Paper Scissors show runs until Sept. 26 at Arts Underground, which is located at 305 Main Street. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

eorge Maratos was just three years old when Terry Fox was becoming a household name across Canada and elsewhere.

Still, he claims to have a “kind of” memory of the young B.C. runner’s heroic 1980 odyssey known as the Marathon of Hope.

“My parents were gripped by it, and I have a feeling that kind of resonated with me,” he says.

Fox was a basketball player and long-distance runner studying kinesiology at Simon Fraser University and hoping to become a physical education teacher.

Then, a few months short of his 19th birthday, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, which resulted in the amputation of his right leg just above the knee.

Three weeks after the operation, he was walking again with the assistance of an artificial leg.

That was in 1977, the year Maratos was born.

That year, Fox joined Rick Hansen’s wheelchair basketball team, with which he would win three national championships, and later became a North American Wheelchair Basketball Association all-star.

While undergoing a year-anda-half of chemotherapy, he conceived conceive an ambitious plan to give something back to medical science that would also give hope and support to his fellow cancer patients.

He would run across Canada, east to west, with the hope of raising $1 million for cancer research. He later increased that goal to $10 million, and eventually to $24 million, representing $1 for each Canadian at that time.

On April 12, 1980, Fox dipped his prosthesis into the Atlantic Ocean as the symbolic beginning of an 8,000-km trek toward the Pacific. For the next 143 days, he maintained a gruelling daily pace of 42 km -- the equivalent of running a marathon every single day.

On September 1, just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, the run came to a sudden halt when Fox was admitted to hospital with chest pains and a wracking cough.

The next day, he told a stunned nation his cancer had returned and moved into his lungs. On June 28, 1981 -- exactly one month short of his 23rd birthday -- Terry Fox died in New Westminster, B.C. Before he was forced to end his run, his efforts had raised $1.7 million for cancer research. Since then, more than $650 million has been raised in his name, mostly

through noncompetitive running and walking events held each year in as many as 60 different countries.

For the past eight years, Maratos has headed up the group of volunteers that puts together the annual Terry Fox Run in Whitehorse. His involvement started almost by accident.

“I wasn’t aware the run was happening. I was just walking by and saw a small gathering of folks and kind of thought, ‘I think we can make this bigger,’ and mentioned that,” he says.

“Eight years later, here I am organizing the event.”

This year’s run takes place Sunday, September 20, with registration starting at noon in the new sheltered area of Rotary Peace Park and the run itself kicking off at 1 p.m.

“You can rollerblade, you can walk, you can bike, you can run.

It’s just a loop of the Millennium Trail, so it’s really accessible for all types,” Maratos says.

Registration is free, but organizers hope to raise $10,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation through donations.

The Terry Fox Run attracts people of all ages -- and sometimes their pets Average turnout has been about 250 in recent years, but with added attention to the fact this is the national event’s 35th anniversary, Maratos is looking to attract as many as 500 participants this time around.

“We have a live band that’s going to be there, and we have a barbecue ever year. It’s a real family-friendly event. It’s more about just coming out and supporting the cause and remembering Terry Fox for the person he was.”

Madagascar style dinner in Whitehorse raises awareness for socio-economic issues

ff the southeast coast of Africa lies the beautiful island of Madagascar.

While the children’s Madagascar movies paint a nice scenic picture of the island, there are serious issues taking place.

Rachelle Czerwinski was born and raised in the northwestern region of Madagascar and now lives in Vancouver. She left the country in 1984 when she met her Canadian husband. In 2009 a political coup took place, and sent the island in economic and social turmoil. She returned for a visit later that year to help her community.

“Many years ago I bought a plot of land because I did not want to see it get into the wrong hands,” Czerwinski says. “In 2009 I donated it to be used for the community.” During her return, she help the community of 100 people create a garden and build a well. It was hard work at first, but after a while they managed to grow corn, eggplant, tomatoes, and medicinal herbs.

Now, Czerwinski’s goal is to establish a summer camp for the children in the village where her garden grows. To help bring this goal to life, Czerwinski teamed up with Whitehorse resident Barbara McLeod to bring forth a culinary/charity event called Discover Madagascar.

“There are many children over there who have never even held a crayon,” Czerwinski says. “My goal is to create a week long camp where they can practice art, and have full meals.

For this dinner, which takes place at McLeod’s home, true Madagascar fare will be served.

Czerwinski says Madagascar cuisine has a mixed influence of Indian, Chinese, and Polynesian styles. Some of the items being served will include a coconut curry, lentil stew with yams and spinach, Madagascar Slaw – which is their take on coleslaw with the green and red colours of the national flag. Dessert will feature a tropical fruit salad, and a special surprise featuring vanilla from Madagascar. Since the event is taking place in Whitehorse, Czerwinski thought it would also be nice to pay tribute to her host in the form of a cheesecake with Yukon berries.

Once Czerwinski has completed her goal of creating a kids’ camp, she has a few more goals lined up.

“I want to be able to provide solar-powered stoves for families,” Czerwinski says. “A lot of damage is done to the forests because trees are cut down to be used as coal.”

Czerwinski would also like to educate inhabitants about environmental responsibility.

“I know old habits die hard, but if something is not done, there will be no more trees in 50 yeas,” she says.

One particular issue that hits close to home is the illegal exportation of rosewood. What’s even more infuriating is that the exportation is not regulated, and the millions of dollars made do not go to help communities, Czerwinski says.

Czerwinski hopes that by teaching people how to grow food, they can have more sustainable options and the ecosystem will have a chance to rebuild itself.

operation and encourage “voluntourism.”

“If people can come and enjoy the island, and help with teaching crafts or English, that would be great, she says.

“Feed” your portfolio. Through the proper combination of fertilizers and irrigation, farmers seek to maximize the growth of their crops. And if you want to give your portfolio the opportunity to grow, you need to “feed” it with the right mix of investments.

This generally means you’ll need to own a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks and stock-based securities. Keep in mind, though, that the value of these types of investments will fluctuate, sometimes sharply — and there’s no guarantee you won’t lose some or all of your principal.

Be patient. Crops don’t grow overnight. Farmers know that they will put in countless hours of work before they see the fruits of their labours. And they know that, along the way, they will likely experience setbacks caused by a variety of issues: too much rain, too little rain, insect infestations — the list goes on and on.

When you invest, you shouldn’t expect to “get rich quick” — and you can expect to experience obstacles in the form of bear markets, economic downturns, changes in legislation and so forth.

Continuing to invest for the long term and focusing more on longterm results than short-term success can help you as you work toward your objectives.

Respond to your investment “climate”. Farmers can’t control the weather, but they can respond to it. So, for example, when it’s been dry for a long time, they can boost their irrigation. As an investor, you can’t control the economic “climate,” but you can make adjustments. To illustrate: If all signs point to rising long-term interest rates, which typically have a negative effect on long-term bond prices, you may need to consider reducing your exposure, at least for a while, to these bonds.

Diversify. Farmers face a variety of risks, including bad weather and fluctuating prices. They can help combat both threats through diversification. For instance, they can plant some crops that are more drought-resistant than others, so they won’t face complete ruin when the rains don’t fall. As an investor, you should also diversify; if you only owned one type of financial asset, and that asset class took a big hit, you could sustain large losses. But spreading your dollars among an array of investments — such as stocks, bonds, cash and other vehicles — may help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. (Be aware, though, that diversification by itself can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.)

Relatively few of us toil in the fields to make our living. But by understanding the challenges of those who farm the land, we can learn some techniques that may help us to nurture our investments.

The Tomboy show is set to provide an entertaining yet informative overview as a cross between story-telling, music, and humour.

Coyote also hopes that some aspects of the show will resonate with the audience on some level.

“I want them to consider what our rigid gender binary costs all of us, not just those who don’t fit it, but all of us,” Coyote says.

he term tomboy usually refers to a girl who has “male”interests, and has a preference for “male” clothing.

You know, the type of girl who likes to wear sweats, plays soccer with the guys and wants be an auto mechanic. That was then.

Now, gender fluidity is becoming more common.

Some people don’t even want to identify as either male or female. Bringing the subject of gender neutrality to light is Whitehorse native Ivan Coyote. Currently, Coyote – who prefers to be referred to as they, rather than he or she – resides in Vancouver, but they will be back in Whitehorse on Sept. 17 at the Yukon Arts Centre, to perform in the Tomboy Survival Guide.

The show features four performers: Sally Zori on drums, Alison Gorman playing trumpet, Pebbles Willekes on bass, and Coyote on sax.

“The show basically describes our common experience all growing up as tomboys, and some insight into surviving the world as people who don’t fit neatly into gender boxes,” says Coyote.

Next fall Coyote will be releasing a book also calledTomboy Survival Guide. This will be Coyote’s 12th book.

“I think books have the ability to go many places where I as the storyteller can’t or have not yet been,” Coyote says. “Books contain our collective history, and contain the histories that might not make it into our actual history books.”

Terrified of Helena’s frailties and insecurities, Maria is forced to grapple with stark similarities between her character and herself as she slips into the skin of this defeated woman.

Running lines with her young assistant, Valentine (played by Kristen Stewart), Maria yearns for the past, even as she experiences a strangely cathartic shift from the character of powerful, confident Sigrid to the fragile, victimized Helena.

The two women inject remarkable energy and nuance into the dialogue they’re rehearsing, creating a sometimes tense, yet subtly sexual, dynamic as they struggle to understand their characters and one another.

The Clouds of Sils Maria constantly blurs the lines between the film and the play within the

film. The actress-playing-an-actress device is a constant reminder that we are, in fact, watching a film, while also showing us how very much like a film (or a play) life can be.

lues band Black Iron Blossom came out of nowhere. I hadn’t even heard of them before the normally quiet Sam Gallagher stopped me in Mac’s Fireweed Books, told me he’s in a band and asked me to listen to their CD, called Full Moon Over Whitehorse.

What I heard completely floored me. With a raw and raunchy lap steel guitar and Gallagher’s deep bass vocals, the music is a mix of heavy roots and blues, with lyrics approaching a Nick Cave level of darkness.

Contrasting with Gallagher’s bass is Beth Chisholm’s smoky alto, vocally lighter but still edgy and raw. The two harmonize and trade lead vocal duties on the album.

The band came together in 2012 during a series of house jams hosted by Jim and Cath Welsh.

Gallagher, a guitar and slide player who took lessons from the late Whitehorse blues legend Aylie Sparks, met Chisholm four years ago, forming a band called The Ditch.

“We played covers,” Gallagher says, “a lot of Phish, Grateful Dead, a lot of 30-minute jams.”

Then came harmonica player Jean Langlois. Langlois had moved to Whitehorse in 2013 and traded in his piano for something more portable.

“That was my first winter project, learning harmonica,” he says.

Rounding out the band are Daniel Bouck on bass, Aubrey Sicotte on drums and Lara Lewis on piano.

Keitha Clark, a fiddler player known for the band Home From Home, plays as a guest on three songs.

Recorded largely in a cabin built by Sicotte, the album is produced by Jordy Walker.

“Walker is a musician, and he’s also a producer in the sense of being an extra set of ears in the room,” Langlois says. “A number of times, where we’d always played something a certain way, Jordy would say, ‘Have you ever album sounds natural and polished without losing any of the roughness of the band’s tone.

The title track , “Full Moon Over Whitehorse,” is a snapshot of the local music scene in the 2000s, including shout-outs to guitar, bass and drum stalwarts Aylie Sparks, Paul Stephens and Marc Paradis, and to the greatest blues venue Whitehorse has known, the Taku Arms.

Far removed from that song is “East Hastings,” a descent into substance abuse set in the seamier side of Vancouver.

The song “My Addiction,” with music and vocal by pianist Lara Lewis, turns from a simple love

song to something more ambiguous: “I want you like a miner wants a silver vein.”

Black Iron Blossom will have their CD release concert in Whitehorse at the Gold Pan Saloon, September 18 and 19, where they will also be performing new material, including songs written by the rest of the band. Outstanding tracks: Sad Train and Midnight.

Curing without killing

Deciphering the mixed messages on nitrites

N

itrates, nitrites, nitrous… makes me think of big industrial fertiliser companies, laughing gas, and that wheee sound the cars in videogames used to make when you gave them an extra burst of speed.

They also raise a flag as something to be consumed in moderation, or not at all, because of various reports over the years showing links between high consumption of processed meats containing nitrates, and cancer and other long term health problems. Of course, nothing is ever that simple, as I discovered when I began to research the issue .

A little background: Nitrates in the form of saltpeter have been used to preserve (cure) meats since at least 1700; it is transformed in food to nitrite, and these days industrially processed meats use synthetic nitrite, skipping this step. Organic standards (US and Canadian) forbid the use of synthetic nitrites and nitrates, but allow products with naturally high occurring levels of nitrates, such as celery juice, which is widely used in “nitrate-free” cured meats. Whether or not this lowers the health risk from nitrates/nitrites is still under debate – certainly the most obvious link is when cured meats containing nitrite are cooked at high heat, as this produces chemicals that are known carcinogens. This is mitigated by the addition of vitamin C and other compounds, (which are naturally-occurring in nitrate-containing veggies.

So far so good, but the jury is still out on whether the nitrite present in the organically-cured meats is safer. The meat industry is quick to point out that our bodies need nitrates, and that the levels allowed in cured meats are miniscule relative to, say, a stick of celery.

Then there are groups such as Dietitians of Canada, or the World

Cancer Research Fund, who both suggest limiting or avoiding processed meats because of the links between industrial nitrites and cancer.

By this point, I was beginning to lose my appetite, which was very healthy only a short while ago as I was pondering what to do with my pigs once they are done their current job of rooting up the garden. I had been thinking they would combine nicely with a neighbour’s moose in salami form. When I asked a friend whom I consider quite knowledgeable about all things meaty (he raises pigs and always brings the most meltingly delicious pork products to potlucks) he raised a finger in caution and said, “Remember, this is how you kill people.”

Then he proceeded to give me some tips and recipes that left me positively slavering – all of which did include nitrites.

I tend to err on the side of

homemade is healthier, which is by no means always true, but at least I know what I put in things.

It feels easy when I look at buying food, but as far as making it it feels like the option to gamble with immediate death by botulism or long-term suffering with cancer.

Using a celery concentrate and a starter culture as per organic practices feels like a bit of middle ground. Then there is the French chef in Devon, UK, who made a video about making salami. He said in his thick accent “We don’t use those nitrate things, if it goes off – f*** it, we toss it.”

Hmm. I shall leave you to ponder yet another meaty question, and in the meantime offer a recipe that I have used with no fatal results, sans saltpeter.

Moose Bresaola Bresaola is traditionally made from beef round, part of the upper hind leg – but it can also be made with moose. Bresaola is a good entry point to curing meat because there is no grinding or chopping, which increases surface area and thus the potential for contamination. I have used a variety of moose roasts with this recipe with good results. The spicing, as always, can vary according to local availability and preference.

INGREDIENTS 3lb moose roast 1 ¼ lb non-iodized salt 2T sugar ½ c red wine 4 cloves garlic, chopped Chili powder, black pepper and herbs, eg: thyme, rosemary, Labrador tea

• Tie everything together with string and let sit in the cure for one week, turning and coating once a day.

• Remove and wrap in several layers of cheesecloth.

• Tie up again and hang in a cool dry place for three weeks to a month until hard and dry.

• Store in a cool dry place and slice thinly into soups and place atop salads, omitting salt from your recipes.

WANTED Down South Yukon performers head to Victoria for 13th annual Breakout West music festival

ummer may be drawing to a close, but there is still a great music festival that you can catch. Taking place in Victoria, B.C., the Breakout West festival takes place Sept. 17-20.

The festival has been going for 13 years strong. It started as the Western Canadian Music Awards. Now the performances have broken away into the Breakout West, and the awards portion takes place on the last day of the music-filled weekend, as the Western Canadian Music Awards gala. This year’s event will feature more than 60 performers, nominated in such categories as best classical composition, country recording, jazz, and children’s recording.

Four years ago Whitehorse hosted the festival. This year six Yukon acts are representing: bilingual singer Claire Ness, female band Dana Jennejohn and The Bennett Sun, rock band The Midnight Sons, jazz artist Ryan McNally, folk singer Sarah MacDougall, and roots singer Kim Beggs.

This year Beggs was slotted in last minute, but in the past she has been nominated a total of six times, including for her most recent album, Beauty and Breaking.

“Attending the conference may be an opportunity to promote my upcoming record and meet with music supervisors about licensing my music into film and TV,” Beggs says.

Once Beggs returns from Breakout West, she will be focusing on a tour which will cover the Yukon, Alaska, Alberta, and Northwest Territories.

Her tour kicks off Oct. 9 at the Ice Palace. But the performing does not stop there. Nex she’ll be heading to Toronto to record a new album.

Music Yukon is supporting the performers attending the festival.

“We have obtained funding from the Yukon Film and Sound Commission to develop promotional materials for the artists, and to develop one live performance video for each performer,” says Kim Winnicky, the new executive director at Music Yukon.

Winnicky has been following Breakout West for many years and is thrilled

with the representation the Yukon has.

“Since the fist festival, the amount of Yukon performers have increased,” she says. “Six was the most we have ever sent, but we are very pleased with this years selection.”

Music Yukon strives to support Yukon artists who have a love for music and are trying to make a name for themselves. The organization is well equipped, but sometimes needs a little help from other organizations. “We are grateful for the support of the Yukon Film and Sound Commission and the Department of Economic Development,” Winnicky says.

This year Breakout West takes place in conjunction with the annual music festival in Victoria called Rifflandia. The main difference between the two festivals is that Rifflandia is for profit, whilere Breakout West performers do not get paid.

Despite not making any coin, performers at the Breakout West festival gain exposure and networking opportunities.

W

hen I move to the Yukon I begin fishing again for the first time since I was a girl. I buy a cheap rod and spend my time casting into whatever lake my friends are going to.

My first catch is a pike that makes me feel uneasy, yet empowered, as I learn to kill it and remove its guts. After a few more fish I begin to feel proud. I’ve finally taken on my responsibility as a meat eater.

I eagerly anticipate hunting season.

Soon I start spending a lot of time with a beautiful Buddhist man, and it is like a light turning on in a dark room. Slowly, but steadily, a strong meditation practice develops. Morning and night my legs are crossed and my mind is stilled. Answers to confusing existential questions I’ve always struggled with, like “what is the point of anything?” suddenly seem uncomplicated.

And the stark simplicity of the Buddhist value Do No Harm strikes me as clear as the unblinking eyes of those fish I killed.

When I repeatedly bludgeoned them over the head while their bodies twitched and tried to writhe from my grip, I certainly felt like I was harming them.

My interest in hunting evaporates. I shrug out of fishing plans.

And I find myself stricken with a moral dilemma: if I’m not willing to kill the meat I eat, am I comfortable allowing others to kill it for me?

To avoid hypocrisy I become a vegetarian.

I spend my winter learning all the different ways you can combine grains and legumes and vegetables and end up with different dishes. By spring I’ve developed a stomach ulcer and I’m craving every piece of meat I see.

Then I meet a man who lives in the woods and hunts for his year’s worth of meat and owns three guns, which he takes with him on casual walks in case he comes across something in season. The first time we speak on the phone he tells me he’s cooking ground squirrel, which he uses for target practice but, not wanting to be wasteful, makes sure to eat afterwards.

On our first date he cooks us steak. It’s the first red meat I’ve had in months, and I’m able to eat the whole thing without aggravating my ulcer. I feel great. I start spending as much time eating dinner with him as possible, enjoying the freedom of digestion I feel with the hamburgers and short ribs he prepares for me.

One day he suggests I try shoot-

Find us on facebook ing his gun. I agree, curious, wondering if my return to meat means I must again take responsibility for the animals whose bodies I use as sustenance.

After a short safety lesson we choose a fallen tree for me to shoot. I aim, mentally prepared with memories of firing plastic guns in arcades. I pull the trigger and without warning the gun kicks back, hard, like a foot to the shoulder, a threatening rip explodes in my ear, the creek shatters where my bullet hits it, missing the log.

I quickly hand the gun back, terrified.

In the following days a new certainty comes to me. I want to eat meat. And I don’t want to kill things. But here I am, spending time with a man who is respectful, thankful, spiritual about his process of taking the lives that feed him. He is happy to do so.

He is happy to be the one raising the bludgeon, aiming the gun. And he is happy to share the food he finds.

I am not a hunter. Not everyone has to be.

Phil’s Tire Tips

are you running all-season tires year round?

If so, you may be compromising your safety as well as those around you! Most all-season tires stop gripping normally at 5 degrees Celsius, whereas a designated winter tire continues to grip into the cold. Don’t let the term all-season fool you, these tires are designed for wet/dry traction and are not meant to operate in the winter.

If you are not sure if you have a winter or all-season tire you can look at the sidewall of your tire and try to find a pictograph which is the government designation for winter tires, these tires have passed the testing that is required to be classed as a winter tire!

This pictograph is a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake in the middle and is the only way a tire can be classed as winter.

Teach a City Girl to Fish

“Here,” I say, pointing to the place, just a little behind the fish’s head, “Put it there, fortyfive degrees. Do it quick.”

I can see her throat bob as

“Oh man,” she moans, “Oh man... oh man that’s hard.”

Tears are running down her cheeks. I go over to the truck and grab her a beer from the ice box, crack it, hold it out to her. The brown bottle is sweating in the heat.

She takes the beer with shaking hands.

I take the fish, put it on the Photo: Nancy Oakley fish chain, drop the chain in the cold water so the fish keeps. I take a beer myself and we sit amid the fireweed and yarrow and pass a smoke back and forth in silence for a while.

“It’s should be hard,” is the only thing I can think to say.

When the beers are emptied Marty stands up, wipes her gritty, blood-smeared hands on the back of her jeans, straightens her hair. I cast out again, watch my pixie dip and sway through the water.

Martha sits back down.

“I need a while,” she says. Her eyes are still red.

I nod at her.

“Don’t worry about it.” I say, “I cried the first time, too.”

In the pool, the fish churn about.

He’s a big boy. she swallows. I do her a solid and hold the fish straight. She puts the tip of the knife to the place I showed her, takes a deep breath and shoves it in. The fish stiffens, twitches, and goes still, the spinal nerve severed. Marty pulls the knife out and curses; she’s never killed anything before, or seen anything killed or thought about where her food comes from or what it means to have someone

arty is standing on the side of the Chilkat River, holding a ten-dollar fishing pole straight up, away from her body and waving it around with an alarmed air like the thing was covered in pig crap.

“Oh god... oh no... I have a bite!” She jerks the line to the left and then to the right, as if this will somehow solve the situation. Instead, the line strains and the rod bends down in the lovely parabolic arc which means fish fish fish.

“Yes,” I say, pulling in my own line, “you do.” I’m grinning and Marty is flipping her smoke back and forth from one side of her lip to the other with her tongue; a sure sign she’s nervous. This is her first time fishing. She’s a city girl, never been farther north than Thunder Bay, ON. It’s a Saturday and usually she’d be shopping or sitting on a sunny patio or getting ready to go out to a bar.

Inexplicably, we’re friends, which is what brings her to the Inside; she has come to visit me.

“Take it in a little,” I say, “but not too quick.” Below us, the pool teams with fish, their shadows sly shapes moving about beneath the glare of the sun on the clear water. I show her how to set her drag, watch the line loosen up.

“Give it a little play... let him get tired. He’s a big boy.” The line zigs and zags, the fish lunges above the water line, flashes silver, fat. Dolly. The beautiful cannible of the North. They follow the salmon around, their close cousins, and devour their eggs as they spawn. Marty is fishing with a little pink rooster tail spinner.

Salmon eggs are pink. The correlation is not accidental.

The distances between them closes slowly and then the fish is hauled in, momentarily suspended like a puppet on a string before Marty flops it down on the hardpacked dirt. It flails about instinctually, frantic and sad and lovely. I pounce on it and take it in my hand, the skin cool and slick, just to make it be still. I’ve got a knife in my pocket and with my free hand I pull it out, flick the blade open with my thumb. I hold it out to her.

“Do the thing.”

Marty looks sick. “Can’t you... can’t you do it? I don’t think I can do it.”

I shake my head. I’m a hard one, when I have to be. “You catch it, you kill it. Either throw it back or finish it – he can’t breathe, you know.”

Marty nods. Her mouth is pale under her lip gloss. She takes the knife.

’m not saying my daughter Emily is soft when it comes to roughing it. She just happened to have spent her first three and a half years living in the total comfort of a warm bed, running water, and the ability to flush her business down a toilet anytime she wants. That all changed last month when my wife Melinda and I took her on her first camping trip in the Kluane National Park area.

I should point out that this was actually a “glamping” (glamour camping) trip as we rented a private cabin near Kathleen Lake.

The cabin had no electricity or running water, but had an outhouse, propane lights and stove, a great fire pit with lots of wood to burn. It was a great start initiating Emily to the world of camping while at the same time not stripping her of all her creature comforts.

I could feel how excited she was when we got there. She happily fluttered around the property exploring woods, finding spiders, attempting to befriend squirrels and generally being one with nature. We had a great day of trekking around, gathering wood, and relaxing around the cabin before settling down outside at the fire pit where we ate and enjoyed the warmth of the fire roasting marshmallows.

Then out of the blue, after eating S’mores no less, Emily turns to Melinda and bluntly says, “I want to go to sleep now.”

After 6 hours of outdoor fun, Emily was camped out.Melinda and I were just getting started.

We washed her up the best we could, slapped on a warm nightie, and eased her into her comfy cabin bunk. With Emily down, Melinda and I let loose, cracking open our

For Yukon time... growlers and having crazy, wild games of Electronic Battleship, before turning in around midnight.

At exactly 6 a.m., I woke to a little girl poking me while whispering “pa pa, I have to go pee pee.”

I was so tired, for a second I thought about telling her to go find a pot or bowl, but no, I knew what I had to do. I had to take her to the outhouse. But as I cleared my head I realized, it was pouring rain outside.

We put on our shoes, stepped onto the porch, took a huge breath and made a mad dash toward our outdoor facility. The path was narrow as wet bushes and tree branches smacked against us, an extremely cool wake up call as Emily was still in her nightie and me in my underwear.

We made it to the outhouse and Emily went in to relieve herself.

Luckily there was a small covered porch for shelter. How she sat on that cold lid and never made a sound was beyond me. When she came out though, I could see she

We still had to go back, but this time we were ready for what nature was doling out. At that brief moment, we were no longer daddy and daughter but two human beings who were cold, wet, and desperate to get back in that warm cabin. With a nod we took off and, I swear for a brief moment, she turned into a little athlete as she hopped over stumps and dodged giant leaves of rain with the finesse and speed of cat, finally getting back inside and into our beds.

It was a fun trip and I think Emily grew a little on it. Her spirit was strengthened by nature and the cold Yukon rain. Perhaps one day she will realise that flushing and lights are convenient, but never as adventurous as the outhouse.

A Little Off the Top with Ken Bolton

Missing the Mark

T

he Code is clear: what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Ditto for jury rooms and papal conclaves. Double ditto for hunting trips.

But sometimes a story demands to override the Code.

There were four guys that September weekend on the Mayo River. Discretion suggests they remain unnamed.

The only one with actual moose-hunting experience, and a hard-earned intimacy with that frisky little waterway, was the Grumpy Guru. (Oops, I just outed myself.)

I shared the lead canoe with the Cowboy, a sturdy 30-something who loved guns and had a minor taste for mayhem.

In the bow of the second canoe sat the Engineer, a man so precise in everything that four years later, he can still probably recite the exact co-ordinates of where said mayhem occurred.

At his back was the guy I call the Happy Camper.

Oh, hell, what do I have to lose? It was Mark Beese.

At the crack of about 10:30, we set out not far below the dam that keeps Mayo Lake from making a real nuisance of itself. On a good day, a six-hour run will deposit you beside Ralph and Norma Mease’s farm at Minto Bridge.

As hunters, we naturally expected to dine on backstrap and moose kidney before calling it a night partway downstream.

We dipsied. We doodled. We skirted sweepers like seasoned voyageurs.

Occasionally, we stopped to answer a call of nature, or make some calls of our own. We grunted. We moaned. We stroked bushes with our paddles.

Some guys just shouldn’t be in the woods without a minder

Inevitably, no answer came.

“Where’s the Mayo River meat locker of yore?” the Guru grumped.

With enough good light left to finish the run, if necessary, we pulled up for a final look-around.

“You know what he’s like. Give it another 15 minutes,” the Cowboy said.

For the next hour, we debated possibilities and probabilities: disorientation, injury, exhaustion, moose fever, an actual moose. Oh God, don’t let it be a bear.

We swapped theories about each possibility. He’s not dressed

for rain. But he’s fit. He has no flashlight. Or matches. Or a GPS. But he’s too smart to go thrashing around in the dark. He’ll wait till morning and get his bearings.

As we picked at our meal, the conversation veered from sombre to outright bizarre.

How do we get word to the RCMP? Who’s going to tell Tammy? It has to be Cowboy; he’s family. Not me.

Losing your boss’s husband in the woods is a really dumb career move.

What if he broke a leg?

Or fell in the river? Can he swim? How soon does hypothermia set in? Do grizzlies really start with the head?

And bury their victims for later? Does search and rescue have heat-seeking equipment up here?

The madness continued until we finally dozed off.

Early next morning, I paddled solo through a cold mist, steeling myself for that call to the RCMP. From a couple of miles out, where the river gets flat and lazy, I could barely see Mark’s SUV, where we had left it ready to convey the canoes back to our RV at the head the river.

It took another 15 minutes before the white patch above the roof line revealed itself as a canoe paddle. As I neared the shore, a door opened and out stepped that Happy Camper grin, fresh with sleep.

How do you tell a guy you’re so happy to see him you’d just like to deck him?

I’d say more, but the Code, eh?

What happens on the Mayo River stays on the Mayo River.
