uala Kennedy and Eamon O’Leary grew up just an hour’s distance from each other - she in Dundalk, on the east coast of Ireland, he in the capital city, Dublin.

But despite their shared passion for singing and playing traditional Irish music, their paths didn’t actually cross until they were both doing session work in New York City “many, many moons ago,” Kennedy says.

They started doing “bits of touring here and there” about five years ago.

They’ve ratcheted up the pace in the past three years, touring extensively in North America and Ireland, including a recent three-week tour of Newfoundland.

“A lot of people there are descendants from Irish settlers, and we certainly felt welcomed by the people there,” she says. “And we were just mesmerized by the west coast, and the Gros Morne National Park. It was just fantastic.”

With the portability of being an acoustic duo, Kennedy and O’Leary can do what they most enjoy on the road – explore new places and try new things.

“If you look at our tour schedule for the past while, you can probably tell that we are interested in going to slightly more unusual places than the normal tour circuit.”

Their latest venture is a house concert tour of the Yukon and Atlin, B.C., beginning in Whitehorse on Thursday, September 17 and ending in Old Crow on Sunday, September 27.

“The Yukon was certainly high on my list for a number of years.

I’m glad it’s finally happening, and I’ll get to experience some of it and meet some people,” she says. “That’s the wonderful thing about doing house concerts. You really get to connect with different communities.”

Most of the duo’s fare consists of traditional ballads passed down through the years, which they have adapted from old manuscripts or learned first-hand from older musicians.

T

he North Klondyke Highway Music Society is doing a happy dance.

The Canadian charity MusiCounts recently delivered the good news - the North Klondyke Highway Music Society is one of 19 programs selected from among 100 applicants across Canada to receive funding from the 2015 MusiCounts TD Community Music Program.

The society will be receiving $15,000 out of a total of $250,000, donated by the TD Bank Group in order to help rural, remote communities that are under-serviced in music education.

Peter Menzies, president of the society was “blown away” that this has all worked out.

“This is the first time we’ve gone to a foundation for funding,” he says. “I thought it was a crap-shoot at best.”

A musician himself, Menzies helped start the society while teaching in Carmacks 10 years ago. He saw that there was little music education in rural community schools, so he decided to start a program emphasizing music writing, guitar and harmonica in Carmacks, Mayo, Pelly Crossing and Dawson City.

The name came from all four towns being situated along the North Klondike highway.

“We’re about music production and presentation in rural Yukon,” he says.

Two years later, the society recorded a CD called “Learn by Heart - Songs from the North Klon-

A memorial to the Saint of Dawson T

here is a campaign under way to have Father William H. Judge, S.J., declared a saint by the Vatican and named the Patron Saint of Miners.

In the meantime, Father Judge, often referred to as the Saint of Dawson, will have to make do with the memorial plaque mounted on a massive rock outside the new Dawson Community Hospital and Health Care Centre.

Many Dawsonites would like to have had the new hospital named after him, but didn’t get their wish.

Facilities Manager Vivian Painter, in collaboration with St. Mary’s Catholic Church, is doing her best to link the hospital to Judge’s legacy.

Judge arrived in Dawson from Fort Mile, having already been in the North for some years, predicting that the Klondike Gold Rush would be an opportunity for witness and service.

In 1897, he opened St. Mary’s Hospital just below the Moosehide Slide, near the place where his grave marker lies today.

The original building was smaller than the large structure that was finally completed in 1906, after his death in 1899, but he began the tradition of health care in the Klondike. That tradition later carried on by the Sisters of St. Anne.

When the hospital burned in 1950, health care continued in the former Yukon Courthouse and in the Commissioner’s Residence. A federally-funded cottage hospital, originally named for Judge, was built in the 1960s.

After health care responsibilities were passed to the Yukon government, the building underwent a number of name and status changes, eventually being identified as a nursing station.

Painter, who worked at that building 35 years ago, recalls passing by that rock and plaque.

Hired in the fall of 2013 to manage the new building, she determined to have them relocated to a prominent spot by the entrance to the impressively-upgraded facility when the old nursing station was demolished to make way for the construction of the new seniors’ care facility.

YuKonstruct hacks its way to the top

Y

uKonstruct’s computer lab is electric with creativity and camaraderie.

Okay, it usually is, but more so tonight. It is six days from the deadline of the Hackathon, a contest from www.instructables.com, which is an online community of people making stuff and sharing their creations.

If the members of YuKonstruct win, they will collect the prizes that include a 3D printer, laser printer, welder and more. That’s $30,000 of prizes.

But, what the heck is a “Hackathon”?

“Just see Allison,” I am told.

“She’s back there somewhere.”

But I am stopped by a welcoming smile from Amy Law. You can just tell that she is jazzed.

“Right now I’m working on an instructable on how to thread an industrial sewing machine,” she says. “We are in a contest with other Makerspaces, so anybody who is a member here can post anything they make on www.instructables.com.

“I made this little jewelry box and took pictures along the way of how I did it, wrote out how I did it and posted it to the website.”

Law has done 17 of these, so far, and could have done more if she weren’t helping others with their projects.

“It’s collaborative,” she says with a shrug. She explains that she works for the Yukon government and YuKonstruct is her “creative thing.”

So, will YuKonstruct win the international contest?

“Yes!” says Law, with a laugh that is tinged with playful reproach.

Seann Springford enjoyed the stupid question, too.

“When you consider we are a group of 72 individuals drawing from a base of 30,000, and we are at best overall for submissions, and the next-placed city draws on a population base of quite a few million, in my opinion that makes us winners right off the top,” Springford says.

Springford has posted three instructables so far and has two others in draft form. He is here tonight to get Law’s help with writing up the step-by-step instructions for the photos he has taken already.

“She has a better skill with words than I do,” he says.

Clearly, his genius is reserved for the creation he is holding in his hand. It is a “Trapped Cube,” a hollowed-out wooden box with large holes on each side displaying a wooden cube – that is too large to fit through any of the holes.

How did you get it in there?

“You have to read the instructable,” he says good-naturedly.

Springford enjoys the moment for just a bit, then he obliges: “Take the cube, mark the centre on each side, then you go around and start to drill down into each cube and slowly go around the cube and then you end up with that. Super simple.”

Uh, huh. Hold it, what?

“It is like anything, once you understand it, it becomes super simple and it is fun,” Springford says. “It took me 15 minutes. It is fun to hand it to someone and say, ‘Figure that out.’”

Yeah, but 400 years ago, this would have gotten Springford burned at the stake.

“Probably, most of the things in here were high-level magic 400 years ago,” he agrees. “This is probably the greatest concentration of creativity I have ever been around. It is phenomenal the different minds and the way they work and the things they come up with.”

There is a voice approaching slowly.

“Patch?

“Do you have a patch?

“Do you want a patch?

“I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Allison.”

Springford completes the introductions: “This is Allison, she is the driving force behind instructables.

“I’m the team captain for this contest,” Allison Button says.

“That means I am the one who is harassing everyone and rounding

She is also in charge of strategy. Button explains that, as of one week out, YuKonstruct had 108 submissions to www.instructables. com. And, in a lowered voice, she admits to having a cache of even more to submit at the last minute.

“We got blindsided by Coventry Makers,” she says. “They jumped into the competition with 52 instructables all at once.”

Tonight, it is a full court press.

“This is like a barn raising,” says Button. “We get together and get a lot of work done. All of our computers up and running with nine computers and high-speed Internet and we are providing the instructable app so they can use their smartphones or tablets. And there is a photo studio with a light tent and some very talented photographers, here, if anyone needs help to make their pictures look good.”

But this is a Hackathon. Are America’s nuclear codes safe from a security breach tonight from this gang?

“No, we are not hacking into computers,” says Button. “It is like ‘life hacks’. You know, tweaking and changing or making. A hackathon is an event where we make things.”

So, the contest has to come to an end but, alas, a winner wasn’t named before press time.

“The 258 instructables we entered in the contest are a fantastic record of our members’ talents,” says Button by email. “And also wonderful examples of what Yukoners can learn to make at YuKonstruct.”

• Get back to work. Upon your formal retirement, you may decide to do some consulting or open a small business.

Any wages you receive can greatly improve your retirement income picture.

As you can see, your retirement goals will be closely tied to your finances. So think carefully about what you’d like to do when you retire — and connect these objectives to the money you’ll spend and the money you may earn. By being aware of both your dreams and your “bottom line,” you should be able to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned.

When you also look at all the processed foods, unhealthy fats, sugar and unpronounceable ingredients you’ll ditch with the restaurant food, it’s an easy choice.

You might argue that dreaming up, planning, and cooking three meals a day, 21 a week, 1,095 a year is daunting. Don’t worry – with the right tools at your disposal, it can be a cinch.

Not only will these tips help you save time and make healthier choices in the kitchen, but they’ll also take the daily chore out of eating.

Prep your veggies once a week Maybe it’s when you get home from shopping, or maybe it’s one evening a week, but set aside an hour to prep your veggies for the week. Put a movie on Netflix, grab your cutting board and clean veggies, and slice and dice away.

Having chopped vegetables at your disposal makes it easy to throw them into salads, stir-fries, soups, and pasta dishes. It also makes it more likely that you’ll reach for carrots and snow peas when you’re looking for a snack, instead of the chips.

Make a batch of staple ingredients The thing about whole grains and legumes is that because they’re not processed, they take a while to cook. So, make a batch of your staple grains and beans and keep

two to three days worth in your fridge.

Store the rest in small batches in the freezer so you can easily pull them out in the morning for dinner.

Have a (flexible) schedule There’s a reason every nutritionist recommends meal plans.

They take the daily guesswork out of eating and they are a surefire way to make sure you have all the ingredients you need for the week.

However, like many a best laid plan, they can be tricky to follow when it comes down to it.

If you find your meal plan quickly

becoming just another to do list you aren’t following, try instead for a flexible combo plan.

Create a short list of different ingredients that you can combine together to form meals.

For example, you might have

Make breakfast a breeze Smoothies can be a great morning meal when they have the right mix of ingredients – fruit, greens, protein, and fibre.

But in the rush of the early hour, sometimes we end up with little more than a banana and milk, which will have our stomachs rumbling well before noon.

To make it even simpler, keep a store of smoothie bags in your freezer. In a reusable, re-sealable container or bag, portion out all the solid ingredients for a smoothie.

In the morning, pop the frozen ingredients into the blender with milk or almond milk, blend and you’re ready to go!

Pack lunch the night before This one little trick will save you time and that $3,650 a year in little more than 20 minutes a night.

It’s so easy that we often forget to do it and are left without time in the busy mornings.

Whether you’re packing up leftovers, or throwing together a combo of your prepped ingredients, take the time to do it before bed.

And that is exactly what it is… and much more.

It is the final piece of the logistical puzzle that brings locally produced and organic produce to a demanding consumer in the most efficient way.

“We have a priority list,” says Rudge. “As local as possible and as organic as possible.”

Yukon produce may not be certified organic, but they know who the farmers are and they know their philosophy and practice.

The new grocery store,located at 21 Waterfront Place, which is at located atlocationwas borne of the age-old need to bring many products under one roof.

Yukoners needed to know someone who had farm-fresh eggs and they would drive for 20 minutes to get them. Then, they needed to know who to buy tomatoes from.

And so on.

Co-owner Robert Ryan has a background in the military and, later, setting up logistics for businesses in countries recently ravaged by war.

Moving to the Yukon, he and his wife, Victoria, wanted their children to know where their food came from. So, they started a small farm… and it grew.

The Agriculture Branch introduced them to Rudge and her husband, Tom, who are well-experienced, well-respected and well-liked in the Yukon farming community.

They became friends and now partners.

Robert Ryan, of Ibex Valley Farms, was formed last December; they bought the building in January; wood was purchased from Dawson City and it was left to dry until March; construction; and the soft opening was held in late August.

A baker has been hired, so the bakery will open next to serve up breads and pies and such.

There have been talks with a butcher, so the meat shop may happen soon.

A kitchen for prepared foods will be next to give patrons something to nibble on for lunch or a snack in the “tea barn”.

It was hoped that eggs would be on the shelf by opening day, but the federal inspector is overdue.

So, for now, eggs will be sold by farm gate rules, which means they cannot be displayed and can only be sold for personal consumption.

Even when all of the moving parts are working, Rudge says the public should expect empty shelves from time to time.

“That is the nature of farming,” she explains. “That is the nature of feeding ourselves. Local product really has a season.

“People raise chickens and start in the spring and butcher them in July and August. And that is when chicken is available. Anytime after that, it will be frozen.

“Most Yukoners know that you only have fresh moose a week after it is hung. After that, you have frozen moose.”

or some reason I just can’t seem to stay away from the Gurkhas. When I first started enjoying cigars about 8 years ago, Romeo y Julieta was my starter brand. Over the years my curiosities swayed between different brands. But this past summer, Gurkha has held my constant attention. This is probably because there are many different kinds, each with their own creative names. Of course the cigars are really good too.

Today I will be taking an inside look at Gurkha Shaggy. When I first came across this cigar I thought, ‘What?... What the heck do they mean by shaggy?’

Once again Gurkha has scored in the creative department.

Shaggy at a first glance looks like many other Gurkhas. When you go in for a closer look, you will notice that the bottom inch of the cigar is missing the binder wrapper. Strange… but in Gurkha’s case, quite relevant. The train of thought, is to make the bottom of this cigar look like a shaggy tassel. Others may say it is supposed to resemble a shaggy footstool, but I stand by my opinion and say tassel.

The next question that enters my mind, is how will that un-bound portion of the cigar taste? Up until now I have never come across such a thing. I am very eager to try this. The tobacco used to fill and bind the cigar is Dominican. That tells me that this cigar will be on the medium flavour spectrum.

To go with Shaggy, I have decide to have a large mug of coffee. My brew of choice: Starbucks Reserve-

A Gurkha “Shaggy” Preanger. The reserve Starbucks blends are fairly new on the market. The coffee beans are sourced from remote locations across the globe. In my case Preanger was found high in the hills of the Sudan, and means abode of the gods. This coffee has a smooth silk taste with hints of chocolate. I think it will go quite well with Shaggy.

I light my match and get

Shaggy started. The first puffs have a smoky, floral taste. It’s quite pleasant, not too strong. As I ease into the middle of the “shag,” the flavour palate picks up some chicory and coffee. Once I go into the bound part of the cigar, the flavour picks up some chocolate, leather, and cedar. My coffee sits very well with this flavour palate. The smooth texture

balances well with the different flavours of Shaggy.

The last third of the cigar becomes a bit more bold, with tastes of coffee, spice and bitters.

However, it is still enjoyable. The duration of this cigar is about an hour and a half – and I enjoyed each minute. I would say this cigar is for those who enjoy a steady, medium bodied cigar.

Salt of the Earth plays Sept 20

S

ince being presented the Palme D’Or and Best Director credits at the Cannes Film Festival for Paris, Texas (1984) and Wings of Desire (1987) respectively, German filmmaker Wim Wenders continues to be intrigued by the human condition. Wenders’ more recent films Buena Vista Social Club (1999) and Pina (2011) are examples of his continuing ability to show us the beauty of the human spirit.

In his 2014 documentary filmHis newest film, calledThe Salt of the Earth, Wenders,focuses his camera on Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado.

After abandoning a promising career in economics in 1973, Salgado decided to devote his life to photography. Travelling to more than 100 countries, Salgado embarked on what he describes as social projects. The two- to seven-year-long projects documented some of the world’s most remote sites of poverty, genocide, environmental catastrophes and forgotten cultures.

During these projects Salgado would completely submerge him-

self into the lives of those at the bottom of mine pits; those devastated by oil field explosions; and those fighting for their lives.

Salgado’s son, Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, worked with Wim Wenders on the documentary about his father, offering insight into the renowned photographer,

The harvest has been crazy this year. Everyone is saying so.

Everything is two weeks early. I almost missed the spruce tips— they were ready in mid-May, when I was away. I just managed to get four cups at the very end of the season. The high-bush cranberries were ripe in Dawson on the first weekend in August, and people were picking blueberries and huckleberries in Fraser, BC, the weekend after that. Some folks have already made their first foray into the woods for low-bush.

I got a call from a friend this morning who wants to borrow my steam juicer. She has already picked a bucket of crabapples from our neighbours’ tree in downtown Whitehorse. It’s too soon! I’m not ready! Normally our neighbours deliver a portion of their harvest to my house in late September and I make up batches of jelly,sauce and apple vodka. I don’t have time to process anything this week. Yikes.

In downtown Whitehorse the leaves are still on the trees and many of them are green. This morning I talked to my sister, who lives in Parksville, BC, but used to live here, and she said that in 1992, the snow fell on September 13 while the leaves were still on the trees and that was it. Winter.

I was in Haines for the whole of last weekend, cooking for a fundraiser for the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center. It rained there as it did in Whitehorse. We went to Haines in early fall and came back three days later in early winter.

On the drive home, as we looked out at the snow creeping down the mountains, down below the treeline and then finally, down into the forest beside the road, a strange feeling grew in my chest.

Oh yes. Winter. I have to don my winter self. But please, not yet.

I haven’t even been out for lowbush cranberries.

Crabapple vodka: a quick way to deal with the early harvest.

The same thing was happening in Haines. Helen Alten, the director of the Sheldon Museum, called me in early August to say the apples were falling off the tree in front of the museum. The tree is 90 years old, the first apple tree planted in Haines, and its fruit was intended to be a key ingredient in a braise for the 60 pounds of elk ribs I was bringing down for the dinner.

So Helen got busy. She made applesauce and froze it. She put apples through the juicer and froze the juice. And still the apples rained down. On the weekend, my fellow cook and I arrived to a fridge full of apples at the Senior’s Centre, where we’d be cooking. The next day a volunteer appeared with another 40 pounds.

We boiled apples, strained them and collected the juice.

We braised the elk in beef broth and apple juice with some juniper berries, spruce tips and other northern herbs. We made a barbecue sauce with applesauce, birch syrup, hot peppers and garlic.

And we stirred in some Calvados, the apple cognac from Normandy, land of apples. The sauce was awesome.

In the kitchen that day, someone said wouldn’t it be great if we had a cider press and could put it to work here and now. Oh, wouldn’t it! But even without cider, there’s a lot you can do with home-processed apples. At Port Chilkoot Distillery in Haines they were serving crabapple-tinis on the weekend, and a Manhattan made with their own bourbon (a fantastic product), sweet vermouth, local apple bitters and a local cherry for garnish.

There are folks in Whitehorse who make apple cider every year.

So far I haven’t heard of anyone making apple cognac. But we have two great local vodkas, and we have a lot of crabapples ripening early this year. So I’m going to make some apple vodka; it’s fast and easy and all I have time for.

You can too. All you do is wash the apples, stem them, cut them in half, pack them into a one-litre jar and pour vodka over top. Store in a dark place for three months, strain and serve.

Now get out and harvest. The snow is halfway down Grey Mountain.

chance meeting a long time ago started a friendship and a quilting group that has been meeting now for three decades.

As it happened, Yukoners Dorothy Smith and Karen McIver enrolled in an embroidery class at the public library in the early 1980’s. Upon leaving they began to chat. The course was great, but what Dorothy and Karen really wanted to was quilt.

Dorothy had a pattern with her from Chatelaine magazine – Flowers of Canada. She loaned the pattern to a grateful Karen.

The quilting group started soon after and is still meeting on Wednesdays so many years later.

Quilting, which is the stitching together of layers of padding and fabric, may date back to ancient Egypt. Quilting was likely intro-

duced to Europe by Crusaders.

The “Tristan quilt” made circa 1360 is the earliest work existing today.

While Karen McIver, an RCMP wife, eventually left the territory, Dorothy Smith, now 95 years old, is still here.

After all, Dorothy Smith is a northern woman. She was born in Atlin on March 9, 1920. Her birth mother passed away from flu shortly after giving birth.

She was adopted as a newborn by the Matson family. Dorothy grew up along the creek in Atlin, living there until she was 22 years old.

While the family did have a house in Atlin, I believe Dorothy’s love of work and keeping busy would have been nurtured on the creek.

Her dad was a miner, and over the winter months he often cut

and hauled wood – two cords a day, earning $4.50 for his work.

Dorothy’s adoptive mother came from Sweden at the age of 16. She settled in Seattle and began training in a bakery. She met her husband a few years later and they came to Atlin in 1916. The Matson property just recently sold in Atlin.

While Dorothy’s mother knew how to knit, embroider and crochet, she did not teach Dorothy these skills. Dorothy, as a young wife and mother, took an interest in hand work when she moved to Whitehorse with her husband Jim, and learned learned Hardanger embroidery from her sister in law She loved Hardanger and Brazilian embroidery in addition to quilting, and passed on this love of craft to daughter Marilyn. Dorothy’s son Eric has a

few of his mom’s most treasured pieces of this beautiful craft.

I especially love Hardanger embroidery, which is thought to have its beginnings in Persia and Asia. During the Renaissance this early form of embroidery spread to Italy. By 1700, variations had spread to northern Europe. From 1650 to 1850 Hardangersom, meaning work from the Hardanger area, flourished in Norway.

Originally, flax was grown and woven into fabric. Cotton material is used today. Norwegian traditional costumes often highlight the stitchery.

Patience is a most important quality, as Hardanger involves counting threads on even weave cotton. If you make a mistake, Dorothy quips, it is virtually impossible to find and correct.

I recently enjoyed an afternoon visit with Dorothy.

“My eyes are still good,” she tells me. When not quilting, she is knitting socks. The self-striping sock yarn is so much fun to work up.

Dorothy still attends the quilting group. Her work is exquisite – with meticulous stitches and attention to detail. She recently donated a quilt to the Chemotherapy ward at Whitehorse General Hospital. We both agreed that the best things in life are made by hands.

Yukoner Marcelle Dube publishes her first short story collection

Whitehorse fiction writer Marcelle Dubé is offering her new collection of short stories, called Night Shift, as an e-book for free until the end of October.

I

t’s a dark and rainy night when Kate Williams finds an injured stranger on the highway. She pulls over to help him, not knowing that she will be soon in danger.

That’s how Marcelle Dubé’s short story Night Shift starts. It’s the title story in Dubé’s recently published collection of short stories (Falcon Ridge Publishing).

Readers who are familiar with her books may know the character Chief of Police Kate Williams well.

Dubé has written four novels and three short stories in the mystery series about her.

“I just finished a draft of a short story in the Mendenhall-series,” she says. “My Mendenhall is a fictitious town between Winnipeg and Brandon, in Manitoba. Kate, the 50-something female chief of police, has to contend with a resentful police force when she first comes on board (The Shoeless Kid is the first in the series), but she’s stubborn and determined and won’t let anything keep her from doing her job.”

Dubé has published ten novels,

but this is her first short story collection.

“I always have a short story or two on the go,”Dubé says.

“I’m hoping to collect previously published stories along various genres. For instance, the next collection will probably consist of fantasy short stories, followed by a science fiction collection.”

The stories in Night Shift are suspenseful with main characters who are tough.

The character Jules, for example, had an accident at Miles Canyon and can’t remember what happened after waking up in the hospital.

“I like spending time with characters in interesting settings,” Dubé says. “I am definitely more of a novelist than a short story writer. Writing a novel feels like settling down to a full meal, as opposed to the light snack of a short story. It may be a disservice to the short story, because a wellwritten short story packs a wallop in very few words. Not an easy feat.”

Dubé writes mainly mystery, fantasy and science-fiction, but readers can find hints of love in the stories, for example in Jules, where the main character develops a relationship with Peter, her nurse.

“The focus of the books is always on the investigations, but the relationships of the various characters wind their way through the stories, and apparently into readers’ hearts,” she says.

On the request of her readers, Dubé plans to write another Mendenhall mystery-novel about Chief of Police Kate Williams.

“Over the course of the series, through various investigations, Kate and Bert come to love each other, but by the end of the last book, they are in trouble,” she says.

For Dubé, writing is also a little nerve-wracking.

“I don’t know where I’m going until I get there,” she says.

“And very often, in my mysteries, I won’t know who the ‘bad guy’ is until I’m close to the end. It keeps the story interesting for me since I don’t know what’s going to happen next.”

It also makes it interesting for the reader to explore her stories.

Jules is the only story in the collection that is set in the Yukon.

But the territory inspires Dubé “Even when the story isn’t set in the Yukon, the Yukon permeates the setting,” she says. “I can’t help it — this place is in my blood.”

Chainsaw-chip Fire Starter

W

e get pretty good at fire-starting if we light enough fires, but there are some ways to make it even easier. Solid-fuel fire-starters work well but kerosene-dampened chainsaw chips are always successful at minimal cost.

If you cut your own firewood, you can gather the chips around your saw-buck. If that isn’t possible, everyone has a friend who cuts wood and you can get chips there. Just scoop them up with a small shovel or dust-pan and put them in a bucket.

They are often wet, or at least damp, but will dry out in a mesh bag (laundry type or even an onion bag) left hanging in the garage or shed for a week or two.

There are often piles of larger chips left along the road allowance when a tree crew does clearing for power lines, or just clears along the highway. These are chunkier than chainsaw chips, but will work well when dried.

Gather some large-size coffee cans with the plastic lids and fill them with the dry chips. Clear plastic peanut butter jars also work well, as the lids on either choice seal well enough to prevent the kerosene from evaporat-

Remove the lids and pour in a moderate amount of kerosene (NEVER gasoline). The amount varies with the size of the container, but a cup is probably adequate for the large coffee cans.

The sealed kerosene/chip containers can be stored in an outdoor shed, with only the one currently in use inside the building where the stove is located.

To get a fire started outside, or in a stove, use a cupful or so of the chips on and under the kindling and drop or hold a lighted match up to it.

It will burn for 8-10 minutes and will usually get the fire going unless the kindling is wet. In that case, use more of the chip,s as the longer initial burn will get damp or wet wood going more easily. Add larger wood pieces as the kindling burns.

and in extreme (emergency) situations this fire-lighting method can be a life-saver.

Duct-tape a waterproof match container or BIC lighter to the outside of the jar, so everything you need is all together.

Gasoline should never be used on the chips, as gas vaporizes more readily and causes a large, dangerous flash when lit.

Kerosene can also vaporize if you’ve tried unsuccessfully to get a fire going and the kindling, et cetera is still hot. The result in that situation is similar to using gasoline, so it is important to be very careful.

It can also be dangerous to add more kerosene soaked chips to a fire that isn’t flaming as well as you’d like it to be. Use enough chips at the start and you won’t have that problem.

A

tlin Mountain might have lost some of its white stripes, but Atlin itself is still as much fun as ever - all inhabitants 100 per cent colourful, all sights 100 per cent amazing.

Sometimes, on a long weekend, the girl gang and I drive down on a Saturday morning, spend the night and drive back Sunday evening.

We go with the flow, but our weekends are packed to the brim with activities. There are endless possibilities and we have not yet exhausted the supply.

In 1985-86, I lived in Atlin for a year. Hence, I notice how the mountain has changed in response to climate change.

We also have friends in Atlin, and one of them was our personal guide for the weekend.

He is one of the plentiful, often single, men in town. You can usually find him among the others at the wisdom table in the Pine Tree Restaurant (the food is excellent, by the way).

Don’t forget to check before-

hand if there is something organized going on in town when you plan to go. We always forget to do this, and once missed the Tarahne Tea because we didn’t know it was on.

The last time we went, we could have attended a glacial talk given by summer students.

One weekend in May, we did take in the opening of the bar after the winter season, with live music. This event might not have been advertised, but the residents know about these things and the dance floor was full all evening.

In terms of geography, Atlin is famous for Atlin Lake and Atlin Mountain. As far as its history, the gold rush in 1898, the Tlingit people, contemporary mining and art are all important.

You may also know that there are plenty of possibilities in and around Atlin for more extreme adventures.

Over the years, we have walked along the shoreline of Atlin Lake, peeked into old cabins, hiked Mon-

arch Mountain, visited Frog Rock, bathed in the Warm Springs, entered the Grotto, walked around Pine Creek Falls and Discovery, and swum in Surprise Lake.

In other words, we have enjoyed the better-known sights.

Not everything is clearly marked, so one needs a bit of exploring skills to find it all.

What is quite well marked, when you know how to find Boulder Creek, is the Boulder Creek Dam. Have you ever heard of it? I hadn’t. It’s awesome; quite a feat of engineering, built at the turn of the previous century.

I did know Ruby Mountain, and climbed it recently with Nancy Ohm. Our other friend, Fabiola Roy, who understands the importance of a hike, turned left onto Surprise Lake Road on the way into town and dropped us off before connecting with our personal ‘Randy’s Ravenous Adventures’ guide.

After she left us where the rockslide meets the road, we followed a ridge of cinder cone on the south side of the rockslide.

I am trying to use the correct geological terminology, having read - with difficulty - three scholarly articles on the subject. Yes, Ruby Mountain is a cinder cone in the Atlin Volcanic Field, in the Surprise Lake area.

Geologically speaking, the eruptions were quite recent, events from the Quaternary period, circa 540,000-200,000 years ago.

We climbed up a steep slope made up of small red rocks called tephra, described by Edwards et al in 1996 as brown-red pyroclastic deposits of bombs and scoriaceous lapilli. (Lapilli are the small pieces, scoria the rocks that have air pockets in them, tephra or pyroclast the general name of material the volcano spits out.)

After gloriously enjoying 360 degrees of view, we walked back through the crater, which is covered with periglacial frost polygons. The crater felt hollow.

My neighbour, who happens to be a former geology professor, told me later that, just as the individual pieces of tephra have air pockets, so could there be air pockets among the tephra in the vent, and to be careful.

I asked him why some of the rock is red and some is black. It all has to do with the oxidation of the iron in the rock, which could have happened at the event but also through weather-

hung ominously above us, but was offset by the joy of looking into a real crater when we reached the top. I’ve never been to Hawaii, so this was as real as it gets.

According to the articles, Ruby Mountain has similarities to Hawaiian volcanoes. The rocks at Ruby are alkaline basalt, hawaiite and possibly basanite.

We followed the rim clockwise to the highest point of the mountain where, from the very top, we could see Atlin Mountain to the east. From this vantage point, it looked quite small. We could also see Atlin Lake, Teresa Island and, farther south, the

Indeed, when I split pieces of red scoria with my rock hammer, most were darker inside.

On the way back, we realized that climbing down was much faster than climbing up, and that we would be too early for our pick-up.

We saw an interesting outcrop in the rockslide and aimed for it, following animal trails on the loose tephra side hill. Lo and behold, Nancy spotted a caribou between the hummocky mounds of tephra below.

As we retreated to the safety of the rock outcrop to watch, the caribou also seemed to be checking us out.

We pretended to be female caribou, since we hadn’t had much luck with some human males we had encountered earlier.

We had tried to impress them by pretending to be foreigners collecting xenoliths, foreign rock embedded in the pyroclast. They weren’t impressed.

And probably for the benefit of our wellbeing, neither was the caribou.
