he snow has come and gone… and come and gone again… but the heavy mist on the hillsides around the town – mists that last well past the morning and into the afternoon – tell their own story of seasonal change. Winter, as they say in Westeros, is coming. Indeed, a lot of us wish that the ground would hurry up and freeze and that we would come to the end of the season that leaves mud splatter on the legs of our pants and across the floors of our homes. The ground will be white again by Hallowe’en, of course. It’s a rare year that doesn’t see the kids going door to door with their costumes over their winter gear. Those who think that the Klondike is just a sleepy little place between the end of September when the tourists stop coming and the arrival of the mushers for the Yukon Quest in early February would be mistaken. Earlier this month the Robert Service School’s Ancillary Room was the sight of much activity as the town’s Recreation Department sponsored its Clubs and Information registration evening. Both the EMS Ambulance crew and the Klondike Sun were hoping to recruit new people.

The Rec. Department itself was offering a whole batch of winter activities for young and old. Youth were invited to participate in jigging, Outdoor Club, Cooking Monsters, Girl Power, Cheer (tumbling and acrobatics), gymnastics, crafts and skating. The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Youth Centre was also offering a variety of programs. Families were encouraged to try badminton, soccer, basketball and/or volleyball. We were notified that the Fitness Centre on Front Street has taken over the former office of the Klondike Sun, and that it has expanded its operations since the Rec. offices were moved to the second floor there. Ramp access is being constructed at the north end of the building and new facilities are being worked on inside. For those wanting more exercise, circuit training, Zumba, athletic conditioning and yoga are available at various sites around the town. Outdoor activities were a draw at the info night, with skis and snowshoes on display. It’ll be awhile before there’s enough cover for snow machines to get going, but it won’t be too long, now.

On the culture front, the winter-to-spring series of house concerts has already started. There have been two monthly open mic/ coffee houses at the Odd Fellows Hall and a couple of other musical evenings in the same venue. November will see the annual Dawson City Museum Auction as well as a first of a series of Christmas bazaars that will run pretty much weekly into early December. The ODD Gallery continues to hold exhibits all year long and a stop there is always an interesting diversion. Speaking of the arts, the first week in November is the time for the annual Youth Art Experience week. This year the program will feature Fundamentals of Drawing with Meshell Melvin, Exploring Colour with Paint and Paper with Suzanne Paleczny, Basic Beading with Dolores Scheffen and The Art of Radio with George Maratos. After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City. Masq II Electronica Dance Party raising money for Kona’s Coalition

What’s Inside

by Lori Garrison

O

n Oct 31st Whitehorse residents will have a chance to work up a sweat to some sweet electronica tunes at the second annual Masq dance party. There will be a full bar, photo booth, catering, music and a costume contest with prizes from Air North, Earl’s and Yukon Brewing. The event is a fundraiser for Kona’s Coalition, a Whitehorsebased not-for-profit organization dedicated to animal welfare in the Yukon. Kona’s provides emergency care for animals who are injured, abandoned or abused, as well as providing funds for low-income pet owners whose animals need care they cannot afford. In 2014, the group spent approximately $60,00 on emergency animal care, says Masq II organizer and Kona’s Coalition Founding President Jordi Jones. “We are the animal rights watchdog for the Yukon… it’s imperative that people know that we are not government funded,” says Jones. “Animals are property – they don’t have rights and we have to change that. This a public consultation (on animal rights) as well as a hella awesome party.” Last year the event raised $10,000 for Kona’s, a number Jones says they are hoping to match again this year. She stresses that 100 per cent of the proceeds go to Kona’s Coalition, from ticket sales and from the bar, and that everyone at the event is a volunteer.

“I challenge people to think of (the ticket price) as a $25 donation for animal welfare,” she says. Last year, two-time Juno nominated MC Flipside (Natale Pizzonia) flew in from Toronto to play for the crowd, and he’s back again this year “by popular demand,” says Jones. “I love Whitehorse, it’s a beautiful town,” says Pizzonia. “Masq I was magical… the crowd

“I wanna show people all the different genres that have influenced me as an artist… my whole thing is this – I believe that music is the language of the soul and… I just want people to come out with an open mind, dance and have fun.” Pizzonia is also an animal lover, and has a Himalayan cat. “I think animals reflect the deepest part of our souls and I think Kona’s Coalition is a great cause,” he says. Local Whitehorse musicians DJKJ and Dash will also be performing. Sets will be staggered, so that each musician performs twice in case people come late and don’t want to miss anything. While the event is 19+ and alcohol will be served, Jones stresses she wants people to have a good time, but get home safe. There will be a water station and a safe ride home program. The event takes place at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Triple J’s Music, Tattoo and Piercings.

T

he Yukon Rendezvous Society is throwing a Halloween dance party again this year, and the theme is Back to the Future Part II. The trippy concept is that in 1989, when Back to the Future Part II came out, our man Marty (Michael J. Fox) time-travelled to the future and landed in 2015. And now we are living it. Derek Charlton, a volunteer with the society came up with the idea. “The concept came when we realized in 2014 that 2015 was the year that Marty and Doc (Christopher Lloyd) jumped to in Back to the Future II,” he says. “It was October 2015 that they jumped to in the movie.” The dance party, which is for adults only, will take place at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre on Friday starting at 8 p.m. The funk/pop band Major Funk and the Employment will entertain party goers with a live set. you want,” Charlton says. Aside from being a fun party, proceeds from the ticket sales will support the 2016 Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Festival in February. Fundraising enables the society to offer children’s admissions to Rendezvous events for free every year, and this Back to the Future II dance party will support that goal. Charlton is confident about the success of this Halloween party. A Buffet of Freaky Treats

Looking for direction in today’s market?

by Angela ‘Sinister’ Szymczuk

H

alloween parties for the mature crowd can’t simply offer a feast of candy and chips. We have issues such as cholesterol, blood pressure and the adult palate to keep in mind. Luckily, there are many healthy party snacks that can be served. Here are some ideas. For a sophisticatedbut-creepy appetizer try black caviar. Grab some shot glasses, fill them up with the caviar. Then, get a package of oval shaped crackers. Cut in half. Take a tube of icing (blood red colour) with a thin tip, write RIP. Stick the cookie on top of the caviar, standing upright. You now have a shot glass filled with dirt and a tombstone. Jello makes any party more fun. Find some tall blue glasses and skull and bones stickers. Get a mix of yellow and green jello, let it set in the glasses. When ready, take some yellow icing gel, and spread across the top. Stick your skull sticker on the glass. You now have glasses of toxic slime for your guests to savour. If you are the Martha Stewart type, then owls on toast is for you. Pick up a loaf of sliced pumpernickel bread. Then, get a plantain, smoked salmon cream cheese, almond haves, and a bag of unsalted pretzels. Take the pretzels, place them in your mortar and pestle, and gently crush. Take the plantain, and thinly slice. Get a pan with some olive oil, heat, drop the sliced plantain in. Fry until golden brown. Take the slice of pumpernickel bread. Strategically spread the smoked salmon cream cheese: two circular dollops for the eyes; an oval for the body;

When Investing, Put Time On Your Side Now that we’re well into autumn, the days are getting noticeably shorter. The change in seasons reminds us that time is passing – and it’s important to use that time wisely. When used well, in fact, time can be your greatest gift in many walks of life – and that’s certainly true when you invest.

An easy-to-make frozen yogurt spider that’s delicious and nutritious half ovals on the side of the body for the wings. Take two plantain chips and place for the eyes. Use the crushed pretzel and place on top of the oval cream cheese for the body. Take the almond haves to place over the wings. Take a small amount of nutella to make the eyeballs. You now have a Halloween owl for a snack. How about a poisoned apple for your Halloween party? You can make them with Rice Krispies. Follow the same recipe as Rice Krispie squares, but shape in a ball. Add red food colouring. Use a piece of green licorice for the stem. When ready, grab some brown and black icing. Blend to develop a rotten brown colour. Spread over half the apple. Take

some oreo cookies, crush them, and lightly sprinkle on the rotten side of your apple. For another sweet Halloween treat, try frozen yogurt with spiders. Get some chocolate frozen yogurt, scoop one big scoop on a plate. Add a much smaller scoop and attach it to the larger one. Take some long pretzel sticks and place four on each side for the legs. Place two orange jelly beans on the head for eyes. You now have a giant, but not too scary, spider to serve. Angela Szymczuk is a Whitehorse-based writer. To illustrate the importance of time, let’s look at a scenario. Suppose you start saving for retirement when you are 25. If you invest $3,000 at the beginning of each year in a tax-deferred vehicle, such as a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), and you hypothetically earn a 7% annual return, you will have accumulated more than $640,000 after 40 years, when you reach 65 and are ready to retire. (Keep in mind that you will be taxed on withdrawals.) Now, though, suppose you wait until you’re 55 before you start saving seriously for retirement. If you put that same $3,000 per year in that same RRSP, earning that same hypothetical 7% return, you’d only end up with slightly more than $44,000 after 10 years, when you reach 65. To receive the $640,000 you would have accumulated after 40 years by contributing just $3,000 per year earlier on, you would have had to put in about $43,300 per year for the 10 years between ages 55 and 65.* Clearly, it’s a lot easier to come up with $3,000 per year than $43,500. So, to accumulate the resources you need for a comfortable retirement, you can help your cause by saving and investing as early in your working life as possible – and then continue to save and invest right up to, and even during, your retirement years. The ability to potentially grow your portfolio sizably is the key benefit of using time when you invest – but it’s not the only benefit. You can also use time as a target, or a way to frame a specific investment goal. For example, suppose you have an 8-year-old child whom you want to send to college or university in 10 years. When that day arrives, wouldn’t it be nice to know that you’ve been saving money for a decade? The popular education savings vehicle is a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), which means any growth of your money is tax deferred until the time when you need it. You can also use time as a signal to adjust your investment strategy. If you’re going to reach your retirement goal in, say, two or three years, you might want to shift some – but certainly not all – of your assets from growth-oriented investments to incomeproducing ones. As you know, the market will always fluctuate, so you don’t want to be in a position where, once you retire, you need to start taking significant withdrawals – i.e., selling investments –when the market is down. Remember the time-honored rule of investing: “Buy low, sell high.” When you invest, make the best possible use of time – remember, it’s the one asset that can’t be replenished.

Looking for direction in today’s market? Let’s talk. *Examples are for illustration purposes only and do not reflect any specific investment. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Alaska Haunting

A hotel in Anchorage has ghosts who never check out by Angela Szymczuk

W

herever your travels take you, there is bound to be a place that has a ghost living in the shadows. England has the ghastly Tower of London, Romania has the mysterious Hoia Baciu forest, Japan has the eerie Hanging Ruins... Just over the border in Alaksa, our American neighbours have their fair share of haunting. There are several hotels, abandoned ship yards, and cemeteries that the locals and tourists alike say are haunted. I decided to do a bit of research to see how true this is. Much to my surprise, many locals didn’t want to talk about the spooky activity that is rumored to take place. I did, however, find one Alaska resident, located in Anchorage who was happy to share his experiences with the spirit world. Ryan Nolan is a front desk agent at the Historic Anchorage Hotel. He has been working there for more than three years, and has first-hand experience with the spirits that dwell within this place. “I was working the night shift, and all of a sudden I felt my tie tug,” Nolan says. “Then there was a constant tapping noise on the bell cart.” Another encounter Nolan had was in the basement of the hotel. At the top of the stairs there is a

long pipe that would lean against the railing. One evening Nolan needed to go down there.

own gun. In addition to gunshots, some people hear the sounds of heavy running or boots kicking on a door. There are some guests who say they feel as if they were being watched the entire time they spent in the room. At one point a psychic medium was brought in to survey the place for spirit activity. Nolan accompanied her. “She was able to identify spirit activity in each hotel room,” he says. In one room, she said she felt the presence of a female ghost, who hung herself because she was jilted at the altar. In another room she sensed an angry old man who felt the room belonged to him and did not like visitors. When Nolan tried to look at security tapes to see if any ghosts could be spotted, the strangest thing happened. “The camera footage went fuzzy and black and had weird lines. It did this for a few days.” Seems the only way to get check out the ghosts is to check in to the hotel.

An Old Crow Halloween

Late breakfast Weekends

by Jason Westover

I

looked out our window on Halloween Day, 2014. It was only -10ºC outside, but the trees were shaking as the wind howled making it much colder. The weather network put out a warning for Old Crow the night before announcing winds up to 40 kilometres per hour and there was snow everywhere. I had never seen a Halloween that was full on winter. I remember a few times it being cool with a dusting of snow, but never to the point where if we didn’t dress up in full winter gear we’d probably get frostbite. Melinda and I had been pushing the adventure of Halloween to little Emily for weeks and we finally got her to understand the concept of the candy acquisition from a stranger via the dressing up in a costume. And now I would have to crush her spirit by telling her it was too cold outside to go trick-or-treating. After one more glance out the window I said, “Screw it. Let’s go and see what happens. If it’s too cold we’ll come back in.” I didn’t want to look like a ding-a-ling taking my daughter out when nobody else did, so I had Melinda make a quick call to one of our friends to see if her children were going, and lo and behold they were. Halloween was on! We threw Emily into her snowsuit, slapped on her Curious George costume, started up the ski-doo and off we went. To my surprise and despite the hard wind, parents and kids were everywhere zipping up and down the road going from house to house – proof that northerners are a tough breed and the further north you go, the tougher they get.

404 WOOD STREET

Snow White and Sleeping Beauty engaged in Halloween discussion Lots of people got into the spirit of Halloween making their house spooky and dressing up as witches and ghouls as they gave away homemade goods and big handfuls of candy. Each home had that wood stove warmth that felt blissful on our cold faces. After 45 minutes of candy hunting we returned home, red faced and chilled, but with the knowledge that we earned every piece of our sugary delight. And that was just the beginning of the evening. Since arriving in Old Crow last January, one of the cool things about living here is how much everyone cares when it comes to holding special events or holidays. Our Old Crow Halloween actually started on October 30th at the community hall where a free pumpkin was given to each family and a carving night was held. Prizes were awarded for the best Jack-o-lanterns at the community’s Halloween night “Spooktacular.” I freestyled and made some unfortunate carving choices. However, the “Spooktacular” itself was great fun. Many people showed up in costume and the hall was continually filled with

laughter as costumed clowns, witches, trappers, and action figures danced and joked around. The toddlers and infants of the town were also in a constant flux of playing and being super cute. There was a nice spread of snacks, treats, and fruit for us to eat, along with costume contests, door prizes and games like “Musical Chairs” and “Pass the Pumpkin,” which I miss, now that we’re back in Whitehorse. The gala had live fiddle music to accompany the games and a quick jigging contest – and some of the Elders proved “they still go it!” The best costume of 2014 deservedly went to the person known only as “Big Bum,” while “Caribou,” “Old Witch,” and “Faceless Trapper” also got welldeserved prizes. Our family got home just after 10 p.m. and little Emily went out like a light. What a cold, tough, great Halloween.

Where Thereʼs a Wig, Thereʼs a Way

Need an idea for a Halloween costume? by Tamara Neely

I

f you’re under pressure to get a Halloween costume together, take note that going as a ghost in a sheet with holes cut for eyes seems quick and easy, but it’s a ball and chain that will be annoying all party long. The whole night will be spent trying to keep the eyeholes in place over your eyes, and you can’t eat or drink unless you haul the sheet up to your waist so you can reach out for drinks and snacks then bring them under the sheet up to your mouth. But awesome costumes are within easy reach in Whitehorse. There are two stores in town that specialize in decking people out for Halloween: The Great Canadian Dollar Store and Adult Temptations. In both cases you can either walk in with an idea and pick everything out yourself, or, you can walk in bewildered, under pressure and idea-less, and the staff will help you come up with something. One big difference between them is that you can’t shop with your kids at Adult Temptations. Peruse-rs have to be at least 19 years old due to the long wall of sex toys opposite the long wall of Halloween costumes and corsets. The Halloween costumes and accessories are pretty adult, too. “We have packaged costumes – where everything you need is in the package – or you can do an ensemble costume where you can put something together,” says Ellen Oppold, owner of Adult Temptations. Among the ready-to-go costumes are sexy little numbers for women such as a sexy female Mario Brothers costume, a genie, and a Little Red Riding Hood. They also have one called “Sexy Superhero Sidekick.” For the guys they have such costumes as a police officer, a zombie police officer, and a kind of Slim Goodbody unitard that shows the muscles of the body underneath skin. Prices for the packaged costumes range between $80 and $250. To make your own costume, they have such building blocks as fishnet stockings, feather boas, gold body paint, and tutus. Over at The Great Canadian Dollar Store they have gazillions of costume components, such as witches noses, Storm Trooper masks, and gold false eyelashes. They have been stocking the store with Halloween stuff for costumes, home décor, and party favours for 17 years, so they have developed a broad base of freaky stuff to build your Halloween experience around. Things like giant inflatable spiders for the front lawn, fake moustaches and beards, and Egyptian mummy cupcake kits. If you want to pop in and pick out a ready-to-go packaged costume, they have such things as a sexy devil kit for ladies ($6) a ninja kit for guys ($10) and costumes for infants and kids. However, for those with time to get creative, owner Lana Rae invites folks to tap into their knowledge of the store’s inventory. “We like to help people create their costumes because we don’t want everyone to look exactly the same,” Rae says. “So people come in and get personal attention. And if they want to be a – a werewolf-butterfly – we can make that happen.” One simple way to metamorphosize is to put on a wig. “Putting on a wig is a changer,” Rae says. “You’re a different person. I think that’s what people like about it. And it’s a really cheap way to transform yourself.” The Great Canadian Dollar Store has more than 200 different styles of wigs and they range from $15 to $25. “I sell tons of men’s mullets,” she says. “For the girls, it’s the coloured ones: blues and greens and pinks. “I get lots of requests for Day of the Dead wigs, and they come with a full face mask, a fabric mask that you can see through the eyes.” The zombie section of the store is really popular, she says, and they take special orders for folks going to zombie parties throughout the year. As a matter of fact, they have a dress-up section in the store all year long, which swells at Halloween time. “It’s so busy, it’s so crazy – and it’s really fun,” Rae says. The Great Canadian Dollar Store is located at 4230 4th Avenue. They are open until 6 p.m. every day except Friday, when they are open until 9 p.m. Adult Temptations is open Monday to Saturday from noon until 9 p.m. Tamara Neely is copy editor for What’s Up Yukon. You can comment on her stories by emailing tamara@whatsupyukon.com.

laude Turcotte was the father of my two younger kids, Josh and Sophie Turcotte, also Dad to then-toddlers Geordie MacInnis and Lee Robitaille. He was my partner, lover and frenemy from 1979 to 1988, when his shenanigans became too much for me. Claude came to Yukon in 1973 to work in Clinton Creek, and stayed for the adventure and party. He became a minor Yukon celeb in Dawson, and later in the ‘Horse. Originally from La Belle Province, he was an agent provocateur who loved to stir the pot and happily watch the ensuing chaos. He was King of Halloween. He went as the Tin Man one year, and wore an 80 pound culvert all night at Gerties. The next year he donned a massive fur coat, filled the foot of a pair of pantyhose with potatoes and pulled it over his head to impersonate The Elephant Man. He created a fat suit to mimic a known RCMP informant and the guy left the Territory right afterwards. Dressed as a Quebec Referendum ballot box in 1995, all his ballots were pre-marked Non. When he partied out of control, he’d call the cops on himself, then rumble with them when they came to get him. Sometimes he called just for a ride home; the RCMP figured that out and quit coming. When looking for a scrap, he’d pick the biggest guy around. While not always victorious, he was usually less damaged than he should have been. After we split he loved to push my buttons. He was really good at it and it made his day when I flew off the handle in public.

“He was a benevolent spirit, in many ways a more courteous houseguest than he was alive.”

was my imagination or the wind, or chalked it up to minor seismic activity. He was a benevolent spirit, in many ways a more courteous houseguest than when he was alive. But I bet it frustrated him that without a body he couldn’t make much noise. He’d usually stay for a week or two, and it got so I could count on it and looked forward to his visit. I’d tell him how the kids were doing, and how much they missed him. One year Sophie was back home in the month of April, so he stayed the whole month. Through the decade or so of his hauntings, my feelings have mellowed. Some years ago, he walked unannounced (as always) into one of my most vivid dreams. This was a random occurrence, like so many things in his life, and on this occasion I was really glad to see him. In hindsight I think we both had things to work out with each other, and he didn’t stop visiting until that was done. Ask any Yukoner who knew Claude, they all have their own personal tale to tell about him. The smart bet is that even the most outlandish of them is true. In hindsight, it makes perfect sense for him come back and unsettle the living, just to get the last word.

and Yvan came from Quebec for the funeral in Dawson. Sadly, with our checkered past, I was mostly just mad at him. It makes some kind of sense that not long afterwards he came back to haunt our house. This was always in April, not just the

Theatre group hosts a 1950s Sock Hop Film Night at The Old Fire Fall on Saturday by Gaby Sgaga

ig out your poodle skirt and put on your saddle shoes. The Open Pit Theatre is hosting a 1950s Sock Hop Film Night in Whitehorse on Saturday. The evening features five films with an on-the-spot, improvised soundtrack by live actors and musicians. “The movies are the main entertainment,” says Geneviève Doyon, co-artistic director of Open Pit Theatre. “But there will also be a photo booth, a bar serving ‘50s classic cocktails, and prizes that were donated by local businesses and organizations. There is lots of variety and diversity.” Only four to 10 minute excerpts will be shown from each film. The

audio will be turned off, replaced with the live, made-up dialogue by the actors, and the soundtrack provided by the musicians. Brian Fidler and Erica Bigland will be on the hook to come up with the voice overs, and Victoria composer Brooke Maxwell, cocreator of the acclaimed musical Ride the Cyclone, has been confirmed as the keyboard player. A drummer will also be added to the mix. The format for this improvisation is that the live actors and the musicians get to see the clips once, but no one is allowed to practice. “The calibre of artists and musicians is high. You need talented people to show up and just cont’d on page 18...

She feels that by mixing the mediums of film, music and dance, it will add fun elements to the evening. And offering improv is the icing on the cake. “We want to make the evening an experience,” she says. The Open Pit Theatre’s 1950s Sock Hop Film Night is a fundraiser for the theatre’s next production, called Words of the Yukon, coming out in the 201617 season. Gabriela Sgaga lives off the grid in her West Dawson cabin with her sled dogs. She enjoys mushing, skijoring and writing about everyday life in the Yukon. Please send comments about her articles to dawson@whatsupyukon.com wing it,” says Doyon. “It’s a free for all. Some moments will be more music, some more dialogue. It will depend on the scene.” The movies will cover a wide variety of genres: thriller, glamour, sci-fi, lady wrestlers and badass attitude. “We selected movies that would be fun, but we also wanted a variety of styles to show that the fifties were more than just bubble gum and sodas – they were also glamourous and dark too.” The clips will be divided up into three sessions so there will be plenty of time for other events during the breaks. But don’t think you can just go home after the movies are over. The musicians are prepared to keep playing, turning film night at the fire hall into a sock hop. Free swing and jive lessons will be offered by professional dancer Jessica Hickman, who is also an artistic director of Open Pit Theatre. Doyon promises The Old Fire Hall will look very different once it’s decorated to look like a 1950s dance hall. The public is also encouraged to come dressed up in the style of the time.

Murderously Funny Noir-Comedy

Butt Kapinski runs at the Old Fire Hall Oct. 28-31

Deanna Fleysher is Butt Kapinski

T

his Halloween season The Yukon Arts Centre (YAC) will present Butt Kapinksi at The Old Fire Hall, an interactive comedic murder mystery set in the style of a classic film noir movie. The show’s creator and star, Deanna Fleysher, slips into the gritty shoes of private eye Butt Kapinski as he endeavors to solve a murder with only a single street lamp to guide his way. YAC’s artistic director Eric Epstein first caught wind of Deanna Fleysher after hearing about her work with the internationally acclaimed show Red Bastard, which she co-wrote and directed. “I heard a number of things about Butt Kapinski and I got to go to Vancouver and see it for myself,” Epstein says. “I don’t want give away too much but it was one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. It was so much fun to dive into this world.” Deanna Fleysher is up to the

task bringing Butt and his seedy underworld to life. Graduating with honours from Amherst College in Massachusetts, a native of New York now residing in Los Angeles, she spends her time teaching, writing, directing and performing. She considers herself a comedy artist specializing in physical theatre and improv. Fleysher created her Kapinski character nine years ago. “Butt came to me on a street corner in New York City,” she says. “I’ve done different shows over the years with the character: a show with other comedians, a street show, and now this show. No matter what, Butt has always been Butt.” Who, exactly, is this salty private eye? “Butt Kapinski is a dashing, dangerously whip-smart private detective hell bent on unearthing the seedy side of Whitehorse, and hopefully going to a Halloween

party,” she says. “Butt Kapinski is a big idiot, trying to make a film noir, without a camera or actors or scenery or any of the usual movie-making devices. I am wearing a portable streetlamp, which serves as the only light in the show, and the ‘camera.’ The light allows me to move around the room, cast interesting shadows, make cinematic moments, use light and dark like a classic film noir.” The show is for mature audiences and Fleysher points out it’s not for the easily offended. Though the show is interactive and unpredictable no one should be worried about being put on the spot. “All audiences are different, so every show is different,” she says. “Butt Kapinski doesn’t make fun of

anyone; it’s a safe space for all, provided everyone loves film noir or pretends to very convincingly. It’s cool when audiences are a good mix of ages, sexes, races, creeds – but I take whatever comes. It’s always a fun ride.” For those who would like to come a bit early to mingle, Ramshackle theatre will be running a bar to start the evening.

Butt Kapinski runs at The Old Fire Hall from Oct 28-31. Eric Epstein encourages all to dress up in their favourite film noir character. For ticket and workshop information go to www.YukonArtsCentre.com Jason Westover is a performer who lives in Whitehorse.

Hobgoblins, Skulls, and Warlocks

W

hile the chip and candy industry churns out boxes of treats for the kids, there lies another type of treat adults can enjoy at Halloween: creepy cigars. With names like Insidious, Exorcist, and Warlock, there is a niche market of cigars with freaky name. First, the cigar called Insidious. Line this cigar up with the others made by Asylum Cigars and you would think the owner had an affinity for the dark side of Halloween: Nyctophilia (lover of the dark), Straight Jacket, Dragon’s Milk, and 99 Problems. Going back to Insidious, the label features a picture of a skull – which is appropriate I’d say. The cigar is wrapped in an Ecuador Connecticut leaf. The size I am having is 6x52. To go with the cigar, I am having a glass of wine called Skulls. This wine is a Shiraz from Australia, with a very unique label. The drawing on the label appears to be a person relaxing in a hammock in the country. But this is an optical illusion. Look more closely and you see the head of a skull. I light up insidious. This cigar is very much on the lighter side of things. The cap of the cigar is sweetened. You don’t see this very often among cigars, but it does taste nice. The Skulls wine pairs very well. It is a full bodied wine. Given the light nature of the cigar, the wine can be enjoyed without any overpowering flavours from the smoke. The first third of insidious has light flavours of vanilla and toasted almonds. The second third is pure vanilla. In the last third there

is a bit of a honey taste, the vanilla lingers through. This is by far the lightest tasting cigar I have ever had. Why would they call such a light, honey-vanilla cigar Insidious? I thought with a name like that, Asylum would have given it a darker flavour wheel. Alas, it’s is still a nice cigar. I would recommend this for any ladies who are thinking of taking up cigar smoking. For those who enjoy the stronger sticks Insidious will taste like air. Next up is Recluse. There are different sizes, each with its own name. The one I have is called Tarantula, which is a 6x60. This is a maduro cigar (a very strong, brown variety) wrapped in a Brazilian maduro leaf. This size is also a box press –a cigar with a rectangular shape instead of a cylinder - and I’m not a fan of the box press; I find its shape awkward and difficult to hold between my fingers. To go with this cigar is a beer called Hobgoblin, created by the Wychwood Brewery in England. The label going around the neck of the bottle has a picture of a witch on a broomstick. This beer is a dark English ale, and has flavours of coffee and dark chocolate. I begin to light Recluse. The first few puffs are bitter and repugnant – maybe that’s what tarantula venom tastes like. Once you get past that, the cigar turns into something quite nice. Smooth flavours of cream and cinnamon spice finish out the first third. The second third tastes of crushed walnuts, clove spice, and cream. The last third has a bit of cedar, spice,

PHOTO: Angela Szymczuk and leather. The Hobgoblin beer goes well with this cigar. The coffee taste balances nicely with the cigar’s smooth spice. Recluse is a medium bodied cigar, with a nice presentation. At the bottom, a thick red ribbon wraps around the foot of the stick. Something maybe Dracula would enjoy? Now that we have opened up the realm of the insidious recluse, it’s time to go find the exorcist. For this, we turn to Gurkha. A line of cigars has been released called Gurkha Ghost. The cigar comes in different sizes, and like Recluse, it is also wrapped in a Brazilian maduro wrapper. I am trying size 6x60, which is called Exorcist. Right from the start you can smell chocolate and blueberries from this stick even before it is lit. To go with this cigar I am having a vodka martini using Crystal Skull . vodka – which is in a bottle that is the shape of a skull. My martini is simple. In the style of James Bond it is shaken not stirred. I add two olives on a toothpick. I have never had a cigar with a vodka martini before, so this will be interesting. I begin the Exorcist. The flavours are very rich. The first third tastes like a mix of chocolate covered blueberries and nuts. The martini has a taste of its own, but is still enjoyable with the opposing flavours of the cigar. The second third has more dark chocolate,

and some dark coffee. The flavours become more rich. This cigar is quite bold and intense. The last third does not change much from the second, and towards the very end, there is a strong chili taste. Upon reflection, I rather liked the martini pairing with this cigar. Lastly, we come to the Warlock. The size I have is a 6x54. The wrapper is an Ecuadorian Cubano. To go with it, I am having a Pumpkin Ale made by the Great Lakes Brewery, based in Toronto, ON. The start of Warlock tastes like dried herbs. This evolves into a straw and apple taste. The beer is fantastic – it tastes like pumpkin pie. However, this beer is not the best beverage to accompany Warlock. Given the dry herb undertones, I think a white wine with pear flavour might go better. Moving on. The second third of Warlock tastes like grass or burnt wood. The last third picks up some dried spice from the first, with a bit of apple cinnamon. Overall, it’s not an awful cigar, but not a great one either. For a more ghoulish experience enjoy your sip and stogie in the dark with haunting Halloween sounds in the background. Phil’s Tire Tips

Do you have a tire

THAT YOU HAVE BEEN AIRING UP EVERY SO OFTEN?

Did you know that if you have one or more low tires, your fuel economy will be significantly decreased? Therefore continuing to add air to your tire when it runs low may be costing you more in fuel economy than it would be to have the tire repaired. Studies have shown that the decrease in economy may be as high as 15% in excess fuel consumption. Furthermore when you operate your vehicle with a low tire it may cause permanent damage to the tire causing it to be prematurely removed from service due to irreparable damage.

Raymond Carver Vintage Books (1993)

by Anthony Bourdain Bloomsbury Publishing (2000)

Short Cuts

Understated and deceptively calm, Carver’s short stories should be a staple of any well-read literary diet. The book opens with the short story Neighbours, a tight, terse little piece which revolves around a young couple housesitting the apartment of another, financially better-off, young couple, delving rapidly into the jealousy and covetousness of the “keeping up with the Joneses” mentality. Writing from post-war America and the rapid rise of consumer culture, Carver’s stories immerse readers in a world of oneup-manship where characters are constantly trying to move towards something “better” – a better car, a better job, a better house, a better lover. Carver’s characters are often workaday Joes whose familiarity is eerie; they could be your father, your grandfather, a boyfriend or an uncle. The story They’re Not Your Husband, wherein a man convinces his wife to go on a diet in order to make other men jealous of him, stands out not only in the collection, but as an inadvertent example of consumerism today.

Philosophy:

Kitchen Confidential

Atlas Shrugged

How does a drunken, cocaineaddicted, high-school educated punk with virtually no social skills rise to fame, money and power to become a world class chef and entrepreneur, with multiple restaurants and two TV shows? Well, he starts out as a dishboy in Maine and works his way from there, that’s how. Part-autobiography and part big screw-you to what we commonly think of as a “success story,” Kitchen Confidential is raw, accessible and real. People who have worked in restaurants as cooks or servers will especially appreciate the gritty detail with which Bourdain portrays life behind those swinging double doors. Bourdain flips between his own personal struggle to make it as a chef as he deals with alcohol and drug problems and exposing the dirty little secrets restaurants don’t want you to know. Contains sex, drugs, rare beef, more sex, more drugs, cursing, big personalities, more drugs, alcohol and copious amounts of inexplicably likeable machismo.

A highly contentious work of frankly fanatical devotion to wealth and power where CEOs and business owners are tantamount to minor gods, Atlas Shrugged is as much beloved by some schools of thought as it is maligned by others. If you can stomach Rand’s preachy tone – Atlas Shrugged was her last foray into fiction before becoming a full-time philosopher and public figure – she has some interesting things to say about the nature of both capitalism and the human condition. It should be read not as a manifesto of Capitalism, but as a capitalist’s fantasy, featuring beautiful and sexually ambitious railroad executives, mysterious geniuses and the ever-tightening fist of an increasingly totalitarian government. Whether you agree with Rand or not, the book is, in the very least, entertaining and Rand is adept at seizing your attention and holding it. If you pick this book up, though, you should set aside some time, as it clocks in at a bloated 1,200 pages. (Quick Hint: Skip the 200-something page monologue towards the end).

T

hat time of year has come again and Halloween is upon us. Goblins, ghouls and vampires are sure to be scouring the streets on the 31st of October in search of the houses’ treasure: candy. But among the 4 foot gremlins, the outlines of lanky teenagers will be visible, which begs the question: How old is too old to trick or treat? Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, has been around since ancient times. However, where in its history does it state the age group of people celebrating this ancient festival? I don’t think there was a cut-off in the old days, and yet somehow in our society today it is deemed not okay for teens to go trick-or-treating. I remember when I turned 14 my parents looked at me and said, “Honey I think you’re getting too old for this, why don’t you hand out candy?” Hand out candy?! I don’t think my parents realized I was on a student’s budget and any festival that promoted free things I was going to wholeheartedly be a part of. Growing up it seemed adulthood grew nearer every day and so the few things that kept me feeling like a kid I made sure to keep intact. Dressing up like some crazy

being and running from house to house for candy did not seem like a bad thing to me. And yet for some reason at my age it was frowned upon. The alternative activity would most likely involve a Halloween party consisting of less candy and more not-so-great temptations. So, why not allow young adults to feel like kids one night a year? The price might only be that you have to buy one extra bag of Mars Bars. At least the whereabouts of your child would be known. One day I’m sure teens will decide they’ve outgrown the wonderful feeling of trick-or-treating and would rather spread the magic than receive it. Hopefully that will be when they are ready to do so. The feeling of magic has become harder and harder to find so it is in festivals like this one that

we must keep it alive. Hallowe’en has been around in its ghoulish form for over two millennia and we should continue to live out the tradition. It is a festival where people of all ages can participate and let the darkest corners of their imaginations be set free. So perhaps there should be no age limit on trick-or-treating. We just can’t be complaining when the silhouettes of 1-year-olds to 99-year-olds are seen throughout the streets excitedly walking from house to house collecting their Halloween treats.
