n the early ‘90s I semi-regularly attended the United Church with my family. This involved weekly Sunday school lessons, plus the occasional extracurricular congregational picnic or evening potluck.

The evening potlucks were my favourite events because after dinner, while the parents drank coffee and chatted (or whatever parents did in the early ‘90s) the children were allowed to form an informal posse to explore the clay cliffs, which beckoned just beyond the fringe of the church parking lot.

On one such sojourn about half a dozen similarly-aged explorers, myself included, hiked into the woods behind Main Street and discovered more than we ever dreamed: blown by the wind and caught up amongst the bushes were a few dozen glossy pages, torn from a magazine.

Curious as we were, investigation revealed that these pages had not come from any old rag; they had been ripped from a dirty magazine. There, tangled in the northern foliage, were men and women woven together in lewd poses.

And amidst the body parts that flailed around every-which-way there were clearly identifiable

breasts. Breasts!

This was no sly glance at a Sears catalogue; this was the real deal.

In the currency of youth in the early ‘90s, our little troupe had stumbled upon a treasure chest.

Not quite believing our luck we mostly just giggled and pointed.

I wasn’t quite sure what it was that we had found, but I knew it was valuable, so when our parents’ voices echoed in clay cliffs, directing us to come back, I grabbed a wad of loose pages and jammed them into my back pocket. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.

The drive home was a nervous one. I knew my parents would not approve of my hidden bounty so I sat quietly in the back seat and hatched a plan to safely stash my plunder.

In those days my family lived in one of the old steel duplexes in Hillcrest and our backyard bordered a greenbelt that functioned as a park for all the neighbourhood kids. I decided to bury my loot in this vast expanse.

So, on the next available weeknight I took my collection of magazine pages, carefully sealed them in a Ziploc bag and headed into the back 40 to find a suitable hiding spot.

I dug up a big patch of moss

about 10 yards off the trail, placed my baggie against the raw earth and then resurfaced the whole area with the moss.

It was safely secured there for about a week and then it was gone. No doubt one of the other kids from Park Lane made a giddy discovery of their own.

Like it or not, finding your first porno and deciding what to do with it was one of the essential rites of passage for youngsters of my generation and the generations that came before.

But the early ‘90s gave way to the mid ‘90s, which in turn gave way to a whole new millennium.

And with the march of time came the advancement of Internet technology, which rendered this rite of passage completely obsolete.

The kids today just don’t get it.

A recent article published in the Daily Mail reported that when a group of 20 multi-gendered 13-14 year olds were questioned, every single one of them confirmed that they had seen sodomy porn.

Sure, they’ve leered upon things I could barely have imagined at that age, but I bet none of them know the clandestine thrill of sneaking out after dinner to hide a few crumpled pictures of naked women.

As far as I’m concerned, I win.

To: Japan, With Love From: Whitehorse Art exhibition features kids’ compassion for tsunami victims in Japan

A

hand-drawn card from a child — featuring a heart, or people holding hands — is powerful stuff. It can bring a lump to the throat for moms and other sensitive types.

That’s the kind of innocent beauty that can be found in a set of quilts that arrived in Whitehorse from Japan this month, and are on exhibit until Nov. 5.

The quilts are made of squares of fabric, each one designed with warm wishes from Canadian kids to kids in Japan.

Last year Whitehorse elementary students drew images of love and compassion on one-foot by one-foot square cloths for kids their age in Japan who lived through the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The initiative, called the Canada-Tohoku Kids to Kids Cloth Letters Project, was the idea of Japanese Canadian filmmaker Linda Ohama. Ohama, based in Vancouver, spread the word across Canada that all were invited to channel their concern, shock, and empathy into this action of creativity and love.

Here in Whitehorse, retired teacher Fumi Torigai and his wife Taeko heard about the project in March of 2012 and approached the school system with an invitation to participate.

Their interest in this arty and emotional project came on the heels of helping to fundraise serious cash — $40,000 — for the Red Cross in Japan.

“We felt this was a very nice way to support kids who were devastated by the earthquake and tsunami, and in a way, continue the connection between the people of Whitehorse and the Japanese people,” says Torigai, who is president of the Japanese Canadian Association of Yukon (JCAY).

Three classes in Whitehorse participated: one from Christ the King, Jack Hulland, and Whitehorse Elementary Schools. The cloth letters were then mailed to Vancouver, and added to the ones made by students from across Canada. Organizers sewed them all together into a series of fivefoot by 12-foot quilts, and mailed them off to Tohoku, Japan.

“The original idea for the project was for the Canadian kids to communicate with the Japanese kids, and they didn’t have to know the language – they could commu-

The second movie is set in Tokyo in the 1960s, which is a period burned into JCAY President Fumi Torigai’s memory – he was a young man in university at that time.

“From my personal point of view, that’s a good era to learn about people’s feelings and how people deal with each other,” Torigai says. “This film is about ordinary people’s life. So there’s a lot of humour and maybe some sad episodes in it, and successes and failures – all those life stories.”

The set of quilts toured Japan, and have come back to North America to visit several Canadian cities. Fifteen quilts have arrived in Whitehorse, and are on display at the Yukon Arts Centre and the Canada Games Centre.

The Canada-Tohoku Kids to Kids Cloth Letters Project will be on exhibit at the Yukon Arts Centre and at the Canada Games Centre from Oct. 25 to Nov. 5.

Yukon Artists: At Work for 10 Years

Yukon Artists @ Work gallery features hundreds of works of original art. The co-op is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Nov. 1 with an opening reception for a new show of work by Lillian Loponen.

T

here will be music on the walls and in the air when the Yukon Artists @ Work (YAAW) Gallery celebrates its 10th anniversary on November 1.

The gallery, the Yukon’s only not-for-profit artists’ co-operative, is celebrating a decade of artist support with a show by one of its original members, Lillian Loponen. The co-op’s accomplished watercolourist will present “a melody of old and new visual tunes.”

That musical theme is appropriate — it’s a joyful time for the co-op’s members, who have at times struggled to keep the business alive, and its membership united.

The gallery had humble beginings, recalls Harreson Tanner, who was first approached in 2003 with the idea by local artists Linda

Glass and Philomena Carroll.

“We worked out the concept of artists taking control of their own careers by creating their own venue to promote their art,” he recalls. “We wanted to create a supportive community to develop the local market and outside-theterritory markets for artists.”

The first venue, at what is now the Rosati Arts and Business Centre in the McCrae subdivision, created a funky alternative showcase for Yukon artists. Approximately a dozen artists were there for the opening. Since then, it has grown to more than 35 members: printmakers and photographers, sculptors and painters, artists working with wood, glass, metal, and every media in between.

The gallery is run by a volunteer board, which juries its members in. All work has to be original

to the Yukon, by Yukon artists.

Artists pay a monthly membership, and take turns staffing the gallery seven days a week. As an artist-run gallery, it takes a smaller commission than a commercial space, making it a good place for emerging artists to make money while building their careers.

“It is a lovely means to present and sell work on a grassroots, community level,” says photographer Marten Berkman, a member for nine years. “It is huge in connecting to my local community and Yukon visitors alike.”

The gallery began has been visited by the likes of Governor General Michaelle Jean in 2007 and 2010 Olympics CEO John Furlong. It was also named one of the top 10 hidden gems of Canada by the global tourism website TripAdvisor.

But having a social conscience accompanies commerce at YAAW. The gallery has hosted fundraisers for organizations like Blood Ties, helped out members through difficult financial times or medical emergencies, and created the Artists Relief Fund.

The power of the co-op is in its ability to connect artists with the public. It’s what visual artist Nicole Bauberger loves about YAAW, even though she was dubious when first approached.

“I had no interest in working retail,” she recalls. “But over the years I have come to love working my shifts. Talking to visitors to the gallery and having them reflect back to me what they see in my

art has helped shape my thinking about art itself.”

Which is not to say there haven’t been differences of opinion, hard times in economic down turns, and struggles over direction and strategy. Still, Tanner has no problems explaining the secrets of YAAW’s success.

“The model has survived for 10 years through huge volunteer commitments, both time and money, on the backs of its members,” he says. “It has provided a fantastic venue for every Yukoner to be proud of, to take ownership of and to support.”

Jazz from the Fertile New York Scene

W

e’ll be getting a visit from a couple of New York jazz musicians on Sunday. On Oct. 27, saxophonist Mike DiRubbo and pianist Larry Willis will be delivering their own unique jazz sounds at the Yukon Arts Centre, playing songs from their 2011 album Four Hands, One Heart.

DiRubbo says this is the first time they are making a visit to Whitehorse.

“I am looking forward to it,” he says. “I had a weekend booked at the Cellar in Vancouver with Larry Willis, and contacted the Yukon Jazz folks about our duo project, and here we are.”

DiRubbo is no stranger to the vibrant jazz world.

“I have been playing seriously for 25 (years), but I’ve had a horn in my hands for over 34 years,” he says.

The musician has played numerous shows across the globe, and shows no signs of slowing down, founding his own record label, Ksanti Records in 2011.

“The disintegration of the major labels plus the elimination of middle-man distribution, because of the internet, has paved

Next, DiRubbo’s hopes to raise money for his seventh album through a crowd-source funding company called Indiegogo (www.indiegogo.com), which will allow patrons to contribute to his musical vision.

“Through the use of a crowd funding campaign, you are directly supporting the artist, and the artist delivers music to you in the purest form without any outside influences,” he says.

Different donation levels come with perks ranging from a personal saxophone lesson with DiRubbo, to being named as a producer on the album.

I have lived in the Yukon pretty much my whole life. I, like many other Yukoners, am proud of all that this beautiful land has to offer!

I once tried to get a fireweed tattoo done in Vancouver, but they found it difficult to design from a picture so it did not work out. I was home in Watson Lake last fall and went into the interpretive centre to visit a dear friend and she proceeded to tell me that her co-worker, a young girl I have known her whole life, was now tattooing. I asked her if she could do my fireweed tattoo and she said yes. Two days later I had it done and am very proud of the wonderful job she did. I also got her to tattoo Yukon wild roses on my other leg. I love the Yukon and am proud to have our beautiful territorial flower as a tattoo. I get comments on how lovely it is every time I show it!

A Recipe for Bresaola

Butchering is a way to get up close and personal with food from the land

F

or much of this week the smell of hanging meat has been lingering in my nostrils, and my hands are abnormally soft. That’ll be because it’s butchering time.

While I have never harvested a moose, I like getting up close and personal with my food and I value the experience of butchering – it takes skill and patience, and results in a knowing of the sustenance-giving animal.

The hours spent in the company of a recently living creature fuels storytelling and contemplation.

As I trim and slice I listen to how this particular life, full of rushing blood and hormones and wild scents, came into contact with another life, one thinking about food for the year ahead for family and friends. I think of how, for a moment, the earth stood still, noth-

ing existing outside of these two beings, of how for an instant there was a connection where they almost became one – and an abrupt parting, one life remaining.

We work on a front quarter, following muscles and tendons to bone, looking back and forth between our knives and instructional books open to diagrams of cows, marked out with neat dashed lines, as arbitrary as any lines on a map.

I share the disbelief I see on my friend’s face. We both find it incredible that these neatly labeled packages of meat for the freezer we are making are one-and-thesame as the animal that he had watched in his element, on a sandbar in the middle of the river.

One single animal was the source of all the weight he carried from sandbar to camp, camp to

boat, boat to truck, and finally to the shop where each piece hung on its own cord, turning slowly in the low light.

When we butcher a cow, we call it beef, but a moose stays moose.

Witnessing the transformation of butchering helps me remember this.

Kim Melton is an enthusiastic forager and gardener, inspired by all things that make up good, local food.

Bresaola is a good introduction to meat curing because it doesn’t involve grinding or chopping – techniques that increase surface area and thus the potential for contamination. Traditionally made with beef round, I have adapted this recipe from Preserved by Nick Sandler and Johnny Acton.

PHOTO: Kim MeltonI’ve had good results with the adaptation, which can be used with a variety of moose roast cuts and local flavours. The spicing can vary according to local availability and preference.

INGREDIENTS 3 pounds raw moose, for example, rump roast 1 ¼ pound non-iodized salt 2 tablespoons sugar ½ cup red wine 4 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons Korean chili flakes 2 whole Espellette chilis Labrador tea leaves, rosemary, black pepper, juniper berries, chili powder, black pepper and herbs, such as thyme, and rosemary

Traditionally made with beef, Bresaola lends itself well to moose.

METHOD • Mix all ingredients in a ceramic or glass container and rub well into roast.

• Tie with string and let sit in the cure for one week, turning and coating once per day.

• Remove and wrap in several layers of cheesecloth. Tie up again and hang in a cool dry place for three weeks to a month until hard and dry.

• Store in a cool dry place and slice thinly into soups and atop salads, omitting salt from your recipes.

A Visit with Canada’s Art Darling Janice Cliff reminisces with her old friend, Toronto-based artist, Shary Boyle

She put her time in as a typical Dawson transient for the summer. From Dawson she fled to San Francisco, then to Amsterdam and beyond, catapulting into 15-years of wanderlust. The work she produced in those years was small out of necessity; it would fit into a suitcase. Besides printmaking, she’s a pretty good drawer; she also dabbled in pet portraits, oil on vellum, selfpublished books, and miniature sculpture work using Sculpey and thread. When the ODD Gallery opened its doors in 1999, it featured a solo show of her paintings and Vellum work.

Still on the search for the ever-elusive perfect place, the universe would rubber band her back to Dawson every once in a while. She returned to be the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture’s first artist in residence, and then onward-ho to LA, Berlin, Paris and Winnipeg to collaborate on performance pieces with Peaches, Feist, and Christine Fellows. She hates the idea of being complacent, or settled, or tied down... she’s allergic to it.

Toronto would finally grab her, though – for practical purposes. You know, like a career, a studio. The things you need to be able to make artwork on a grand scale.

he’s taller than I remember. I have an impish image of Shary Boyle stuck in my mind – a gawky figure hunched over with devious playfulness sparkling in her eyes.

Maybe I’ve gazed at her immense body of work so often I have come to think of her drawings as literal representations of her. The image is bunk: Canada’s darling choice for the 2013 Venice Biennale ain’t no slouch.

She was in town this month to collaborate with a stellar crew of musicians on The Cost of Doing Business; an album marrying (get ready for it…)Baby Eagle, Wax Mannequin, Construction + Destruction, Michael Feuerstack, Shotgun Jimmie, Kyle Cashen, Marine Dreams, Richard Laviolette and The Burning Hell. The album is due to be released in the new year by Headless Owl Records.

Shary pitched in some backup vocals, projected visuals for two live performances, and will be producing the album cover art.

I meet with my old friend when she’s here, and as soon as I see her I’m already pining for the next time, and the next.

A conversation with Shary Boyle will run the gamut of the usual stuff: from Allyson Mitchell’s vagina guillotine to the extraordinary amount of Ikea furniture in Whitehorse, and then on to the idea of the True Arctic…

“You fly over the snow wall and that wall goes up to space… when you’re that far north the south ceases to exist,” she says.

Shary has been slipping in and out of the North since she was a fresh-faced, just-graduated, little OCAD punk. I met her in 1995. She was a vagabond waif, peddling her artwork for sustenance. She arrived in Dawson City with a teenage fantasy of the North, intent on finding a print-making co-op within a town of 1800 miners, and an apartment.

Dawson can be a cruel dream-killer. She ended up in a borrowed tent pitched on the snow on the other side of the river, and a pilgrimage to John Steins’ studio door proved futile – at first – as he had just departed for Toronto. ad 1 for What’s Up Yukon But Shary doesn’t give up. Exhibitions of her artwork can be found in Italy at the 2013 Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition; in France at the Centre Georges Pompidou; in Ottawa at the National Gallery of Canada; and in Toronto at the Art Gallery of Ontario. She is a recipient of two Canadian awards: the 2010 Hnatyshyn Foundation Award of $25,000, and the 2009 Gershon Iskowitz Prize of $25,000. She was also shortlisted for the 2009 Sobey Art Award of $70,000 from the Art

Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Yet she’s the same turkey who karaoked her way into my heart so many years ago.

I asked her why the landscape of the North keeps plucking her out of the bright lights.

“I feel like coming up to the Yukon allows you a perch from which to observe,” Shary says. “This is the first chance I’ve had to come all this way since 2006 with Christine Fellows. After (the 2013 Biennale in) Venice, that experience was so ungrounding. I’m out of my body and too much into my head.

It is a gift to be able to come up here and get in touch with reality. I’m putting myself into the service of something else.

Musicians are so collaborative, and my art practice is solitary.

This collective endeavour is joyful and sharing. It’s a relief.”

Frost to Frost... with Joan Norberg

The Joy of Homegrown Tomatoes

It was a great summer for growing delicious tomatoes.

othing tastes quite as good as a garden fresh tomato.

Here in the North these are rare enough to find, but this past summer we had enough heat to grow tomatoes outside without any protection from the elements, though we did fence them off from the laying hens.

I started seedlings indoors around mid-March. And I went against the odds, using a seed variety I had limited success with in the past and another variety with which I was unfamiliar.

However, the seedlings germinated well and as a precaution against “damping off” fungal growth I watered them with chamomile tea.

The tomato plants grew inside as we waited for spring, which was taking it’s time showing up.

Thankfully, tomato seedlings are very forgiving. They can be transplanted a few times before they start to flower and set fruit.

Transplanting is stressful to plants and adding stress to a plant while it is flowering isn’t a good idea, so I try to make sure this is done before the plants start to bud.

When transplanting tomato plants, covering their lower branches and stalks with soil will allow them to grow more roots.

These extra roots help to bring in more nutrients and water.

Last year we built a new flower garden close to the house, but hadn’t planted anything in it yet, so that’s where I decided to put the tomatoes. There, they would not be forgotten in the busy summer days and they would benefit from added heat retention from the raised bed and rocky slope behind the bed.

They loved the location.

I had planted basil alongside the tomato plants as a companion plant, but after a few weeks they were no longer visible. The tomatoes were starting to bush out and take over the bed; we even had to extend the perimeter fence to accommodate them. They soon engulfed the fence, as well. Some plants were nearly four feet high.

Never had I seen tomatoes grow like this in the North, especially without a greenhouse. They got so thick with branches we couldn’t tell if they had flowered and set any fruit.

I knew looking would do more damage than good, so I left them.

When we got our first heavy frost in mid-September, I pulled the plants and harvested the tomatoes. None of them were ripe, but they all had escaped the frost and were in good condition.

I put them in a box with some apples and waited for them to ripen. And in a few weeks we were enjoying the fruits of our labour.

There is nothing better than the taste of a fresh ripe tomato, unless it has been grown on your own soil.

A Subversive Singer-Songwriter Comes to the Yukon

W

hile Martha Wainwright began her current tour a year ago to promote her latest CD, Come Home to Mama, she says the North American portion of the tour has evolved into something a little more wide-ranging.

“At this point we’ve moved from promoting the latest album to doing songs from the previous two or three albums, actually,” Wainwright says. “So it’s really a variety of songs, as well as I also like to do a couple of my mom’s songs to draw attention to this new great record that came out in June.”

Sing Me the Songs: Celebrating the Works of Kate McGarrigle is a tribute album to Wainwright’s mother, including performances

by Wainwright, her brother Rufus,

father Loudon Wainwright III, aunt Anna McGarrigle, and other guests.

“I’m on a kind of a journey of my own with some songs in French, some of Kate’s songs – that kind of thing,” she says.

She has written her own material since her late teens, but also covers the work of people like Leonard Cohen and Edith Piaf. Her cover choices are often brought to her by people who think she can bring something to a song.

“I listen to what they want me to sing, and if I like it then I’ll sing it,” she says.

In the past, her mother made a lot of suggestions about her cover repertoire and she misses that input. Older brother Rufus, with whom she started her stage career as a back-up singer, has also been

tremendously influential.

“I’m attracted by the words, the melody – I have a very eclectic taste and a very eclectic sound that sometimes makes it difficult to market and to sell as an artist – to not be very definable,” says Wainwright. “It’s certainly been maybe not the best business choice, but I just can’t help it. I was so influenced by so many different kinds of music growing up.

Then when I got older I listened to punk rock and edgier music, and I just can’t seem to throw any of those influences away, so I move through them like a bit of a chameleon.

“I hope that the string that’s keeping it all together is my voice and my style of singing, which is quite definitive.”

Marriage, the birth of her son

and the loss of her mother have put her in a different headspace during the last couple of years.

She feels that her work has matured, but that her style has remained the same.

“It’s usually a little bit subversive, very exposed… uncomfortable, but revealing in an interesting way that people can identify with,” she says.

Come Home to Mama is mostly her own material, but takes its name from a line in “Proserpina,” the last song her mother wrote, based on the Roman myth of Proserpina, who was kidnapped by Pluto and carried off to the underworld. Her partial restoration to the surface world is said to cause the coming of spring and her return to Hades ushers in the fall.

Wainwright and her small travelling band, including her husband, Brad Albetta, on bass, will play the Yukon Arts Centre on November 4 and the Odd Fellows Hall on November 5.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

The Story of the Château Jomini Where a living complex meets the test of time in central Yukon

C

hâteau is the French word for castle, a word that evokes images of tall stone towers, wooden drawbridges, the European countryside, and maybe even brave knights on white horses.

If you visit the town of Faro however, that word will evoke something different. The Château Jomini stands proudly overlooking the valley on Kitza Avenue, just across from the visitor centre.

The Château is a complex of four buildings, three stories high, all connected by a walkway and built by the Cyprus Anvil Mining Company to house a whole bunch of single guys – workers employed at the mine.

Jim McLachlan, long time resident and operation manager for the Town of Faro, remembers well the evolution of the building.

“The building was constructed in the summer of 1976,” he says.

“This date is absolutely fixed in my mind as very precise because I remember the pile drivers working up until 10:30 or 11 o’clock at night.“ On the original blueprints the building was simply called the Single Men’s Residence Complex.

It was later renamed after Harry Jomini, a civil engineer with the mining company. He was well known for his strong management skills and for completing projects on time and on budget.

The 2x4 wood frame structure includes three wings and a recreation building where the communal rooms were kept accessible to all residents. These rooms included the kitchen, the main dining room and a smaller private dining room for intimate meals. Men could also enjoy leisure time in the common lounges or spend time playing darts in the basement recreation room.

Each wing could accommodate more than 40 workers in single-occupancy bedrooms.

The guys were in the fortunate situation of only having one person to blame if the toilet got clogged, because each miner shared a bathroom with only one other guy. Each fellow would share the facilities with his nextdoor neighbour via a common commode, which was only accessible from the inside of both bedrooms.

In 1984, the building met its current fate, bathrooms and all.

The building was closed because Cyprus Anvil was looking to reduce operational costs.

At that time, the company was subsidizing the housing and the workers were paying only $2.75 per day for room and board in the Château Jomini.

Almost 30 years later the Château is still boarded up. At one point vandalism was a problem and plywood sheet were nailed to the window to prevent any additional damage.

The art class from the Del Van Gorder School painted the plywood with bright colours to match the original building colours. The result is an aging building that doesn’t look too neglected.

Vegetation is slowly reclaiming the yard, however. Wild strawberries, fireweed and willow shrubs grow happily on what was once the front and backyard. The remaining chain link fence can still be seen around the many entrances of the building and old car plugs can still be found.

The building was transferred to the Yukon Government when the mine started running into financial troubles, and many ideas have been brought to the table in an attempt to give it a second chance, but none have ever come to fruition.

Hopefully one day Faro’s castle will once again be full of wet Sorel boots in the entrance and laughter in the recreation room.

The Pups that Brought Chaos Back into My Life An accidental bundle of joy kick starts 14 years of dog mushing

I

t was the winter of 2011 and my aging pack of nine sled dogs had slowed down. The yard was quieter, life overall was no longer the chaotic craziness I had adapted to over the last 13 years of having my own small team.

The dogs had become increasingly content to just hang out in the cabin and relax and keep warm. A short walk here, a longer walk or skijor there, add some dog cookies or frozen fish to the mix and they were completely satisfied.

I adjusted to this new norm quite quickly.

The extent of our running at that time was hooking up a couple of my old reliable 11-year-old “youngsters” who still loved skijoring for a few miles with me.

They were super-calm and waited patiently if I fell, they rarely screeched and never ever dragged me into trees or onto sketchy trails. It was bliss.

But excitement was also one of the draws that brought me to the sport. I loved the chaos of some runs and I got adrenaline highs

when we had a great run, went down a steep hill or chased other teams in races.

Fast forward to June 2012.

Four new squiggly, furry beings came into my life.

The breeding was not planned, daddy just wanted a good time one night. He jumped a few gates and 10-foot high fencing to get to the little lady in heat.

I’d never had an accidental breeding and I never wanted too many dogs (14 was enough at my highest count).

So I thought long and hard about whether I wanted to keep these guys, and realized that I really missed training and running dogs. I missed getting out there regularly, just going out and exploring with the dogs. Not knowing where you were going, or how far was one of the joys I got from running dogs.

I missed having a team come together and work as one. I missed seeing the joy and excitement on the dogs’ faces when hooking them up, and the quiet that fol-

And most of all I missed the excitement, the high I got.

So, I decided to keep the little guys. I knew this decision was approximately a 14year commitment, but what the heck. You only live once and I’m not going anywhere.

I (by that, I mean we) still have a lot of the Yukon to explore.

Now, it must be told that the mother and father are not known as the greatest sled dogs, but they are without a doubt a couple of the happiest, most fun and hyper dogs I’ve ever had.

However, instead of looking at them as

mentally stunted, I prefer to look at them as always enjoying life. They get the most out of every day by having fun and maintaining a happy demeanour all the time.

Sure, they may run into walls, each other and me (repeatedly), they may get their heads stuck in dog cookie containers and walk around like an astronaut until someone notices, they may feast on frozen poo and throw it around like a toy, but they are my happy and simple dogs.

As the due date for the pups approached, I got more excited and giddy. I have to admit, I was nervous too: how would my life change? How would the other dogs react to

The doubt set in, until these little bundles of joy arrived. And that’s when I knew it was going to be one heck of a ride.

And you know what? All four of them are awesome. In their own ways of course – yes, a couple take after mom and dad, but the other two are so on top of things and so in tune with me that I have found myself questioning their lineage a few times.

For the record, no other dogs were upset/hurt in the making of these little beings. Sure, the old guys are sometimes annoyed by them, ok, they are often annoyed

by them, but the pups now have manners thanks to the old farts.

This winter is going to be an exciting ride, as we work on training these young guys. We’ll be navigating through the entertaining and rewarding process of harness-training with the goal of entering a few of the local races later this winter.

Stacie Zaychuk lives up the Alaska highway with a small pack of dogs and spends her free time exploring the woods, running dogs and cleaning up dog fur.

They pull an ATV, which is fantastic for training young dogs who have a tendency to get tangled. The heavy ATV holds the strong team when stopped.
