The Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. James in northwestern Spain

L

ast night I watched episode 1 of the Sopranos, the mafia-family television series that became hugely popular at the turn of the century.

It was fun, funny, violent, and vulgar; and I liked it a lot.

I haven’t watched The Sopranos before, but it’s often cited as instgating “the television revolution”, wherein television began catching up to, and then surpassing films, as the “western world’s” primary audio-visual art form.

Given that it holds such a reputation among so many people I respect, I have decided to make watching the entire series of The Sopranos my goal for the winter.

When I finish it I will start on Twin Peaks.

Here’s the odd thing: phenomenologically speaking, I feel like I am at the start of a great journey.

In other words, being where I am in The Sopranos (ready to start episode 2 of 86) induces a similar feeling in me as that of being at the beginning of a long adventure, like walking the Camino de Santiago, for example.

The Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. James in northwestern Spain, typically begins in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France and ends in Santiago de Compestela, Spain — some 770 kilometres away.

Pilgrims usually take just over a month to walk the route; Emilio Estevez made a cute little movie about the experience called The Way, in 2010.

One can’t be blamed for being incredulous that I would compare such a revered and spiritual trek to the watching of a television series. After all, one involves waking up and walking 25 kilometres daily, while the other involves finding a good butt-groove on the couch, preferably in close proximity to cheap carbohydrates.

And yet aspects of the analogy hold true: As I watched Tony Soprano, the mobster protagonist of the show, become attached to a family of ducks that landed in his private swimming pool, I began looking forward to understanding him further. When you start watching a

T.V. series, people and plotlines are all unrealized potential; you don’t know exactly what awaits you, but you know that you will become invested in the characters and their projects.

Similarly, when you start an epic quest, you are certain that adventures awaits you, but the details of the adventure remains elusive; it’s all unrealized potential. Thus, watching a T.V. show and taking a spiritual pilgrimage through Spain appear to have something in common after all.

And that this is the value of a good metaphor — placing two seemingly unconnected entities beside each other and allowing the commonalities to bubble to the surface.

Thus, those who are skilled at wielding metaphors are those that notice how objects in the world overlap and resonate with each other.

Understanding how metaphors work allows one to understand how the world hangs together.

Maybe your English teacher was right after all.

T

his is a love story.

On the morning of March 18 I found my coat and purse in a scattered pile on my bedroom floor. I reached in my purse for my phone; the back was cracked and when I turned it on, a message appeared on the screen: “missing SIM card”.

I checked the SIM slot, and sure enough, no card.

I shrugged.

St. Patrick’s Day in Halifax is a rowdy affair; I had no memory of how my phone came to lose its memory.

This was two years ago and I had already had my phone for two years at that point.

I lost my previous phone at a bar concert. I overheard a patron asking where he could find a payphone. I muttered, “payphones are obsolete”, and offered him my cell. He stepped outside to make

a call, and didn’t step back in.

I biked to the Mumford mall and bought a new phone, my current one, at a kiosk next to Club Monaco. It is a slide-phone with a push-button “qwerty” keyboard.

It is only my second cell phone, and when my friend Anna asked if it was a smart phone I said I didn’t know, but was secretly flattered she asked.

Now I know it’s the Neanderthal of smart phones. It could be a portal to the Internet, but I didn’t pay for data.

That was, until I had to think seriously about a journalism internship. When I talked to a representative at CBC Yukon, the first question she asked was whether or not I had a Twitter account.

I didn’t.

I thought I wouldn’t get the internship. I created a Twitter account and tweeted “dear @CBC-

North, this twitter’s for you”, and I bought a data plan for my phone (“Twittering from my phone; I am cyberspace, now”).

I got the internship. So easy.

My phone is probably 83 now, in modern technology years.

I later realized I didn’t need a data plan to be a journalist, and one night when I was at the bar, I read a group email from my mom.

She wrote to say our family dog had suddenly died. I got a new plan, without data.

My phone is probably 83 now, in modern technology years. It usually performs exactly as I need it to. Sometimes the keypad doesn’t work. When that happens, I don’t send text messages.

Once, after a particularly social weekend, I decided I needed some alone time. I didn’t get a single text message for two days. It was lonely, but I got what I wanted.

When my boss asked me why I hadn’t responded to all her text messages, I realized my phone had also decided I needed some virtual alone time, and stopped regaling me with text messages.

The absence lasted for 10 days.

I turned the volume up on my ringer, and started leaving my phone at home. It was a nostalgic time for me.

My phone appears to be working these days, but I’m leery of it — what is my phone keeping from me? And why?

I carry it with me more out of curiosity than functionality, now.

This is an obituary.

Being Prepared Is More Than Half The Battle T

he fire siren sounds every Wednesday evening at 7:30.

It’s not audible from everywhere in town, but the last town council held its meetings at 7 p.m. in the second floor chamber room on Wednesday, so discussions would come to a halt in mid-sentence until the siren’s wail ceased.

From the bays downstairs we would hear the rattle of the doors opening and, depending on the evening’s exercise, the rumble of one or more trucks leaving the building.

The men and women of the Dawson City Fire Department run a very smooth operation down there, and it’s the regular practice that makes it so.

Last week, from the last day of September until Friday afternoon, the department’s readiness was tested with a potentially dangerous situation, one that might have resulted in massive property loss and personal injury.

When a Ventures West LNG tanker missed its turn and flipped on its side at the entrance to the AFD fuel distribution site just east of the Ogilvie Bridge, Dawson’s Emergency Response Action Plan was activated very quickly, with the RCMP and the fire department making a rapid assessment of the situation.

“If you’re going to put an exercise together that would be the worst-case scenario of a tanker wiping out, that was it in terms of location,” said fire chief Jim Regimbal.

And, guess what? A similar scenario was tested in November 2010.

Operation Fireball was set up to test the Incident Command System, an organizational strategy for emergency response.

In the scenario, it was December 5 during a normal Dawson winter with a temperature of -17°C and darkness well settled in, when a van and a tanker truck collided in the middle of the bridge. Snow had been coming down all day, and 10 centimetres had accumulated.

No one knew what was in the tanker, but it was on fire and the driver was slumped unconscious over the wheel. All identifying marks were either melted or obscured.

In the real event, there were fewer unknowns.

The driver was uninjured and was also trained in emergency response techniques. The contents were known and the soft roll over did not rupture the tanker.

The accident wasn’t actually on the bridge, but if that LNG tanker had exploded, it would have set off the huge storage tanks on the property and almost certainly leveled most everything for about a kilometre in every direction.

That would have included the Northern Superior/Advance North operation, the Bonanza Gold Hotel and RV Park, the Dawson City Gas and Tire station and RV Park across the highway, and the bridge.

In any dangerous situation, it’s good to have a plan So it was important to handle everything with care and precision.

LNG experts were brought in, and a combination of fire department and YG highway workers were drafted to handle the situation.

The hotel lost several days worth of customers; other businesses had to be shut down on the day the tanker was righted and drained; The highway was closed and traffic was restricted for several hours on the last day of the event.

But no one got hurt and there was no massive property damage.

Some of that can be credited to luck, but a great deal of the credit goes to the emergency response plan and the people who followed it.

Yukon Film Society celebrates 30 years documentary.

Picturing a People is veteran Tlingit filmmaker Carol Geddes’ 1997 tribute to pioneer Teslin photographer George Johnson, who not only drove the town’s first automobile but also superbly captured the changing vista of the town’s history in the aftermath of the Alaska Highway’s construction in 1942.

Passage, from documentarian John Walker, is a historic portrayal that is as timely as today’s headlines. With the recent rediscovery of Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin’s ship Erebus in the waters of Hudson’s Bay, national attention has been focused on the failed 19th century expedition.

t’s hard to believe the Yukon Film Society (YFS) is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Started in 1984 with a handful of volunteers, it has maintained a reputation for showing quality independent and alternative films. Its appreciative and loyal audience has continued to grow over the years.

To mark the occasion, the society has scheduled a film festival for the weekend of October 24 to 26 at the Yukon Arts Centre. The YFS Kitchen Party is a retrospective of Canadian cinema, from 1989 to the present day, and features 14 films over the festival’s three days.

Some of the highlights include

director Bruce McDonald’s classic road movie Roadkill; filmed in 1989, it’s the oldest movie on the bill. Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, will also be shown. It’s Nunavut director Zacharias Kunuk’s epic 2001 portrayal of a mythic aboriginal struggle between the forces of good and evil. Set in the high Arctic, Kunuk’s effort was hailed as a breakthrough for Inuit filmmaking, and won the Best Canadian Feature award at the 2001 Toronto International Film Festival. It was also voted Best Canadian Film of the Decade by Maclean’s magazine.

CBQM is another Northern film.

It’s a documentary that tells the tale of a community radio station

with a lot of heart, in Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories. It’s directed by filmmaker and musician Dennis Allen, a longtime NWT resident who now lives in Whitehorse.

Rounding out the Kitchen Party’s Northern fare are Being Caribou, Picturing a People, and Passage.

Being Caribou is a brilliant collaboration between filmmakers Leanne Alison and Karsten Heuer, which traces the 1500-kilometer journey of the Porcupine Caribou herd to their calving grounds in Alaska. The pair followed them on foot, living among the herd and capturing epic footage along the way in this superbly photographed

New Waterford Girl, is about a small town teen fighting conformity

N

ew Waterford Girl, playing at the Yukon Arts Centre on October 24, is a film about juggling tradition and modernity. Living in a small and extremely tight-knit community, being normal is the only way to have any privacy; anything outof-the-ordinary is scrutinized in a giant game of Chinese whispers.

All Mooney Pottie’s (Liane Balaban) parents want her to do is be normal — to go to church and school and not ask too many questions. But Mooney isn’t “normal”; she’s exceptional, she’s artistic, she questions the world around her. As a result, her parents take her to the doctor for medicine to subdue her passion, which they interpret as mental instability.

When a young girl from the Bronx, New York, moves in next door to her, she and Mooney become fast friends (being the only two unique people in this “normal” Cape Breton town).

Having grown up in a strict Catholic atmosphere, Mooney is surprised by the bold, freespirited, take-no-crap attitude that her new neighbour has toward boys. Mooney also discovers her wieldable power over the opposite sex, but she isn’t just craving attention from boys. She

uses this newfound power as a red herring in order to find something greater: a way out.

Her father (Nicolas Campbell) sums up the local attitude nicely when Mooney announces she has been awarded a scholarship to attend an arts-based high school in New York, saying: “Now you listen to me, we all had dreams ya know. All of us.

What do you think, we just woke up one morning and there was five kids dere?”

It’s the vented frustrations of a Catholic man who has five children because he was forbidden to use birth control; hence Mooney has no bedroom and sleeps in the hallway.

Catholicism is a huge theme in this film. Young men and women who are taught nothing about sexuality and reproduction, consequently impregnate or become pregnant when their natural curiosities inevitably get the best of them. They are then taught to feel deeply ashamed of something they didn’t understood in the first place, and pregnant young women are sent away to Antigonish to be out of sight, and out of mind.

Upon birth, the child is given up for adoption (whether the young mother wants this or not) and the

girl is expected to return home as if nothing happened.

With the help of her new found modernist companion, Mooney finds a way to turn this traditional trap on its head. A muddy, foggy old town in eastern Canada, steeped in old school Catholic values, is the perfect backdrop for rebellion.

This is a story about breaking the mould, about the need to evolve.

Growing up on an island, the consistency of the Atlantic Ocean beating against it on all sides, creates a daunting moat to cross: physically and mentally. The modern world serenades her whilst tradition tugs at her heartstrings.

Wanderlust and passion coalesce in a young girl’s soul to concoct an “idea that is devious, sinful, and inspired”.

New Waterford Girl plays at the Yukon Arts Centre at 5:30 p.m. on October 24, as part of the Yukon Film Society’s Kitchen Party.

eath is a part of life, without death no one could live. Even vegetarians’ diets put an end to life. By eating a carrot, for example, there is no way for the veggie to naturally finishing its lifecycle, and produce seeds.

This may not seem like an end of a life, but it is.

To continue living, we must consume other forms of life. We can’t only be sustained by non-life forms such as minerals.

Most of us don’t talk about death much, but it’s part of life on the farm.

Every year, livestock is butchered for future use. This past week, we butchered our turkeys.

As in the past, I sent emails to those who had booked a turkey, inviting them to join us on butcher day. The answers ranged from those unavailable due to work or travel, to those who could not help with this sort of work, to those who were looking forward to helping.

PHOTO: Alison Steward for everyone. Growing up on the farm on chicken-butchering day, my mother and I did the killing and plucking. My sister joined us to help eviscerate the birds. Killing with respect for the animal being killed isn’t always easy. But every year hunters do this when they go out for their yearly moose or bison. So it isn’t much of a stretch for farmers to do this as well.

The strange thing is, most modern farmers no longer do their own butchering. Farms have grown too large for on-site butchering. Now an animal is trucked to the auction barn, where it is bought and sent to an abattoir. Here it is killed, cut up, and packaged for sale.

Sometimes the killing happens in one place, and the cutting and wrapping in another; sometimes these places aren’t even in the same province. In such cases the farmer receives a cheque for the animal and the reality of death is no longer experienced. The person who buys the animal, or a cut-and-wrapped portion of it, never sees is alive, and is only

This distancing of ourselves from our food source makes us numb to certain realities.

In the Yukon we only have mobile abattoirs; the death of the animal takes place on the farm where it was raised, and the farmer is still involved. The meat is kept local and we have a shorter food chain. We also maintain some of the skills it takes to be more self-reliant. Being as isolated as we are from the rest of the planet, self-reliance is also part of life.

Cowboy/Camp Coffee A little research shows me that “camp coffee” and “cowboy coffee” are the same thing, but maybe originated in different locations.

Basically, each involves a fire, a pot, some water, and some ground coffee. Even the more intricate efforts involve these basic items. Most people who enjoy this type of brew like it for the flavour and the setting where it is enjoyed.

Often, sippers of lattes, Americanos, and cappuccinos are delightfully impressed with the rich, full-bodied flavour of camp coffee.

The fire needs to be not-too-raging, and the pot can be any cooking vessel, including a coffee can with two holes on opposite sides of the rim, wherein a piece of wire looped above the can is inserted, forming a handle, or, as it is often called, “a bail”. A lid is not essential for the preparation, but is handy to keep the brew hot afterwards.

Some recipes call for the coffee to be put into the pot and cold water added and brought to a boil, but the most common routine is to add the ground coffee to water at a rolling boil. The heat should be reduced (by moving the pot) after the coffee (coarse ground, 3 to 5 strength level) has been added to the water-filled pot. The ratio of coffee to water depends on your preference, but for a start, three or four rounded tablespoons (some

fire because heat will just reactivate the boil and keep the grounds in suspension. This can be encouraged by swinging the pot in a circle (by holding the handle), allowing centrifugal force to cause the settling. Egg-shell added to the brew will cause the grounds to settle, as well, but the most common method is to add a cup of cold water to the mixture to cause the settling.

This coffee is not “good to the last drop,” because there will be grounds in the last mouthful from the cup, as well as the last cup from the Cheddar Tomato pot.

Varietease and the Guild Theatre team up for a double helping of Halloween hell-raising

on’t say you haven’t been warned.

From October 28 to November 1, the Guild Hall will be chockablock with fire, brimstone, and all kinds of devilish mayhem.

In addition to its annual Haunted House fright-fest, this year the Guild is joining forces with the Varietease burlesque troupe to co-produce a music-and-dance extravaganza that’s too hot for anyone less than 19 years of age.

“Come with a sparkle in your eye and an open mind, because we’re going to push your buttons, that’s for sure,” advises Kate Fitzgerald, one of three choreographers for Hotter than Hell, the fifth edition of Varietease.

But don’t expect pole-dancing, lap-dancing or a full-frontal strip show. That’s not what this burlesque-vaudeville show is all about.

“Straight-up burlesque isn’t just stripping,” explains director Brian Fidler. “It’s partly stripping, but without revealing everything.

What you don’t reveal is part of the sexy.”

Vaudeville, on the other hand, is a populist kind of theatre, with lots of humour.

“We kind of mash the two together,” Fidler says. “Other burlesque is often a bit grittier than ours. We’re a little more on the vaudeville side, I think.”

Patrons are encouraged to dress up for the occasion — after all, they are part of the mise-en-scène.

“The audience is the newly dead, and we’re putting on a show for them. Welcome to hell,” Fidler says.

As Fitzgerald outlines the premise, each of the performers has his or her own character and backstory.

“We’re in hell, which means we didn’t lead the greatest life, and we’re stuck doing this variety show every single night. That’s our punishment. The idea is that you’re watching a sort of sexy, quirky vaudeville act.”

The mistress of ceremonies is a dominatrix-type, played by Claire Ness, who also hosted the last Varietease show in 2012.

“She’s the one who ties it all together for us,” Fidler says. “She’s the boss and this is her troupe.

“She’s working for the devil.

Maybe she is the devil. We’re kind of playing with those layers as well.”

Fidler has been with Varietease from its beginnings in 2008, when producer-performer Fiona Solon invited him on board.

“We went into it blind. Initially, I said I know nothing about burlesque and I’m probably not the right person for the job,” he says.

“Fiona said, ‘Well I don’t really know much either, but let’s just try it out.’”

As a director, Fidler tries to bring humour to his projects.

“I think people want to see beautiful bodies, but they also want to see bodies of all different sizes and type. And they also want to have humour with it.”

With more dance numbers than in previous years, Fitzgerald is sharing choreography duties with Becky Reynolds (who will also be performing) and Michelle Fisher.

Other performers include Roxanne Stasyszyn, Harmony Hunter, Jessica Garstin, Jenny Duncombe, Kyle McDonald and Allyn Walton.

Music will be provided by a live ensemble of local musicians, under the direction of Paul Bergman.

In a show where the performers have been encouraged to contribute their own characters and stories, there has been no shortage of

ideas, according to Fitzgerald.

“We had a rehearsal recently where we were trying to come up with a story within one of the dances, and the ideas were flying,” she says.

“At one point I had to stop everybody and say, ‘Look, guys, this is a three-minute dance, and we just came up with enough material to do a two-hour show.’”

Fitzgerald is an experienced dancer and choreographer who moved to Whitehorse in 2012 — too late to see the previous Varietease show. This year, she became artistic director of the Northern Lights School of Dance.

Although she has performed with numerous commercial dance companies in the Toronto area, this is her first time working in a burlesque troupe, or with someone who takes such a collaborative approach to directing.

“Sometimes it can be a little bit challenging for me, coming from a dancer world, where you’re often just told what to do,” she admits.

“Like, ‘Okay, you’re the dancer.

You need to do this.’ Brian never does that.”

numbers, Fidler will also be contributing a non-musical sketch of his own.

“Brian’s got a dirty puppet show, which is hilarious,” Fitzgerald says.

“People like the dirty,” Fidler suggests, before adding his own cheeky wish for the show.

“I hope maybe there’s a wave of babies nine months from now. Varietease babies. That would be our legacy,” he laughs.

Hotter than Hell runs nightly at the Guild Hall from Tuesday, October 28 through Sunday, November 1. Curtain time is 9:00 p.m. There will be additional midnight shows on the last two nights.

Admittance will be restricted to those 19 years of age and over.

Tickets at $25 are available at Dean’s Strings.

The Guild’s Haunted House will run from 5-8 p.m. the same evenings. It is not recommended for children under 13 years of age.

Dream Of the Arts As An Economic Engine For Dawson City Greg Hakonson, Visionary

he way Greg Hakonson tells it, the Dawson City Arts Society (DCAS) had its beginnings in a chance encounter with his across-the-street neighbor, artist John Steins.

“We started chatting, and decided we should build an arts society,” Hakonson says. “He was coming at it from the arts side, and I was coming at it from the economy side.”

A long-time alluvial gold miner and accomplished wood carver who claims he merely dabbles in the arts, Hakonson became head of the new society and began actively promoting his dream of the arts as a way to bolster the town’s economy.

“He’s just a visionary,” filmmaker Dan Sokolowski says of Hakonson.

“The best thing that Greg always says is ‘Why not?’ You say, ‘Let’s let’s build an art school,’ and people would say, ‘Well, why?’ Greg would say, ‘Why not?’”

Klondike Sun editor Dan Davidson offers a similar view.

“His is a mind that’s always busy, always coming up with things,” Davidson says.

“He’s always in somewhat of a hurry, but he does inspire people. He plants seeds, basically, and then tries to get other people to take over the care of the garden.”

Hakonson himself says he likes to focus on what’s possible.

“I like to think about what would happen if we achieved something great, realizing that quite often you won’t make it. But even if you get halfway there, you’re probably doing pretty good.”

Part of Hakonson’s vision traces back to his boyhood days in and around Dawson’s abandoned heritage buildings

that were “full of all their contents and just locked up and left,” he says.

“We played in those buildings with all the stuff that was in them, and became quite attached.”

One building that held particular memories was the historic Odd Fellows Hall on Second Avenue. By the time the DCAS got started, it was owned by the Klondike Visitors Association (KVA), which had done little to the building beyond stabilizing the foundation.

“They had no vision or money to do anything with it,” Hakonson says.

“So we went and talked to them and said, ‘Well, we have a vision, and we think we can get the money. Would you be willing to contribute the building?’”

The KVA agreed to a dollar-a-year lease until the society was in a position to take over.

“We realized that nobody is going to put that kind of money into arts,” Hakonson admits. “Eighty per cent of Canadians are interested in sports, but only 20 in the arts.

So, she’s a tough sell at the best of times.”

After studying the economic benefits of having arts in a community, the DCAS developed a sales pitch “heavily weighed to our work being more about creating a new economic engine,” he says.

Within two years, the society had raised $800,000, including a grant from the territorial Community Development Fund. In autumn 1999, the refurbished building opened as the home of the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture.

But that was just the first step for Hakonson and the DCAS.

“The bigger picture goal was to create a four-year degree-granting university, a fine arts university. We strategized and envisioned that that would be the vehicle for expanding into these heritage buildings.”

During a pancake breakfast he and his wife, Shelley, hosted, Hakonson laid out the society’s case to then-Premier Dennis Fentie and Klondike MLA Peter Jenkins.

A typical hardrock mine in the territory employs about 300 people, has an average lifespan of 10 years, and costs millions of taxpayer dollar to get established.

A four-year degree-granting university would attract a similar number of students and teachers to the community, and would last indefinitely.

“And we said, ‘It won’t take millions and millions to get this thing going. We just need that building and some money to renovate it, and we’ll make a start at it,’” Hakonson told Fentie, who agreed.

In 2004, the KIAC School of Visual Arts (SOVA) opened in a 7,500-square-foot government building that had served a multitude of purposes over the years, had been condemned several times, and was slated for demolition.

As he had done with the Odd Fellows Hall, Hakonson himself designed and took charge of the restoration.

The school has since been renamed Yukon SOVA, and operates through a partnership of DCAS, Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation and Yukon College.

As an accredited arts college, it allows students in various disciplines to complete their first year toward a bachelor’s degree, which they can then pursue at one of several degree-granting institutions elsewhere in Canada.

After 12 years at the helm, fearing it might become “the Greg Hakonson Society of the Arts”, Hakonson decided to step aside from the DCAS. “He likes to get things started, then he likes to get out of the way. But he likes to keep an eye on the things that are his dream,” Davidson says.

As for Hakonson’s bigger dream of adding an arts leg to what Davidson calls Dawson’s economic “tripod” of mining, tourism and government, the editor offers a candid assessment.

“You’d have to say that it wouldn’t be anywhere near what it is now without Greg’s influence.”

f you simply put pen to paper and write down who you want to inherit your property, have you created a legally binding will?

Maybe. Maybe not. It depends on where you live.

Handwritten, unwitnessed wills — also called holographic wills — are valid in the Yukon as well as some of the provinces. One of the more famous examples of a holographic will comes from Saskatchewan, where in 1948, Cecil George Harris became trapped under his tractor and, near death, carved the following words into its bumper: “In case I die in this mess, I leave all to the wife. Cecil Geo Harris.”

The bumper was removed, brought to court and determined to be a valid holographic will.

However, not all Canadian jurisdictions recognize such wills.

In about half our provinces, including British Columbia, holographic wills are not valid.

Beyond jurisdictional issues, other problems commonly arise with holographic wills.

f you’re in your mid-thirties like I am, you may remember watching one of your parents playing Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo.

Back the ‘80s, controlling Mario was so intense that most moms and dads whipped the controller up in frantic excitement every time Mario jumped.

Back then they just didn’t get it.

Today, these same parents are busy trading lives on Candy Crush and building Farmville dynasties on iPads; video games finally have a home for every generation; it’s not just pimply-faced teens and lonely twenty-somethings anymore. Thanks to social media and online play, gaming isn’t big business, it’s huge business.

Before I espouse the virtues of video games, let me say I firmly believe that everything is great, in moderation.

As much as I love gaming, I also love to read, watch movies, and go outdoors.

Hunting zombies, playing a God, or whatever your fantasy vice is, is awesome but it’s okay to put the controller down and take a break if you feel like your eyes are about to burst out of your skull.

I have a soft spot for video games because I grew up with them, starting with the Atari 2600 when I was six. The games back then were no more than lights that flickered and moved, but it was spectacular.

I was 12 in 1989 when I got into a ridiculous daylong Mario Bros. challenge with my dad; if I beat him, he would take me to see Batman. Little did I know he was secretly playing late at the night. I made one mistake and lost, causing me to have a classic 12-yearold meltdown of utter disbelief.

Dad just wanted the credit for beating his son at his own game.

He accomplished it and I still saw Batman.

New Super Mario Bros. is a great way to pass the time Good times.

Arcades were great to play while growing up; I love the feel, sound, and lighting of a full-size arcade machine. To this day I have a hard time not playing an arcade machine if I see one in a restaurant or bar, and I still play them online.

Like a classic movie, a great

game will transcend the ages, regardless of their graphics. I‘m talking to you, Dig Dug. When the Nintendo Wii was introduced in 2006 with its motion controller, everyone suddenly became a casual gamer. It was great family fun to bowl or play tennis on T.V. It was also the first console in which people claimed they

could burn calories while gaming.

The Nintendo Wii brought my fondest memories of gaming; I would play Tiger Woods Golf with dad at Pebble Beach, have a few a beers, and never have to leave the house.

Today, I live in Old Crow and it’s getting close to winter, so my go-to game is New Super Mario

Thanks to social media and online play, gaming isn’t big business, it ’s huge business.

Bros. on the Wii U. Six people can play at once, but I often spend my evenings playing with my wife; We share intimate moments over who’s going to get the “squirrel suit”.

I’ve also been engaged in some intense online Mario Kart 8 action with my Yukon homies every Sunday night.

The fun never stops, especially when you’re tossing a red shell at your friends, sending them into oblivion.

Part 2 of 2

O

nline dating was all a bit awkward at first, sticking my neck out, exposing vulnerabilities to strangers over the Internet. Even so, email is a convenient, no-pressure way to communicate basic compatibility.

Although, I quickly find myself wishing I could meet my correspondent, and talk in-person, to

figure out if we share a compatible foundation of interests and values on which to build a serious relationship.

But, if the email contact seems promising, then we go for coffee or a walk. And if that goes well, we go for a hike or a paddle, or one of us invites the other over for supper.

Is there a spark?

Some of my messages to women on the dating site go unanswered.

Okay, no loss. I’m looking for someone who understands basic courtesy.

Some of my messages elicit a “thanks, but I don’t see a possible match” reply, and that’s okay.

Some women initiate contact with me; that’s exciting, but I have replied to these with my own “no thanks” messages, crafted, as sensitively as possible, when it’s clear our values and interests aren’t even close.

Am I being too hasty?

An unexpected benefit of my What’s Up articles was one woman herself, and the matchmaking friend of another, contacted me to explore the possibilities of getting to know me better.

I have also established more than transitory contact with several women through the dating site.

I’m not the sort of person who tries to run parallel relationships, playing one woman off against another to select an eventual “winner”, and there’s no looming deadline here. Instead, I’m exploring the possibilities with one woman at a time.

All the women I have met as a result of this exercise have been at least nice. One woman quizzed me like a job interview about what my last ten girlfriends would say was my biggest weakness. I guess I didn’t get the job because remembering my last ten girlfriends required going back decades.

I met a woman through the dating site who I liked very much, and we shared many common interests. My online profile clearly said I was looking for a relationship while hers said she was looking for friendship. Given that she had contacted me first, I assumed that she was looking for friendship that could possibly blossom into a relationship. But no, to my great disappointment, she really wasn’t looking for the same long-term commitment I was.

At least we were honest and trusted each other enough to talk about it, but that took a while to figure out.

We remain “just friends”.

A third woman was very enthusiastic about meeting me, and our profiles seemed to match, but there was just no spark. And a fourth decided that she wasn’t sufficiently over her last relationship to explore the next.

All the others, aside from a very small number in the to-bedetermined category, have been variations on these same themes.

Just a note about honesty: one woman I met in person bore only a superficial resemblance to her photo, which I assume was taken years ago. It wasn’t the woman’s actual appearance that bothered me; it was what I considered misrepresentation. I’m looking for a woman who is comfortable in her own skin; this is an emotional quality, not a physical attribute.

I understand that women my age have wrinkles and don’t resemble Barbie dolls. I’m interested in who they are today, not who they wistfully remember being in their youth.

So after months of searching through the small potential pool of Whitehorse online women, I have still not found anyone even as I near the end of the list. There is some Yukon turnover on the dating site, but not much.

One woman with whom I corresponded disappeared from two sites; I hope things worked out for her. The profiles of two new women meeting my search criteria have appeared, while those of potentially interesting women who never visit the site are still online.

So what to do?

Most of the women I have spoken with report that finding good men (online or anywhere) to be difficult. Perhaps concentrating Yukoners on one dating site (pof. com is free) would help. But there has to be a better way.

One of my correspondents noted previous generations held dances and socials so people could meet. Hey, I’ve been to barn dances at the Old Fire Hall.

They’re fun, but once I get past all the children, it’s hard to figure out who’s with a partner amidst the swirl of dancers.

Are there any age-specific activities in Whitehorse for the 50to-60 group? Do you have any ideas on other imaginative and low-pressure ways of getting unattached, mature, but active, Yukon adults together?
