het your appetite for lunch on Lillian Loponen’s new canvases at the Yukon College Hilltop Bistro this fall.

The show, called Touch of Green: Enchanted Places, explores the colour green in washes and gestural brushstrokes. The show will be on display at the College’s fine dining lunch restaurant until mid December.

Jacqueline Bedard, the Director of College Relations, explained that Culinary Arts Students at the College make the menu and prep and cook the food. The servers are drawn from students in the College’s Food and Beverage Operations program. These programs attract many international students, as it’s a field in which they can get employment. Often this includes a post-graduate work permit for the same amount of time they spent studying at Yukon College.

Certainly the menus often reflect international influences.

Followers of Loponen’s work will be familiar with her winter watercolours dominated by blue and violet. Loponen has shifted to green and to acrylic for these works. While there is one 5 foot by 7 foot winter canvas called “Enchanted Woods,” most of the scenes show summer.

In “Morning Silence” Lillian Loponen uses the acrylics thinly, drawing on her years of watercolour painting. create depth in “Enchanted Woods,” the warmer colour moving forward, creating more mystery for the wolf silhouette among the tree trunks. Both the trees and the wolf seem to be created by applying an opaque whitish colour to the negative space around the darker forms, with the darkness stained deeply into the canvas.

This work is flanked left and right by abstracts in green and blue. Here Loponen applies the paint thinly, like a watercolour wash. In one of these abstracts she creates leaf-like patterns by using Saran Wrap applied to the wet paint. This piece has figures in the foreground looking at a map. Like these figures, Loponen is exploring.

On either side of these abstracts, a pair of 5 inch by 7 inch canvases rounds out the symmetry. The size range in this show makes part of its interest and variety, spanning the range from 5 by 7 feet to 5 by 7 inches. Loponen uses the acrylic more thickly in these smaller pieces. Dark green tree forms are again defined by the light between them in the negative space. You can see her gestures in the paint. Mountains and hills appear in the layers through a screen of trees.

In these Loponen uses a range from thick to thin paint. A thinned whitewash veils the background, imitating rain. In the same way as rain, it greys out the landscape, creating depth by using atmospheric perspective.

To the right, “Silence of Green” uses the acrylic very thinly, its technique close to watercolour. It evokes a lake or pond. A bird flies through the upper part of the shoreline trees. The lighter area of the trees where the sun would hit is washed out, perhaps by taking paint away, to make their brightness.

Many plant species appear in this show. Berries, cattails and dwarf fireweed make an appearance among the green.

The Hilltop Bistro is open with seatings from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until mid-December.

From first rehearsal to the premiere, it has taken five years to put Eunoia together.

“The constraints seemed impossible,” says Fujiwara.

“We had to experiment a lot to find out how to make it work.”

The dancers also went through three years of voice training. Since there are times during the performance when they speak the words of the book, Fujiwara wanted their voices to sound strong, clear and have intention.

“They were specifically trained for this to work,” she says.

Fujiwara also mentions how proud she is that the team of six dancers, a choreographer, a videographer and the lighting director remained solid throughout those years.

“They were really committed,” she says. “We were all hooked on the challenge.”

n Friday, October 23, the Yukon Arts Centre will be presenting a multimedia experience that weaves together dance, video, music and costume. It’s called Eunoia and is based on Canadian poet Christian Bök’s book of the same name.

Denise Fujiwara, of Toronto-based Fujiwara Dance Inventions and a veteran of the Canadian contemporary dance scene, heard of the book after it won the Canadian Griffin Poetry Prize in 2002. She decided to adapt it to dance, but soon realized that she couldn’t be director, choreographer and performer all at the same time.

“The production was a big challenge. The piece is so complex, I couldn’t be inside and see the outside as well,” she says.

Eunoia comes from a Greek word that means well mind or beautiful thinking. It is also the shortest English word containing all five vowels.

In the book, each chapter is dedicated to a vowel and uses only words limited to that vowel. For example, Chapter A has words in it using only the vowel A. There are also thematic and other constraints in each chapter.

In keeping with the spirit of the book, Fujiwara decided to incorporate dance constraints as well. While performing Chapter A, dancers could only move body parts spelled with A, such as arms, jaw, calf, etc. The thematic con-

activities, allowing for free choice, including archery, Arctic Sports, Arctic Winter Games prep, writing games, firefighter for a night, sports activities in the school gym, a mini-med school, RCMP for a night, a geology workshop, yoga, Zumba, a jam session, vet for a night and paramedic for a night. There was also a dance on Friday night.

Dawson works well as a host for both of these programs, with instructional space available in the Robert Service School (for the REM) as well as the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, the Odd Fellows Hall, the Confluence Gallery at the Yukon School of Visual Arts, the Yukon Order of Pioneers Hall and several other possibilities.

It seems likely that more of these sessions will take place here in future.

tudents in rural schools can miss out on a number of things in terms of course offerings and opportunities. There are specialty programs in the city that attract a number of rural students to spend time in Whitehorse.

Our daughter, for instance, spent half of her Grade 11 year attending the Music Arts and Drama (MAD) program at the Wood Street Centre. Other Dawson students have done that, as well as taking in the Experiential Science program there.

The sheer number of students and the availability of facilities in the capital make it easier and more cost-effective to run those kinds of programs there.

But there are ways to overcome the rural deficit.

For the last 14 years, the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture has been running its Youth Art Enrichment program in early November. This is a week-long program focussed on developing skills in a number of art-related areas: drama, animation, painting, collage, carving and printmaking.

There are usually four intensive workshops, followed by a time to showcase all the work at the end of the week. Last year’s workshops involved 36 students from all over the territory.

Following this example, but with lots more funding and a focus on rural high schools, is the Rural Experiential Model (REM), which wrapped up its third fall session in Dawson in late September.

The plan is to bring rural high school students from Grades 10 through 12 together to participate in a range of activities that might not fit into their regular curriculum offerings.

The fall session is early enough

in the school year to include outdoor activities. A spring session happens late enough in May to offer the same possibilities.

This year 22 session leaders offered 13 daytime workshops.

These were Ancestral Technologies/On-the-Land; Archery & Coaching; Culinary Arts; Dance and Drama; First Nations Art (Design and Carving); Gold Rush (Past, Present, and Future); Hair and Esthetics; Mountain Biking: Riding and Repair; Robotics; Science: Let’s Do It!; Social Media; and Wood Shop (framing a building).

Yukon filmmaker Max Fraser’s new World War II documentary film premieres Oct. 27 at the YAC

I

n 1943 Operation Husky was put into motion. Canadian Soldiers travelled deep into the Sicilian countryside to fight against the Nazi presence that had been established there. More than 500 Canadian Soldiers lost their lives during the campaign in Sicily.

The cemetery in Agira, Sicily is not a well-known place to be visited in the remembrance of Canadian and Allied bravery, however, Yukon filmmaker Max Fraser is trying to change that with his new featurelength documentary film Bond of Strangers: The Operation Husky Story.

On July 10, 1943 Fraser’s father landed in Sicily along with the 1st Canadian Infantry Division. Seventy years later, Fraser and group of 10 others decided to do the same journey. Thus, in July of 2013 this film project was launched. I had a chance to sit down with Fraser and ask him about this emotional journey and the film.

Andrew Gilbutowicz: How did you first become interested in Operation Husky 1943 as a documentary subject?

Max Fraser: When I was little I learned that my dad had been in World War II. He didn’t talk much about it with his family, however, like most veterans. As an adult, I came to appreciate the true horror of war. Fast forward to 2006 and I went with my daughter, then in Grade 11, on a Battlefield Tour put on by the local high schools. The first time I stepped into a Canadian War Cemetery in Europe, I was overwhelmed. It was a deeply emotional experience. Around that time I started making short films. My wife Arlin

MF: Sicily is a lovely place, but this film shoot was quite grueling.

Like for the soldiers of World War II, we were there in the hottest month of the year – July. We stayed in only two different places where communications were good, but it meant we were separated from our characters and their journey, so we’d have to drive long distances at the start and end of each day to do the filming.

Three Ways to Use Life Insurance for Charitable Giving Many people are motivated to give to charities whose work is important to them.

Using life insurance solutions for charitable giving can be an effective strategy that can help you support registered charities of your choice.

There are various ways to use life insurance to donate to charity. Once a donation amount, percentage or range has been determined, the next step should consider how the gift can be structured to help achieve the objectives. Objectives often include consideration of the tax relief available by gifting now, gifting upon death or a combination of both.

Examples of how life insurance policies can be used for charitable giving include, but are not limited to, the following.

1.

Donating the policy to a charity during the lifetime. Ownership of the policy may be transferred to the registered charity, who must be the irrevocable beneficiary, while the donor is generally bound to pay all premiums due according to the policy terms. Each year the charity would issue a donation receipt for the total amount of premiums paid resulting in a continuing tax credit that may be used by the donor while living. Implementing this strategy, however, means that the estate will not receive a donation tax credit upon the insured’s death.

2.

Gifting all or some insurance proceeds by will. When proceeds are donated by will, the donor does not receive a tax credit for the premiums paid while living. The charity instead will issue a tax receipt upon the insured’s death equivalent to the amount of the donation made.

Naming a charity as a beneficiary of the life insurance. The form and timing of this strategy’s tax credit is similar to one received when making a donation by will. The difference is that a beneficiary designation allows the donor the flexibility to easily change the beneficiary designation should circumstances change. The charity receives its gift in a way that provides a clear line between the charitable gift and gifts for estate beneficiaries, which may minimize the opportunity for conflict.

These strategies help provide the opportunity for personalizing the timing of charitable receipts. Each strategy has different tax consequences. Donors should consult with their tax professional to determine the structure that best suits personal objectives.

Make sure you have a detailed discussion with your financial advisor about the different options that are available to assist you in making an informed decision. Together, with your accountant and lawyer, you can work toward implementing insurance solutions as part of your overall financial strategy.

Riffs through the Wilderness

Brenda Berezan released her second album last week

B

renda Berezan was an aspiring songwriter when she moved to the Yukon wilderness. Having taken a break from music to run a business and raise her family, she has recently returned to performing and recording. She’s now releasing her second album, called Blue Through the Trees. It’s an indiefolk album that veers away from her debut with the her band Free Radicals.

Berezan moved to the Yukon from Alberta in early 1999, drawn by its pristine environment. “It was just because of the wilderness that’s up here,” Berezan says.

“That was the big attraction. I lived off the grid for about eight years.”

While living in the bush, Berezan made a living publishing wilderness photography.

That communion with the Yukon’s nature is evident on the

album. The song “Canoe” is a drift through lakes, rivers and skies, a song of peace, love and fishing.

The title track, “Blue Through the Trees,” celebrates forests, clear skies and campfires.

But along with that love of nature comes a warning. Her song “Oilfields,” shows what could happen with indiscriminate development.

“That song was inspired by the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the drilling,” she says. “It’s about contamination of the Northern environment.

“In fact, Buffy Sainte-Marie has been one of my musical heroes forever. She’s never been afraid to sing what she feels in terms of issues or politics. So needless to say, my relatives in Alberta, I don’t know what they’ll think of that song.”

“She was kind of a gift to me from the Atlin Music Festival,” Berezan says. “The first time we met was when we were on the songwriting stage together, but she had seen my band play the day before. We hit it off, talking about having kids, because she’s married with a couple of toddlers. I kept in touch with her.”

Berezan met Gryner’s Trapper bandmate Sean Kelly in a similar way, meeting him through a music boot camp put on by Music Yukon and Coalition Music, who told her he’d be interested in playing guitar on her album. Kelly plays guitar on “Let’s Get Together.”

Berezan appreciates the kind of connections that are available to Yukon musicians.

“It’s neat living up here because sometimes you think you’re really isolated, then suddenly these gifts come to you – but they didn’t just come to me, I helped make them happen,” Berezan says.

The song “Valentine’s Day” is a duet with The Midnight Sons Band vocalist Alex Johnston. His voice, deep and rumbling, contrasts with Berezan’s, much like Paul Stephens’ heavy bass notes of the coda mixing with the tinkling, higher notes of Jordy Walker’s

Walker and Berezan co-produced the album to create a sound that’s distinct from her previous recordings.

“It’s definitely not a far-out, quirky album,” she says. “I wanted to make a departure from things I had been doing. Jordy made a lot of decisions, but I let him have free rein. I wanted to open up the door to new things. I think his signature is really heavy on the recording. But I was really hungry for that.

“I think had I made the recording with someone else, somewhere else, it would have made a good recording, but to me this is a much more interesting recording.”

Blue Through the Trees comes out October 15 and will be available at Mac’s Fireweed Books.

Watch for her CD release concert later this fall and her upcoming tour in the new year.

I

’ve been online shopping.

Specifically, I’ve been fixated on merino wool base layers on Amazon. Researching sizes, the best weave weight, which tops will work both as under and outer wear, what brands won’t pill. I’ve found some that are half price!

And in the seven days since I’ve been home I’ve already made four lengthy visits to Value Village, a.k.a. second-hand clothing paradise.

I’ve also gone to Costco, to Chapters, to Sears, to the giant new Canadian Tire, to the outdoor gear store, back to the outdoor gear store, to the army surplus.

A week ago I was shacked up in a powerless, waterless cabin 45 minutes from Whitehorse, reading a paperback I picked up at the freestore, wearing whatever else I had found at the freestore, listening to CBC 2 on a battery-powered radio. Now I’m living in a house with unlimited internet access 10 minutes from a chain store mecca.

Everything is suddenly everywhere – and everything is suddenly affordable.

Things like: winter socks, thick wool jackets, brown wide-brim wool rain hats, merino pullovers, insulated neoprene boots, fitted black jeans, most of these with price tags under $20.

I am surrounded by countless inexpensive versions of the exact material items that continually evaded my limited-income grasp in the Yukon.

I’m overwhelmed. I’m reverting to a former version of myself, one who had to set strict rules for herself to overcome her inclination to buy everything she saw and wanted.

But much as I’ve been totally taken by the land of plenty, there appears to be another force gripping my wallet and pulling everything out of it.

Winter.

I seem to have this idea that it is coming. Around the corner. I

mean, it snowed in the Yukon in August. The wood stove’s been running two months already. And I want to be warm this year. I want the expensive long johns that keep me toasty, I want a giant hood trimmed with fur. I might spend $50 on a merino tank top so that everything I wear can feel like a warm second skin made of wool.

Except, wait, it was 19 degrees and sunny today. Most of the clothes I brought with me from the Yukon I can’t even wear without sweating. The seasonal Dairy Queen is still open. The leaves on the trees are still green.

My mom picked me up from the airport in sandals. While trying

on a winter coat at Value Village the other day, a man walked past wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

I wake in the morning and pull thick tights over my legs, choose a long sweater to wear over an undershirt, throw on a jacket at the door as I leash my dog. I return from our walk stripped to the essential layers, drenched and sticky.

It’s like I just don’t get it. It’s kind of still summer here.

Three Cheers for Enthusiasts W e are a territory of enthusiasts. We dive in with total commitment, whatever our passion is — First Nations governance, yoga, politics, skiing, sledding, social justice, mining, conservation or coffee — and once the bit is between our teeth we don’t let go.

This makes for lively, often heated, sometimes acrimonious conversations — in the press, at General Assemblies, in cafes or the legislature or at the White Pass on a fine winter’s Saturday — but it also adds to the vitality and diversity that keeps us here, in this wild and crazy territory.

Last weekend, as I roamed the city of Whitehorse provisioning the larder, I was lucky enough to encounter three enthusiasts who have changed my life in small but important ways.

The first was James Maltby, coowner of The Woodcutters Blanket, the cocktail bar on Second Avenue where you know, with absolute certainty, that whatever you order will be superb. This is because Maltby won’t serve a cocktail until he’s sure he’s got the recipe exactly right.

While my companion and I sipped a superb Martinez (me) and an Old Fashioned (companion) Maltby chatted about his revised cocktail menu, coming soon. We were delighted to hear it will include a Sazerac, the famous New Orleans combination of cognac, rye, simple syrup and Peychaud’s bitters, served in a glass rinsed with absinthe. It’s going to be very cool to sample Maltby’s measured, well-researched take on this classic.

Somehow the conversation went from absinthe to aperitifs, and Maltby brought over two glasses, one filled with pale yellow, the other with deep caramelred liquid. This latter was Punt e Mes, an Italian bittersweet vermouth whose flavour starts off

two: the Felicidade, a blend of whites grown at Adega On 45th, a small vineyard near Osoyoos owned by a family with Portuguese roots; and a 2013 Sundial from Time Estate Winery near Oliver.

The jury’s out on the Felicidade — maybe a bit too syrupy for my palate, but I loved the Sundial — a balanced blend of cold-fermented Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, a blend that cried out, “Charcuterie platter!”

So I rode over to Cultured Fine Cheese in the Horwoods Mall, and there met the third enthusiast — well, third and fourth — who I know will change my life in small but important ways, the wife and husPHOTO: Miche Genest band team of Larra Daley and Stephan Biederman.

be a sunny day or even a rainy day if you’re a gardener. Perhaps it’s having a roof over your head or having people who care about you. Spend a couple moments each week to think back over the past seven days and list five things in your life that you are grateful for.

It turns out that the quickest way to make it better is to be grateful. Beyond being polite, researchers are finding that regularly saying thanks can improve optimism, life satisfaction, and overall well being.

In one study, researchers Emmons and McCullough(University of California 2003) randomly assigned participants one of three tasks in which they were asked to record weekly: • things for which they were grateful or thankful, • things that annoyed or bothered them, or • neutral events that had impacted them in some way.

Some were grateful for the Rolling Stones, while others were thankful for their friends. Hassles ranged from the poor driving skills of others to messy homes.

Although what they listed varied greatly, the effects were the same. Ten weeks later, those that spent some time each day count-

ing their blessings had rated their lives as better overall compared to participants in the other two groups.

Another study had more than 200 teenagers do a similar exercise and found similar results. Like the previous study, teens that had counted their blessings had greater life satisfaction and well being.

If you’re looking to improve your life, you can’t go wrong with gratitude. It’s inexpensive, easy to do, and something that you can do entirely on your own without needing to depend on anyone else. If you’re looking to begin your own practice of giving thanks, you could try one of the exercises relied on by researchers over the years.

Count your blessings This method was used extensively by Emmons and McCullough in their research. The premise is that in our lives, there are many things, both large and small, that we could feel thankful for. It could

D

awson City resident Debbie Winston has a love of making art with beads – including antique glass and china chickens.

A child of the sixties, Debbie first arrived in Whitehorse on July 1, 1967. She was traveling with her boyfriend. His father had paid her way – traveling in style on CP Air, Debbie remembers silverware and cloth napkins on the plane.

She met Margaret Ludwig, who was enamoured with the hippie culture of Haight Ashbury in San Francisco, so she was thrilled to meet Debbie, a recent arrival from Berkeley, California.

Debbie and Margaret became friends and Margaret introduced Debbie to beads. Debbie recalls spending hours beading with her

new friend.

Biddin, the ancient Anglo Saxon verb, means to pray. Bede is a noun meaning prayer.

Before glass was discovered, bead material included shells, pebbles, teeth and bone.

Glass beads probably originated in Venice in the 14th century. Murano Island, Venice has a thriving glassblowing tradition to this day. The Czech Republic also produces beads today – long tubes of glass cut and tumbled to make the tiny beads.

Beads are used in many cultures for spiritual practice as well as clothing decoration.

Glass beads had an important role in the colonization of the world. Spanish and Portuguese explorers used trade beads when meeting First Nation peoples in the New World, and Christopher

Columbus brought red hats and string beads to North America.

Couch thread embroidery is the European technique used to attach beads to clothing. It produces a flat embroidery more practical for leather and outdoor living.

Debbie’s beading technique is what I like to call free form.

In the Chinese culture beading is more three-dimensional; Debbie is inspired by this Chinese technique. She is always looking for bead patterns – whatever appeals to her, really. Anything can be covered with beads.

There are some interesting cultural connections found in Debbie’s bead research. Beading designs from South Africa and Greenland are similar, for example.

Debbie’s beading kit includes

strings of beads, Aileen’s Tacky Glue, a food baster and tiny tweezers.

After researching chicken breeds and plumage colour, she picks a chicken to cover in beads.

She begins by placing outline beads. These beads have been strung onto a thread in the colour sequence needed for the pattern. Over the years she has discovered just how long a string of beads needs to be to cover an outline design. Using the food baster, she spreads the glue in the shape wants. She lets the glue sit for a bit – it gets tacky but not completely dry. She then presses the beads gently into the glue. Then she pulls the thread out from the string of beads.

She is able to move the beads

at this stage to adjust the design. The tweezers come in handy for this part of the process. After the outline shape has dried, she fills in the design with more beads. The process takes days as she leaves a glued section to dry before adding more glue and beads.

I had a lot of fun meeting Debbie. She is such a positive person. Her love of life is really mirrored in her love of colourful beads and what can be done with them.

Frost to Frost... with Joan Norberg

Winter is Coming O

ver the past few years the gardens have been producing more and more vegetables. So, come fall we start to look for places to store the root crops for the winter.

Our main root crops are potatoes and carrots, which need a dark, cool space with a bit of humidity. We have been storing them in our water storage building under the stairs next to the water tank. The building is only 12’x12’ and the water tank is about 8’ in diameter, so there really isn’t much room for storage. And it is a bit of a squeeze to even get under the stairs. But it is insulated and the water tank helps to keep humidity in the air so they store fairly well there.

Last summer we had talked about extending the basement area of this building to allow for more root crop storage. But when the busy-ness of the summer eased off a bit we realized we could either finish harvesting the gardens or build the extended storage. We didn’t have time for both. So we harvested and stored things as best we could.

This year we planned it a bit better. We were able to borrow a backhoe from a friend. And Allan was able to dig the basement a little bit each day after the main work of the farm was done.

It probably took him two weeks to dig the hole, but once he was done so were the Thursday markets and we had time for some construction. The weather wasn’t all that cooperative, though, and so the pressure was still on to clear off the garden before everything froze.

Thankfully, most of the potatoes had sold throughout the summer so we would only had to store seed potatoes and carrots.

Finally we had a day that was clear and dry. We also had the materials and our son, Ben. With three of us we set up an assembly line. I was kept busy on the saw cutting materials to be used. Ben and Allan were in the hole constructing the walls.

Because we were extending the basement we only had to build three walls and attach them to the existing basement.

It sounds easier than it is. Each wall had to be built flat on the ground. So once one was done it had to be set aside while the others were built. Once all three were built they had to be attached first to the building and

As we were attaching the last corner the sun was setting. The day was done and so were we. It had taken us about nine hours to

construct the first part of the cold storage area. And we wouldn’t have been able to get that much done without Ben. We still have to finish the building, but because there are still vegetables out in

the garden it will have to wait.

And as we all know, winter is coming.

A good horror story doesn’t necessary need to be gory and hardcore horror fans probably wouldn’t classify Murakami’s masterpiece of magical realism as “scary.” Beginning with the disintegration of a marriage and a missing cat, at first Wind-up Bird seems pretty cut and dried – until things start to get weird. And then weirder. And then just plain messed up. What makes the novel frightening, however, is not the faceless shadowmen, psychic powers and Boris the Manskinner, but rather the overarching suggestion that the characters – and, by extension, the reader – are being manipulated by forces much larger and greater than themselves. If the idea that your free will is either cursory or – worse yet – utterly imaginary terrifies you, then Murakami’s most famous novel should be on your Hallowe’en reading list.

H.P. Lovecraft: The Complete Fiction

American Psycho

Destitute for most of his life and only recognized as a master of the genre after his death in 1937, Lovecraft wrote what has become known as cosmic horror.

His work is populated by snakefaced monsters, demonic sexual liaisons and nameless, unimaginable terrors and deities such as his most famous creation, Cthulu. However, the real horror he shows us is the fragility of order and sanity in the face of a chaotic and unfathomable universe which probably does not love us.

The story “The Colour from Outer Space” is a personal favourite; it is as uncanny and unsettling as it is badly named. Readers should be warned, however, that the works of H.P. Lovecraft sometimes contain extremely ethnophobic and racist sentiments and should be read as a product of their time.

Possibly one of the most disturbing works of fiction in the history of American literature, Ellis’ most famous novel depicts the macabre, cocaine-fuelled, gruesomely violent sexual escapades of Wall Street investment banker Patrick Bateman, who also just so happens to be a serial killer.

On one hand a deeply horrifying portrait of the inner workings of a disturbed human being and on the other a stark and equally unsettling commentary on consumer culture, Psycho is an unstoppable ride into a slasher-flick nightmare.

Many people are sure to have seen the movie, but the book is even more surreal and horrible; there is a scene involving a rat and a paper towel tube which is so awful it cannot be described in print in this publication. Not for the faint of heart.

Fine Wine Starts in the Garage Luigi Zanasi was taught how to make wine by his father and grandfather

T

here’s at least one person for whom the drought in California has a silver lining.

Luigi Zanasi is hoping for some magic to come out of his garage this year, thanks to the intense wine grapes he believes the California drought has produced.

An economist by profession, and an enthusiastic gardener, Zanasi has been making wine nearly every fall here in Yukon for more than 20 years. He has actually been making wine his whole life with his grandfather and father growing up in Montreal.

California grapes have been making their way to Italian centres around North America for generations.

“That’s been going on since Prohibition,” he says. “We Italians cannot live without one of our basic food groups.”

Zanasi’s wine starts in his garage, where the grapes are crushed and left to ferment in plastic barrels. After a few weeks of fermentation, the grapes are pressed and the liquid is transferred to glass bottles called carboys or demijohns, which are stored indoors.

They sit for a few months before bottling.

A batch of wine lasts about 10 years, and Zanasi makes wine nearly every year. He recalls 1996 as producing an exceptional wine.

“That was my best year, but it was excellent for most of the 90s.

Then the grapes – especially the Zinfandel – started going downhill.”

He theorizes that the growth in popularity of old vine Zinfandels means the grapes previously shipped to Italians across North America were now being retained for commercial wine making.

Make no mistake, Zanasi still drinks those commercially-produced wines.

“It’s good to drink other wine because otherwise you get used to your own. In order to keep an objective view of wines you have to keep trying different types, otherwise yours ends up being the best in the world and nothing else compares.”

This is apparently a common hazard among home winemakers.

“If you ever going into an Italian household you better pretend their wine is the best, otherwise it’s insulting,” Zanasi cautions.

Still, he laments that the variety that small scale winemaking represents is being lost.

“Because of worldwide commercialization, the taste of wines have been homogenized. A lot of really nice regional wines have disappeared and they all try to taste like Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon.”

The variety of grapes still exists, but many are not produced on a scale large enough for export, so one has to go to those regions of origin to taste them.

Zanasi believes Canada might be affected by this increasing uniformity.

“In my mind some really superb wines are the Rieslings from the Okanagan. But there’s not much of a demand for that because people want these big fruity reds.”

At approximately three to four dollars a bottle, cost is one reason Zanasi enjoys making his own wine.

He estimates making a minimum of 50 litres, or roughly six cases, of any kind of wine is cost effective over buying commercial wines.

“Even with a small quantity it won’t cost you more than $10 a bottle.”

Freight rates can vary, but comprise about a third of the cost.

For Zanasi, the satisfaction is in the process as well. He shares and enjoys the labour and the fruits with two other households.

“It’s a satisfying and a fun thing to get together and eat and drink while we’re doing it. It’s a harvest ritual. I figure it’s half a day crushing and another half day pressing and half day racking and half day bottling. After that, you have six or seven cases of wine.”

Wine is not all Zanasi makes. He also maintains a balsamic vinegar that connects him directly to his heritage.

“My grandfather had a barrel of wine go bad around 1918 or 1919 and we kept on adding wine to that barrel until 1972 or ‘73. Then, my father broke the barrel apart and kept the mother and my brother sent me a 5 litre carboy of it in the early ‘90s.

“We’ve been continuing to add wine to it, so now I’ve got vinegar that my grandfather started in Montreal that’s almost 100 years old.”

How do I know when to get NEW TIRES?

Every new tire comes with special humps in between the tread blocks known as the wear bars, these bars are used to indicate to the user that the tire has reached 2/32’s of an inch. 2/32’s is considered to be at the end of the tire’s useful life and can no longer safely grip the road, especially in rainy conditions where you will find the tire to likely experience a hydroplane condition.

Therefore if your tires have reached these wear bars your tires are no longer safe to operate and are in need of replacement.

Not Your Usual Ghost

I

had never believed in ghosts, but after that hot summer’s day in 1987, I could never be certain again.

The idea of a moaning, translucent, hovering ghost remains just the stuff of lazy Hollywood screenwriters. What I experienced was, well, I still don’t know. So I will let you, the reader, decide.

My wife and I would spend a week each summer at a cabin north of Havelock in Ontario’s Northern Shield. It was nature in the raw that allowed us to dust off city life and renew our humanity.

This particular summer, our hearts were heavy with concern for a favourite aunt: Aunt Marnie.

My mother first met her future sister-in-law decades earlier at a volleyball tournament. She was sweaty and skinned and yet still maintained a spark that fired her enthusiasm and passion for whatever adventure was at hand.

We all witnessed that spark as she gripped my Uncle Earl’s waist as they zipped about town on their Harley-Davidson motorcycle, or as she exulted at their latest discovery of an antique that would be

beautiful, once more, under her skilled hand.

But Aunt Marnie saved her most profound passion for her three children, her husband, nieces, nephews, co-workers, friends and all of their friends.

She always cooked more than enough for supper in case someone took advantage of the open invitation to dinner. No notice was necessary – not for family, or friends, or anybody.

It was likely her passion for life that kept her alive for so long with that insidious disease: lung cancer.

And yet…

So, my story begins: my wife and I finished up our annual vacation on that lake north of Have-

lock. We headed south to Highway 7 and signaled left to return to our home in Ottawa. If we had headed straight, we would get to Trenton, where Aunt Marnie and Uncle Earl lived. But we didn’t have time.

We had to join the rat race once again.

As we approached Highway 7, a wind rushed up the highway toward us from the other side. Yet no dust was whipped up, no leaves rustled. It was a hot still day, there was no reason for a wind.

It wasn’t a wind by any definition that makes sense. Indeed, none of our usual senses picked up on it. Yet my wife asked me, “What was that?”

We both agreed that “wind”

was the closest explanation we could come up with.

Three hours later, we were home and a message was waiting for me. My brother wanted me to phone him. Aunt Marnie had passed away.

Three hours ago.

Shock, grief, acceptance. But what about that wind? What did it mean?

We decided not to tell anyone about it. This was not the time.

After the funeral, as we helped put away chairs, Aunt Marnie’s son-in-law told me he was taking Uncle Earl in his bush plane to scatter her ashes.

She had pre-arranged everything: she wanted her ashes to be scattered in the Canadian Shield, just north of Havelock.

My kind reader, can you now see why a rational man, such as myself, could no longer scoff at the idea of ghosts?

We all have energy. Just because we cannot see it or touch it or understand it in any way we currently have, it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Aunt Marnie’s energy – or spirit, if you will – was rushing to the Canadian Shield ahead of her discarded body.

Taking the thought process one step further, her ghost did not want to scare us or steal our attention. It just wanted the peace it deserved. And as loving as Aunt Marnie was, it was not out of the question that her spirit would first wash over us ever so gently on its way home.
