The Midnight Sons Band present Ryan McNally and Jesse Roper Oct. 3 at the convention centre by Barry “Jack” Jenkins

T

he Midnight Sons Band is fresh off a tour and ready to rock. On Saturday, October 3, the band is presenting – and performing at – Rock the North, which is an all-ages dance at the Yukon Convention Centre featuring the rockabilly/psychobilly band Ryan McNally and his Red Hot Ramblers, and Victoria bluesman Jesse Roper. It’s an exciting time for The Midnight Sons singer/guitarist Alex Johnson, guitarist Daniel Stark and drummer Patrick Docherty. The trio has played festivals like SunFest Country Music Festival in Cowichan Valley, BC, and last month’s BreakOut West showcase in Victoria, making an impression on everyone who sees them, including Western Canadian Music Award winning producer, David J. Taylor. “At our last show, David Taylor said that he wanted to do an album with us next,” Alex Johnson says. “He said that we sounded like the band of next year. He thinks it’s awesome that we don’t have a bass player. He says Don’t get a bass, don’t mess your sound up.” The band occasionally hire a bass, when playing larger venues in order to fill out the sound. Along their tours, The Midnight Sons encountered Jesse Roper and immediately became fans. “We saw him first play in Victoria when we went down for the Road to SunFest,” Johnson says. “We saw him play and were like, ‘What the hell?’ It was something that we hadn’t seen before, that’s why we wanted to get him up here so badly.” Roper is a wild blues guitarist, his untamed mass of hair flying as he performs Hendrix-inspired riffs. It’s hard to believe that he

Yukon. He’s played Arts in the Park and the Sunstroke Music Festival, and more than that, he has a family connection. “My aunt and cousins live up there. It’s nice to go up there and spend some time with them in their natural habitat, see what it’s all about,” he says. “I’d live up there. If I wasn’t doing music, I’d live up there, I love it. “Hiking and biking. The first time I was up there, I borrowed my cousin’s bike. It was 24 hours of sun and I went mountain biking from 10 o’clock at night until 6 in the morning. It was one of the coolest experiences in my life.” It was while looking forward to a visit to the Yukon that he wrote the song “Yukon Girl.” “I had this song inside my head and I was thinking about going to the Yukon, and I thought, ‘I’ve got a lovely Yukon lady.’ I wasn’t sure where I was going to go with it. Just the idea of meeting a girl and having some fun together and she turns out to be a witch and tries to kill me. That’s the idea.” The Midnight Sons Band are thrilled to be presenting him again to a Yukon audience. Says Johnson, “He’s definitely export-ready. It’s awesome we get to see him before he gets too big.” Ryan McNally, PHOTO: courtesy of Jesse Roper Jesse Roper and The Midnight Sons Band perform at Rock the North on Oct. only gained enough confidence to perform in his late 20s. Roper admits, “I still get nervous before every show, it’s something that I battle with myself a little bit.” He’s the kind of artist that has to be seen live. While his skill shows on his songs and albums, it’s in live performances that he really comes alive. “I get that a lot,” Roper says. “It’s hard to simulate the same excitement as in the studio. It’s just different. I’m just so excited and happy when I’m playing on the stage.” Roper is no stranger to the

The Circus is in Town - Permanently

On the Cover

Yukon Circus Society will offer more stilt walking classes in the spring by Angela Szymczuk

C

irque du Soleil sets the bar high when it comes to circus-style performing arts. In the Yukon, there happens to be a society dedicated to performing and teaching circus performances. At the head of things is Claire Ness. Having gathered circus experience in Toronto and Montreal for many years, she ventured home to the Yukon where there hadn’t been very much of a circus scene. Ness sought to change that. She founded the Yukon Circus Society in April 2011, and is also the artistic director. “After being in Montreal, I decided I was going to move home and start a circus camp in the Yukon,” Ness says. “I figured I would need a bigger organization than just myself, so I could attract people and start building an army of clowns.” Ness recruited similar minded circus lovers and began teaching the art of performing. She rented a space in the Riverdale area and held weekend and after-school classes and workshops. As her classes and the society itself became more popular, Ness began to hold the summer programs at the Yukon Arts Centre. The summer classes are divided into different age groups, ranging from ages six to 14. A wide variety of circus activities are taught such as unicycling, juggling, pyramids, trapeze, and face painting. She

juggling, aerial hoop performances, acrobatics, ribbon dancing, unicycling – just about everything you would see at a circus in the big city, minus the wild African animals. Probably not a good idea to try and house elephants during a Yukon winter. What the society does offer in the winter are more indoor classes. One class that’s particularly popular is stilt building. In the spring of 2016, another stilt workshop will be held featuring stilt walking pro Graham Rudge. Autumn is a bit of a down season for the Circus Society. During the fall, Ness and her team have special projects planned. They are going to be building a school bus that they will use to travel throughout the Yukon and across country. “We are hoping to build a show that is compact and portable,” Ness says. In addition, they will be teaming up with Nakai Theatre to co-produce, Dogtown: The Musical. This show was written by Ness’s father Roy, and the music was written by fellow Yukoner Grant Simpson. s the crew who came here to film an episode of the Canadian television series Murdoch Mysteries a few years ago told me, Dawson is a place that’s just a perfect backdrop for storytelling. The particular episode was a lot of fun to watch them film and then see it on TV later on. It was the first episode of season five, the last season before the show migrated over to CBC. Lots of writers, from Jack London on, have used the town and its history. Some have done great work, others have not. This week I want to highlight two writers who have done, in my opinion, quite good work. In 1998, perhaps with the Centennials in mind, Robert Kroetsch released The Man from the Creeks. I had tried a couple of books by Kroetsch previously, and hadn’t finished them, so I was leery of this one, but the setting persuaded me to give it a try, so I picked it up – and then let it sit on my shelf, unread, for nearly 10 years. It’s a novelized version of Robert Service’s poem “The Shooting of Dan McGrew.” Since it’s not dealing with real history, but with a wild west sort of situation that never did occur in Dawson, handguns being banished from town, the liberties it takes with reality are more forgivable than those taken by Howard Blum a few years ago in his poorly researched novel The Floor of Heaven: A True Tale of the Last Frontier and the Yukon Gold Rush. Kroetsch provides an engaging backstory for the Man from the Creeks,” as well as the “Lady known as Lou,” “McGrew” himself and the kid at the piano playin’ that jag time tune. The latter turns out to be the fellow who is telling us this story at the ripe old age of 114, and he tells it well. The book is still available in real or virtual paper and I highly

Gold Rush. They are not accurate, in that there were never than many murders in the Klondike in that year, but they catch the spirit and feel of the place if not the authentic history, and they are not pretending to do anything else. The titles are Gold Digger, Gold Fever, Gold Mountain and Gold Web. They are not heavy reading, but they are a lot of fun. The last one came out in 2013, and so far there’s no mention of a fifth on her website. They take place in Dawson City in 1898, with some flashbacks to 1897 and others to earlier years in her life. Fiona co-owns and manages the Savoy Dance Hall, including a bar and lounge with a floor show, dollar-a-dance girls and a few rooms to let on the second floor. Throughout the four books we have been learning about her past and how she got to Dawson with her teenage son after a hardscrabble early life in Scotland and England – trouble seems to follow her around. inter is coming. You might say that’s our motto above the 60th parallel, but they’re also words to live by in Winterfell, the northernmost kingdom of imaginary Westeros. The Game of Thrones saga has unexpectedly surpassed cult status, but its mythology may have special appeal for northerners and not just for its keen sense of impending weather. Based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, the first four seasons of Game of Thrones, which airs on HBO, are available at Whitehorse Public Library. Martin’s series is a hybrid of history and fantasy, taking place on the pre-Magna Carta continents of Westeros and Essos where almost everyone is seeking either power or justice and the turn each strategy takes is usually violent. The great achievement of creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss is translating the novels to the small screen without sacrificing the sweep of the narrative or Martin’s rich detail. Westeros is made up of seven kingdoms, ruled by whoever possesses the Iron Throne. When the claim to the throne falls into dispute – and apparently it rarely doesn’t – the game is on. All kinds of ambitious characters enter the fray, ranging from glamourous royals to witty renegades to a princess-in-exile, but Martin’s story also includes the innocents who are swept up by the tides of war, such as the children of Ned Stark (Sean Bean), ruler of Winterfell, and or-

other inhabitants of the supernatural kind. The White Walkers, who seem to be sentient zombies, present an apocalyptic threat to the world that only a few humans recognize and they’ll render moot any victory in the game of thrones. It’s hard to get anyone’s attention, embattled as they are with other insurmountable obstacles. “He has more mammoths”, says Jon Snow (Kit Harington) of the Brotherhood of one foe, at the end of season four. “He has more giants. He has 1,000 times as many men.” Also, winter is coming. Game of Thrones is huge in scope, PHOTO: hbocanada.com filmed in multiple locations around the world, notably in Northern Ireland, Croatia and Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) Norway, and brought to life by a nurtures grudges in Game of brilliant cast. Let’s talk. Kevin G Moore Financial Advisor

Help Yourself Reduce Investment Stress We all know that stress can have many adverse affects on our lives and can affect the quality of our health. Cutting out stressors, including in your investment activities can have a positive affect. But how can you cut down on the various stresses associated with investing? Here are a few possible “stress-busters”: • Know your risk tolerance. If you’re constantly worrying about the value of your investments, your portfolio may simply be too volatile for your individual risk tolerance. Conversely, if you’re always feeling that your investments will never provide you with the growth you need to achieve your long-term goals, you might be investing too conservatively. • Know what to expect from your investments. Uncertainty is often a leading cause of stress. So when you purchase investments that are mysterious to you, you shouldn’t be surprised if they perform in ways that raise your stress levels. Never invest in something unless you fully understand its characteristics and risk potential. • Be prepared for market volatility. Historically, the financial markets have trended upward, though their past performance can’t guarantee future results. Yet for periods of months, and even years, these same markets can sputter and decline. So when you invest, be aware of this volatility; if you’re prepared for it, you won’t be shocked when it happens, and you should be able to better keep stress at bay. • Maintain realistic expectations. If you think your investments are going to earn a very high rate of return, year after year, you are more than likely going to be disappointed — and you could easily get “stressed out.” You’re much better off, from a stress standpoint, not to expect eye-popping results. • Diversify your portfolio. If you were only to own one asset class, such as growth stocks, and that particular segment took a big hit during a market drop, your whole portfolio could suffer, and it could take years to recover — causing you no end of stress. But if you spread your investment dollars among a range of vehicles — stocks, bonds, government securities and so on — your portfolio has a better chance of weathering the ups and downs of the market. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification may help you reduce the effects of volatility, it can’t prevent losses or guarantee profits.) • Think long term. If you only measure your investment success by short-term results, you can feel frustrated and stressed. But when you stop to consider your objectives, you may find that the most important ones, such as a comfortable retirement, are all long-term in nature. Consequently, it makes more sense to measure the progress you’re making with your investments in periods of years, or even decades, rather than days or months. Instead of fretting over your monthly investment statements, compare where you are today versus where you were 10 or 15 years ago. The results may well surprise and help “de-stress” you.

Looking for direction in today’s market? Let’s talk. By making the right moves for you, you can help take some of the stress out of investing for a long time to come. Member Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

Four stores owned by people you might know! by Lori Garrison

P

roud Yukoners want to shop Yukon – but sometimes it feels hard to do that. With so many of our goods and services being provided by companies on the Outside, it often feels like we’ve got no choice but to shell out to the big boys. For those who prefer to shop in their own backyard, however, here are four Whitehorse-based businesses owned by your friends and neighbours.

Listen to the following sentence: You can have pumpkin cheesecake with caramel butter pecan streusel topping. If for that reason, and no other, you should walk into Blackbird Bakery, you will be met with a literal smorgasbord of pies, cakes, cookies and other toothsome delights. Even if they should be out of that cheesecake – a real possibility, as it sells out fast, says owner Kayla Morrison – you wouldn’t leave disappointed. The cakes and pastries at the bakery, Morrison says, are not made with any one European tradition in mind, but rather reflect a desire to use real, wholesome ingredients: butter, eggs, cream, high quality chocolate. “We make old-fashioned (desserts, which) ideally reflect North American Canadian food – because we do have a food culture in Canada and... it has many things to offer,” says Morrison.

At the time, it really lived up to its name – the shop was miniscule – but it has since grown both in popularity and size. Still at Horwoods but having expanded into a new and very attractive open concept store, Itsy Bitsy Yarn Store offers fibre fanatics a variety of specialty yarns and other knitting and crocheting equipment. They specialize in “high quality, natural fibres,” says Jessome, such as wool, because acrylic fibres are “actually a type of plastic.” Itsy Bitsy also carries its own house-brand of hand-dyed fibres under the name Pseiso and has a selection of locally-sourced fibres, such as local alpaca wool and Yukon-dyed wools. “We always try to source our fibres as ethically as possible,” she says. cont’d on page 11...

Do you crave camembert? Blush for brie? Grin for gouda? Chime in for cheddar? Then you should walk on in to Cultured Fine Cheese and order yourself up a wedge of something delicious. Owned by local Yukoner Lara Daley and her husband, this quaint and neatly-arranged shop offers cheeses from British Columbia and Quebec as well as traditional cheese from Europe. The cheeses from Quebec are particularly interesting, Daley says, because they are often multi-generational enterprises producing unique craft products. There are no local cheeses because the amount of locally produced cheese is so limited. “We wanted to focus on local (cheese), but BC is as close as we can get,” she said. For real cheese lovers, Daley recommends the cave-aged Gruyere.

Hailing from sea-kissed Haines, this sweet couple used to run their business out of a trailer, but have since expanded to a fixed location on at 4th Avenue and Oglivie Street. Their shop features halibut, salmon, shrimp and crab from Haines. The fish that comes from Haines is all sourced from seven commercial fisherman. “It’s (bought) off the dock from the fisherman,” says Genny, adding, “my dad is one of them.” The shop also features oysters, mussels and clams from Vancouver and will soon be getting in lobster from Halifax.

The Librarian Recommends with Lori Garrison

Three Books for Adventurous Souls I

t’s the fall season, which means two things: the slowcreep of cold weather and a near-existential dread of the aforementioned. It also means, for thousands of Yukoners, a frantic dash to enjoy those last, fleeting moments of

liveable outdoor weather in the form of fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking or whatever your outdoor poison is. While we Yukoners tend to think of ourselves an outdoor breed, what are you supposed to do with this frenzy of woodsy activity if

you’re not so woodsy yourself? This short selection of books is for those who enjoy a good book and a steaming (Irish) coffee in their favourite chair as much as a weekend in the bush.

A selection of staff picks at the Whitehorse Public Library PHOTO: Joslyn Kilborn

Fiction:

Nonfiction:

Poetry:

by Farley Mowat (McClelland & Stewart, 1963)

by Claire Caldwell (Wolsak and Wynn, 2014)

Never Cry Wolf

As much novel as work of nonfiction, Never Cry Wolf depicts Mowat’s early years as a wildlife biologist in the Far North of the Hudson’s Bay region. Featuring strangely human wolves and oddly wolfish humans, unlikely coincidences and the over-arching yet incompetent hand of the federal powers-that-be, you’ll be left charmed but somewhat incredulous at Mowat’s adventures. Even those who are typically not a fan of nonfiction will enjoy Mowat’s conversational, easy-reading style. Best Part: Mowat’s description of the alcoholic beverage “Wolf Juice.” Bottoms up, boys!

Invasive Species

Escaped tigers, childhood memories, the slowly-sinking carcasses of blue whales and a world that feels simultaneously overand underwhelmed by life; Claire Caldwell’s sparse but gorgeous prose will guide you through it all. Though a resident of Toronto, Caldwell has spent time in the far north, giving her book an extra element of interest to the northern reader – you can be in Toronto one moment and Alaska the next, which is pretty much the dream come January, isn’t it? Best Part: “If time were a bolt of cloth, cotton print flecked with pterodactyls I’d opt for leather.” - from the poem A Seamstress Considers the Fourth Dimension

Bear

“Your Home Away From Home”

by Marian Engle (McClelland & Stewart, 1976)

4220 – 4th Avenue, Whitehorse, Yukon Y1A 1K1

Toll Free: 1 - 800 - 661 - 0454

Both lauded as a Governor General Award Winner and maligned as freakish work of sexual and emotional misdemeanors, Bear is a classic of both feminist and Canadian literature. Set on a remote island in Northern Ontario, featuring lonesome librarians, roguish boatmen and one extremely unsettling incident with a black bear, this book is not for children or prudes – nor for the faint of heart. Best Part: There’s a pet bear on a chain. No one seems weirded out by this.

hen I first began eating wild mushrooms, I was studying squirrels. I watched which mushrooms they picked to stash in trees, and figured that whichever ones they ate were probably not (or not very) poisonous. These days I know a little more and am glad I didn’t base my entire wild diet on this type of reasoning, or I might not be around to tell the tale. Muskrats for instance, have been observed to chow down on what the US Department of Agriculture calls “the most violently poisonous plant in North America.” Most people call it water hemlock, though another name is muskrat-weed. Water hemlock is in the carrot family, Apiaceae (old Umbelliferae), and has the characteristic white umbels (umbrella-shaped clusters of flowers) you might recognise from yarrow, cow parsnip, and of course carrots. Plants of the carrot family often contain compounds that act strongly on the human system, making them the source of both powerful medicines and strong toxins – I once went on a daylong field trip around southwest Scotland with the sole purpose of finding all the different members of this family, edible and deadly. Water hemlock is a tall plant that grows in marshes and on stream banks, and I have anec-

dotally found it to be more common in areas with a lot of beaver activity, though overall it is not a common plant in the Yukon. Its alternate leaves are twice- or thrice-pinnate (divided in a fernlike fashion), contrasting to the once-pinnate leaves of water parsnip (Sium suave) whose roots are edible. A distinguishing feature is that the veins on the toothed leaflets end at the notches between the points, as opposed to running to the ends of the teeth. Take great care when identifying these plants, consult a good guidebook, and if there is any doubt, leave it out! The root, or rhizome, in particular is extremely toxic, but no part of this plant should be touched – it is best to learn to identify it by looking at the leaf structure and the ribbed stems. The stems and rhizome contain a noxious, oily yellow liquid rich in the poison cicutotoxin, named after the genus (which is simply the latin word for these plants). It acts on the central nervous system, and in the convulsions that follow ingestion the heart muscle and those that control breathing are quickly compromised, leading to death. People are most often poisoned by this plant through mistaking it for an edible such as water-parsnip, or by using the hollow stems as straws. Anyone

Deadliness: A piece the size of a marble is sufficient to kill a person. Symptoms: Stomach ache, weak pulse, salivation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, tremors and violent convulsions. Onset: Within 15 minutes of ingestion. Treatment: Induce vomiting and administer a strong laxative, get medical help immediately. who ever played around with reed straws as a child can attest to their attractiveness as a toy, so if you and your kids are playing around in a marsh do a scan for this plant before letting them off on their own. A final note: that water hemlock is not the poison hemlock that was famously taken by Socrates to end his life in prison. That plant is unique among the carrot family for acting on the peripheral as opposed to the central nervous system, according to research by Enid Bloch, bringing about a much calmer kind of death – if death can be said to be kind. Kim Melton is an enthusiastic forager and gardener, inspired by all things that make up good, local food. She doesn’t want to poison anyone.

onquering exotic culinary worlds is exhilarating, but the dispiriting lack of some foods can make home feel very far away, indeed. For some people, a curious thing may happen once they relocate. They may develop a taste for things they wouldn’t have considered before. The local food will open myriad sensations. But for others, it’s not like that. They miss food – and even just ingredients to make food – from their home country. But with the new worldly selection of food at Andrea’s Fresh Market in Watson Lake people are more than happy to have a little taste from home. I didn’t believe it at first because Andrea’s Fresh Market looks very simple and small from the street. But once I went into the store and checked it out for myself, I was really impressed, not just because it is bigger than it appears, but it also has a lot of products. There are products you couldn’t even imagine, including Mexican, Asian and Korean. Everything is always fresh and they have all kinds of veggies, basic Items like laundry detergent, soap, baked beans, infant formula, gravy packets, tomato soup, and good quality meat. Andrea’s is quite popular, – judging by the many comments and reviews about it online. Here is a sample of some of the comments: “When I came to Canada the food was one of the things I missed most for sure! And when they opened the fresh market I totally loved it!! But you could pass this market in the street and not even notice is there,” says Jorge Rodriguez from Mexico “The products are great, but I’d like to be able to buy some wine with my fish and meat at the market, but the liquor laws probably have forced the market not

Shuttle and thread – tools used for tatting.

y sister Marion Dale and I share many wonderful childhood memories. One of our favourites is the summers we spent with our Great Auntie Kate. In her 70’s when we visited she raised sheep on a family farm near Renfrew, Ontario. No inside plumbing, no electricity, our days were spent exploring the sheep pasture and bringing bouquets of brown eyed Susans home for the table centrepiece. We walked a quarter of a mile to the highway to catch the bus to Ottawa. Auntie Kate would flag down the bus with her hankie. The summer Marion turned 10 years old we visited Aunt Edna in Ottawa and Marion learned a craft that has coloured her hand work ever since. The parlour in Aunt Edna’s home came directly out of Victorian times. A brick fireplace and heavy brocade furniture created a sense of past times.

Marion remembers a ferocious thunderstorm on the fateful craft evening. Now Marion was a wild rose. In fact the train man on our trip east that year had picked a rose while the train waited at a rail siding. He presented the wild rose to the “little wild rose” travelling with her mum and sister. So when Marion sat down to learn tatting, the patient, attention to detail work was out of character. Tatting is an ancient form of lacemaking. Girls and handmaidens were taught the craft. However, Queen Victoria from England and Archduchess Marie Theresa from Austria were also said to enjoy tatting. Originally fishermen used a large shuttle to weave heavy cord into fishing nets. They used the Bolin knot as the anchor – this is a slip knot. The idea was handed down to weavers who used finer thread and a smaller shuttle.

Double Knots on a Thread ... cont’d This form of lace making became very popular in Europe and was used to add elegance and charm to bed linens, camisoles and tablecloths. Tatting is known as knotting in England and frivolet in France. When the craft came across the ocean, it was called tatting in early North American history. Marion begins each lace work with the Bolin knot and winds the thread around her left hand. Her right hand moves the shuttle under over and then over under the thread on her left hand. Her favourite weight of modern cotton thread is #30. I watch Marion’s hands – there is a calming rhythm to the work as the lace comes alive.

the book but it looks like an early 19th century publication. Marion has taken tatting to a new level. At her home in Dawson City, she uses her elegant handcrafted lace on original dolls as well as on her own clothing. One of my favourite items is a vest – wearable art, to be sure. Marion used treasured crocheted doilies, antique lace and her own tatting to create this beautiful piece of clothing. Our family’s little wild rose! Aunt Edna and her teaching. Cotton thread transformed into lace. Really remarkable hand work. Nellie Dale is an artist/writer who lives in the northern forest and celebrates life as art.

P

eople new to outdoor activity such as hunting, hiking and camping are likely a bit more organized on the second or third trip than they were on the first one. At first the newbie often just stuffs the pack and gear boxes in no particular order and, unless they are lucky, has to go through all or most of them to find an item that they need. You won’t be looking for socks, rain-gear or toilet paper in a box marked KITCHEN. On fly-in, boat or truck trips where a backpack is simply used to pack gear in, a small storebought label attached with a ziptie can list all the contents of the pack. When camp is set up the pack is emptied and refilled with essentials for the hunt or hike. This same labelling can be attached to the latch on any of the coolers and the weather-proof plastic tote-boxes so often used for outdoor adventures. It saves a lot of time (and wet gear if it’s raining) because you identify the proper container by reading the labels. A system of colour coding saves time as well. The small to medium

size “stuff-bags” are available in a few different colours. Choose your own colour choices, but, as examples, socks can be in a small bag which is a different colour than the same sized bags containing personal medications, gloves, hats, headlamp, spare batteries, etc. Slightly larger bags in different colours can hold your long johns, rain-gear or wool shirt. These various bags can be laid out inside the wall of the tent so you can just grab the bag you need for whatever gear you are looking for. These bags can also be stuffed inside a shirt to make a pillow for the coming nights. A felt marker can permanently note what is usually carried in this particular bag. The tarp and rope bag will be a little larger and can also be labelled with a marker. Ropes are an essential part of any camp set-up and are available in the junk or good quality categories. You won’t keep junk rope for any length of time as it frays, has a knot memory, breaks easily or stretches excessively. Rope can be stored in bags clearly identified as “Rope bags,” by col-

our or type of bag. We don’t want to cut good rope so it should be carried in various lengths to suit needs around the campsite. It is easy to to pick out your 10’, 20’ or 30’ lengths simply by having them different colours. You choose the colour coding, but, as an example, 10’ blue ropes are easily selected from among the 20’ reds and the 30’ greens. Of course all ropes should be coiled neatly to avoid tangles and have them immediately ready for use. Quickly available ropes in the right lengths can often save the tarp or the boat from the effects of sudden –or predicted – middle of the night wind extremes. n the popular bowling movie Kingpin the term “munsoned” is coined by the film’s writers Peter and Bobby Farrelly to describe being up a creek without a paddle, essentially being left for dead. For the Mad Trapper Alleys in Riverdale that seemed to be its fate after closing its doors in May. But now the popular five-pin facility is munsoned no more as it recently reopened part-time for weekend play. “Exciting,” said facility manager Steve Kwok when asked what it was like to hear the familiar sound of ball against pins again. “Feels like I’m honeymooning again.” For 12 years Kwok and his wife Irene operated the popular facility. When their son took up the sport and the opportunity to manage the lanes presented itself Kwok jumped on it. It was a decision that would bring years of joy to his family and see his son go on to represent the territory at several national tournaments. “With the bowling alley it’s like you’re married to it,” said Kwok. “You have that love affair, that feeling all the time.” When the lanes closed in May of this year it wasn’t because Kwok’s love for the sport had run out, but due to the facility’s aging equipment and the amount of time Kwok could commit. In addition to running the bowling alley the Kwok’s operate two other businesses, both of which are located in the same complex as the lanes. They are also grandparents now, something Kwok says has become a top priority in his life. “When you become a grandparent you immediately fall in love with that child,” he says. But not having the lanes open these past few months and knowing how important they were to the community has weighed heavily on Kwok.

Owners Steve and Irene Kwok with their grandson

“As soon as the bowling alley closed people were asking me if it was going to re-open,” said Kwok. The lanes are an important fixture to many in Whitehorse. For years the Boys and Girls Club would host its largest annual fundraiser there. The Special Olympics bowling team trained regularly at the lanes and without it the team’s future was put in doubt. Prior to its closure there was even a Big Lebowski themed bowling party. Knowing all this and the fact the lanes and equipment were just sitting dormant Kwok approached the building’s landlord Chris Sorg to see if the bowling alley could operate part time. Sorg liked the idea and last month the lanes re-opened to a packed house. Special Olympics Yukon are also set to begin practices again. Right now the lanes will remain open on the weekends and for private functions until April, at which time a decision will be made on its future. In the meantime Kwok says he has no regrets about his decision to re-open the Mad Trapper Alleys and return to a busy schedule. “For it to just sit there and collect dust it is a shame,” said Kwok. “The equipment is dying but it’s not dead yet, besides, for all 10 machines to break down at the same time it’s easier to win the 6/49.” For many local bowlers having the lanes open again is just like winning the Lotto. The Mad Trapper Bowling Alley is located at 95 Lewes Blvd. in Whitehorse. For more information call 668-4277. George Maratos is a Whitehorsebased writer and comedian.
