The Amazingly Consistent Downward Trajectory of M. Night Shyamalan’s Career, 1999-2010 B

efore I turned my attention to carousing in the early 2000s, I watched a lot of movies, and as a young film buff I couldn’t believe my good fortune when I stumbled upon the Internet Movie Database (IMDB).

Here was a website with a seemingly endless stream of information, reviews and statistics on nearly every movie ever made.

My favourite IMDB feature was the user rating that accompanies each film. Website users could rate films they saw on a scale of one to 10 and IMDB would calculate the votes and display an average score for each flick.

I didn’t always agree with a given rating, but I appreciated its value as a barometer of the zeitgeist.

It was during this era that I saw The Sixth Sense (1999), written and directed M. Night Shyamalan.

After a few relatively unseen indie efforts, Shyamalan burst onto the scene with the story of a boy who can see ghosts, and the psychologist (Bruce Willis) who tries to help him. His clever “twist” ending captivated the public. I, too, was captivated.

Today, The Sixth Sense still maintains a solid standing, with a user rating of 8.2. As a rough guideline, any film that scores a seven or higher can be thought of as good, while a film scoring eight or above can be thought of as great. The Sixth Sense is also listed as #143 on IMDB’s list of the 250 greatest movies of all time.

Shyamalan’s next film, Unbreakable (2000) also starred Bruce Willis, this time as a man who begins to suspect he is a superhero. Currently Unbreakable clocks in at 7.2. Next came Signs (2002), a film about aliens who are allergic to water. IMDB rating? 6.7.

Then it was The Village (2004), about an Amish-like town terrorized by “creatures” of the forest — 6.4. In 2006 Shyamalan served us Lady in the Water, about an

adorable nymph trying to save the world and get back home — 5.6.

The Happening (2008) is about Mark Wahlberg — and bees (I think). Its IMDB rating is currently 5.1.

Finally, in 2010 Shyamalan directed The Last Airbender. I have no idea what it’s about, but I know IMDB users gave it a score of 4.4.

Notice the trend? Every single movie is ranked lower than the one that preceded it. My point is not so much to smear Shyamalan’s career, but rather to marvel at the mathematical improbability of his slide; its roughly equivalent to flipping a coin six times in a row and getting heads every time. Go ahead, try it at home.

And that’s just half of it.

Recently the IMDB has added a metacritic function to their website, which averages film critics’ scores for a given movie, and gives it a tally out of 100.

Critics and users don’t always see eye-to-eye.

For example, critics hated

Dumb & Dumber, giving it a score of 39 out of 100, but since then it has come to be regarded as a classic film of the Stupid Comedy genre. Its IMDB user rating is a thoroughly respectable 7.2. Conversely, critics loved P.T. Anderson’s latest film, The Master, giving it an 86 out of 100, but users were a bit gun shy, rating it 7.1.

But check out these metacritic ratings: The Sixth Sense: 66. Unbreakable: 64. Signs: 59. The Village: 44. Lady in the Water: 36.

The Happening: 34. And The Last Airbender: 20.

The exact same downward trend we witnessed in the user ratings is also evident in the metacritic scores.

Despite their sometimes-tense relationship, critics and the public have found something they agree on. When it comes to M. Night Shyamalan’s career from 19992010, they are locked together in a stupifyingly improbable dance of descent.

Yukon hunters bring antlers, horns and skulls together to see how they measure up this year

t’s going to be all antlers, horns, and skulls for hours on end next Saturday at the Big Bull Night.

From 5 p.m. until way past dinner time, big game hunters will be bringing hardware from animals they harvested to the Yukon Inn, and Yukon Fish and Game Association guys will be waiting with measuring tapes.

For hunters who think the animal they’ve harvested might be pretty damn big, the event is an opportunity see just how big it is.

The association has been hosting Big Bull Night for many, many years — executive director Gord Zealand postulates that the event may even go as far back as the launch of the association in 1945.

“The general idea is that it’s for anyone that has taken an animal and they want to have it scored by official scorers,” Zealand says.

“For some people it’s just for interest’s sake. For others, they have very large horns or antlers and they want to see where they fit with the Yukon records and the North American records.”

Having the antlers, horns, and skulls measured and scored is also the way the association determines who they give awards to at their annual banquet, which will take place in February.

Hunters bring in horns from bison and Dall or Fannin sheep; antlers from caribou, deer, elk, and moose; and skulls from bear and wolves.

In some cases, the hunters have spent many, many cold nights away from home to harvest the prized animal.

“To spend the time and energy for a large animal like that, it takes a lot of effort,” Zealand says. “With a large sheep, for ex-

says. “If you’re a meat hunter, you’re not looking for large horns, you’re looking for a smaller animal. The meat, in general terms, is a lot tenderer.”

The Big Bull Night brings together First Nation and non-First Nation hunters, men and women.

It’s an opportunity to share information, share stories, and share a laugh.

“It’s as much about socializing as anything,” Zealand says. “People come together and talk about the fall hunting season, and various people are going out on trap lines and you may not see them again for months.”

Depending on the success of the hunting season there can be between 30 and 75 hunters showing up, and the measuring can take place right up to 11 p.m. or midnight. It’s hard to say how many people will show up this year.

“This year will be interesting

because in the first three weeks of September people weren’t successful because it was so warm that moose weren’t moving around very much,” Zealand says.

“In the latter part of the year it turned around. With the chill in the air, the ruts started for the moose.”

As far as he knows, no bets have been laid, but word is out that two hunters have landed some mighty big moose antlers – a hunter in Whitehorse and another in Dawson City.

All will be revealed on Big Bull Night.

The Yukon Fish and Game Association’s Big Bull Night starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 in the Fireside Room of the Yukon Inn in Whitehorse.

Gearing up for 48 Hours of Filming Madness

he date may have changed this year, but the timing is the same.

Contestants in the Yukon 48 Challenge still have just 48 hours to devise, film and edit a short film for presentation.

While usually held in January, this edition of the contest will take place Nov. 15 to 17 in both Dawson and Whitehorse, and the results will be screened in both cities on Nov. 28.

In Dawson, the challenge is being organized by Klondike Institute of Art Culture (KIAC), and in Whitehorse the Yukon Film Society is running the event.

But participants don’t actually have to be in either of those cities. Dan Sokolowski, coordinator of the Dawson half, says one regular contestant will be uploading her entry from Ottawa.

However, being in either Dawson or Whitehorse will help participants tap into the energy of creation buzzing here in the Yukon Nov. 15 to 17.

Ange Bonicci, who works just a few desks away from him at the Klondike Institute of Art Culture, is gearing up to participate again this year.

Bonicci, who says she is more of an artist than a filmmaker, entered for the first time last year, and found it to be a great way to test her interest in the medium.

“I found the time constraint pretty freeing because there’s only so much you can do in just 48 hours,” she says. “I see it as a great opportunity to just experiment.”

Bonicci’s “Tunnel” came in at just under five minutes last year.

The parameters for the contest are wide open. Films can be live action, animation, fiction, drama,

images of light and dark all over town and them finding a way to link them together.

This was a little daunting at -45°C last January, so she is looking forward to being a bit warmer this year while shooting exteriors.

Editing takes up the bulk of the second day for most people.

There is no age restriction for the competition and entries may be individual or group efforts.

Flims should be family-friendly and 10 minutes or under in length.

The winning entry in the contest will be screened at both the Dawson City International Short Film Festival and the Available Light Film Festival in 2014. Aside from the formal judging, there will be Audience Award winners selected by both Dawson and Whitehorse audiences.

Witnessing the Results of an Intense Creative Process Playwrights present their 24-hour creations on Nov. 9 at the Yukon Inn

T

he audience in the Yukon Inn’s Fireside Room this weekend will have the opportunity to witness the results of 24-hours of intense, high-pressure, creative labour.

Creation begins with inspiration – it’s inspiration that sets ideas in motion. From there, determination takes over. When challenges arise, and they will, the creator must push on — through fear, computer glitches, or the notorious writer’s block.

This is part of the creative process, and it’s much easier said than done, as participants in the Nakai Theatre’s 24-Hour Playwriting Challenge can attest to.

Luckily, for those interested in writing for theatre, the folks at Nakai Theatre have developed a way for budding playwrights to push through the challenges of the process. Nakai hosts a progression of events to help writers past their regular limitations and develop their ideas to fruition.

The first of these events is the 24-Hour Playwriting Challenge, held this year on Oct. 5 and 6.

Participants spent the night at the Edgewater Hotel in Whitehorse and were given one day to bring their work as far as they can.

Next up, on Nov. 9, is the 24Hour Playwriting Cabaret, which is a celebration of the works created at the challenge. Participants will perform scenes from their scripts before an audience at the Fireside Room. Prizes are awarded for many different categories and the event is open to the public.

After the cabaret, Nakai Theatre often commissions the standouts to develop their scripts further and present larger perform-

ances at the Homegrown Theatre Festival, which takes place May 6 to 11 at The Guild Hall.

Nakai Artistic Director David Skelton says they have made efforts to keep the event as open as possible, encouraging all types of writers (and non-writers) to join the fun.

“Its about you as a creative person coming up with something that you never expected and in some ways – in many ways – you’re scared to do it because you’re going into a place you’ve never gone before,” Skelton says. “But

Julia Seymour and Doug Rutherford both participated in the 24Hour Challenge this year.

Seymour did so all the way from Vancouver, using Skype to connect with Skelton at the Edgewater Hotel. She had driven a U-Haul to Whitehorse the previous week, helping a friend move furniture.

“I was supposed to stay four days but I ended up staying over a week,” says Seymour. “I got to

home.”

Doug Rutherford is a long time Whitehorse resident and has participated in the challenge the last four years in a row.

“It gives you a chance to lock yourself away and actually create,” says Rutherford. “The phone doesn’t ring. There’s no stuff to do in the back yard because winter’s coming. It’s a chance to actually sit down and write. You get lots of support because you’re locked up with a bunch of other people who are doing exactly the same thing.”

They both entered the challenge with an idea already started, which they hadn’t been able to devote much time to.

By the end of the allotted time, both were happy with what they had completed.

“I just kind of made a little nest in my basement and tried my best to write some pages,” says Seymour. “I really would have loved to have been there and feel the creative energy of everyone. I think it’s much more challenging to do it by yourself. It’s hard to find that motivation to keep push-

ing through. But I feel really happy with what I did – I feel I had some breakthroughs and it was a really good opportunity. Even from far away.”

Rutherford is also positive about the experience.

“I exceeded my reasonable expectations and was leaning toward the unreasonable ones,” Rutherford says. “I finished a working first draft, which in 24 hours is really what you hope for.

I certainly would not have accomplished that on my own. It’s the deadline. I like deadlines. Deadlines make me perform.”

Both plan to perform in the 24-Hour Playwriting Cabaret on Saturday, Nov. 9 – Rutherford in person and Seymour via the magic of Skype.

From Prairie to Polar

A Saskatchewan-born family moves north

I

’m running around the house trying to sedate a cat. Of all our family members, she is the most unwilling traveler. After months of debate, decisions and details, the Alberts family is leaving the prairies and heading to Whitehorse. Most of us anyway.

Our daughter is staying in Regina to finish the current semester.

She will join us in a few weeks.

Although we’ll miss her terribly, it might be for the best since – until our furniture arrives – there will be four of us sharing one bed. Not including the cat.

of the worst winters on record, it looks like we chose the right year to move.

As we walk along the river, I’m struck by a notable difference between Whitehorse and Regina.

There is always something going on here, some event or festival. The support and inclusion of diverse cultural expression is celebrated here to a level I never expected. Despite the occasional lack of details (since “everyone already knows…”), it is great to live where the people enjoy and support this creativity.

Our last Saskatchewan summer before the sojourn north.

We’re at the S.S. Klondike, ready to Burn Away the Winter Blues. Our 5-year-old has enjoyed the waning winter months, but is clearly ready for spring. As the procession begins, he declares, “I hope this works.” It seems to – the snow started melting soon after. He is blissfully unaware that, by all accounts, this Yukon winter was unusually mild. And since Saskatchewan endured one

It is light all the time! Even the longest days in Saskatchewan cannot compare to the summer here. We’ve been busy exploring the trails, the geography here is vastly different that the flat fields I am used to. Driving the Alaska Highway through landscape I’ve never seen before, and seeing more wildlife in one summer than I have in my entire lifetime.

Travelling up to Dawson or down to Alaska, I notice another differ-

ence between my two homes. A 2-hour drive to Skagway for a day trip seems trifling, but the same journey in Saskatchewan was cause for major planning. Similarly, a 6-hour drive to Dawson on a whim is something my family simply would never have done in Saskatchewan. I chalk it up to the prolonged light and the slower paced, laid back Yukon lifestyle.

Maybe it’s starting to rub off on me…

August 22, 7:30 a.m.

The first day of a new school year here in Whitehorse. The last eight months have been a great adventure. We have had experiences that some people can only dream about. The opportunity to move here was one we simply could not pass up. And while it’s taking me some time to settle in – to make this new place feel

like home – it will happen in time.

However it occurs to me that the most reluctant of us to move is actually the one who has settled in the quickest; our cat is doing quite nicely.

Four Books that Will Make You Feel Human Elke Reinauer sends a dispatch from the Vancouver Writers Festival

W

ould you pay $250 to feel human?

In Amber Dawn’s new book How Poetry Saved My Life is a poem called “What’s My Mother F***ing Name.” In it, she describes how a client had sex with her and then said, “Now I feel human again.”

At the time she only cared that he paid $250 an hour. But later she asked herself, “What would I pay to feel human again?”

Amber Dawn was a sex worker.

Her poems are tough, funny and touching as she writes about her life in that profession and how people change the subject when the topic arises. It’s still taboo.

But not on the afternoon of Oct. 25 at the Vancouver Writers Fest.

Four authors presented their

memoirs.

In Drunk Mom, Jowita Bydlowska describes how she started drinking after giving birth to her son.

With brutal honesty, Bydlowska describes her life of blackouts, endless hunger, and just-onemore-drink while dealing with motherhood, anxiety and depression. This is a book I just couldn’t stop reading. It has the intimacy of a diary and kept me awake all night.

In Projection Priscila Uppal describes her journey to Brazil to find the mother who left her when she was a child.

You may think the reunion between mother and daughter would be very emotional, but it wasn’t.

didn’t even like her. Projection is humourous, but it’s also provocative, particularly with regard to family relationships.

Nocturne by Helen Humphreys is a deeply haunting memoir. It takes the form of a letter to Humphreys’ brother, who died of cancer. She writes directly to him, laying bare their secrets and all the things they have shared.

On this afternoon at the Vancouver Writers Fest these four authors read and talk about their books. It’s touching because every book is personal and intense.

Raising a Child with FASD Eleanor Millard’s new novel chronicles learning about fetal alcohol spectrum disorder while raising an adopted child

by Carrie Boles There was little documentation on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in the early 1980s when Carcross writer Eleanor Millard adopted a child who had been exposed to alcohol in utero.

Millard has tapped into that experience for the setting of her new novel. The book, called Summer Snow, follows protagonist Amanda Corelli as she adopts a struggling First Nations foster child from Ross River — an act that saves the girl from endless foster home shuffles, but alters Corelli’s life in unimaginable ways. A childless, then-married teacher in her early 30s, Corelli re-learns life as a single mother of a child afflicted by an unknown neuro-developmental disorder.

Millard is celebrating the release of this, her third book, on Nov. 7 at the Second Opinion Society in Whitehorse.

She says that although the novel is based on her own personal life experiences, it is a work of fiction.

“I wanted empathy for my characters,” Millard says. “Nonfiction is cold, stuck in reality, rather than in the emotional side of things. The reader is able to better connect to fictitious characters.”

Millard’s novel acts as a sociohistorical map of the town of Carcross and the surrounding communities as they deal the first generation of children suffering from pre-natal alcohol exposure.

It is a novel full of archetypal Yukon characters to love, hate, question and somehow accept.

The characters in Summer Snow include such heavy weights as Mabel Smith-Tagish foster mother, evangelical Christian, and full throttle aboriginal culture revivalist. She is a combination of coloni-

al import and powerful ‘70s movement activist that created hybrid First Nations characters across Canada.

Jacob the Anishinaabe priest from Northern Manitoba is another such example of a formidable character in Summer Snow.

He bares resemblance to the local Father Mouchet.

“Jacob is a combination of a couple priests I know – good looking, outgoing, very unorthodox, down to earth and larger than life,” Millard says.

Tracy, the foster child who Amanda Corelli adopts, is affected

by FASD. She seeks love and security through misdirected outlets.

Through the course of the book, protagonist Amanda Corelli fights endless battles with doctors, and counselors throughout the Yukon during the early stages of seeking answers, continuously being told, “it must be an Indian problem.”

Millard dared to tread in the dark territory surrounding the early diagnosis of individuals suffering from the effects of alcohol consumption on the fetus and the subsequential developmental issues that follow, and in the book Millard has Amanda wade through the same journey.

It was not until real-life social worker Michael Dorris and his book The Broken Cord came into Millard’s radar that the puzzle pieces to FASD started to connect for her.

Dorris’s book is an autobiographical account of adopting a native American boy with FASD. Summer Snow may have a similar effect for current readers on the subject –albeit through fiction. The novel reads not only as excellent narrative, but also as an in-depth look into the community dynamics of raising and supporting an individual with a pervasive syndrome.

Millard is a robust politician, social activist, grandmother, reformist and educator and her new book Summer Snow represents an empathic and truthful work of fiction.

Filipino Community Belts it Out Singing Idol’s Yukon finals takes place on Nov. 9

by John Boivin Local organizers of the talent contest say they’ve had an amazing response for a rookie event.

While Singing Idol is in its sixth year on community television TV5 in Canada, this is the first year the Yukon is participating.

“All these people are gifted, they are really talented,” says Aileen Gayangos, who runs the Asian Central grocery and restaurant in Whitehorse. “But it’s also really hard for them just to be able to participate. Many have two or three jobs. Some work the graveyard shift. They all had to work around their schedules to take part in our competition.

“For them, though, it’s a real chance to live their dreams, to have success in the field they love.”

Success will bring the winner of the Canadian finals two round-trip tickets to the Philippines, 50,000 pesos (approximately $1,200) spending money, a condo in Manila, and opportunities to appear as a guest on national television programs back home.

Despite the glitz and glamour of a televised competition, Gayangos says Singing Idol really reflects the traditional family values of the Filipino community.

“Making music is a cultural value for us,” she says. “Karaoke is a special thing we are really fond of. When there are birthdays, parties, karaoke is part of the night.

And we love to socialize.”

Gayangos says the event is also helping spread the word about the Yukon.

“I have friends in other parts of Canada who think we live in igloos, that we use dog sleds to get around,” says Gayangos. “This will really help raise awareness of the Yukon, put us on the map.

“This is a coming-of-age event for our community. This is an opportunity for us to show off our talent, give us a foot in the door to participate in other events in the south, in other parts of Canada. We won’t be outsiders any more. This says ‘We are here, we are alive.’”

It’s also an opportunity for Yukon Filipinos to make a splash in their hometown. From a handful of immigrants a decade ago, the community has grown to about 2,800 — one of the largest minorities in the territory. And it’s a community that wants to welcome in the larger society.

“This event’s open to all the public, that’s part of our goal,” says Gayangos. “We want to introduce our culture to everyone. It is a community and family event; kids are welcome. The more, the

Pinoy New Talent Singing Idol 2013 takes place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre on 1st Ave. in Whitehorse. hen Rachel Nunez steps onto the stage on Nov. 9, she will have the chance to make her dreams come true.

“I have been singing all my life,” the 21-year-old store clerk says. “I would love for that to be my job.”

Nunez is one of the finalists in the Pinoy New Talent Singing Idol 2013 contest, taking place at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre in Whitehorse. It’s a kind of Canadian Idol for the Filipino community. The national contest is holding its Yukon regional finals and selecting one person to head to the Canadian finals in February 2014.

Nunez would love to be that person. Her love of music started as a young girl in the Philippines, when her family enrolled her in singing school.

“We would do mall shows three times a week, practicing, building our confidence in front of audience,” Nunez says.

“Perky” is a good way to describe the 21-year-old, who actually stopped singing for a while, after moving to the Yukon in 2009.

“I lost three big competitions in the Philippines before coming here,” she says. “Now I want to prove something. I know I am strong. And I am going to try harder to make my dreams come true.”

It’s a high-pressure night, with six finalists being judged by celebrity guests. The show is being recorded for community television broadcast across the country and in the Philippines. Contestants will be singing in English, as well as Tagalog — one of the main languages in the Philippines. They’re judged on their presentation, pronunciation, and other technical points, as well as their artistic talent.

Theena Nerit is trying not to think too much about the big night. The 33-year-old restaurant manager really entered for a lark in May, and was surprised when she beat out two other contestants, who had formal singing training.

“I just sang with my father growing up, we had a small karaoke machine at home,” she says.

“I told my family back home I was in the contest, and they said, ‘Oh, now you’re showing your talent, over there?’”

She’s says she’s really in this for fun, and is taking part for her community.

“I feel a social responsibility to take this seriously,” she says. “I am doing this for my friends, my family — to put into the community what it brings me.”

As the recreation director for Mount Lorne, her penchant for good, wholesome food runs throughout the programs and events she organizes at the Lorne Mountain Community Centre.

Cookies and scones may be served while old-timers in the valley tell their collected stories, or a buffet bulging with seasonal ingredients will be paired up with an entrée of local music.

A couple of years ago she noticed a consistent cohort among event-goers who took a real interest in the food. Realizing a shared passion, these household chefs began to meet informally to share in the experiential learning of cooking. Instead of showing up to enjoy prepared meals, apronclad members arrive brandishing spoons, ready to roll up sleeves and expand culinary horizons in the company of friends. These meet-ups evolved into the Mount Lorne Foodie Club, and their in-

augural event explored sourdough and a host of techniques all focused on baking bread.

“We were careful with the name,” says Seitz, “because ‘foodie’ can bring up extravagant, special stuff, and our focus is on good wholesome food, and sharing it with each other. Food has an important role in community; it’s something everybody deals with, something everybody likes regardless of where you come from, so it is an ideal focus for sharing.

Following our bread-baking day a number of community members bought a grain mill in co-op with the community centre, and now they can come in at any time to grind their own grain.”

Other areas the club has explored are veggie burgers, curry paste and garam masala. The November focus is vegetarian food, with a menu of hazelnut spaetzle (a German fresh pasta) with Savoy cabbage, and red cabbage rolls with veggie stuffing topped with apple cranberry gravy.

his November marks the 13th consecutive year of the Blue Feather Music Festival in Whitehorse.

Gary Bailie began the festival in 2000 and continues to runs the show. It has grown each year, but still carries with it a message that goes beyond the music.

Before it became a festival, it was a celebration of life prompted by the passing of his wife.

Bailie’s wife Jolie Angelina McNabb took her own life after going through many battles; an abusive childhood, and later drug and alcohol addiction played large roles in her suicide.

“Even though she had been hurt so badly by so many people over her young life, she still dreamt of noble things,” says Bailie. “She dreamt of helping others, particularly other young people.”

Thirteen years later, the music festival continues to be a celebration of life, while the lure of drugs and alcohol continue to consume people.

“I still see it going on,” he says. “The drinking. I see alcohol and drugs still being a problem. Suicide is still happening.

Every year people take their lives. And

really – never mind First Nations – we’re all in this together. There is no difference. All people are dealing with alcohol and drugs and the issues of suicide and homelessness. All these things are conditions of our society.

“And we’re not saying we’re going to stop it. We’re just trying to create an awareness. We’re not here to stop people from doing what they do. We just want to make them think about it. Nobody likes getting preached to. We want to give them some hope toward getting their lives together, or at least knowing how they affect other people.”

Bailie believes others can follow his example and turn tragic events into hope for the future.

“Music and the arts are creative and healing tools,” he says. “When you’re feeling depressed or angry or whatever – write a song about it. Or work it out somewhere else and you’ll create something beautiful. People will go, ‘Wow, that’s amazing!’ and you’ll feel good.

“The beauty is you have a choice.

You always have a choice. Through our festival we try to create an environment where that can happen. It seems to be working so far.”

The first festival was something Bailie felt he needed to do, with family and friends and the greater community, to celebrate the life that he shared with his wife and to honour her dreams.

When she died Bailie and his daughter took her body to her people, the Peepeekisis First Nation in Saskatchewan.

There, they performed a traditional ceremony.

“When we laid her to rest the elders came and gave me gifts and said, ‘Thank you for everything you’ve done for one of our people. We want you to know that her name is Blue Feather Eagle Woman,’” Bailie says. “I was really taken back by that, and I thought ‘Wow, that’s beautiful.’ She was such a beautiful person and beautiful woman.

“We were flying home and I looked at my little girl. I wanted to do something that would not only honour her mother’s dream, but also help our daughter feel proud, and help her to be strong and move forward.”

That was the birth of the celebration that went on to become the Blue Feather Music Festival.

“We had food and we had music and everybody came together,” says Bailie. “You’d see people you hadn’t seen in months and months. I thought, ‘Why is it that

somebody has to die before you see everybody?’ Everyone liked the format and they started saying, ‘Hey, would you consider doing that again?’”

This year the Blue Feather Music Festival takes place on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Yukon Arts Centre. Doors open at 6 p.m., the feast is served at 6:30 p.m., and the music starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the YAC box office, or from Arts Underground.

Musicians From Near and Far Blue Feather Features

T

he Blue Feather Music Festival kicks things off in a different way than your average music fest. Before any guitar is picked there is a feast open to all.

“It’s a full meal deal,” says Bailie. “It’s probably the best deal in town. Breaking bread with people is a really good thing, and after that we go in to see some really good bands and hear some great music.”

There will be 10 different musical groups performing through the weekend. Friday and Saturday nights will features a headlining act from out of town, preceded by four local groups.

On Sunday, Nov. 10 there will also be a workshop at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre that many of the performers will be attending.

Toronto-based Juno award winners Digging Roots headline Friday night. They have been at work on a new album for years and will be showcasing some new songs.

Headlining Saturday night is American Apache guitarist Stevie Salas.

Salas has toured with Mick Jagger and played guitar for Justin Timberlake. He’s flying up from Texas for the festival, and Bailie’s taking the opportunity to show him some of the Yukon. n Continued on pg 21...

“Stevie Salas has been all over the world, but has never been to the North,” Bailie says. “What he said was he wants to come and see the land and meet the people.

We’re going to take him dog sledding and he’s going to perform. I expect he’ll put on a pretty high energy show.”

Some of the Yukon performers include hip-hop group Vision Quest; Sarah MacDougall who will be returning to Whitehorse from a festival in Iceland; and The Project.

“The Project is returning from last year’s (festival) – it’s kind of a reunion,” Bailie says. “They’re a band that played together 30 years ago and played here in Whitehorse a lot. Then they disbanded. We brought them together again last year so it was a big reunion and they went over so good. They played this whole 80’s retro kind of music and the whole place got up and started dancing.

So we said, ‘Well, hey, we went to all this effort to bring you together – let’s do it again!’ So they all agreed and they’re coming.”

This ancient practice is gaining momentum in mainstream culture A U.S. study

aking an appointment to go have some reflexology done is a new concept to lots of Yukoners, but it’s actually a very old healing practice.

Archaeological evidence points to reflexology being used in Japan from approximately 690 BCE, and in China from 2704 BCE. Four hundred years later, an ancient wall painting showed up in Egypt at approximately 2330 BCE suggesting that reflexology was practiced there, too. A painting in the tomb of Ankhmahor at Saqqara, known as the physician’s tomb, shows various medical treatments, including one in which people are receiving foot and hand care.

Reflexology is a non-invasive, drug-free, hands-on technique of applying pressure to reflex points in the feet, hands, or ears. Reflex points correspond to every joint, muscle, gland and organ in the body. By stimulating the reflex points, a reflexologist can strengthen that body part and influence it towards self-healing.

While the whole foot or hand is worked, reflexology is different from a massage, which focuses more on muscle tissue. Reflexology acts on all the body systems through the 7,200 nerve endings, also called reflexes, on the feet.

And you don’t have to undress.

Our traditional western medical system recognizes that stress is the most common cause of ill health in our society. One of the main benefits of reflexology is stress reduction. The effects of stress include fatigue, headaches, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and nausea.

Research has shown that reflexology has an impact on a variety of different ailments.

University of California indicated that women receiving weekly reflexology for premenstrual syndrome experienced a 62 per cent reduction in symptoms. Trials in the United Kingdom in the late 1990s suggest that reflexology accelerates the healing process for post-operative cases in hip and knee replacement surgery. And in January 2004, National Health Service doctors in the United Kingdom were advised to suggest reflexology as a treatment option for multiple sclerosis.

Other benefits include a strengthened immune system; improved digestion; reduced symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome; increased lymph and blood circulation; lowered blood pressure; and a reduction in pain, anxiety, depression and migraines.

While research in North America is gaining a foothold, most studies have been done overseas.

In some countries, reflexology has been recognized and has been, or is being, integrated into the national health system, notably, China, Denmark and the United Kingdom. In China, reflexology works together with Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well.

The traditional medical system in North America has not come to a consensus on how effective reflexology is, likely due to the limited number of research stud-

However, two hospitals in Michigan now offer reflexology for their cancer patients following a 2012 study, and it is being offered at various other wellness programs and cancer treatment centres in hospitals in the United States.

Here in Canada it does not seem to be as widespread as an

alternative, complimentary therapy.

There are a number of reflexology practitioners in Whitehorse and Atlin, although the treatment is not covered by the Yukon health care system or most private health insurance companies. However, Green Shield Canada now allows claims for reflexology under their extended health benefit package.

kid’s-eye view of life can be pretty interesting. The folks over at BYTE recently gave youth in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, and Old Crow an opportunity to experiment with capturing the world as they see it.

For a week at the beginning of October a team of BYTE facilitators together with Whitehorse photographer Jesse Whitehead held photography workshops with students in the two communities. In addition to providing tips on various approaches to good composition and technique, the point of the workshops was to give youth an opportunity to document how they see climate change affecting their community.

he Dog Powered Sports Association of Yukon (DPSAY) has the winter season planned out, including a few new events.

The organization started in the early winter of 2008 with the goal of promoting dog powered sports and providing a regular race series for mushers, skijorers and those with dogs who want to try skijoring but have few resources.

Five years later the organization is thriving with a dedicated group of volunteers.

Coming off of a successful summer racing series, Virginia Sarrazin, DPSAY race coordinator, says they already have five winter races planned. The plan is to have approximately one race per month beginning Dec. 15, with the races taking place at various loca-

“People seem to enjoy the various trails more as it’s all new,” Sarrazin says. “It’s also more challenging and therefore more fun when the dogs are on new trails.”

Also going ahead this year is the annual River Runner, a middistance skijor/sled race from Whitehorse to Mendenhall. It will take place in February for a fourth consecutive year as a Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous event.

In addition, DPSAY is making the leap from events surrounding dogs to events with (gasp) no dogs or, DPSAY socials, as they call them.

These are get-togethers at local establishments where folks can hang out and not worry about going to check, or feed, or water dogs in the truck, which is common at races.

“We never see each other without dogs, so what better chance to get out and socialize with each other,” says Amil Dupuis-Rossi, DPSAY spokesperson.

The first social of the year took place on Oct. 30 at the Town Club in the Town & Mountain Hotel.

The event was an opportunity to buy memberships, hang out, and win prizes. Guests talked about training, the upcoming winter,

weather, trails, the new gear out there, snow accumulation and, of course, dogs.

And dog poop. There is never a shortage of sharing on what’s coming out the back end of your dog(s) when a group of dog people get together.

Nevertheless, even those without a dog are welcome at DPSAY socials. The common denominator at these events is people who love being active and who love hanging out with dogs (and sometimes people, but mostly dogs).

An upcoming event is the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Stretch Class by Dr. Gail Jewell, DVM, Holistic Veterinarian, Canine and Equine Chiropractor. The first class has filled up, but a second class will be offered on Sunday, Nov. 17.

Yukoner Scott Bradley serves as youth ambassador at United Nations Climate Summit in Poland

Finland, Alaska, Greenland and Iceland, which share similar climates, and have the ability to affect one another.

Bradley has had an interest in climate change for quite some time. While surfing the internet one day, he saw a link to the Environment Yukon webpage regarding the youth ambassador position.

“I was intrigued and met the criteria so I decided to apply,” he says. “I had to send in a resume and a letter of interest with this application. I was invited down to Whitehorse for two interviews and was lucky enough to be chosen as Youth Ambassador.”

Bradley is looking forward to fulfilling his new role, and in the future he wouldn’t mind being involved with other climate control related issues.

Though the Yukon contributes less than one per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gasses, there are still improvements that can be made.

In 2009, the Yukon government launched the Climate Change Action Plan to create awareness about issues ranging from shifting biomes, to melting glaciers, to thawing permafrost. Consistent temperatures play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance in the Yukon.

To combat greenhouse gasses and glacial melting, energy efficiency has been promoted and

The government action plan also strives to reduce the emissions from existing buildings by five per cent.

Delegates at COP19 will be able to learn about the Yukon’s efforts towards managing climate control through Bradley’s input.

“I intend to let others know that we are working hard to minimize our affects on climate change and will continue working at it to be more and more efficient,” he says.

Bradley has been invited to participate in the 19th annual Conference of Parties (COP19) in Warsaw, Poland from Nov. 11 to 22. It’s a conference hosted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change where delegates will learn about climate change in different regions of the Earth, and tailor strategies accordingly.

Bradley will be representing the Yukon as a climate change youth ambassador.

As a circumpolar region, the Yukon is subject to many negative consequences emerging from changing climates.

“We are seeing variations in our permafrost and our glaciers are diminishing,” Bradley says.

“With warmer and less harsh winters we are also seeing an increase of invasive and new species. “(The Yukon has) a lot of ice caps and glaciers that are in jeopardy of melting more and increasing sea levels.”

According to Barrard and Sharp 2010 statistics, melting glaciers in the Yukon have increased the sea levels by 1.3 mm. This is an issue that interests Bradley and he hopes to learn more about it from fellow Arctic region delegates, including Russia, Norway, Sweden,

his is a picture of my fatherin-law and I with the moose we were lucky enough to get on September 21. The picture was taken by my brand new brotherin-law Jamie Pike.

I cow-called from the deck of the family cabin on Fox Lake late Friday evening and promptly went to bed. The next morning I woke to my newfie brotherin-law’s thick accent exclaiming, “There’s a moose in da pond b’ye!”

We jumped in the boat and sped across the lake to meet the swimming moose on the other side. Several minutes later, the hunt was over and we had our moose on the shore ready to be processed and hung.

My favourite way to prepare moose depends on time of year and occasion. Summertime calls for big ‘n’ fat moose burgers done on an open fire or barbecue.

Cooler temps call for a moose roast done low & slow with all the fixings, including, but not limited to, carrots, parsnips, onions and mashed potatoes with gravy.

I suppose a green salad is okay too, but not mandatory.

Any way you slice it, there is nothing quite like the taste of a young moose you have hunted and harvested with family by your side.

Hiking Stony Creek I haven’t written about Stony Creek before, even though I drink its water daily and follow its bank up to the mountains a few times each year. Once I even followed it beyond its source, overlooking Harrison Lake.

The Stony Creek hike is a popular. It’s easy and close to town, about 40 km north of Whitehorse on the Alaska Highway. Heading up the sandy ridge I often see porcupine, carnivores, ungulates, bear,

and human tracks.

On Monday, Oct. 21 I parked at the yellow gate by the gravel pit, but you can drive up the first part of the trail if you like. I set a fair pace and made it to the foot of the mountain, just above the tree line, in approximately two hours.

The foot of the mountain has a little, gravel-y clearing where the trail used to end, but over the last five years ATVers have extended the trail another kilometre westward.

When you rest at this lovely outlook, be careful of the tiny phlox flowers that grow here.

Phlox only blooms in June – beautiful violet flowers. But during the rest of the year it is so tiny and inconspicuous in colour that you barely see it.

This flower is rare in this part of the Yukon.

Looking at the geology

The tiny phlox grows on the mountain by Stony Creek. This photo was taken in the summer. of the territory, we are in granite country, but on a geological map this is a small area that’s different. The minerals in the ground have an effect on the flora. Perhaps this has resulted in the phlox setting up a home here.

From the view on this hike, the world is wide open. To the east, one can hike towards a glorious rock face that’s visible from the highway. North, there is Squashberry Mountain (it’s true to its name). To the west, a beautiful big mountain that has incredible panoramic views.

I follow the trail that takes the path of a moraine (also called an

It’s pretty cold here – the little tarns, which are pools in the mountain, north in this pass are frozen. I hike up what I call Big and Beautiful a little ways and then turn south, side-hilling.

When the creek comes back into view, I look down into it, opposite from the gully, two vertical lines of talus in the mountain to

the south, and I descend.

Following a slight ridge that continues on the opposite side of the creek and I emerge in a narrow gap, between vertical walls of rock, which, referring to the geology of the area, are not granite.

R

espect is one of the most important ideas a hunter can learn and practice.

Hunting is an activity where the participant is alone, there is no audience to observe or influence behaviour.

With that in mind, it is vitally important that the hunter learns that doing things in a fair and honourable way comes from an inner belief in right and wrong, rather than from the pressure of others.

Ethical, responsible, caring behaviour illustrates an essential level of respect and an absence of this behaviour indicates the hunter doesn’t understand the importance and historic value of their connection with the land.

Poor behaviour by people calling themselves hunters is also the ammunition used by international anti-hunting groups.

Respect for the animal starts long before the hunt begins.

Proper wildlife identification skills are important so that a hunter can abide by rules. It’s easy with moose, deer or elk because only the males have antlers.

Caribou sexes both have antlers so the hunter must learn more about identification because only bulls are legal to hunt.

Respect also includes your choice of an adequate, legal rifle, which should be sighted in and practiced with until you can be accurate up to your own range limitations. Learn stalking skills to get closer to the animal because accuracy and bullet energy are enhanced at shorter distances.

The animal that dies quickly from a minimal number of shots has not suffered unnecessarily, has not escaped, and has not experienced undue stress, which effects the flavour and consistency of the meat.

Every year wildlife officers charge hunters with wasting meat and occasionally abandoning the whole carcass. A common meat wastage scenario occurs when the people involved are unprepared as far as equipment, clothing, and weather are concerned, or they make a very bad decision by killing an animal too far from the boat, truck or camp.

Sometimes the hunter only wants the horns or antlers as a trophy. This shows complete disrespect for the animal and if the person is caught wasting meat for this purpose the resulting penalty is justifiably severe.

How you prepare, how you think about the animals you are hunting, and how you care for them once they have been shot, speaks volumes about the level of respect you carry with you as a hunter and also as a person.

A final thought: I always take a second or two to quietly thank the Great Spirit (or whoever you think is in charge) for the animal I have just taken. I know many others who do the same, and I believe it is a lot more respectful than a lot of yelling and high-fives.
