For this show Colin has turned away from his strength, portraiture. His focus for the last several months has exclusively been the Yukon landscape and the scenes he sees around him everyday, whether walking the trails around his cabin at Kusawa Lake or venturing off on road trips to enjoy the summer or see the fall colours. “Down the Highway” is both a metaphorical and a physical departure, but the thing that remains consistent is Colin’s ability to render his subject with stunning accuracy.

or the past few years the 12 Days of Christmas Market at The Old Fire Hall has been jam-packed with shoppers perusing the jam-packed aisles of jam, jewelry, mittens, tree ornaments and other Christmas lovelies.

This year, shoppers and vendors will have some extra space to spin around, because the society hosting the event has decided to move it to a larger venue.

The eighth annual 12 Days of Christmas Market will take place at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre this December – and with the extra space, there will be more artisans offering their crafts than last year.

Claire Martel, executive director of the Fireweed Community Market Society, says this year 73 vendors will be selling their Yukon-made art and crafts, which is 14 more than last year.

“We had 59 vendors last year, but we squeezed them into 40 spaces,” she says. “We were cramming as much as we could into this little space, and clearly we had grown out of it.

“This is the first year that we had enough space to run registration day, and then still have more space after that.”

They’ve got so much space this year that they’re going to be offering free craft workshops every day of the market from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

shops through the 12 days, with such projects as making Christmas cards and tree ornaments.

Shoppers will find many of the same artisans as last year offering such things as woodworking, sewing, hand-crafted soap and other body care products, puppets, calendars and photography.

Martel says one of the handy things about the 12 Days of Christmas Market is that you don’t have to pay each vendor, you can collect all the gifts and crafts you’d like to buy multiple vendors and then just pay once at the checkout area – with cash, credit, or debit cards.

“It’s set up like a store, it’s all Yukon-made, and it’s only there for 12 days,” she says.

The 12 Days of Christmas Market will take place Dec. 11 to 22 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. The market will be open at 10 a.m. every day, and close at 7 p.m. every day except the Thursday and Friday nights, which are so busy they will close at 9 p.m.

n Nov. 13 the Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY) will present Onde de Choc at the Yukon Arts Centre. This multidisciplinary event features 18 artists and performers from the French-speaking community, followed by a catered art show featuring local francophone artists and music by Nadine Landry and Sammy Lind. Onde de Choc is French for Shockwave. The show will include musical and literary talents, as well as dance and theatre.

“It’s a whole event,” says Virginie Hamel, arts and culture manager for AFY. The goal of the event is to create a space for French-speaking artists to try out more experimental works and develop new artistic relationships and collaborations, says Onde de Choc’s Artistic Director Genevieve Doyon.

“Collaborations will appear on this stage that may never happen again,” Doyon says. “All the artists have made a pact that we are going to leave our comfort zones.”

This is the third year the event has been held, and the theme of this year’s show is en passant, a French expression which means in passing.

“This year is the first year we are really stepping away from the talent show format, for a more cohesive experience,” says Doyon.

“It’s a whole other ball game (from the last two shows)… there are risks being taken here that wouldn’t be taken in a talent show.”

“There are so many amazing opportunities for artists (in Whitehorse),” says Doyon, “but the events are mainly in English. Onde

de Choc offers artists an audience who will understand their work in a different way. If you sing a song in French to an audience who doesn’t speak French, their response will be completely different than if they were native English speakers.

“Onde de Choc is very community oriented and… is the only all-French event to push (artistic) boundaries.”

A

t a recent municipal candidates’ forum it was suggested that one of the solutions to Dawson’s perennial winter housing problem would be to arrange to rent out rooms in some of the establishments that only operate in the summer.

It’s true that a good many places close up shop once the summer visitors slow to a trickle, and that shutters quickly go over the windows and doors.

What is also true is that most of these spaces were never built to withstand the chill of a Klondike winter, so it turns out that’s not a very practical suggestion.

There was a time when those doors and windows were simply covered with whatever random pieces of plywood the owners could come up with, banged on quickly in the operators’ haste to get the job done before the weather became too inclement.

This resulted in perfectly decent properties looking like they had been abandoned, never to open again.

A town that’s trying to promote its shoulder and winter seasons as another kind of tourism really doesn’t want to project the air of being a ghost town for eight months of the year. Goodness knows, enough of our visitors ask how and why any of us would stay here year ‘round. Let’s not give them even more of a reason to wonder of they should happen to visit in the winter.

This issue was especially important when a lot of the shuttered hotels were located in the most prominent areas of the town.

A citizen’s committee was formed to draft some guidelines for off-season winter and door coverings, and they came up with some sensible solutions.

damaged boards every year; refresh them from time to time.

Better still, paint them some colour (black and grey seem to be favoured suggestions) that made it clear they were part of a temporary closure plan, and have all the shutters on your property be of the same type.

Next step: put some decorative thought into the preparation of these boards. This has led some business to paint the panels so they look like blacked out windows – just a set of criss-cross frames does the trick.

To the eternal credit of the members of the committee, a number of them even pitched in and helped business owners put these ideas into practice.

The result is that most of the shuttered buildings in town now look like they’ve been cozily tucked in for the winter rather than deserted forever.

The classiest set of shutters in town has to be the batch on the Gold Rush Campground, smack in the middle of town. Pat and Dianne Brooks went all out and made their white painted shutters look like actual doors and windows.

The office and washroom doors look like the real thing, complete with painted windows and door handles. All the doors have markers to identify what would normally go on behind them: office, laundry, ladies, gents. The panels over the windows appear to have curtains in them.

It helps to remind us all that winter doesn’t last forever.

A Goldmine of History What if we created a True North Queen School for anyone to learn about how the Yukon came to be?

I

have an idea that would really put the Yukon on the world map: let’s build a True North Queen School. Tourists and Yukon students could spend few weeks at the Queen School, named after the wealth of history Rendezvous Queens study in order to be ambassadors to the Yukon.

If we built a True North Queen School, tourists and students could learn about such nuggets of history as the story of the Alaska Highway construction; the heart-wrenching stories of friendships between the American and Canadian soldiers during wartime; the radio transmission tower in Hillcrest during World War II and even the living reminders of wartime, such as the pre/ post war duplexes – most without a garage.

Since the Yukon was formed in 1898 – during Queen Victoria’s reign – such a school would take us back in time and classes would offer a wealth of knowledge.

It is fascinating to learn some extra facts that we don’t normally have the opportunity to learn. We could offer basic history of such topics as lifestyle and clothing during that period. That will be just magical.

When I was running for the 2015 Rendezvous Queen title, I discovered a few facts from my research. Velvet was for the rich and famous. Silk was in fashion and women followed specific fashion guidelines for what to wear before sunrise and sunset. Men

No Secrets to Investment Success Many people look for the “secrets” to investment success.

Is it timing the market just right? Is it finding those hot stocks or getting in on the “ground floor” of the next big thing? Actually, these types of moves have little relevance to the vast majority of investors — even the most successful ones. So let’s take a look at some steps you can take that can be effective in helping you work toward your financial goals.

•

It’s time in the market…not market timing. Some investors think they can succeed at “market timing” — buying when the price is low and selling when the price is high. And this would indeed be a good strategy if they could predict highs and lows. No one can accurately forecast these peaks and valleys, though. So, instead of ducking in and out of the market in a vain attempt to catch the highs and lows, simply stay invested. The more time you spend in the market, the lesser the impact you’re likely to feel from short-term price swings. And if you’re always invested, you’ll always be in a position to benefit from the next market rally.

•

It’s “buy and hold” — not “buy and sell.” Even if you aren’t trying to time the market, you may be tempted to buy and sell frequently as you look for new and better opportunities.

Yet, this constant buying and selling can be costly. Frequent trading, with all the additions and subtractions from your portfolio, can make it hard for you to follow a consistent, unified investment strategy. You’re better off purchasing quality investments and holding them for the long term, until either your needs change or the investments themselves no longer possess the same attributes they did when you purchased them.

•

It’s building a strong foundation — not getting in on the “ground floor.” Many people regret not being one of the initial investors of a company that has done spectacularly well. But most new companies don’t achieve anywhere near that level of success. So, instead of looking for the next big thing on the “ground floor,” try to build a strong “foundation” consisting of a mix of quality investments suitable for your risk tolerance, goals and time horizon. This type of investing may not sound glamorous, but a strong foundation is better equipped than a possibly shaky ground floor to withstand the shifting winds of market forces.

•

It’s cool-headed thinking — not chasing “hot stocks.” If you browse the internet or watch one of the investment shows on cable television, you are bound to read or hear about “hot” stocks. But by the time the news reaches you, these stocks may already be cooling off. Even more importantly, they might not be right for your needs in the first place.

Instead of chasing after hot stocks, which, by their nature, carry a strong emotional component (namely, the desire for quick, big gains), try to coolly and dispassionately analyze your situation to determine which investments are really most appropriate for your goals.

Etiquette was an art and there were specific rules around such things as dinner, including where to put your purse and gloves, which cutlery to use and when, and more rules for playing host to a dinner and the seating arrangements.

It would be ideal to offer extra lessons for pageant contestants vying for the Rendezvous Queen title. They could learn basic make up, public speaking, walking with elegance, time management – and strategies for selling Rendezvous event tickets.

We have the talent pool and the experience. It could be a collaboration between the Yukon College and Tourism Yukon to start a part-time Queen School. We could take some cues from the successful business model of the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous, which is 50-plus years and going strong.

Blue Feather Turns 15 The Blue Feather Music Festival runs Nov. 6 and 7 at the YAC, with a youth workshop of Nov. 8 at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre

ary Bailie has taken a personal tragedy and turned it into the fuel that powers him to produce the popular Blue Feather Music Festival.

Now in its 15th year the annual music event was never meant to be the large-scale music festival it has become.

It initially began as a celebration of life for Bailie’s common law partner Jolie Angelina McNabb.

At the age of 25 McNabb committed suicide, no longer able to deal with the pain of being sexually abused as a child and her subsequent addiction to alcohol and drugs.

Soon after her death Bailie began working on an event for his late partner, something that would honour her and through it give opportunity to youth.

Thus, the Blue Feather Festival was born.

“Blue Feather Eagle Woman was the traditional name given to her when she was put to rest by the Cree Elders in Saskatchewan,” explains Bailie. “Her dream was to help youth because of everything she suffered in her young life. She said no kid, no matter your nationality, should have to suffer.”

Fifteen years later, the Blue Feather Music Festival is showing no signs of slowing down.

“The festival has done wonders for me,” said Bailie. “By getting out there and doing something positive with my life it helped me to recover from my loss, losing a person that was very dear to me.”

Bailie’s eyes light up with pride as he speaks about how far the festival has come since its humble beginnings and what a success it has been when it comes to empowering youth.

“I have an apprentice that started with the festival when she was just 11 years old; now she is running the show,” explains Bailie.

Gary Bailie is the founder of the Blue Feather Music Festival, which takes place Nov 6-7 That apprentice, Janelle Cousins, is just one of the hundreds of youth that have been impacted by the festival.

“We wanted to use music and the arts as our creative healing tools,” said Bailie. “For our young people it gets them involved and is a creative outlet for them and music is a way for them to express how they feel.”

“We don’t only want a better world for our children we want to kind of create better children for our world. This is a way to give them the tools to do that.”

The youth are the foundation of the event. They are the stage managers, the lighting designers,

the audio and video technicians and even the cooks.

“We mentor them, we walk alongside them, we don’t micromanage them, we just make sure we are replenishing the stock because these skills are things that can be used anywhere in the world,” says Bailie. “We respect them and their ideas and that’s very empowering when they see their ideas being used.”

As the festival has grown so has the level of performers.

Bailie says he has been able to lure big name acts north because they support what the festival is about.

“They like the theme of it and

the fact that we are dealing with youth,” said Bailie.

This year the Blue Feather line-up features Canadian female rocker Sass Jordan, Blues guitarist Jimmy D. Lane and headliner Stevie Silas, who has worked with the likes of Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart and even had a cameo and did the guitar score for the movie Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

Bailie says the festival wouldn’t be able to do what it does without the volunteers and the extensive support from the community, as evident by the many logos adorning the festival poster.

“We have a great team and an amazing group of really skilled people that throw their talents on the table and we all work together just to make this happen year after year,” said Bailie. “I’m a born and raised Whitehorse guy and there is nothing more inspiring than knowing the community appreciates what we are doing.”

That community support, be it volunteering or sponsorship, allows the festival to remain affordable.

“We are just happy to be able to put this on in our community and give people a chance to see some great music.”

The lineup of acts that will grace the Yukon Arts Centre stage on November 6 and 7 include local musicians The Midnight Sons Band and Selina Heyligers-Hare.

“Selina is just one of those girls that lives to play music and how great is that.”

In addition to the two nights of music at the Arts Centre a third day of music has been added this year, with the Rockberry Jam for youth taking place at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre Sunday afternoon.

And this year, as it has every year, the festival is operating under a theme.

For the 15th anniversary that theme is soul shine.

Bailie says it means to love the skin you are in and realize that everyone has a gift and for Bailie the the festival is just that.

“It has become a big part of my life,” smiles Bailie. “Sometimes out of tragedies are born great things and this is one of those stories.”

W

hitehorse director and playwright Arlin McFarlane strives to captivate. She has developed a unique, one-actor play about our ability to change our lives around thanks to neuroplasticity.

The play is about a young girl who is prone to self-destructive behaviour and seeks the help of a scientist. The scientist uses principles of neuroplasticity to help her – our brain changes in accordance with changes in environment, emotions, thoughts, behaviour, etc.

McFarlane’s research into the anatomy of the brain and how it relates to self-destructive behaviour inspired her to create the play.

“Self-harming behaviour does not always refer to suicide. It can be addictions and trauma which also cause us to harm ourselves,” McFarlane says.

She started to see the science of neuroplasticity as being hope

for destructive behaviour.

The play is not based on a true story, but does have certain elements of truth to it. To describe this concept, McFarlane refers to a quote from Canadian writer W.O. Mitchell, “Every little bit is true even when the whole thing is a lie.”

She began writing My Brain is Plastic four years ago at the Nakai Theatre’s 24 Hour Play Making Challenge. Actually writing a play is something new to McFarlane, although she has spent numerous years directing theatre productions.

“When you are directing, you have the script, which is like a road map, and you simply follow it,” she says. “Whereas with writing, you have to be exact, but also understand the story you are writing.”

McFarlane and her team presented the play at the Watson Lake Secondary School on Nov. 3, and offered art workshops, and

open mic, and tea on Nov. 3 and 4.

On Nov. 5 the community had a feast, followed by a presentation of the play.

McFarlane says the objective of the student art workshops is to raise awareness of these issues.

My Brain is Plastic a multimedia, one-actor show with the protagonist and supporting characters all played by actress Mary Sloan. It is presented by Whitehorse Independent Theatre (WIT).

The next scheduled presentation of My Brain is Plastic will be at the Magnetic North Theatre Festival, which will be held in Whitehorse in June.

Rebound to the Real Thing

ongratulations, Justin, on becoming Canada’s next Rebound Prime Minister.

It’s a dubious honour. Yes, it’s great being the nice guy who swoops in after the psychopath finally leaves the room, but it’s a lot of responsibility not to harm an emotionally-fragile country that might not be ready to commit, yet.

So the question for Mr. Trudeau is: Can you turn yourself from the Rebound into The Real Thing?

Granted, you’re guaranteed a four year tenure (sorry, Joe Clark, we just weren’t ready). Can you transform yourself from J. “Not Harper” Trudeau to Justin I’m Your Man? Here’s some advice on shedding your rebound status.

1. Don’t badmouth the ex.

This is the first rule of being the rebound. It’s tempting. Indeed, since your biggest virtue is simply that you’re not the ex, old helmet head becomes an easy target for proving what a nice guy you are. Tread lightly and take the high road.

This means even when Canada launches into a tirade about how Harper took money from pensioners and never put the toilet seat down, don’t chime in with a righteous, “that jerk — you were too good for him.”

Just nod sympathetically and help us get over him. Nobody needs to be reminded of their relationship mistakes.

2. Be the change, but not a freak.

A friend of mine broke up with his station wagon about two years ago and bought an impractical,

mid-life crisis sports coupe. He’s taken a lot of razzing for it, and after two years of not having anywhere to carry his groceries, he says his next car is going to be a Subaru.

The lesson? As the rebound, we like you because you’re different, but don’t be so different that people feel like you’re from another planet.

You don’t have to wear flannel shirts, but at the core of Canada’s identity, there’s still big nature, First Nations, and a bunch of people from other countries, so don’t forget about them. Dancing in the streets: good. Pole dancing in the streets: bad.

3. Pull out the fireworks for the half time show, not the opener.

Rebounds can seem amazing at first, but as the months wear on, they can lose their novelty.

You need to stay in the game for all three periods, all nine innings — choose your favourite political sports analogy.

Yes, act fast on some critical promises, but after the rainbows fade and the unicorns prance off, make sure Canada’s not sitting on the sofa watching Netflix, wondering what happened to that guy who took all the opposition parties to Paris.

4. Be nice to family and friends.

People getting out of a bad relationship need to rebuild relations with their loved ones, so be good to them, especially the old people and the kids. No harm in cozying up to Canada’s friends either — an endorsement from the Scandinavians is as good as a ring on your finger.

5. Finally, you need to deliver.

n the world of beverages, everything old is new again.

The cocktail revival of recent years has been matched by a revival of interest in old-fashioned, non-alcoholic refreshers. On food blogs, in restaurants and in modern cookbooks you’ll find recipes for herb or fruit-infused waters, fruit and vinegar combinations like shrub or schwitzel, fermented drinks such as root beers, kombucha, kvass and fly, and coolers based on homemade fruit or herb syrups.

As the holiday season approaches, when little kids and designated drivers will be among the merrymakers that crowd our living rooms, it’s a good idea to have some of these festive and delicious non-boozy alternatives ready to go.

One of the quickest ways to make a simple and tasty beverage is to add sparkling water to syrup — birch or maple spring immediately to mind — stir, pour over ice and add a twist of lemon, lime or orange. For kids, such concoctions are a great alternative to pop or fruit juice, and they’re equally appealing to adults, especially if served in a wine or rocks glass.

Once you’ve tried ready-made syrups it’s an easy leap to start making your own. Northern herbs and berries make great syrups.

As a general rule, some fruits are juicier than others. Make fruit syrup by combining 1 part water and 2 parts chopped fruit or berries in a saucepan, bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, strain. Add 1 cup sugar to 2 parts juice, bring to the boil again, reduce heat and simmer until syrupy, about 10 to 15 minutes. Cool and refrigerate.

I try to keep a selection of three or four in the fridge at all times — right now we’ve got crabapple, spruce tip, fireweed and highbush cranberry on the go, plus a really nice ginger syrup my brother-inlaw sent up from Parksville. When

you’ve got a basic syrup pantry set up you can start mixing and matching right in the glass to create new flavours — experiment with crabapple and spruce tip, or Labrador tea and highbush cranberry, or rosehip and yarrow, for example. (Remember to write down the successful combinations so you can reproduce them.)

For years I’ve danced on the outskirts of learning to create fermented brews like root beer or kvass. I still haven’t ventured in, but I figure a good place to start is to experiment with drinks made from already-fermented materials like vinegar.

At a recent dinner celebrating the caribou harvest one of our hosts produced a big jugful of haymaker’s switchel, a cooling drink made with cider vinegar, ginger and molasses originally served to hay harvesters as they toiled under the hot sun. Switchel is said to have originated in the Caribbean — hence the ginger and molasses — and migrated to the United States in the 18th century.

At the harvest table the switchel had a stimulating, rather than a cooling, effect. The sourness of the vinegar, the bite of the ginger and the pungence of the molasses combined to wake up the appetite the same way wine does, and at the same provided a cleansing contrast to the rich flavours of meat and fat. With a bit of birch syrup subbing in for some of the molasses, switchel gets a boreal twist and becomes a great drink to accompany northern feasts and holiday celebrations.

Holiday Switchel (Adapted from EatingWell.com)

Ingredients 9 cups (1.75 L) water, divided 1/4 cup (60 mL) minced fresh ginger 1/4 cup (60 mL) honey, birch syrup or maple syrup 1/4 cup (60 mL) molasses 3/4 cup (180 mL) lemon juice 1/4 cup (60 mL) cider vinegar Cranberries, fresh mint sprigs or lemon slices for garnish.

Preparation Combine 3 cups water with ginger in a small saucepan.

Bring to a boil over mediumhigh heat. Boil for 2 minutes.

Remove from the heat, cover and let infuse for 15 minutes.

Strain the ginger-infused water into a pitcher, pressing on the ginger solids to extract all the liquid. Add honey (or birch syrup or maple syrup) and molasses; stir until dissolved. Stir in lemon juice, vinegar and the remaining 6 cups water.

Chill until very cold, at least 2 hours or overnight.

Stir the punch and serve in tall glasses over ice cubes. Garnish with berries, mint sprigs or lemon slices, if desired.

While it may not seem like the sexiest superfood in its tiny boring brown package, its many nutritional superpowers will soon have you thinking otherwise. High in fibre, omega-3’s, and lignans, just two to four tablespoons of ground flax a day can offer huge boosts to your health.

Full of Fibre Flax seeds are 28 per cent fibre. For one tablespoon of ground flaxseed, that’s about two grams of fibre. While that may not seem like much, an extra four to eight grams of fibre a day is quite a bit considering most of us fall chronically short of the recommended 25 to 35 daily grams. It seems that almost every day we learn about something else fibre is good or essential for, including balancing blood sugar, keeping us feeling full for longer, regulating digestion, and helping us maintain a healthy weight.

Musicians come from near and far to play the Blue Feather Music Festival this weekend

W

hitehorse-resident Selina Heyligers-Hare, or as she’s billed in the upcoming Blue Feather Music Festival, Selina H., is only 18 years old. She just graduated from high school. However, she has 13 years of experience making music and can hold her own on a big stage.

When Heyligers-Hare was five years old she started playing the piano. The first band she was in was her mom’s. She used to sit around and sing harmony during their bluegrass practices, until her mom asked her to join.

This was when she was 12.

Around that same time Grant Simpson of Frantic Follies asked Heyligers-Hare to be in the show.

“But I was so shy and terrified!” she says. Although today Heyligers-Hare is a leading lady in the show, Simpson started her out as an usher. As she describes it, he took her under his wing.

“He really believed in me,” she says.

When she was 14 years old Simpson organized a Cole Porter tribute show and put HeyligersHare on the bill. “There were all these amazing musicians and he just said, ‘Hey, let’s include Selina.’”

She started a four piece band

with her friends when she was 13 called Dead Simple, was part of an all-girls a capella group that raised $7,000 for the Because I am a Girl campaign and sold out the Arts Centre before the show even opened.

And this past summer she was adopted by the band Soul Migration, taking on the interim spot as lead singer while theirs was away on his honeymoon.

This is where Heyligers-Hare says she really got to explore the kind of rock and blues music she’s into.

At the Blue Feather Music Festival she’ll be playing all her own original songs, plus one Led Zeppelin cover, “because I wanted to push myself,” she says.

“Classic rock is kinda my thing” says Heyligers-Hare, who lists rock musicians like Ann and Nancy Wilson, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix among her inspirations. She describes her current music as a blend of rock and pop, “but what I really try to write is rock and blues stuff,” she says.

She also just finished recording her first demo CD with Green Needle Records, which is available for purchase for $5, and features Heyligers-Hare doing all her own vocals, guitar, and keyboard.

Selina Heyligers-Hare Perhaps a glimpse into what Heyligers-Hare’s future could hold is festival headliner Sass Jordan.

The Juno-award-winning-undeniable-rock-star of a woman has been making a living as a singersongwriter for the last 30 years.

Jordan started in her early teens, singing in a park in her Montreal hometown with her friends and a couple acoustic guitars.

Her most recent album, From Dusk ‘til Dawn, is meant to be reminiscent of those early years, where “passersby would stop to listen for a while, as we honed our skills in public,” she says. “(The album is about) that time of day when things are most uncertain, in a state of potentiality, right before the night manifests, with all its accompanying fear, passion, quiet, loneliness, dread, and dreams… It’s the time

we seem to be the most vulnerable emotionally.”

Another act at the festival is Memphis-based Deering & Down, a duo that got their start in Skagway and recorded their first album in Whitehorse in 2001.

They are vocalist Lahna Deering and guitarist Neil Down, and their sound is a unique breed of folk/rock/blues.

And then there’s Jimmy D. Lane, a man who practically grew up inside the famed Chicago Chess Records studio. He’s the son of blues legend Jimmy Rog-

ers, who frequently had his good friends Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf over at Lane’s childhood home.

Lane himself is in the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame, and has played with such greats as Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and B.B. King.

Although he didn’t start playing music in earnest until his midtwenties, he says it was a natural step to take after he left the military. And though he comes from musical greatness, it’s something he never takes for granted.

“I’ve been very fortunate,” he says, “and I appreciate everything I’ve been given.”

Lane’s music is on the side of rock, tempered with “just the right amount” of traditional blues.

“You can have too much water and too much fire,” says Lane, “but with the right amount of both, you can boil an egg.”

The Blue Feather Music Festival runs Friday, November 6th and Saturday, November 7th, with tickets ranging from $20 for kids to $40 for adults, or $70 for a weekend pass.

My Story as a

Special Olympics

Athlete

H

i my name is Mallory Ellen Pigage.

I have been an athlete with the Special Olympics Yukon for 16

years.

I really like Special Olympics because it is a time for me to socialize and do sports at the same time. The reason why it gives me the time to socialize with my friends that I don’t see in high school is because is I am not in high school anymore, and I don’t see them during the week.

My favourite sport is bowling because I have the highest girls average. My dad, Lee Pigage, is the coach for bowling.

My dad and I like to do a bowling game together to see who can beat whom. And I must say that sometimes it is my dad who beats me and other times it’s me who wins.

The sports that I am going to do this winter are curling and bowling.

The other part I like about the Special Olympics Program is we get to take trips to the National Games. I have a bucket list and one of the items on that list is to qualify to be able to travel with the bowling team to Nationals.

So far I have travelled to Brandon, Manitoba to compete in swimming for the 2006 National Games; to Abbotsford, British Columbia to compete in bocce for the 2009 summer provincial games; and to Langley, British Columbia to compete in athletics for the 2013 summer provincial games. I won medals at all three of those events.

I also participate in the Special Olympics Development Games, which happen once per year in the Yukon.

They are a lot of fun because you never know three things: 1. Who’s going to be on your team? 2. What colour of Tshirts your team will be wearing, and 3.

What new sport I will get to try.

Special Olympics Yukon has a program called Athlete Ambassador, and I was invited to be an Athlete Ambassador for a year. That program is a lot of fun because you get to do a day and half of learning how to deliver presentations and do public speaking.

During this year I have done two speeches. In April I got to do a 3-minute speech at the Special Olympics Festival fundraiser dinner. There were around 300 people in the audience, but it seemed like thousands.

The other speech I did was at the Volunteer Appreciation Night in September to present the Heather Miller Sport Volunteer of the Year award to Deb Sumner.

My other item on my bucket list is to travel to the Special Olympics World Games, like a fellow athlete of ours, Darby McIntyre. This summer Darby won a gold medal in the 5,000-metre race, and a bronze in the 1,500-metre race at the World Games in Los Angeles, California.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Special Olympics for giving all of us athletes these sport opportunities, and to try our best. Here is the athlete’s oath: Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me brave in the attempt.

Sometimes when I do a lousy bowling game I have to reflect back on the previous game, and try to do better the next time.

Overall, I know for a fact that Special Olympics Yukon is the best sports program that they could have.

I am Mallory Pigage I have an intellectual disability called CHARGE Syndrome.

CANADIAN NUTRITION P R E N ATA L P RO G R A M : The main target group is all expecting women and partners with children under the age of one year.

The program focuses on supporting parents to make healthy choices in order to give their babies the best possible start. There are weekly drop-ins every Wednesday from 12:00 – 2:00pm and every Thursday walks at the Canada Games Centre from 2:30 – 4:30pm. Whitehorse Health Centre provides a nurse to attend the program to help with questions and check baby’s weight & height once a month.

TÄ N S A K WÄT H Ä N YO U T H D I V E R S I O N A N D FA M I LY S U P P O RT: The main target group is provides an eight-week Diversion workshop program to youth between the ages of 12-17 on an annual basis, who are in conflict with the law.

The program believes that in order to reduce youth crime, recidivism, and violence in the homes it is instrumental to provide these youth with intervention strategies in order to “break the cycle”. The program incorporates the teaching of traditional ways by strengthening of relationships between families and youth. A Family Support Worker is provided for youth and their families.

WO M E N O F W I S D O M : The main target group is for Aboriginal women; however, all women are encouraged to attend.

The Women of Wisdom program is a bi-weekly traditional teachings program for women. A facilitator, Elder, and dinner are provided during the bi-weekly program. It is a very welcoming environment, and all women are encouraged to join.

E M E RG E N C Y A F T E R - H O U R S O U T R E AC H S H E LT E R : The main target group is for youth age 17- 23 years old. Youth under the age of 17 are referred to the Government of Yukon on call Social Worker. Parents/Caregivers of these youth are also contacted.

The Youth Emergency Shelter provides safe, clean accommodations for youth when needed, and to assist them in reconnecting with family, friends and/or the community. Assistance in finding safe, affordable housing is provided with the Outreach Worker.

WO M E N ’ S L E G A L A DVO C AT E : The main target group is women.

The Women’s Legal Advocate develops and delivers support services to women involved in the legal/justice system including criminal justice, victim support, child protection, landlord and tenancy issues, wellness court, and family legal matters. The Women’s Legal Advocate also helps develop and maintain community partnerships and collaborative relationships that are integral to the success of the position.

Folk Art in the Forest with Nellie Dale

A Budding Artist W

hen my nephew was six he ran a grocery store.

He sorted cans of fruit, vegetables and soup. He priced each can and stocked shelves.

Then he sold the products to his sister and brother. He was able to add the prices and make change in his head. At a very young age his mathematical abilities shone bright. As a young man, Jimmy received a Bachelor of Commerce Honours and his Certified General Accountant degree.

Sometimes it is difficult to see a child’s potential. But not Jimmy.

My friend Ella Germain is one of those with her ability shining brightly. She is not a mathematician, but an artist.

Her mother, Janice Hall, agrees with me. Ella sees the world through an artist’s palette of col-

our. Ella is always looking for new ideas for creativity, for different mediums for expressing her art.

When she plays outside she is always on the lookout for craft materials and colour combinations.

Ella’s artistic talents were noticed early. At day care she was usually found at the craft centre. Her first project was a pencil drawing. She loved creating paper crafts and painting pictures.

Today she loves art history as well. Her inspiration these days includes the Group of Seven and Van Gogh.

Ella is seven years old. She is in Grade Two at Whitehorse Elementary. There, art is embedded in the curriculum. Last year the whole school worked with the Yukon Salmon Subcommittee to create the fantastic fish mural

still seen along the fence of the school. Ella explained the creative project to me at a recent visit to her “studio” home.

While some children’s talents are overlooked, not Ella’s. Her parents recognize and celebrate her abilities. She has attended many art camps over the last few years. This past summer she participated in the Arts Underground art camp. She has participated in the Yukon Arts Centre kids’ program, too.

She is currently enrolled in the Fine Arts for Kidz program offered at Vanier Catholic Secondary School on Saturday mornings. The program is sponsored by the City of Whitehorse Parks and Community Development Department. The class is very popular with young artists. The program introduces

Northern Pike is delicious when properly prepared

ust think of all the salmon or tuna sandwiches you’ve had over your lifetime. Well, with a small amount of effort you can do the same with pike.

Sadly, pike have got a bad reputation with many people and even one of their nicknames, “slough shark,” says a lot about how some people think about them. They

are aggressive fighters on the line, and they are also delicious prepared in various ways.

Following these simple steps will reward you with another tasty sandwich filler or dip that will keep your friends guessing what it is. The tomato soup adds flavour for sure, but also colours the fish so it can be mistaken for salmon.

A Dispatch from the Frankfurt Book Fair

T

he Frankfurt Book Fair is the biggest book fair in the literary world. Publishers, agents, authors and readers from all over the world come to the five day event. It is a place for business, readings, culture and discussion. This year 300,000 visitors came to the book fair.

During the event there are many literature prizes given to international authors. The LiBeraturpreis is an honour for women writers from Asia, Africa and Latin America who are writing about freedom. Canadian writer Madeleine Thien won the LiBeraturpreis 2015 at the international book fair in Frankfurt for her book Dogs at the Perimeter. It is a haunting novel about the genocide of the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s in Cambodia.

The novel is set in Canada and describes the lives of four protagonists who have to deal with their memories of the violence in Cambodia. One of them is Jamie,

a medical researcher in Montreal.

When her friend and mentor, a neurologist, vanishes, her own life unravels. She leaves her husband and child and moves into the apartment of her friend. She finds out the fragments of his past that intersect with her own upbringing in Cambodia.

The LiBeraturpreis is an honour for women writers from Asia, Africa and Latin America who are writing about freedom.

Thien said that to understand the history of Canada, people have to understand the history of many countries. “It’s not only the rich who have many homes,” she said on stage after accepting the award.

Thien grew up in Vancouver; her parents are from China and Malaysia. As a child she grew up in an environment where many things were left unsaid.

The LiBeraturpreis jury said that Thien won the prize because she brings the past and the present together. Escape and expulsion are burning issues today.

Earlier the book fair started with Indian-British author Salman Rushdie, who came to the opening press conference and gave a speech about human rights and literature. He said that without the freedom of speech there is no freedom at all.

He also said that one of the tasks of literature is to question family, religion and politics. Doing

Because of the controversial novel he published in 1988, called The Satanic Verses, Rushdie had to live underground. The Iranian government backed a fatwa, which is a judgment under the Islamic law, against Rushdie in 1989 that still remains. Because of his appear-

ance publishers from Iran refused to attend the book fair.

Rushdie just published a new book, Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights, which is a novel about the way we live now, inspired by 2000 years of storytelling tradition.

Indonesia is also a country with a long story-telling tradition.

That country was the Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 Guest of Honour. It presented itself under the motto 17,000 Islands of Imagination.

Visitors could learn about Indonesian authors and that in that country reading is a luxury for some people, since not everyone can afford to buy books.

started learning how to cook about 10 years ago, when, as a poor university student, I came to the stunning realization that good food is very expensive.

One of the very first cook books I ever bought myself was a second hand copy of The Tassajara Bread Book. While it would be many years before I started experimenting with wild sourdough cultures or successfully made my first pain au levain, this eminently practical book helped me see feeding myself and others as less a physical act of necessity and more a spiritual act of love and devotion. And nothing says love like a big plate of hot, freshlybaked, flaky biscuits on a cold winter morning.

The following recipe is an adaption of the original Flaky Biscuits recipe from the Tassajara Cookbook, which I have made more times than I can count. They can be made without the cheese and herbs as well, where they make a wonderful cold breakfast with jam and nut butter.

*You can easily make these biscuits gluten-free by substituting the all-purpose flour for glutenfree all purpose and add 1.5 tsps of xanthan gum. If you do this, add an extra ¼ tsp of baking powder and give the dough a couple extra turns when you’re rolling it out to help it develop. You honestly won’t know the difference. **You don’t have to add the blue cheese – feta is nice, too, or whatever is in the fridge that needs using up.

Flaky biscuits are how hungry people say “I love you.”

INGREDIENTS 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour* 3 tsp baking powder pinch of coarse sea salt ½ cup of cold butter 2 large eggs ¼ cup of yogurt or sour cream cut with 2 Tbsp of cold water 1 tsp dried rosemary ¼ tsp cracked black pepper ¼-½ cup of blue cheese** METHOD • Preheat the oven to 450ºF. • Combine dry ingredients in a medium-sized bowl and mix.

Measure the butter, making sure it’s as cold as possible, and the cut into small (about 1 inch) sized chunks. Add the butter like this to the dry ingredients, and then, using a pastry cutter (or your hands, which I find much more effective) work the butter into the dry ingredients, breaking it up and rubbing it in, until it has a soft, loose texture and the butter is fully incorporated.

• Then, make a well in the centre of the mixture with your fingers.

• In a separate bowl, break the eggs (the fresher the eggs, the better the biscuits) and whisk lightly. Then add the yogurt and water and mix into a thick liquid. Pour the liquid into the well you made in the butter/dry ingredient mixture and mix lightly with a spoon or spatula. Add the cheese in here, crumbling it up so it’s evenly distributed, and mix again. Knead this mixture lightly with your hands a few times to bring it together - if it’s sticking a lot to your fingers, add a little flour, but if it seems tough, it needs a bit more water.

• On a floured counter-top or cutting board (I lay out wax paper, to help ease cleanup) roll out the dough once with a rolling pin, flattening it until it is about ¾ inch thick. Turn the dough, fold it like a sheet of paper, and then roll it flat again. Do this four times. On the final time, roll the dough flat again.

• Taking a round cookie cutter or the mouth of a glass dipped in water, cut out the biscuits. It should make between 12-14 large sized biscuits, but you can make them smaller or larger as wish (although you will need to adjust the baking time accordingly).

• Place the cut biscuits on parchment paper on a cookie sheet, giving them about a ½ inch between each, so that they have room to poof up. Lightly sprinkle with coarse salt and bake for 10-12 minutes. They should be golden brown on the bottom and pale on the top when they are done.

• Eat them hot out of the oven with butter, served alongside a thick soup or stew.

Harvesting Porcupine Caribou Near Old Crow

and bring in freshly cut willows to place the caribou meat on. They also make sure the wood is ready, the freezer is clean and ready, and that the freezer bags are also ready.

When the men bring the caribou that is when the women’s work begins. All the butchering is mostly done by the women. Parts of the caribou are separated by purpose. The meat can be boiled, roasted, fried, ground, and made into jerky. All is stored for the long winter months.

Making caribou jerky is the last task for women since this process takes about a week. Wood stove heat is the best way to dry caribou jerky. The meat is hung in thin slices from long wood poles hanging horizontally from the ceiling in people’s homes. Recently I have become aware that some spices are being added to the caribou jerky to add flavour, yet that was not something that was done in the past.

Some of us use traditional knowledge given to us by elders to tenderize the caribou neck and use the meat to make pemmican.

Pemmican is made with caribou meat and mixed with melted caribou fat shaped into small balls (golf ball size) and frozen. It is taken out of the freezer when needed on a long winter trip on the land; it is very filling and easy to carry.

Living in a small remote community like Teechit, Yukon, is very special to me. It allows me to find myself and to put into practice all that I was taught from my parents and elders in my surroundings. The resources are right here: in the air, on the land, and in the rivers.

limate change in the North makes many changes to the growth of our plants, and confuses our animals with more wind, rain and fog. It also affects the river levels. They are constantly rising and dropping, resulting in fishnets needing to be taken out of the river. This constant fluctuation affects our ability to fish.

In the past two years the Porcupine Caribou herd has gradually changed its natural migration route. The Porcupine Caribou is the main food source for the Vuntut Gwitchin people. Each spring, the Porcupine Caribou migrate to their calving ground. There is always excitement in the air when the Porcupine Caribou is on its migration route.

Usually, the cow and calf migrate first. Hunters are not allowed to hunt the cow or calf. Our aboriginal people in the North, here in Teechit (Old Crow), are serious and considerate of the younger generation and only hunt for what they need. Some hunters are thoughtful, kind, and care enough for those less fortunate and hunt for them, as well.

In the past, people who hunted for others only received a word of thanks. Times have changed. Today, lunch, oil, and gas or something needs to be given in return.

In the winter, despite the weather, if a particular household did not harvest and have no caribou meat supply, then friends and relatives usually help out. But in February and March some men will go out to hunt for a day. Winter hunting gear consists of a Ski-doo, gas, oil, gun, shells, tarp, matches, knives, axe, tent and lunch, too! In the summer the Ski-doo is replaced by a good boat and motor.

When caribou is harvested, the men skin and butcher the caribou on site. The caribou is then taken home and delivered to a cache where a fire is made to smoke the meat. The men’s job is now done.

h, arnica. Renowned for its power to soothe sore muscles, sprains and bruises, and a common gateway drug into the wonderful world of the do-ityourself apothecary.

Most often it is in the form of arnica oil, where the bright yellow flower heads are wilted and then used to infuse oil that can be used in massage or further processed into a salve or cream.

One place it doesn’t get used though, is in food.

While dandelion petals make for a wonderfully cheery muffin, or can be strewn over the top of a cake to make it divine, arnica embodies that exciting plant power in which a compound that is extremely healing in one form can be fatal in another.

I was surprised to learn when I opened up my Flora of the Yukon (the Yukoner’s plant bible) that there are 11 species in this genus recorded in our territory.

I am familiar with two varieties from my yearly collecting activities, both subspecies of Arnica angustifolia. A third, heart-shaped arnica (Arnica cordifolia), will be familiar to devotees of Bev Gray’s The Boreal Herbal. She tells us that the name comes from the greek arnakis (sheepskin) in reference to the soft, fuzzy leaves.

Those leaves were the source of constant worry the first season I discovered arnica’s toxic impact on our inside parts – I was terrified I would mistakenly harvest arnica leaves instead of arrow-leaved coltsfoot for tea early in the season before the blooms appeared.

I haven’t poisoned anyone yet, and I learned a good lesson in getting to know plants across the whole season, not just when the most obvious identifying parts are visible. I wonder if there is any link between the sheepskin reference and one of arnica’s alternate names, wolf’s bane.

The very thing that makes arnica healing is, of course, also what renders it toxic. After all, any compound that alters us physiologically has the potential to be dangerous in too large a quantity.

This is why when learning both edible and medicinal plants it is important to pay attention to the parts of plant used, methods of preparation and administration.

You’d have to ingest a lot of flowers to kill you, but keep in mind that preparations are more concentrated.

Induce vomiting and get medical help immediately.

in alcohol. Another consideration is that some interact with our own systems only via certain types of contact, such as through the skin, airways, or digestive tract.

The active component of arnica, called helenalin, has different effects on the body depending on how it are administered: it is wonderfully soothing when absorbed through the skin into tired or sore muscle tissue, and nastily irritating if brought into contact with the digestive tract.

I imagine most people don’t have many problems with this kind of multiple personality when buying preparations: this is labelled a tea, so I will drink it; this is

labelled a foot rub, so I will not.

When you get into harvesting and preparing your own concoctions it becomes more important to understand what you are actually working with in a healing plant, how it can be extracted from the plant, and how it should be used with the body.
