ttention all lovers, poets and dreamers: this holiday season The Bard is returning to the Whitehorse stage.

The Guild Hall will launch its second show of the season on Nov. 26 with Shakespeare’s classic comedy Twelfth Night, Or What You Will.

The play was first performed in 1602 and takes a comedic spin on mistaken identities, love, and all around mischief.

It centres on a young lady named Viola (played by Krisandra Reid) who, with her twin brother Sebastian (played by Clair Mooney) are involved in a shipwreck off the coast of Illyria. After losing Sebastian and fearing him dead, Viola meets up with a sea captain (played by Telek Rogan ) who helps her gain the service of the Duke Orsino (played by Logan Larkin by disguising her as a man named Cesario.

Viola falls in love with the Duke who only has eyes for the Countess Olivia (played by Sarah Ott).

He enlists Cesario (Viola) as an intermediary to profess his love to her. The countess then falls for Cesario, not knowing it is Viola in disguise, and a 17th century love triangle ensues.

This is not the only comic device that Shakespeare offers in Twelfth Night as there is a host of characters who deploy their own mischievous agendas throughout the play.

Yukon Art Centre Artistic Director Eric Epstein returns to the director’s chair for the Guild’s production, bringing his love and knowledge of Shakespeare’s work to life with a modern contemporary and Yukon twist: Setting it in a “Yukon lodge” and placing it in a world of “hip, urban Yukoner lumber sexual” as Epstein puts it.

Epstein will also be using a variety of multimedia techniques for the show that inspired him in Ger-

many this summer.

“I did this workshop with a group called the Gob Squad Collective out of Berlin, and they had a lot of fun using tech,” Epstein says. “I thought this is something I’d like to use, to help bridge the gap, between the audience and the show.”

Epstein is no stranger to the Guild Hall. He was hired from Vancouver to direct a Guild show in 1984. He fell in love with the territory and spent most of the 1980s living here. In 1999 Epstein officially made Whitehorse his home becoming a permanent fixture in the Yukon arts scene. He was also the Guild Halls Artistic Director from 2001-2010.

Epstein has a simple answer to why Shakespeare’s plays have stood the test of time. “Because they’re quite brilliant,” he says.

“They tell stories very well, from a point of view, in narrative they’re quite compelling, they explore human action. And delve into many aspects of human behaviour” The cast is comprised of 12 ac-

tors who are new and returning to the Guild Stage and they’ve taken a collaborative approach helping to create their sound and tech for the production.

“We have a wide range of extraordinarily talented and hardworking people,” Epstein says.

For those who think Shakespeare may not be their cup of tea, Epstein encourages them to check it out.

“There’s no stuffiness about it, we’re having a lot of fun with people doing this play, not taking ourselves too seriously and keeping the tone of the play very playful,” he says.

Twelfth Night or What you Will runs Nov. 26 to Dec. 12 at the Guild Hall, which is located at 27 - 14 Ave. in Porter Creek. The play starts at 8 p.m. sharp.

It provides educational tools, based on cognitive behaviour therapy, in a fun, interactive way.

Wells clarified that, “participants aren’t expected to talk,” but he’s found that during the current course, there’s been a lot of sharing of stories, tips and coping strategies.

There’s also been a lot of laughter.

The course is eight weekly sessions of 1.5 hours each, with a maximum of 14 people, plus the facilitator. The sessions include booklets to use as a resource at home, and to practice the techniques learned in the course.

The cost of the 8-week course is $200. Program Director Juliette AngleHart-Zedda, noted that they offer gift certificates. She suggested that it would be, “a unique gift… to cover the cost of the course for someone they know that could benefit from it.” The gift certificates are available year round.

With sessions teaching how to chill, build self-esteem and be happier, it’s something that could benefit us all, in any season.

The Mental Health Association of Yukon is offering a course to teach people a different way of thinking. In the course, called Living Life to the Full, participants learn how their thoughts impact their emotions and behaviour. More importantly, they learn skills to be able to change them.

The course is one of the ways this volunteer association is promoting the positive mental health of all Yukoners.

Board Chair, Ray Wells, explains that the Mental Health Association of Yukon wants to eliminate the stigma around mental health.

“Most of us have, or know someone who has struggled with depression,” Wells says.

“This course teaches you that you have options on how you think about events in your life… it helps put it in perspective.”

Developed in Scotland, the course Living Life to the Full has been offered in Canada for the last five years through the Canadian Mental Health Association. The Yukon association decided to bring this course here because of the course’s proven success. It’s

Young fiddlers play to a packed ballroom at the Odd Fellows Hall on Nov. 7 working with some friends of mine that I reconnected with on my fall trip back east after not seeing them at all since about 1974.

The numbers at this event were amazing. These evenings often start out with 30 to 50 people, but parents and friends will pack the place when the kids are the main attraction.

There were other acts that night. I would normally have been one of them, but there was a full list of performers and I had another event to attend, so I left my guitar back at the coat rack and just enjoyed the performances for the 90 minutes I was able to stay.

The other nice thing about these events is that they raise money for worthy causes. This

one raised $625 to help send the Grades 10, 11 and 12 classes on a trip to France later in this school year. Other events have raised money to assist in travel during medical emergencies, and when fires have damaged people’s homes.

The next event will be on Saturday, Dec. 5 and the proceeds will go to the Big Brothers and Sisters organization. I plan to play at least one Christmassy song.

ovember 7 turned out to be an incredibly busy evening for anyone involved in community events in Dawson.

There was the closing banquet for the Youth Art Enrichment program, which I mentioned here a few weeks ago. There was an outdoor art installation on the dyke and waterfront called The Deep Dark, involving contrasts of light and darkness.

There was also the annual Dawson City Museum Auction, during which the courtroom on the second floor was packed with people wearing pajamas (there’s always a costume theme).

Then there was the open mic/ coffee house at the Odd Fellows Hall, a monthly opportunity for those who like to perform or listen to music in a coffee house setting and spend a good two hours or so in each other’s company.

The coffee house on Nov. 7 was particularly good because it was full of young performers, starting with the young fiddlers that the North Klondyke Highway Music Society has been training up here in Dawson for the last several years.

These seven kids, and a few older folk as well, put on a fine show to kick off the evening.

Then there were a couple of very young solo acts who were brave enough to face the crowd – estimated at 125 people that night – to show what they’ve been learning to do.

They were followed by a mixed group of high school students, who have been developing skills on guitar, piano, drums and bass and forming themselves into various smaller groups within the larger class. So there were solos, trios and the full quintet filling up the roster for the evening.

It’s great to see the young people coming up doing pretty much the same thing that I started doing when I was about their ages,

Soldiering on in the Cold War Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) is available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library

N

o gadgets, guns or trophy girl in sight – John le Carré’s spy universe is stripped of glamour, but all the more fascinating for his intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the inner circle that fought for nebulous ground in the Cold War. The film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, released in 2011 and available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library, is based on the novel of the same name, the first in le Carre’s trilogy about George Smiley’s hunt for Karla, a Soviet spymaster.

In early 1970s Britain, Control (John Hurt), the head of the agency referred to as the Circus (le Carre’s version of Britain’s military intelligence agency MI5), sends one of his men, Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong), on a covert mission to Budapest. Things go wrong and Prideaux is shot and presumed dead.

In the aftermath of the international scandal, Control is exiled from the Circus, taking George Smiley (Gary Oldman), his mildmannered right-hand man, with him into an unwelcome early retirement.

But word comes to a government official that there’s a mole

– a spy – in place at the Circus and he brings Smiley in to investigate.

It’s a tricky operation, confined to Smiley and the only two people he can trust, Peter Guilliam (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Mendel, a jack-of-all-tradecraft.

Smiley is following in the path of Control, who had dubbed the main suspects as Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Poorman and Beggarman.

Smiley knows them well: they’re members of the team he worked with at the Circus. One of them, Beggarman, is himself.

The adapted screenplay, by Peter Straughan and Bridget O’Connor, carves a streamlined narrative from the novel’s plot for the film. Some of le Carré’s twists and turns are lost, while the emotional costs of living in subterfuge come into focus; trapped in solitary lives, the characters are only able to trust each other – except that maybe they shouldn’t.

“I do not want to end up like you lot,” says Ricki Tarr (Tom Hardy), wistfully contemplating his vanishing options.

Tarr is the source of the devastating revelation that sets Smiley on his search. Like Prideaux – who turns up alive but put out to pasture by the Circus – Tarr is caught

in the middle of the fallout from betrayal of the mole inside the Circus.

“I’m innocent. Within reason,” he says.

That same ambivalence is present in Smiley. “Don’t you think it’s time to recognize there is as little worth on your side as there is on mine?” he says wearily to Karla in their one and only meeting, seen in flashback.

Yet those reservations don’t prevent him from doing whatever it takes to protect the Circus, if not the Circus workers.

Director Tomas Alfredson creates a unique visual signature for the film that’s appropriate to the early 1970s period, using a specific colour palette and other motifs.

Those period details aren’t overworked, but it’s fun to see high international intrigue unfold through acres of paper files, surreptitious calls placed via rotary telephones, and George Formby on the radio.

How To Transfer Assets To Your Adult Children Interested in transferring assets to your children? There are two routes you can take-pass assets along while you’re alive, or leave them to your heirs when you die.

Not everybody wants to wait until they die to transfer assets. You might want to give cash, property or investments today to help your children with their finances.

A gift of cash is one of the easiest ways to transfer assets while you’re alive. Cash can help your children buy their first home, start a business, fund a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or help meet just about any other financial need.

If your child is 18 or older, there are no tax consequences for you or the recipient when you give money. And by giving cash now, you’ll transfer future tax liability to your children.

You may have other assets to pass along-such as securities, real estate, or business interests. In that case, things can be more complicated. The transfer of assets is unlikely to create immediate tax consequences for your child, but it can result in tax liabilities for you.

Transferred assets are generally deemed for tax purposes to have been sold (a “deemed disposition”), even if no actual sale takes place. The increase in the value of those assets is a capital gain and may increase your tax bill. The good news is that appreciation from the day of the transfer is taxable in the child’s hands.

You may be able to reduce taxes by giving assets to your child over a number of years, instead of all at once. A large gift can raise your marginal tax rate, and consequently the amount of tax you pay. Capital gains taxes can also be reduced if you have capital losses in the year of the gift or have unused capital losses from previous years.

Something else to consider when giving assets is that you lose control over them. If you want to retain control, consider setting up a trust to transfer assets to children while you’re alive and appoint yourself as trustee.

But you’ll still be on the hook for income taxes. In most cases you’ll pay capital gains taxes on the appreciation in value until the day assets are transferred. Depending on how you set up the trust, you may also be subject to taxes on income earned by those assets. Seek legal and tax advice when considering this arrangement.

tanding in the hallway of the Horwood’s Mall, looking into Climate Clothing, you don’t immediately see the First Nation influence in the neat rows of clothing.

You see earth tones, trending toward the dark due to the season, and little surprises here and there in a comfortable store.

But First Nation teachings lives in the business philosophy of its owner and operator, Lorraine Stick.

“When I was old enough for responsibility, I got my own back pack, or pack sack as I called it, with my own snares and my own traps, and I was totally responsible for that,” says Stick, who is a member of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations.

“My Mom would just watch me set the snares and not say anything. If I set it wrong, it was a lesson for me to learn when I went to the snares the next day and

didn’t catch anything... then she would tell me why.”

The traditional lifestyle is set in her bones.

“I was raised to live off the land; the land was my grocery store as a kid,” she says. “I am so comfortable in the bush. I can walk in the bush and not be terrified because I know the environment is going to take care of me.”

She laughs when reminded that the retail business can be a jungle. But she has a philosophical approach to the challenge of retail.

“Honour yourself and who you are and believe that your product is so good that it will sell and you will be rewarded for that... and your customers will be rewarded, too.”

Stick’s goal is to offer clothing that people feel good about wearing.

“All-natural clothing is better for you,” Stick says. “It allows

your skin to breathe, it is more comfortable, your body is not absorbing all of those gases and all of those other chemicals that clothing can have.”

It is good for the planet, too.

“Synthetics never break down in the landfills, especially polyester, and are probably one of the worst things for the environment you can buy,” Stick says. “I believe in giving back to the environment for what the environment did for me as a child.”

Finding suppliers who feel the same way she does was as easy as a Google search. Stick now deals with agencies who deal only in natural fibres and can source most of her clothing from Canadian manufacturers because supporting our economy is important, too.

“They are really easy to deal with,” says Stick. “They are honest and they want to make you happy so they work with you.

Besides the soft-feeling fabrics of the clothing, there are also Blue Planet Recycled Eyewear, hand-crafted soaps, eco lunch accessories and baby clothes.

Under a wide window that looks toward the Yukon River across 1st Avenue sits a box of toys ready for young customers who want to keep busy while their parents shop.

A customer, Lorraine Hoyt, stops to chat: “I like to look at the clothes,” she says. “It is a lot of different stuff, intriguing stuff.”

Stick sees her retail neighbours in the Horwood’s Mall as a good fit. Whether it is cheese, toys or a good cup of coffee and scone, the shops attract customers who appreciate quality.

And Stick had a goal to ensure customers would find clothing that cannot be purchased elsewhere in Whitehorse.

“It is frustrating to go into another store and see the same products,” she says. “I wanted to offer something different.”

Growing up in the community

of Aishihik she was never told that success was defined as owning her own business.

“For me, I was in residential school, and it was my determination to get my Grade 12 and nobody was going to stop me... that is where I got my determination,” Stick says. “I graduated at a time when a lot of us did not graduate.

It was pounded into our heads to marry a man who is a knight in shining armour and he will take care of us the rest of our lives.”

Stick had other ideas.

“I set goals for myself and now I am building a successful business,” she says.

But how did she know that allnatural clothing would be successful in Whitehorse?

She laughs: “Because there are a lot of granola eaters here.”

Climate Clothing is open Mondays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Berry Picking in Old Crow

Taking time out of your home and things you need to do allows you to rejuvenate your whole being and you always feel better when you come back home: feeling healthy and having a bucket of berries, what an accomplishment! Before you know it, you come to the realization that you have more blueberries than you need.

By the middle of August, it is time to check out the cranberries. I am very familiar with the cranberry patches. I go where I know others will not go to pick them.

As with all the berries, I usually go with friends or family members.

Being considerate and respectful of others is present when berry picking.

You only pick what you need and what you don’t need for your own use you share with others, especially those who as are too ill or unable to kM c i R : pick berries themselves. o t o Ph When berry picking season is over, I feel once again that I have successfully accomplished my goals for the summer. any people enjoy harvesting berries in preparation for the long winter months. Although I have a busy schedule as a caregiver at my family day home, Trinin Tsul Zheh (which means the home of the little children in the Gwitchin language), each summer beginning in July we start picking berries.

Cloud or salmon berries are the first berries I pick. My friends and I get a ride to Crow Mountain and walk the rest of the way to the cloud berry patch. We always wonder what we will find each year. Are the berries ready to be picked? Are there lots of them?

When the berries are abundant, we pick a couple of buckets at a time; we easily spend hours berry picking.

We know that other people know the area and the berry patches, too, and may want to harvest the berries, as well. So we leave the patch for a while and return a couple of weeks later to the same area to see if there are any berries left or that are now ready to be harvested.

Picking berries on Crow Mountain allows me to leave behind what I don’t need in my life. I become aware and connected with the beauty of the land, the freshness of the air, and I feel so at peace. Smells such as fresh Labrador tea, different berries and numerous plants fill the air. The colours are vivid and the ground looks like an old fashioned patch quilt.

The openness of the mountain allows me to see as far as Second Mountain or Berry Mountain giving me a sense of security and safety.

e go traveling so we can have new experiences.

So we can see new places, experience new tastes and be exposed to new smells and sights.

The greatness of traveling lies in the fact that it can stretch our concept of what is normal and regular and bring us the opportunity to be immersed in new environments.

However, if our traveling time gets spent thinking the same old thoughts and having our same ordinary everyday worries, we are really going to miss out on the potential that visiting new places has to offer us.

Sometimes when we are traveling the comparing, judging mind can be our worst companion. This is the mind that tells us, “Why did I even come here?” “This experience isn’t as good as last year’s” and “I wish I was somewhere else.”

These types of thoughts, which are so common and normal, are a real buzzkill. They take us out of the direct experience of being right where we are and lead us down a complaining path of thinking we should be somewhere else.

My favourite definition of suffering is wanting things to be different from what they are and it is very easy to enter this type of state when we are traveling.

When we are traveling sometimes we wish we were a little more comfortable, or we miss certain people or we doubt we have traveled to the right place.

But there is another choice and that is utilizing the technique of mindfulness.

Another way I like to think of

Noticing what is around us is a great way to break off our habitual relationship with our thoughts and really be more in the moment.

Traveling is the perfect opportunity for noticing because we are somewhere new, and since there is so many new things to notice while we are traveling there can be a freshness and aliveness to the experience we don’t find when we are at home.

This is such a great opportunity.

Noticing is different than judging, analyzing, studying or comparing.

When we are practicing mindfulness we choose to not decide if we like or dislike what we are noticing. We don’t have to asso-

ciate what we are noticing with other things we have noticed in the past.

Instead we just notice and experience our surroundings. We shift our attention from thought to sight or from thought to smell or listening.

It is kind of like thoughts go to the back part of our awareness and the direct sensory experience of the moment comes into the front part of our awareness. This can take a little practice.

And traveling is such a great opportunity to practice being in the world in this way.

One of the great things about living in the Yukon is being in the company of so many terrific adventurers. I love that Yukoners get up and go all the time. It

might just be camping down the road, but for many Yukoners it is traveling to the other side of the world.

All of these traveling experiences can easily be enhanced by a generous sprinkling of mindfulness practice. From the gate at the airport to the mountain the peak there are always things to notice, always things to experience, we just have to choose to shift our attention away from our thoughts and back to the sensory awareness of the present moment.

I couldn’t decide but I knew there are many restaurants in Whitehorse from which to choose.

But how to choose? Being the well-ordered, disciplined person that I am (read perfectionist), it made perfect sense to me to begin at, well, the beginning and make my way through our city’s eating establishments in order. In the order of the alphabet, beginning, of course, with the letter A. I chose an agreeable companion who had completely different

eating habits than I and off we set, earlier this month, to check out Antoinette’s. We were pleasantly surprised.

We entered an oasis of colour, soft lights, soothing music and subtle aromas of food being prepared. The original artwork, the bright cotton tablecloths and the shining cutlery all served to make us feel like honoured guests in a room specially set up just for us.

We made our way to our corner table, relaxing more with each step.

Our server was friendly and at

ease, welcoming us to take our time and enjoy.

The menu offers choices that easily accommodate special diets – such as vegetarian and gluten free – without changing the dishes. The prices were middle of the road and good value.

Our meals were excellent. I had the pureed carrot and coconut cream soup, together with an amazing salad.

My friend had the lemon chicken entree. The food was well prepared and tasty and the portions were just right.

An amazing and delicious salad We had a bit of excitement trying to surreptitiously photograph our food without using flashes or excited chirps of frustration. It didn’t work, of course, and we broke into a fit of giggles.

The place was jumping with conversation and laughter and lilting background music. I was glad I’d had the presence of mind to make reservations. And even though they were obviously very busy, our server was attentive yet unobtrusive and we were left to enjoy our meal in each other’s company, without feeling like we were being ignored.

We felt completely at home and well looked after; it was like being at the house of a friend.

We had excellent coffee to complete our meal and tarried over the last bits of our evening in

such a delightful venue. We were left to our enjoyment and relaxation and I was surprised to find that, as we gathered our coats, we had been there for over two hours.

Antoinette’s is located at 41214th Avenue in downtown Whitehorse. It is open Monday to Saturday, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with live music each Monday and Saturday.

I look forward to summer when Antoinette’s will also be open for lunch.

The place has character, personality and comfort, just like a good friend.

A Star on Stage, with His Heart on the Ranch

rett Kissel, a rising star in country music, will be bringing his Airwaves tour to the Yukon Arts Centre on Monday, Nov. 30.

Kissel is happy to include the Yukon during his 2015-16 tour.

“I wanted to make this a truly Canadian tour, that’s why I’m excited to hit all the provinces and territories. I’m especially excited to come up to Whitehorse,” he says of his first time visit.

Kissel’s star is rising fast. Born and raised on a cattle ranch in Flat Lake, Alberta, he got his first guitar at age six, and released his first album, Keepin’ It Country, when he was just 12 years old.

At age 16, Kissel was nominated for the Chevy Trucks Rising Star Award at the Canadian Country Music Association Awards, making him the youngest CCMA nominee in the history of the awards show.

After signing with Warner Music Canada in 2013, Kissel’s debut single, “Started with a Song,” was released, and the rest has been a meteoric rise up the country ladder, including touring Canada with Brad Paisley, winning two Association of Country Music in Alberta Awards awards, a Juno Award, and three Canadian Country Music

Awards.

Kissel now lives in Nashville, Tennessee. His life has become fast paced and competitive, and though he’s thriving, he’s still burning the candle at both ends.

He says that regrouping at the ranch he grew up on is important to him.

“I love to go back home to put it all in perspective,” he says. “If it wasn’t for the farm, I wouldn’t find my centre.”

He recharges by breathing in the quiet life, riding his quad and chasing cows.

“It’s my happy place.”

While he maintains that he can write songs anywhere, he usually doesn’t while he’s back at the ranch.

“I’m focusing on recharging,” he says. “I take the memories and experiences of home back with me to the office and then write the songs.”

Even though Kissel has found chart success and has had the opportunity to meet such legends as George Strait and Garth Brooks, he says he still pinches himself when he sits down and works with multiGrammy award winning songwriters to come up with ideas.

“It’s incredible,” he says.

Kissel’s nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic, his connection to his audience while performing on stage and his love of staying in touch with his fans via social media is paying off. His latest single, “Airwaves,” reached number one on the Canada Country chart in September 2015.

Yet despite all his recent achievements, Kissel remains humble. He considers himself very fortunate to be a 25-year-old guy touring the world and says that at heart, he’s still the same kid who grew up on that cattle ranch in Alberta.

“Everything has gone so fast, but I’m still the same guy who gets up in the morning, puts on his cowboy boots and starts writing songs.”

Sauer expressed her hesitance to Archbould.

“Cathie said ‘I know, but we aren’t going to take up a lot of your time, and you’re going to regret not having pictures of this stage of your life.’ I was already grateful the day of (the photo shoot.)”

Archbould’s ability to put people at ease was immediately evident.

“I think that’s the art of a fabulous photographer – someone like Cathie who is so good at making me feel really comfortable. It makes a huge difference,” Sauer says.

Now that the shoot is long done and the photos turned out well, the session is a testament to that period in her life and Sauer has no regrets.

“It was the best thing I could have done,” she says. “I’m so grateful to my friends who pushed me, and I’m incredibly thankful to Cathie for making it happen.”

rops, actors, lighting, sound, marketing; these are some of the small but numerous little details which turn a “piece” into a “show.” These things need hands to make them happen and cost money - sometimes a lot of money.

Many of the shows put on in the Yukon are created by homegrown production company run by

your friends and neighbours. So how do small production companies without big budgets manage to make it work?

Most small theatre companies are run as non-profits, even the Yukon Arts Centre, says Arlin McFarlane, whose newly-created theatre company, Whitehorse Independent Theatre (WIT) recently debuted My Brain is Plastic, in

Watson Lake. Being a non-profit entity, she says, is often part of the necessary criteria to apply for many levels of government grants and funding on which WIT and many other performance companies rely.

“Theatre is almost always run a non-profit, because that’s the way the business is set up,” she says.

Funding is often granted on a per project basis and delivered in lump sums so often companies must complete an application and wait to hear back from the funding bodies before they even know if there will be any money for their project at all, a process which is labour intensive, says McFarlane.

guaranteed, although at the territorial level it appears to be flowing. According to statistics provided by Ross Burnet of the Arts Section of the Cultural Services Branch of the Yukon Government, of the 11 theatre groups that applied for territorial funding in 2014, nine of them were awarded it. cont’d on page 18...

Waiting for this money is often taxing on resources and creatively difficult, says Genevieve Doyon, the co-artistic director How’sBUSINESS of Open Pit Theatre. Like WIT, Open Pit receives no core funding - funding that would provide for day to day operating expenses How’issBUSINESS but funded on a project-to-project basis, along with whatever money they generate with fundraising and giving workshops.

“It often takes three years to create a play. It’s a challenge to be productive as an artist, but still be there and give back to the community (between projects)... to stay active as a company and still create quality work. It’s a lot of balls to juggle,” says Doyon.

Doyon notes that it would be impossible to run Open Pit, “like a real business.”

“Tickets would have to be, like, $200 to pay our people if we tried to run it as a business and not as a non-profit,” she says.

Nonetheless, there are a few performance companies who do go the for-profit route, such as the recent start-up created

by Kate Fitzgerald and Rebecca Reynolds, called Velvet Antler Productions. Velvet Antler is for-hire and focuses on Vaudeville and burlesque-style performances.

“It’s about being creative and versatile,” Reynolds says.

“We were answering to a hole in the market,” says Fitzgerald. “And it gives professional dancers a place to find paying work… there are a lot of high caliber dancers in Whitehorse and now people can hire them locally instead of bringing them up from down south.”

Both Reynolds and Fitzgerald have day jobs to make ends meet, showing that it’s hard for artists whether they are for-profit or not-for-profit. Velvet Antler also pays their performers.

“Unless we do a charity event,” Fitzgerald adds. “When we don’t get paid, we can’t pay our dancers.”

This sentiment - when you aren’t paid, you can’t pay others - is true of both nonprofit and for-profit companies, and many not-for-profits rely heavily on volunteers.

In fact, in order to be a non-profit company says McFarlane, you must have an unpaid board of directors, who are fiscally responsible for it, so companies like WIT and Open Pit Theatre are literally run by volunteers.

Volunteers are an essential part of running a non-profit theatre group, says Doyon, although she adds that Open Pit Theatre does pay what it can and offered the musicians at their most recent fundraising event a “humble honorarium.”

“I can’t even count the number of hours I work for free for Open Pit,” Doyon says.

“Because we work for free so often, we really make a point to pay our artists, and as well as we can.

McFarlane notes that theatre companies like hers are, “the work of individuals who care,” and that, in the end, as an artist, she pays herself, “last, to ensure (she) has a balanced budget.”

With all these things to worry about, it’s easy for both non-profit and for-profit theatre companies to get discouraged, says Doyon, but it, “can’t always be about the money.”

“You have to remember it’s for your art,” she says. “And remember to make that rise above everything else.”

I

’m not sure where the second week of freeze up has gone.

After the protracted nature of my preparations, the flurry of activity upon arrival, and the pleasantly systematic organization of the cabin once here, time itself has taken on a different feel.

Maybe it was the sudden transition from fall to winter that came with driving 500 km north; maybe it was the clocks going back; or maybe it’s the lack of electricity, schedule and daily commute to the office.

Or it could just be the West Dawson pace of life.

I’ve heard that running on Yukon time means being 15 minutes late and Dawson time is an extra five minutes behind that.

But perhaps there’s an additional little bend in the space-time continuum on this side of the river.

Regardless, the days have settled into a rhythm. We wake when it gets light. I work in the mornings while The Frenchman reads or tackles small projects. In the afternoons we walk, run or bikejor with the dogs. We bump into neighbours here and there and we amble down to the river most days to check on the serious business of freezing.

At first a tiny, fragile layer of ice clung to shore. It’s hard to imagine this substance, resembling cling-wrap, will ultimately become strong enough to drive over. Thin sheets of ice also floated past, tinkling as they turned, bumping into one another. Sometimes flat, sometimes protruding from the surface like glassy shark fins, their random motion through the eddy line was mesmerizing.

Then slush pancakes arrived, flowing down the east side of the Yukon River. Slopping past, they bump into each other and the shore, sticking together a little at a time. One afternoon our observations of ice were interrupted by a boat crossing – first we heard it colliding with patches of slush, then the driver found an open channel and made a good run across. He skilfully slid into shore, whereupon a dog and a girl jumped out, laden with supplies for their freeze up.

A couple of days later, when more slush made boating impossible, we met the helicopter dropping off another freeze up latecomer.

In general, the warmer temperatures have made the river’s progress somewhat slow. And just

as I’m unable to envisage the ice bridge that will eventually come to be, I’m equally incapable of comprehending two weeks have slid past. I suppose the days add up to weeks, analogous to the slush clumps that, fused together, span the water and bring the river’s run to an end for another year.

Still, I remain convinced time in West Dawson is different than elsewhere.

It seems fitting to discover this in 2015, the year marking the 100th anniversary of Einstein’s presentation of the complete Theory of General Relativity. To misquote Einstein, “Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. Sit in West Dawson for an hour and it seems like a minute. That’s relativity.”

Or freeze up.

ough or gamey meat is a real challenge for you and your family. If the first meal doesn’t come off well, you’ll have a hard sell to get them interested in the remaining 150 to 200 kilograms that remain in the freezer.

What can we do to make that situation better? First of all check to see if you can improve your meat care skills at the kill-site.

That won’t take care of the current problem, but may prevent it from happening in the future.

Tough and or gamey (strong flavoured) meat can often be the result of poor handling in the field.

Strong tasting meat can almost always be made more tasty through the use of sauces or marinades and marinades can include tenderizing ingredients. Cooking methods such as stewing or braising (Dutch Oven or Slow-Cooker) also greatly reduce the strong flavour through the moist cooking method and the inclusion of various vegetables especially onion, turnip and celery. A little more spice than usual also mellows the strong flavour.

Tough meat is probably easier to make use of than the gamey type. In a worst case scenario the whole animal can be run through the grinder and used as burger, meat-loaf, meat-pie, sausages, chili, spaghetti sauce, soup or hamburger stew (mince.) These can be spiced/flavoured differently so as not to become monotonous.

As with gamey meat, tough meat can be stewed or braised to the point where it becomes so tender it falls apart on your fork.

Steaks and roasts can be kept in a container (Ziploc bag to make cleanup easy) containing any of hundreds of marinades available from old-style cook-books or on the internet. The meat in marinade containers can be kept in the fridge for a week and can be turned over each time you open the fridge door. You also use a lot

less marinade using this method.

A basic marinade for short term soaking (two to four hours) uses an acidic liquid such as wine, vinegar or lemon juice which breaks down the muscle fibres. Oil, spices and other herbs and sweeteners are also included.

My go-to marinade is olive oil with a tablespoon of crushed garlic in a Ziploc for up to a week in the fridge. Zesty Italian or any other favoured commercial salad dressing can be used the same way. This is for any meat, including waterfowl and upland game birds. Marinades can also be injected into the meat using a syringe made for that purpose.

Sticking the meat repeatedly with a fork will allow the marinade to penetrate more completely.

Tough meat can be pounded with a meat hammer for minute steaks or Schnitzel and will always be tender. There are electric or hand-crank steak tenderizers which pierce the meat as it is run through a series of short vertical blades.

Chewy cuts will often produce very tender portions if braised (slow-cooked) cooled quickly, sliced and chilled overnight in a tight container to be served the following day by being re-heated in gravy.

Wild-meat is especially vulnerable to becoming tough and chewy if it is overcooked. Don’t

Hint: Stew it cook it like beef or pork as it is very lean. As a result it gets dried out and tough to chew very easily. Wrap or seal in a container any left over meat to prevent it drying out overnight.

Marinate your roast/steaks as above and cook them on the cool (no heat) side of the barbeque with the lid closed as much as possible. On the hot side place a stainless steel bowl containing wine or juice which evaporates, keeps the heated air moist and glazes the meat which is roasting on the unheated side of the rack.

Tenderness and great flavour can be affected by everything you do with the meat right from squeezing the trigger, through the field-care, butchering, wrapping, kitchen prep and serving. Learn to do it better and strive to do it right. It pays off in the long run.

Yukon musher Michelle Phillips enjoys a run on her dog sled

M

arathon runners spend a lot of time and dedication working towards being the best runner they can be. Countless hours are spent in the gym, running on a track, doing specific exercises designed to enhance their performance. With sled dogs who race it’s no different.

The Yukon Quest is a very long race and as a musher, you want your team of dogs to be in the best possible shape. So how does this happen?

Michelle Phillips is a well seasoned musher in the Yukon. After years of working with the dogs, Phillips has developed a training routine which yields results.

She has been racing for 18 years, completed six Yukon Quests(Alaska-Yukon terrain, each race is 1,000 miles) with a best finish fourth place, and participated in six in Iditarod (Alaska terrain, 1,000 miles) races.

Her and her partner Ed Hopkins own Caribou Crossing which enables the couple to give the dogs a workout year round.

Caribou Crossing is located in Carcross, and the dogs are part of the business, too. In the summer visitors can take cart rides pulled by the racing canines.

While the tour business may be fun and games for the dogs, there is a much serious and disciplined side during training.

Typically, the dogs will start training when a pup is around the six to eight month mark. From there the dogs are put in harnesses to get used to them.

All year round the dogs are exercised using specific training techniques. First, Phillips starts the dogs off with chasing ATVs. Then, the next step is to hook up the dogs to the ATV’s and let them run with it, with the dogs in front. This will continue until there is snow. Once winter starts, the dogs are hooked up to the sled and Phillips will take the dogs for camping trips between 100 to 300 km long.

“We put a lot of training miles on our dogs before we go for a first race – 3,000 training miles (4,828 km) to be exact,” Phillips says.

Aside from training, the dogs receive proper nutrition and extra holistic care such as massages, supplements and acupuncture.

Now you may be wondering, why is it that the Alaska husky breed are used as sled dogs. It turns out this breed of dog is extremely athletic.

“The Alaskan husky is an incredible athlete,” Phillips says.

“They will burn 10,000 to 12,000 calories a day in these long races.

They can run six to eight hours, sleep for four hours then get up and go again.”

The peak of any athletic runner can be determined in the form of

V02, which is used to determine the maximum amount of oxygen consumed during running. The average V02 for a healthy middle aged adult is between 50-60. For Philiips’ dogs, their V02 surpasses that.

“Their V02 max measures over 200,” Phillips says. “These guys love to run.”

So what about the mushers?

Now that the dogs are trained, how do they cope with the 10 to 12 day-long sled races like the Yukon Quest? For starters preparation is key. Particular types of food are selected based on weight. Then there is the mental aspect. Being out in the wilderness for so long can present challenges such as bad weather and sleep deprivation. Phillips overcomes these obstacles by keeping a positive attitude, and exercising problem solving skills.

Aside from the rigorous nature of the races, there is also the beauty of the race.

“I see such beautiful country and often see northern lights, along with the moon rising. We feel like a unit and I admire and love my dogs so much it is a very special feeling.”

This is Not the Yukon: Life in Southern Ontario with Joslyn Kilborn

T

he first thing Solace does inside my parent’s house is pee on the deep shag rug in the TV room.

We’re all surprised by it. She does it again a few days later, looking me right in the eye as she squats on another corner of the same carpet.

The next week at dinner my mother has to put Solace in a down-stay 12 times before the dog actually stays. A test to see who’s really in charge, and mom wins.

But when she heads to bed that night she finds a puddle on her yoga mat.

By Thanksgiving no one is surprised when the dog squats the moment we enter the carpeted rec room at my grandmother’s apartment building. We stop her mid pee in a way that we hope will help her remember not to do so in the future. But that remains to be seen.

I’ve had her inside a handful of friends’ and strangers’ homes, but she didn’t pee in any of them before coming to Ontario.

At least, as far as I know. I adopted Solace from the White-

A nice day for a walk horse Humane Society five months ago. She was brought in by bylaw, and her history before then is unknown. It was love at first sight for me: I walked into the dog runs

behind the shelter last April to see her standing calm, black, and silent in the midst of a barking grey blur of hyper husky activity.

Since then we’ve spent our

time living deep in the woods of a year old burn, under the trees of an Okanagan cherry orchard, on the road in a friend’s car, hopping in and out of my camper around the Yukon, and for the most part, at a cabin 40 minutes south of Whitehorse.

Through this Solace and I have bonded, deeply, irrevocably, her loyalty is unlike anything I have ever experienced, we are extensions of each other’s bodies – and we dress the same.

But in the circles of extremely well trained dogs we travelled in the Yukon, Solace was known for her bad habits. She hasn’t been the most popular dog in social situations because she would bark

at people, steal their food, and rip apart their garbage and scatter it across their homes/lawns.

Training her has been an allconsuming passion for me, and her growth in confidence, behaviour, and affection are obvious. But every time our life changes she finds a new way to challenge me.

Aside from peeing on carpets, Solace has also left all her leash training in the Yukon. Our walks in Ontario leave me with a sore shoulder and an old frustrationwrought impatience: when will my dog be as good as everyone else’s?

One morning I take her to a busy dog park. I watch the other dogs jump up on people, jump onto the picnic table, refuse to do anything their owners ask, run away when their owners try to leash them, make their owners chase them around the park, ducking out of their grasp. Solace plays happily with the other dogs, returns to check on me regularly, and when I say it’s time to go, simply trots after me towards the gate.

Afterwards we go to a pet store, and while dogs around me are getting into fights in the aisles and pulling their owners off their feet, I tell mine to lie down and stay while I look at training collars, and she does, smiling and watching the scene around her.

I might have a dog with trust issues that pees on carpets and eats garbage, but I’m so glad she’s from the Yukon.
