hose with long memories might recall that I recounted my first trip to New York in the Jickling’s Jabberings column of February 21, 2013. I reminisced about being stuck in my own humidity hell as I travelled from LaGuardia Airport to Grand Central Terminal en route to a cousin’s wedding in Connecticut. The temperature rose to well over 30°C. “By the time my cheerful Aunt Janice picked me up an hour later (at my destination) I was less a man than a bog,” I reported. Though it was an unsatisfying experience, I was not immune to the energy of the place and I vowed I would make my way back to New York City, conceding that summer was not the best season. Now it’s official; the tickets are booked and I will be heading to New York City for three weeks over Christmas. Thanks to the wheeling and dealing of my friend, Jenny Duncombe, and her colleague, Marguerite Kuiack, I’ve secured reasonably priced lodging in Harlem and have recruited half-a-dozen wayward souls to visit me during
my stay. I intend to visit the Statue of Liberty, the Apollo Theatre, and the Guggenheim Museum. But most importantly, I intend to write a play, or at least get a damned good start. My reasons for wanting to write a play in New York City are somewhat superstitious. My theory goes as such: hunkering down to write in the city that spawned such playwrights as Eugene O’Neill, Arthur Miller, and Neil Simon (not to mention all the other cultural luminaries that have passed through town) will provide me with inspiration through artistic osmosis. Admittedly it’s a half-baked notion, but I’m a sucker for such romance. So you can imagine how my heart was set aflutter when Gavin Gardiner (one of the aforementioned wayward souls) sent me a link to an article about the White Horse Tavern in Manhattan and asked if we could go there. According to the article, the White Horse Tavern opened in 1880 and was primarily a longshoreman’s pub until Welsh poet Dylan
Thomas began drinking there prior to his death in the early 1950s. After that, it became a haunt for such greats as Jack Kerouac, Bob Dylan, Norman Mailer, Jim Morrison, and Hunter S. Thompson. These names alone are enough to send me into a tizzy, but beyond the names of the people, let’s consider the name of the place: The White Horse Tavern. I’m from Whitehorse. Auspicious, right? Surely this is some sort of sign —the summoning of destiny — right? My silly, whimsical self enjoys indulging such fantasies, but my practical, disciplined self knows that writing is hard work and such poppycock does not propel the process forward. Worse still, my party-pooping self will rightly point out that attempting to channel exceptional writers through mere imitation will do little else except make me unoriginal. That being said, guess who’s going to be sidling up to the bar at happy hour.

Tea Time with Nicky
by Laurence Lambin
I
arrived in Whiterhorse in the middle of the night after riding Greyhound buses across the country for five days. The last thing I wanted was to sit again, but at 4:30 a.m., feeling cold just because I was tired, Tim Hortons seemed like the only place I could go. I sheepishly dragged myself accross the street and through the doors without looking around me, then sat down with a tea. Eyes half-closed, I burned through the hours, darkening a few pages of my notebook and fighting fatigue with the hot liquid in my cup. It took me everything just to lay down some blurred lines that failed to make sense. Exhausted, I took off to watch the sunrise. I walked east, toward the dim green light profiling over the horizon, until I hit the river. I crossed the bridge to Riverdale, trying to reach a better point of view. My footsteps echoed through the silence of the F.H. Collins parking lot. I walked up the road leading to the hospital then cut somewhere uphill. The sky was slowly waking up in its teal and indigo sweaters. The sun was there, but it was hidden behind a cloudy wall. Although I already felt its heat, I knew it wouldn’t show up for least an hour. I turned around to set my sights on the mountains and the city comfortably nested within its flanks. It was wonderful; a slow slumber reaching for light in this late fall morning. Under my feet, the cozy neighborhood of Riverdale. Down there, a little bit north across the river, downtown and its

Nicky is a nice man with what I’m guessing are remnants of a Hebrew accent, and a bit of a crooked smile, who rushed at the door as soon as he saw me through his window. On his street, houses have verandas with french-like columns, ten-foot bay windows, and double garage doors with pricey SUVs parked in front. He lives in a semi-basement with a table, a bed, a couch and a TV. It looks like he’s about to move. But he’s not. Nicky’s happy in Whitehorse. A second room featuring two single mattresses is used to host travellers. His daughter recently left to live on her own. This was her bedroom. Showing me around the place, Nicky pointed to the shower and the laundry room. “You must want to wash now, after riding the bus for so long.” Of course, he was right. Nicky was always right. “Take care of yourself and do your laundry if you wish first, then

we’ll talk.” I dropped my bag on one of the beds and headed straight for the shower. I was in such a hurry that I forgot to take my soap. Feeling guilty, I used Nicky’s and never told him. While I was washing, Nicky set up sheets and blankets on the bed. I do carry around my sleeping bag, but a comfortable night between two sheets is a luxury I dared not refuse. After settling down, I filled up the kettle resting on the counter, took out my Feng Qing cake and my little teapot and started brewing. I’d been waiting for this moment since I left Montreal five days ago. I delicately broke out some of the stone pressed leaves and palced them in the bottom of the teapot. I poured in hot water, steeped them for a few seconds (15, tops) and finally served the tea in the mugs Nicky had brought from the kitchen. The First gulp was pure pleasure. Feng Qing tea is a real treat, delicate and light, much more sweet than bitter. I drank it with ease. Nicky sipped his cup and, after a brief moment of hesitation, smiled with satisfaction. “You don’t mind if I add a little sweet to it?” Of course not. Nicky grabbed the agave syrup on the table and dripped some in his mug. He tasted it again and let go of a soft, “aah, perfect”. He was the first person I ever saw sweetening such tea. And for some reason, I found it touching. While drinking, we spoke freely about ourselves. Nicky told me

about his youth in Israel and about Haifa, the city where he lived most of his life. He also told me about his travels, his encounters with spirituality, his coming to the Yukon, and his life as a Northerner. Nicky loves to speak and teach about things that have touched him. And he also listens. He asked me about my trips, my writing, my projects, and soon the mugs were empty. I poured some more water in the teapot. The second steeping was even better than the first one. It always is. Feng Qing tea gets smoother with more aroma. Its brew is lighter than water. “I like this tea. I wonder if they sell some at the Chinese store downtown?” I decided to check before I left. Two days later, I was back on the Trans-Canadian trail, walking my way from Porter Creek to Downtown at dawn. The sky was clear and colours were bursting from the summits beyond Riverdale. I did not find pu’er tea at the Chinese store Nicky told me about (neither did I find any Chinese tea). But who cares? There’s that new place in town that just opened, Amy’s Tea House. Maybe that’ll be somewhere to meet other Yukoners over a steaming teapot. We’ll see. Laurence Lambin is travelling in the North. He’s from Quebec. Contact him via editor@whatsupyukon.com.

Listening to the Music I ’ve been listening to a lot of cassette tapes lately. You remember those things; they appeared between vinyl records (making a comeback) and CDs (fading away as the world goes digital). Our collection of taped music isn’t as obvious as our shelves of vinyl, which got admiring glances from adults accompanying their kids trick-or-treating. “That’s quite a collection you have there,” said one dad, prompting me to pop open the four drawers in the bureau (this week’s accompanying photo) and say, “The vinyl isn’t even the half of it.” Outside of the photo there are another eight of those small drawers at the right, and several three-shelf storage units on a bookcase in the hall. My cassettes haven’t been much listened to lately because it’s hard to find a good tape player. We have a couple of those multi-playback units in the house — the combination radio, turntable, dual cassette, and CD player machines. There’s one in the living room and one in my study. The turntables work fairly well and the CD units are fine, but the tape decks are fair-to-bad — apparently driven by elastic bands: half of the living room set stopped working at the same time I found a broken elastic band on the floor underneath it. The other half is unreliable; it speeds up, slows down, and gains and loses volume. The unit in my study is pretty good, though it works better with factory-recorded tapes than my own creations. They’re shorter and there’s less weight of tape to pull back and forth. They just don’t make tape decks like they used to. Recently though, I realized that we actually had a really good 15 year-old CD/two-deck combo player sitting down in our music room — a holdover from my wife’s

It’s sat idle since she ceased involement in the choir two years after retirement. The tape decks on that machine are actually better than the CD player. Both sides have autoreverse, so you can play the entire tape without flipping it. It recognizes the blank spaces between tunes and will actually allow you to cue-up a particular track, which was always one of the advantages that records had over cassettes. I set it up in the living room a couple of weeks ago, detaching the speakers to spread the sound around, and have been taking
quite a few trips down a variety of memory lanes: rock, jazz, folk, and classical. Jack Bruce died recently and I spent part of an afternoon running through my taped collection of Cream. Oh, I have the CD boxed set, but it was nice to hear the songs again in the order I first remember hearing them. After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City. One Million Footsteps
Tracks goes into the Outback
T
racks, playing November 23 at the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC), is based on the true story of Robyn Davidson, a young woman who resolved to take a two thousand mile walk across the Australian desert to the Indian Ocean, accompanied only by a Labrador retriever and four feral camels. Robyn suffered from societal claustrophobia and sought the freedom and clarity offered by the expansive ambience of a desert. The first recounting of this incredible expedition was published by National Geographic magazine in May of 1978; photographer Rick Smolan captured a series of stunning images documenting Davidson’s adventure. In Tracks, this incredible series of portraits are weaved together and made fluid through the medium of film. Davidson is a strikingly beautiful woman with an exceedingly complicated soul, and it comes through in the photos. She was reluctant to have her picture taken, adding an interesting element to the images. Her motivations for taking the trip aren’t entirely clear (perhaps not even to her) but it is clear that she didn’t plan on attracting so much attention. Mia Wasikowska charmingly channels these nonchalant mannerisms into her characterization of Robyn. The camels themselves figure importantly in the odyssey: Dookie, Bub, Zeleika, and baby Goliath act as living, breathing luggage and constant companions to
Aboriginal territory, within which it is forbidden to travel without one. Despite their language barrier, the two learn to communicate through gestures and tone. A beautiful scene in the movie shows Davidson laying in her sleeping bag by the campfire whilst Eddie pantomimes her a story. He speaks in his native tongue, but his gesticulations communicate perfectly the emotions and actions of his characters. Davidson’s modest fortitude is a source of inspiration and awe to those who happen upon her story. The grace and confidence with which she faces this seemingly impossible task is remarkable and admirable. Tracks offers catharsis from the stress and repetition of modern life: take a million steps outside society with a lovely and mysterious woman who proves to the world that ordinary human beings can do extraordinary things, despite many assurances they cannot. A BYTE of Business
The founder of Cozy Foods and other young businesspeople will pitch entrepreneurship at the next BYTE ConneX event by Ken Bolton
A
my O’Rourke’s business was financially successful from the outset — so successful, she folded it in less than a year. She will talk about her experience at Baked Café on November 20. As founder of Cozy Foods, O’Rourke prepared and delivered home-style frozen meals to timestrapped customers in Whitehorse. She even supplied such “mom” foods as mac-and-cheese, chicken potpie and bison stew to Dawson City residents with a hankering for comfort and convenience. O’Rourke describes herself as a professional person with an active lifestyle and a “vibrant” social life — the kind of person who could use a service such as Cozy Foods, which didn’t then exist in the Yukon. With the help of a now defunct self-employment program administered by YG and däna Näye Ventures, she developed and began to implement her business plan, operating from a rented commercial kitchen. “It went really, really well,” she says. “I couldn’t have asked for a better pickup from the community. It was very popular. “I didn’t have my own retail space, but I had a freezer set up in a clothing store there. “They said one of their most popular items was my food that they were selling.” Unfortunately, the day-to-day grind of cooking professionally wasn’t to her taste. “I enjoyed the business part of it, the branding, the business development, the marketing. I enjoyed all of that a lot more than I did the cooking itself,” she
explains. “The primary reason I walked away was because of a lifestyle choice. It takes a very specific personality to have a balanced lifestyle and be an entrepreneur, and I think it was throwing me off-balance a bit.” Far from being disillusioned, however, O’Rourke considers her initial outing as an entrepreneur “one of the most positive experiences” she’s ever had. “I have absolutely no regrets about my year running Cozy Foods.” O’Rourke says her day job with the Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon draws on many of the skills she developed as a businessperson. She also runs a catering service on the side, and supplies frozen meals to construction sites. “I can say with great certainty that I’ll start other businesses in my life,” she says. “I don’t know if it will ever be a full-time endeavour for me, but I really see the value of pursuing a new project and learning as you go. I

The idea for the Yukon Upstarts conference originated with YG’s regional economic development branch, according to conference coordinator Adria Collins. “There will be some people who are just simply interested, who want to learn those skills that entrepreneurs need,” Collins says. “And there will be some who are already kind of in the process. They may come with an idea that’s already partly hashed out, and they can learn how to further develop that idea and implement it.” As an inducement, attendees

Phil’s Tire Tips
do you have a tire pressure monitoring system equipped on your vehicle?
If you notice a light on your dash that includes the letters T.P.M.S. or a small tire icon, your vehicle may be equipped with this safety system. As of September 2007 the D.O.T. requires every passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured for sale in the U.S. with a G.V.W.R. of 10,000 lbs or less must include a system to detect any tire with less than 25% of the placard pressure and warn the driver of a low tire pressure on the instrument panel. There are several different meanings to these indicators and deciphering which condition the system is indicating varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you notice any of these warnings on your instrument panel, you should refer to your owner’s manual or stop in and have us identify which conditions the vehicle may be experiencing.

Yukon Artists in the International Songwriting Competition by Joslyn Kilborn
I
f it hasn’t crossed your radar yet, this years’ International Songwriting Competition has some pretty serious judges. Tom Waits. Sarah McLachlan. Bela Fleck. I discovered the competition this year on my Facebook news feed, entirely because Tom Waits is a God in my circles. What’s cool is that anyone with $35 can enter and potentially get Tom Waits listening to her songs; there’s a ton of genre categories and you can enter as many songs in as many categories as you like. The website even claims that things like recording quality and vocal talent won’t be judged — it’s all about the lyrics and melody. “Someone I knew had success,” Kim Beggs says, of why she first decided to enter the competition. “It’s like that in the music industry, we all kind of learn from each other. If someone you know has won, maybe you could too.” Beggs herself has won three times in the competition’s Americana category, two honourable mentions and a 3rd place. With 15,000 entries from all over the world, it’s an achievement worth boasting about. The competition’s top finisher gets a huge cash prize and

Celebrate National Child Day! This November 20th celebrate National Child Day, a day dedicated to promoting and safeguarding the rights of children and youth. Celebrated since 1993, National Child Day commemorates the United Nations’ adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) on November 20, 1989. This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the UNCRC– an important milestone. The Convention on the Rights of the Child ratified by 193 States enshrines the inherent human rights of all children under the age of 18 years, whether they belong to the younger or the older age cohorts of childhood. However, the reports of the State parties submitted to the monitoring committee established by the Convention demonstrate that the rights of the younger children are often overlooked.

and honourable mentions win the glory of success. “I get emails,” says Beggs, of the more tangible prizes she left the competition with. “I won some spam.” But she got her money’s worth. “It’s something that fleshes out your public profile. Another detail.” She also thinks it’s a good idea to keep entering this competition and others like it, even though she’s already won in the past. “If you keep getting acknowledgement from your competition
it keeps adding up.” Though she does think the competition’s encouragement of amateur entries is misguided. “You need to produce finished songs or you’re throwing money into a pit,” Beggs says, suggesting that your song will go through an earlier series of ears before reaching the star artist judges. “If you submit a crappy recording, Tom Waits won’t be listening to it.” She experienced this firsthand, one year submitting a simple computer recording with no results and the next submitting the same song, only professionally recorded, and winning. “Professionally produced songs say more about your seriousness, show you’re devoted to your craft.” Beggs urges musicians thinking of entering to very carefully consider what they submit. “I would hesitate to spend a lot of money,” she says “Enter only your best work.” But you can also think of the cost of submissions as a business write-off. “Just to know your song is actually being listened to — it’s relatively inexpensive promotion.” “You actually have to submit things to win,” says Beggs. “Got to be willing to put yourself out there. “It’s like handing out your resume. It’s like throwing out seeds.” This years semi-finalists will be announced in February-March 2015, with winners announced in April. Joslyn Kilborn is a Whitehorsebased writer. rince Harry turned 30 this year. Besides continuing as Britain’s most eligible bachelor, this milestone entitles him to receive his share of Princess Diana’s estate. But was that what Diana wanted? When Diana passed away in 1997, she left a Last Will and Testament dated June 1, 1993, which she amended by way of a legal document called a codicil in 1996. She left behind £21-million in assets and named her sister and mother executors of her estate. Originally, the will required that Diana’s assets be held in trust for William and Harry until they turned 25, not 30. She also directed her executors “to give effect as soon as possible but not later than two years following my death to any written memorandum or notes of wishes of mine”. In a Letter of Wishes (LW) prepared the next day, Diana directed that all her jewellery and three-fourths of her personal property go to her sons, with the remaining one-quarter divided among her 17 godchildren. Despite these clear directions, on the request of Diana’s mother and sister, the court delaying the gifts to her sons until they turned 30, and by giving each of the 17 godchildren one item from her estate rather than one quarter value of her personal property. As a result, each of the godchildren received what some have called a “tacky memento”, rather than a significant payment from Diana’s estate. The court allowed the variation because the LW was not binding on Diana’s executors. It did not contain specific language required by British law, and instead used words like ‘discretion’ and ‘wishes’. This gave Diana’s sister and mother wiggle-room in honouring the letter. As a result, Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, was able to put her belongings on public dis-

play until Harry turned 30. In the Yukon, there are also formalities for a will or other testamentary document to be considered binding. These are largely contained in the Wills Act. The lesson for us commoners is that you should not rely on a let-
ter, note, or other informal act of communication to pass along assets of significant monetary or sentimental value. While most of us do not have assets as valuable as Diana, many people do try to change their will or set out their final wishes

usually keep a cool head amid chaos. This was not the case one fine Friday when I stopped by the Whitehorse Real Canadian Superstore (Superstore) after work to pick up a few things for dinner. Superstore is a large Loblawsbrand grocery store, and since the closure of Extra Foods (the only other large grocery store in downtown Whitehorse) for renovation, Superstore has become, at times, chaotic. This was one of those times. It seemed like everyone in the Yukon was waiting in line, carts overflowing with cans of Stagg chili and outhouse-sized packages of toilet paper. There were four clerks checking out groceries for hundreds of people. I lost it.
I went into fight, flight, or freeze mode. My over-tired body (faced with a long line-up under fluorescent lights in the din of check-out pandemonium) decided flight was the best option. Head high, I confidently walked through the automatic doors without paying for the contents of my little gray plastic shopping basket. As I popped my (ahem) hot dinner items into the backseat of my vehicle, I heard a voice gently say, “Ma’am, could we see your receipt please?” Emerging from flight mode, I introduced myself, and explained to the two security guards that I walked out without paying, due to the chaotic store atmosphere. We strolled back into the store where I paid for the contents of the little gray basket at the cus-

And I left the store without waiting in line. Aside from nicking the odd gumball as a tot, I’m not typically a thief. My low-key botched robbery of Superstore was symptomatic of my case of acute missing-ExtraFoods syndrome. I avoid shopping at Superstore because I can’t handle the too-obviously corporate vibe. Conversely, I enjoyed shopping at Extra Foods because it felt more gracious: the employees seemed happier to be at work, I knew where to find stuff, and the produce was reliably well-stocked

Perspectives on the Whitehorse Extra Foods (aka Yellow Store) Renovation ... cont’d and miraculously fresh. But now, Extra Foods has closed for renovation and will reopen as Your Independent Grocer. Loblaws Company Limited (LCL) is the corporate operator of both Superstore and Extra Foods, and they keep careful watch on who is writing what about their company. Here’s a statement on the change from their publicity department at the head office: With the transition of the Extra Foods in Whitehorse to a Your Independent Grocer, our goal is to bring a great overall shopping experience to our customers in Whitehorse. We will increase assortment and variety in the store and focus on new fresh programs such as our salad and juice bar, full service bakery and deli departments, fresh instore cut and prepared meat and seafood and easy meal solutions both hot and ready to heat. This statement was too impersonal for me, and food (and shopping for food) is personal. Over the course of about three weeks, I negotiated with LCL for permission to interview Extra Foods manager Mark Wykes. It might be easier to score a personal interview with the Prime Minister. After the LCL public relations representative decided I was (relatively) nonthreatening, I was able to ask a few more personal questions about Extra Foods and the man who has run the store since the early 1990s. With 25 years of grocery experience, Store franchisee Mark Wykes looks forward to continuing to service the Whitehorse community as his store transitions from an Extra Foods to a Your Independent Grocer. Wykes also looks forward to adding approximately 30 full or part-time positions, bringing his colleague-count to around 120. Wykes moved to the Yukon from Nova Scotia in 1973 at age three when his father, an Environment Canada employee, was transferred to Whitehorse. After living and studying in Vancouver as a teen, Wykes returned to

For those of you who aren’t fluent in corporate lingo, “banner” in this case means “logo” or “brand”. What will the new store be like? Wykes says it will “be even more focused on fresh — offering fresh slices from chubs in the deli, an in-store butcher available for custom cuts, hot soups, in-store pizza, and an out-of-thisworld-bakery.” And while many Yukoners are pining for Extra Foods, Wykes says, “I’m so excited about the new store. Customers often said to me about Extra Foods, “don’t change a thing”, but we were fighting battles with old refrigerators and things that just weren’t working well anymore in the old store.” I think the old store will live on. Whitehorse residents says Wykes, “It’s also harder than tend to call new places by old people think; it’s not just about names. Why They Bike by Meagan Deuling
Winter cyclists wouldn’t have it any other way
W
e hear them before we see them; they squeak up behind us on the snowy trail or sidewalk. A muffled “on your left” as they slowly pedal by. Their LED headlight, taillight, and headlamp briefly illuminate the dusky winter daylight. The headlights of passing cars reflect off the back of their neon safety vest. Ski goggles mask their eyes, a balaclava the rest of their face. They look like snowmen that put on a snowsuit, riding a bike with stupidly fat tires. Winter cyclists; they’re back. With the cost of fuel, the obesity crisis, and the traffic jam out of Riverdale in the morning, cycling is logical. It seems obvious that a few die-hards won’t let snow, negative temperatures, and biting wind deter them from getting to and fro via bicycle. But it’s not just a few die-hards. And people bikecommute in the winter for reasons beyond the practical, economical, it-clears-your-mind explanations. “I bike cause it’s fun,” says Kristina Mercs. She’s one of 20 or so people at Baked Café, during an after-hours winter cycling social. Cyclists who arrive on their bike get free pizza, there’s beer and wine and a movie to come, and fat tired bikes on display, as well as many red-cheeked faces. Heather LeDuc commutes from Takhini East to downtown during the week, and she takes her bike on the Grey Mountain Trails (yes, during the winter) on the weekend. She tries to explain the appeal of year round cycling. “It slows things down, you see people you know, yesterday I saw a fox. To be in the air.” She doesn’t form full sentences. It’s not something she has to justify to herself — she loves it. LeDuc says she started biking when she lived in Vancouver, and she didn’t think she’d be able to continue when she moved to Whitehorse. But she could. She has one of those fat-tired bikes, but she says it’s not necessary for winter cycling. She used to have an old mountain bike, you just take a bit of air out of the tires, and if the trail is packed enough, it’s fine for snow riding. LeDuc avoids the roads, especially in the winter when the ploughed-up snow piles shrink the shoulders. She says she has routes where she’s hardly ever in traffic. On the other hand, David Pharand says, “my biggest rush is passing a car on my bike.” Pharand “really enjoys biking, so that’s handy”, but he is also pragmatic about his every-day-of-the-year habit: “If people really sat down and thought about how much time they spend idling, and how much they actually drive? So, my commute, in comparison? It doesn’t take that long.” He’s also sure to note that cycling is healthy. The cold doesn’t deter Pharand. He says the difference between -30°C and -40°C is like the difference between falling out of a 15 or 16 story building — it doesn’t matter, at that point. And, “it doesn’t matter what the temperature is, pedaling up Two Mile Hill is gonna keep ya warm.” Pharand’s nine to five commute sees him pedal from his downtown home to the college, where he works. Pharand claims the fat-tired bikes are accessible, price-wise, for those who want to get into the lifestyle. And LeDuc says people are doing just that: “Every year there’s more and more people.”
Philippe Morin proves that one doesn’t need a fat-tired bike to cycle year round

Dining on Ramen and Talking to the Dead Japanese films come to town
O
n November 23,The Old Fire Hall will once again host a free mini-festival of Japanese films, hosted by the Japanese Canadian Association of Yukon (JCAY). This time it’s a double bill, with one film extolling the virtues of a noted Japanese food staple and its creator, and the other exploring communication with the dead. God Of Ramen is a delightful documentary about Tokyo chef Kazuo Yamagishi. For more than 40 years his tiny Taishoken restaurant in Tokyo’s East Ikebukuro district has served up its specialty, ramen. It’s a mouthwatering noodle dish that crowds of avid fans, who often wait in line for two hours, have been constantly coming back to savour over the years. The film describes Taishoken’s humble origins, opening in a Tokyo back alley in 1961, and its rise to international stature. The fame of its purveyor has also spread far and wide. Yamagishi is a charismatic man, whose devotion to his trade, and his kindness, have warmed him to his clienteles’ hearts, just as his ramen has warmed their stomachs. Now in his 70s, Yamagishi has retired, due to ongoing health problems ranging from varicose veins to osteoporosis. Japanese filmmaker Takashi Innami painstakingly chronicled his career, filming over the course of ten years, and coming up with an award-winning chronicle that’s sure to have you yearning for a heaping bowl of ramen. The second film, Until The Break Of Dawn, is a story about people who have lost someone
through death. It’s also the story of Ayumi, a young high school student who is a “connector”. He functions as an intermediary between the living and the dead.

Tokyo chef Kazuo Yamagishi, the subject of God Of Ramen
Yamagishi is a charismatic man , whose devotion to his trade , and his kindness, have warmed him to his clienteles’ hearts, just as his ramen has warmed their stomachs.
There are a number of rules that a connector and his petitioners must respect. One is that the living person can only connect with the deceased once in a lifetime. Another is that the request for a meeting cannot be made by the dead person. Yet another is that the meeting between the two can only be held during the night of a full moon, and can only last until the break of dawn. Ayumi faces three requests for connection during the course of the film. One is from a scornful middleaged man, who wishes to see his mother, who died of cancer. Another is from a schoolgirl, who had a falling-out with her best friend. Before they had a chance to make up, her friend died in a bicycle accident, leaving many unanswered questions. The third is from a businessman, whose fiancé disappeared suddenly, just after he proposed marriage. He believes against all hope that she is still alive, and seeks Ayumi’s help in solving the mystery. Both films are heart-warming stories of the beauty and enduring qualities of human bonding and friendship. They play on Sunday, November 23 at the Old Fire Hall, with God of Ramen showing at 3:15 pm, and Until The Break Of Dawn at 6:00 pm. Sponsorship of their free showings is courtesy of the Japan Foundation and Vancouver’s Consulate General of Japan. Brian Eaton is a cinema buff. Contact him via editor@whatsupyukon.com.

To Loesje
My Savvy Loveable Wilderness Cat A Goodbye B
y no means a feral cat, Loesje knew the rules of the wild. Savvy outside, loveable inside, she was the Queen. She died this fall at the ripe old cat age of 18-and-a-half. Let me tell you her life story: On a fair morning in May 1996, my husband Don, our 4-year-old son, Alexander, and I — living tem-
porarily in a holiday trailer on the Takhini River Road — knew it was not the time to take on a pet. An old beater drove up to our trailer. In the back window were three kittens. Yes, you guessed it, a man got out of the car and asked if we wanted one. They had been born close to his cabin, further down the road. We had never discussed
having one, but I loved cats. As the two men talked men’s talk, Alexander and I checked out the kittens, all very friendly and gorgeous. “It is not going to be the pure white one. It is to be the black calico with the orange nose stripe,” I said. I knew Don, being practical would not want a cat. But I do
know the ways of men talking and striking a deal. I instructed Alexander to be quiet till the right moment. After letting the men talk and bond Alexander and I popped the question and it was uniformly decided we are adopting one cat. We name her Loesje (pronunciation Lousia). We do not want to leave her home alone, so she just goes with
us everywhere we go. Ours is an outdoor life, especially in summer. At night she comes into the trailer with us and sleeps on my head. I teach her not to, but Alexander does not stop her, and often let her sleep in his bed all through her life. In those early years she came on many camping trips with us. cont’d on page 23...

To Loesje, My Savvy Loveable Wilderness Cat ... cont’d She is a cat, not a dog. Cats are more private animals, although they do not venture too far. Usually they do not come when you call them. Somehow, before moving on we would always find her again, or she would come back to us.
several occasions. I am sure this was the same canny way she stayed out of trouble when coming across carnivorous wildlife. Inside, she would be our alarm-bell for even a moose. Excited, she would stand at the window, tail fluffed-up.
and playful, was very respectful to Loesje. Very well-behaved the whole week, Bubbles is now back to normal. Loesje only grew old two years ago, and recently died a peaceful death, choosing to be very close to us her last five days. We cared
for her the best we could, and one night she died in her sleep in her favorite basket by the wood stove. She never had kittens herself, which I feel bad about because I wonder if there are still cats such as Loesje and Bubbles: very savvy
outside and lovable indoors? Jozien Keijzer is a visual artist, writer and avid hiker who lives in the Mendenhall Subdivision. Contact her via editor@whatsupyukon.com.

Loesje
~ 1996-2014 ~ people we met on the way took delight in her, commenting on her beauty. On hikes, she came too. Early on we would carry her; later she bounced ahead or would follow us. On one hike, when she was half-a-year-old, I noticed she had not returned in the evening. In the dark evening of fall I called and called, but no Loesje. I figured she would be home later. In the morning, still no Loesje. I retraced my steps from the previous day and found her in a thick spruce forest half a kilometre from the house, sitting up straight, waiting patiently, exactly in the spot that I last saw her. We live in the bush and we know there are wild cat-eaters out there. When a dog came in the yard she would climb up the tallest, most spindly poplar tree to the farthest point. We had to call in the fire brigade, for which we served as firemen ourselves on
Her first winter my worry was -30°C weather. I was sure she had frozen the tips of her ears. Her ears were always greyish-white as far as I can remember. Many evenings I called for her to come in early but she always came on her own time. Even at 18, she enjoyed a particularly wild night-life, yet always came home safe and sound. She was an extremely good purrer, but she was not a particularly good birder, though she would watch big robins feeding in the grass for hours. She never brought me a mouse, but I know she did catch them. She remained slender, small, and looked and behaved like a young cat for most of her life. We do have another cat still alive; her name is Bubbles. Bubbles and Loesje never really liked each other, but in Loesje’s last week, Bubbles, who is also 18 and still very healthy, shiny, slender,

3pm A Christmas Story
Dir. Bob Clark, USA, 1983, 93 min
In the 1940s, in the town of Hammond, 9-year-old Ralphie wants one thing for Christmas—an official Red Ryder BB rifle. Ralphie’s desire is refuted with his mother, his teacher Miss Shields, and even a department store Santa Claus, all giving him the same warning: “you’ll shoot your eye out”. Come and enjoy this humourous holiday classic in big screen surround-sound cinema.
6pm Jodorowsky’s Dune
Dir. Frank Pavich, 2013, USA/France, 90 min
This fascinating documentary, a testament to ambition and fantastical vision, unpacks the pre-production of a lost sci-fi legend: a messianic adventure that had the money come through in 1974, would have undoubtedly steered Hollywood in a wilder direction than Star Wars. “Pure, unfiltered creativity.” ~Ain’t It Cool News
8pm Tracks
Dir. John Curran, Australia, 2013, 112 min
This stunning adventure film tells the remarkable true story of Robyn Davidson (played with haunting sincerity by Mia Wasikowska), a young woman who leaves her life in the city to make a solo trek through almost 2,000 miles of sprawling Australian desert. Accompanied by only her dog and four unpredictable camels, she sets off on a life-changing journey of self-discovery.

Playwrought
24-Hours of Purgatory by Joslyn Kilborn
A
fter hearing artistic director David Skelton talk about Nakai Theatre’s 24Hour Playwriting Competition on the radio, I decide to sign up. I’m not a playwright, but, then again — maybe I am. Maybe my passion for writing has been waiting for me to direct it at theatre, at which point my true capacities will be revealed, and I’ll never have writer’s block again. When I walk into the Nakai office to register, my reception seems to echo this sentiment. “Who are you?” Skelton asks.
“I’m Joslyn.” He asks if I write plays. “Not yet,” I say. I have written one play. In a writing class in university. It was ten minutes long. It went over pretty well—I got great marks on it. I begin telling friends back home that I’m entering the competition. “You’re going to win,” is a common response. These friends know me; I trust their grasp of my strengths. Success begins to seem inevitable. I
Photo: Joslyn Kilborn am a playwright, my brain starts telling me. I have come to Whitehorse to discover myself as such. I’m about to write the play that will launch my new creative path. I don’t worry too much about planning, about coming up with a story, about exploring any characters, or doing any research on writing for the theatre. It isn’t until the day before the competition that it hits me: at the end of a 24-hour period I am expected to submit a somewhatcomplete play to be read by a panel of judges. A month later, I am to perform a five-minute segment from this play at the 24-Hour Cabaret. I end up arriving at the Gold Rush Inn on the day of the competition with very little idea what I am going to write about. Still I am not too nervous. Pressure has always been my creative ally; pressure produces diamonds. I enter my hotel room excited to begin. I set up my writing station at the desk. I make a few notes, drink a little coffee. My phone rings. It’s a friend from home. “What are you going to write about?” he asks. “Perfect timing,” I say. “I have no clue.” He helps me brainstorm a few ideas I feel really good about, and we hang up. I sit back down to start writing. I decide to take a shower. I live in cabin, I should take advantage now while there’s still time for my hair to dry before the evening dinner break. Good idea.
Kilborn! Stop fiddling with your self-timer and face your computer! I leave my room for dinner break in low spirits. I’m five hours in and I’ve only really just started writing. Everyone else is pages ahead of me. But I’m offered advice and encouragement and I head back to my room a little redeemed. An hour later I’m lying on my bed feeling terrible. I hate my play. Should I start a new one? I should quit. What’s the point of anything? I should take a nap. I do. At midnight I join the others for a nightcap, no further than I was before, but at least beyond my existential crisis. I joke about it. “There’s still time,” I say. At 6 a.m., after three hours of sleep, I begin writing a new play. At breakfast I joke about this. “It’s going to be very short.” By 11 a.m. I once again hate my play. At 1 p.m., when the competition closes, I submit what I have. It isn’t much more than an apology for having nothing to submit. Still, I think I’ll be performing at the Cabaret. I’m just not sure what. To see my work, and the work of other playwrights, come to the 24 Hour Cabaret on December 4, at the High Country Inn. For more information, contact Nakai Theatre at 667-2646. Joslyn Kilborn is a Whitehorsebased writer. Watch for her plays on Broadway.

Behind the Curtain with Ken Bolton
Michele L ves Art Michele Emslie has spent more than 25 years helping support arts and artists in the Yukon
M
ichele Emslie doesn’t even try to disguise her enthusiasm for her job as an arts administrator. “I love art. I love artists. I love what they give to the world,” she declares. The Yukon Arts Centre’s community programming director is proud to live in a “fairly isolated and remote” place that “can boast a classical concert series, and a jazz series, and an arts centre, and, and, and, and...” she says. “The fact that we have all this art happening, created within our community and coming in from outside, is essential to our health and well-being.” Emslie was entering Grade 2 when her family moved north from Fort Macleod, Alberta. “I remember that trip, and thinking my parents were dragging me literally to the end of the world,” she says. After graduating from F. H. Collins Secondary School, Emslie went to the University of Lethbridge to study history and English. In 1987, she landed a summer job with the Yukon Arts Council that included helping out with the first Yukon International Storytelling Festival. From university, Emslie went to work for the Alberta Foundation for the Performing Arts in

In 1995, just before becoming pregnant with her first son, Emslie began a 14-year stint as organizer of the Whitehorse Concerts classical music series. “I loved that job and the people I worked with. It enabled me to work from home and bring up my children.” Emslie admits her chosen career is not a path to fame and fortune. “If you work in the non-profit world, you’re not going to get rich and famous. It’s not something I really care about, any-
The upcoming summit of Yukon arts presenters fulfills a dream for a veteran local arts administrator way.” Apart from being able to tell “the odd tall tale,” Emslie doesn’t claim much artistic talent of her own. “But I know artists need appreciators as much as they need anything else,” she says. In addition to her paid jobs, Emslie has been an active volunteer with numerous organizations, including the Yukon Arts Centre’s (YAC) board of directors. She resigned as vice chair of that board to take a contract administering the Culture Quest program. For nearly six years, she also worked in the private sector for Magnum Opus Management, learning “the other side of the business, in terms of touring and supporting artists, and booking them.” In 2009, she took on a “signifi-
cant project” for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, working with Andrea Burgoyne from the YAC’s gallery office. “The two of us worked at one desk, and we’re still friends,” she quips. With that behind her, Emslie’s role at YAC began to shift focus, to include administering the territory’s Culture Industries Training Fund. “Al Cushing had come on as CEO, and really wanted to find a way to start reaching out to the community more.” One outgrowth of that new focus is this month’s Yukon Arts Presenters Summit at the High Country Inn, which will bring people together from the whole territory to share ideas and plan new ways to present visual and performing arts in their communities. “The people who are doing that work really, really hard. They’re often underpaid, and often working in isolation,” Emslie says. “It’s going to be remarkable having these incredible brains in one room,” she says. “I think my job is really to listen. What do these people want; what do their communities need in order to go forward?” The three-day conference,

funded by Arctic Winter Games legacy money, will include presentations by several heavy hitters in the Canadian arts and culture sector. The main facilitator will be Jerry Yoshitomi, chief knowledge officer of the California-based MeaningMatters, whose mentorship in arts marketing is in demand worldwide. Earlier this year, he conducted a four-day board and staff retreat for YAC that produced what Emslie calls a “quite visionary” set of new goals. The summit itself represents the culmination of Emslie’s long-standing dream of bringing Yukon’s arts and culture presenters together. “When people come together with a common cause, amazing things happen,” she enthuses. “I think the stars are aligned, and the summit is going to inform the way we move forward.” Additionally, Emslie was recently named to the board of the Canadian Arts Presenting Association, CAPACOA. She hopes to bring an oftenmissing “voice of the North” to the national table. Michele Emslie really does love art. Ken Bolton can’t stop writing. Contact him via editor@whatsupyukon.com.
