n Nov. 19 Yukoners can grab a drink and a snack at the Yukon Transportation Museum and hunker down for a favourite Yukon pastime: telling stories of backwoods adventures.

The event, called Tales of the Trails, will feature Yukon storytellers Sharon Shorty, Ruth Carroll and David Neufeld among others, as well as music by Sally Lutchman. Local comedian George Maratos and Gwaandak Theatre President Melaina Sheldon will be MCing the event. The evening is a fundraiser for Gwaandak Theatre.

“The theme Tales of the Trails makes a lot of sense because it’s a fundraiser for Map of the Land, Map of the Stars which is all about stories from the land,” says Marjolene Gauthier, general manager for Gwaandak Theatre. “It’s really

linked to what we do (at Gwaandak).”

Map of the Land, Map of the Stars is Gwaandak Theatre’s current on-going project, a collaborative, indigenous-centred, interdisciplinary theatre workgroup focused on traversing the rivers and lands of the Yukon. The project, which began in the summer of 2015, will feature a workshop at the upcoming Magnetic North Festival in June as the next part of its development.

This is the third fundraiser Gwaandak has held in as many years. Tales from the Trails is a follow up to last year’s Tall Tales from When They Were Short event, which focused on Yukoners telling stories from their youth, says Gauthier.

“We’re really proud of the

event this year,” Gautheir says.

“It’s part of (Gwaandak Theatre’s) mandate to empower First Nations storytellers and this year most of the tellers are First Nation.”

Aside from the main event, there will be a cash bar, door prizes, appetizers and an open mic session for people who want to share stories of bush adventure.

“People are welcome to come and tell their own stories,” she says. “We hope it will be funny and encourage people to try new things.”

Doors open at 7 p.m., storytelling begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Well Read Books.

I

n his most recent show, Jesse Devost investigates how we gather and hold images in our mind. Optic Nerve, showing at Arts Underground until Nov. 28, explores how the optic nerve continuously captures images and transmits them to the brain, regardless of whether the brain can handle them.

His art employs a variety of mediums, including stencils, spray paint, and masking tape. Devost’s use of different mediums speaks to a larger issue about what the brain is being asked to process today.

As virtual reality ramps up and augmented reality begins to expand, we’re asking our brains to experience things that are unparalleled in history. Three dimensional movies are increasingly common and entire generations are growing up expecting things to be touch screen.

Brains are being asked to process more information at faster rates, and the optic nerve takes all of this in, instantly. Devost’s art speaks to this transformation, blasting with colours and shapes and lines that the viewer is asked to observe and process at the same time.

The show works on two levels: asking the viewer to consider the role of the optic nerve and actually engaging the optic nerve to receive and relay colours and shapes. The brain is thus busy considering the conceptual framework laid forth by Devost while another

playing games for two hours and then quickly switching back to real life, is this a task the brain can fluidly handle?

How will our brains adapt over time as more of these realities are created for us? If, as Devost says, the brain keeps capturing images and storing them, will there come a time when the brain begins to mix up those images revealed from augmented reality and those revealed in real life situations?

How artists further consider these potential changes to the brain, and how the brain continues to adapt to these structural changes, will define more than just art.

T

he ice is coming down in a rush this year. While there was not a sign of the stuff in the river on the day they pulled the George Black Ferry out of the Yukon on October 29, it took just a few nights of minus teens temperatures to bring small pans of the greyish glittering stuff downstream, where it very quickly made the idea of crossing the river by small boat a dicey proposition.

Oh, there were canoes and powerboats on the water for several days after the ferry was berthed for the winter, but the chatter in the grocery stores was that some people were taking chances.

It’s one of nature’s little ironies that the fall freeze-up starts along the banks where the back eddies slow the current down a bit. I say it’s ironic, because the spring thaw will begin along the same banks, which is why it matters just where the ice bridge is able to be formed.

The best route for winter crossings happens to be between the two ferry landings, though we don’t always get it there. If it has to follow the banks for any great distance, it won’t last as long.

In the stream the ice forms little pans. They’re more or less round when they begin; flat interior planes surrounded by tiny ice

walls where the water splashes against them as they drift and spin. Soon they crash into other pans, creating oblong shapes as they join together, welded by the cold and the water.

Four days after the ferry came out, the night temperature dropped 10 degrees, and Sunday afternoon saw hundreds of little floes moving past the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre. Most of them were glittering around their edges while their interiors seemed to be in shadow; an interesting effect.

Some were partly shrouded by the haze that rises off the winter river when the air is colder than the water. At just about minus 10 it was a light haze. At lower temperatures it will darken to grey and even black. There’s often an open lead all winter down the river by Moosehide, and some days the rising haze is so dark it looks like smoke coming off a river that is on fire. (Cue Deep Purple’s anthem.)

Three more days passed and the floes in the middle of the river formed into large pans that were hundreds of metres wide and stretched back up the river as far as the eye could see from Dänojà Zho. Smaller floes had been trapped along the banks by uneven projections, extending the process that had begun at

It’s not easy to project just what will happen. There was ice in the river when the ferry came out last year, and it all went away the next day, taking quite a while to return. My guess is that, by the time this sees print, the ice will have stopped moving and there will be enough of a buildup for people to begin walking the route without putting themselves at risk.

The James Danderfer Trio dip into 1930s-style Chicago and New Orleans jazz

J

ames Danderfer didn’t intend to be a clarinet player.

In Grade 6 he selected the drums as his preferred musical vehicle, but the band director overruled him.

“He looked at my choice, then he asked to look at my hands, and then he asked to look at my teeth,” the Vancouver musician says.

The verdict: young James would be best suited to the clarinet.

“I was disappointed, because I didn’t even know what a clarinet was. I found out years later that that’s a bunch of garbage. It had nothing to do with my ability to play an instrument, he just couldn’t have a band full of drummers.”

After adapting to the strange black instrument, Danderfer also took up the saxophone, so he could play in the jazz band.

“But, through the years of playing both instruments, when I played the clarinet, it felt like me, like my voice. It was happenstance how I got into it, but I kept playing it because it resonated with me.”

Even as a 12-year-old, combination of dance music and creativity drew him to the idiom of jazz.

“There was something romantic about it, and exciting. It was really thrilling to go from playing concert band music to playing essentially dance music in jazz band, and getting to improvise

solos.”

A clarinetist and composer, Danderfer began improvising early, “singing melodies and just coming up with stuff” before learning any instrument.

“When I went to my grandparents’ place in the Okanagan they had an old beat-up piano in the basement, and I just started picking out notes. I was kind of interested in the images that certain keys would draw out,” he says.

“When I started taking piano lessons, I just continued doing that.

I’d come up with stupid little tunes and record them on my tape deck. It was always lots of fun. It felt like a game of some sort.”

Danderfer’s first public outing as a composer came in Grade 12, after he had learned more about harmony.

“I brought in a lead sheet (melody and chord changes), and it was really exciting to hear a group playing my music and bringing it to life. Then I was really hooked, so I just kept writing more and more charts, and learned with each one.”

Years later, he would acquire a Masters degree in jazz composition at McGill University, but not before his musical career had taken a few interesting turns.

“I thought of myself as being on track to take the normal steps of practising for several years, then going to New York and making a name and touring. And then I went to New York, and I felt like my world view was just a little narrow.”

His response was to pack up his clarinet and head to Shanghai.

“Moving to Shanghai was such a left turn that I felt like anything was possible at that point. I could just kind of let go of a concept of what should happen in my career, and start thinking about life a lit-

tle bit more.”

His 2008 CD, called Accelerated Development, chronicled his Shanghai experience. While he loved the music of this “modern” album, Danderfer felt his music was missing some jazz foundation.

“I realized that if you made me do a blindfold test, I don’t know how many of the legendary original jazz clarinetists I could have picked out. And I just thought, that’s pretty weak for someone who claims to be a jazz clarinetist.”

He began to immerse himself in the music that giants such as Jelly Roll Morton and Benny Goodman brought to New Orleans and Chicago in the 1930s. The New Orleans influence in particular will feature prominently in the repertoire the James Danderfer Trio (with Miles Black on piano and Joe Poole on drums) will bring to two concerts in the Yukon this weekend.

On Saturday, November 21, they will be at the St. Elias Convention Centre in Haines Junction. The next night, they will play on the wing at the Yukon Arts Centre. Both performances start at 7:30 p.m.

Danderfer says the cabaretstyle intimacy of both venues suits the “social music” he loves to write and perform.

“You want to know that people are close enough to you to really feel the music, to feel the vibrations of it,” he says. “No matter what the room is, as the artist, you just have to keep thinking about that imagery and the music will take shape. Once it does, it brings people in and they feel connected to it.”

Tips for Setting - and Pursuing Financial Goals You can get lucky by finding a parking meter with time left on it.

You can “luck out” by having nice weather on your vacation. You can even be lucky at love. But when it comes to financial matters, you’re better off not counting on Lady Luck — and focusing instead on setting and pursuing goals.

Here are some suggestions for establishing and pursuing your financial objectives: Be specific. You probably have a lot of ideas about what you want to do, but if you’re going to turn these wishes into reality, you need to get specific. So, for example, instead of telling yourself that you want to retire early, set a goal of retiring at, say, 62. You can then use this target number to help guide your overall investment strategy. To illustrate: You can determine that you need to invest a certain amount of money each year, and earn a certain rate of return, to be able to retire at 62. You can also estimate about how much money you can afford to withdraw from your investment accounts each year to sustain a retirement that begins at 62.

Prioritize your goals. Of course, you want to achieve all your financial goals —and you can have a better chance of doing so if you rank these goals in terms of both importance and timing. For example, you may want to send your kids to college, purchase a vacation home and still be able to retire at age 62. How should you allocate your resources to each of these goals? Should you invest more at any given time for a specific goal? What types of investments are best for each of these goals? Prioritizing your goals can help you answer these and other questions — and help direct your overall investment strategy.

Be prepared to change your goals. Over time, your family and financial circumstances can change considerably — which means you shouldn’t be surprised, or alarmed, if you have to change your goals accordingly. And you’ll find it easier to maintain this flexibility if you’ve worked diligently to create an investment portfolio with sufficient resources to allow you to change direction, as needed.

Review your progress regularly. If you’re going to eventually achieve your goals, you absolutely need to measure your progress along the way. Are your investments performing the way you had anticipated? Are your goals becoming more expensive than you had initially envisioned? To achieve these goals, are you taking on too much — or too little — risk? To answer these types of questions, it’s a good idea to review your overall progress at least once a year and then make whatever adjustments may be necessary.

As you can see, it will take considerable effort to set, review and (hopefully) achieve your goals. And it can be somewhat complex, too, so you may want to work with a financial professional — someone who takes time to talk with you about your goals, understands your risk tolerance and family situation, and has the training and experience necessary to help you work toward your objectives.

Global Response to Climate Change

The 2015 film This Changes Everything is showing on Nov. 21 at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre

T

he systems of the Earth are inextricably interwoven – be they environmental, social, or economic. Naomi Klein, bestselling author of This Changes Everything, The Shock Doctrine, and No Logo, believes that the capitalist model of economics is at odds with the healthy functioning of all other systems on Earth.

Klein says that capitalism is a model based on the unfettered pursuit of “progress” and the mentality that we have the capability to control and subdue the natural world as if it is something separate from us, or inferior to us.

And, she says, the people who maintain the closest relationship with the Earth are first to hear its moans.

These are the ideas at the

heart of the 2015 film of the same name, This Changes Everything, by filmmaker Avi Lewis in collaboration with Klein.

The film amplifies and exalts the little voices of the casualties of capitalism.

Voices from farmers, for example. Montana farmers Alexis and Mike, who when their land was devastated by a broken pipeline, refused to stand by in silence.

The film also features Cheyenne and Cree Indigenous peoples: Alberta’s Crystal Lameman and Vanessa Braided Hair who are fighting legal and social battles for their rightful land as its poisoned and destroyed.

the streets by the thousands to protest chemical plants and coal mines.

It’s real people making tangible change by standing up against government and big oil, and it is happening all over the world.

Environmentalists around the world are laying stones on the path to unity, equality, and a chance to do something radical.

The Earth is screaming at us, through thunder, fire, and earthquakes.

“Change, or be changed,” as Klein says. Because one way or the other, everything is going to change. Klein’s philosophy is, when life gives you climate change, why not curb it “to build a better world?”

Felix er Meria plays Nov. 25th at the Kwalin Dun Cultural Centre et Meria is a simple story with intense emotional angst: a man and a woman are compelled into intimate and tempestuous situa-

tions where their imagination and loyalty is left to wander.

Grioux draws attention to the subtlest of feelings the charac-

ters may hide from others who are unaware of their infidelities.

Less fragmented by long takes and classical editing, spectators become much more vulnerable to the emotions and vulnerabilities of the characters.

Grioux’s camera shows steadfast restraint allowing audiences to linger within moments of yearning and longing.

The score reinforces the Yiddish folk traditions of the Orthodox Community while Leonard Cohen’s Famous Blue Raincoat highlights the sensualities of a young woman kept from her desires.

The music and minimal dialogue contribute to a feeling that Félix and Meria’s dissonance seems more believable than their emotional connection – until he receives some words from his father who is now passed on.

In all, Félix et Meria is a quiet masterpiece, its actions are subtle and emotions are bittersweet.

ontreal filmmaker Maxime Grioux’s 2014 film, called Félix et Meria, is a forbidden love story – and it has been earning wide acclaim. It has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category, and it has already won Best Canadian Feature Film at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.

It is fraught with tradition and cultural with its English, French and Yiddish languages. And set in Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood, the windy streets and snowy sidewalks along with the earth-toned industrial buildings and townhomes give a dour and humble tone to the film.

Félix (Martin Dubreuil) is a middle-aged man whose father does not recognize him as his health is quickly fading. Félix lives alone.

Meria (Hadas Yaron, Fill the Void) is a young Jewish woman who is married to an Orthodox Jew and as such is constrained to a life of tradition and order. Her husband disapproves of her desires, music and playful antics; she is allowed little freedom.

Félix and Meria meet by happenstance and begin to secretly meet for little visits. Although low-key in tempo, Maxime Grioux paints an intense confrontation between cultural tradition and passionate desires.

An Ode to Artemisia and other Arcanities

W

hile staying in the Valle dei Moscheni in the province of Trento, Italy a few years ago my husband and I were served a delicate herbal liqueur called génépi. It was one of those magic occasions when you encounter a flavour you didn’t know existed.

A few days later we attended the Terra Madre Slow Food Convention in Torino, held in conjunction with the Salon del Gusto, where thousands of vendors and producers from Italy and the world gather biennially to showcase their regional delicacies. I roamed the aisles of the Italian section and found two génépi producers, both passionate about their product. I snapped up a bottle from each and brought them home.

The spirit is derived in part from the flowers of Artemisia umbelliformus, a rare species of Artemisia that grows high in the mountains of Europe. The plant suffered from over-harvesting for use in génépi and now the wild harvest is strictly regulated in France and illegal in Italy and Switzerland. Currently most génépi is made with cultivated plants. The liqueur is difficult to find in Canada, though I have seen in it in bars in New York and Seattle.

I have just one inch left in the bottom of my last bottle, so I dream of making my own.

We have several species of Artemisia in the Yukon — the two most familiar are Artemisia frigida or pasture sage, the wooly, matted plant with silvery leaves and tiny pale yellow flowers that grows on dry hillsides or clay banks, and Artemisia tilesii, also known as mugwort or stinkweed, a taller plant whose leaves are vivid green, flat and deeply incised.

Frigida is popular as a seasoning; I’ve never tried making liqueur with it, but two years

ago I infused vodka with a handful of fresh, green, bitter tilesii leaves and now I have a complex, floral, and bitter digestive that is somewhat reminiscent of génépi. Next year I will try again, this time with tilesii flowers.

Another famous Artemisia species, Artemisia absenthium, or wormwood, gives its name to an equally famous liquor, the notorious absinthe, once said to be highly addictive, to drive heavy drinkers mad and ultimately to their death. The blame was placed on wormwood, more specifically, one of its compounds, thujone, said to act upon the brain like THC. That theory has been debunked and absinthe is available again in more than a dozen countries, and has surged in popularity once more, partly because of its whiff of danger and its association with the bohemian life in the boîtes of 19th and early 20th century France.

Wormwood doesn’t grow wild in the north, but The Port Chilkoot Distillery in Haines has recently introduced an absinthe derived from cultivated botanicals grown locally, including wormwood. The distillery has called their absinthe The Green Siren, a reference to its colour, its allure, and possibly to its historic nickname, La Fée Verte, meaning The Green Fairy.

Admittedly, the Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Fonder cocktail that follows is complicated, but it’s delicious. You’ll be so busy measuring, mixing and sipping you won’t be inclined to lament the absence of anything. Certainly not absinthe.

A.k.a. “oily sugar,” oleo-saccharum was once considered an essential bartender’s tool and is now making a comeback. Try it with lemon or orange zest too.

2 large grapefruits berry sugar Peel the zest from the grapefruit with a sharp knife or vegetable peeler, getting as little pitch as possible.

Weigh the peel, transfer to a bowl and add the same weight in sugar. Muddle peel and sugar with a wooden muddler or spoon — this will release oil from the peel and distribute the sugar evenly. Cover and leave for at least one hour and up to 24.

The sugar will draw out the oil and the oil will dissolve the sugar, leaving behind a small pool of highly flavoured, concentrated liquid. Strain into a jar and discard the peel. Use the syrup to add an intense, citrusy zing to boozy punch and non-alcoholic drinks, or as a sauce for crepes at your next brunch. For a basic sour mix, combine the oleo-saccharum with the juice from the grapefruits you’ve just peeled. Use within a week.

f you have a picky eater at home, you are not alone. For many parents, dinner time can be a battle. Between changing tastes and an unwillingness to eat different foods and different textures, getting your kids to eat a healthy, balanced diet can be a challenge. Fortunately, a recent study offers help that could mean an end to the daily food fight.

Dr. Klazine van der Horst and her team of researchers found that when children were in the kitchen taking part in meal creation they cleaned more of their plate. Forty seven parents, accompanied by their child age six to 10 years, were asked to make and eat a meal. Half of the children were involved in making the meal from selecting vegetables for a salad to preparing the entrée. The other half played as their parent selected, sliced, and cooked.

The children that acted like mini sous chefs ate 27 per cent more of the entrée, 24 per cent more calories overall, and 76 per cent more salad. (Dr. Klazine van der Horst’s 2014 research paper is called “Involving children in meal preparation. Effects on food intake.”)

Helping out in the kitchen offers a fun way for kids – who love hands-on activities – to get involved. It also is a great way to instill a sense of ownership, pride, and control for kids in their food and meal times.

Beyond eating more at the dinner table, other research has found that cooking with kids is one of the keys to raising healthy kids. Children that are involved in meal and food preparation tend to be more aware of food values, the origin of foods, and the role of foods in energy balance.

Involve Kids in the Kitchen Including children in food decisions and cooking can take many shapes and forms. While meal preparation and eating becomes somewhat automated and we might not regularly think about all the steps involved, there are actually quite a few.

Whatever your child’s age, there is something that they can do.

Brainstorm with your kids. Whether it’s planning the weekly menu or which vegetables to put in tonight’s meal, coming up with ideas together is a great way to help your kids feel included.

Measure and pour. If a recipe calls for a number of ingredients, put your child in charge of measuring and adding them as needed.

Salad dressings are also a great measure and pour component that kids can make by themselves.

Shake and stir. Depending on the recipe, there might be a role for shaking, whisking, or stirring, which is a perfect hands-on activity for any kid.

Prepping and chopping. For younger kids, tearing lettuce and other greens by hand is a great way for them to contribute to any meal. Older kids, who can safely use scissors or knives, can chop or cut ingredients.

Grow a garden together. While this goes beyond the kitchen, growing a garden together in the summer or an indoor herb garden in the winter is a great way to get kids involved in their food.

W

hen I grow up I want to work in Santa’s workshop, Knitting Department. I will knit something for every child on the planet: cotton beanies for those in hot countries and woolen mittens for colder climes. Just a little gift at a most magical time of the year.

Imagine Santa’s workshop – bustle, busy, bursting with hand crafted items. I recently sat at the kitchen table in Lara Melnik’s cozy cabin. She said this time of the year is just like Santa’s workshop.

Darren Holcombe and Lara Melnik – and a wealth of artists across the territory – are busy creating items for Christmas craft sales scheduled over the next few weeks.

Here is an overview of craft fairs happening in Whitehorse.

n The Spruce Bog Craft & Gift Sale is a popular event. It is sponsored by the Yukon Crafts Society and is in its 40th year. Spruce Bog will be held Nov. 21 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Canada Games Centre. There are 112 vendors this year.

I spoke to Pam Charman. She

has been Spruce Bog’s coordinator for 23 years! She is also a vendor.

Under the name Stocking Stuffers she sells chocolates and pecan bars from her candy kitchen. A few years ago my daughter, Kirsten, purchased one of Pam’s chocolates – it was a cheeseburger in a take home box.

n The Cranberry Fair takes place Nov. 22 and is hosted by the Northern Fibres Guild. This year’s coordinator Elisabeth Weigand is excited to see the fair in its new venue: the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre. The fair runs from 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and it will be a busy place.

The Cranberry Fair has been a popular venue for more than 20 years and it is the only juried craft show in the Yukon. Weigand was responsible for the Call for Submission and recruiting the jury: two arts community people and one Northern Fibres Guild member. Quality, creativity, diversity and originality are the jury criteria when selecting vendors.

in the canteen – so yummy food and beautiful crafts are definitely on the menu.

n Darren Holcombe has organized a new craft fair called re:design.

Mark Saturday, Nov. 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Old Fire Hall on your calendar. This fair offers products made from post-consumer waste. The crafts for sale include bird houses made from salvaged wood and metal that Holcombe has created and Leslie Leong will have jewelry from copper pipe and computer bits.

Jessica Vellenga will offer antique lace pendants and cowls created from old sweaters. A graduate of McMaster University with study abroad experience at University of Leeds, England, Vellenga brings a wonderful fine arts sensibility to her work.

There will be at least 10 vendors with incredible products participating in re:design.

n A personal favourite is the Old Fashioned Christmas Sale at the Old Log Church. It takes place Nov.

21 and 28 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. It is different from other craft sales with heritage and vintage inspired ornaments and children’s toys. This year is the 8th annual sale, which is a fundraiser for the Yukon Church Heritage Society.

It is a great opportunity to visit a heritage building and Whitehorse landmark.

n Sugar Plum Craft Fair! Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? Mark your calendars again: Nov. 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Westmark Whitehorse. Krista Klassen is the coordinator and a vendor. This is the third year for Sugar Plum. A stay-at-home mom, Klassen crafts for the love of creating and to pass on skills to her children. Thirteen participants will offer children’s clothing, jewelry, stationery and traditional beading. A variety of at-home businesses have also been invited to participate.

n Christmas Market at The Old Fire Hall is organized by Judy Matechuk and she wants you to stay downtown after work on Fri-

day, Dec. 4 and pop by. The sale runs noon to 7 p.m. and will include fabric artists, jewelry, prints, pottery and Loco Roca chocolates. It will be a nice mixture of new and established crafters.

n Laura Prentice hosts the Littlest Art and Craft Fair this year on Saturday, Dec. 5 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 56 Carpiquet Rd. in Takhini North. This fair, in its 17th year, is organized by Lara Melnik.

n The 12 Days of Christmas Market takes place Dec. 11 to 22 at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre.

It opens every day at 10 a.m.

n There are other craft sales happening, too, so keep your eyes open for posters around town.

Rallying Together to Honour and Protect Women Mother of Montreal massacre murderer presents talk as part of 12-day event to end violence

I

n a community as small as the Yukon, when people begin to stand together, change is a very real possibility.

The 2015 annual 12 Days to End Violence Against Women campaign launches on Nov. 25. During these 12 days Whitehorse residents will come together in support of women in our community and take a stand against violence.

Community members young and old are coming together for this campaign. Bachelor of Social work students at Yukon College are organizing a Take Back the Night March on Nov. 26, and young builders and artists from YuKonstruct Makerspace and Splintered Craft are collaborating on an art project that will be featured during the campaign.

We are all the sister, brother, mother, daughter, son, friend, or colleague of a victim or abuser. But we can create a ripple effect of change when we all get involved.

This is the message keynote speaker Monique Lepine will present Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre. Lepine will share her story of resilience and hope as she and her community recovered from the violence committed by her son at the 1989 Montreal Massacre.

Yukoners can also take part in a workshop, called It’s Not Right, hosted by the Yukon Community Network of Older Adults and Yukon

dialogue among men and Aboriginal communities by encouraging them to pledge to never commit, condone or stay silent about violence. This year a fireside chat will be held Dec. 3 at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre Fire Pit from 7-8 p.m. for Aboriginal men to come together on this issue.

Men, women, students, seniors, families – this issue touches us all and it has many dimensions. Les Essentielles and Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre are coming together with more community partners than ever before to bring you educational and inspirational events – all designed to get everyone in our community engaged in this issue and to show how we can all play our part to make our communities safe.

Storing your out of season tires properly

IS VERY IMPORTANT! Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread, for this reason tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for any extended period! Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable.

The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.

emperatures were in the mid-30s while we were in Munich. Many of the people spoke English, but many others did not. Neither Joanne nor I speak German. We did experience moments of frustration because of miscommunications, but some of that kind of thing was to be expected.

In the late afternoons we would retreat to our hotel room, escaping the crowds, the city noise, and the heat. Our room was at the back of the hotel, overlooking a children’s playground. Although we were in the heart of the city, the street noise was muffled and replaced with the sounds of small children playing. Often they were laughing, sometimes crying, occasionally singing.

As odd as it may seem, just relaxing with the sound of children’s laughter in the background was a big highlight in our trip. Perhaps it was a refreshing reminder that children’s laughter is the same in all languages. Or maybe it was a heightened awareness of the Refugee Crisis that reminded us of the blessing to be in a place where children can laugh.

But let me back up a few days.

The things that I expected to be highlights did not always turn out the be the most memorable moments. The castles and cathedrals were impressive, but the structure that stands out in my memory was a colourful building near the city centre in Tübingen.

It had been transformed into a billboard by painting it after the manner of graffiti. That building demanded attention.

“What does it say I asked?”

“Freedom Dies with Safety,” came the reply. “It is a statement about the new law the European Union is debating in response to the Refugee Crisis.”

Other slogans on the building stated, “Refugees Welcome,” and “No Person is Illegal.”

The Refugee Crisis was always an undertone during our trip. It was always in the news, often part of prayers before meals, and the topic of the Sunday morning sermon. I think the billboard building in central Tübingen is so memorable because it is an icon for both the compassion and the passion that many of the German people felt for the refugees.

I say both compassion and passion because compassion is understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it, while passion is intensely emotional and usually leads to actually doing something.

We saw the billboard building while visiting friends in the village of Gomaringen, just a few kilometres south of Tübingen.

While the Refugee Crisis was always there in the background, there were many joyful times during our trip. Gomaringen is located on the foreland of the Swabian Mountains and is close to the Black Forest, giving us the opportunity to see both areas. To be able to do that with friends made it even better, and like the children in Munich, we laughed often.

After seeing some of both the Black Forest and Swabia, it struck me that the Swabian Mountains or as our German friends called them, Schwäbische Alb - were just as beautiful and just as special as

the Black Forest, but in their own unique way.

The hills were not as steep or as long as in the Black Forest, but the labyrinth of trails was amazing. I am not alone in this thought.

In Dresden we met an American expatriate who asked, “What other places have you seen in Germany?” When we mention Tübingen, she exclaimed, “Ah, Swabia!” in much the same voice that we would exclaim, “Ah, Tombstone!”

We also spent a couple of days visiting new friends a little to the west of Bonn, in the village of Swisttal-Olheim. Another big highlight of our trip was getting to know our new friends and especially one evening when they took us to see the beautiful historical town of Bad Münstereifel. They told us that Bad Münstereifel was where tourists from other parts of Europe spend their holidays, and we could understand why.

In total, we spent a week visiting friends and another two weeks viewing some of the more common tourist destinations. We traveled with a Rail Pass and backpacks to Munich, Dresden, Lübeck and Heidelberg. We also took a bus tour to Harburg and Rothenburg. I am glad that we went to all of those places, but they are another story.

I would like to thank Condor, What’s Up Yukon, and Uniglobe Speciality Travel for making our trip possible. We were blessed.

hat happened to the kids from the class of 2009? Where are they all now, six years later? They must have finished their studies or done their travelling. Do they have kids? Government jobs?

I do know what life is like for Austin Davignon and Alexander Chisholme; Alexander is my son and Austin is his long time friend. They both went to different schools in Whitehorse and met each other on their bikes at jumps in and around Whitehorse.

They live in Whistler, B.C. now, the summer mecca of mountain biking.

They live with, share adventures and collaborate with others from the Yukon. Our Yukon kids away from home, I tend to think, stick together as family. At the moment, in the house they occupy, they are dealing with a black mold problem. All part of life as a grown-up.

They have created a good life for themselves. They never seem to be short of work in their world of mountain biking.

I saw them in action years ago at Mount Sima. Austin contacted a big name company that organizes promotional events. Mount Sima, under the guidance of Austin, and together with Alexander, built some massive mountain bike jumps. They competed in the event and both took the podium.

For the past three summers they have both have good jobs in Whistler working for Joyride Bike Parks building the Red Bull

The winter is bringing Austin back to Mount Sima for a bit – look for him there this month.

But just before they got settled for winter, the guys went to Virgin, Utah for the Freeride Mountain Bike World Tour’s Diamond event called the Red Bull Rampage in October.

It is the second year in a row Alexander has been on the digteam of Brandon Semenuk, who is the keeper of the overall title of the 2014 Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour. He and hundreds more young adults sweated for a few weeks digging in the red dust, since each competitor designs and builds their own line in the Virgin Mesa with the help of their own crew.

The sport has big name sponsors and each individual athlete their own sponsors, too.

October 18 was the big day.

Videos from the event can be found online. Although the competition is not for the faint of heart, it’s a stunning landscape to enjoy from the comfort of your living room. It’s an extreme sport in the desert heat while here the temperatures flirted with zero.

Soon, the guys will be seen around town, as Alexander Chisholme and Austin Davignon are planning to be home in Whitehorse for Christmas.

Word Play for Early Readers

Reader’s Theatre offers laughs and learning for preschoolers

E

xperienced readers know that words make a world within a story come alive.

However, for early readers, sometimes they need the world around them to help the words on the page come alive.

The Family Literacy Centre at the Canada Games Centre has just the ticket: Reader’s Theatre, an interactive tool for learning to read.

Reader’s Theatre is a method where stories become scripts that the learners read out loud, as if on stage. There are no costumes and no blocking, so readers don’t move around on stage.

Scripts are not memorized as with conventional plays. In fact, it’s key to the method that they aren’t memorized.

Rather, the stories are read and re-read as learners try out different voices and ways of saying something.

The first time through, readers work on simply deciphering the words. With subsequent readings, they add meaning and expression to the sentences. This repetition builds fluency, comprehension and confidence.

“The parent typically has the child choose the book and choose their character,” explains, Katy Mead, manager of the centre.

SUPPORTING YUKON FAMILIES The Yukon Child Tax Benefit has been providing support to families with children since 1999, and the Yukon government is proud to have raised the value of the benefit from $690 to $820 annually, an increase of 18.8 per cent. The threshold at which parents continue to receive the full benefit has also increased from $30,000 to $35,000.

Previously, a single parent of two children earning $35,000 a year received a benefit of $1,130 per year. Today, that family will receive a benefit of $1,640 per year.

“They’re learning how to read from left to right, and how those words become real dialogue,” she says. “Any activity that includes fun and laughter will give them a positive association with the activity. When you do it with books, you install a trust in that child that reading can be as fun as they want to make it.”

The performance aspect of Reader’s Theatre reinforces the real world applicability of written words for early readers.

Mead explains that children tend to learn better if they hear and read something in different ways. Ask a tired parent how easy it is to go into autopilot when reading a familiar book, rather

than to change up the voices and intonation each time.

Reader’s Theatre is interactive by its nature, and requires different voices and styles of expression.

They also use props and costumes with the toddlers.

“Having tactile props helps children learn written words because it’s multisensory learning, not just visual,” Mead says.

The Family Literacy Centre staff often use the books of American author Mo Willems, whose several early reader series have made him the Dr. Seuss of a new generation. His funny early reader books consist only of dialogue with short phrases and repetition, animated with energetic drawings.

One series features an elephant and a pig, which are conveniently among the most common costumes and puppets found in a typical toddler tickle trunk.

Any comic book or graphic novel type of book works well for Reader’s Theatre. Furthermore, any children’s book with a lot of dialogue, such as the Frog and Toad stories, can be easily adapted into a script in one’s own home. An experienced reader can read the narration while the learner reads the dialogue.

The Family Literacy Centre is located in the Canada Games Centre. It is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Chilkoot Pass: The Challenge Of My Summer

T

his summer my family and I hiked the Chilkoot Pass.

When we kids learned we were actually going, the first response was “Why?” and “I don’t want to!” We got over it and realized that we were, in fact, going to go no matter what our opinion was. Eventually, when we were actually hiking, we realized that it was beautiful, and we started enjoying it!

We had to prep for the hike, and we didn’t have hiking boots, so each of us had to get a pair.

That turned into an event and a half. We were in Calgary, and we came across a shop that had hiking boots on sale. We went in, and we had to choose a pair of hiking boots. All the pairs I wanted, Mom didn’t want to get, so we had an argument, and I tried to get Daddy on my side, but he just agreed with Mom. Eventually, while saying “I won’t wear them,” got a pair of blue hiking boots. I didn’t like them at the time, but on the trip I was grateful for them. I would have had blisters without them.

One of the things that I didn’t like about the Chilkoot was the first breakfast that we had to eat. We had buckwheat, which is an oatmeal kind of dish. It tasted very good to Mom and Dad, but we thought it was disgusting.

We had to eat it all on the first day, but after that we ate leftover supper for breakfast. When we had finished it the first morning, we were halfway to tears, and made an oath that we would never eat buckwheat again.

PHOTO: kozzi.com The most eventful animal we saw was a swimming caribou. I spotted him in Long Lake, trying to beat the heat in the lake. I wished I could do the same, but we didn’t have bathing suits and we would never be allowed to go swimming – it would waste precious time. We took video of him swimming, and then moved on. Just before we left that area we saw him running up the mountain, pausing to eat once in awhile.

The first thing we saw on the first morning was a glacier. It is called the Irene Glacier, and it looks magnificent in the sun’s rays. You can see the waterfall from the campsite, Finnegan’s Point, and it was gorgeous.

Then there was the Golden Staircase. It was annoying.

“They had it easier in the 1800s” the warden told us.

They could make stairs out of snow, and had a rope to hold onto. They didn’t have to climb over rocks, and they had sleds and packers to haul stuff. Not fair. There should be an escalator; call it the Golden Escalator.

What a good idea!

Overall, I thought it was a nice hike. It just took some time to get used to the idea that we were going. I recommend it for those who are up to a challenge.

It was beautiful and fun.
