H

e may be a classicallytrained pianist, but Chris Donnelly doesn’t get bent out of shape if his instrument is less than brilliantly tuned.

“There’s nothing inherently bad about an untuned piano. It just sounds different. It has its own vibe,” he says.

Donnelly is the pianist with the Toronto jazz trio Myriad3. Along with bassist Daniel Fortin and percussionist Ernesto Cervini, he’s en route to the Yukon for two upcoming concerts.

Except for Cervini, who will be packing his own cymbals, none of the three will be playing their own instruments. And that suits them just fine.

“Some gigs are more challenging than others,” Cervini admits. “But then sometimes I play a drum set that I like better than my own.”

“I’ve played other people’s basses and said, ‘I wish this was mine,’” Fortin agrees.

As Fortin explains it, Myriad3 became a group in 2010, more or less by accident.

“Chris and Ernesto were about to play a gig with a bass player who got hurt. He called me last minute to sub in for him,” he says.

“A few weeks later, Ernesto and I were supposed to play with a different piano player and Chris had to sub in. So after two times in a row, it gelled in a certain way.

We kind of felt there was a bit of a different vibe going on there.”

From the outset, the three adopted a collaborative approach, deciding to focus on their own material, rather than leaning on the standard American jazz canon.

“We all three write for the band, but nobody really minces words,” Fortin says. “Somebody will bring a song and we all change it, just to make sure it fits the band’s voice as a whole.”

The fact that Myriad3 has a coherent voice may seem surprising, given the different musical backgrounds of its members.

“Like a lot of bass players, I started playing a lot of rock and roll, and kind of coming out of pop music,” Fortin says. “Chris and Ernesto both studied classical music a little bit more.”

Cervini played classical piano and clarinet for years, and took up drumming in high school. He got hooked on jazz through one of his older sisters, who is now a jazz vocalist in New York City.

“I heard her playing this stuff and I fell in love with it,” he says.

For his part, Donnelly was dual threat from an early age.

“All through my childhood, I was taking jazz lessons at one school (Humber College Community Music School) and classical lessons at another school (Toronto Conservatory),” he explains.

Fortin characterizes the trio’s sound as “pretty contemporary”, drawing from a range of musical genres.

“As young people, we didn’t

start out listening to jazz music.

We listened to a lot of pop, and we still listen to a lot of different stuff — pop music, electronic music, classical music, R&B, hip hop, all kinds of stuff.”

All three studied music at University of Toronto before being “released into the working world, the musical world,” as Donnelly puts it.

The economic realities of that world require Myriad3’s members to share a wide variety of organizational duties in addition to playing — everything from grant writing to tour booking and promotion, web design, and social networking.

“Our organization as a band is similar to how we organize it musically, with all these different hats we have to wear all the time,” Donnelly says.

Whether or not his pianos are in tune, Donnelly says the group isn’t expecting “any kind of formality” in its two Yukon performances.

“We’re going to have fun.

We’re going to hang out,” he says.

Myriad3 will give a Jazz on the Wing concert at the Yukon Arts Centre on Sunday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. They will be at the Odd Fellows Hall in Dawson City on Wednesday, November 19.

Y

ukoners are creative when it comes to shopping — the popularity of garage sales, ski swaps, and Facebook buy-andsell pages testify to this.

It’s therefore not surprising that the territory’s craft-fair-percapita rating is through-the-roof this time of year.

Whitehorse residents may think of Spruce Bog, because, as Angela Szymchuk writes on page 5, it is the mother of all craft fairs.

But the mother spawned.

What follows is an offspring directory, of sorts. The list is missing some; there are a lot of them.

Dawson City alone hosts at least five pre-Christmas sales.

The Dawson daycare bazaar is on Nov. 15 at Robert Service School; the 10,000 Villages Sale is on Nov. 21 and 22 at Robert Service School; the Farmerettes Christmas Tea and Craft fair is the following day, on Nov 23. The United Church hosts another Bazaar on Nov. 29 in the South Beach United Church upper hall. KIAC is throwing a craft and art fair the same day, in the Odd Fellows Hall.

On Dec. 13, the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in host the Last Minute Bazaar at the TH community hall.

Okay, six sales to choose from, at least.

And if Dawsonites want to make it more, they can travel to Mayo for the WIG’s Bazaar. WIG stands for Women’s Interdenominational Group; women in Mayo started it back when women didn’t work — they needed a way to get out of the house. So WIG was formed and Mayo women got together and crafted, mostly.

Handmade soap is just one of many things you might find at one of the craft fairs throughout the Yukon WIGs craft fair tradition started; she just knows it was a long time ago. Lattie says the Mayo bazaar is always held on the last weekend of November. This year, that makes it Nov. 29, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the community hall.

Lattie says it’s a popular event; it signifies the beginning of the Christmas season. Artisans sell jewelry, soap, knitting, moccasins, and mukluks. Most of the goods are made by people who live in or around Mayo, but vendors have been coming from Pelly Crossing and Dawson for years.

Whitehorse is the capital city of the Yukon for a reason; because it has the most craft fairs.

One was held last weekend. There are some this weekend. The Lignonberry Affair is at the Rah Rah Gallery on Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Five artists will be there, selling wares, and the espresso machine will be up and running.

A Whitehorse fair happening later in the season, closer to Christmas, is the First Nations Craft Fair. It’s on Dec. 13 at Elijah Smith Elementary School. It’s not in the gym; it’s in the entrance foyer.

Melissa Bennett, the principal of the school, says that’s to make the fair intimate. It’s as much a sale as it is a means for people to get together and “break bread”.

Bennett’s been organizing the fair for three years, now. She says she wants something reminiscent of the Native Craft Fair that used to be held during Rendezvous.

Bennett says she used to go to those fairs, “on her grandma’s hip”.

She says table fees, among other things, make other fairs inaccessible to First Nations people.

At this fair, table spaces are bought by donation.

People come from across the Yukon to participate. They sell moccasins, beadwork, fur things, knives, carvings, weavings, soap, herbs, and medicines.

There are plenty of places to buy things like caramel popcorn, scarves, silver necklaces, gift baskets, homemade bread, paintings, pottery, metal sculptures, photographs, things made out of broken glass, lemon tortes, Christmas tree decorations, baby slippers, and woven alpaca wool scarves.

They don’t even have to be Christmas gifts; you can keep them for yourself.

They haven’t found a good use for it yet, but they are still looking.

There are other key buildings in town. While interviewing Latvian roller-skier Raymond Dombrovskis, during the recreation of his 1988 trip from Inuvik to Baja, I watched some of the video footage of the original trip. As his crew rolled down Princess Street, I was startled to see the decrepit state of the Odd Fellows Hall; this was 11-years before the Dawson City Arts Society got hold of it and turned it into the ele-

That was one of the two successful projects that Greg Hakonson talked about at the recent Klondike Development Organization forum, “Opportunities in our Heritage Buildings”. The other was the transformation of the old liquor store, featured by Ken Bolton a few weeks ago in the What’s Up Yukon profile on Hakonson.

With housing being an issue, one of the highlights of that meeting was Trina Buhler’s account of how she had restored (and in one case rebuilt) three historic small houses that were residences for the North American Transportation and Trading Company; they have since been sold.

Parks Canada has many buildings to look after.

They are hoping to spend some money on St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, which is looking more and more inebriated in recent years. The Old Court House on Front Street, which has also served as a hospital, Park’s head-

quarters, Yukon College, and assorted YG offices, is in the midst of a stalled renovation; stalled because there are many more problems inside than the initial studies revealed.

This happens.

The Palace Grand Theatre had to be completely rebuilt in the 1960s to make way for a proposed drama festival that never got off the ground .

The replacement is now nearly historic itself, has had some in-

terior improvements last summer, and will be getting a new sound system for next summer.

The old CIBC building on Front Street, where Robert Service once manned a teller’s cage, was purchased by the City of Dawson in 2013. Hopes of a speedy restoration were dashed when toxic amounts of lead and asbestos were discovered. The town will have to lay out some big bucks before it can continue the building’s revival.

While it’s lovely that we have so many classic buildings, and that they are such an attraction for our visitors, they certainly present challenges as well as opportunities.

Behind the scenes at Spruce Bog

T

he Yukon is known for its craft fairs. From Dawson to Faro to Teslin, each community has its own craft niche.

But when you get to Whitehorse, the niche transforms into something almost limitless called Spruce Bog. Entering its 39th year, Spruce Bog continues to grow. With its humble beginning at F.H. Collins, before moving to the spacious Canada Games Centre, Spruce Bog has definitely made a name for itself.

The craft fair, held on November 15 at the Canada Games Centre, proudly boasts Yukon-made products, while also including vendors from our little sister, Atlin, B.C. The variety of items available is vast, including homemade candies, jams, gluten-free goods, dog

biscuits, stained glass windows, woodcarvings, and more.

So how do you plan the Yukon’s biggest craft show?

Organizer and Yukon Craft Society member Pam Charman, has been the head of Spruce Bog for 22 years. Here’s how Spruce Bog goes from an idea to a real life festivity.

It’s not surprising that craft vendors eagerly vie to get a spot at Spruce Bog. And Charman always does her best to accommodate everyone.

The comfort and layout of the vendors is very important. Charman makes sure if people have allergies, they are placed far away from anything that would cause a flare-up.

“We don’t want all the same category of vendors in the same place either. It’s important for me to have an even spread so that there is a nice flow.”

Stage Three: The Launch For Charman, the launch would not be complete if she was not involved —150 pecan logs have been prepared from her kitchen. And like a true boss she keeps it in the family as well.

“My son has created some unique jams with alcohol content,” she says. “Last year he did screwdriver marmalade, and this year he is planning strawberry margarita jam.”

Each Spruce Bog can be quite tiring but Charman believes the craft show really benefits Yukoners.

“Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from supporting large corporations, and support local artisans. It also helps to keep the local economy going too.”

Spruce Bog runs from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Canada Games Centre. With a 10:15 opening for seniors and those with mobility issues.

“While writing, I just throw everything out on the paper, in a manic self-confession,” Knausgaard says.

He has touched a lot of readers, especially men, with his unconventional storytelling. One man in the audience said that he cried a lot while reading Knausgaard’s books, another reader said that Knausgaard reflects his inner world.

From Norway to Iceland: Sjon started his writing career as a poet and songwriter for Bjork before writing novels. Now his novels are translated into English, one of them, a Whispering Muse, tells the tale of a mythical hero aboard a Danish merchant ship in 1949. Unlike the other authors, Sjon did not read from his book, he entertained the audience with stories, like the story of his first visit to Canada, 25 years ago: He was sent straight to White-

horse, to represent Iceland at a story-telling festival. Upon his arrival, he realized he had no stories to tell, only poems.

“They placed me in a tent, and I hoped nobody would come and ask for a story,” he says. “But two men showed up, and luckily I remembered a tale of my childhood.”

It was in Whitehorse where he learned something essential; a First Nations storyteller told him that he had only one story to tell.

When Sjon asked him to tell the story, he said that it is divided in two parts, which are each divided into four parts and that it would take days to tell the story.

That was when Sjon realized “that every book, every poem, is just a fragment of a bigger story, which the universe has given us”.

Storytelling and mythology are also essential for Thomas King, who has recently published his novel The Back of the Turtle.

His book tells the story of Gabriel Quinn, a scientist who comes back to his reserve to find his community gone. He finds a young girl in the waves of a river, and people who have fallen from the sky. King weaves Christian and First Nations mythology together.

“When you think about Genesis in the Bible, the world starts as paradise and then chaos arises.

In most First Nations stories it is the other way: It starts with chaos and the narrator puts the world together, and that is what I want to do as a writer.”

The Vancouver Writers Festival shows that storytelling in its new and old forms is a tradition that will not become extinct, because people will always need stories.

Documentary series confronts World War II

O

nce peace is waged what do we remember about the battlefields? Tales of war can become like the whispering game after a few generations have passed, apart from the “official versions” of the truth.

But World War II caused the earth to shift for Europe, and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) didn’t let the stories die with the soldiers. In BBC History of World War II, 10 DVDS totalling 30 hours and available at the Whitehorse Public Library, a remarkable record has been gathered from a series of television programs produced between 1989 and 2005.

Atlantic was especially thrilling, documenting German U-boats — “wolfpacks” — lurking beneath the sea and terrorizing British supply ships, until the cracking of the Enigma code precipitated a dramatic turnaround.

The producers’ painstaking thoroughness is especially satisfying in this segment, with military strategy and British and German generals studied in detail, and interviews with the naval officers from both sides who tell hair-raising stories of battle and survival.

Look for a candid photo of Karl Dönitz, German commander of the U-boat campaign, accepting a token gift from a dishevelled Hitler late in the war. Dönitz’s weary distrust of the unstable dictator is palpable.

Other highlights in the series include a docudrama about the evacuation of Dunkirk, a comprehensive study of the war on the Eastern Front (The War of the Century: When Hitler Fought Stalin), an evaluation of the RAF Bomber Command, and two discs devoted to D-Day — D-Day 6.6.1944 and DDay to Berlin. The series concludes with two discs about the horrors of the concentration camps and the Final Solution.

The inherent drama of World War II and its lasting impact on our 21st century psyches, depicted with rich archival sources, eyewitness accounts, and high production values make this documentary series compelling and necessary viewing.

The programs are presented in roughly chronological order, but there are variations in the presentation of each program. For example, some integrate dramatizations of the events with factual audio-visual material, while others rely on a reportorial and analytic approach.

Academic experts were involved in the productions and serve as presenters on several programs.

The set begins with an in-depth look at the rise and fall of Nazi Germany, The Nazis: A Warning From History, which includes stunning footage of the conspicuous parading and revelry that marked the early years.

T

he first snow is a long-anticipated event for me.

It is not only eagerness, but also apprehension, that keeps me company on my tenterhooks. Either way, there is relief when the white stuff finally flies.

I missed the first two snows that came and went, so I was truly chomping at the bit by the time I woke up to my first solid, snowy morning, earlier this week.

The arrival of that coat of white signifies the end of the growing season, the end of the jobs I continue to do while the weather holds, and the end of berry-picking. One more day without snow? Surely there is something I must do that I won’t be able to do tomorrow.

Snow closes the door firmly on fall and opens up the broad expanse of magical winter, with its cozy insides and crisp outsides.

The world is brighter than it was during the in-between time of shrinking daylight and dark, snowless ground.

A particular delight of mine comes in the form of tracks; the movements of creatures and people, to which my dim human senses are blind in the summer, become crystal clear on the fresh white canvas. On this particular day, I see that before I have emerged from the warm cocoon of my cabin my dog has made dozens of circuits around the property and my resident squirrel has established a new cache of mushrooms in my shed, to which I am led by a tiny runway laid down by four scurrying, hurrying paws.

A friend comes out to join me on a walk, and we are accompanied by coyotes, foxes and marten, who have all passed this way since

the snow ceased falling early this morning. It is as if I have been awakened, and can “see” with a new sense.

One who is absent from our meanderings is the grouse.

Where there were veritable flocks a few weeks ago, exploding from the underbrush of spruce trees like so many turboprops, not a trace is to be found now. We shoulder our weapons philosophically; a few grouse would have been nice, but the walk is plenty worth it without.

In a bid to bring home some sustenance for the body as well as the spirit we head to a nearby river and throw in lines for grayling. We can see them in the clear water between the shelves of ice forming on the banks — dark, lithe

shapes, swirling in the current, then flashing silver as they rise to the surface.

Here we have more luck, and we feel we have earned it by the chill that has set into our bones, brought on by the wind rushing down the river.

When we have had enough, we return to the car with a beautiful brace of fish, and I sink happily into the passenger seat, still warm from the dog waiting patiently for us to return.

Who would have thought the long-anticipated snow would bring such contentment?

INGREDIENTS 1 onion 1 Tbsp. seasoning salt (or salt and herbs) 1 Tbsp. butter 2-4 Tbsp. flour (any kind, including gluten-free) METHOD Preheat oven to 350°F. T

he phrase “food security” is becoming common, and it can be interpreted in several different ways.

Whether it is a lack of food due to environmental conditions, the inability to access nutritious food because of financial restraints, or the lack of food due to remote location — these are all are considered examples of “food insecurity”.

In the North we experience food insecurity every time we see empty grocery shelves when a truck doesn’t arrive. In fact, it was because of a trip to the grocery store that we started farming.

We had gone to pick up some basic groceries during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. But the shelves that normally held milk, eggs, and butter were completely bare.

Being new to the Yukon, this was not something I was used to, so I asked an employee why there was no food; the truck wasn’t due to arrive until the following Monday.

That spring we started raising chickens for eggs.

As Yukoners, we learn to deal with this and accept it as normal; this is an example of how fragile our current food system is. If the road were cut off for a substantial amount of time, for any reason, there would be a lot of hungry folks around here.

The solution isn’t bigger farms down south or bigger farms up here. The solution is to take it into our own hands.

This might mean starting small, by growing tomatoes on the deck.

From there, it could increase to a small garden with chickens to provide eggs or rabbits for meat.

But if someone doesn’t have the inclination to grow her own food, but still wants more food security, there are options.

This summer, the Fireweed Community Market ran two days a week, drawing different people to the Saturday market than the usual Thursday crowd. The number of farmers at the markets also increased.

For the past couple of years, schools have raised money with “From the Ground Up”. This program sources vegetables from a local farm and sells them to raise

funds. This year they added an organic farm to give people that option.

The Potluck Food Co-op has had an online grocery store for almost a year; they have also almost outgrown the building they’re using.

They focus on food grown or made as locally as possible, preferring Yukon produce to anything else.

Thus they enable Yukon farmers to have a constant market.

Not only are they benefitting themselves with increased food security, they are also helping the local economy by supporting local farmers.

As the demand for local food grows, hopefully there will be more producers to meet that demand; this will strengthen the food security we are starting to build.

“T

here aren’t many opportunities for francophone artists to try more experimental performances in our regular community shows; that’s how we came up with the concept of Onde de choc,” says Virginie Hamel, manager of the cultural branch for l’Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY).

Hamel put a call out for artists to submit pieces in all performing arts disciplines, and for the second edition of Onde de choc, there will be dance-theatre, short movies, and music taking over the Yukon Arts Centre stage on November 14th.

“The show is mostly musical this year, which makes it very accessible to non-French speakers.” explains Hamel. “I gave the theme of ‘art is all over’ to the artists as a common ground for everyone to create on.”

‘Art is all over’ is an artistic movement with roots in Montreal and Vancouver. It was born from the desire of artists Ian Baxter (Vancouver) and Marcel Duchamp (Montreal) to take art outside galleries and theatres, into unusual

spaces of the city — to make and offer art everywhere.

Having such a theme on the most institutional stage of the Yukon can be a challenge. Musical director Olivier de Colombel found his own meaning.

“

“Michel brings an important set design component to the show that ties everything together visually,” says Hamel.

“Last year was our first experience with this format. We tried to please everyone and we ended up with a huge show with about 30 artists,” she says. “This year we have less numbers, with more of a mise-en-scène that allows each piece to breathe.”

Kastner admits it’s depressing if we look at all this waste in a negative way, but it makes her curious about people and how they live.

“The amount of garbage can be overwhelming and alarming — when we feel like that, art works through it and figures it out,” she says.

The Waste Land will be in the ODD Gallery until December 6, 2014. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays 1 to 5 p.m.

ndrea Kastner has been fascinated by garbage for years.

The Montreal native, who now makes her home in Hamilton, Ontario became interested in waste while thinking about how we, as a society, relate to our possessions.

“We take things with us, ignore that we own them, then throw them out,” she says.

“It’s a world of duality — we live in one world, while the other is shadowed, ignored, and not acknowledged.”

Kastner’s garbage idea has taken many forms. She started by digging through bags of household waste, then making a list of the contents.

“It was very interesting,” says Kastner. “People throw out weird stuff.”

Each bag of garbage, she says, became a portrait of the person who threw it out.

“I realized that a lot of people’s lives end up in the garbage.”

She feels that even though a landfill is teeming with people’s stuff, they choose to disavow it.

Which is why, says Kastner, her latest project suggests that people should agree waste exists and refrain from ignoring it.

“You can’t help but act differently once you acknowledge the problem,” she says. “My role here is being an artist — I’m bringing all

this to life.”

The Wasteland is a series of paintings that toured Kamloops, Montreal, Hamilton, Courtenay, and is in Dawson City until December 6, 2014 for its final stop.

The imagery for The Wasteland was gathered by traveling to landfills, searching through archives, digging through bags of household garbage, and documenting the alleyways of the cities that Kastner has lived in.

These images were then put together as a collage. By doing this, Kastner says she reintegrates them and makes them into something else, bringing them back to life.

“By taking different images and making them into one, I’ve unified them again.”

While in Dawson, Kastner is looking forward to visiting the local landfill.

“Dawson seems to have a different relationship to the landfill,” she says, referring to how Dawsonites have free access to the dump and often re-use some of its contents.

Kastner says her work may gross people out, but they still can’t help but be interested.

“People interpret this art in a weird way — they know what they’re doing with their stuff but don’t necessarily want to acknowledge it. But if I’m careful and at-

Fossilized Turtle, 37 million years old

S

id van der Meer has lived in Beaver Creek, Yukon since 1997. He’s made a comfortable home for himself, and a charming museum for friends and visitors. His collectables can be found in both his museum and his home.

As you walk in the front door of van der Meer’s home, you are greeted by all sorts of fascinating antiques. There is a small display area close to the front door to show off some of his most interesting and delicate pieces.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of small treasures displayed on the shelves in van der Meer’s home. As he goes shelf to

shelf, he talks about his favourites. He pauses at a shelf dedicated to fossils he traded for, bought, or found. He picks up a pie-sized fossil and begins to tell its story.

“We (the previous owner of the fossil and van der Meer) decided to do a trade,” he explains.

“I traded an old fridge for it from Alberta. It was (carbon dated) at the Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta. That place is world famous for dinosaurs.” Gently passing the fossil to me, he excitedly says, “They dated it at 37 million years-old; that turtle is 37 million years-old!”

It is heavy and very much stone, but the shell of the turtle can still

be seen. This fossil is extremely exciting to see and to hold.

“I just wanted to add it to my collection and have had it ever since,” he says.

The fossil itself is from Nebraska, and has a certificate of authenticity from the Royal Tyrrell Museum. This turtle would have lived in either the Eocene Epoch or Oligocene Epoch. The fossilization of the turtle’s shell allows it to be easily recognizable today.

“It still looks like a turtle.”

Van der Meer shows me the indentation on both the turtle’s shell as well as the underbelly of the fossilized turtle.

“Makes for a good pet because

I don’t have to feed it,” he says.

He takes the 37 million yearold fossilized turtle from me and places it next to a large ammonite fossil. His collection never ceases to amaze me or his visitors and guests.

Not many people can say they’ve seen a fossilized turtle, and less can say they own one, but van der Meer can.

Sid van der Meer welcomes everyone to his Bordertown Garage & Museum, which will reopen in April 2015.

I

t’s not often I give myself an impossible writing assignment but I’m doing so now because I’m intrigued by the challenge.

Book reviews often have aim to provide a concise summary and make the reader want to read the book.

Not this time.

I’m only halfway through Tom Robbins’ non-autobiography called Tibetan Peach Pie, and, so far, I can’t think of a single good reason to recommend it or, indeed, to finish it. It’s like reading postcards from the past, from a relative you didn’t like in the first place. It took Robbins 244 pages to recall something I wanted to read about.

For those of you under 40, which according to Yukon demographics is most of you, here is a very brief biography on Robbins and why it should interest you: The man, 82, a self-defined “hillbilly from North Carolina” who now lives in the Puget Sound region, was huge in the hipsquare-everywhere era of “Gonzo Journalism” as defined by Hunter S. Thompson and typified by Tom Wolfe, P.J. O’Rourke, and many other great writers not named “Robbins”.

His monster best sellers are familiar if not memorable: Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, Another Roadside Attraction, Still Life With Woodpecker, Jitterbug Perfume, Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas, Wild Ducks Flying Backwards, and B Is for Beer, to mention the best known.

Though he’s made millions, I don’t recall ever finishing one of his books because his writing style is too jumbled and jumpy — possibly caused by heavy usage of psychedelic drugs — and flows like scrambled eggs or, perhaps, a burnt omelet.

He is no more of a spokesman for the Gonzo crowd than Mr. Bean, though mentions himself in the same sentence with Thompson, the King of Gonzo, in this self-absorbed screed; this is like mentioning The Three Stooges in the same sentence as Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Therefore, no surprise here, Tibetan Peach Pie reads like a dog’s breakfast looks, and Robbins makes the same mistake as

this piece of pie is his last hurrah.

But I am at a complete loss to explain why, because, to me his writings are the literary equivalent of being forced to listen to someone who has been drinkSUMMERTIME HOURS ing too much coffee or eatOpen 9-6 daily ing too many peyote buttons.

He’s a magnificent wordsmith, has often been called a genius, and has the money in the bank to prove he’s at the end of a successful career if, indeed, most me-biographers by starting at the beginning, which means we have to hear about his first diaper change, his first erection, his first “love” (Natalie Wood), his first teacher with Grand Tetons, and the first time he knew he was destined for literary greatness (age five), before we get to anything more interesting than a lifelong fascination with his own wordy, navel-novels.

No Caribou Hunting on South Dempster Hwy Environment Yukon has ordered an emergency closure for caribou hunting in Game Management Subzones 2-16, 2-23, 2-27, 2-28 and 2-39, starting November 5. The affected area includes the Dempster Highway from kilometre 77 (North Fork Pass) to kilometre 195 (Ogilvie River Bridge).

The Writing Is On The Plant Yukon artist Helen O’Connor

brings paper to a whole new level.

T

he Yukon is known for its vibrant fireweed; it’s used to make jelly, soap, and artwork. For Yukon-based artist Helen O’Connor, fireweed provides material for artistic paper.

But the Yukon’s official flower is not the only plant she grinds to a pulp. The art adventurer has also used grass, clover, and even flax to make different kinds of paper. Having done a workshop during Whitehorse Culture Days this past September, O’Connor is keen to get back in the studio to experiment with more creations.

“One of the best parts about making paper from plants is anticipating what the final product will look like,” O’Connor says.

Learning to make decora-

tive paper from plants has been no walk in the park. A few years back, O’Connor traveled to the Emerald Isle for an artist residency to learn some ancient secrets about the process. She discovered a plethora of knowledge.

“I was very intrigued how the plant, stinging nettle, was used to make paper. It’s such a strong tall fiber, I would have never thought you could make paper from it,” she says.

While in Ireland, she also discovered some old world methods bookbinding. Book making goes back 2000 years, with its origins in China and Japan.

With a new wealth of artistic knowledge, O’Connor became inspired to film her work. She has

plans to release it at a future exhibit alongside a collection of new creations.

Once back in the Yukon, O’Connor continued to practice what she learned while abroad.

“Making paper out of flax is by far the most challenging method,” she says.

The pioneering artist even went as far as growing her own flax in five varieties. After years of experimentation, she finally mastered it.

The way natural light interacts with the paper further captures the O’Connor’s mind. Occasionally, she will create paper sculptures to display this abstract balance.

Next on O’Connor’s roster is

experimentation with paper patterns, shapes, and possibly clothing to showcase the intricate concepts of sexuality and shame.

She also has plans to integrate industrial and technological mediums, and collaborate with other artists. She is still working out the ideas and details of her next exhibit, and hopes to showcase her work in the spring of 2015.

“Artistic paper is an obscure medium, not too many people do it. In a world that constantly relies on technology, I hope to keep this art alive.”

Avoiding Hypothermia

W

e all have a tendency to think, “it can’t happen to me”, but those who have spent any time out on the land have had at least the early stages of hypothermia. Think back to how many times you have goose-bumps, chattering teeth, and a deep chill that was hard to shake off. Those are all early stages of hypothermia, the number one killer in the great outdoors.

When these indicators appear, we most commonly put on another layer, have a warm drink, or do a five-minute exercise workout — or all of these, which chases away that chilly feeling.

It’s best to avoid any chance of hypothermia by following some basic steps: First of all, always carry adequate clothing for the forecasted weather. Yukon weather can change quickly, so carry extra clothes at the bottom of your daypack, in your truck, boat, or canoe. These extra clothes take up very little room and you will be pleased you brought them if the weather changes, or if you’re wet from exertion, rain, or a boating mishap.

Dressing in layers is the secret to being comfortably warm; layers can be added or removed as needed to keep you comfortable. Sadly, too many people wait until they are cold before adding a layer, or all sweated-up before removing one.

Modern garments, with zippers in the armpits and the out-seam of the pants, allow venting, which can help you stay constant, temperature-wise. Layers of non-itch

merino wool, or modern manufactured materials such as pile or fleece, combined with a weatherproof top layer, are ideal. Cotton is never a good choice for any layer — cotton takes water right into the fibres rather than between the fibres as modern high-tech material does. As a result, cotton feels damp and soggy against our skin, which uses up our body heat and feels cold and uncomfortable.

A hat is an often-overlooked clothing item that really affects our ability to keep warm. An uncovered head, especially a stylishly bald one, can lose up to 50 percent of your body heat. An ordinary peaked cap is good for shading your eyes and keeping some heat in, but a dependable woollen toque or roll-up balaclava should always be in your kit for some real thermal efficiency.

The early stages of hypothermia are very common and if dealt with immediately, disappear very quickly. However, ignoring these early indicators can very quickly lead to a life-threatening situation. Carry extra clothes and keep an eye on one another, so early detection and treatment is part of your outdoors routine.
