any Yukoners are involved in global issues and a series of talks at the Kwanlin Dϋn Cultural Centre brings their international experiences home.

The Yukon Development Education Centre is hosting the free lectures in Whitehorse called the Sustainable Global Development Speaker Series.

Presented on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m., themes include climate change, gender equality and indigenous rights.

On Nov. 12 Yukoner Angela Code shares her experience as a Canadian Youth Delegate at the United Nations Summit, in a talk called “The Global Goals, What They Mean for Indigenous Youth, and Why I Didn’t Meet the Pope.”

At the Summit, world leaders and youth delegates discussed sustainable development goals.

Code says that it’s important to have leadership initiatives for youth such as the summit. She says her involvement gave strength to her own identity.

On Nov. 26 Yukoner Natasha Harvey will give a talk called “Challenging Gender Stereotypes with the Himalayan Adventure Girls in Nepal.” Harvey is a whitewater rafting instructor and re-

cently returned from Nepal where she taught river raft guiding to the non-profit organization supporting Nepali women called the Himalayan Adventure Girls.

While she was there, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred, changing her focus to providing direct aid to locals.

Alcock says he wanted to dedicate a month to helping in a devastated area because he believes in helping people – both near and far.

“A global view of helping the neighbours, whether it’s beside our home in the Yukon or farther... all of us are connected globally,” he says.

He says a sense of humour and a positive outlook add fun – and that’s what likely got him through “eating yak cheese and checking (his) shoes in the morning for creepy crawlers.”

This series of free talks may just expand your definition of who is a neighbour.

Still is Still Moving: Portrait of a Genius

I

n the 1870s and ‘80s English photographer Eadweard Muybridge was feverishly photographing animals, people in the nude, and people with physical deformities. He is famous for successfully producing a stop-motion sequence of still photographs demonstrating that all four legs of a horse are off the ground at a gallop.

Sallie Gardner at a Gallop, as it is known, was the product of Muybridge’s obsession with the movement of human and animal forms. With equal parts ingenuity and raving lunacy Muybridge created what was to be the beginnings of cinematography for silent film with his 1879 invention of the zoopraxiscope.

You would know this history of Muybridge and his eccentricities if you were a film or photography student, or if you attended the production of Kevin Kerr’s play Studies in Motion: The Hauntings of Eadweard Muybridge at the Yukon Arts Centre in 2009.

Six years later, the story of Eadweard Muybridge is returning to the Yukon through the medium of film. Fuelled with a grant from the Telefilm Canada Micro-Budget Production Program, writers Josh Epstein and Kyle Rideout have adapted the play to the screen.

The film captures the beauty, grace and complete emotional torment that both Muybridge and his work represent. Fascinated by the journey this project took from stage to screen I caught up Josh Epstein last week while he was in

Andrew Gilbutowicz: How did you and Kyle Rideout decide to make a film about Eadweard Muybridge?

Josh Epstein: We actually started writing together while touring the successful stage production Studies in Motion... We were always intrigued by Eadweard Muybridge’s life and wanted to dig deeper.

historical figures who never quite got his due. He is the godfather of cinema, but his obsessions got the best of him.

AG: The characters are so well crafted in the film. After working with the story as a theatre experience do you think the elements of the characters and story were analyzed differently now that you were putting them to screen?

JE: We definitely spent the most time re-evaluating the character of Flora, Eadweard’s wife. We worked diligently to make her more present in his life and give her strong goals of working alongside him, instead of just being stuck at home. We also explored her take-charge attitude in seeking Eadweard out.

The major difference, though, is that we really tried to make a film; there is nothing staged about the film. It’s incredibly cinematic. We shot all over BC, climbed mountains and found gorgeous scenery to shoot.

AG: How important is it that this

film is predominantly a Canadian production and from a theatrical background?

JE: For us it’s very important. It wasn’t completely overnight, but our background was definitely theatre and I think we’ve demonstrated that wall was not impossible to climb… Neither of us had made a feature before, but we surrounded ourselves with wonderfully competent people from the theatre and film worlds. They figured it out.

AG: What were some of the talents you brought from theatre production to the film set?

JE: The ability to work with actors. I understand actors and know how to talk to them. The theatre world also teaches you very well how to make something out of nothing.

AG: What are some things to look forward to for your workshop on developing fiction film ideas for micro-budget productions on Nov. 16?

JE: I’ve been spending a lot of time lately crafting pitches and would love to spend some time working on those. That’s step one! We will then move through step one to 1,000... Honestly, I’m excited to see what projects are brought forward and how I can better prepare them for what they will need to get the story out to the world.

A Klondike Korner with Dan Davidson

ark Zuehlke was a writerin-residence at Berton House in 2003. At the time he had just finished several books on the history of the Canadian Forces actions in Italy during World War II and had brought along copious file boxes full of material for his work on the D-Day offensive on the other side of the continent.

He would return to Italy a few years later to chronicle the liberation of Sicily in Operation Husky: The Canadian Invasion of Sicily, July 10–August 7, 1943 (Douglas & McIntyre, 2008), but had no idea then that he would be returning in a more personal way in 2013 to participate in a 300-kilometre march in the footsteps taken by the soldiers of 1st Canadian Infantry Division.

This act of remembrance, called Operation Husky 2013, was the brainchild of Steve Gregory,

a Montreal businessman who was inspired partly by his visit to the Canadian War Cemetery in Agira, Sicily, in 2006, and partly by reading Zuehlke’s book.

Gregory had grandiose plans for a massive march up the route with 100 walkers, many ceremonies and a lot of official participation by various governments in both countries. In the end it was a somewhat smaller event than he had hoped, but he talked Zuehlke and his partner, Frances Backhouse (also a Berton House alumnus), into being part of the group of 10 that eventually committed to walk the route.

The long walk took place in July 2013, but Zuehlke says that he’d realized as early as the previous February, when he had begun a regime of daily long walks in preparation, that there would be a book. Through Blood and Sweat: A Remembrance Trek Across

Sicily’s World War II Battlegrounds (Douglas & McIntyre, 2015), is that story.

Coincidentally, Whitehorse filmmaker Max Fraser and his partner, Arlin McFarlin, were also along for the trip, shooting the footage that would become Bond of Strangers: The Operation Husky Story.

The two men premiered their productions in Whitehorse in a joint event at the Yukon Arts Centre on October 28. I spoke with Mark via Skype from Max’s house the day before.

“When Steve first approached me,” Zuehlke said, “it seemed like such an ambitious and complicated program being organized by one man – it was just Steve really.

My reaction was to wonder how one individual could make something this big happen.”

he thought were hair-brained schemes that came to nothing, so that was what he expected from this contact.

“But Steve just would not go away. He kept coming back. I became convinced that if anyone could pull it off it would probably be Steve Gregory. And that’s when

I sort of bought in on it.”

Aside from walking and participating in ceremonies in each town and village along the route, Zuehlke spent up to several hours daily keeping a journal and posting to a Facebook site that can still be seen online. Some of this material was useful in writing the book. In addition there were interviews and conversations with participants.

“It was such an intense experience,” he said, “that when they got back home people were thinking about it for months on end, putting their lives into perspective.”

Dan Davidson retired from 32 years of teaching in rural Yukon schools, but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

Be Aware of Risks of NOT Investing You’ve no doubt heard about the risks associated with investing.

This investment carries this type of risk, while that investment carries another one. And it is certainly true that all investments do involve some form of risk. But what about not investing? Isn’t there some risk associated with that, too?

In fact, by staying on the investment sidelines, or at least by avoiding long-term, growth-oriented investments, you may incur several risks. Here are some to consider: You might not keep up with inflation. If you put all your money under the proverbial “mattress,” or, more realistically, you keep it all in “cash” instruments and very short-term investments, you might think you are “playing it safe.” After all, you might reason, your principal is protected, so even if you don’t really make any money, you’re not losing it, either. But that’s not strictly true, because if your money is in investment vehicles that don’t even keep up with inflation, you can lose ground. In fact, even at a relatively mild three percent annual inflation rate, your purchasing power will decline by about half in just 25 years.

You might outlive your money. For a 65-year-old couple, there’s a 50 percent chance that one spouse will live past age 90, according to the Society of Actuaries. This statistic suggests that you may need your investments to help provide enough income to sustain you for two, or even three, decades in retirement.

You might not be able to maintain your financial independence.

Even if you don’t totally run out of money, you could end up scrimping by — or, even worse, you could become somewhat dependent on your grown children for financial assistance. For most people, this prospect is unacceptable. Consequently, you’ll want to make appropriate financial decisions to help maintain your financial independence.

You might not be able to retire on your terms. You would probably like to decide when you retire and how you’ll retire — that is, what sort of lifestyle you’ll pursue during retirement. But both these choices may be taken out of your hands if you haven’t invested enough to retire on your own terms.

You might not be able to leave the type of legacy you desire. Like most people, you would probably like to be able to leave something behind to your family and to those charitable organizations you support. You can help create this type of legacy through the appropriate legal vehicles — i.e., a will, a living trust and so on — but you’ll still need to fund these mechanisms somehow.

And that means you’ll need to draw on all your financial assets, including your investments.

Work with your financial advisor to determine the mixture of growth and income investments you need during your working years and as you move toward retirement to help you meet your retirement goals. However you do it, get into the habit of investing, and never lose it — because the risks of not investing are just too great.

The plan to bolster cultural tourism among the Yukon First Nations has been in the works for a while, but this week people from across the Yukon Territory are getting together for a conference in Whitehorse to discuss ways to strengthen this kind of tourism in the communities.

The conference, called Sharing Our Stories, takes place Nov. 18 to 20 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. It will explore the opportunities and challenges involved with developing cultural tourism in First Nations communities.

“The time is right for cultural experiences,” says Shirlee Frost, president of the First Nations Culture and Tourism Association, which is hosting the conference.

“Imagine if you could take some people on a river tour in your part of the world, where you were born and grew up, and teach them and show them what it’s like: the peace, the quiet, the beauty. It’ll touch their soul. And hopefully they can travel back to their part of the world and touch other souls.”

Currently, the communities offer a variety of opportunities to experience First Nation culture, from museums to heritage centres to festivals to art shows to wilderness experiences. However, Frost says there is a need for the communities to get organized and collaborate on bolstering cultural tourism. Currently there is no unified effort to promote the unique traditions of the different First Nations in the Yukon.

“Well, it’s non-existent,” she says. “If you look in the travel guides, it’s little snippets here and there. So we want to build on that. We also want to offer

The way Frost is looking at it, bolstering cultural tourism goes beyond showing visitors a good time. It goes beyond the opportunity for youth in the communities to showcase their beading-carving-painting-dancing skills. And it goes beyond channeling more dollars into the communities.

She sees a need for change and a need for more love and compassion in the world – and by sharing their stories and culture First Nations have an opportunity to have a positive impact.

“The reason I do what I do is to help create a world that is more loving and supportive of all of creation,” Frost says. “If we’re able to do that through our organization and by sharing our stories, – even just to plant these tiny seeds – it’s worth the effort.”

The conference has a focus on creating authentic cultural experience, and for Frost, there is a sacred responsibility at the heart of First Nation culture.

“We must try to do our ultimate responsibility in this life, in this world, as indigenous peoples: to create balance and harmony in all facets of our lives,” she says.

“It’s also to commune with nature, and live in appreciation and honour of that. The Creator gave us intelligence and voice to speak on behalf of those who can’t speak – including future generations.

“When you have this type of sacred responsibility, you have no choice but to be humbled in all of that – in our ability to create change.”

across the Yukon will be Lisa Dewhurst, business and marketing manager with the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre. She says the conference is a good idea.

“The biggest thing is that as cultural centres across the Yukon we are definitely growing along with the tourism sector… so getting together, networking and sharing what we’ve done with our own centre (in Teslin) is a great way to support one another,” says Dewhurst, who is Interior Salish from British Columbia. Her husband is Tlingit.

She views cultural centres in the communities as having a positive impact on the residents, in addition to being a focal point for visitors.

“Having a cultural centre in the communities nurtures art an culture in the community, instills pride and it’s a place where our artwork is displayed – so it provides more opportunities for citizens to participate,” Dewhurst says.

Through keynote speakers, panel discussions, cultural mapping and cultural programming, the conference will be an opportunity for the communities to collaborate and support each other in showcasing their unique traditions.

The second third welcomes a dried fruit taste, but the spice taste remains. The spice taste is very different compared to other cigars that are known for being on the spicy side.

I am not entirely sure how to describe it. The spice is predominant, but it is not overpowering, and the taste is enjoyable without getting tiring. I think this is because of the Brazilian wrapper. Due to the richness of the soil, this tobacco is grown differently than that of other regions and I believe this is where the mysterious and enjoyable spice taste comes from.

W

henever I travel to cities I seek out green space for the familiarity of trees and the relative quiet.

While Day 1 in Delhi was a lesson on how it’s true, everyone is trying to scam us, and the best artists make you feel like they’ve done you a favour, on Day 2 we gamely set out for a park near a bazaar in the old city to recalibrate. Thirty hours of flying plus transit in four airports had taken its toll.

We grabbed a tuk tuk from our hotel and headed for a park. We actually felt like we could breathe easier after passing the armed guard checking bags at the entry to the park.

School groups and families, couples and even the occasional tourist were meandering on the geometrically laid out pathways.

As two white women in conservative western dress we drew stares, as usual, but much less constant questioning than out on the street. We wandered for a while feeling more relaxed than we had since arriving – until we realised we were being followed.

We sat on a bench, and a young Indian couple loitered nearby.

We abruptly changed direction, and so did they.

Eventually we sat next to a military fellow to discuss our course of action, and when they paused nearby we snapped our only pic-

tures of the day, getting some good shots of them over my shoulder.

Eventually they made some phone calls and left. As we headed out of the park we found we had a new pair of shadows - two young men this time - and grabbed the first cab we saw. Shaken and a bit stirred we returned to a busy tourist enclave and the safety of a well populated restaurant.

Lets just say that even donning Indian dress we were quite happy to leave the city… Next missive from Darjeeling tea country!

Getting into the Game Yukoner Audrey McLaughlin was the first female MP to represent the Yukon Territory

A

udrey McLaughlin moved to the Yukon in the 1970’s with “no man, no job” because she thought it would be an interesting place to live. As she became the first woman to lead a major Canadian political party in 1989 and the first female federal party leader to represent a portion of the territories in 1987, she is not only a well-known member of the Yukon community, but an inspiring figure across Canada.

McLaughlin describes her career as a social worker during an “era of community development” as an important aspect of her professional inspiration.

Without historical examples of female politicians in Canada, McLaughlin was charting new ground.

“You’re not the model that the media is used to and the institution is used to,” she says.

However, she sees that politics is not easy for anyone.

“I’m sure I faced a lot of the same challenges male leaders faced.”

She is firm that no politician working in Canada has the right to complain about their career.

“It’s a privilege,” she says.

A further barrier to women’s voices in the political field is the claim that female politicians will only talk about women’s issues.

“Yes, [issues like] the environment, the economy – this same assumption is applied to First Nations leaders. It’s changed a little with time, but not dramatically,” she says.

McLaughlin paints a fairly bleak picture of how politics have changed in Canada and the Yukon since she began her career.

“The voice of women has been muted… by the government.

When I was in parliament, every year there was a day when… all political parties were grilled (by non-governmental women’s organisations in Canada),” she says.

“That also used to happen with unions.”

On the positive side, McLaughlin points to the increasing openness across the country around the issue of violence against women, the increased housing provided for people with disabilities in the Yukon, and the increased community support provided by organisations like the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre and Kaushee’s Place.

McLaughlin’s role models include Marion Dower and Nancy Riche as well as Flo Whyard, Ruth Massie and Jodi Gingell, but says that her biggest inspirations are the women she has met across Canada and internationally working both in and out of the spotlight.

“That’s who you’re working for,” she says.

Her advice for women and girls working for change today is, “Be self-confident… we [women] tend to under-value our experience.”

She says it’s important to seek out a good support network, since qualified women will still face an assumption of inadequacy in politics.

“Women are held to a much higher standard,” she says. “You do the best you can.

“That’s really what you can do.”

Liquor Meets Intellect

Round 4 of the Drunken Lectures take place on Nov. 19 at Baked Cafè

T

he Not So Secret Life of Michael Jordan. Obscure battles of the 1600s. Urban snow transport. Unusual topics, perhaps, but fascinating ones.

Now, there is an inquisitive event which caters to the curious crowd, called Drunken Lectures: The way high school should have been. At this series of events, the investigative folks of Whitehorse can discuss topics that strike their fancy.

The Drunken Lectures are intended to provide information about anything in a casual setting where you can relax with a beer (or whatever) and soak up new ideas. The event first surfaced last year with two events, and returned this year for a lecture night on Oct. 13. The next one takes place Nov. 19 at Baked Cafè.

The Drunken Lectures format is that eight speakers present a topic – any topic – to the crowd for eight minutes each. Their slogan is “8 not-quite sober speakers, 8 topics, 8 minutes each.”

Freeze Up: A First Timer’s Experience on the Other Side of the River

L

ike plenty of others around the territory, I’m no stranger to cabin life sans plumbing – my usual mode de vie involves a bucket under the sink and an outhouse in the backyard.

My Yukon story is also like so many others: I came for six months a few years ago and stayed. I love this place deeply, yet something internal was asking for more challenge, more of the pure, distilled Yukon-ness I’ve come to appreciate.

Thus, this September, the idea that I’d spend freeze up in West Dawson was born. It was the end of field season; I didn’t relish the idea of being trapped in an office, staring at a computer screen over the winter.

My other half, let’s call him The Frenchman, has lived over the river for eight years. I’ve been visiting for several months so when he invited me to stay I jumped at the prospect of adventure and isolation in the little offgrid community while it waits for the Yukon River to freeze, reconnecting it with Dawson.

I spent a couple of weeks preparing, inner control freak in heaven: I made spreadsheets, packed boxes of food, labeled things, repacked, and stressed about starving. Or scurvy. The

Frenchman took care of big things: gas, propane, water.

Due to the warm autumn, we debated my departure date from Whitehorse. The Yukon Government solved it by announcing the final day for the ferry to West Dawson would be Oct 28. That morning with possessions, provisions and my dog in the truck, I drove north.

The following day I walked down the hill from The Frenchman’s cabin to the river. The world was silent, fresh snow everywhere with more falling lightly.

When I arrived at the west bank the ferry was already out of the water, pushed into dock by two bulldozers.

I watched the comings and goings on the opposite side through my camera’s zoom lens. A small black dog, tail tightly curled, scurried around. Ravens swooped, landing now and then to bounce jauntily along the shore and peck at unseen things. Someone walked with a stroller. A transport truck slowly hauled away three shipping containers. Ferry staff meandered between an orange pickup and the boat, high-vis vests sharp against the snow.

I marveled at how busy we humans make ourselves with the things we’ve engineered.

It seemed like I was watching a play unfold from a far-off gallery.

A quarter mile of cold, gunmetalgrey river lay between me and the action, flowing along sinuously, silently. I heard only the occasional shout, the beeping of a reversing vehicle, the echoing knock of a remote hammer. Even with these few sounds I still felt distant, as though looking through the wrong end of a telescope.

Then I realised that’s what freeze up is about: being apart from the crowd, watching the world go by, and finding my place in it.

I took my leave, whistled to the dog and walked back up the hill, satisfied with my first lesson from freeze up.

A Little Off the Top with Ken Bolton

I

t took a king, a pope and a former prime minister to make me rethink my scepticism about extrasensory perception.

Let me set the scene.

August 16, 1977 was a stinking hot Tuesday in southern British Columbia. I was on Highway 3, mid-way between Hope and Princeton, when CBC Radio announced that the King, Elvis Presley, was dead.

A year later, on the same stretch of road, CBC informed me about the death of Pope Paul VI. For reasons I’ll never know, I turned to my then-wife and blurted out, “There’s going to be another one this time next year. A Canadian.”

“Who?” she asked.

Two-second pause and I replied, “John Diefenbaker.”

The subject didn’t arise again until five months later, when the Current Affairs unit at CBC Calgary was looking at the major stories we anticipated in 1979. The biggest was a federal election, which Pierre Trudeau had to call before July 8.

The conversation quickly turned to the 83-year-old Diefenbaker, Canada’s 13th prime minister, who had signalled his intention to run again, but was in poor health.

Speculation was rife that the man they called “Dief the Chief” wouldn’t actually run, or would die before the campaign began.

As if from another dimension, I heard my voice declare flatly, “He’ll run again, and he’ll win.

He’s not going to die. Not until August 14.”

A conversation-stopper, to say the least.

Once again, I had no clue where the idea had come from. Once again, I forgot about it for several months. Meanwhile, Diefenbaker recovered and was elected to the House of Commons for a 13th time that May. On Monday, August 13 (there’s that number again), I was conducting the regular story meeting for staff of all three local programs to discuss their plans for the week.

John Diefenbaker wrote two words in Tuesday’s column on the whiteboard: Diefenbaker Dies.

For the third time, the premonition came straight out of the blue.

An hour later, I got a call from a producer at As It Happens, complaining that things were pretty quiet and asking if there was anything worth chasing in our part of the country.

“Don’t worry, George,” I told him. “Diefenbaker’s going to die tomorrow. You’ll have lots of stories.”

As it happened, the prairie legend didn’t die on Tuesday, and my staff ribbed me mercilessly.

When he didn’t die on Wednesday, either, the subject quickly disappeared from my radar.

On Thursday, August 16, I slipped into the producer’s chair

at exactly 6 a.m., just as John Cranston intoned the words, “Here is the CBC News. John Diefenbaker is dead.”

In the chilling moment it took to comprehend what I was hearing, Cranston looked straight at me and nodded grimly, as if to say it was all my fault.

I had never believed in precognition, or any other paranormal phenomena. I certainly

never claimed any psychic powers. Didn’t want them, don’t want them, don’t believe I have them.

But the King, the Pope and the Chief certainly made me think about it.

Now, the prequel...

I had encountered John George Diefenbaker in person a few times over the years, beginning in 1961, when he spoke at our high school about his government’s Bill of Rights.

In the early 1970s, whenever I attended Question Period in the House of Commons, like most people in the public gallery, I secretly hoped the old warrior from Prince Albert would be on deck that day.

If he was, everyone would lean forward, eagerly anticipating one of his trademark jowl-shaking, finger-wagging broadsides at some hapless cabinet minister.

The last time I met Diefenbaker was in early summer, 1974, when I interviewed him for CBC-TV on the lawn of the Charlottetown Hotel in PEI. To be honest, I’d never cared much for the man, or his politics, and wasn’t thrilled about the assignment. But for some reason, once the camera was rolling, he and I locked eyes, got down and dirty, and had a blast for the next half hour.

At the end of our conversation, he leaned in, wagged his finger at me and uttered a sentence I will never forget.

“You have something nobody else has.”

To this day, I have no idea what he meant. Was it a tidbit of information he’d never shared before?

A unique gift as an interviewer?

The world’s worst case of halitosis?

Or... might he have meant the ability to foresee his death a full year (plus two days) before it actually happened?

I’m not certain I want to know the answer.

Guns for the New Hunter You shouldn’t have to be an expert hunter to have a gun that fits you properly

raditionally rifles and shotguns were only made in one size to fit an average sized adult and were always too big for women and young people. Some new hunters adapted to the oversize guns, but many became disillusioned due to recoil, poor balance and difficulty in lining up the sights.

Also, buying a left-handed gun has usually added 20 to 30 per cent to the price. This often caused lefties to use a right handed gun, which never fits very well, often causing an unpleasant – even painful – experience.

Recently firearms manufacturers did a major turn-around, producing a variety of long-guns in smaller sizes to meet the demand from women and youth hunters.

They have also been able to bring the price down to the point where a reasonable quality, bolt-action rifle equipped with a scope can be purchased for between $300 and $500. These rifles are chambered in modern hunting cartridges suitable for varmints, small game and big game. These include .223s, 7mm-08, .270 Win.,308 Win, 30.06 and others.

The type of hunting and ability to deal with recoil – the kick as the gun goes off – are among the deciding factors of which cartridge to choose, but the 7mm-08 is good choice for Yukon hunting with the variety of ammunition locally available. These rifles come in right or left handed actions for about the same price.

Shotguns are also produced in

smaller dimensions to meet the same market needs as the rifles.

They are available in any of the standard shotgun bore sizes, but 10 or 12 gauge are tough on smaller people due to their shoulder punishing recoil. Twenty gauges are available, which are chambered to use either 3” or less punishing 2 ¾” shells and will do as well in the field as a 12 gauge with practice. There are also 28 gauge and .410 bore which are smaller yet with less recoil.

Whether rifle or shotgun, these firearms are designed for people of smaller stature, with shorter height and reach. Similar to the full sized guns, these guns are balanced well because they aren’t just cut down models, they are made for smaller people having

shorter barrels at one end and shorter stocks on the other.

It is amazing how much better anyone can learn to shoot with a gun that fits. Their cheek fits the cheek-piece, their eye is the correct distance from the scope, the trigger is touched without reaching and the other (support) hand securely grasps the forend.

Recoil has spoiled the day for many novice shooters. Recoil is much more manageable with a gun that fits well because it can be held and supported properly.

These guns will all come with a recoil pad, usually rubber, to soften the blow and these are easily replaced with a better pad if necessary.

A pad can be placed against the shooting shoulder for target prac-

tice or sighting-in. This softens the recoil and helps to prevent the new shooter from developing a flinch causing the target to be missed.

Locally, Hougen’s Sportslodge on Main Street in Whitehorse has a number of these rifles and shotguns on the rack with prices similar to prices in the south.
