Peace of mind can strike at odd times, for odd reasons.

ast night I spent a few hours organizing the entries for What’s Up Yukon’s Food to Fly For contest in which a lucky winner will be sent to Frankfurt courtesy of Condor Air. Each contestant was asked to write a short essay on an aspect of European cuisine that is worth hopping the Atlantic to experience. The deadline was April 30 and we received more submissions in the three days leading up to the deadline than we did in the previous three months.

Human nature, I suppose.

When the dust settled, we had collected approximately 60 articles and the job of consolidating and accounting for all of them fell on me.

There were two distinct aspects of this operation.

First, I had to transfer all the contest entries from my email inbox to a folder we had created in a computer program called Dropbox. To do this I had to locate each relevant email, open it, download the attachment containing the

Food to Fly For essay, rename the document according to our agreed-upon coding system and then save that document to the above-mentioned Dropbox Folder.

Then I had to gather the name of the contest entrant, the title of his story, his email address and phone number (if one was provided) and plug all this information into a spreadsheet.

Then I did it all over again for the next person. And again after that — ad nauseum.

There is nothing difficult about any of the computer procedures listed above and the whole thing amounted to little more than a run-of-the-mill data entry task.

Still, I did not relish the perceived monotony of the job and procrastinated fervently (an oxymoron?) before finally settling down to brass tacks.

What I didn’t anticipate was the sense of calm that I would derive from the ever-repeating operation.

True, the first half-dozen cycles were annoying. I had yet to

nail down my proper cadence or establish a consistent order for all the tiny steps that contributed to the larger task at hand.

But soon enough I was starting to feel it; a rhythm that pulsed through my finger tips into my keyboard. The repetitive nature of the operations became trancelike. I grooved on it.

Would I sound like an idiot to say I was dancing with data? Most likely — so I won’t.

But I do have a few things to say.

Number one: peace of mind can strike at odd times, for odd reasons. Go with it.

Number two: the line between sheer boredom and meditative awareness might be fuzzier than we think.

And so it came to pass that on a Wednesday night like many others I finished cataloging all of our Food to Fly For entries and went to bed with a calm disposition and a mysterious feeling of connectedness.

Weird.

Gearing up to Hammer the Trails

Contagious Mountain Bike Club seeking guides for group rides

f you ride a mountain bike from the 1990s with your kickaround shoes on and some jeans, have no fear, you are welcome at the Contagious Mountain Bike Club (CMBC).

Kristina Gardner, treasurer of the club, says everyone is welcome, from beginners to those that go hard and are dialed into the scene.

“There are people who match all the components of their outfits with all the components of their

bikes,” she says. “But then there are people who are just dirt bags (note: she means this endearingly) and just have whatever and want to ride.”

CMBC is gearing up for the snow-less season of cycling and is inviting folks to join their group rides or consider volunteering as guides.

On Tuesday nights there are two options: join the men and women on a group ride, or compete in the Toonie Races.

Riders can choose to go with the beginner group or the intermediate/advanced group.

“Don’t be scared to come, that’s my key message,” Gardner says. “It will be fun. And there are lots of opportunities to stop and catch your breath and chat.”

hills. If you’re not at that stage, take their Introduction to Mountain Biking course, which costs $20 for four Sundays of skill training.

Everyone was a rookie at some point, as they old saying goes, and Gardner wants to find riders who have learned the trails and have advanced to the point that they ride with their own group of friends.

“These are the kind of people that it would be awesome if they would pay it forward and come and lead,” she says.

Gardner says guides aren’t the fastest and they don’t have the best gear. They just have to have a sense of the trails and the confidence to keep track of a horde. She knows; she’s done it.

“I like to help the community by coordinating rides,” she says. “I like to show people the trails that I love. And I like to help show people — who might be too scared to go into the trails by themselves — how awesome it is.”

The first Dirt Girls ride of the season is on May 16; riders will meet at 7 p.m. at the Magnusson parking lot on Grey Mountain (accessed through Riverdale).

Dogs are welcome on the rides, so long as they are under control.

An annual membership with the Contagious Mountain Bike Club is $15 plus $35 for insurance to ride with them. The four-week Introduction to Mountain Biking Course began on May 6. Contact the club about options for taking the course.

T

he events of the day have left me a bit nostalgic for the classroom. I spent about half the morning at the Robert Service School in Dawson City participating in an event titled “Acknowledging the Past. Celebrating the Present. Moving Forward in Unity.�

Held in the gymnasium, it was a celebration of the tremendous progress that has been made in adding First Nations content to the school’s curriculum.

While all this began about 15 years ago, with the implementation of Hän language classes and instruction in the First Nations’ traditions, it was largely aimed at the primary and elementary classes because there wasn’t a wealth of material, nor was there a large cadre of instructors — the

whole process had to begin with baby steps.

There were several years at the school when First Hunt and First Fish camps became annual events, but they didn’t generally reach to the senior grades, where I was teaching English.

It’s during the last five years, since I retired from the classroom, that there’s been a real explosion of cultural references. I’ve been observing it from the sidelines because I do the layout and design of the school’s newsletter, The Sourdough.

These days the newsletter includes pictures and articles about field trips to the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre on Front Street for Native themed video productions, doll making, beading, Hip-Hop Han Language, and other assorted

activities. All classes participate.

Students are taking what’s called gathering walks around the town’s trails to locate various flowers and herbs. They’re off to Moosehide over the river while learning to ski and snowshoe, and

spending time at Tombstone Territorial Park as well as the camp called R22 or ChʟÍhòląy (Land of Plenty).

Elementary classes are learning jigging and the use of the drum.

traditional ways and show the junior and senior high students how to butcher meat and make bannock.

Much of this was not possible when I started out in the Yukon in the mid-1970s. In some communities there was a great disturbance in the force (to put it lightly) when early attempts were made to bring First Nations activities into the schools.

So it was wonderful to see a ceremony marking the installation of the Federal Government’s Apology for the wrongs of the residential school era, combined with a school-produced video celebrating all its Native activities, and the installation of the Tr’ondÍk HwÍch’in (TH) flag along with the other flags and banners in the building.

The morning event concluded with the singing of the “Flag Song� by the TH Singers and Drummers, and then continued with a feast at the TH Community Hall and a demonstration of jigging by the kids.

A celebration, indeed. Â After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

You say Potato and I say Tomato

The trials and tribulations, mostly trials, of finding a mate in the Yukon

pring has come late to the Yukon, but that plaintive query that heralds the arrival of a new season still rings out loud and clear: “Where in God’s name are all the single men?”

Gone are the days of the old adage “The odds are good, but the goods are odd,” where a pioneering single lady had any number of hard living men to choose from.

The balance has shifted. Yukon went from Ladies’ Night to BYOB — bring your own boyfriend — otherwise, you might just join the legions of intelligent, attractive, successful, and generally awesome single women in Yukon, many of whom are in my social circle.

In truth, there’s no actual shortage. According the Bureau of Statistics, there are over 600 more men than women in the territory.

Leaving aside factors such as age distribution, homosexuality, and double-dipping (you know who you are), there’s roughly an equal number of cowboys and cowgirls.

So what’s the real problem?

In my first foray into investigative journalism, I consulted the seemingly overrepresented cohort of single women about why it’s so darn hard to find love in the Yukon.

There’s the “size” issue, compounded by the “access” issue.

But I’m not talking about winter underwear, rather the population of Yukon — small and remote.

One informant, H, points out that “Dating in Whitehorse feels like being in high school. You can know a person’s entire relationship history before you even meet them.” She adds, “It’s like being in an STD ad: you’re not just dating the person, you’re dating everyone else they’ve ever dated.”

It’s the old problem of living in a small pond, but unlike small ponds in southern Canada, there are no other little ponds within easy swimming distance. Ponds where you could, say, go to a multiplex cinema on a date and not run into half your book club seated in the row behind you.

Another informant, B, who is a 30-year old professional, was amazed to find herself making plans in Toronto with a friend of a friend who, in her words, “was perfectly nice and had not slept with a single one of my friends.”

Knowing someone’s relationship history may require carefully navigating a close network of exes, children, and resentments ranging from acrimony to alimony.

As P says, “I have to think hard before I decide to date my co-worker’s ex-boyfriend.

We have to be very careful with each other and the situation.”

This brings me to a second factor in the Great Bachelor Famine. Let me first express my utmost respect for all the single and sometimes single men I know in the Yukon — what I’m about to say is going to hurt me more than it’s going to hurt you: there is perceived to be an issue of quality among Whitehorse men.

As Informant L observes, “The odds are not so good, and the goods are still odd.”

We all like to think that the Yukon attracts people that are hardy and resourceful – who dance to the beat of their own drum.

For some men, that drum beats a little louder than need be in a conventional relationship. Call it

what you want: individuality, independence, hoarding.

B calls it too much choice.

“Lots of men have it easy up here, and I think it can make them reluctant to commit,” she says. “They know that if something gets hard, they can just move on to the next casual thing.”

In other words, yes, the goods are odd, but they’re still getting a ride in the shopping basket of love.

Which brings me to a third, related point. Reproduction.

I am not going near any evolutionary theories about why men and women behave the way they do. All I want to say is that if men are root vegetables and women are tomatoes.

Root vegetables stay fresh for ages. I once had a sweet potato in my fridge for six months.

Tomatoes, on the other hand, well, there comes a time in every tomato’s life when they have to stop rip-

ening on the counter and move either into the salad bowl or into the spaghetti sauce.

Neither is better or worse, but if you’re the kind of tomato who wants to be a part of a salad, you have to find the right lettuce and dressing – before you turn into a tasty sauce.

Unfortunately many tomatoes in the Yukon are the independent type. They get busy building careers, running dog teams, and paddling through pristine watersheds. Before they know it, the biological clock is ticking and into the sauce they go.

All this is to say that things can be rather pressing for women when they’re looking for love.

There might be no supply issue, no quality issue, just poor timing.

So, what’s a gal to do if she’s given it an honest shot and still hasn’t struck gold?

According to P, “Move out or move on!”

There are certainly good reasons to leave any place, but I’m guessing that some of the women who leave here think that if they stay, they just aren’t going to find a good carrot and make a nice salad.

If you do stay, P says, “You just have to get over the fact that you might not meet someone. You have to psychologically move on and focus on other things that are important to you.”

But do you ever give up hope of finding love? According to E, no.

“It doesn’t mean you don’t love your life and your community, because otherwise why would you live here, but you still hope that someday you’ll find someone.”

t the end of a refreshing ski or a meandering hike through alpine meadows, Haines Junctioners like to kick back and enjoy life in this beautiful little town.

Spoiled for choice when it comes to world class adventure options in our backyard, we have much to offer the outdoor enthusiast.

However, Junction Arts and Music (JAM) also has something to offer indoor enthusiasts. We have a growing fan base for the film events JAM has been bringing us.

Everything ranging from Dawson City International Short Film Festival screenings to Northern Film Nights during the summer, our Convention Centre is delivering the goods to film buffs.

This time around, JAM and the St. Elias Cross-country Ski Club are collaborating to present the com-

munity’s first-ever mountain film festival with screenings from the best of the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) on May 16. So before you strap on another crampon or lock another carabineer, have a look at what this film festival has to offer.

Films such as Living Tiny (Skiing/USA) and Silbergeier (Rockclimbing/France) are part of the line-up.

Alan Formanek, founder and director of the VIMFF, says the film Silbergeier captures a recordsetting climb by a woman.

“Swiss climber Nina Caprez climbs a route called Silbergeier, in Ratikon, Switzerland,” Formanek says. “This route is rated 8b+ in the French scale, and it is the hardest long – multi-pitch – route climbed by a woman.”

The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival takes place on Thursday May 16 at the St. Elias Convention Centre in the Grand Hall, and doors open at 6:30 p.m.

A

h the pretzel. I am a strong German piece of “bread” in the eyes of some, yet I am so much more. To many of you in North America I come in the form of a bag of chips, dried out and crunchy — something that is offered on plane rides.

To me the pretzel is the German staple to beer. This seemingly simple food is one of my favorite foods and something that I have tried to locate many a time in Canada.

This accidental food, created from dropping dough into chemicals can be found throughout Germany, offered plain, with butter or cheese or maybe with seeds on it. It is the perfect snack to carry around or perfect outer layer of a simple sandwich.

Last year I ended up at Oktoberfest with a group of friends. Here the pretzel (bretzel in German) is circulated, probably as a way to absorb the mass amounts of pilsner that are being consumed. I found this to be the one thing that I craved over anything else. The soft fluffy center, with the crispy edges are in perfect harmony with the large salt pieces fastened to the dark outside of this beautiful bread. The twisted shape lends for pure entertainment (even more so after a few beer). I would travel to Germany just for the pure simple pleasure of stuffing my face again with the salty treat!

in my family likes it, I do not.

If I went to Germany I probably wouldn’t just be there for a short time because, as I mentioned before, my parents are from Germany and my Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and my Great-Grandma all still live in Germany. Since they aren’t exactly rich they can’t fly from Germany to the Yukon all the time and I don’t get to see them like most kids are able to

y parents were both born in Germany. They got married there and moved to the Yukon. That’s where they got me and my siblings. I have been to Germany four times and twice when I was not even born yet. The last time I went to Germany was three years ago when I was almost nine. I made friends with another girl there and, since I am home-schooled, I decided it would be fun if I went to school with her for a day and, with my parent’s permission, I did. The lunch that my grandma packed for me was Laugenweckle. You could call it a pretzel roll in English. I loved the crisp, salty outside and the soft, fresh inside. It was the best bread I had ever eaten (and still is to this day)! I tried finding Laugenweckle in the Yukon and I DID find some pretty good breads and recipes but they are all not the same.

There is one food I would cancel the entire flight for if I knew I had to eat it: cooked white asparagus. I like vegetables, more cooked than raw, but I do like them, so when I saw white asparagus I thought it was just another vegetable that I had not tried yet (and I had this at my grandma’s the first time, too). Turns out that I do NOT like it. It tastes like whipping cream without flavour (when it is cooked anyway). Plain and simple: Although everybody

see their relatives. But I do get to see some of them in the summer each year when they come to visit (except for my great grandma since she is too old to travel). Their suitcases often contain yummy treasures. My siblings like the chocolate and gummy bears but I like the Laugenweckle that they sometimes bring although they are rather stale after the long flight. Next time I go to Germany I will definitely have “The Food I Flew For!” Here is my mother’s version of my favourite for you to try at home: Emma Kaiser is an 11 year writer and food critic.

Laugenweckle or Brezeln (soft Pretzels) Enough for 2 meals for my family of 8, so you might want to half this Recipe.

Ingredients: 14-14 1/2c freshly milled whole spelt flour 2T yeast 4c warm water

1/4c bear or pork lard or coconut oil 1T sea salt 4c water + 1T baking soda

How to: Mix together 8c flour, water and yeast to batter like consistency. Cover and let rise for 15min. Add remaining flour, fat and salt and knead very well, by machine or hand until gluten is developed nicely and dough is smooth and not sticky. Form into buns, knots, pretzels or braids. Bring water and baking soda to boiling and boil formed dough in lye solution for 1 minute, making sure to turn or dunk dough for maximum exposure. Remove onto greased cookie sheets and sprinkle with coarse salt and/or sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds or a nice sharp cheese (traditionally Emmentaler, but an old cheddar will do also). Traditionally the buns Emma loves get slit slightly crosswise before sprinkling with a sharp serrated knife. Bake in preheated oven at 220F for 20-25 min. Eat fresh! Note: if you make these with white flour they will be much more traditional, but not as good for you!

Karina Lapointe says if your meal looks great, you’ll take more time to savour and appreciate it.

f your taste buds long for something new and your eyes are looking for something as pretty as it is tasty, you need to find Karina Lapointe.

This local chef graduated from two different professional culinary schools in Québec but her training started long before then.

“I’ve always been crazy about cooking,” says Lapointe. “I started making pies in the sandpit at age three. By the time I hit elementary school, I was in charge of meals for my younger siblings.”

She has since worked in a variety of restaurants, cafés, hotels and resorts in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Here in the Yukon, Lapointe has cooked at the four star Inn on the Lake where she was the chef for several years and at the Yukon Outfitters Association annual Wild Game Banquet.

Last year, Lapointe decided to set aside the restaurant and hotel industry. She wanted to explore different ways of cooking and develop new culinary experiences for Yukoners.

“When I studied cuisine, I thought true gastronomy only existed in fancy and expensive restaurants and hotels,” says Lapointe.

“Once I worked in their kitchens, I realised there is no room for innovation or creation.”

Lapointe is offering an opportunity to experience her edible art this month. On Saturday, May 18 she is hosting a seven course gourmet dinner at the Centre de la francophonie. The event, called Souper Gourmand, features local bison and halibut, and sorbet made with spruce tips foraged locally. This

fine dining experience is an artful preparation of northern ingredients prepared in a French-fusion style.

Though trained in French cuisine, she likes to play with colours and flavours. Lapointe loves experimenting and isn’t afraid to mix bacon with chocolate.

“Making food that is aesthetically pleasing is really important to me,” she says. “If your meal looks great, you’ll take more time to savour and appreciate it, and that’s what food is all about.”

This summer, you can visit her at Shipyards Market where she’ll have a stand with crepes and artwork.

In addition, Lapointe is developing a dining experience that is an alternative to going to a restaurant: a meal prepared in the comfort of your own home.

The Gourmet Dinner takes place on May 18 at 6 p.m. at the Centre de la francophonie.

Want to See a Great Film? Try Tootsie

Film makes us re-think sexual stereotypes and have a laugh

I

n an age when films have become franchises, it’s refreshing to harken back to some of the dramas of the ‘70s and ‘80s that featured imaginative plots and absorbing characterizations.

One such film that had a groundbreaking influence on the contemporary culture of its time was Tootsie, starring Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange and Bill Murray.

Released by Columbia Studios in December of 1982, Tootsie garnered $177- million at the North American box office, on an original $20-million budget, eclipsing Columbia’s 1977 Close Encounters of The Third Kind, to become the studio’s most successful film ever to that point.

Dustin Hoffman plays Michael Dorsey, an unemployed New York actor. He’s headstrong and a perfectionist, and his agent, played by the film’s director Sidney Pollack, claims that no studio in New York or Los Angeles will touch Michael, because of his uncooperative nature.

When Michael’s friend-who’sa-girl Sandy (played by Terry Garr) auditions for a role as a middleaged hospital administrator in a daytime soap opera, Michael decides out of desperation to seek out the part for himself.

After an extensive makeup and wardrobe session, a flowing brown wig and the adoption of a southern accent, Michael’s masquerade is complete. Relying on sheer chutzpah, he bulls his way through an audition, and ends up successful.

The very qualities that had rendered him untouchable in the eyes of his agent and studio executives now work in his favour.

He improvises lines that actually improve on the formulaic scripts, and refuses to take any guff from anyone.

Before long, his work has become noticed, and he becomes the overnight star of the series.

But success brings its own problems. Michael, now known professionally as Dorothy Michaels, falls in love with his on-set co-star Julie Nichols, played by Jessica Lange.

Life imitates art as soap operatype complications develop. Julie herself is in an affair with the show’s director, an unabashed blowhard and womanizer. Michael/Dorothy becomes the object of Julie’s widower father’s affections, after the three of them – father, Julie and Michael/ Dorothy – all spend a weekend together at the father’s country retreat.

It’s all predictable yet refreshing, in the ‘40s screwball tradition. Tootsie captured the public imagination in 1982, and went on to garner 10 Academy Award nominations, netting a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Jessica Lange and effectively launching her career. Bill Murray’s work, although uncredited, is also significant, propelling his burgeoning comic career forward.

Tootsie was really the first American film to espouse a feminist viewpoint and make a big splash at the box office while doing it. Popular with critics as well as the public, it challenged average Americans to rethink sexual roles and stereotypes in a way that they’d never been asked to before, and to have a good laugh in the process.

The film helped consolidate Hoffman’s career, and give testament to his versatility and determination. The adoption of the Dorothy persona necessitated three-hour makeup sessions and cumbersome latex breast boosters.

as the ultimate tribute to Tootsie’s effectiveness, 10 days before the film’s premiere, Hoffman was made an honorary member of the New York Branch of Women In Film.

Hopeless Romantic is a Love Letter to the Yukon

Comedian/clown/singer Claire Ness releases first CD

“W

hen the call of the Yukon is calling me home...”

Claire Ness has tried living outside, moving to Toronto and Montreal, but soon came to her senses and returned home — with some great genre-defying songs. She’s recently released those songs on Hopeless Romantic, her first album.

Ness began recording in August 2011.

“It was like your first born child,” she says. “It always hurts the most, it takes the longest, and is late. And gets big.”

She recorded at Lone Star Studio, her name for Kevin Barr’s studio at Crag Lake.

“Tim Jeffery was recording engineer,” she says. “He’s been coming up for years playing with all kinds of people. He does slide, peddle steel, lapsteel, dobro. He was amazing, his production ideas were really fun, and he played a lot on it too.

“I took over after he went back to Alberta. I just couldn’t handle not being around the mixing process. So then I handed it over to Bob Hamilton, and he mixed it and mastered it.”

Backing Ness and Jeffery are Rob Bergman on bass, Lonnie Powell on drums, Grant Simpson on piano, Daniel Timmermans on trumpet and Steve Slade on harmonica. Together they create a style of music that’s a fusion of folk, country, jazz and cabaret.

“A lot of my influences come from Cole Porter and musical theatre and jazz,” Ness says. “Pearl Bailey and Etta James, blues and folk. I call it kind of folk jazz.”

It’s the sort of music that fans of Norah Jones would be familiar with.

Added to that is a half-spoken, theatrical, expressive vocal that draws the listener in.

The songs themselves are mostly romantic, reflecting Ness’ love of, and longing for, the Yukon, its history, culture, colour and drinking habits.

The songs “Yukon Gold,” “Hopeless Romantic,” “Stampedes of Water” and “We Drink”

are directly inspired by her home.

Other songs like “The Bridge” and “Rushing to Red Lights” comment on life in larger cities, detached from nature and caught up in a seemingly faster pace of life.

“We Drink” is her meditation on what makes Yukoners distinct from the rest of Canada. It also features some truly fun lyrics, nodding to her background as a clown and comedian.

We drink when it is freezing/ We drink when it’s just cold/We drink when anyone we know/ Turns one more half day old.

Ness has also written a couple of songs in French. In particular, “La Pitoune” stands out, which, according to my research, is either a slang term for a beautiful woman or a flume ride at a Montreal amusement park. Even someone not fluent in French can appreciate how Ness plays with the language.

That song also features a nice play between Slade’s harmonica and Timmermans’ trumpet, handing the solos back and forth.

Ness has already started her next album, recording new songs live with an all-star cast at her CD release party. That’s the perfect recording environment for Ness, simultaneously bringing out the theatricality and intimacy of her vocal and lyrics, playing against the audience as any good comedian/clown/singer should.

In a Reggae Groove

West coast multi-instrumentalist Shane Philip plays Whitehorse, Haines Junction

S

ince its successful debut concert by roots reggae veteran Clinton Fearon on March 30, the Yukon Reggae Council has been hard at work to bring more reggae and world music artists to the territory. We are pleased to present Vancouver Island-based Shane Philip, an award-winning multiinstrumentalist, singer-songwriter and didgeridoo extraordinaire, on May 17 in Whitehorse and an allages show on May 18 in Haines Junction.

The influence of reggae is present in Philip’s music and energy. He established his link to the genre over the years by gracing the lineup of Victoria SkaFest and opening for the likes of reggae legends The Wailers and Toots and the Maytals.

“I’ve listened to reggae all my life,” Philip says. “It’s really easy for me to connect to. Most of my songs are inspired by human nature and mother earth, it’s actually challenging sometimes to not fall into a reggae groove. I seem to have a reggae version of every song I do these days and that has been coming out more and more during live performances.”

Since 2005 he has been tirelessly touring songs that cross genres from folk, blues and reggae to tribal rhythms and dance music. But he has never made it up to Yukon, so it was an easy decision.

“I see Yukon as full of people who love life, a bit eccentric in a good way,” he says. “The place really appeals to me so I jumped

He is just one person, but his sound is like that of a full band.

Philip, however, does not usually describe himself as a one-man band.

“The one-man band thing sounds like a kind of novelty act, when I see myself as a more of a conventional singer-songwriter,” he says. “I just happen to use every limb.”

This talent was developed by growing up in rural Ontario where other musicians were just too far away.

“When I wanted to create a certain sound with more instru-

ments I did it myself,” Philip says.

Philip recently won Best Live Act at the Vancouver Island Music Awards. He has released four studio albums and is currently working on a fifth. He consistently charts on community radio stations across Canada and his songs are featured regularly on CBC radio.

Philip’s shows will be complimented by DJ music keep the dance floor hopping before, between and after his sets. That job falls on me, as Rebel Selector.

Philip and I go back several years collaborating on shows together, and as Rebel Selector I like to play a mix of reggae, dancehall, and Latin American music.

He performs on May 18th at the St. Elias Convention Centre in Haines Junction. Tickets are for sale at the door, but it’s free for kids 12 and under. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.

New Source of Yukon Art North End Gallery opens second space in Whitehorse

welve local artists are now making their home at the corner of First and Main, thanks to the North End Gallery.

There is now a second North End Gallery in Whitehorse, and the new gallery is providing wall space to the original work of some of Yukon’s beloved artists.

Donna Reimchen has been the owner of the North End Gallery — which focuses on Canadian pottery, prints, and gifts — for the past two years. In that time, she came to recognize the special environment that original works of art need.

“Original work needs somewhere to breathe,” she says. “The other store is great for selling prints, but for original artwork it’s always a struggle to give it the space it deserves.”

When Angellina’s Toy Boutique vacated its space in Horwood’s Mall for a larger storefront, she seized the opportunity.

Yukon Gallery, and the tourist high season imminent, it seems an ideal time for such a venture.

The gallery is currently representing the work of artists who were chosen by an independent jury based not only on the quality of their work, but also on their professional record and ability to produce work consistently. The gallery features a show of the artists’ work to launch the opening of the space, which will run until the end of May. Reimchen has no plan to expand the groupof-twelve for the time being in order to allow artists to do solo shows throughout the year, as well as to ensure artists are adequately exhibited.

“I want to be able to show a de-

cent representation of everyone’s work, not just one or two pieces,” Reimchen explains.

In addition, Reimchen aims to provide a welcoming space for potential art buyers.

“We want it to be the kind of place that person can feel free to sit for 20 or 30 minutes enjoying the work, maybe falling in love The new gallery space for with one of the pieces,” she says.

Parenteau has had great commercial success, but the new gallery offers an opportunity to create more original work.

Parenteau says. “Prints are great, but many people do feel more comfortable with the original.”

As well, the gallery provides her motivation to finish works, which can be a protracted and solitary activity.

“I do spend a lot of time on my painting, sometimes if I had a reason to get them out faster, I would do that,” she says. “It’s very welcome. Art is an obsessive thing.”

Parenteau has just opened a show in the Stephan Gallery in Anchorage and as an artist attracting national and international attention she is proud to be part of the Whitehorse art community.

“There’s a lot of change happening in Whitehorse these days,” she says. “It seems like it’s getting a shot in the arm. It’s nice to be part of that. Donna has a vision; she’s dynamic and community minded. I’m happy to hitch my wagon to her star.”

Quick and Easy Dinner Ideas

Glory Dressing Cook too much, freeze the excess and then it’s ready for you when you need a healthy meal fast.

I

realize I have only included a hand full of recipes in my What’s Up articles so far. With that in mind, here are some suggestions for you that are quick, nutritious and wholesome.

Meals you can plan ahead of time Prepare shish-kabobs ahead of time and throw them on the barbeque at your convenience. You can make a lemon-style barbeque sauce with sautéed garlic, mustard powder, pepper, sea salt and applesauce to roll the kabobs in after they are cooked. If desired, chop potatoes, add some butter and spices in tin foil and throw them on the barbeque 15 minutes or so ahead of the shish-kabobs.

Cook extra portions of roast for dinner one night and serve them again with homemade gravy on multigrain toast and a side salad.

Prepare dinner the night be-

fore by chopping vegetables, marinating meat, soaking beans, chopping and spicing potatoes for baking. This process will save you time the next day when you only have to turn on the oven to prepare dinner.

A crock-pot can become your new best friend. There are a lot of recipe books and resources that include healthy, prepare-in-themorning-and-leave-all-day recipes, including casseroles, hearty soups and stews.

Cook extra on the weekends and freeze meals like spaghetti and meat sauce, homemade burger patties, and stew.

Whipping something together on the fly Make a delicious salmon dip for wraps, bread or crackers by using canned salmon with mashed avocado, yogurt, pepper, chopped onions and olives.

Mix a salad with leftover rice, canned beans (drained), diced tomato, cilantro, corn, lemon and olive oil dressing with fresh ground pepper.

Boil some eggs and serve with cashews, leftover rice and tamari or soy sauce.

Make fresh veggies and spicy hummus wraps. Hummus can be pre-made and frozen, canned, or bought pre-made in the store, and serve with olives and avocados, greens, onions, sprouts, etc.

Lightly sauté veggies and garlic (can be sliced the night before) and serve with brown rice or kamut pasta and a butter sauce with diced tomatoes. Add some chili peppers or wild meat sausage, if desired.

Use leftover chicken to make a loaded salad with greens, nuts and seeds, avacados, tomatoes, olives, and Glory dressing. If you haven’t tried this dressing you have to – check out the recipe below.

A dispatch from the arts festival in Ottawa

I

am one of the lucky few who will be at Northern Scene for the entire 10 days. I’m here with the production of Leonard Linklater’s play, Justice, for performances May 2 to 4 at the Arts Court Theatre in Ottawa.

I am the costume designer for the production and studying under director, Yvette Nolan.

Each day we have been in rehearsal for seven hours in order to remount the play from its original Yukon tour in the Fall 2012. It is hard to say goodbye to new found friends, who are only in Ottawa for a few days, but the connections have been made.

Being a part of Northern Scene actually feels a lot like home.

The positive energy is radiating

from the volunteers, the performers and everyone in between.

Everywhere you look there are the familiar, smiling faces of Yukoners and other Northerners — we have to be a positive people to live in such cold and remote places.

The majority of participants are staying at the same downtown hotel, where there is an information table set up in the lobby and all of the front desk staff are wearing Northern Scene t-shirts. The organization and hospitality of this event has been flawless. Almost every night participants and presenters can gather at the hotel in the Hub, a lounge-type room where a full dinner is available and Scene musicians perform.

The Hub allows for casual pan-northern conversations regarding future projects: both North—South and Northwest—Northeast. It also gives participants

another chance to enjoy each other’s work.

It’s awesome that the festival is bringing the North to the South, instead of the other way round.

Northern artists of all mediums: fashion, visual, performance, music, theatre, storytelling and cuisine are gaining national and international exposure.

Our communal talent is a gem that has been discovered, and it will not PHOTO: Patti Flather be long until the rest of Canada comes knocking.

And if it is not our artists that draw them, it may well be the cow and bullmoose calls delivered by the Yukon’s Commissioner, Hon. Doug Phillips at the opening ceremonies reception.

It is an honour to be here and I am proud to be representing the Yukon at the first Northern Scene Festival Ottawa has ever seen.

at the bottom and completely cover each item with the hot coals. A layer of dirt can be used between the items to minimize scorching.

Cover the coals in the pit with gravel/dirt to a depth of at 6-8 inches. If you want steam, put water soaked burlap on top of the food items before burying or pour a can of water over the covering material.

It takes a bit of experimentation or a lot of luck to come up with the correct cooking time for the first effort but probably three to three-and-a-half hours is a minimum for a medium chicken, a roast, or ribs. You can take it out to check for doneness and re-insert, if necessary.

The first effort will give you

the a cooking time gauge for subsequent efforts.

If you are cooking a number of packages, it’s important to distinctly shape them or mark them so you can identify them as longer cooking items or when you think it’s time to take them out.

Try olive oil and oyster sauce on potatoes, and olive oil and cinnamon on carrots.

ukon is blessed with many pea-gravel beaches surrounding our lakes. These locations are perfect for pit-cooking. It is a bit of effort to dig out the pit, reduce the fire to coals, prepare the food and arrange it on the fire, but once you’ve done that you can relax.

Food wrapped in good quality foil or in a Dutch oven cooks well in a pit, particularly large items such as a roast, whole fowl or ribs. By layering the items in the pit with meat first, then potatoes and vegetables, the whole meal can be cooked underground.

Heat is retained in the stones/ gravel and buried coals in much the same fashion as your home oven. Your buried fire starts off hot and gradually cools, but even without a constant temperature you will end up with a fully cooked meal.

Dig a hole much larger than the size of what you are cooking, remembering that there must be lots of room for the gravel and heat retaining flat stones. Line the pit with flat stones and light a large hot fire in the pit. Keep stoking it for at least an hour to heat up the stones and the surrounding gravel. Spread the coals to cover the bottom and sides of the pit.

Tarot cards are a tool for divination and reflection, giving the person receiving the reading insight into past, present and future.

The exact origin of the Tarot remains disputed and suitably mysterious.

“The Tarot cards in more or less their present form appeared in 15th century Italy, but many believe their origins trace back to ancient Egypt or even the fabled Atlantis,” says Whitehorse Artist Neil Graham. “They have been snapshots of time as artists and illustrators stamped them with their own unique brands.”

Today, thousands of decks are read worldwide using a variety of imagery including cats, fairies, runes, nature photography and the Kabbalah, which is Jewish mystical school of thought.

Graham has been creating his own soulful, colourful deck of Tarot cards and his art exhibit, called Hand of the North, is on display this month in Whitehorse.

The cards feature northern im-

agery and portraits of Yukoners.

For example, local potter Patrick Royle is the subject Graham painted for the Tarot card called The Hermit.

The landscape of the North also permeates the deck. In The Ten of Swords, an igloo is stabbed with swords and a figure spills out onto the snow.

“I expressed my ideas as evocative of the North, both remembered and actual,” he says.

Graham began his Tarot series in 2006. After more than six years, the deck is now complete; with all 78 cards painted in acrylic on 4-inch x 5.4 inch pine boards.

As a Tarot reader myself, and after speaking to Graham about the journey behind his uplifting Tarot, I see it fitting that he depicted himself as The Fool (the equivalent of the Joker in a regular deck of cards).

The Fool connects two worlds – the everyday, contemporary world where most of us live most of the time and the nonverbal land of imagination inhabited by Tarot characters, which we visit occasionally.”

Portraying the artist as The Fool underlines the artist as a traveler of unseen worlds — speaking truths, spying on the King, collecting information and bringing it to light for others. Historically, Nichols notes, The Fool/Court Jester/Joker was sometimes a person with mental illness, setting them apart from the rest of court as one with special insight.

In 2003, Graham was diagnosed with a form of schizophrenia, and between that time and 2011 he

was hospitalized more than 10 times.

“This deck reflects a complex journey,” he says. “From the initial 22 Major Arcana I produced for The Studio Gallery Associations’ The Tarot exhibition in 2006, to the complete 78 card deck, these paintings have been a labour of love, inspiration, fortitude and resilience. Done between seemingly endless quests for stability, these paintings became an expression of my love of art, life, and the mysteries that inspire us.”

He feels that an artist is a public figure, and, as such, can help publicly de-stigmatize and demystify mental health issues.

“It is possible to do a beautiful thing, and the Tarot cards are a wonderful expression of life, while suffering,” he says. “I’m not

saying that suffering is necessary for art – it isn’t. But a disability doesn’t mean that life has to have limits.”

Graham also mentors youth with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Graham printed 50 Tarot decks of his paintings, packaged in signed and numbered boxes designed by Margriet Aasman. The decks are available for purchase for $125.

Graham’s exhibition Hand of the North opened at Yukon Artists @ Work on May 3rd and continues until June 5. The show will also travel to Ontario and France.
