s I write this, the final days of April are being whittled away to nothing.

Yet when I awoke this morning and surveyed my kingdom from the large bay window in our living room I was chagrinned to discover my little Civic was covered with a white blanket.

Rude.

One of my roommates traipsed past me and announced cheerfully, “Hooray for the snow.”

These might not have been her exact words, but you get the idea.

Rude.

“You’re not being funny,” I shot back flatly.

I have little-to-no sense of humour in the a.m. before my first cup o’ mud batters its way into my metabolism. Besides, my mind was already furiously cataloging the series of small annoyances that would no doubt accumulate throughout the day as a result of this “spring” mockery.

Aside from the trivial nuisances, there was a larger question to consider: how would this latest snowfall affect the start of the impending disc golf season?

For the uninitiated (poor devils) disc golf is the carefree and hippy-loved cousin of regular golf.

Since I’m jonesing for the sport so badly, it is reasonable to inquire why I don’t just say “nuts to you, weather” and go play a renegade round in the snow. Believe me, I have no problem adapting traditional summer activities — like soccer or walking around in a teeshirt — for the winter. But disc golf is a different animal.

mall things can have a big impact on our lives. Like a used tea bag.

Before Nicole Bauberger’s dad passed away, they were just the end product of a nice cup of tea.

But then they became a symbol of a life gone too soon; of the dreams we hold on to as time slips away; of the space we leave behind in people’s lives when we die.

Bauberger, a Whitehorse-based artist, has been contemplating these things and the love she has for her dad, while sipping steaming hot cups of tea. Since her dad passed away, she has been creating new artwork with used tea bags – and she can’t generate enough herself.

She’s now inviting us all to pop down to the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC) between May 2 and 10 to pick up some organic Earl Grey and English Breakfast tea, enjoy it, and then return the tea bags, damp enough to drip, by May 10.

She’ll be showing her new art at the YAC starting on May 16.

When her dad died in 2010, she and her mom were confronted with dozens of jars of used tea bags.

Her dad had saved them over the years to use on his model railroad dioramas. He liked to use the dried tealeaves to recreate the look of ground cover.

But when Bauberger was faced with 50 jars of tea bags, she and her mom decided to compost them.

“It was sad — but what do you do with them?” she says. “My dad was a model rail-roader, so a lot of

things he had saved with the intent to use them (for his dioramas) in his retirement.”

But back in Whitehorse, ideas began to percolate and she developed a new appreciation for the diaphanous bags and the streaks of colour the damp tea makes. Except now the big stash was gone.

That’s when she kicked into gear drinking tea and asking friends to donate their used tea bags.

She has been hanging some of the wet tea bags against paper, allowing the drips to leave their mark. She has also been emptying other used tea bags and using the rectangular material as tiny pieces of fabric and sewing them together.

“I got my partner Dean to make a form of my body, and I took a whole bunch of tea bags and I sewed a dress with them,” she says. “The dress is light and transparent, but the most interesting thing about the dress is the empty space inside, because, for me, it evokes the sense of a person who isn’t there.”

The little shapes of the bags are outlined in Bauberger’s red stitching.

“The connection to blood and veins and life — all of these connotations of red was intentional,” she says.

The dress is complete and will be shown as part of the Remains exhibition. But other pieces are still unfinished. She will be using some of the tea bags, the labels and the threads to embed in beeswax to make encaustic paintings

he ice bridge across the Yukon River in Dawson was closed by April 11 last year and it looked “iffy” for a week before that.

As I write this column on April 21, I have just been watching the ice racing cars cruising around their slick track on the river. Several vehicles and a couple of ATVs crossed the bridge in the few minutes we were there. Two days before that I drove across because I wanted a photo of the town from the middle of the river.

Things seem to be a little behind schedule this year. In the records since 1896 the river has broken up as early as April 9 and as late as May 28. Last year it was May 1. In 2011 it was May 7. If I had to guess I’d go for the later of those two dates this year.

The IODE Break-Up Tripod, installed by members of the Yukon Order of Pioneers, has been out on the river for nearly a month at this point. It’s part of a traditional guessing game that goes back to

the Gold Rush. When the tripod heads on down river and the ice clears in front of the town, breakup is said to have happened, even if there may still be ice upstream or downstream from Dawson.

The tripod is wired to a clock that used to be fastened to the Old CIBC building, but has been attached to the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre for many years now.

Contrary to popular opinion, stopping the clock does not trigger the alarm at the fire hall. That’s a separate operation, which happens after someone notifies the fire department that things are moving.

It is rare that the first movement of the ice does not have witnesses. Some people walk the dyke at every hour because they

are hoping they have the winning guess, but most people do it because the break-up signals the real end of winter and the beginning of our short spring.

Typically the river in front of Dawson will clear out completely within a few days of break-up and then, a week or so later, the rivers that feed the Yukon will let their flows loose. Then it’s safe to slide the George Black Ferry from its winter berth into the river.

The winner of the Ice Pool is the person who comes closest to the actual hour and minute of the event. Half of the profit raised by the sale of the tickets goes to the winner and the other half to the IODE to support various charitable activities.

Fantastic Felines

M.A.D. program presents the musical Cats May 3 to 11

fter 20 years, the M.A.D. program can now boast it has outlasted even Cats.

How fitting that the Music, Arts and Drama Grades 11/12 class will be performing the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical — the secondlongest running show on Broadway — over the next two weekends at the Wood Street Centre in Whitehorse.

Cats tells the story of a feral tribe called the Jellicles and their annual decision to send one cat to the afterlife to begin anew.

Told solely through movement and song, only the well-known song “Memory” is not based on the poems of T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

Upon entering M.A.D.’s home in the 1950s-era Wood Street building, there is no mistaking it for anything but a school. However, the theatre is well into the process of being transformed from a former gymnasium into an oversized junkyard.

Amidst this feline habitat is director and teacher Mary Sloan.

“Cats is just magical,” she says. “It’s a singing and dancing extravaganza.”

Cats was selected based on the aptitude for dance of this semester’s class.

“We’ve thought about it year after year, but we’ve never done it before,” says Sloan. “We always take a look at the group we’ve got and this year we’ve got a real dancing group and we thought ‘Well, if we’re going to do Cats we better do it this year.’”

The dancing has been coming along beautifully under the instruction of dance teacher Dale Cooper, but the music has admittedly been a challenge.

“It’s really difficult music to

sing lots of harmonies,” says Sloan. “We’ve been really working hard because it’s very complicated music. It’s typical Andrew Lloyd Webber.”

Cast members Michaela Atkinson and Santana Berryman emphatically agree: “The music is so high. We’re both sopranos and we find it really challenging to sing.”

Still, it’s the music that makes the magic.

“I love the variety,” says Sloan.

“I listen to it over and over because I’m doing the sound, and I never get tired of it. It’s so powerful.”

Berryman and Atkinson, playing Grizabella the pariah and twins Coricopat and Tantomile respectively, nonetheless feel confident and excited about the show.

Sloan and fellow teacher Jeff Nordlund have seemingly mastered the task of musical theatre boot camp. They undertake a staggering six productions each year, with a major show like Cats taking five to six weeks to produce.

This particular class has been

together since February. While some of the students have attended M.A.D. before, kids may enter the program without prior experience.

But students and parents must understand that the program is no mere stroll on the catwalk.

“We tell them it’s rigourous and it’s fast,” Sloan says. “You don’t have time to be shy, you don’t have time to be away on big family trips.”

Still, students never seems to get left behind.

Each applicant must participate in an interview, prepare an assignment of their own and actively engage in a participatory day. After that, the students are largely self-selected.

“You just assume everybody is going to make it and everyone does, everyone rises to the top,” Sloan says. “There’s always a goal here. It gives an urgency because you’d better learn this because there’s going to be a performance at the end.”

dates conventional academic work. Students write both the English and Social Studies exams. The day of the shows’s preview, two students will be writing the standardized language proficiency test.

M.A.D. relies on the support and talent within the community.

For Cats, vocal teacher Barbara Chamberlain has been working closely with the students. They also benefit from workshops held

by Brad L’Ecuyer, the musical director for the Guild’s Chicago, and will be working with local actor Brian Fidler following Cats.

For Sloan, a special treat is when former M.A.D. students return in a professional capacity to teach components of the program.

On this particular day, former student and current teacher Carolyn Westberg was on hand to help students with their makeup prior to a full dress rehearsal.

“The nice thing about a group like this is that they’re so independent, they can just go off and do their own makeup,” comments Sloan.

f you’ve had your ear to the Yukon ground in the past year, you’ve probably felt a vibration shaking from 86Heaven – they’re an informal conglomerate of Yukon hip hop artists headed

by Warren Strand a.k.a. Abstract Original.

Strand is of Southern Tutchone decent, representing the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations and the majority of his tracks have been laid down in Haines Junction at his unofficial recording studio: the basement.

“Really, 86Heaven is [an umbrella for] anyone I do a track with, like Nigel Boyle or Paddy Jim,” says Strand. “I want to give others a chance to get on professional sounding music and give them a chance to express themselves. If you want to [make music], I’m not going to do the work for you, but I’ll give you an opportunity. If you put the work in, I’ll put the work in, even if it’s just a verse.”

This openness is woven into the fabric of his music, which is created using beats from sharing websites and then distributing music through the free medium of Sound Cloud (www.SoundCloud.com/AbstractOriginal), on which you can also hear his solo tunes.

In 2012 Strand performed at the Haines Junction Aboriginal Day Festival and the Canada Day Celebration in Whitehorse, alongside the up and coming Vancouverbased hip hop group KIDS. In June he is set to perform at the Adaka Cultural Festival for the second year in a row.

“It means quite a bit for me to be invited to perform at (at this) festival because I take everything going into it seriously and because it’s going to be one of the bigger shows that I have done in the past couple of years,” he says. “I’m grateful for their invitation because it is getting me back into performing and it is nice to be recognized, even though I’m a small town artist just making music in my basement.”

Although Strand’s introduction to hip hop was an obscenity-laced album, Abstract’s current music contains few curses and, moreover, hidden gems of rhyme and wisdom. “[Making music] is a good vent for me when I am feeling angry or sad,” he says. “I can express myself through a new song, or find release in an old song that I’ve already written.”

a plumber apprenticeship in Calgary, as well as making music and he is grateful for his opportunities.

“I’d like to thank everyone that I’ve worked with, anyone I’ve collaborated with, 86Heaven, my supportive parents, my family and everyone else who’s given me the drive, motivation and passion to keep doing what I’m doing,” he says.

Declining enrollments in Information Technology programs will affect us all.

ncreasingly, we use technology to communicate with family and friends as well as for shopping, banking, news and entertainment.

This increase, however, is accompanied by a decline that has a potential impact on us all: enrollment in computerrelated programs in North American and European colleges and universities has declined by more than 50 per cent since 2002.

This is somewhat confusing given the surge in the use and complexity of modern technology.

Some colleges and universities have closed or scaled down their information technology programs. In the Yukon, for example, we went from having a full, stand-alone, two-year diploma to a collaborative program where the teaching is shared through four colleges.

This trend will result in fewer specialists available to provide computer support, whether for business networks or home users.

Subsequently, the smaller number of technicians available will be able to charge higher fees for their services.

Numerous reasons for this phenomenon have been considered.

Some say the industry is cyclical, and we are simply in a downturn.

The fact that the cyclical downturn has lasted over half of the life of the industry never seems to come into the discussion.

Also, support services are often contracted to offshore countries where salary expectations are

The Provider heads to Cannes Moira Sauer’s short film explores northern gothic themes

F

or a novice filmmaker, Moira Sauer has been getting a lot of mileage from her sixminute silent short.

The latest victory for her film, The Provider, is an invitation from Telefilm Canada to screen at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in mid-May. The Provider started life as a last-minute entry in Cold Snap, a competition in Winter 2011 that challenged aspiring filmmakers to shoot and edit a short film in the space of only 48 hours. Sauer’s entry won the competition’s Best Film award and the Peoples’ Choice award.

The following spring, The Provider won Sauer first prize in the Dawson City International Short Film Festival’s Made in The Yukon Emerging Artist category. Last spring it also screened at the Vancouver Women in Film Festival, followed by a showing at the Tromso International Film Festival in Norway.

The film will show at Northern Scene in Ottawa on May 2, as part of Blood And Snow, a collection of 12 short films from the North and then two weeks later it’s on to Cannes, where the world’s most famous film festival runs from May 15 to 26.

The Provider features Sauer as a young woman in the Klondike with her own dog team, in the days of the Gold Rush. Struggling through a long, cold, lonesome Yukon winter, she advertises for a gentleman companion, who must be a good provider. Whitehorse musician Ryan McNally plays the

young man who answers the call, and provides a surprise ending that Sauer calls “northern gothic.”

“It’s a little bit based in truth, not entirely, but a little bit,” she says. “I filmed it right in my backyard with my dogs, and I’ve always been pretty vocal about the lack of eligible men in this town as well, so the idea of doing a mailorder husband really appealed to me.”

As for the film’s budget?

“I bought everyone sushi lunch on the Saturday (of filming), so whatever that came to.” Some funding from the Yukon Film and Sound Commission for post-production editing also helped complete the film.

Sauer cites an innate flair for organization as helpful to the film’s success.

“I also am very ruthless with how I shoot the film, and it’s essentially one take, unless there’s something that goes horribly wrong,” she says. “My only experience has been in theatre, so I was completely fresh and out of the box… I work well with deadlines.

I really function with a tight timeframe.”

At Cannes, her film will be showcased with 43 other Canadian short films selected by Telefilm Canada, in a special category called Not Short On Talent.

Sauer cites Quebec as a dynamic force at Cannes.

Quebecers go to French films in a way that we don’t necessarily go to our own films at home in the rest of the country.”

Sauer says she wants to continue working on a trilogy of northern gothic films, of which her new film The Gift is the second, with a final in the series yet to be shot.

“I really enjoy shorts,” she says. “It feels like a feasible undertaking for me, and I can see the end-point for it too, which I really appreciate.”

Holistic Health Day showcases some trippy alternative practices

love stories of miraculous cures that challenge status quo notions of medicine — stories of group prayers healing illness, terminal cancer eradicated by meditation and visualization, angels providing crucial information in times of need.

Skeptics claim such stories are instances of the placebo effect. I prefer to consider the mysterious possibilities of holistic healthcare — care that involves and addresses the client’s mental, spiritual, physical and social conditions,

Among those offering services are Ellen Brian, a Tarot reader and astrologer; Louise Hardy MA, a creative art therapist; Jim Zheng a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor; Alison Zeidler, a practitioner of Quantum Touch, which is described on the Quantum Touch website as a method “to focus and amplify lifeforce energy (or chi, bioenergy, prana) by combining various breathing and energy awareness exercises.”

“My ultimate goal is to be of

service to those wanting inner peace, freedom and self-love in their life,” says Nelken.

Nelken says angels are not like the common image of angels we are used to.

“I do not see muscular, winged people,” she says. “Angels are defined by a distinct energy that operates on a much more profound and higher frequency than humans are capable of. The cards are used as a tool in order for the energy of the angels to communicate a bit more clearly. There are numerous ways angels communicate — through dreams, strong gut feelings, strangers helping you, coins, feathers and visions. Angels are non-denominational, so regardless of your religious beliefs or non-beliefs their energy helps us all.”

Our Egg Situation

Our geese don’t mind sitting in the snow on our farm. They are hardy birds, well suited for northern farms.

M

y husband Allan got a goose egg last night. He wasn’t hurt as some may suspect, rather he found an actual egg out in the goose pen while doing chores.

Lately the egg situation on the farm has been nonexistent. Our laying hens stopped giving us eggs some time just after Christmas.

For the first time in a decade we had to buy eggs.

It was unusual deciding what kind to buy. I don’t remember there being so many choices available: free range, free run, omega 3, organic, organic free range – the list seemed endless. All I knew was I didn’t want any white eggs; brown eggs have the reputation of being more healthy.

But truly, the shell colour has little to do with what is inside. I have known several farmers who have chickens that produce eggs of either colour. And once they are cracked open into the frying pan, they are indistinguishable.

But after years of having brown eggs, the white ones just seem unappealing.

It’s normal for a chicken to stop their production of eggs in the winter, but for whatever reason our birds haven’t done this. They have slowed down egg production before, but this was the first time they stopped completely.

As a hen gets older it produces fewer eggs and I knew our hens were starting to creep up in age. When they first stopped, we thought the geese were harassing them too much so we separated

them. But this didn’t change the situation.

By the time we bought our first dozen eggs the geese had started to lay eggs of their own.

A goose egg is about the equivalent of two chicken eggs. There is more yolk in a goose egg but the taste and texture are about the same as the chicken variety. So we still had farm eggs.

I was surprised the geese were laying eggs so early in the year, though. While chickens usually lay about 300 eggs in 365 days, geese only lay eggs for about six months. They usually start when temperatures warm up enough to feel like spring. I guess the warm temperatures we got in January tricked our geese into thinking it was time to start a family. As temperatures dropped again in February, they stopped giving us eggs.

Lately it has felt like spring.

The sun has been very warm and snow is melting all around us.

There is mud and water in the driveway. Yesterday it was overcast and began to snow again. It almost looked like winter had returned. But with the geese again laying eggs I hope spring is here to stay.

Here’s What They’ve Been Up To SOVA students celebrate graduation with a year-end show

I

t must be a wild ride to work at the Yukon School of Visual Art (SOVA) in Dawson City.

This year they had a student bring a horse into the gallery as part of an art project; another student made a set of musical instruments from a bunch of stuff; and many others dug deep into the shadows of their creativity to pull out bizarre and thoughtprovoking performance art pieces.

Curtis Collins, PhD, the chair and program director at SOVA, says a few students stood out this year and it’s been a pleasure to see what they came up with.

“What I’m seeing as a strength this year is students really pushing their artistic limits,” Collins says.

Collins is impressed with the set of instruments that Derian Blake made, which are functional sculptures. Collins has them on display in his office, with a soundtrack of music made with them.

Collins says artistic talent in performance art was strong with this year’s batch of students, particularly Isabel Ford and Andrée Belanger.

Ford, for example, did a performance that involved crawling through the hallway and into classrooms wearing garbage bags. And it was Belanger doing the aforementioned “horsing around.”

“Students have an opportunity to understand their identity here and to have that come

out in a variety of creative ways,” Collins says. “In this case, it brings Andree’s artistic [drive], and her family history in rural areas, together.” Collins says the concept was about off-setting environments; bringing a non-gallery item into a gallery, thus creating questions about things we think we know, like the parameters of a gallery, of art, and, in this case, of horses. The exhibit showed that some horses like to showboat.

“There was hay in the corner of the gallery, and he (Romeo, the horse) would walk over to the corner and grab some hay, and then walk up to where the people were and look at us and chew,” Collins says. “The horse was a willing and happy participant.”

The SOVA Year-End Exhibition is on display until May 11 at the SOVA and ODD Galleries in Dawson City.

Seeking Beervana with Lara Lewis

An Evening of Delightful Beer Pairings

T

he number on my phone glared at me in ugly black digits: 2,020. My Fitness Pal app wasn’t being very friend-like, accusing me of eating over 2,000 calories in a single sitting. I undid the top button of my jeans and decided it was worth every bit of gut-distending discomfort. It’s not often you stumble upon a true beer-pairing dinner.

The staff at Yukon Brewing Company put their heads together with the Culinary Arts program at Yukon College to come up with a stellar beer-centric meal in early April. I gained a new appreciation for our local brewery, which was willing to put the effort into a fundraising event for the students. The 38 seat multi-course supper was held at the Hilltop Bistro at the Yukon College, and the Food and Beverage students did a fine job of serving and tending to the guests.

One serving was Yukon Gold-enhanced onion soup with a blue cheese crouton. Darcy Laliberty,

a Yukon Brewing stalwart and MC for the evening, talked about how blue cheese can stand up to strong flavours — in this case, Double Trouble, an Imperial IPA. The bitterness of the blue cheese and bittering hops in the beer tag-teamed the sweet and savoury onion soup — flavour heaven.

The only problem with drinking a Double IPA early in the game is that its assault on your tongue takes time to dissipate.

The soup was followed by a beet and bibb lettuce salad paired with the less punchy younger brother to the Imperial IPA — Ice Fog. Of course, it didn’t take long for the ole palate to recalibrate, and after sinking into beet morsels and the bacon-and-beer salad dressing, I was quite happy to sip on the more subtle Ice Fog. I was a little concerned about the main course: lamb. I have Welsh heritage and I think my ancestors’ fondness for all things lamb has turned me off of it. Re-

gardless, this lamb was fall-offthe-bone succulent. It was braised in Boreal Herbal Cream Ale and served in a shimmering pool of reduced veggie/beer broth. So good.

I am not a dessert eater. Anything with too much sugar gives me a diabetic quiver, even though my pancreas is fully functioning.

Give me salt and I’m happy. But dessert is a commodity in our household: Warm apple fritters with homemade ice cream is like fiat currency. My partner ended up with most of my dessert but not before I scraped every bit of beer caramel off the plate, made with Yukon Red Amber Ale. The hop flavour in the caramel was revelatory.

Dessert was perfectly paired with the Midnight Sun Espresso Stout, a slightly sweet stout with enough bitterness in the roasted malts to offset the dessert’s sweetness. Although my brain and stomach were doing battle by the

Olives from the Old Country

B

y all accounts, my partner’s grandmother was a tiny, independent, and generous woman that I would have loved. Proudly bearing the name Francis Minervini Arnone, she remained a Sicilian at heart long after emigrating. A working single mother, she juggled duties to make sure that the culinary part of her traditions remained a priority, and she fed her family very well.

When her only child met and married a blond-haired, blue-eyed woman from the west, she set about teaching the new Mrs. Arnone the necessary skill with pasta and seafood, sauces and stocks, fresh vegetables and even fresher herbs. To this day, even a late-night arrival or one in the oppressive heat and humidity of an Illinois summer is met with a heaping bowl of homemade ravioli and a simple and exquisite salad of bright Italian flavours. In the dead of each Midwestern winter, Grandma Arnone braved the fish markets of Chicago to ensure that the family could enjoy a traditional Sicilian seafood feast for Christmas Eve. Her home was a place of delicious smells and — mysterious and delightful to the grandkids — the traditional glass of wine with dinner and espresso to settle the digestion.

of growing up in Italy, of immigrant life in Chicago, of neighbourhoods and friends through the years. Many of the stories involved food, of course, but one of the family favourites was about olive season in her childhood. She recalled picking bright green olives right from the trees, loading them into baskets on the back of a donkey, and leading the donkey into town to sell the olives at market. Surely such a perfect story must be made up, they thought, but it was a good story and one that was shared over and over.

Then, browsing the aisles of an Italian market in the city one day, Allen’s mother found it: a giant can of Sicilian Castelvetrano olives. Wrapping the can was an illustration of the bucolic Italian countryside, all warm colours and round hills and tidy buildings. Along the path leading through the hills walked a young girl leading a donkey, its baskets heaped with olives. Mrs. Arnone bought what has since become a family staple, olives the verdant green of spring, meaty and fresh, with just the faintest hint of brine. They all taste good, but the most loved ones come from labels seemingly drawn from Grandma’s memories.

When travelling, we search out Castelvetranos in Ital-

ian specialty shops and pack home tins and plastic buckets in bulging luggage. They show up in the occasional deli olive bar, glowing among the dull greens and dark purples and shiny blacks. They taste best, though, at those loud, crazy, multi-generational gatherings of family that never seem to happen often enough. There are bowls of olives scattered about the long dinner table, set on kitchen counters to eat while cooking, and shared on the lawn by kids of all ages. Even the gallon tin of oil next to the stove bears the image of girl and donkey winding their way to market.

Grandma Arnone never returned to Italy as she wanted, bringing family to meet old friends and find the sights, smells, and tastes of her childhood. She passed on before we had a chance to go, but that dream and her stories live on in the fantastic Castelvetrano olive. This, we imagine, is the subtle brine taste of a Sicilian breeze during the olive harvest, and of a kind of home.

T

here are two things that really frustrate me — and they are related.

First, the couches in my house have permanent dents from the backsides of my kids.

“Go outside and do something,” I say, echoing the words from the mouths of my parents when I was a kid. Of course the same resistance exists now as it did then, but when I say, “Just go and find someone out there to do something with,” it isn’t the same as it was when I was their age.

Is it?

Or am I just one of those “back in my day” pseudo-seniors I hated as a kid?

That brings me to my other frustration. There are a ton of great parks out there, and they are constantly EMPTY. All that space, all that investment, all going to waste.

As I was growing up, my parents would kick me out of the house and there would be someone else out there (many someones) whose

parents had done the same thing.

So what’s changed? Are there no kids around any more, other than mine? I don’t think that’s it.

After all, the schools seem to find them.

Are there more programmed activities for kids that are so much better? Are we too afraid to send our kids to the park? Maybe, but the solution to that problem is to send more kids to the park, isn’t it? There’s safety in numbers, and so much more.

Community, for example.

I knew every kid up and down my block, and for a large radius around that block. It didn’t matter if they were a little older or a little younger, from a different school or even home-schooled. My kids don’t seem to know the kids across the street even though they walk the same paths to school.

I guess the current solution is to send them out to [insert whatever sports program you choose here] so they can learn how to play something.

But then what will ever happen to the makeshift games organized by youth — with no left field or 3rd base because of the fence, or separate rules for the younger kids?

Remember the imagination that went into those games?

Sure, there were times I would sit on the curbside with my best friend Craig talking about what jerks my parents were for kicking me outside ‘cause there was nobody around. But there was one, and before long another would be around, then another kid.

Soon a game of who-can-slowride-their-bike-the-longest-andget-to-the-finish-line-last-without-touching-the-ground would start up.

Maybe I’m just getting nostalgic in my pseudo-senior years — pining for the good old days. But I’ve heard it from others, as well.

I guess there are two options that will alleviate my frustrations a little. Either we can all decide to get our kids off the couches and send them outside to the parks around our city, or we can look to solve another problem: the housing shortage.

We can surely infill those unused parks with some affordable housing projects. I may still have those dents in my couch, but at least I won’t have to look at the empty parks any more.

I say fill them with kids or Infill them.

Ground Control to Commander Chris

Primary students get a 10-minute window into life in outer space

F

or 10 minutes on Saturday, April 18, Commander Chris Hadfield, the Canadian astronaut currently onboard the International Space Station, addressed a packed gymnasium at Grey Mountain Primary School in Whitehorse.

Fifteen students from the school asked Hadfield questions about his experience on the shuttle and his life in space. Parents and other students listened as Hadfield’s voice faded into the room.

“I copy, loud and clear. Grey Mountain School in Yukon, Canada, this is Chris Hadfield.”

Hadfield discussed the sheer size of the space station, which is the equivalent of about five hockey rinks, how he stays fit, how long he sleeps (six to seven hours per night) and what he does to pass the time.

The space station is equipped with a treadmill and Hadfield said he also uses elastic bands for resistance workouts.

“Your body gets weak without the constant weight of gravity,” he said. “But you have to keep a towel handy when your exercise, otherwise the sweat floats

around and sticks to the ceiling.”

He said he plays guitar and sings, and spends time looking out the window, “because the earth is so beautiful from up here.”

The call to the space station involved some intricate planning, says Ron McFadyen, vice-president of the Yukon Amateur Radio Association. An amateur radio operator in Italy was able to pick up the space station as it passed above his house, and relayed the call from the school to the ISS. There was a 10-and-a-half minute window of signal acquisition to signal loss, explains McFadyden.

And the call was near the top of McFadyden’s achievements in his 50 years as a broadcaster.

“It could not have gone any better,” McFadyden says.

“We practiced five times. The school did a great job getting everyone prepared for this.”

The call was made possible through Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS), a volunteer program aimed at getting students interested in space.

“He’s done more public relations with the space program than anyone else,” McFadyen says. “He’s really generating an interest in space.”

The call came amid the school’s space learning module. Kier Hyde, a Grade 3 teacher at the school, helped prepare the students for the experience. Dressed in an orange NASA jump suit, emblazoned with his own Commander Hyde-field patch, Hyde

said everyone at school has been bitten by the space bug.

“We said we’d do anything to make this happen, and we’re just so impressed with how everything went,” he says. “This is definitely one of the best experiences I’ve had as a teacher.”

The students also spent two weeks working with Whitehorse artist Leslie Leong to make two kidsized space shuttles, while learning the curriculum’s space unit.

Hadfield revealed that he had the necessary supplies to stay on

board for nine months. He also said the northern lights were visible, but sound was lost in the “vacuum of space.” The Great Wall of China is not visible but the Trans-Canada Highway is, and it’s one of his favourite landmarks to spot, he said.

Hadfield blasted into space on Dec. 19 and his return is expected around May 13, when he will reenter the atmosphere onboard a Soyuz Russian rocket.

He took command of the space station on March 13, becoming the first Canadian ever to do so. He said that while the experience has been incredible, he’s looking forward to his return.

“It’ll be very nice to get home and give everyone a hug,” he said, “and eat some fresh food.”

His work while onboard the space station has brought international attention to the program. He frequently posts to Twitter, where he has nearly one million followers, and uploads photos of space along with his daily observations.

He has a slow internet connection onboard, he said, but it’s fast enough to check email and communicate. The current mission is the pinnacle of a 20-year career for the Milton, Ontario native.

“This is what I dreamed of,” he told the students. “I decided to be an astronaut when I was nineyears-old.”

ith May here it is a good reminder that we only have, at best, five weeks of celestial observation left.

Recently, I have dedicated much of my time to Comet PanSTARRS and its travels through the Yukon’s skies. It has been an amazing journey, viewing this little cosmic snowball.

Looking forward, the next great cosmic adventure is two fold. The first part is the planet Saturn, which will be with us, and the second part is the Messier Marathon. All this is happening in the same region of the night sky.

The Messier Marathon is named after Charles “the ferret of comets” Messier, a French astronomer in the 1750s who pursued comets. Apparently comets were all the rage at the time.

Messier kept running into what he referred to as comet masqueraders, which we now know as galaxies, nebula and star clusters.

To keep from mistaking the masqueraders with actual comets, he kept a numbered list of all these imposters.

Messier’s list totaled 103 space objects. A few other additions bring the list to 109 or 110.

Those who live down south can see all the Messier objects in a single evening, but we cannot. Still, most are bright, easily found, and several dozen can be seen in a single evening.

A typical marathon starts in early evening as twilight picks off the last of the winters constellations like Orion. By midnight you are deep into the Virgo super cluster of galaxies, and then finally into the summer constellations of Cygnus and Hercules. In all, it takes five to six hours, but makes for a fabulous observing session.

Many of the Messier objects are visible in binoculars and a few are visible to the unaided eye.

May also brings planets aplenty. Venus is now coming out of the Sun’s glare and will be visible in the evening. On May 24, 26, 28, and 30 Venus, Mercury and Jupiter form a tight grouping low in the early evening western sky.

This will be an awesome view in binoculars and will make for an

excellent photo opportunity. Jupiter is now slipping lower into the horizon earlier each evening.

May is the best time for observing Saturn. This ringed gas giant can be found a few hours after sunset in the southeastern evening sky. By midnight it is at its highest, presenting the best view.

To the unaided eye Saturn looks like a bright star and in binoculars it looks like a mini UFO. A telescope, however, reveals its treasures: rings, shadows and cloud bands. Even in a modest spotting scope at 50X magnification the rings can be seen.

At 300X magnification on a clear night you can see three distinct ring systems, cloud bands on the planet and even the shadow of the rings in the planet below. Jaw dropping.

Take some time and head outside and see for yourself.

e all pay just a little more attention to coverage of events we attended just in case we are On TV. But On TV usually happens somewhere else, somewhere we can’t reach. But there is something waiting to bridge that gap.

Always there, often forgotten, occasionally awkward — it’s community television.

Community television exists because the CRTC (Canadian Radiotelevision and Telecommunications Commission) mandates that any reseller of cable signal, like Northwestel for instance, must give a certain amount of its gross revenue back to the community.

There are two options. One is to contribute to a national funder of Canadian TV. The other is to fund a community television station.

How Are Yo U

Going To Fill The Park?

In Whitehorse, Northwestel’s community station is channel 9 on your dial (dial, as if), and if in Yellowknife, channel 20.

When Northwestel wanted to revive their community TV station in 2009, Chris McNutt became its manager. With a permanent staff of two, Channel 9 needs to be flexible. Anyone, essentially, can walk in off the street and pitch an idea.

“We don’t really have a model, because every single instance is unique,” McNutt says. “And it all depends on the people, and the skills they have, and what they are willing to do or they don’t want to do.

“A lot of people are volunteering their time, so I can’t be a slave driver. I’m really working with people in whatever capacity they

want, and we fill in the gaps.”

Anthony Trombetta and McNutt, along with Community TV Technician Dave Hamlen and eventual co-host Chris Ford, came up with the concept for In My Parents’ Basement. This show takes a look at the entertainment and technology that is central to nerd culture.

Trombetta was comfortable being on screen, but was less adept at the technical aspects of television. There was some teaching to be done.

“Chris [McNutt] isn’t really a nerd himself, but he was acting as an executive producer and sort of laid it out,” says Trombetta. “He was giving us an idea of how to put the show together. Chris and Dave were just so eager to teach, becont’d on page 29...

They have all the stuff and all the gear and they just make it so easy, how could you not?”

For Trombetta, the show provides an outlet for an interest he hadn’t been able to celebrate properly.

“This is a pretty nerdy town and I’ve never had an opportunity to talk out loud about this stuff and gush,” he says. “Not to necessarily come out of the basement, but at least from the sanctity of our basements to talk to each other and nerd out. I thought it was high time to let our nerd flags fly.”

As Channel 9 tries to build a following and an identity, the broadcast media landscape is

shifting rapidly. Widespread access to high-definition cameras, and a means of dissemination (read: YouTube), means that more people are generating more content of higher quality. The rise of video-streaming services is also changing the dynamic between television and the internet.

“You go back in time 30 years, there were 13 channels on the dial and one of them was the community channel,” says McNutt. “A lot different than the 200 to 300 channels on that dial, and one of them is the community channel. It took us a while to get programming, and it took us a while to get interest, because it hadn’t been much of a relevant factor outside, well, city council’s always been on Monday night and RadioTV Bingo on Friday night, but as far as other programming, there had been a dearth.”

Channel 9 is making headway. They were one of

“I think TV as a separate entity is going to disappear,” he says. “A few years from now you’re going to go online to watch everything, but you’re not going to go to a separate box with a separate receiver to watch it.”

Still, McNutt and Trombetta each see community television, in whatever form it eventually takes, as an important ligature for people.

But with online tools like Facebook, people are more connected and concerned with their old school friends. Though the difference in elevation between the start of the race and its highest point is only around 460 metres, that doesn’t tell the real story. As the race travels along the highway and up and down through the mountain

There was a lot of pouting today in my workplace when I mentioned that registration for the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay (KCIBR) was already closed because they’d reached their limit of 1,200 r i d e r s just three w e e k s after registration opened on March 15th.

Whether you are hardcore, like Nadele e Flynn, who last year na Ir v in g rode 250 km solo and placed first amongst all the women’s teams, or one of the recreational 8-person teams whose goal is simply to see how much fun can be had over the course of a weekend, the KCIBR is the premier fun-and-athletic event of the summer.

“I experienced a series of losses as a teenager. As the Palliative Services Coordinator for Hospice Yukon I coordinate our Healing Touch and Vigil programs. It is always a joy to witness the transformative effect Healing Touch can have in relieving people’s pain and distress and providing them with a sense of calm and peace.

“In our Vigil program, we sit at the bedside of a dying person at home, in hospital or in one of the extended care facilities. This service can provide much needed relief to the family members or can be of great benefit when there is no family.

“The hardest part of hospice work is not being able to relieve people’s suffering, be it physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.

The best part is the amazing and inspiring people I meet and being a part of their lives at such a deeply personal and intimate time.”

Val Benoit recently lost her husband Ivan to cancer. She was able to use the services of the Hospice Palliative Care program to support her, just as she was supporting Ivan.

“The palliative care team was most helpful to me.

They made the first move and called me.

Then Emily [Tyson — Clinical Resource Social Worker] said that she would call me once a week — and she followed through, although she did say that I could call her anytime if I needed to.

“I could speak freely and tell them how I really felt, and there were no negative remarks, raised eyebrows or comeback as there is sometimes with family.

“The great folks at Palliative Care care about those left behind. It is very comforting to know that they are there for us.”

“I have personal experience where people I loved did not receive palliative care and died without appropriate symptom management or emotional and grief support to ease their journey. I was drawn to this work because I believe that we can do better to care for each other at end of life.

“The best part of my work is collaborating with other health professionals and caregivers to provide compassionate and competent care to individuals and families at an extremely challenging time of their life. The most difficult part is seeing the heavy burden of loss and grief experienced by people.

“Many people believe that palliative care is about the last hours of life, but actually people benefit from palliative care at first diagnosis and throughout the remaining months to years of their life.”

The kroket: delightfully unrefined

L

eave it to the chef of the French King Louis XIV to create a recipe that in modern times has become a Dutch national favourite: the kroket. This word is derived from the French word croquette, and the recipe is made with local variety in many of the European countries.

Unpretentious and ubiquitous, this cylinder shaped, bread-crumbed “sausage” filled with beef ragout is the only dish from my native country that I miss and am eager to fly to Europe for. I admit, Holland is not known for its gourmet food and I am afraid the kroket is the poster boy for this humiliating fact. An insult to the health-loving, vegetarian promoting and slow eating citizen, the deep fried kroket compensates for its evils with its delicious medley of sensory effects: the smell of fresh beef, the crackling sound when biting in its crispy layer, the smooth feel of the ragout and finally the taste of a perfectly spiced meat sauce. As a child I used to

bite one end off, scoop out the ragout and eat it with a spoon.

This left me with a heavenly tube of greasy crunch. As I grew up, birthday parties without the kroket were a disappointment and days out on the town were not complete without consuming this fast food.

From this introduction, the reader should have become aware that there is no way to describe this dish as anything close to refined. Surely, what can be expected of a food item that one can take out of a “snack bar” wall. Waiting patiently next to its cousin, the patat (fries) and mayonnaise, it would have been a perfect subject for a Warhol painting, if only he had lived in Holland. Put two euros in the slot, pull the handle (I remember some anxiety around this: what if it is stuck, or my fingers slip?), and voila! It lends itself well to the quick lunch or late evening snack, gobbling it down while standing or walking. One can also order the kroket in any respect-

fast food cook and open a chain of restaurants in Canada, promoting the kroket. I will bet my second life on it that these “snack bars” will make me rich.

It will replace the overrated hot dog in no time flat. Sadly, the kroket is not sold in Canada, but this does not stop me from fantasizing about it: It is a warm and sunny day in a small Dutch town.

Either way is victory: if she likes it, it will be a confirmation of her Dutch heritage. If she doesn’t, I can eat hers!

he skiing at Mount Sima was fantastic on the last weekend it was open this winter, but besides the excellent snow conditions and weather, the energy was buzzing and the hill was incredibly well prepared. Mount Sima just has to remain operational all year round.

Whatever happens to Mount Sima, the hiking trail will be there.

Last year the staff at Sima wanted the trail to be free to hike — so this year, just tell the staff you are going up. You can also pay for the lift and hike down the trail.

It takes about an hour to hike up following Pokey and at least an hour to hike back down. There are many beautiful views to enjoy. If you want to hike all the way up to the observation deck, it is longer again. What I love about the trail is that you can go up after work and have a good workout, but you could just as easily turn it into a day trip.

Last summer I worked as a volunteer and I really noticed the positive atmosphere among the staff.

One staff member said to me,

“We’re family. We all love working here.”

I offered to work on an interpretative hiking trail showcasing our native wildflowers. The idea was met with enthusiasm and I got all the support I wanted.

On my first afternoon there, I hiked up with Sam, my boss. We had similar ideas about the trail and the way we could deliver it.

We hiked up the mountain and did some flagging, marking a route towards the bigger lake.

From that point on I worked mostly by myself to get the trails ready, occasionally getting help from a friend.

When I started going up in August, I found blooming fireweed, yarrow, hawksbeard, fleabane, gentian, parnassia and sweet clover. On the Pokey run, just below where the trail starts for now, I found a single moonwort, which is a spore bearing plant, it’s actually a fern.

Higher on the slopes there were blue berries, and on the trail, moss berries, but I didn’t have time to do much picking. After all, there was the trail to work on — loop-

ing around the northwest side, through the spruce forest.

The trail is clearly marked with orange flagging tape, which eventually will be replaced by more permanent signs.

And if you feel brave, the bike trails are awesome. One day after cutting some trail, I rode up on the lift to try what a trail maker named Austin called the easiest biking trail, which was tough enough for me but still great fun and very beautiful.

So please check out trail after the weather warms up and the snow melts.
