couple of weeks ago my sister Hannah flew up from Vancouver, where she teaches at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and spent a few days in the Yukon. She was busy most of the time — meeting with members of the Yukon Orienteering Association (YOA) — so our sibling hang out sessions were limited. Still, we had a family dinner at my folks’ place and she came to watch me recite a poem (badly) at Brave New Words.

My sister, who graduated from F.H. Collins in 1997, is perhaps best remembered in the Yukon for her stint as Dawson City’s artistin-residence a half-decade ago.

Hannah and her collaborator, Valerie Salez, experimented with snow shoveling as an artistic medium.

The idea was to take something that most of us consider a dreary chore and reinterpret it as a form of creative expression — or something like that.

The back of my family’s ’87 Toyota Pickup still proudly dons a bumper sticker reading: I’d Rather Be Snow Shoveling.

But since then she has pursued her art elsewhere — Toronto, Portland, Vancouver, and residencies as far flung as Finland. Sometimes I have a vague idea of where she is and what she’s up to.

Case in point: a few days ago, as I was preparing to order my morning java from a local coffee shop, I scanned the cork board outside and did a double-take as I noticed my sister’s name on an advertisement for an art show called Traversing Yukon Landscapes. The poster implied she is one of seven artists featured at the Yukon Arts Centre’s Public Art Gallery until August 31.

I had almost certainly been told about this event, either by my sister or by my parents, but in the ongoing struggle to stitch my own life together, such details sometimes escape my mind.

I had a solid run as the sole Jickling sibling in the Yukon arts

community, but standing there in my pre-caffeinated state I was awakened to fact that I would once again be sharing the spotlight with Hannah. A nice short visit is one thing, but I didn’t want her mowing my lawn.

So I went to the exhibit opening on May 16 to check out my sister’s art. My competition.

Her work was not in the gallery at all.

It turns out much of Hannah’s recent practice has focused on illuminating the overlapping space between the sport of orienteering (in which participants navigate point-to-point through the woods using specialized maps) and the tradition of landscape artwork.

Suddenly the above-mentioned orienteering meetings made more sense.

Her contention is that orienteerers and artists both interpret landscapes using their own language and symbology. But she is interested in the subversive results when the symbols associated with orienteering are applied to art.

In Finland she designed an orienteering course using art pieces as checkpoints. One such checkpoint was a painting of a bridge.

By marking paintings of bridges with symbols denoting physical bridges, my sister Hannah hopes to subvert dominant notions of artistic interpretation.

On her orienteering map she marked the painting with the symbol orienteerers use to denote an actual, physical bridge.

In the Yukon she hopes to help members of the YOA curate their own show using their orienteering expertise as opposed to their artistic expertise. In this way she hopes to challenge orthodox notions of artistic interpretation.

Confused?

So am I. But it turns out she’s coming up to the Yukon forfor six weeks this summer, so she’ll have plenty of opportunity to explain herself.

And despite my earlier bluster about her “mowing my lawn,” I am looking forward to seeing her more than the status quo — which is once or twice a year.

As is the case with gold coins and pizza slices, two Jickling siblings are better than one.

flood of teenagers are about to finish school for the year and descend upon couches across Whitehorse, or wherever teens go. If you’re a parent looking for something productive and community-oriented for your kids 14-years-old and up to do, consider sending them to Freedom Trails Riding Association to volunteer.

Freedom Trails offers horseriding therapy to people with Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, brain injury, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, emotional trauma, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and other disabilities.

Yukon Minister of Justice Mike Nixon is a big supporter of the Freedom Trails program. His 11-year-old son Jack has ASD and has been participating in riding therapy since he was five years old.

“It’s a fantastic program,” Nixon said. “It’s definitely a program he enjoys doing and he looks forward to.

“Jack has two emotions: really happy and really angry – or frustrated. When he’s frustrated he can be challenging – he can pinch and scratch. But you don’t see it when he’s on the horse. He wants that horse to go – to go full speed.”

Each class has one certified instructor and three riders, while some riders don’t require a volunteer controlling their horse, other riders will have up to three volunteers attending to them: one controlling the horse and one or two supporting the rider.

When Jack participates in a riding class, he’ll manouever around cones; walk the horse up to a post with a ball, pluck a ball from a post and drop it in a basket; and practice horsemanship skills. All the while, Jack is engaging socially, and developing a variety of skills. “(The program) has definitely been a component in building his confidence over the past six years and it’s helped him to try new things,” Nixon says.

Freedom Trails is starting its new season this month, and while classes are full, many volunteers are needed.

Executive Director Judy Fortin says they are looking for experienced horse people to lead and for people who are simply comfortable being around a horse to support the rider.

The classes have been developed over the past 17 years by working with physiotherapists in the Yukon and sharing methods with other equine therapy organizations across North America.

Volunteers need only bring care and responsibility.

“The horse is doing the physiotherapy,” Fortin says. “What we have to do is provide the safety aspect of it; the horse experience; and people who love to work with people.”

Fortin says volunteers get benefits out of the program, too.

“It’s one happy place,” she says. “There are lots of smiles — the volunteers, the riders. It’s just a fun atmosphere.”

Visiting Artist Finds Inspiration in Faces and Stories Vancouver artist Michael Markowsky holds a selfportrait he did on his iPad. He is working on a project to photograph and create drawings of 1,300 Dawsonites – or as many as he can.

ancouver visual artist Michael Markowsky would someday like to make a landscape painting while standing on the surface of the moon.

On Earth, Markowsky has drawn landscapes while travelling across the country by

train and while riding inside, or strapped to the top of, other moving vehicles. Typically these projects have a video component and quite a few of his works can be seen online. In April last year he drew a series of landscapes at the North Pole while working for

the Department of Defence.

Markowsky is currently an artist-in-residence with the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture until June 3. His project in Dawson City is a little different. Since he arrived he’s been doing portraits — hundreds of portraits.

Last month he put out the following notice: I WANT TO DRAW YOUR PORTRAIT! I am trying to draw every single person in Dawson City (before June 1, 2013). I only need 10 seconds of your time. I just need to take your photograph with my iPad. Then I’ll base my drawing on that photo. It’s 100 per cent FREE and when I’m done I’ll email you the drawing.

He has managed to finish close to 200 drawings and has over 100 photos waiting to be worked on.

However, he’s finding that his work plan, which involved doing about 25 portraits per day, with 20 to 30 minutes spent on each, just isn’t working out.

As he told a group during his artist’s talk on May 9 “(I may have to settle for) as many as I can get done in the time I have,” rather than the 1,300 or so he had in mind.

Using his iPad and sketching over top of his subjects’ headshots has cut down the time needed to do the work. His iPad is much more portable than the combination of camera obscura, which is an early version of a camera, and computer projection

that he had previously used.

With the iPad he’s been able to capture faces at public events, as he did mine, and also go door-todoor, something he started doing when he decided to limit his pool of subjects to those he could capture in the town itself. This was much more effective than asking people to visit him at Maccaulay House, where he is staying during his stint in the artist-in-residence program.

Still, he ends up getting into long conversations with people and 10 seconds has become 60 minutes or more before he realizes it.

He’s found that Dawsonites have a lot of stories to tell and are happy to share them, so,

like a number of visiting artists and writers, he’s volunteered at CFYT-fm and has used his show to share some of the stories he’s recorded (with permission, of course) while visiting people. The stories can be funny, sad, scary, invented, true, personal, long or short, but they can’t be mean and they can’t be rumours.

Taken together with the portraits, there may someday be a book, but that’s a ways down the road.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

efir is a thick, tart, fermented drink, often made from milk, which I started drinking when we had our own dairy cow. I liked it, but my husband was crazy about it. He said it instantly energized him.

I liked that after I made an original batch, I could just keep adding raw milk without heating it and let it sit. In doing so, all the enzyme systems remained intact, as did the beneficial bacteria that

I discussed kefir with my friend Katherine Belisle, also a nutritionist. She has researched kefir and has experience making it using what’s called water kefir grains, which are lactic acid bacteria and yeast. The result is a drink that is slightly sweet and carbonated.

Water kefir is a great way for people who are allergic to dairy to reap all the rewards that kefir has to offer.

iNGREDIENTS: 1.5 litres water (not chlorinated); 1/2 cup water kefir grains; 1/3 to 1/2 cup sucanat or raw, organic sugar; 1/4 tsp baking soda (if you are using reverse osmosis or demineralized water); 3 dried apricots and small handful of raisins; half a lemon, sliced; metal or plastic strainer; metal, wooden or plastic spoon; sterilized 2 or 3L glass jar, or a Yukon Brewery Growler; and clean glass jars or bottles to store your completed kefir in.

Method: 1. Combine lukewarm water and sugar in the jar or bottle and shake until dissolved. Then add baking soda (optional), dried fruit and lemon chunks. Stir.

2. Add your water kefir grains.

3. Cap tightly if you prefer a carbonated drink, or leave cap loose if you prefer a flat drink.

4. Let sit at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours (the longer you ferment it the richer it will be in B vitamins/folic acid). My kids prefer it around 36 hours.

5. Using a strainer, pour the kefir into a jar with flavourings of your choice (grated ginger, vanilla extract, maple syrup, etc). Cap tightly. Enjoy within 24 hours.

6. To make another batch: Take the leftover grains and fruit from the strainer, remove the fruit and toss. Gently, briefly, rinse the grains under lukewarm water before proceeding as above.

You Have to be Badd to be Good

hat started off in 2010 as a one-off event showcasing Dawson City musical talent has now become a yearly ritual that rings in the summer season with a bang.

Cover Me Badd is a partnership between Dawson City Music Festival (DCMF) and the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC). The original intention was to showcase local musicians and give new summer workers and residents a chance to interact.

It was so popular in its first year that a second show was added a few weeks later. Now in its fourth year, Cover Me Badd continues to sell out, with a record breaking 175 people attending last year.

The rules are simple: musicians sign up with their existing band or assemble a new band, choose two cover songs to perform, then learn and perform a third cover song which is assigned to them by the Cover Me Badd organizers.

The bands then have a couple of weeks to work on their assigned cover song.

“The songs are intentionally selected to be a departure from the artists’ typical repertoire,” says DCMF producer and Cover Me Badd organizer Jenna Roebuck.

“They have ranged from everything from top-40 pop hits to rock classics, and the results have been songs that closely resemble the original, or are sometimes barely recognizable.”

The idea is to give the musicians an opportunity to push their skills.

“It’s all thought out,” says Matt Sarty, presentation and events coordinator at KIAC and also an

It’s a fun and crazy time, and I’ve never seen a bad performance,” he says.

Local musician Jim Taggart recalls the time that he and his band the Riverbends were assigned Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” “That’s not something we normally play in our standard repertoire,” he says with a chuckle.

“We dressed up in wigs and really glammed and hammed it up. It kept us on our musical toes.”

All eight spots for bands have been taken for this year’s show and competition.

“There’s a brand new group in the style of ‘60s girl bands and they’re one of the exciting bands that have formed to play this year,” Sarty says. Other bands in-

Proceeds from the event are split between DCMF and KIAC. KIAC will create a special fund to pay local musicians to open for visiting bands, while DCMF will pay for local musicians to play at the beer garden during this year’s Dawson City Musical Festival.

Cover Me Badd takes place Friday, May 31 in the KIAC ballroom.

Personal Websites A family or personal website was once an oddity. Now, they are a common practice and easy to set up and maintain.

A personal website allows you to easily keep in touch with farflung friends and relatives. You can post pictures and tie it to family blogs.

You only require three things for a web site: a domain name, web hosting, and web pages with text and images.

Domain names are the Internet name of a web site, such as www.

WhatsUpYukon.com. These are obtained through a domain registrar. In Canada, you can obtain a domain name ending in “.ca” for $10 to $15 per year.

There are several hundred registrars in Canada and a listing of these can be found at the Canadian Internet Registry Authority (www.cira.ca).

Web hosting is also easy to find.

Many companies offer the service

of hosting websites. Many of these are also domain registrars, allowing you to bundle the domain name and hosting together. An Internet search for domain hosting yields millions of results.

Some examples of North American hosting companies include HostPapa (Canadian), Black Dog and NetNation. However, there is no need for your site to be hosted in Canada – or even North America. Hosting costs between $40 and $100 per year.

When picking a company to host your website consider maximum traffic (in gigabytes), maximum size (in gigabytes) of your website in terms of how many pages and how many photos/videos you’ll want to load.

Another factor to consider will be the tools that different companies offer. There are many web page development tools to create a web page in a similar manner as a word processor. These tools convert what is called Hypertext

Markup Language into web pages so you don’t have to know how to write code. Also, word processors will allow you to create a document and save it as a web page.

They will also have tools to upload your web page files.

Hint: you will have to upload any pictures separately from the text file for your web page.

Look at other personal or family pages to determine what you want on yours. Don’t worry about not having too much content to include right away. You can add more material later. One thing you should include is an email address.

And, no, family and personal websites are not just for nerds.

Hákarl: A Dreadful Icelandic Delicacy by Mary Holuzbiec H

ákarl is an Icelandic fermented food delicacy made from the Greenland shark, which is indigenous to the waters of Iceland. It is traditionally prepared by beheading and gutting the shark and then burying the carcass in a shallow pit covered with sand. The carcass is left to ferment for six to twelve weeks. The flesh is then cut into strips and hung to dry for four to five months.

My first question upon learning of this rotten food was, “Why not eat the shark fresh?”

Here in North America we guard against eating rotten meat, yet our neighbors in latitude across the ocean go to great lengths to prepare a rotten delicacy.

Greenland sharks do not have urinary tracts and must secret their urine from their skin. As a result the Greenland shark is actually poisonous when fresh due to the high content of urea and trimethylamine oxide in its flesh. By allowing the shark to decay and its flesh to dry in the wind, the acid is removed from the flesh, or so they say.

Hákarl has quite a hardcore reputation in the culinary world. Chef Anthony Bourdain known for traveling to exotic locales and eating the relatively unheard of has described Hákarl as “the single worst, most disgusting and terrible tasting thing” he has ever eaten. This same delicacy made celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey vomit on TV when challenged to it eat.

My husband I enjoy traveling and tasting local cuisine is a big part of this experience.

We have tasted hoo hoo grubs in New Zealand prepared three different ways, maktak in the Arctic, and souse in the southern United States.

Last summer we traveled to Iceland. We had read about Hákarl extensively, but when we saw the cost in most restaurants tasting it was eliminated from our to do list. We are adventurous, but not stupid. Who would pay 40 Euros for a plate of rotten fish that they

might not be able to keep down?

One day we were shopping at the local grocery store which had every European delicacy imaginable when a pile of vacuumed sealed white hunks of meat caught my eye.

I quickly motioned to my husband. “Look! Can it be Hákarl?” A local Icelandic woman overheard our inquiry and quickly confirmed that this was indeed the dreaded delicacy. I asked her if she had tried it. She responded, “ Of course, you need to try it.”

We knew this was not an opportunity to pass up. We purchased a bottle of Brennivin, the local Schnapps as a mandatory chaser and anxiously returned to our apartment.

Upon opening the package the room immediately filled with the ammonia smell about which we had read so much. I attempted to ignore it and cut the shark up into tiny cubes resembling cheese like I had seen in pictures in countless tourist publications.

I looked at my husband and said, “ I love you, but you are trying it first.” He responded, “Oh no you don’t. We taste together.”

We each took the smallest of morsels and put it in our mouths. I took one bite and my whole being was filled with the most vile, non-palatable taste I have ever experienced.

We both decided that swallowing it would be a mistake. Hákarl could not possibly be good for you or ever leave your digestive tract.

You cannot get Hákarl anywhere but Iceland. I have tasted it and will never taste it again. I cannot imagine that it would taste good anywhere. That being said it is a food worth flying for. It is a flavour you will never ever forget. Brennivin, on the other hand, would taste great anywhere. You cannot get it anywhere, but Iceland. We would fly to Iceland for Brennivin in a heartbeat.

he shortest words usually have the longest definitions. The Merriam-Webster dictionary lists 18 uses for the word the. Reading through these, I noted that several of them apply to the Yukon. The second definition in the list applies nicely, in a poetic sense: “B. -- before nouns that designate natural phenomena or points of the compass, ie. the night is cold, the north.”

The 18 definitions seem to show that we use the word “the” to indicate when something is distinct.

This may be why we have used the word “the” in “the Yukon” since the territory was officially established in 1898. Most folks continue to say “the Yukon” to this day.

However, the name “the Yukon Territory” was officially changed to “Yukon” on April 1, 2003. It may come as a surprise to Yukoners that the “the” was officially dropped 10 years ago, but maybe that is just a reflection of Yukon time.

I did a quick and dirty email poll asking Whitehorse residents their thoughts about the name change. All but one of the respondents still say “the Yukon.” Since, according to an April 2013 Yukon Bureau of Statistics report, a whopping 40.4 per cent of working Yukoners are employed by one of the four levels of government in the territory, I thought it best to withhold the names of the respondents quoted here. Because, even if government workers say, “Yukon” by day, they, their spouses, and families say “the” by night. Anonymity will keep that 40.4% from experiencing “the” scrutiny at the workplace.

Why the Government of Yukon Dropped the The

I asked Joanna Lilley, senior communications adviser in the Executive Council Office of the Government of Yukon about the name change. While Lilley explained to me that there are no costs associated with the official name change, as Yukon Government “only make changes as opportunities come up,” I personally surmise that there are hidden costs in time spent adjusting documents, websites, signage, etc. Consider: since it costs $50 for one Yukon resident to register a personal name change with the Vital Statistics Office, and millions of dollars for a corporation (“Research in Motion” to change their name to “Blackberry”, for example), the Yukon Government name change costs must fall somewhere in between. Here are Lilley’s responses to my other questions.

ADR: When did YTG decide to remove “the” from “the Yukon” and why?

JL: The Government of Yukon recommends that departments use ‘Yukon’ rather than ‘the Yukon.’ This is based on the wording in the Yukon Act of 2003, which doesn’t use ‘the’ Yukon. We feel that this better reflects our status as a territory with province-like powers. We’re ‘Yukon’ just as Saskatchewan is Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia is Nova Scotia. We think it’s important to be consistent as a government.

ADR: What is the benefit of making this change?

JL: It helps put us on the same level as other jurisdictions (the provinces). We also think it’s important to be consistent as a government and it saves us time as the decision about whether to say ‘the’ Yukon or not has already been made.

ADR: Is YTG now YG? JL: Yes, our style guide says that our name is the Government of Yukon, not the Yukon Territorial Government… or any other variation. When we talk about the Government of Yukon informally, we write ‘the Yukon government’ with a small ‘g’.

Keeping the Stories Alive

Old Crow storyteller performs at Adäka festival in June

She feels privileged to be carrying on the family tradition and shares her grandmother’s stories whenever she can.

“I go to schools to give workshops and teach kids,” she says.

ammy Lee Josie was literally pushed onto the stage at 14 years old. She was watching her grandmother, Edith Josie, perform her family’s Vuntut Gwitchin stories at the Yukon International Storytelling Festival in 1998 when festival coordinator Louise Profeit-Leblanc asked if Tammy Lee knew Edith’s tales.

“Then my grandmother pointed at me and said ‘Your turn!’ And began pushing me from behind onto the stage,” Josie says.

She stood blinking in front of the audience of nearly 100 people.

“Luckily the lights were bright enough that I couldn’t see anybody,” she says.

She performed “Beaver and Muskrats” that day, which is still her favourite out of the 17 stories she knows. “(Beaver and Muskrats) is about greed and deceit,” Josie says. “It tells people, you need to be aware of these things. They’re not good – but it’s good to know about them.”

Audiences of all ages attend her performances. “Kids with balloons and painted faces come to listen, and young couples and lots of seniors,” she says. “The stories are PG-13, I tell people.”

Josie, 29, who now lives in Whitehorse, learned the stories while growing up in Old Crow. Her grandmother lived next door and would come over every night.

us a story, then we would say our prayers,” Josie says. “She never

She also tells stories at festivals around the territory.

“I enjoy meeting people and the other storytellers,” she says.

“It’s cool to see that there are people still passionate about this.”

Josie will be sharing her stories, including “Beavers and Muskrats” at the upcoming Adäka Cultural Festival.

The festival, launched in 2011, showcases Yukon First Nations arts and culture, and welcomes artists from as far afield as Greenland.

This year Adäka runs from June 21-27 at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre in Whitehorse.

pose. At this point the mother is both expending energy to nurse the piglets and fighting for her food.

When she starts to lift the piglets with her snout and toss them out of her way while eating, it’s our cue start weaning. Kali has been starting to toss her piglets.

Prior to weaning, the piglets had never been outside. But they needed to go out to get to their new pens. When the doors first opened they were scared, and then curious about everything.

Because we have had Kali for almost 4 years we knew she wouldn’t go far from her piglets.

In order to get them to leave the barn we gave Kali a small amount of feed just outside the door. They saw her eating and they felt it was safe enough to follow.

With the piglets following Kali and Kali following the feed bucket it was like a small parade. Once in their new pens, the piglets enjoyed the extra space by running around in circles at top speed.

Kali spent the day with her piglets, and returned to her pen by evening. They didn’t seem to

ll good things must come to an end and two days ago this was true for our piglets. It’s been eight weeks since they were born and we usually wean them between six and eight weeks. We determine the time based on how well the mom is dealing with them.

When pigs are eating they push and shove each other out of the way in order to claim food for themselves. For the less pushy pigs, there is a fair amount of running from one spot to another and the ones on the bottom end of the pecking order won’t grow as fast as the dominant pigs.

To allow each pig to eat in relative peace we try to keep the numbers in a pen to a maximum of three, thus they grow, instead of using their energy to jockey for position at the trough. The only exception is a mother with babies.

Piglets start to eat mostly out of curiosity. When they are about a month old they start to nibble at the feed in their mother’s dish.

But as they grow they need more than their mother’s milk so they start to eat solid food with pur-

I

t was warm for opening day of the season but I was not going to complain. My dad, Spike, and I sat in the only patch of grass tall enough to hide in.

The sun was on our backs and our German Shepherd lay between us.

The Hudson Bay’s tide was far out and it would be hours before the geese by the water’s edge would be pushed in.

For an 8-year-old boy, waiting was not really my favourite thing.

We talked about what would happen when the wind changed and the tide pushed the birds inland.

“They will fly straight over us then circle back to the tidal edge” my dad said. “When they do we will get one chance to get a few shots, hopefully we will get one or two geese.”

They never did fly over.

The warm south breeze and clear skies didn’t change as hoped. The fall colours were starting to show themselves in

small patches, but this was no fall day. A drake mallard landed in a pond left by the receding tide about 200 metres away — green head glistening. I was weary to try to try get him so we decided to leave the gun and get as close as we could to have a better look.

It was my third year living with the man who took me in as his own, right from the day he came to Red Deer, Alberta to move us back to my mother’s home town of Churchill, Manitoba. He was teaching me the love of the outdoors, and this was a lesson.

As we approached the mallard, the sandy beach didn’t have many places to get cover and our green camouflage was not going to help with the light brown sand.

I ducked low behind a small sandy ridge and started to crawl over to my next view point. Catching the odd glimpse as the wind blew the grass from side to side, I could see him swimming in cir-

cles. I looked for a closer spot to get a look at the drake; there was no cover and the pool was slightly downhill from me.

“Get on your belly and move slow, don’t crawl directly toward him,” my dad whispered to me.

After about a minute of this I was 50 metres away and could see him swimming gracefully, but when he noticed me he was gone as fast as his little wings could take him.

I spent the rest of the day stalking birds up and down the beach from pool to pool. This was more fun than sitting still and getting a tan.

I heard my dad say, “Hunt with your kids, not for them.”

I do not remember who he was talking to or why, but the phrase stuck in my head. Every hunt he ever went on, I was by his side, and still today we take our girls on as many adventures as we can as a family.

or the last week I have been heading out to my rooftop to see the constellation Hercules and the bright globular cluster that resides there. Even just using binoculars the view is amazing.

Also found in the same region is the constellation of Lyra, which holds the planetary Ring Nebula.

It looks like a perfect smoke ring floating in space. Though not visible with binoculars, the view through a telescope is one of the most beautiful sights in the night sky.

The constellation Cygnus the Swan, also known as the Northern Cross, offers up some of the most impressive views with binoculars or telescopes of any size.

Through binoculars there are star clusters and star chains that seem to make a road map that explores this magnificent constellation.

Looking through a telescope there is so much to see in and around Cygnus. I always start my journey with the bright binary star Alberio. Found at the bottom of the cross, this is one of the night skies’ most magnificent blue-gold stars. You will need a small telescope to see the split between the two stars.

Moving to the top of the cross, or the tail of the swan, depending on how you look at the constellation, there awaits celestial treasure.

First locate the bright star Deneb and then slowly scan the surrounding area. Under clear skies you can see the North American Nebula, a large diffuse emis-

sion nebula. It can be seen using binoculars and gets its name from its shape. Using a wide-field telescope it is a marvel to see. A gas cloud makes up the basic shape of the nebula, with a field of stars sprinkled in front.

All of these constellations are more visible in the darker fall skies, so observing them now is a bonus.

The long days of light and disappearance of the night sky does not mean that there is nothing to observe.

The Moon with its craters, mountain ranges, and vast lunar seas offers plenty to the observer. Using a filter on your binoculars or telescope can make a big difference in boosting the contrast.

There will be planets for observing, too. Venus has come out from the Sun’s glare to move into the evening skies.

Saturn is up high and still visible for an hour or so in the late night/early morning. On June 12 Mercury is furthest away from the Sun, approximatel 24 degrees to the east in the evening sky.

You will be able to see this little planet with binoculars or a small telescope.

On June 23 there is a full moon that is also the largest moon of the year. They are calling it the Solstice Super Moon.

Playing with Fire Helena Hrubesova starts fire dancing and hula hoop lessons in Whitehorse

or most, the muted whoosh of fire flying inches past one’s head would be disconcerting, but for Helena Hrubesova, it’s all in a day’s play.

A native of the Czech Republic, the now-Yukon resident has found much more than a hobby in fire dancing, poi and hula hooping, and this summer she hopes to share the joy of these performance sports with anyone who’s interested.

Hula hooping is not just an activity to keep children busy. Hrubesova says that hula hooping is a sport that is enjoying a nearlyworldwide revival since the ‘70s.

“I love to dance and I love to work out, and this is all connected,” she says. “It’s very good for working out your whole body, not just your core, but the core especially.”

She often hula hoops indoors as well as out, bringing electric hoops that change colours to live music shows.

“You can do it in the bars, which is kind of cool,” she says.

“I don’t like just sitting down and doing nothing, I like to dance.

Dancing with the hula hoops, it feels like the hoop is almost like my partner, so dancing with it is like dancing with someone, but alone. And going out in the summer it’s the same, I like to be doing something.”

Fire dancing, either with a hoop or fire-poi, which is swinging two tethered, flaming weights, is particularly exhilarating.

“Fire dancing is especially cool because of the sound of the fire, it’s kind of primeval,” she says.

Hrubesova discovered her talent for hula hooping about two years ago, after watching a dancer at a wedding in Skagway.

“She had a lot of hoops to try so I tried and found that I could do it and so I started hula hooping and totally started to love it – I couldn’t stop,” Hrubesova says.

Since then, she has been practicing both hula and poi non-stop, and will be open for business on several occasions throughout the summer.

The first opportunity will be at the ShipShape event in Whitehorse on May 26. Hrubesova will be performing both hula hooping and poi, and teaching the basics for free to anyone interested. If people try it out and want to learn more, they can sign up for her classes, which will run from midJune to August in Shipyards Park.

Hrubesova plans for a twiceweekly class that will include warm-up, cardio and choreography, with a performance at one of the final Arts in the Park events.

“It won’t be just working out and learning for themselves, but at the end of the summer they can show what they’ve learned to their families and friends,” she says. “I like to see results and show it off and I think other people will like to see that, too.”

While there has long been an underground hula hooping, poi and firedancing scene in Whitehorse, Hrubesova notes that it seems to be relatively insular, with only certain people performing.

She credits Yukoner Noli East-

mure as one of her main inspirations. A fire-dancer and hula hooper herself, Eastmure started the Yukon Hula Hoopers Facebook page, as well as the Yukon Fire Stars with Mark Peschke, a firedancing company-for-hire. “[Noli Eastmure] told me she wanted to do the hula hooping classes but never got around to it, so she’s excited that I’m going to do it,” Hrubesova says.

She says that many people have already expressed an interest in learning the sport.

“It’s one thing that is kind of missing here,” she says, “There are young people who want to do the same as me, they want to dance and learn new tricks and have something to do when they are just hanging out. Just from talking to people who have seen me dancing in the bar, a lot of girls... are coming to me and asking me if I am doing classes. Last summer a lot of people asked me that, too.”

Hrubesova, who is a lawyer, says that the hula hooping, fire

dancing and poi are great for anyone just looking to exercise in a new and fun way.

She will also be offering courses in the basics of poi and hula hooping through City of Whitehorse programs at the Canada Games Centre.

Catch Hrubesova at the ShipShape event at Shipyards Park on May 26, at the Sunstroke Music Festival on June 21 and 22, and at any show by the band Off the Menu, where she provides a visual aspect to their soundtrack.

A tent is a classic example of “You only get what you pay for.”

I

f you are interested in sheephunting or high country backpacking, then your tent may be the most important item you will ever own. Suffer through bad weather and your attention will quickly be drawn to the difference between low and high quality tents. Over the years, I’ve seen and heard about a number of tents badly damaged or destroyed by a sudden onset of Yukon weather in the alpine. Sometimes it’s because they simply weren’t set up properly, but lower quality to start with is the usual culprit.

A lower quality tent is fine for mild camping, but it simply cannot take the stress and strain of high country weather. The poles might flex and break or the seams may split. Either of these results will leave you in a true survival situation.

When shopping for a tent, decide the size and purpose of your ideal tent and then investigate them. Study the catalogues, go online to dealers and review specific tents and comments from owners. Speak to tent owners who have tents similar to what you are considering – everybody is happy to talk about their equipment.

Usually a 3-person backpackers’ tent is tight for three, but good for two. Increased size means increased weight and more money spent usually means less weight, whatever the capacity.

A tent needs to be simple, strong and quick to set up. Anything less is no good in severe weather conditions. Practice setting up your tent so you can do it in the dark because that happens.

Cheaper tents often have a lower number of folds or less stitching at the seams and the zippers and toggles are sometimes metal when they should be nylon or another synthetic material.

Poles should be a constant diameter, lightweight, shock-corded aluminum as they are lighter and slip through the pole tubes or clips much more easily than the heavy, brittle, ferrule equipped fibreglass poles that come with lower priced tents.

Once you’ve bought your tent, be prepared to always peg it down. Tie a 10 to 12 inch shockcord loop onto the peg loops to better allow the tent to work in the wind. Lay medium size rocks on the shock-cord loops to prevent the pegs pulling out and the tent

blowing away. I have returned to camp more than once to find the other tent upside down and full of snow or a half-mile away on the alpine meadow.

Vestibules, which are like a covered porch for a tent, are essential for storing back-packs, boots and wet gear storage out of the weather and also out of the sleeping area. Vestibules do bring a slight increase in tent weight.

However, when conditions require it, your back-pack stove can cook your simple meals inside the vestibule and some of that welcome heat will come into the tent.

Tents come in all shapes, sizes, prices and a tent selected for high country back-packing is one of the classic examples of, “You only get what you pay for.”
