Just another awkward drop-by moment. From left to right: Me, A, Zoey Pancake, G.

A

few days after I arrived back in Whitehorse in November 2008 I ran into Janine Aberson while grocery shopping with my mom. She invited me to Aubyn Russell’s birthday party and I went. Aubyn and I weren’t particularly close at the time despite being Grade 3 classmates in Takhini Elementary. When I arrived, Georgia Sauve answered the door and I joined the birthday festivities. I met Georgia once previously, but I didn’t remember. Funny Story. Ask her. Despite my lack of Pictionary proficiency, G and A saw fit to keep me around. I became a fixture — showing up for endurance-testing hikes, anger-inducing cross-crib games, and brunch. They seem to enjoy my company most of the time, or are good at pretending to. Currently they live about two blocks away from me and they usually have leftovers. So when I decided to join the revolution I knew they would come in handy. I’m speaking of the Drop-by Revolution; if you haven’t heard of it, don’t worry, it is only in its

infancy. Our goal is to replace the stuffy, overly-formalized conventions of social interaction with a new paradigm — and by “new” I mean “old-fashioned, but worth bringing back.” As far as revolutions go, this one is easy to get behind. You don’t need a dogmatic political ideology or an AK-47. All you need is at least one friend, a mode of transportation (feet will often do) and a willingness to impose yourself on others. With those three essential ingredients in-hand all you have to do is pick a target (the aforementioned friend) and show up at his or her front door, expecting to be entertained. No warning text. No phone call. No nothing. Though it is not strictly considered essential equipment for a drop-by, a couple of beers in a bag are always well met. Sure, the naysayers will raise the unimaginative question: “What if you show up at an awkward or embarrassing moment?” There’s no way to get around it, this is a possibility. But having said that, there are a few things

to keep in mind. It is only awkward or embarrassing for you if you detect the vibe. So if you want to avoid such social peccadilloes remember the importance of picking targets that can fake enthusiasm upon your arrival — like G and A. However, there is another school of thought that denies such situations should be avoided in the first place. If fact, you add a whole new level of gamesmanship to the art of the drop-by if your goal is to cause, rather than avoid, awkward encounters. Ten points if you interrupt sex. With the modern proliferation of communication devices, and the tendency of people to use them excessively, the spontaneity of the drop-by feels like a relic of centuries gone by. But aren’t we losing something if we schedule all our socializing as rigidly as our dental appointments? Members of the revolution suggest that we are losing our ability and/or desire to improvise — to go with the flow. So put on your sneakers, raise your bag of Pilsner and go disrupt somebody’s evening. Trust me comrades, it’s for their own good.

A Novel Idea

Nine-year-old Maible Matrishon gets started on her writing career

ith such a literary family, it was only a matter of time before Maible Matrishon published her very own book. The Grade 4 student at Golden Horn Elementary School in Whitehorse wrote, photographed and self-published Island Experiences as an e-book in February. Recently, as a tenth birthday present, her mother Moe Boksa and step-dad Ian Usher surprised her with a paperback version of the book. They also created a website for her to market her book and where she can blog regularly. “I thought the paperback and website were pretty cool,” Matrishon says. “And it’s a step up from just a Kindle edition.” Having the finished product in her hand and on the screen is exciting, but writing it was her favourite part. “I also like reading it over and over again — to see all that I can change and all that’s really good.” Island Experiences is a fictionalized account of life on Bocas Del Toro, a private island off the coast of Panama, where she and her family have spent the last two winters. The novel follows a girl a little older than Maible as she frolics with sea creatures, enjoys local fruit smoothies, and as the back cover says, “experiences the firsthand joys and pitfalls of buying a private island.” The impetus for writing Island Experiences came as a result of a project she worked on while in the Caribbean. Usher has self-published two memoirs, A Life Sold and Paradise Delayed, and Boksa is writing a series of children’s books as well as Cranberries and Cordwood: The Adventures of Dog Sled Girl about her life in the Yukon. For the moment, however, the spotlight is on Matrishon. Yukon Education Minister Scott Kent recently commented on her “impressive creativity and energy.” “My friends think it’s pretty cool too,” Matrishon says. And so do their parents. After several of her friends’ families asked about publishing their own children’s work, Boksa and Usher set up a new publishing venture for young writers called Fledgling Authors (FledglingAuthor. com). They offer e-book and paperback publishing, as well as basic website services. Matrishon may very well be a repeat client. “I like writing stories and I’d like to do more books,” she says. Agatha Christie wrote nearly 100 works and has sold approximately four billion copies worldwide in many translations. And that was before the digital publishing revolution. A Klondike Korner with Dan Davidson

Young Performers Are Stepping up to the Microphone

PHOTO: Dan Davidson

Christopher Tom Tom has performed at almost all of the coffee house evenings over the last couple of years.

T

his year’s monthly open mic/ coffee house gatherings in the Odd Fellows Hall ballroom in Dawson City have featured an increasing number of young performers, who are filling up the set list during the first hour of the evening. Some of them are taking individual lessons in guitar, recorder or ukulele. Others are part of programs at the Robert Service School, which include ukes and recorders, but also junior and senior rock bands and a senior choir. At recent events we have seen fiddlers, a recorder group, a ukulele group and a couple of duo acts from the same age group. The senior rock band borrowed the lead singer from the junior rock band for part of their set.

In April a quartet from the senior choir performed some folkish pop tunes (reading the lyrics off their cell phones in a 21st century touch) while one of them took to the microphone as a solo performer and then came back for the May event. Christopher Tom Tom began to

study the guitar about three years ago, learning to read music and play the notes rather than just chording and strumming. He has performed on every evening for the last couple of years. His sister, Emma, has also soloed on her recorder. Jack Amos, who successfully pulled off his musical, Jellicle Cats, a couple of weekends ago, has also been a regular at these events — first as a fiddler, and more recently by reciting old fashioned poems (you know, the ones that rhyme) and singing. There are still lots of older folks at open mic night, but it’s good to see a younger generation coming up and contributing. The last of the indoor series was held on May 4. In June the evenings will move to the Front Street Gazebo, weather permitting, for an outdoor summer series. After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

The Amazing Mr. Leech

Ryan Leech performs, teaches and speaks at Shipshape event May 26 by Glenda Koh

M

about what the human body is capable of.” Leech draws upon his multifaceted experience to reach out to young people through a presentation called the Trials of Life. Aimed towards school-aged children and young adults, it intersperses demonstration riding with thought provoking dialogue. “The riding is just a great way for kids to connect with me,” he says. “It’s very visual so I can quickly earn some trust and respect and with that they’re a little more open to listening to what I have to say and sharing some stories. “The show isn’t for people to get into riding bikes, but for people to find their own thing.” Leech tackles such topics as: how to approach decisions, define success, deal with obstacles and criticism, and finally, the importance of determining their own potential. “It’s often hard for people to discover their passions and interests and take some personal risks rather than just following the status quo,” he says. “My story is pretty unique and I’m just encouraging students to find their own unique story.” Leech is also certified as an Integral Coach who facilitates

ountain biker Ryan Leech is the first to concede he’s had a great life so far. A professional rider his entire adult life, his career now combines cycling with teaching yoga and inspiring adults and kids to find their own life path. Whitehorse will have the opportunity to meet Leech on May 26. He’ll be the showcase performer at the City of Whitehorse’s new active living event on the waterfront, Shipshape. Leech began his career riding trials, where bikers navigate a series of obstacles. He now makes his living, in part, by demonstrating bike skills through live performances and video. Leech admits that while competition comprised his early career, it wasn’t his ideal. “I enjoyed the more creative kind of riding, creating video segments and being a performer,” he says. It was competition and curiosity that drove him to excel. “I always wanted to be the one to learn the new trick and was the first to do it,” he says. “That was a big motivating factor, combined with my curiosity

and assists clients in navigating change and decisions. “Coaching arose because of my own struggles in trying to figure out what to do in my life beyond riding.” Leech has also been practicing yoga for most of his career. “I was so much more familiar and connected to my body through the yoga practice and through the exploration of how my body worked,” he says, explaining how yoga helped him develop a unique style of riding. He also hosts cycling retreats that combine mountain biking and yoga, called Ride and Reach Retreats, and recently released a yoga for cyclists DVD. Leech, who is based in the Vancouver area, is looking forward to returning to Yukon. “It’s just a wonderful place to ride, every day is a different ride and place to explore.” Ryan Leech will be the featured guest at the City of Whitehorse’s event Shipshape on May 26. He will conduct a yoga class (no mat required), and will do a mountain bike performance at 3:30 p.m. at Shipyards Park. Glenda Koh is an environmental coordinator with the City of Whitehorse.

Reaching the Hearts of Children in Need

Yukon-based charity seeks to raise $40,000 for Haitian children. by Tamara Neely

H

aving a child die in your arms — that’s something that can really change how you view what’s important. As soon as she graduated from high school in Whitehorse, Yukoner Morgan Wienberg flew to Haiti to offer her help to the thousands of children who had become displaced from their families during the earthquake of 2010. In 2011 she founded a nonprofit organization called Little Footprints, Big Steps (LFBS) to continue her efforts. Two years later — in January of this year — she felt the despair of holding a child she loved in her arms as he quietly died from Hepatitis B. She realized that no matter how much suffering she sees, Haiti is where she wants to be, and helping children one-byone to escape abusive situations is what she wants to do. Little Footprints, Big Steps has

helped 52 children leave abusive orphanages, and 15 kids leave the streets to reunite with their families. “The biggest thing I want for these kids is to believe in themselves and know they are part of the society and to know that they are valued — to be cared about and to care about others,” Wienberg says. She experienced so many setbacks and challenges, yet there were so many success stories, too. And then Judelin died. She had done everything she could and he still died. She had known Judelin for a year, when he was a 15-year-old street kid. Angry. Aggressive. Solitary. Cold. But she knew the impact that compassion and love can have. It can melt away the hate, leaving warmth. She took him under the wing

Specialty Travel What is VolunTourism? VolunTourism is a Tourism trend in which travellers do voluntary work to help communities or the environment in the places they are visiting Here are some things to think about when considering VolunTourism: • Choose a project that follows your passions. Your experience will be much more satisfying if it is something you feel strongly about, like protecting animals from extinction or helping those less fortunate. • Consider the type of work you may be asked to do and decide if your physical condition or mental skills are a match. • You may be doing volunteer work in a culture that is foreign to you. It is important that you are able to respect and accept the views of the people you are helping. • Prepare and learn as much as possible about the culture and language you’ll be immersed in. It will enrich your experience. • If you wish to photograph the local people, please ask permission. Some cultures believe that picture taking is a violation of their beliefs. • Choose a country you want to visit as you may want to combine a vacation with your volunteer experience. Exploring in your free time will add to your knowledge, adding to your ability to be of help. • Visit your public health office and protect yourself with all the necessary shots and vaccines. • Protect yourself and your travel experience with Travel Insurance. If you are looking for ways to make a difference in your World, please feel free to stop in and see us - we welcome your questions. Judelin, in front of his house in January. He died at 4:10 a.m. on January 30. of LFBS and he began to open up, mentor the littler kids and show affection. He also reconnected with his mother, who had abused him. And then on New Year’s Eve he fell ill. Feverish and vomiting, she took him from doctor to doctor in the small town where they lived, trying to find someone who could diagnose him. Then she took him on a six-hour bus trip to Port-auPrince to find a hospital, cradling his weak body on her lap. She sought out a doctor who cared, at a hospital with the equipment to treat him. She slept under a crib on the floor of his hospital room for days. She would perch on the side of his bed and put her arms around him so he’d know she was near, her tears dripping on his head. “I had one hand on the top of his head and my other hand on his chest and I was crying above his face, I said, ‘Judelin, can you hear me?’ And he grunted,” she says. “And then I said, ‘Do you know I love you?’ And I didn’t hear anything.” She held him, and his life slipped away. She was devastated. But Judelin did not die alone in the street; even his mother had come to see him. “I’ve been traumatized over and over again and I’ve never really taken the time to stop — I just keep going,” Wienberg says. “I always try to have this perspective that there are so many problems and so much suffering, that you just have to do something about it.” Now, it’s hard for her to leave Haiti and come for a visit in the Yukon. In Haiti she is making deep connections with children and families in need. She has seen children on the brink of death rejuvenate with life, and she has seen children so full of life succumb to death. With financial support LFBS is rescuing children from orphanages that are keeping them nearto-death in order to attract international aid. It is also supporting povertystricken families in rural areas generate sustainable methods of earning a livelihood. These families do not have enough food to feed their children or pay school fees. They think that their children will have a better chance at life if they live in an orphanage. “A corrupt local will go to these countryside communities, where

there is less education, extreme poverty and no access to aid and will say they have an orphanage, or will say they’ll take the kid to the city and put them in school,” Wienberg says. “They’re abused, starved, sold, put into slavery and the parent never knows. The sicker the kid in the orphanage looks, the more food and clothes and other things foreigners will bring, which for the owner of the orphanage means greater wealth.” LFBS is seeking donations to raise $40,000 by July to help with this program. There are also opportunities for people interested in volunteering in Haiti. Morgan Wienberg’s mother, Karen Wienberg, coordinates volunteers. “We try to match the skills, abilities and interests of our volunteers with the needs of our children and families — whether it be in our transitional/education safe house, outreach in various geographic locations, trade training, medical interventions, educational assistance, etc.,” Karen says. A Number of Positive Impacts Little Footprints, Big Steps’ yearly operating budget is $114,000 for the three programs they run: family outreach; transitional safe house; and advocacy. While two percent of their budget pays for administrative needs such as money wire transfers to Haiti, 98 per cent directly supports the children and their families. Here are the numbers: • 105 children are going to school because LFBS is paying the school fees. • 67 children have reunited with their families and the families are receiving support to create a sustainable livelihood. • 14 children left abusive orphanages/street life and live full-time in the LFBS safe house. • 10 full-time Haitian staff are employed with LFBS. • 5 parents are receiving advocacy support to help them find trafficked children. • 4 volunteer Haitians support LFBS. • 3 homeless families are receiving housing support for one year as well as support to create a sustainable livelihood.

Founder of Little Footprints Big Steps describes a success story in Haiti by Morgan Wienberg

“S

street corner and watched the world walk past him in February 2012. He was 15 years old. He’d shine shoes to make enough money for the day. He’d spend nights on a piece of cardboard, laid out on the concrete ground under a bar’s entrance. But his outer, silent shell hid a vulnerability: he longed for stability and safety. One night, I saw the boy sitting on a divider in the middle of a busy Haitian street. I sat down beside him and saw his eyes were filled with tears and he was holding a small photo in his hand. He showed me the photo, it was a young woman. “My mother,” Crizilov grunted, “She died when I was 3. If she’d been here, I would have gone to

o have you seen any progress?” This is the question I’m most often asked when people learn I live in Haiti. Vague as it is, I feel this question can be answered in the story of a child named is Crizilov. His dark eyes were filled with anger and pain as he stood on the

school. She wouldn’t have let me live in the streets.” The tough, street-hardened teenager fell into my lap and cried. I became Crizilov’s legal guardian and he moved into our safe house. The illiterate teenager was eager to go to school — so he did. But he was self-conscious and insecure; only once everyone else went to sleep was he willing to study and practice the alphabet. Yet after five months, Crizilov was writing in French and tackling 3-digit math problems. Eventually, Crizilov decided to introduce me to his aunt. We pulled up to a dirt road just minutes from the street corner Crizilov had lived on. He stopped abruptly on the side of the road and pointed me in the direction of his aunt. Later, showing me two dark scars on his forearm, Crizilov confided that he’d once lived with his aunt, but his uncle had forced him to stay at home and sell produce instead of going to school. Crizilov had been beaten and burned for helping himself to food, and was constantly on the receiving end of his uncle’s aggression — leaving him and the entire family in a constant state of fear. Crizilov and I began to visit his aunt regularly. Soon she shared stories about how her husband’s abuse sent her children to the hospital, and how neighbours had to tear him off of her. Yet she stayed with him because she couldn’t afford her own house. Little Footprints Big Steps supporters — consisting primarily of Yukoners — came through. We rented a home for Crizilov’s aunt and her children. One month later, Crizilov moved in with his family. He finally had his own home. In April 2013, I sat beside

Crizilov at his aunt’s coffee table. She tutored him, urging the teenager to correct his math questions. Across the candle-lit table sat Crizilov’s cousin, reciting her history homework out loud. Glancing up from his math notebook, Crizilov caught my eye. I felt overwhelmed with pride. A huge, open smile spread across Crizilov’s face and I could see happiness in his eyes. He confidently took a piece of chalk and started writing on a small chalkboard his aunt had pasted onto their wall. After one semester of school, the former street boy had achieved above

average marks and skipped up to second grade. Fourteen months after I’d found this boy sleeping on a street corner – 12 months after he’d sobbed in my lap – Crizilov had rediscovered himself, his confidence and his family.

McLarnon and her husband, Ukrainian guitarist Alexx Kretov, who met while McLarnon was visiting Russia. “Russia is a very strong country,” she says. “And it can be a very strong drug for those who have been there. It can pull you in and consume you — that’s what happened to me. I’ve lived there five times already, in four different places.” When McLarnon was a member of Yukon Women in Music, she created a cappella songs about Russia, often in Russian. She kept singing when she moved to Moscow and worked with musicians there.

Antigravity is a CD by Ummagma, comprised of former Yukoner Shauna McLarnon and her husband Alexx Kretov. “In fact, I was working with three different musicians, all in different directions – one was more poprock (similar to The Cranberries, for instance), one was more Britpop, one was more folk and Celtic oriented,” McLarnon says. Then, in 2003, at an acoustic guitar concert, McLarnon met Kretov and fell in love and into musical collaboration. “Our meeting was one of those rare you-just-know-it moments in life,” she says.

As Ummagma (a nod to Pink Floyd’s album, Ummagumma), Kretov provides the instruments, recording and videos while McLarnon supplies the lyrics and management. They collaborate on composition and vocals. Last July, they released two albums, Ummagma and Antigravity, simultaneously on the Internet from their home in the Ukraine. “This is more than just East meets West,” says McLarnon of their sound. “It is something totally new and unique with a sense of bliss and sometimes beautiful melancholy.” The songs are built around Kretov’s guitars and their contrasting vocals, with other instruments, sounds and effects layered in. Like the guitars, the vocals are reverbed, processed, filtered and layered in like the other instruments. The result is a sound merging folk, European jazz and even classical elements and is similar to Sigur Rós, The xx and some of David Bowie’s instrumentals. Now based in western Ukraine, Ummagma have been using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Youtube and Reverbnation, to draw attention to

their work.
“We’ve gotten in touch with bloggers, podcasters and radio stations; we like to give the music a chance to be heard,” says McLarnon. “In order to find our audience, we have intentionally reached out to countries that are often overlooked and in ways that are often not fully explored — it seems that is what sets us apart and has created such a buzz surrounding Ummagma in just a short amount of time.” Both Ummagma and Antigravity are available on the Ummagma’s Bandcamp website as pay-whatyou-want. Their website, ummagma.com has links to their videos. Their SoundCloud site is also streaming remixes of their songs by other artists. Outstanding Tracks: on Ummagma: “Rotation” and “Human Factor;” on Antigravity: “Live and Let Die.” Barry “Jack” Jenkins keeps close tabs on the Yukon music scene. Seeking Beervana with Lara Lewis

Beer Advertising Deconstructed Self-mockery, potty humour and sexism

S

ometimes it’s hard for me to believe that beer companies spend billions of dollars each year marketing products that should sell itself. But people need to be swayed by the next best thing or conscripted back into brand loyalty after straying. Put enough money into marketing, and a relatively unknown beer like Stella Artois can sweep the globe and become the uber-cool beer choice of the beautiful people. Beer promoters often appeal to our primal instincts. For example, there is a deep-rooted advertising union between beer and sports: National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, Boat Racing, NASCAR and even Bass Fishing. Heck, Molson-Coors (and the Molson brothers) own the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. Most beer commercials walk that sketchy line of male selfmockery; slapstick, potty humour;

and camaraderie — with just a splash of sexism a la Spinal Tap’s “What’s wrong with being sexy?” Apparently mass-produced North American lager is like a “shower in the back of your throat” that transports you and your male buddies on a logo-festooned beer plane full of hot stewardesses to an exclusive party on a desert island. It’s like being beaten over the head repeatedly with an adolescent stick; but it’s a golden formula for advertisers. Aside from sports, every music festival I’ve been to is sponsored by a brewing company. Coachella Music Festival near Palm Springs is no different. Heineken is the sponsor, but the premium price of $9 per beer seriously reduces beer intake, and, happily, the drunken obnoxious factor. The desert heat also promotes more water consumption than beer. Plus, you can’t see all six musical stages from the

beer gardens, so you’re forced to go for a walk. The result is a non-sloppy, surprisingly peaceful music festival; quite the feat considering it draws 70,000 attendees per day. Maybe it’s the European influence, but Heineken USA bucked the typical North American beer marketing trend when it created its Most-Interesting-Man-in-theWorld character to market the Dos Equis brand. Sure, he had young females admirers, but this older man’s lifestyle of adventure and success was intriguing. The character “can speak French… in Russian” and is “the life of parties he never attended.” The advertisements first ran in the United States in 2006 and were correlated to a significant increase in sales. It was an atypical, intelligent and effective advertising campaign — the kind I’d like to see

Like Singing For Family Except a record deal is on the line.

t’s 5:30 p.m. on Saturday April 27, and the staff of Asian Central Store are preparing for tonight’s show. Pinoy New Talent Singing Idol, a nation-wide contest sponsored by Filipino broadcaster TV 5, has included Whitehorse in its 2013 season tryouts, and the local grocery/ restaurant is the event’s headquarters. Tonight’s event will be the first of five monthly tryouts, after which the local winner will head south to compete against finalists from eight other Canadian cities. The national champion wins a round trip for two to the Philip-

pines; an exclusive record contract with Viva Records; appearances in TV 5 programming; a condo in Manila and 50,000 pesos (about CAD$1,200) spending money. By 6:30 p.m. Asian Central is packed. There’s approximately 50 people seated in the main dining room. The karaoke machine plays a reel of extreme sports wipeouts as a young woman softly croons along to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” by Gloria Gaynor. Trays of fried milkfish with mounds of steamed rice and bowls of pork bone soup come steaming out of the kitchen carried by a waitress, who sidesteps a pair of

“Singing contests are a staple in the Philippines,” Peron says. “We have them in every nook and cranny of the country of all our 7,107 islands. That’s 7, 107 at low tide.” The first contestant, Rene Boy Minguito, steps to the microphone dressed in a grey cardigan with white shirt and bowtie. His song is “This is the Moment,” written for the Broadway production Jekyll & Hyde and recently performed by Susan Boyle and Donnie Osmond on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. “This is the Moment” is perfect for a singing contest. It begins slowly, building with each “this is

wild-eyed toddlers with the grace of Ginger Rogers. The show still hasn’t started and Ailene Gayangos, the store’s owner, looks anxious. “We’re waiting for one more contestant who was working until six, ” she says. “That’s pretty much life in the Yukon, eh?” The judges – all Caucasian – smile politely from a plastic banquet table facing the stage: Elayne Sayney, Dennis Pederson, Dennis Beaudoin, Mollie Roy and Whitehorse’s Mayor Dan Curtis. At last Gayangos gets the nod to start, passing the mic to MC Ernesto Peron.

Contest winner Rene Boy Minguito croons for an appreciative crowd at Whitehorse’s first PNT Singing Idol competition. The restaurant Asian Central is hosting the competition/show every third Saturday through to August. the moment,” and nearly reaches a climax before ripping you back down, and building you back to another “this is the moment,” all over again. If properly executed, the final refrain pops like a cherry bomb. cont’d on page 15...

Like Singing For Family ... cont’d. Minguito knows his way around his selection. At first, there are just a few hoots from a group of ladies at a table closest to the stage. Then a few teenage girls begin shouting and clapping in the back corner. He throws his right arm wide, with a final, “this is the mooooooment…” as the room bursts into applause. Marichu King is up next with a smoldering rendition of “Stars” by Grace Potter, a song about a woman who can’t look at the stars because they remind her of an exlover. It’s got a longish guitar solo in the middle that can spell sudden death for those with low stage presence. King carries it well. The room glitters with camera flashes as she walks off the stage. “I didn’t expect the judges to be all Canadians,” she says laughing. “I thought some would be Filipinos, so I was really nervous.” Next up is Jerda Mae Bungay, a teenager who has been singing since she was a child. Her song is “Stand Up For Love” by Destiny’s Child. Like any song touched by Beyoncé Knowles, it’s full of flying pitch changes and soulfully drawn out vowel sounds, the kind that make church in the American south at least an hour longer than church everywhere else. She nails it.

The last performer is Jennifer Trinidad. She’s chosen “Saving All My Love For You,” a Whitney Houston power ballad. It’s soulful but not too tough. She leaves the stage beaming. “This was kind of a new life experience for me,” she says. “But it felt like singing for family. These are my family here.” After each contestant sings one more song it’s up to the mayor to announce the winner. There’s some light banter: “Queen is the greatest band that ever lived,” he reveals, and then reads the results: Minguito, bow tied master of the moment, is crowned champion. He accepts his $100 gift certificate to Asian Central, a special box for accessing various Filipino television channels, and a bouquet of flowers. “I am feeling great right now,” he says. “It’s my dream to be a part of this contest.” PNT Singing Idol 2013 Whitehorse qualifying shows will take place every third Saturday of the month until August at Asian Central Store, located at 210C Ogilvie Street. Max Leighton is a freelance writer who promises not to let journalism die.

A moment, Minguito will not soon forget. The evening’s champion is honoured with a bouquet and congratulations from his competitors.

Start it up! PHOTO: Barry Gray, Warrior Games

Steve Sxwithul’txw, centre, is the host/producer of the TV series Warrior Games. Sxwithul’txw came to Whitehorse in April to film an episode of the show, which features Whitehorse residents Jonah Caesar, left, and Elias Park.

E

lders’ teachings are about life skills and many of them translate well to sports: how to take care of yourself, how to eat right and how to survive. The concept behind the TV series Warrior Games is to bring sport back to where it all began: when elders passed down these wonderful games, both traditional and contemporary, to the youth. Warrior Games will be broadcast on Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) in the fall. Steve Sxwithul’txw, from the Penelakut First Nation, is the host and producer of the series. I talked to Steve about the show and his experience filming an episode in Whitehorse. Sheldon McRae: What’s the importance of featuring Aboriginal youth in Warrior Games? Steve Sxwithul’txw: When I was in Whitehorse, I said to the youth “without you I wouldn’t have a show.” I thought it was important for youth to remember who they are and where they came from. SM: Compared to other regions where you’ve filmed in Canada, what are the unique strengths of the Aboriginal athletes from Whitehorse? SS: I noticed how some of the young people are very fit. I don’t know if it’s due to their lifestyles, healthy eating, living off the land more, or they’re more outdoorsy or athletic. I also found the youth were totally engaged. They were really eager to share their sports and give us demonstrations. Why

we do it, why it’s important and where the information came from. They wanted to showcase their way of life, which they hold dear to their hearts. SM: What’s the importance of focusing on the Arctic and Dene Games for one episode? SS: We visited Canada’s Northern House at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games and filmed a demo reel for the show. We highlighted the importance of the kicking games to the Arctic — the way the Inuit kept warm through the winter nights and stayed in shape. We watched what we filmed. We realized the importance of, and lack of knowledge about, the Arctic and Dene Games. I thought it was important to showcase this across Canada. SM: What is an Aboriginal sport being played in the Yukon, and what is its importance to the Aboriginal culture of the area? SS: Snow Snake is a (game played by throwing a long slender piece of wood) like a spear; it’s finely honed, rounded and lacquered. It can be used on snow

or ice, and travel for up to a kilometre. It’s a recreational activity now, but back in the day it was used to keep food on the table. It’s a sport that’s played as far as Ontario. We met an elder in Ontario who makes Snow Snakes when we filmed an episode their last summer. SM: While filming in Whitehorse, what’s the most memorable piece of knowledge an elder shared with you? SS: The key message has been “thank you for taking the time to let us know, and remind the kids how important and fun this is. This is our way of life.” People are forgetting about it with the technologies of today. It’s important to remember the past that leads us into the future.

Northern show a success with one camera and a love of fishing

W

hen you hear the name Maximum Limit Fishing, you might expect the same old fishing show. But this is not the case for the Northwest Territories-based production. Maxim Bloudov has created a truly Northern experience to share with all. “I watch fishing shows religiously and have been fishing my whole life, 80 per cent of them are catching bass and this isn’t cool anymore,” says Bloudov, the show’s host, producer, editor, marketing team and occasional cameraman. As the number one watched Canadian fishing show, with 64,000

weekly viewers, and the number three overall Canadian show on Wild TV, he has proven this is the case. With a basic $800 camera and six pilot episodes in hand he went to Northwestel and got a spot on community TV. “There is no script, this is real,” he says. “It is not like the shows down south with multiple boats and many cameras. There are no cuts, no ‘let’s do it again.’ We just roll it how it is. Whatever happens happens.” The format is simple, but it works.

“(Northwestel) gave us a start,” says Bloudov. “It was really popular and I got a lot of feedback, so with some government funding I was able to shoot 12 episodes for season two and 13 for season three.” The sponsorship from the show started as local small businesses helping out with whatever they could. Now that the show has gone national he has secured sponsorship from some big companies like Yellowknife Chrysler, Lucky Strike and Okuma fishing tackle. Each episode brings you a new experience. boat with Bloudov you might be heading out fine dining on Northern pike, or learning how to set your down rigger for trout. Either way you are not staying in one place to long. “We will hang out for seven to 10 minutes then we’re moving if there is no action.” Bloudov believes geography is one of the key factors that has helped his show prosper. “The North is like a big magnet and down deep in everyone’s heart they want to come up here,” he says. “Some can’t afford it and we are the only fishing show in the

Take It in Stride with Ben Yu Schott

Running in Fear

Runners must unite in aftermath of Boston

P

eople have trained their entire lives to run the Boston Marathon and making it there is a tremendous accomplishment. The recent bombings at the 2013 event were heinous, horrible acts. What should have been a day of celebration, turned into a day of sorrow. To those people affected— runners, spectators, Bostonites — my thoughts and prayers go out to you. Three Yukoners were there and thankfully, all three were okay. Initially it made me think twice about participating in big running events. My kids and wife have waited for me at the finish line in the past and it sickens me to think of them in danger. After 9/11, people worried about getting on airplanes. Now people will worry about crossing the finish line. In either case, letting this fear dictate our lives means the cowards who commit these acts win. As a community, runners have a responsibility to prove that these attacks will not impact the pursuit of our goals and the celebration of the hard work that goes into our sport. Instead of running from these events, we have to run towards them and make them bigger and better than ever. Boston will bounce back and next year’s event will carry on its tradition of excellence. This summer I’ll have those in Boston in the back of my mind with every step I take. I will remember what a gift it is to run every day and will honour those affected by the Boston Marathon tragedy by continuing to do so. I will continue

to participate in big events with a renewed hunger to keep running free, running hard. Now, I want to qualify and run in the Boston Marathon. I want to prove to myself that I can do it but more importantly, I want to prove to the perpetrators that I won’t be

deterred from doing what I love. The summer season is here. May highlights include the return of Tuesday night 5 km fun runs and Thursday night trail runs along with events like the Haekel Hill Run and Run for Mom. Visit the Athletics Yukon Calendar of Events at Ath-

leticsYukon.ca learn more. Until next time, keep putting one foot in front of the other towards a happier and healthier life. Ben Yu Schott is a board member with Athletics Yukon, a running Dad and a coffee nut.

here are pussy willows, crocuses and chives growing in the garden. Migrating birds are returning to Swan Haven and mallards are swimming in the ditch just down the road. On the farm we see new life in spring as well, although it isn’t as reliant on the weather as crocuses and returning geese. Every spring we order and then prepare for our new chicks and turkeys poults. This year we are getting goslings and also replacing our laying hens, which means even more chicks this year than usual. Chicks, poults and goslings, like all baby birds, are able to survive without food or water for about 48 hours after hatching. Because of this, Yukoners are able to acquire them from southern Canada. A few years ago we started to order chicks from a hatchery in Quebec with a group of other farmers. These chicks grew into very hardy birds that did well in our northern climate. This year our birds were to ar-

rive on April 18. We usually would gather at the airport to wait for the chicks to come in, divide up the shipment and race home to get them into their brooders. This year we received a call around 5 p.m. letting us know that someone had off-loaded them by mistake and they were in Winnipeg for the night. We knew they were tough chicks, but they are still babies, so anything could happen. When they arrived they still seemed full of energy — a good sign. But because more than 24 hours had passed since they had hatched we had less time to get them settled. When we bring home new chicks we like to make sure they know where the water is and have a drink before they go off to explore their new surroundings. We add molasses to the water to help boost their energy, we make sure there is feed for them to peck at and heat lamps for them to warm up under. The chicks seemed to be quite

happy to be out of their confinement and roaming around. They all got a drink of water and some were hungry and ready to eat. Considering what could have gone wrong, these chicks have done very well. We still have to prepare for more chicks because this was only the first shipment of three. Spring is truly here. Joan Norberg and her husband, Allan, run Grizzly Valley Farms on the Mayo Road. They continue to successfully endure the Yukon’s short seasons and less-than-ideal soil conditions. Send her your questions at grizzlyvalleyfarms@hotmail.com
