he discs one uses in disc golf have certain innate properties that allow them to act in a reasonably predictable manner. For example, all else being equal, if a right-handed player tosses a backhand shot, the disc will start by going in the direction it was thrown but as it loses momentum it will dive sharply to the left. Conversely, if the same player throws a forehand shot it will trail off to the right.

This is the nature of discs in flight.

A good disc golfer will keep these intrinsic tendencies in mind when making her shot selection.

And often these predictable properties can be used to the advantage of the player.

However, once a participant has mastered these basic principles of disc golf physics there are more advanced lessons and experiments to be undertaken.

Exhibit A, my favourite style of shot in all of disc golf: the anhyzer.

The anhyzer is a backhand shot in which the disc rejects its natural inclination to careen to the left and instead travels in a beautiful curving arc to the right.

My trusty mid-range Cobra is usually the disc I select for an anhyzer along this counter-intuitive trajectory it must be thrown in a very deliberate manner.

When throwing a regular backhand, you draw the disc back across your body at about waistlevel — keeping it parallel to the ground. Then, leading with your elbow, you spring your arm forward, gradually extending your forearm until your arm is fully extended and pointed in the intended direction of your disc’s journey. For added speed and directional integrity you snap your wrist at the last possible instant before the disc takes off.

However, as you throw an anhyzer you draw the disc back higher — at shoulder-height rather than waist-level. And instead of keeping the disc parallel to the ground, you hold it such that the outer edge is higher than the inside edge, forming approximately a 45-degree angle with the ground.

Then, instead of generating velocity by violently ripping your arm forward, you allow your arm to travel in a lazy overhand semi-

circle, roughly the shape of a rainbow.

The anhyzer is a useful shot when you are situated on the fairway aiming at a basket that is 50 to 100 feet ahead of you, off to the right, and obscured by trees.

The sharp observer will right fully ask, why not just throw a forehand in such a situation? After all, if a forehand shot naturally drifts to the right why go through the rigmarole of an anhyzer for the same effect?

There are two reasons.

First, many would throw a forehand shot in such a situation, but my forehand shot is still a work-inprogress; it’s less reliable than the anhyzer. And secondly, in a world of global warming, military strife, and unpredictable stock markets it is easy to feel powerless; but the anhyzer affirms my hope that I can actually bend the world towards my will. The disc’s nature is to go left, but I have thrown it in such a manner that it is forced to arc right. Thus, my authority is respected.

I

n Halifax the better Salvation Army thrift store is on Green Street. It’s about a 15 minute walk from Dalhousie University, where I went. I used to go thrift shopping often, sometimes more than once a week.

I’d go between classes, instead of studying or writing assignments, if I felt lonely or hungry or tired.

I’d buy a bag of candied cashew nuts from the grocery store, and a can of soda water. I’d wander the aisles of that big dank warehouse, pushing a shopping cart that teetered high with clothes other people wore.

I’d try on sweaters, hats, and shoes and leave them on as I perused.

Necklaces, bracelets, gloves, and jackets.

I test rode things I wouldn’t normally buy, and as I chose which items to keep at the end of a browsing session, sometimes I’d choose an item counterintuitive to my nature, just because I had enjoyed our time together.

Treasure hunting, I called it.

I found merino wool sweaters, alpaca hats, silk pantsuits, and sharkskin loafers. I bought camisoles for friends and put dresses in a secret rack if I thought my sister would come in later for a look. I sort of had an ownership over that place; it was a secret haunt.

Whitehorse doesn’t present me with the same options Halifax did.

I really missed that Green Street Sally Ann at first. And I still do, although substitutions are slowly mushrooming around me.

The Facebook buy and sell has

unearthed for me one pair of moccasins. I had to go to what I initially thought was a sketchy apartment downtown to pick them up. I tentatively climbed the stairs, as instructed, and knocked on the door. I entered an expansive upper level apartment where tunes blared and plants grew in sunny windows. It took minutes to complete the weird transaction, the type that occurs when you finally meet the person with whom you’re been corresponding online, but as I rode away on my bike it seemed like it had been a lot longer than that. I had stumbled into a world, and then out of it, with a new pair of shoes and expanded knowledge of that location.

I bought a summer dress at a second hand store last year. I wore it to a party and an unfamiliar girl approached me, saying it had been her dress. We laughed and talked about how we could have simply exchanged the article of clothing in person, if we had only known. It bonded us, and now we’re friends. We’d probably be friends without the dress incident, but it felt special.

It gave us a story.

put my backing behind several projects over the next 10 years, things like what I’ve doing with Daniel in Whitehorse.”

“Mark and I have worked together a lot over the last 10 or 15 years, and we’ve sort of developed a way of approaching string writing. So it’s kind of a natural extension of all that work to be releasing a CD,” Janke says.

While Fewer is not a composer per se, his skill as an improviser has been integral to their collaboration, whether for concerts or for one of Janke’s film projects.

“If it wasn’t improvising actual notes, it would be improvising time. So I would be improvising the way in which a line might flow around an idea,” he says.

Fewer says one work that sparked their long-term relationship was “Martha Black’s Reel”, a tune Janke wrote in 1996 for fiddle and prepared piano.

“It was so beautiful, it is still one of my favourite works for violin and piano in the last 30 years,” he says.

“Since then, there have been several new pieces, and now of course with this new recording coming up there will be more.”

That recording will feature a number of violin solos, as well as duets for piano and violin. If funding permits, Janke says, it will also include an 18-minute string quartet.

The composer admits his first foray into writing a full album of string music doesn’t fit an easily-

defined genre.

“That’s a tough one, because it’s violin music. It’s like contemporary music, but it’s accessible,” he ventures.

“It’s not very academic, I guess is one way to put it. But it’s a new music CD, so it’s for new music aficionados.”

Fewer struggles with the same question.

“Some people will want to call it new music; some people will want to call it classical music; some people might even say avant-garde. It’s hard to put a really clear finger on that,” he says.

“He doesn’t write thinking he’s going to be Schoenberg. He’s writing it like he’s Daniel Janke.”

The pair will perform in concert “on the wing” at the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC) on Sunday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. The event is a coproduction of Jazz Yukon and YAC. Tickets range from $17 to $22.

“The performance is part of the development process,” Fewer explains.

“One of the things that makes something clearer in the performer’s or the interpreter’s mind is the opportunity to play it for other listeners in a live space.”

Janke and Fewer will give an artist talk about the collaborative process from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 15 at the Old Fire Hall.

Violinist Mark Fewer and composer Daniel Janke take their partnership public with two events this week ne of Canada’s busiest and most versatile violinists will perform in Whitehorse on May 17 as part of his collaboration with local composer Daniel Janke on an upcoming CD of contemporary string music.

In a career spanning more than 20 years, Mark Fewer has been — among other things — a chamber musician, a symphony concertmaster and soloist, and an interpreter of such jazz legends as Stephane Grappelli and Stuff Smith.

He has also been an academic and founding artistic director of the innovative SweetWater Music Festival in Owen Sound, Ontario.

You might even catch him playing the sprightly fiddle tunes that characterize his Newfoundland home, although that’s not how he cut his musical teeth.

“I started with piano, then I added violin as a classical instrument, and only later did I start getting into jigs and reels,” he admits.

“But yeah, if you’re a Newfie and you own a fiddle, you really can’t not play jigs and reels”.

The Globe and Mail once described his playing as a marriage of “precise, classical intensity and fiddler’s flair,” and Fewer doesn’t deny the Island influence.

“I’ve often played classical concerts, particularly certain types of classical concerts, like Baroque music, and had people say, ‘I never knew it could sound like it was a jig from Joe Batt’s Arm,’” he laughs.

“There is obviously a part of me that is inherently from the Island, as it were, as an expressive device. It’s not like I can completely turn that off once it’s been turned on.”

For the past few years, Fewer has been artist-in-residence in the music department of Stanford University in San Francisco, California, and second violinist with the world-renowned St. Lawrence String Quartet.

This summer, he takes up a new post in Montreal, chairing the string department in McGill University’s prestigious Schulich School of Music, where he previously served as an associate professor of violin and chamber music.

Fewer was originally hired to bring diversity to a program heavily weighted to classical music, he explains.

“Now they’re recognizing that up one level further with this new posting, which will enable me to

londikers pride ourselves on not needing to lock our doors every time we leave our houses. But sometimes we should, as events this week proved. But in this case, locking the doors wouldn’t have been enough.

This notice from Jesse Cooke (school teacher and Husky Bus owner) appeared on Facebook early in the week: “Stolen from Goldrush Campground in Dawson: 1970s two-tone beige small camper trailer. Just noticed, snow was cleared from around it a few weeks ago so it could have been anytime over the last few weeks.

I would very much like to have it back. If anyone has seen it around please tell myself or the RCMP.” My interest was piqued. Over the years we’ve had a few things stolen from around Chez Davidson. One year there was a shovel, which I found up the street a ways with our name right there on it.

Then there was a ladder, which we didn’t find. Most recently, our spare gas can and the Rubbermaid

tote it was stored in were stolen from the back of our truck.

The most serious theft, a few years ago, was our in-town car, a second hand Kia Rio that someone (we never did find out who) took for a joy ride and ran off the road and over a hill, driving up to the Midnight Dome. It was totalled.

On that particular night four other cars were broken into in a straight line that ended in the lane behind our house, but only at our place did they find where the extra set of keys was hidden.

A whole travel trailer though, that’s ambitious.

It was interesting to watch the flow of conversation on several Facebook postings as people mobilized and began to hunt on behalf of a friend. Some posted they had seen it at various places and others just posted messages of support and commiseration.

It was the Facebook posse that found the missing trailer, abandoned on one of the mining roads heading out of town when the going got too tough for whatever

vehicle the thieves were towing it with.

What did the thieves think they were going to do with it? Did they really think they could just park it somewhere out of sight, live in it for the summer, and have no one notice? Sure, finding summer accommodation in Dawson can be tough, but that’s no excuse for theft.

The initial posting had been at 8:03 a.m. and by 4:17 p.m. the Cooke family posted: “It has been recovered”.

There hasn’t been any word yet on whether the culprits were tracked down, so perhaps we’ll just have to be cautious with our things for a little while.

Contributing to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your grandchild is the best approach. But depending on the circumstances, there may be other options worth exploring.

When it comes to an RESP, a grandparent can open up a plan with the child as a beneficiary. However, because the parents may already have an RESP for their child, it may make more sense to contribute to an existing plan.

If parents don’t make full contributions each year, there is an opportunity for grandparents to make up the difference. Not only will this help maximize the level of annual contributions, it will ensure the RESP is eligible for the maximum Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) of up to $500 a year.

A grandparent can gift money to the child’s parents, who can then make the contribution on their behalf. And doing it this way can eliminate the confusion that having more than one RESP for a child can create.

If grandparents do open a separate RESP for a child, they need to exercise caution. If parents and grandparents have plans, total contributions need to be carefully monitored to ensure the allowed maximums are not exceeded.

Another concern for grandparents opening an RESP is the possibility that the child will not further his or her education. Under certain circumstances the growth of the funds in the RESP can be transferred back to the contributor’s Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) if a child doesn’t go to college or university. But a grandparent may be beyond RRSP age, and funds cannot be transferred to a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF). This means returned amounts could be heavily taxed.

Grandparents can also open a family RESP, through which they can name their grandchildren as beneficiaries. If one or more children choose not to attend a postsecondary institution, other grandchildren can use the money, up to certain maximums.

If there is no available contribution room in a child’s RESP, grandparents may want to consider an in-trust account. This is a type of informal trust set up to allow an adult to manage funds on behalf of a child. When the child reaches the age of majority, he or she takes control of the funds in the trust.

An in-trust account, which can be set up at a financial institution, is a good way to contribute amounts beyond those allowed by an RESP. There are no contribution limits, although unlike an RESP there is no tax deferral. However, if set up correctly, taxes can be managed by having capital gains taxed in the hands of a childwhose tax liabilities will be non-existent or small.

pring is here and summer is coming. Everybody has put away talk of events that happened in the cold winter months.

The 2016 Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous is moons away.

However, my crown as Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR) Queen is only good for one year, and there are so many things I want to do. So here we have the creation of “The Queen’s Corner”, a monthly column for What’s Up Yukon. Readers will be updated on what is happening during my oneyear “royal” journey and the positive impact I hope to achieve in the communities. Stay tuned.

How did this journey start?

My family and I moved to the Yukon four years ago, and the Yukon and its people have been incomparably kind to us. I have been blessed with the opportunity to pursue my real estate career and my husband has a job he likes, too. Most important of all, there are services available for my

adult son with special needs, who requires constant supervision.

Joining the YSR Queen contest was my way of giving back to the community. But honestly, I had no idea what I was signing up for.

I had no prior knowledge about YSR. I had never purchased a single Queen raffle ticket before joining the competition. The ice sculptures at Shipyards Park are the only thing I remember about the festival prior to my running for the Rendezvous Queen title.

My main purpose in running was to help raise money, selling raffle tickets for the events so that kids would be able to attend the events free. I thought, “It is for a good cause, why not?”

I was also enticed by other benefits of being a contestant: improving my public speaking skills, and, appealing to my vanity, having the opportunity to have pictures taken with me in Victorian-era costumes for posters.

“Hey, those posters might go down in history,” were the words of my wishful thinking.

After all, learning public speaking and participating in a simple fashion show didn’t seem to be too tough. So I signed on the dotted line.

We were given a manual the first day of our Queen School at the end of November last year.

It spelled out very clearly what we were going to be judged on: public speaking, a fashion show, ticket selling, dinner etiquette, performance in a talent show, an interview, hosting the Queen’s tea — but wait — hold on a minute. I had no talent to show, and I wasn’t aware of all the other items, except for the ticket-selling.

It was decision time; do I quit or continue with this?

I wanted to give back to the community. And what would I say to my sponsor if I were to quit? What’s more, I had already signed on the dotted line.

“Okay, Okay,” I thought. “I will do it. I’ll be a good sport and a responsible person. I will

Northern Bard

May 14, 2015 The following poem was an entrant in our Northern Bard poetry contest.

The Adventures of Suburban Joe

by Nicole Fradette It’s been ten years and three months since we moved to this street.

The neighbors are friendly. It’s quiet and neat.

The bus and the mail come right to our door.

We’ve updated the paint and we’ve reclaimed the floor.

But, as I sort the recycling and rake up the lawn, I start to wonder where Adventure has gone.

He left on a Tuesday without looking back.

On his face was a grin, on his shoulders, a sack.

He asked me to join him as he turned away and I gave it some thought but had work the next day.

He may be in Canada learning moose calls, or clinking a stein in Germanic beer halls.

Have you heard of the pirate of Old Havershim?

They say it’s a myth but I’m sure it was him.

And the unexplained lights people see in the sky?

Well, he always talked about learning to fly.

Warming to Her Job

For the past 15 years, Karen Dubois has been at the hub of Dawson City’s thriving arts scene

aren Dubois knows how she wants to be remembered when she eventually leaves her job as executive director of the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC) in Dawson City.

“I hope my legacy is going to be a new furnace for this building. It could be the Karen Dubois Memorial Furnace,” she jokes.

Dubois has been with KIAC since its inception in 1999, starting as program manager and moving into her current role in 2008.

Apart from a new heating source for the historic Odd Fellows Hall, she also hopes to see the fulfillment of the original dream of KIAC’s founders, the Dawson City Arts Society (DCAS), to re-purpose various Klondike heritage buildings for arts presentation and development.

“Right now there’s kind of a movement to try to turn the Yukon Sawmill into artist studios.

That would make me very happy,” she says.

“I’d love to see the Palace Grand being used more. I’d like

to see the Dawson Daily News being used more for printmaking. I’d like to see more of a craft centre at Bear Creek.”

As a third-generation Dawsonite on her father’s side, Dubois has known those buildings all her life. And she’s been actively involved in the town’s flourishing arts scene since the early days of the Dawson City Music Festival.

In the early ‘70s, she studied arts and crafts with the late Ted Harrison in Whitehorse and then went on to earn a degree in art education.

“When I was in university, my area of concentration was weaving and fabric design, and I actually had a pottery studio for three years, but apart from taking the occasional course, I’m not a practising artist.”

From university, Dubois returned home to teach at the Robert Service School.

“I did a bit of art, but I really wanted to be in Dawson, and there wasn’t a fulltime art position, so I just took a regular teaching pos-

ition,” she says.

After three years of teaching, she took time off to do some travelling before embarking on a new career, teaching adults “for many, many years” at the local Yukon College campus.

“I was very involved with the music festival during all those years, so I learned a lot about working in the non-profit sector,” she says.

“When KIAC opened, I thought it was a good opportunity to sort of marry my interest in the arts with my experience co-ordinating courses for adults,” she says.

During her time with the organization, KIAC has operated the refurbished Odd Fellows Hall as a performing space and art gallery, and launched the Dawson City International Short Film Festival, the Riverside Arts Festival, an artist residency program, and an art enrichment program for high school students.

In 2007, arts education in Dawson took another leap forward with the opening of the Yukon

School of Visual Arts (SOVA), through a three-way partnership of DCAS, Yukon College, and the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation.

“I mean, just think how lucky we are in Dawson to have exposure to all of this,” Dubois enthuses.

“It’s not that we don’t have strategic plans, but they’ve been loose enough that there’s been the opportunity for all kinds of crazy things to happen.”

Having so many irons in the fire can also make it difficult to determine priorities, however. That’s why KIAC is currently involved in a strategic planning process “to help us try to focus our energy a little bit,” she explains.

Dubois has no regrets about deciding “quite awhile ago” and make her contribution to the arts through administration, rather than as a practising artist.

“It’s really been an enriching experience. It’s going on 15 years, so it’s really hard to remember what life was like before KIAC.” That doesn’t mean she can’t

picture what life might look like after KIAC, when she retires in about four years.

Dubois says she’s “thrilled” at the thought of having time to work on some of her own projects, such as framing a lot of her own artwork and setting up a loom her grandmother gave her years ago, or perhaps she’ll “dabble a little bit” in piano and violin more often.

“I’ve got a lot of books to read. I’ve got a lot of films to watch. There’s a lot of places in the world that I want to see, and I have a lot of friends I’d like to visit that are all over the world, and a lot of concerts I’d like to go to.”

Who knows, there may even be time for an occasional visit to inspect the Karen Dubois Memorial Furnace at the Odd Fellows Hall.

almon can be grilled in your oven. Then, it’s referred to as broiling. It can also be grilled on the barbeque, or carefully over a campfire.

During our lengthy winters broiling is the usual method at our house, but occasionally I dig the snow off the barbeque and ask myself why I am standing out in the cold.

Salmon is a very forgiving fish.

Even when it’s over-cooked it is still flavourful. Although, that can be due to the marinade or sauce used in its preparation. A plain, unadorned fillet or steak is easy to ruin; overcooking it will dry it out.

If you are fortunate enough to catch your own Pacific salmon, (king, sockeye or coho), or if you buy it fresh from late summer fish vendors, you can choose between dressing the fish in steaks, fillets, or sometimes leaving them whole.

I prefer fillets cut into mealsized portions and vacuum-sealed.

When done properly, fillets are completely boneless. Steaks are usually prepared bone-in, but the bones can easily be removed after cooking.

Whether fillets or steaks, the pieces can be sealed with a marinade in a bag for an hour or so prior to grilling. Different pieces can be in separate bags to try different marinades or to please someone with a particular taste. Instead of a marinade, pieces can be brushed

with a sauce an hour or so prior to cooking. Whole fish can be stuffed skin-on, with or without being wrapped in aluminum foil. Fillets or steaks can also be wrapped in tinfoil with the sauce, in which case it’s steamed, not grilled.

If broiling, the tray should be covered with an adequate-sized piece of tinfoil with lots of holes poked through it to allow the juices to run off. If barbequing, the skin is better left on the fillet, and the rack liberally brushed with olive oil to minimize sticking, which results in broken fillets.

Steaks can be placed right on the oiled racks, and turned over very gently with a large spatula.

Cook 10-12 minutes per inch of thickness with barbeque lid down to keep the heat in.

• Whatever your choice of sauce or marinade and cooking method, always make lemon wedges available (or lemon juice) to sprinkle on the fish. That and a chilled glass of white wine are the perfect combination.

“I was a bit ambitious at first,” says Hierlihy. “I wanted to serve everything.”

Meaning, they had a pretty extensive menu for their small space — everything from curry to Tom Yum soup to chicken satay with peanut sauce to stir-fry. These are all things she hopes to see back on the menu in the future, but for now they’ve streamlined things in order to keep up with prep.

On the day I go their menu features pad Thai, glass noodle salad, and a daily curry — yellow with chicken and coconut rice this time. They also have hand rolled spring rolls, but they were sold out when I arrived.

“We’re making spring rolls almost constantly,” Hierlihy says. “Every time we make a huge batch we can’t possibly sell out of, we do.”

Through a trailer window I can see the labour-intensive and delicate process of a fresh batch being rolled.

To drink they have Thai iced tea and coffee; the tea is brewed strong with star anise and cinnamon added.

he Zhange Danxia landform in Gansu, China; The Great Blue Hole in Belize; Tulip Fields in the Netherlands; Mount Roraima in Venezuela, Brazil, and Guana, and 23 more places make up a Buzzfeed list of “27 Surreal Places to Visit Before You Die”.

Most of the time these placesto-see-before-you-die are oceans away in remote and exotic places.

Looking at these places, I yearn for the time and money to see every incredible thing there

PHOTOS: by Alexander Weber is to see. But then a visit to my bank statement sends me spiralling back to reality. Every now and then, however, a North American destination will weasel its way onto the list, and into my heart.

“Mendenhall Ice Caves of Juneau, Alaska” reads one item on the list. When I saw this back in early 2014 my curiosity was piqued. What on earth is an ice cave? How big is it? How do you get inside? Do you need to rappel or climb?

I’ve never been spelunking — the technical word for cave exploring. Would it be like that, but a lot colder and bluer? Are there frozen woolly mammoths to be found inside? Or Superman’s Fortress of Solitude?

I had to know.

The first thing to do, though, was get to Juneau — which includes a two-hour drive to Skagway, and a seven hour ferry ride through an incredible inlet, full of eagles and seals and other majes-

Next you have to get yourself to the Mendenhall Glacier, which is where the cave is found, formed from surface melt-water running through and under the ice. Supposedly Iceland has a ton of these caves from its abundant geothermal activity.

Luckily the Mendenhall Glacier is easy to access because there is a road practically right to its base.

Now comes the hard part: finding the caves within the massive glacier itself.

When I was searching for this info, I came across some useful GPS coordinates online, and some not-so-useful info from park rangers and the like. For safety reasons and liability, most guides and park rangers recommend that you cont’d on page 17...

Exploring the Bittersweet Beauty of the Juneau Ice Cave ... cont’d don’t try and find the ice caves on your own. I suppose some people have been lost or hurt while tromping around on the Mendenhall. The info I had was to hike the west glacier trail (5.5 km), and then hike a little bit on the ice.

When we got to the visitor centre, however, the Mendenhall Lake was still frozen, so we bee-lined it to the base. After some initial exploring around the centre of the base (and getting a cold footsoaking), we could see a pretty distinct path in the snow leading to the west end. From there, there was another clear path up onto the ice and over a little hump. After the hump you climb over some rocks and boulders, and you are abruptly welcomed by the mouth of the cave.

Who needs directions or any idea of what one is doing? The path of 100 fools is plenty.

I was happy to discover that the deep intense blue I had seen in the article was actually that deep and intense in real life. I

don’t know if it’s something I’ve inherited from my generation, but it seems that we’ve all become accustomed to digital alteration, to the point where we are constantly lowering our expectations for how things will “really” look.

The mouth and the cave itself are quite large, possibly five metres high and 10 metres across at some points. The bottom is all rocks and dirt, and a small stream. The ice is unlike any ice I’d ever seen before. Exceptionally smooth and clear. The surface is as if a giant sculptor had carved giant chips

It’s the stuff wintery-icy dreams are made of. At the end, there is a giant vertical tunnel straight up to the top, probably where melt-water first started the carving process. We explored the

cave for an hour, and even had ourselves a picnic in the middle of some boulders.

The whole experience was just like the article said: surreal.

What’s more, this beautiful thing owes its existence to our global warming disaster; ice caves are created from the melting of the glacier. How bittersweet.

This also means they are temporary. Last June a large part of the mouth collapsed, and the roof was becoming dangerously thin.

Oh well, I guess there’s always Iceland.

Carpenters Can Be a Certified Success

“W

hen I was coming up through the trade, journeymen carpenters were these grey-haired ninjas .. Yodas,” says Bill Johnstone, a Whitehorse carpenter.

“But I’ve worked with journeymen who are 26. Some of the younger guys have the schooling, but not the workplace smarts, so there is some give and take.”

More and more it is becoming important to have that certification to get work on large jobs and industrial jobs.

So, Johnstone has been spending his Friday nights and Saturdays in a classroom with 14 other students to learn what they need to challenge the Red Seal exam.

Each of them need 9,600 hours of experience and a passing grade to become certified.

“Camp jobs are more accessible when you have a Red Seal,” says Johnstone. “And, if the local economy slows down, I have more options.

“I can earn more ... if I am working for the union, it is $3 more. When I start with a contractor, I have to prove what I know, so there is a starting wage and then they bump you up.”

Johnstone has been a full-time carpenter — “Uncertified,” he corrects — since 2003.

He moved to Whitehorse from Gibsons, B.C. in 2010 to be close to family. He has worked on a mixed-residential project in Mount Sima and for a contractor, building condos. He is now work-

ing on a restoration job at the Ted Harrison Artist Retreat.

So, what can a course like this teach someone like him?

“Math,” says Johnstone. “Roof math: valleys and gables and intersecting gables and truss design.

“Things like roof math and the more technical aspects of stair math are worth the cost of the course right there,” he says.

The last time he was a student in a classroom was in 1988. He is now faced with 400 pages of reading … and counting.

“It is surprisingly tiring,” says Johnstone. “Eight straight hours of thinking; I do a physical job, but the intellectual part is exhausting.

“Yes carpenters think, but I miss the moving.”

Richard Dickenson, a lead instructor with Integrated Carpentry Tutorials, introduces the math in the first weekend so that the students can come to grips with it over the next six weeks.

The whiteboard behind him has a series of angles and numbers that would not look out of place in a university physics classroom.

“It’s an intensive course,” says Dickenson. “But it is not insurmountable.

“It’s not really that tough when you break it down into bite-sized chunks. In school, they teach an abstract concept with no real application to a real-world scenario.

I’ve changed that around by taking out the math they don’t need, fo-

cused on the math they do need, and then simplified the process for them to get through the test.

“I get feedback from my guys and I know they are going out the next day and applying those skills immediately.

“I love my job. I get a lot of personal satisfaction from helping guys who, particularly, have been struggling with math. Helping them brush up and apply new skills every day just makes a big difference in their lives.

“And personal lives, too: their confidence levels are just enormous.”

Johnstone and his classmates will be writing the Red Seal exam after the May long weekend. So, Dickenson has added Sunday sessions for more training.

“It is optional,” says Johnstone. “But I don’t think anyone is going to pass up on it.”

Dickenson says the next course will be offered in the fall. There is already a waiting list of up to 30 people, but he will only accept 15 to help keep his attention on each student.

However, people should still apply because not everyone will be available for that course. And Dickenson says he will keep of-

fering the course until he has reached everyone.

Great Albums

In Defense of Joni Mitchell, and in Celebration of her 1971 Classic, Blue

I

n her controversial interview with Maclean’s Magazine in November 2014, Joni Mitchell refers to Debussy and Duke Ellington as the gold standard of music that inspires “awe” in her. She also dismisses some of her acolytes — such as those who sing her classic “River” from her album, Blue — as missing the point. It’s really a song about loneliness and regret, not a feel good Christmas carol. Seems fair enough to me.

Blue is a classic and she should get to have an opinion on those who interpret its songs.

When Mitchell wrote Blue, the now iconic, somewhat overwrought “singer-songwriter” genre was in its infancy. Although she might have mixed feelings about the genre she spearheaded, Blue is in many ways where the sperm meets the egg — and perhaps a highwater mark for the genre.

Several songs on Blue see Mitchell on the leeward side of the romantic slope. Affairs have run their course. The ‘60s dream is celebrated in “California” but the loneliness when you wake up alone is detailed in “Last Time I Saw Richard”, “Case of You”, and “River”.

But Blue isn’t all the darker shade. There’s plenty of spark and upbeat energy here for those who want to frollick.

“California” is a straightforward celebration of the west coast back-to-the-land yearnings of the era. “Carey” is an upbeat anthem for hippy chicks over the

decades who want to live in the moment: “Let’s not talk of farethee-wells now / The night is a starry dome”.

That song also taps into the tendency of those who appreciate the finer things after a walk on the wild side: “I sure do miss my clean white linen and my fancy French cologne.”

Mitchell has never apologized for epicurean tendencies.

Former Rheostatics indie rocker turned columnist, Dave Bidini, criticized her in his “Open Letter to Joni Mitchell” in the National Post as “more pretentious and insecure than ever” largely in response to her Maclean’s interview.

Indeed Mitchell’s work is literate and complicated. And quite honestly, if you’ve written a record a transcendent as Blue, I think you get to have a few opinions, even if they veer into caustic territory as the decades pass and health fails.

Bidini, whose writing frequently features references to his Toronto Maple Leafs fixation, might criticize her flirtations with the pretentious side of art but she’s never hidden her intellectual inspirations. She considers Nietzsche “a hero”.

Songs like “Last time I saw Richard” and “Case of You” paint pictures in the way that short story writers create mental images for readers. We’re not waiting on a thumpy chorus, we’re swallowed into a song. I think that’s what separates her from those that came after her.

Blue epitomizes the countercultural ideas and sound of its era and my quick unscientific search found little negative trolling on the Internet. In fact, I’ll conclude with the refreshing tone of the first commentator on the YouTube link to the album: “People will still be listening to this album in 200 years. It’s perfect.”

Off-road Vehicle Regulation The Yukon public is invited to provide comments and suggestions to assist government in the development of a made-in-the-Yukon off-road vehicle policy.

The off-road vehicle (ORV) regulations are being developed in response to a recommendation brought forward by the Select Committee on the safe operation and use of off-road vehicles. The recommendation highlights the need for effective regulation and enforcement to protect the environment from damage caused by ORVs. Deadline for comments will be June 22, 2015.

John Gullison

has set a personal goal to raise $5000 this year!

Proudly displayed in John Gullison’s garage above his workbench and about ten feet from his motorcycle, is the panoramic photograph of the Ride for Dad riders and their bikes gathered at the Transportation Museum in June, 2014. John had won the bidding war at the January 2015 Yuk Yuks comedy night during the silent auction in order to obtain this picture. Although his bidding strategy with the needed attention to the bids and the deadline took some effort, John knew this picture belonged on his wall. He’d worked for it. He deserved it.

John has been involved as an active participant in the Yukon Ride for Dad campaign since its inception 5 years ago. He knew two of the founding members –Al and Leah Verishine through their mutual involvement in another motorbike group. However, John had his own reasons to support this prostate cancer awareness endeavour besides enjoying the biker camaraderie. When he was in his early thirties and driving truck for a living, a colleague who was the same age had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. John soon learned many of the facts of this terrible disease.

Although 30 is a young age for prostate issues, the stats suggest that 75% of men will test positive for prostate cancer by the age 75, and, if we lived to be 100, it will likely have affected us all. John wasn’t going to wait that long or take any chances. He’s been getting his checked now for the better part of twenty years, and is not shy about telling his friends to do the same. “Sure, it’s not pleasant,” he laughs, “and my doctor doesn’t like it any more than I do.” But the risks are too great, and the benefits of catching it early are well worth it. Even just doing the PSA blood work will give you some answers or peace of mind.

These are the stats and the facts that John will gladly tell his friends, coworkers, colleagues, and neighbours as he hits them up for donations. “I don’t mind hounding people for money,” he admits. “And this cause is definitely worth it”. When he gets involved in something, he gives it 110%, and this has certainly been the case in the money raised by John for the Yukon Ride for Dad. In the first couple years, he managed to bring in 700 to 1000 dollars. However, every year he’s set a goal to beat his previous year’s accomplishments. The total amount raised by John over the past 5 years is $5219, and, if he meets this year’s goal, he’ll double this.

John has set a personal goal to raise $5000 this year. It was only a month ago that he received an email from the national Ride for Dad office, sparking his fundraising, and he’s already up to $1050.

Although people don’t carry cash like they used to, the ability to donate online has addressed this. John will carry his sponsor sheets (of which he’s on to his 5th!), rattle off some stats and the importance of this campaign, and garner a commitment. He then follows up with these people to ensure they’ve donated online as they promised. As an added incentive this year, considering his lofty goal, John has promised all of his supporters that their names are going into a draw for a $100 gift certificate for some place local that he will personally purchase.

The Yukon Ride for Dad not only benefits from a supporter like John, it gives back. There are plenty of prizes to be won on Ride Day including those from the poker run that goes around the Carcross, Tagish, Jake’s Corner loop. Additionally, the top money-raiser walks away with two tickets for anywhere Air North flies. Last year, John used these tickets to fly his in-laws up to see the start of the Quest as well as his and his wife, Lisa’s new house.

John beams as he talks about the corporate sponsors in this town as well as the generosity and creativity of his friends and family. For example, projects like yard clean ups have produced $50 in recycling that has been rerouted to Ride for Dad. John is also generous in giving to other campaigns and his colleagues know this and reciprocate. He credits this kind of camaraderie with keeping him going, not just in the money-raising, but also in the actual events on Ride Day. “How often do you get to go for a ride with over a hundred other bikes in the Yukon?!”

The Break-Up Comedy Festival

Dawson City laughs itself into summer

reaking up is no laughing matter. But the Break-Up Comedy Festival, taking place in Dawson City on May 16, definitely is.

The idea for the festival came about when, a few years ago, the Dawson City Museum wanted to combine fundraising with a celebration of the Yukon River.

“The river today, as in the past, affects the pace of life in Dawson City,” says Alex Somerville, acting executive director of the museum.

After a long, cold winter, the river break-up is a sign of spring and the coming summer, of light and sun and easier living.

With the comedy festival, says Somerville, celebrated during the month when the river usually breaks up, “Dawson comes to life with a burst of laughter.”

But the festival is not your typical stand-up comedy act. Once again, with help from Lotteries Yukon, the museum is bringing up The Debaters, a popular CBC radio comedy show. The Debaters is recorded in front of a live audience in studios, theatres, and clubs across the country.

Hosted by Steve Patterson, the show takes the form of a debate between two different stand-up comedians. One takes the pro side, the other takes the contrary view. Based on a mix of “funny and fact”, the audience will decide who wins the debate by applauding for the performer they thought did the best job of combining laughs and logic.

Demers is a writer, comedian, and political activist from Vancouver. He frequently performs comedy at live venues across the country, as well as teaching a course on writing comedy at the University of British Columbia.

Graham Clark has performed comedy since he was 15 and is considered one of the most prolific stand-up comics in Canada.

The event will be emceed by Whitehorse comedian Anthony Trombetta.

Somerville is thrilled that the comedy festival fundraiser is able to bring high profile Canadian comedy talent to Dawson City each year.

“They’ve told us that they are excited to be making comedy gold in Dawson City,” he says of Demers and Clark. “The talent will be first class comedy.”

“They’re promising a sharply targeted show rich in local flavour,” he says.

Somerville is also thrilled that the show will take place in the historic Palace Grand Theatre, which in itself, he points out, is a testament to live theatre then and now.

“It’s a perfect location for this show,” he says.

“It’s going to be lots of fun.”

The Break-up Comedy Festival will be held on May 16 at the Palace Grand Theatre. Doors open at 7 p.m., the show starts at 8 p.m.

’m blessed. Or “blessed”, depending on how you look at it.

I am a part of one of the biggest families in the Yukon. I bet my family could launch an honest invasion on a sovereign nation — looking at you Luxembourg.

That’s just one side of one side of my family. There is so much family, there’s so much I don’t even know about. So let’s make this about my immediate family.

Let’s focus on good ol’ Mom and Dad. An anecdote: When I was eight or nine we would go to our cousin’s cabin at Lake Laberge because going to a cabin is a thing that people did back in the ‘80s. We sat by fires, threw rocks in lakes, pushed things with sticks into other things — everything a taxpayer would ever need to do. There was a really fun old boardwalk that ran from the side of the cabin to the lakeshore, which was great for sprinting on. When I would hit it at full gallop I swear I had the velocity to jump and clear the south end of the lake.

Obviously I went for it.

Instead of breaking any long distance records though, I tripped and clipped my knee on an exposed nail head. After all the blood, tears, bandaging, and wellwhat-did-you-expect therapy, I was just fine. Important things

were on the grill, so we moved on with our lives.

The next week at school I had a pretty cool scar to show off to the class; that mangled square centimeter on my knee was a hit.

However the story seemed to lack a je ne sais quoi — that means something, right?

So I decided I’d ham up this little accident and give the people a story. I remembered my folks chortling about having to amputate the leg after my fall. We all laughed. It was good material. Good enough to use in lieu of my boring slip and fall. The class thought it was a hit, but my teacher didn’t see the humour in leg amputatations at the cabin.

This wasn’t the first or last time I’d spun a yarn for personal gain or for the sake of a good story. This one got me into some trouble though.

I was too young at the time to understand, but my parents and I were subjected to after-hours meetings with the teacher and guidance councilor, and the possibility of more meetings. I think even pamphlets were distributed.

Trouble was stirred — horrible, embarrassing, and completely uncalled-for trouble.

This kind of thing happened several more times as I grew up.

I was otherwise an excellent child — I don’t care what you’ve heard

It would have been easy for my parents to box me up and mail me to an Eastern Bloc country. I’m sure some teachers would have high-fived at that prospect. But they didn’t.

It’s the uncommon things, the unique stories that make families special. I have been blessed with a family that accepted me and encouraged me to be uncommon even though it cost them several head cramps and after-hour meetings with various administrations.

Only family would do something like that for you — the family are born with or the family you choose.

I love you Mom and Dad. If I had the time and space for more examples of your patience I could fill a warehouse, but hopefully these few paragraphs cover it for now.

Let Kids Have Time to be Kids

by Catherine O’Donovan my own for hours without a parent present. I told her they are my fondest memories and I am so grateful for my childhood.

Our comfort zones in society have changed, no longer are our kids sent outside to play in residential neighbourhoods, but rather just to play in our yard. All the playgrounds are being equipped with rubber or cork landings.

Gone are the days that kids could jump off the “big toy” into gravel, get scraped up, and learn from this experience with the laws of gravity how to improve their jump and land safely.

We are trying so hard to protect our children that we may have missed out on the importance of allowing them to learn how to protect themselves. In order to learn how to jump and fall safely we have to let them play and test their limits on their own. I

recently wrote an article about my perspective on the benefits of organized sports and activities. In that article I touched on my strong belief in a balance between organized and un-organized play. If I was forced to take a side, I would side with free play.

I believe it breeds independence, in addition to social and motor development. But most importantly, it encourages creativity.

When sitting down to write this, I thought to myself, why write such an obvious statement — let kids be kids — shouldn’t this naturally occur in the raising of children?

But sometimes the most obvious things in life get missed and in the age of professional parenting, where we spend our adult lives shuttling and enrolling our kids in as many activities as we can, all with the best intentions, a reminder of the benefits of free play might be necessary.

If I’m wrong and you don’t need my reminder, you can use this as affirmation of the amazing job you are doing as you mold the next generation.

What credentials do I have for my published thoughts?

Well, I have been a parent for close to sixteen years, and have worked with children of all ages in nearly every job I have ever held since I was old enough to babysit.

I have been a gymnastics coach and gym manager, child developmental therapist, social worker, summer camp leader, educational assistant, substitute teacher, and of course mom, and wicked aunt.

All this is to say I consider myself an avid child observer.

So I have spent a considerable amount of time with children and I have noticed some concerning trends. Kids are not as physically confident as they once were; they

hoever said learning can’t be fun has never been part of the Chickadees program in Whitehorse. Designed for toddlers aged between three and five, this pre-school definitely puts the cool in school.

At this joint kids get free playtime, story creation, painting, crafts, fieldtrips, and the ever-sopopular circle time. If these perks aren’t enough, there is also a volunteer option for mom and dad to check out the Chickadees crib.

The fun-loving educational program runs twice a week from 9-11:30 a.m. during the regular school year. Popularity has soared over the years, so early enrollment is recommended.

The Chickadees have been providing education to Whitehorse juniors for many decades. Laura Davidson used to be a receptionist

for the Chickadees, and has seen her children and grandchildren go through the program.

“It’s a great way for children to prepare for elementary school. They learn to get along with other children, to focus, to follow directions, to listen,” she says.

The program started out as the Parent Participation Pre-School, and was held at the Riverdale Baptist Church. Now it’s held at the Whitehorse United Church on Main Street.

According to Davidson, “It followed a very similar format with parents taking turns helping the teacher. It was a very popular program, and parents lined up to make sure they got a spot.”

Some of the highlights of this pre-school are the interactive show-and-tell and field trips. For-

get about showing boring rocks in class, this place encourages real live pussy willows. And when it’s time to go for a spin, these kids might head over to an organic farm to learn about food production. The theory is that learning through experience is a great way to keep the kids’ attention and encourage their minds to think outside the box.

And keeping the parents involved with a handson approach is a great way to further the kids’ learning curb.

Keitha Clark is a mother of two, and both her children have been Chickadees.

“The kids learn a lot about self esteem and identity,” she says.

“They also develop a sense of belonging, and friendships.”

The program requires parents to volunteer four to five times a year.

“I really enjoyed this part. It was a great way to further bond with my child,” Clark says. “If I have a third child, I wouldn’t think twice about enrolling them in the Chickadees.”
