friend of mine turned 30 on the weekend and to celebrate about a dozen of us hiked into a couple of cabins on Rainbow Lake, 20 kilometres south of Haines Junction.

Those with snowshoes fared significantly better on the hike then those without, but I was somewhat disappointed to find that there was not a traditional pair among them.

You know the kind that I mean: they look like elongated tennis rackets, they’re meshed with rawhide and anyone that wears them just looks badass.

Instead, my friends wore these newfangled things — lightweight, small, with brand names like Tubbs.

Now I’m sure any wrinkle-shirted physics major could sit me down and explain the relative advantages of the new footwear over the old, but briefly consider Albert Johnson, the Mad Trapper of Rat River.

A few days after Christmas 1931, three RCMP officers arrived at Albert Johnson’s cabin to question him about a trap line in the region that had been tampered with.

They spotted him inside but

Johnson had no intention of talking. They left and reported his strange behaviour to headquarters in Aklavik, NWT and a four-man posse was dispatched to Johnson’s cabin to investigate the matter further.

When Constable Alfred King loudly stated that they had a search warrant, Johnson shot him in the chest. They retreated

again; King survived.

Finally a third group of nine men was sent on a raid. Upon arrival at Johnson’s abode a firefight ensued, during which Constable Edgar Millen was fatally shot.

After a 15-hour standoff the police left empty handed for a third time.

Not wanting to push his luck further, Johnson packed some supplies, strapped on his snowshoes and headed out on the land.

What followed was a five-week manhunt, during which Johnson evaded both land-bound and aerial search efforts. Finally, his luck caught up to him and he was killed near Eagle River in northern Yukon.

A lot of mystery surrounds the true identity of Albert Johnson, but of this I’m certain: he wasn’t romping through the wilderness on a pair of Tubbs.

In our quest for efficiency we are usually willing to sacrifice mystique and nostalgia. The history of footwear is no exception.

But the paint has peeled, some of the tin has blown off (and apparently been salvaged) and all the windows were broken out and boarded up years ago.

Now, after a legal struggle that began in the summer of 2011 and ended with the City buying the building rather than expropriating it, there is a chance that it may become attractive and useful once again.

The best use would be to make it a bank once more, and the restoration drawings by Greg Hakonson (who saved both the Odd Fellows Hall and the building that is now the Yukon School of Visual Arts) give me hope that something along those lines could happen.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

Miyagawa’s A Sorry State continues to garner acclaim

W

hat do you do if your family is “the most apologized-to family in Canada?” If you’re Mitch Miyagawa, local writer and filmmaker, you create a documentary about it.

Miyagawa’s documentary, A Sorry State, chronicles his family’s experience of receiving three official government apologies for historical injustices: one issued to his First Nations stepmother for the residential school program; a second to his father for the internment of Japanese Canadians during WWII; and a third to his stepfather for the Chinese head tax which was charged to each Chinese person entering Canada between 1885 and 1923.

“Obviously it was a very important story for me to explore on a personal level, with it centering on my family’s story,” says Miyagawa. “But I also wanted to explore and foster dialogue on the concept of apologies more generally. We apologize for things every day — from the insignificant to the very large — but how often do we make a real commitment to change with the words ‘I am sorry’ versus simply trying to smooth the waters? How do we make apologies meaningful?”

Miyagawa cites the leaked government memo in British Columbia focussing on fostering the ethnic vote which listed apologizing

as an electoral tactic.

“Situations like this will only lead people to view government apologies with even more cynicism than they already do,” he says.

“That said, these official government apologies still have meaning despite the justified cynicism surrounding them.”

Miyagawa hopes that his film helps viewers ask themselves hard questions about reconciliation.

“I would like to see it prompt discussion about how we as individuals help move our nation towards reconciliation instead of simply relying on the government to do it for us,” he says.

So far it seems to be doing just that. The film premiered at the Edmonton Film Festival last fall, was screened by the Yukon Film Society in November, had its television premiere on TVO in January, and will now be shown on Knowledge Network on March 26.

“It’s been really gratifying to get some positive feedback,” says Miyagawa, “After seeing the film, a number of people have reached out to me via email to let me know that they found it powerful and moving.”

And it’s not just the general public who are taking notice.

Miyagawa has been named a finalist for the Canadian Screenwriting Awards, which will be awarded on April 22.

At 47 minutes, A Sorry State

took more than three years to pull together.

“It was a long and very intense process to complete,” says Miyagawa. “Filmmaking is hugely challenging and it is much harder to change than writing if you mess something up — you can’t just scrunch up a piece of paper and do something different.

“That said, I feel very lucky for the opportunity. I had full funding for the project, great business partners, the Yukon film community was incredibly supportive, the Yukon Film and Sound Commission was great, and I feel very happy to have the project finished.”

He adds, “And of course it was a real honour to do this project with my family. My father passed away before the project was finished, so I really value the time I spent with him working on this project.”

There will be a public screening of A Sorry State to honour Anti-Racism on March 21 at the Whitehorse United Church at 7 p.m., followed by a panel discussion.

Eating Alive with Amoree Briggs

Hooray for Castor Oil Y es, I am a nutritionalist and no, you shouldn’t eat Castor oil. But it is one product that’s worth having around.

Castor oil seeds (which are removed in the process of making caster oil) are extremely toxic, but the remaining oil is applied in many cultures for a myriad of applications.

After frequently recommending castor oil as part of an integrative detoxification program, I began uncovering more uses for it such as relief from joint soreness, arthritis, back pain, acne, athlete’s foot, inflammatory bowel disease, bladder infections, and asthma. It is also helpful for wrinkle reduction and hair regeneration.

Another use for castor oil packs is treating cancerous tumours.

Interestingly enough, castor oil is used to deliver chemotherapy drugs to cancerous tumours, and can help dissolve them.

It is known for its antimicrobial action (antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal); being anti-inflammatory and an analgesic; boosting the immune system; toning internal organs; and aiding stomach secretions.

This miracle oil also has direct, positive effects on the liver, which

why it is such a powerful detoxifier.

There’s more.

When a wart appeared on my son’s finger, I didn’t want to use the wart treatments found in stores so I tried mixing a small amount of baking soda in with a few drops of castor oil to thicken it, and applied it to the wart. I bandaged the wart overnight.

The instructions for this remedy did state that the wart may not show signs of decline until after the 3-week treatment was finished. But after the first few days of treating my son’s wart, we saw an improvement. After about 10 days the wart was almost gone.

It has now been over a month that the wart has been gone and there is no sign of it returning.

It is sometimes called The Palma Christi so look out for this name too.

Instructions For Making a Castor Oil Pack Warning:

Always Eggcellent Savings!

Avoid using castor oil packs (or at least check with your doctor) if you have cramps, ulcers, haemorrhoids, diverticulitis, or have recently undergone surgery.

Supplies: • High quality, coldpressed castor oil • A hot water bottle or heating pad • Plastic wrap, sheet of plastic, or plastic garbage bag • 2-3 pieces of wool or cotton flannel • One large bath towel

Soak flannel with the oil (at room temperature) so that it is completely saturated.

Get into a comfortable position, preferably lying on your back. Put the soaked flannel on your abdomen for detoxification purposes (or other specific location) and cover it with the piece of plastic. Then place the hot water bottle on top, followed by the towel to insulate the heat.

Leave on for at least 30 minutes.

When finished, wash with soap and water to remove the oil. Pack is reusable and can be stored in a Ziploc bag. Re-apply for four consecutive days, for at least four weeks.

Faultline 49 Plays with Reality Novelist puts Yukon at the centre of war-torn Canada

I

n the novel Faultline 49, 24-year-old author Joseph MacKinnon artfully blends a gritty tale of war-torn Canada from the perspective of a journalist. The story is a fictional recasting of the events of 9/11 and it’s a premise that has a few people disjointed.

“It’s an alternate history and I wanted to explore that with this fictional author,” MacKinnon says of his decision to use a pen name.

“We all know that books sell better posthumously and I wanted to blur that line between reality and fiction just a little further.”

MacKinnon is speaking of David Danson, a character in his novel who also gets the byline credit for this publishing debut. MacKinnon, who is based in Ontario, went so far as to create LinkedIn and Tumblr accounts for his alter ego.

Danson (the character) is a journalist of the life-comingapart-at-the-seams variety. He becomes entwined with a group of rebel fighters called the Yukon Sprites after the bombing of the World Trade Centre in the oil capital of the country — Edmonton, Alberta.

“What resonates with people when you talk about National sovereignty is Arctic Sovereignty,” says MacKinnon of why Yukon features so prominently in his novel.

His preoccupation with the Yukon grew when MacKinnon’s brother visited our territory.

“After his visit, I wanted to travel the Yukon and I did, in a

way, through visual mediums like Google Maps and reams and reams of both historical and pictures of the present.”

Faultline 49 features Danson’s dispatches as he spins into the war-torn nether regions in the North. Tundra and desolation pepper the narrative, while the Sprites leader’s self-immolation drives the desperation of life during war into our periphery.

“As Canadians, we can go the street to buy X, Y, and Z but when an occupying force and curfews come into play all of these things we take for granted become far more valuable,” MacKinnon explains.

By bringing the conflict closer to home he hopes that we might reflect a little more on our consumption of war and how we interact with the media that gathers information for us.

“The ways in which these wars are depicted, the flashy intros and how they are presented, furthers the culture and rhetoric of fear,” MacKinnon says. “This feedback loop of the media perpetuates the war instead of criticizes it so it’s certainly a preoccupation of mine to bring that to people’s attention.”

For inspiration, he looked to other writers based in war-torn regions, specifically Joe Sacco, a graphic novelist and journalist from Oregon. In the dearth of sensationalist coverage he saw Sacco as a ray of hope from which to birth Danson.

“He looks at the ramifications for people. He looks at the personal impact on the micro level. That’s something that’s lacking in most reportage.”

nspiration comes in all shapes and sizes and Alanna Warner, a Whitehorse artist, recently found hers in a toy snake.

After discovering the toy, which was made from a wooden dowel and designed to replicate the movements of snake, it became the perfect symbol for Burning Away the Winter Blues, which takes place on March 24 in Whitehorse.

“It’s not like I really like snakes but I thought it would make an interesting movement and it’s also the year of the snake,” she says.

“And it’s all about transformation so I thought that it was fitting for the end of the season.”

Warner has spent the last few weeks crafting the effigy, tediously preparing a sculpture that will soon be burnt away. It’s not her first experience with temporary art; she also created the snow sculpture at the entrance of Shipyards Park during Rendezvous this year.

That piece, after slowly melting during the event, was eventually flattened back into the ground by a bulldozer.

“I really enjoy ephemeral art,” she said, while working on the project earlier this week.

“There’s a place for monuments, and a place for objects that are meaningful in the present moment and speak to the state of impermanence.”

Warner, who was born in the Yukon, recently completed a fine arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal and returned to the territory this past summer. She’s also a graduate of the carving program at the Northern Cultural Expression Society.

thing for the community makes the process more rewarding.

“I really enjoy making large scale things and it’s a fun community event,” she says. “I like the ritual of it.”

But there have been issues.

The first challenge came in designing something that was sturdy enough to be transported but light enough to carry, not to mention flammable. The end result is a mix of cardboard, paper, wire, paint, lights and hot glue. Once completed, it will be more than 20 feet (6 metres) in length and

it will require six people to carry.

After beginning the project in her apartment, she quickly ran out of space but was able to relocate to a friend’s basement.

“My dog was jumping all over it and there was stuff everywhere, so it’s been great to have this space to work on it,” she says.

The effigy has also been created from recyclable materials, another process Warner enjoys.

“When you’re a student you can’t afford the materials you would like to use so you learn to use what’s available to you,” she says.

“I enjoying designing the shapes and making mistakes, seeing what works and what doesn’t. With this piece, it’s definitely been a labour of love. I’m looking forward to getting out there with everyone and being part of the event.”

Burning Away the Winter Blues, a community event hosted by Yukon Educational Theatre, takes place on March 24, starting with a parade departing from the SS Klondike at 9 p.m. The effigy will then be marched to the Robert Service Campground, where a bonfire and entertainment will

A Mish-Mash of Clichés

Dark Skies plays at the Qwanlin Cinema

“D

ark Skies” was the title of a short-lived NBC series during the 1996-97 television season. It was a smartly designed, intriguing and timely show, which the network cancelled, ostensibly for low ratings. But constant pre-emptions virtually guaranteed the show’s demise, which may well have been the way NBC wanted it.

“Dark Skies” combined fact and fiction, blending elements like the 1947 Roswell UFO incident and the Kennedy assassination to come up with a re-interpretation of contemporary history. It was too controversial for many, but made for excellent drama.

Currently, there’s a film playing with the same name, but it lacks originality and drama, and will probably be a huge disappointment to fans of the TV series.

Both the series and the film feature aliens, but that’s where

the similarities end.

Dark Skies, the film, tells the story of Lacy and Daniel Barrett, a suburban couple with young sons, Jesse and Sam. She’s a real estate agent, and we don’t get a clear picture of what Daniel does, except that he can’t find a job in his chosen field, and has back mortgage payments hounding him.

Their youngest child begins acting strangely, wandering out into the street inexplicably at night, going into semi-catatonic states and mumbling about weird dreams featuring an entity he calls the Sandman.

One night, the home burglar alarm is triggered and a litany of horror film clichés like flickering lights, photos falling off walls and, of course, an ominous soundtrack to match, are invoked.

Fans of the television series will be disappointed with this unimaginative retread. photo: IMDb about what it all means, the couple ends up seeing a self-styled expert on paranormal phenomena, whose cluttered home is bedecked with clippings of mysterious kidnappings and abductions.

After interrogating the couple, he confirms that the mysterious rashes behind each of their ears are telltale signs of alien intervention. Here he trots out those longtime staples of UFO lore, implants and the Greys.

The Greys are tall, spindly humanoids that often feature in UFO abduction accounts. Here they are paraded as the bogey-

man, in an increasingly boring and mundane horror film narrative.

Daniel boards-up the windows to the house, and arms himself with a shotgun to fend off the impending home invasion of the Greys.

Things get sillier and sillier, and when one of their sons finally is abducted, we’re almost glad that something happened in this dreary mish-mash of a movie.

Dark Skies doesn’t do a very

good job of being either a sciencefiction piece or a horror thriller, and the time spent waiting for it to make up its mind is largely time wasted.

Dark Skies plays at the Qwanlin Cinema at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., and is rated 14A. Brian Eaton is a cinema buff who reviews current films and writes on other film-related topics on a regular basis.

There’s a new player in town

A

ndrea Pierce is a fiery creature.

She is also a beer aficionado and the new face behind the bar at the Town and Mountain lounge in Whitehorse. Pierce is responsible for the resurgence in popularity of the sleepy watering hole.

The T&M lounge now has the best beer menu in town — hands down.

Pierce has been in the industry for 15 years, most recently managing a private liquor store in Richmond. But she moved to Whitehorse in October 2012 to manage the T&M. In only a few months she put together a stellar beer list of 47 craft and specialty beers. The policies of the Yukon Liquor Corp. didn’t make this easy, but Pierce fought to ensure her clients had real choice.

She likes the challenge of convincing regulars to hold off on automatically ordering Budweiser in favour of something that will surprise their taste buds. It’s not about drinking more, but about drinking better.

While I was talking to her, somebody mentioned that Allegro restaurant now has Delirium Tremens; the beer, not the medical condition. Pierce became visibly excited.

“The more people that are doing this, the better it is,” she said. Spoken like a true beer lover.

When her first order of new beer arrived a few months ago, staff lined the 29 beers up on the bar before she got to work. They joked amongst each other: “Hey, you want to see a grown women cry.”

Cruel maybe, but kind of adorable, too.

“I get very emotional about my beer,” she says.

You would be hard pressed to stump Andrea with a craft beer she hasn’t heard of. She can also give you good advice on what to order if you’re having difficulty.

After I ruined my palate with the hop-doped West Coast Green Flash IPA, I was going to try the Lighthouse IPA, but she steered me away from it. Once you go big you can’t go back.

Instead, she suggested the Red Rocket, a hopped-up strong amber ale from Bear Republic Brewery in California.

Whitehorse interior designer helps you sort through the options

eanna Slonski has always had a flair for interior design.

“My parents owned a furniture and appliance store when I was a kid,” she says. “I worked there helping people pick out items and fitting them together – essentially I was the in-store decorator. I’ve always had a passion for it, I’ve always loved it, and I’ve always done it in some form or another.”

It’s actually been very beneficial to the work I do now – the fact that I really understand and am familiar with the building and construction process and what goes into it really helps me when I’m working on interiors.”

Slonski’s shift to applying her design skills as a business happened a year ago. “The impetus came when I started hearing about people hiring interior decorators from outside of the territory,” she says. “I’d always wanted to pursue design as a career and that gave me the push to quietly launch my business.”

At the start, her phone was quiet as she cracked open a window of time to begin fitting clients into everything else she had going on.

“At the time we were busy building my son’s house and so I was picking and choosing a small slate of projects that excited me,” Slonski says. “We finished the house at Christmas, and since then I’ve accepted quite a few more projects – it’s really nice to have a business where you can decide how busy you want to be.”

bit of interior design work. She deals with corporate, residential, and renovation settings and has done work ranging from colour consultations, furniture placement, and display windows to overhauls of entire houses.

Recently she completed the renovation of an older home downtown.

“We wanted to keep the integrity of the home while updating it to a more modern aesthetic,” she says. “We took out walls, put in a vaulted ceiling, a new kitchen and bathroom, updated the colours, re-did the floors… it was a huge project but it looked fabulous once it was finished.”

Other examples of her recent work include helping a condo owner transform her space from a “generic box” to something “that was more her own and reflected her personality and taste.” Another recent project is Volare Restaurant’s display window.

“Instinctively people know what they want but they don’t always know how to achieve it or they may lack the confidence in their own ideas to take them and run with them,” says Slonski. “My favourite part of my work is pulling out their vision and making it

a reality.”

She will be doing just that with a suite of new projects she has lined up including the new Northern Cultural Expressions Society gallery space, the High Country Inn’s lobby, and a renovation that will see a new section added to an existing house.

“It’s a really nice mix,” she says. “It will be busy, but also a lot of fun.”

Although her talent with interior design has earned her largescale projects, she is still pleased to take on small-scale projects in a modest home , as well.

“Some people may be intimidated to hire a decorator, but keep in mind that you don’t need to be doing a giant renovation – I’m just as happy to come in for a colour consultation,” she says. Yukon Housing Teaches You How Your House Works

Finally, some house-building skills to go along with your nunchuck skills

W

e live in interesting times.

International political and energy crises challenge the current North American skill-set. We must ask, ultimately, what is more useful — trapping and harvesting or operating a photocopier?

Faced with uncertainty, people seek ways to become more selfsufficient. Communities are relearning traditional skills, including carpentry, through experiments in cob, sod, wood, reclaimed materials, and off-thegrid sites.

Before the specialization of labour and colonization, home building and repair knowledge was the norm. But these days, one can purchase a sink and pay a plumber to install it — then live with that sink without ever knowing how it works, what the components are, or what to do when it clogs —except to call a plumber.

With co-sponsorship from Yukon College, Yukon Housing offers a free course for those about to renovate or build a home. It covers everything from land selection to costing and contracting in 12 sessions of three hours each.

The Self-Help Build Course, originally developed in Alberta in the late 1970s, has been offered by Yukon Housing since 1999.

Today’s version was modernized by Yukon Housing Community and Industry Partnering (CIP) director Allyn Lyon.

years ago to build the Downtown Hotel annex and then stayed here in the Yukon. He brings that background to the self-help course and teaches that “to guarantee optimum performance” of a house, it takes the alignment of all the mechanical systems.

The course is in-depth and knowledge-rich, with students that range from people working

in the trades to people aiming to live off grid, to people trying to arm themselves with enough information to be able to speak the same language as their plumber.

“It’s designed to allow people with no construction experience the path to self-build,” Hanberg says. “The knowledge gained will save you time, money, and remove the anxiety associated with

the largest financial investment of your life.”

Also geared for renovation planning, the course teaches how to anticipate and plan for hidden costs such as heating a winter build, material delivery fees and the cost of blueprints.

“An important part of the course is how to build a superefficient house affordably,” explains Hanberg. “Indoor air quality is also studied, showing students how to design healthy, sustainable homes, maximizing local building methods to build a dwelling that costs a third or less what an average home costs to heat.”

In addition to providing training and education, Hanberg and his colleagues in the CIP department also advise on indoor air quality issues such as mould or contaminants, conduct random testing and nationally certified energy assessments. Within the CIP department, Hanberg also produces videos on matters such as heat recovery ventilators, super-insulation and both the technical and social aspects of YHC’s collaboration with Habitat for Humanity.

According to Allyn Lyon, director of community and industry partnering with Yukon Housing, this costs in the range of $20,000 for an average house. He says the investment will bring the comfort of a warm home; will reduce heating costs; and will ensure that you can sell your house for a decent price down the road.

But Lyon says that’s changing.

With steadily increasing costs of energy, there will come a day when a cold, drafty, poorly insulated house with high monthly heating bills will be tough to sell.

“We’re finding more and more that curb appeal and the feeling inside the house are (still important), but the very next question people are asking is, ‘How much does it cost to heat this house?’”

Lyon says.

The next question on Lyon’s mind is, if the price of heating homes continues on its steep climb, will there come a day when the average family just can’t afford to pay their heating bill anymore?

“We’ve been thinking that people could begin to falter, not because they can’t afford their mortgage payments, but because they can’t afford their mortgage and the heating costs,” Lyon says.

Juergen Korn, senior energy advisor at Energy Solutions, says that right now a retrofit is smart option. In the future, it won’t be an option anymore.

“I believe if fuel prices keep going up, we’re going to have to do major retrofits to most of our housing,” Korn says. “There are

Yukon Housing and Energy Solutions, have been researching the energy efficiency of insulation thicknesses of 4 inches (R-10 value), 6 inches (R-20 value) and Yukon Housing’s SuperGreen standard of 16 inches (R-50 value) and how the insulation impacts the heating bill. The numbers show that the heating bills for a SuperGreen house – which will also be airtight – are less than a third of what it costs to heat a house built with 4-inch insulated walls.

Two years ago, high heating costs were one of the reasons Whitehorse resident Doug MacLean decided to increase his insulation and R-value.

“My heating bill was $5,000 per year, which is outrageous,” he says.

The tricky parts with doors and vents and other items are still in the original state. Nevertheless, he has already cut his heating bill in half.

“When we first moved in, the house was uncomfortable,” MacLean says. “We had two inches of ice at the bottom of our windows.

“Now there is quite an improvement.”

When he moved into the 1970s era house, the walls were R-12 value. Now, with 12 inches of Rockwool batt insulation they are R-56.

MacLean hasn’t added up the costs of materials since he start-

ed, but he’s got the advantage that he provided his own free labour.

Hiring a contractor adds a big portion to the cost. Bret Heebink is a contractor who builds new SuperGreen homes and does retrofitting.

“It can be quite expensive to simulate what is happening with new home construction,” Heebink says.

With a retrofit there will always be problems to solve, he says. The existing doors, windows, basement or cement slab foundation, and other structural items in the house are all obstacles to figure out how to deal with.

“With a retrofit, you have to give up on something,” Heebink says.

He recently retrofitted a duplex with a total footprint of 3,000 square feet for $60,000, extending the exterior wall with 4 inches of Styrofoam insulation.

The project also included such renovations as building overhangs onto the gables, weather-sealing the chimney, doing fine trim details and adding new siding.

“The owners wanted to do the best insulation they could and we did an analysis and we ended up adding R-20 onto the R-10 they had,” Heebink says. “So now it’s near R-30. “(What you can achieve) is so dependent on each particular house, when it was built and how it was built. It’s difficult on a retrofit to do a really good job.

Most people are like, ‘Okay, give me the best we can get.’

More Artists Heading to Ottawa

riginally from Nova Scotia, Lulu Keating often gets asked the question: “Why the hell did you move to the North?”

Her short film, Dawson Town Melted Down, to be featured at Northern Scene in Ottawa, is her attempt at an answer.

For Keating, Dawson is a town that allows space and opportunity to flourish as a writer and filmmaker.

“The isolation helps,” she says.

Explaining that film is a competitive art form, with artists competing for the same financing and grants, she likes to stay away from the “mosquito buzz” and concentrate on writing and creating.

“The most wonderful thing about Dawson is the arts community,” Keating says. While working on multiple projects, she finds the time to be active on the board of directors for Dawson City Arts Society the umbrella organization for KIAC and Yukon School of Visual Arts.

Dawson Town Melted Down was shot mostly on 16mm high-contrast negative film with a Bolex wind-up camera and was hand developed in the darkroom at the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC).

Keating learned this technique from Philip Hoffman who came to Dawson to run a workshop on the subject. She enjoys working this way because it adds an element of uncertainty.

“You never know what to expect,” she says of the method. “It’s also cheap and fun.

Keating has been writing, directing and producing documentary, dramatic, and animated films for more than 25 years. Her most recent feature film, about a woman coming of sexual age in the 1970s, called Lucille’s Ball, was shown at the Available Light Film Festival this year.

olores Anderson (nee Scheffen) is among the Yukon artists involved with Sewing Our Traditions: Dolls of Canada’s North the exhibition that is heading to Northern Scene in April.

The exhibition, which has just completed touring across Canada and to Cambridge, UK, is a collection of more than 50 handmade dolls created by Inuit and First Nations from across the Canadian North.

The exhibition was originally curated by the Yukon Arts Centre for the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad.

Anderson, who was born in Mayo and now lives in Dawson City, learned to sew and bead from her mother and grandmother at a very young age. For generations Inuit and First Nations women used dolls to teach their daughters the important skills of cutting and sewing hides and furs. To this day, the art of traditional doll-making is alive and vibrant. Modern doll-makers continue to pass their knowledge from generation to generation.

However, when Anderson made her first doll in 2009, it was the first in her community since the 1950’s. The clothing the doll wears is an example of the traditional regalia worn by the Han people when they perform their traditional songs and dances.

“I am proud to be able to carry on my culture and traditions by creating these dolls,” Anderson says. “I hope that we can continue to share our culture and traditions with people around the world through the dolls.”

With her busy touring schedule, that hope continues to be realized.

Tiffany completed her PhD in Geography and a certificate in Feminist Studies at the University of Minnesota in 2008. hen people go on trips they go online and research hotels, tours, airline prices, and things to see and do when abroad.

However, from a digital perspective, one should also consider planning for the final trip: the one that has no return flight.

As with other aspects of death, there are legal and personal implications for your digital information. It is part of your assets, and it should be managed that way.

In the case of your Facebook account, the company, if notified, will change your page to a memorial and only current friends will be able to post on it. Twitter, Google and Yahoo will deactivate your account with proper notice.

However, logon information to download or post information will usually not be accessible.

Twitter and Yahoo specifically state they will not provide this.

Google suggests it is possible, but only with a court order. A question recently arising, particularly in the U.S., is whether these policies violate existing probate laws.

The first part of planning is to ask yourself what you want your digital legacy to be. Do you want your death to be noted on your social media sites or do you wish those sites to quietly be removed?

The easiest way to deal with your sites and data is to ensure someone you trust has access to your user names and passwords for each account. This can be done by including a list with the executor of your estate.

You can then include instructions for your social pages, blogs and e-mails.

However, most social media accounts strictly prohibit providing someone else with access to your user name and password for the purposes of logging into your ac-

count as your representative.

Some services will carry on your social media existence after you pass on. These will look at your previous interactions and post links to sites similar to ones you have recommended in the past — a sort of digital immortality. I find this option a bit macabre, but you may want to investigate these.

Check out sites such as LivesOn or DeadSocial.

And if you are worried about violating your terms of use with some of your social media accounts upon your death, just remember, you can’t be held responsible.

e all have potential and vision.

Fear usually gets in the way from taking a vision to reality. For many years I had a vision for a music competition that would bring together closet musicians that have so much talent they should be on a stage. That vision came from my experience with two talented young men whose lives ended before they were able to really hone their craft – one, a neighbour, and the other, my son.

I was able to bring my vision to a reality in 2010 with the launch of the inaugural First Nation Music Competition in Whitehorse and on March 23 we’re proud to be hosting 1 the fourth annual competition.

The goal is to continue to provide a platform for First Nation musical talents and a healthy drug and alcohol-free event open to fan participation.

In the early ‘90s while I was dismantling a log house in Lower Post, BC a young neighbour came out of his house. It was a very quiet setting. The young man settled onto the steps as the door closed behind 4 him. He proceeded, as most confident musicians would, by checking the tuning of his acoustic guitar. Satisfied that it had the sound he wanted he proceeded to strum a chord progression.

You can hear the ability of a good guitar player by his strumming. He started to sing and I was immediately captivated by the music and the voice as he sang from his soul.

He did not notice he had one admiring listener. It was during this solo performance that I said to myself, “This young man needs to be performing on a stage.”

As life sometimes plays out, it was not to be. He struggled with alcohol and eventually it cut his dream short.

Life for me continued with many blessings including a son named Terry who excelled in hockey and loved music.

With kindness, he encouraged youth his age to overcome life’s struggles in a good way. His favourite music was hip-hop and he

looked up to Tupac Shakur. He saw something good in this artist.

In high school, this young man used his voice in a local radio station to reach out to many. He was always willing to play listeners’ favourites, especially music he’d never heard before. Even when they happen to be his Dad’s old favourites from the late ‘60s.

One summer, while on vacation in a southern city, we listened to the local radio station. The upbeat jingles were definitely not missed by my son – an up-and-coming radio personality. We connected with a famous rock radio station personality who could be

heard on 14 CFUN in Vancouver during the early ‘70s. He volunteered to send us a jingle and the Rocking Terry Carlick Radio Show never was the same again.

Life was looking very promising for Terry, but as life sometimes plays out it was not to be. A blessing came again in his son, TJ (Terence), and life continued.

This vision of providing a music venue for First Nation musicians came back into focus.

music events: this event was created to bring the talented First Nation performers out of their living rooms, onto a stage, and in front of a big audience. The community came together in celebration and to help lift the event off the ground including my wife Kim, who volunteered to coordinate the feast, and to my daughter Melissa, who volunteered to spread the word on social marketing sites and generated a buzz.

In memory of Rockin’ Terry Carlick, the family donated a new guitar and Jordan Hawkins from Telegraph Creek received it. This event was very modest, but it had potential.

Since that first event in 2010, we have continued to build on the success and have been fortunate to have the help of so many people in the community.

Our circle of local talent reached out to Fort St. John and Smithers B.C. and into the Northwest Territories.

There were fiddlers from Telegraph Creek B.C., and musicians from Old Crow and right here in Whitehorse.

This year, the fourth annual First Nation Music Competition will provide its usual surprises and people from all backgrounds are welcome to enjoy the music. First Nation Eagle Law is sponsoring a musician workshop and a one-hour performance by First Nation group, the Cheri Maracle Band from Toronto.

The event takes place on March 23 at Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre, with a feast sponsored by the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre from 4 to 6 p.m.

The music performances will start after the feast and could go to 1 a.m. All ages are welcome to this alcohol and drug-free event.

There’s a blanket dance in the middle of the event where you can dance in a donation if you’re enjoying yourself.

n Wednesday I went the weight room at FH Collins and saw an empty parking lot. It was spring break, but that doesn’t allow me to ditch work.

In fact, these days I’m doing as much as ever, if you can call ski training work. After a long, strenuous racing schedule I’ve finally had a chance to recover.

Back to my normal self, it was time to ramp up the training again in order to prepare for the Nationals later in March.

My long hours and hard efforts included the Yukon Championships race, which took place March 2.

I was duking-it-out with teammate Colin Abbott. I could have told you before the race it would come down to a sprint finish. Neither of us is strong enough to drop the other one, but we can make each other suffer. We barreled down the trails with saliva drooling down our faces. Maybe he took the time to spit and that’s why I nipped him at the line.

A more enjoyable ski this past

week was one up the Ascent trail at Mount Mac. We waxed our skis at the chalet and headed up the Copper trail in beautiful bluebird conditions. It was spring skiing at its best.

We passed Craig Beatty and Miriam Lukszova, who seemed to have every dog in Whitehorse accompanying them, at the start of the ascent. Craig is notorious for skiing this trail. More often than not you’ll bump into him and his white husky.

From the top we had splendid views of Lake Laberge and Grey Mountain, opposite the city. The abrasive snow wore our wax thin but it was all down hill now. We tore down the descent at blistering speeds. The bumpy trail, a popular snow machine route, was riddled with wavy depressions.

We’d either absorb the bumps or launch off them to land on the down slope of the next one — like motocross. It was a long ski and an awesome day.

month, I made time to go bison hunting with my teammate David Greer. For this trip we left the skis behind and strapped snowshoes to snowmobiles.

With some tips from expert Andy Preto, some luck, and our willingness to get our butts off the snow machines and head into the trees, we were able to bag our bison on the first day.

But we really did venture off the path, so it was quite a chore to get the beast out of the woods.

Turns out those long hours of training are helpful in a variety of ways.

Like all tools, a firearm needs a little TLC so it doesn’t let us down when we need it most. For most of the year, a routine cleaning leaving a thin film of oil, and perhaps a little grease or graphite lubricant is all that’s needed to prevent rust and keep the action working smoothly.

But cold weather can wreak havoc on that thin film of oil. The oil freezes and can lock up the moving parts in the action of the firearm. For example, the firing pin can freeze to the extent that when you release the trigger it does not move at all, or moves so slowly that the gun does not shoot.

Proper preparation for a cold weather hunt includes a cleaning that removes all oil and grease from the action of the firearm.

This can be done by soaking the bolt in solvent, or better, by tak-

If the firearm is taken into the cold while still wet, it will certainly freeze and may lock the action.

If left inside, it needs to be stored not too far from a stove or other heat source so the moisture evaporates. A better method is to put the gun in a case while still out in the cold and bring it inside to warm up slowly, so condensation does not form in the first place. If secure storage is available the gun will remain cold and will not get the condensation on it.
