ntil I was 14 years old every trip I made from Whitehorse to Vancouver included at least one doctor’s appointment. True, those trips also included an Orange Julius at the mall, and even the occasional Canucks or Lions game, but nearly two decades later the details of the sporting contests are lost on me, but my medical memories remain vivid.

I have cerebral palsy, a condition caused by brain damage during childbirth. It is more-or-less non-degenerative and my case it is on the extremely mild end of the spectrum. Still, it has rendered my left hand useless for fine motor functions and I walk with a limp.

I was diagnosed with CP when I was learning to walk at about nine months, and I had my first set of surgeries when I was one.

They cut a notch in my heelchord to improve the range of motion in my foot, and they took tendons from one part of my arm and moved them to another. My father describes watching his infant son being wheeled into the operation room as a gut-wrenching experience. He was the same age then that I am now.

Over the next 16 years I had

one disastrous appointment with a child psychologist and five or six different rounds of surgeries and castings, each of them Frankenstein-like contortions of my tendons. I stopped thinking it was cool that kids could sign my cast, and the “get well” helium balloons did nothing for me. I can’t say I never felt sorry for myself.

By the time I turned 18 and took legal responsibility for my own health I was sick of everything — sick of Vancouver, sick of doctors, sick of hospitals and sick of the patronizing way that the whole institution of Medicine seemed to treat me.

I resolved to just grit my teeth and plow forward, occasionally stumbling. Never again would I discuss my CP with a doctor; I would deal with problems and consequences by myself as they arose. For nearly 14 years I was good to my word.

However, since 1999 advancements in technology have made new and less invasive treatments available.

My roommate Jenny, a physiotherapist, alerted me to the possibility of undergoing Botox injections. She urged me to investigate the possibility for six months, and I hummed-and-hawed, making

purposefully vague statements like, “Yeah, I should look into that.”

Finally I did. Around Christmas time I got a referral to visit a physiatrist (I don’t think physiatry existed when I was a kid) from my long-time family doctor, Ron Koulton. Last week I had my first appointment with Dr. Grace Li. Botox weakens the muscles that it is injected into. Apparently this results in reduced facial wrinkles in some users, but I like to think my purposes are a little less superfluous.

Unless I concentrate on keeping it extended, my left hand automatically curls into a clenched ball. This works well for spontaneous fistfights, but it’s been a while since I’ve been in one of those. The reason for this compulsion to clench is that the muscles responsible for closing my hand overpower the ones responsible for opening it. So Dr. Li injected Botox into my “closing” muscles. Hopefully this will level the playing field.

Similarly, my left foot has a tendency to point down when I walk. Usually this means that my stride lands flat-footed on that side of my body, but when I am tired or distracted my toes often dig themselves into the turf, which causes stumbles and the occasional epic bail. So Dr. Li also injected Botox into the muscles responsible for pushing my foot down.

Now it’s a waiting game. I was told that it is often two weeks before a patient notices any change; it’s been six days so far.

But I’m paying attention. I’m waiting, watching, measuring, stretching, experimenting, and most importantly, I’m hoping.

It’s more than I’ve done in almost a decade and a half, but I guess everyone has to grow up sometime.

“They seem to be pretty calm when I play our music,” Barlow says of her twins.

Barlow and Beauliu both have classical guitar training, however Barlow’s approach is to offer songs for people who don’t have a taste for classical music. She once had an aversion to classical guitar herself and headed in a different direction, pursuing campfirebanjo, folky-pop, hillbilly music and more.

“We try to find classical pieces that have some timelessness to them; they’re really kind of pretty and dreamy,” Barlow says. “All of our music is quite gentle and dreamy, so it works well to play this at the bookstore because it’s a nice, quiet space.”

However, the trio is still challenging themselves, changing the sound to give the classical songs an unconventional treatment.

“We’re breaking rules a little bit, by taking music written for two guitars and I play a steelstring guitar (as opposed a nylon-string classical guitar), electrified, and I’ll add vibrato and sometimes Michael will add some electric bass to it or his lap steel,” Barlow says. “It makes it a little more contemporary and less formal. I like to think it makes this music more palatable to people who don’t normally listen to classical music.”

Blue Hibou are playing March 22 at Well-Read Books, located at 4137 – 4th Avenue in Whitehorse, from 8 to 10 p.m. and every second Friday thereafter until the beginning of May, depending on when the twins’ want to arrive.

Each Friday show will feature a different guest band and on March 22 it will be Soir de Semaine; on April 5 it will be Virginie Hamel.

“When I finished studying classical guitar in university, I didn’t want to have anything to do with it and started playing the banjo,” Barlow says. “It took me 20 years to start liking it again.”

Finishing university and jumping into the world to make it as a singer-songwriter, she pushed into her creativity to see what she was made of. Now her impulses have changed.

“When I was younger I had more to prove and now I just want to make something that’s beautiful,” Barlow says.

Capturing Movement with Light

Allegory photography show on exhibit at Rah Rah Gallery

W

ithin the striking photographs gracing the walls of Rah Rah Gallery one can observe the weight of the body, the wonder of illusion, and the visual tension between movement and stillness.

The show, called Allegory, is a collaboration between dancer Monique Romeiko and photographer Alistair Maitland, both based in Whitehorse.

These stunning images show the considerable technical command of both artists as they play with simplicity, body language, story and non-narrative structure.

Romeiko and Maitland became a collaborative duo this November in Whitehorse for the Brave New Works production Homeland Fusion at the Old Fire Hall — an event with the goal of bringing together artists who otherwise might not work together. Crossing disciplines, artists from many genres met with the challenges of collaboratively creating original performances.

Looking back on this shared process with Romeiko, Maitland defines the collaboration as a shared effort towards a common goal. “(Our common ground was) our openness to try different things, that there is no hard and fast or black and white,” Maitland says.

“The process was so key to the final result. As much as Monique and I were laid back about it, we still had our own visions that intertwined as time went on. I’m a visual storyteller; she makes the ab-

This tension between abstraction and story is played out through the body dancing within the frame.

“The body is always the central visual point,” Romeiko says.

“Through the body so much can be expressed. A well-trained body can embody so much, even invisibility.

Through the body music, silence, action, stillness, story, abstract images become visible. I want to tell stories —abstract yet interesting/touching/absurd stories.”

Romeiko characterizes her dance style as, “trained to the nth degree, then using those same techniques to destroy (technique).”

In keeping with Romeiko and Maitland’s differing story-telling styles, the artists invite the viewer to come to the work with her/

his own palette of stories and associations. Hence the exhibition name, Allegory.

“I chose (the name) because I have a problem with people saying they don’t understand contemporary dance and giving up on it,” she says. “The viewer can look at the photos and give them their own meaning, that’s what is important to me in dance and for these photos.”

Romeiko hopes Allegory will provoke discussion.

“It is so interesting to get feedback, especially when people haven’t encountered contemporary dance,” she says. “Everybody sees or feels something different.”

The show’s closing recepetion might be the best time to provide feedback. It takes place on April 6.

“We’ll have food and drinks available and if time, space and energy permit, I will perform,” she says. “I will probably use Paul Charpentier’s music and source from the photos or create another score. I hope to persuade Alistair to join me. Who knows, maybe it will turn into a mass contemporary dance/photography party.”

Allegory runs until Saturday, April 2 at the Rah Rah Gallery, which is located at 6169 - 6th Avenue at Strickland. The closing reception is Thursday, March 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. with performance, food and drinks.

A French Kiss With an English Twist

New play explores bilingual relationships

Approximately forty women of all ages started sharing their stories. They were invited to send in written or audio pieces, be interviewed or take part in theatre workshops designed to help collectively write the play.

After months of work on the writing process, Je parle en français and I love in English tells the stories of several generations of Anglophones and Francophones whose lives came together in the Yukon. All based on true stories, the plot explores the humour, complexity and challenges of couples raised in different languages.

The quirky misunderstandings at the beginning of a relationship can quickly turn into frustrations and may blow-up when the subject of children’s education comes around. Under Virginie Hamel’s direction, eight actors, both Francophones and Anglo-

women in the Yukon, noticed Francophones slowly losing their language across the country. She discovered some Francophone women in Alberta who started a Facebook group to practice their rusty French together. This Franco-Albertan initiative inspired Houde to create a space of expression for women who are in similar situations in the Yukon.

She came up with the idea of the bilingual, collectively written play, Je parle français and I love in English, which will be showing in Whitehorse on March 21-22 and in Dawson City on March 25.

Houde saw great story potential in relationships between Francophone women and Anglophones. She decided to make this theme the core of the theatre project.

“In my four years at Les Essentielles, I’ve never seen so much interest from the community for one of our projects,” says Houde.

“Women would call me to be in-

Some birds of a feather like to stick to their own and travel in packs. Francophones are no exception. But if you happen to fall in love with an Anglophone, you may find yourself in total English immersion, for better or for worse.

Though it may be a great way to learn a second language, at first you don’t notice how fragile your mother tongue is. Don’t let the accent fool you, only a few months of immersion is enough to start thinking and dreaming in English. Before you know it, you might not speak French for weeks or months at a time. And when you do, it won’t come easily.

Nature’s Snow Sculptures Decorate Dawson’s Buildings

M

arch 15 will see the beginning of our annual “spring” carnival, an event we call Thaw Di Gras.

One of the traditional events during this celebration is a snowcarving contest.

Some years it’s too cold for people to put in the time necessary to make a snow sculpture.

Some years there isn’t enough snow. That won’t be a problem this year.

The city contractor has been busily hauling the stuff away from the streets for weeks now, but there will be plenty left to pound into carving blocks.

I’ll wager, however, that there won’t be many creations as impressive as those hanging off many of the roofs around town.

Businesses here have had to clean off their roofs to avoid leaks

and those sudden surges I like to call roofalanches. But lots of homes and buildings around town don’t need to worry about public safety and can just let the builtup roof frosting slowly extrude over the eaves until it finally breaks off.

It can be surprising how long that takes.

The snow next to anyone’s roof tends to pack down and harden into something like ice, especially if it’s got 30 to 50 centimetres of newer snow sitting on top of it.

Most of our snow is pretty fluffy when it comes down, but the combination of the breeze and increasing amounts of sunlight compacts the surface layers and turns it into something resembling Styrofoam.

Gravity does the rest. The inner layers of the snow covering even-

tually head for the ground, sliding across the ice layer and under the firmer surface until they seem to squirt out from the roof lines — after which they are affected by the same sun and breeze that hardened the layer above them.

The most striking example of this around town is the garage next to Stringer House, the Anglican Church rectory. The snow load there has sagged down over the open garage door like a blanket draped over the front of the building.

I’ve touched it. It’s quite firm and won’t fall for some time yet, unless it gets whacked with a shovel.

There’s a similar, but not quite so dramatic, overhang at the Dawson office of the Yukon Environmental and Socio-Economic Assessment Board office, and an-

These overhangs look as if someone has been having fun with a large bowl of white icing.

Look closely at any of these and you can determine the individual thicknesses of the various snowfalls as if they were rings on a tree. The thickness tells you how much snow fell a given time relative to other snow lines on the same overhang.

At Berton House, the alignment of the benches and interpretive plaques in the viewing station at

the foot of the lawn make it look as if a couple of snowmen have arrived to take a look at the house where Dawson’s famous native son spent his early years.

On a sunny day it’s fun to wander around town and see what interesting sights the changing season provides.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

rom April 25 to May 4 artists from across Northern Canada will take over the nation’s capital in a celebration of our finest emerging and established artistic talent.

Northern Scene will feature more than 250 artists in 50 events at 26 venues over 10 days.

Selected participants will come from the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik, and Nunatsiavut, representing a multitude of artistic genres and creating a living portrait of our unique region.

The idea stems back to 2001. That’s when the National Arts Centre made it a priority to put the “National” back in National Arts Centre. The first showcase was 2003’s Atlantic Scene, followed by Alberta, Quebec, BC, and Prairie Scenes every two years.

Last week the National Arts Centre released the official program online and with a live show in Ottawa featuring a selection of participating artists.

I caught up with producer and executive director Heather Moore to learn more.

What’s Up Yukon: There is incredible talent in Northern Canada. How did your team choose who would be best to represent the North?

Heather Moore: We spent a lot of time researching, attending shows, meeting artists and talking to lots and lots of people from the North. And travelling. We wanted to make sure we weren’t programming a festival

from afar, and falling into stereotypes. We had great help from the passionate people in the regions, such as the folks at the Yukon Arts Centre, the Adäka Cultural Festival and others. We developed a pretty big list, and from there we tried to balance the established artists with the emerging, the traditional with the contemporary and throw in a few less usual suspects.

WUY: What strikes you most about arts and culture in the North?

HM: When asked about Northern Scene here, I tell people to expect the unexpected. I think audiences will be inspired by how contemporary and vibrant the arts scene is in the North. And how diverse.

WUY: What act/exhibit are you most excited to catch?

HM: I can’t possibly pick just one, but I can’t wait for The Grub-Stake Revisited, the live performance/screening of Nell Shipman’s 1923 silent film that a group of Yukoners have re-imagined with a new score by Daniel Janke (Whitehorse) and new dialogue, all taken from Shakespeare. It’s a wacky idea that’s had huge success and we’re thrilled to have it at Northern Scene.

WUY: How many attendees do you expect to take part in the action?

HM: Previous “Scenes” have attracted audiences in the tens of thousands, and we expect the same for Northern Scene.

yn Fabio is hard at work preparing for Northern Scene. The fibre and mixed-media artist finds herself in her Whitehorse studio daily.

“I tend to work really intensely in the lead-up to a show, and then not nearly as much in the intervening periods,” she explains. “My last show was in 2011 and so it’s refreshing to be back working on art on a continuous basis for a few months.

“Sometimes it’s a bit frustrating too – when you’re working with so much intensity I find that you get flooded with new ideas, but you don’t always have time to explore all of them as you have to finish the work you’ve already started.”

Fabio works with hog gut to create vessels and miniature garments inspired by the seal-and-walrus intestine clothing of the far North.

“For Northern Scene I’m creating a series of vessels, pouches, and miniature garments,” she says. “One piece will be a miniature hog gut parka trimmed with polar bear fur in honour of the style of clothing that originally inspired me to do this work.”

Fabio’s work with the Canadian Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik for the last 12 years and the Adӓka Festival in Whitehorse for the previous two years has led her to develop connections with artists across the North. She is very excited to be re-united with many of this Northern family in Ottawa.

“Although it is a bit stressful right now preparing for the show, I’m sure the joy will come when I’m in the midst of Northern Scene, seeing the work of so many amazing northern artists,” she says.

arah MacDougall, who was born and raised in Malmö, Sweden, began her first band at 11.

“My friend Sarah and I had a duo called Sarah and Sarah,” MacDougall says, laughing.

In 2000, the 19 year-old MacDougall moved to Vancouver and began to take her career more seriously, recording her songs and touring. While playing a music festival, she met Yukoner Gordie Tentrees who invited her on tour with him. She returned the favour by arranging Tentrees’ European tour, including gigs in Sweden.

She eventually settled in the Yukon, where, recording with Bob Hamilton at Old Crow Studio, she finished her album The Greatest Ones Alive, which went on to win the 2012 Western Canadian Music Award for Best Solo Roots Recording.

The album has been receiving positive reviews across Canada, Europe and has recently been released in South Korea.

“I think the landscape of the North inspires me,” she says of her songwriting. “Animals, things around me and things I observe. People, love, pain.”

Chosen as one of the artists to represent the Yukon at Northern Scene in Ottawa, MacDougall is looking forward to the show.

“It seems like a really cool stage,” she says. “I’m looking forward to hearing other artists and playing with the whole band again.”

Joining MacDougall will be the Yukon’s Bob Hamilton, M.J. Dandeneau from Winnipeg on bass, Tim Tweedale from Vancouver on slide steel, and Shawn Killaly from Toronto on drums.

“We’re a national band,” she says.

iyet van Lieshout comes from a family of musicians, singers and great storytellers. Her paternal grandmother was a Japanese opera singer and dancer and her maternal greatgrandfather was an Southern Tutchone singer and dancer. It’s no wonder that she has been drawn to music, song writing and performing her entire life.

Born and raised in Burwash Landing, Diyet is a classically trained singer with a degree from the University of Victoria. Since the release of her debut CD The Breaking Point in 2010, she has had a busy couple of years touring and working towards the release of her second album, due out in May. “The new album is braver than The Breaking Point,” says Diyet. “This album is in line with many of the shifts that are happening on a global scale. So it’s definitely an album of the times.”

Diyet also had the fortune to travel to Greenland this past summer as part of the tour for A Circumpolar Soundscape, which also toured to Denmark and northwestern Canada. The show is a unique collaboration between four distinct and highly creative female Aboriginal artists from across the North.

But that’s not all for Diyet- she’ll also be opening for Susan Aglukark as part of Northern Scene.

Seventy Yukon artists prepare to invade Ottawa WUY: With the exception of Ontario, all the regions in the country have now been showcased. What are the future plans for the “Scenes”?

HM: Ontario will happen in 2015, and we are planning a Canada Scene for 2017-the Sesquicentennial.

From the distinctly original and much loved old timey folk duo Old Time Machine (Whitehorse) to the culinary delights of the Boreal Gourmet Michele Genest’s (Whitehorse) wild food fusions, Northern Scene is widely diverse.

Yukon is also fortunate to be home to an extraordinary array of First Nations artistic talent. Special highlights at Northern Scene include the Spirit of the Drums performance, which will feature eight drumming groups from across the North, including the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers (Whitehorse/Carcross) and the Kaska Dena Drummers (Ross River/Watson Lake).

New Film Gives a Child’s Eye Perspective on Residential Schools

The film We Were Children is a visual narrative of residential school survivors’ experiences.

enerations of First Nations Peoples across Canada are still trying to come to terms with experiences they and their families had in residential schools.

A new film called We Were Children is a visual narrative of residential school survivors’ experiences. At the heart of the film are the real-life experiences of two survivors, Glen Anaquod and Lyna Hart, from Muscowpetung First Nation, Saskatchewan and Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, Manitoba, respectively.

The stories are re-enacted using school-age actors, giving the viewer the poignant perspective of seeing the stories unfold through a child’s eye.

We Were Children will be broadcast on Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN) on March 19.

Lisa Meeches, from Long Plain First Nation in Manitoba, is the executive producer of the film. I caught up with her to discuss the new film and ask about the production process.

Sheldon McRae: What inspired you to produce We Were Children?

Lisa Meeches: Initially, we pitched it to conventional broadcasters. Some of the responses we received were like, “This didn’t happen, this is too much.” I realized the story had to be told.

SM: How long was the film in development?

LM: We Were Children was in development for almost seven years. It was a challenge finding a

broadcaster to air the film because of the intensity of the subject matter. I was fortunate enough to have APTN work through it with us and massage it.

SM: Why did you pick the two survivors in the film to share their stories?

LM: We selected Glen and Lyna because of where they and their families were at in their healing journeys. Lyna and Glen took on a huge responsibility sharing their testimonies, and knowing their families were supportive was very important.

SM: How was it coaching the Cree language to the cast?

LM: It’s fun teaching young people, especially when it comes to language. It’s new words and sounds for them, and they had a good time. They picked up on it immediately; it was like they were meant to speak Cree.

SM: What type of impact on the audience were you intending by using the format of interviews combined with dramatization?

LM: That this really happened to Lyna and Glen, like the thou-

sands of other survivors. All of the stories had commonalties, whether from the East Coast, West Coast or North. Strangers can’t make up similar stories.

There’s two parts when producing a film like We Were Children: the interviews and dramatic re-enactments. It’s quite an extensive and well thought out process. When you film the dramatic re-enactments it’s a year or two later, and they were shot over a year. They were exactly what the survivors told us.

SM: You had an Elder on set for smudging the cast and crew. Was this a decision based on the subject matter, or is this a practice you implement during your productions?

LM: We started with a pipe ceremony every day. You want to make sure when you are dealing with this kind of subject matter, you have to be that much more aware of the spiritual assurance.

This film opened up a lot of things.

We knew there were many children who didn’t make it home from these schools. We had to consider them, feed their spirits and acknowledge them.

I implement smudging whether my films cover an Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal topic.

We Were Children premieres March 19 at 9 p.m. Central Standard Time on APTN North.

Kim Beggs and friends tour the Yukon this month

uring the past decade Whitehorse musician Kim Beggs has toured throughout North America and even hopped the pond to Denmark.

This March, however, she is organizing a very different kind of road show — one that takes place right here in the Yukon.

of Denmark. The three songwriters are currently traveling throughout the Yukon, playing shows and house concerts in Atlin, Haines Junction, Keno City, Dawson, Whitehorse and Marsh Lake, among others.

For Beggs, who organized a similar event in 2011, the songwriter tour is a chance to travel the territory and share music and artists she appreciates.

“It’s great to bring music that I have discovered up and share it with the Yukon,” she says, “And also to bring exposure to these artists and help them build their fan base in the Yukon so they can come back again.”

Both MC Hansen and Linda McRae already possess impressive resumes. MC Hansen, a Danish, self-described guitar-slinger, plays with The Sentimentals, a backing band that tours with folk music greats like Jonathan Byrd, Ana Egge, Matt Harlan, Dana Cooper and Sam Baker.

Linda McRae hails from Canada, though she is now based out of Tennessee. She left Spirit of the West, in which she played bass and accordion for eight years, to pursue her solo career.

Beggs has worked with both

artists previously.

“MC Hansen and Linda McRae are both artists that I’ve come across frequently – and have really appreciated their music and their artistic contributions and also their spirit,” Beggs says. “They’re just really awesome people.”

She’s confident the Yukon audience will appreciate Hansen and McRae. “I think that their writing is amazing and inspiring, and their performances are inspiring as well,” she says. “I think that Yukoners have a real appreciation for great songwriting.”

Beggs will be playing music from her self-titled solo project, including songs from her upcoming fourth album. “[This tour] also gets me to

I like to convey emotion; I like people to feel things.”

While each artist will perform solo, Beggs also anticipates getting on stage together.

“We will also be doing some collaboration, whether it’s sharing harmonies or having some instrumental backup for each other,” she says.

The Triple Songwriter Series

will be playing March 14 in Keno City; March 16 Dawson City; March 20 in Whitehorse; and March 21 in Marsh Lake.

Zoe Verhees studied dance at York University and is back home in the Yukon and offering improvisation dance classes at the Marsh Lake Community Centre.

s a dancer, I often hear people say, “Oh, I wish I were a dancer,” or “I wish I had studied dance as a kid,” or “I don’t know anything about dance.”

I encourage people to dance, to attend dance performances, to dance in the living room, to sign up for a dance class and to dance in any old place at any old time.

It’s never too late.

And a golden opportunity to dance has recently arrived in Marsh Lake in the form of guided improvised dance classes offered

by Yukon dancer Zoe Verhees.

Verhees, a recent graduate from the dance program at York University, grew up studying dance in Whitehorse at Northern Lights School of Dance and Leaping Feats/Danceworks Inc.

PHOTOS: Jessie Leschart In 2006, Verhees enrolled in the Main Dance Bridging Program in Vancouver where she trained for one year before returning to Whitehorse to dance and work as a teacher and administrator at Leaping Feats.

“What I love most about dance is that it is the most complete form of expression for me,” Verhees says. “Dance is so physical and mental at the same time.”

Verhees began her university level studies at York in 2008, where an instructor’s strike prolonged her period of study but also gave her unexpected opportunities.

cers Melissa Kwok and Nick Robinson and with former Yukoner Rodney Morgan as choreographer.

But it hasn’t all been easy.

“In the past year, I was diagnosed with a spinal injury that is common from overuse and found with dancers, gymnasts and martial artists, but I’m slowly working through this to find new ways of moving to suit my recovering body,” she says. “Since moving back to the Yukon, I am developing ways to keep dance in my life and create new opportunities for myself and other trained dancers.”

Part of this creative process is to teach.

“Through my guided dance workshop, I hope to open people to the wonderful feeling of dancing not in a typical class struc-

ture, but with exercises and play, tapping into our own natural way of moving that most people ignore in our day to day life,” says Verhees. “Improvising is so wonderful because it is the base of all dance movement. That’s the way we all start dancing and is also a valuable tool for building new and interesting choreography.”

Newcomers to dance are welcome in Verhees’s classes.

“I know people who aren’t ‘dancers’ can get intimidated by taking formal dance classes, but they shouldn’t be by these classes as you work to your own limit and I am there to facilitate the individual discoveries,” Verhees says.

“Teaching un-trained dancers is very important to me because I believe our society has conditioned us to be so disconnected

from a strong mind-body relationship that we can get injured from sitting at a desk. As a chronic injured dancer, I had to negotiate a way to keep dance in my life and I think that by sharing my love and experience in dance with others, I still maintain a strong connection.”

Verhees plans to continue to develop these classes and hopes to offer more in Whitehorse as well. For now, catch the improvised dance wave while you can; classes run Saturdays from Feb. 23 until March 16, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Marsh Lake Community Centre. Classes are $10 each.

hile we were waiting for Comet PanSTARRS to arrive in our skies, we had a chance to get up to the Grey Mountain lookout point. We have not been out to this observation site yet this year, so I was a little apprehensive about the road.

But the road is reasonably well ploughed, and was fine even in a small car.

Our favourite weather websites, including Whitehorse Clear Sky Clock, all agreed that there would be three hours of clear, cloudless, sky.

The weather computers were having an off day, and with a full moon there was not going to be much in the way of observing deep objects like galaxies, and nebulas.

The moonlight was bright enough you could read a star chart without a flashlight.

A full moon is about the worst time for viewing through any kind of telescope. That being said, it was a great sight, and it gave me a chance to try out my side-by-side mount, which is when you mount two telescopes together: one being used as a guide scope, and the other one with camera attached to it for long exposure photography.

This technique also lets you observe the same object in two different telescopes, at two different magnifications. For example, in one telescope you can see the entire Orion Nebula, and surrounding region of space, while in the other you can look into the Trapezium star cluster, an actual star factory deep inside the Orion Nebula itself.

Jupiter was nicely placed in the night sky with four visible

moons. Due to the full moon the cloud bands on Jupiter could not be seen, but it was still a curious sight.

We had been on site less than an hour when a big black wall of clouds made itself known, and began to move into our viewing area.

I quickly grabbed my camera and snapped a few pictures of the moon. Even though the clouds were moving in, the pictures turned out as good as could be expected.

And now for the most hyped comet of the year, Comet International Scientific Optical Network (ISON), discovered by two Russian astronomers in September 2012.

Presently it is out by Jupiter’s orbit and appears to have a 5 kilometre chunk of rock at its core.

On November 28, this comet will fly through the Sun’s atmosphere a little more than 1,000,000 kilometres from the Sun’s surface.

If the comet survives, it will reemerge with a huge tail that could be bright enough to be seen briefly in daylight. Many people are calling it the comet of the century, although it’s little bit early to tell yet.

Sometimes the Sun destroys the comet entirely with solar radiation, and sometimes they just fizzle out.

By November Comet ISON should be visible underneath the constellation of Virgo and then by the end of November, heading northward from the constellation of Ophiuchus to the constellation Bootes, and Ursa Minor, also known as the Little Dipper.

Comet PanSTARRS is now visible to the unaided eye in the

southern hemisphere. For people living below the equator it is disappearing off the horizon, and will soon enter the northern hemisphere. Hopefully we will get some great views, and some amazing photos.

First, the little snowball has to survive the trip around the Sun without disintegrating.

Keep your binoculars and telescopes dusted off. With all this nice warm weather there are plenty of opportunities to view the cosmos in comfort.

An Exciting Encounter

A muskrat takes a January stroll

made a new friend.

That day in January when the temperature reached an incredible 10ºC I went to the lake behind our house, Moose Skull Lake. I was going to check if there was water on the ice.

On the other side of the lake I could see water. On the south side the snow on top was mushy, but the ice underneath was solid. Suddenly I saw a black creature on top of the water on the opposite side — a rat-like creature. It must have been a muskrat.

Some winters I have seen one or two muskrats on this lake. But not like on the 911 Pond, where there are clearly many muskrats, as there are always plenty of push-ups on the ice. The muskrat builds these push-ups from aquatic plants to keep an insulated breathing hole in the ice. The push-up resembles a beaver lodge, only smaller.

Muskrats need open water to survive the winter. I always assume that Moose Skull Lake freezes to bottom, because it is shallow and small. I had often wondered if muskrats make it out here in the summer only to perish in the winter. Not so; it was proven that day.

I decided to get as close to the muskrat as I could, not only for a photo, but to find clues as to where it lives in the winter.

I did not break through the deteriorating ice and I got some good photos, clearly seeing it’s flat tail,

bare feet and surprisingly cute little face. What a treat.

I followed its tracks and eventually they led me to land. The lake is surrounded by swamp and forest. The swamp has lots of grassy knolls, natural levies, standing dead trees, fallen trees and a jumble of uneven ground.

Here there is often glaciation and little pools of open water, even in winter. Maybe water is always seeping in from the mountain.

Each time the trail seemed to end, I was fooled, thinking, “Oh, maybe that is where it lives?” But the trail kept going, even tunnelling under the snow at times. My little buddy has made lots of tracks this morning, there are trails going in every direction. Finally when I came out at what I call Blue China Swamp – currently a watery, wideopen expanse, but in the summer a grassy, wet meadow – the tracks cease.

All signs of the muskrat were covered in snow.

I assume these periods of warm weather in the winter can be hard on animals and nature in general, but I hope all is well for the muskrat, it was probably happy to go for a long walk in the water in the middle of winter, just like me.

hen Alt Altman, aka Digits, had the chance to participate in the Dawson City’s Songwriter in Residence program in February, he jumped at the opportunity.

“I knew someone who had already done it and they said to absolutely do it,”says Altman. “I heard lots of good things about Dawson. It seemed like a once in a lifetime chance.”

Since 2006, the Dawson City Music Festival has operated a residence program with the support of the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture. Each year, the program brings one songwriter to Dawson City for a month-long stay where the artist receives living and studio space at the historic Macaulay House.

While in Dawson, Altman had been developing new material, sharing his skills and hosting music production classes for youth.

Altman is an electronic pop musician. While there are many styles of electronic music, he describes his sound as gloomy.

“There is no happy Digits,” he says with a smile. “Just moody.”

He chose the name Digits because it seemed suitable for electronic music.

“I liked the name and you can

understand it in many languages,” he says.

Born and raised in Toronto, Altman is currently living in Berlin after six months in London. Although he says he’s not leaving Canada behind, there is more opportunity to play electronic music in Europe.

“There are more clubs and festivals, and everything is closer together,” he says. “This is the first year that I’m actually making a living as a musician.”

Altman goes on stage with two synthesizers, a laptop for a backbeat, a pedal to layer the keyboards, and a vocal mike. During the last six months, he’s added in another vocal mic for looping harmonies.

Altman records and releases his own music. In April 2012, Digits released a 12-song mix-tape of original material called Death and Desire. It instantly found an audience.

The Where Do You Belong EP was then released in July under an experimental distribution model: a free download link was given to anybody that e-mailed Digits evidence of purchasing music from any other musician in the past two months.

“Music shouldn’t be a commodity, and I think it’s silly to claim that we should hold on to an old model where people must pay a precise amount corresponding exactly to each song they listen to or download,” says Altman.

People should be buying at least some recordings to support the industry in general, he says, but he doesn’t want to prevent anyone from listening to his music by charging for every song.

Yet, despite offering his music free, fans are still willing to pay for his albums.

“People are choosing to support me,” he says. “They know there are no labels involved and that all the profits go directly to the musician. It makes for a deeper connection between me and the fans.”

Here in Dawson, he found the creative atmosphere inspiring.

“This is just the beginning,” he says. “I’ll be back someday.”
