he band Trifolia does not waste a minute of their time, nor yours. Barely a year after their first steps as an instrumental trio, they are releasing the album Refuge and going on a cross-Canada tour. They’ve already showcased their compositions at the renowned German jazz festival, Jazzahead.

On Jun­­­­­e 18, Trifolia will kickstart their tour in the Yukon’s capital.

Trifolia is Marianne Trudel on piano, accordion and vocals, Etienne Lafrance on double bass and Patrick Graham on percussions.

“We all come from very different musical backgrounds,” explains band leader Marianne Trudel. “I’m a jazzwoman, Etienne plays for the Québec Symphonic Orchestra and Patrick is a Japanese and Arabic percussions specialist. This eclectic mix creates a very unique sound and allows us a great sense of freedom as musicians.”

Trifolia is a place for these three high-calibre musicians to

let their creativity run completely loose. Even though it’s very influenced by jazz, this trio doesn’t fit in any precise genre.

“We play with different styles, sounds and rhythms without ever censoring ourselves.” says Trudel.

In this creative environment, the piano player decided to give her keys a break and pick up an accordion for the first time.

“I also started singing by mistake,” Trudel says, laughing. “I was humming along to a song during an improv one day and the accordion microphone picked up my voice. Etienne and Patrick loved it! As a result, I sing on a record for the first time of my career.”

Spontaneity is a major part of the band.

“Improvisation is what I strive for. I compose in a way to leave lots of room for what the present moment will bring to the songs.” explains Trudel. “There is nothing like stepping on stage not knowing what’s going to happen once you start playing.”

The three band members are comfortable with each other be-

cause they were musical accomplices before this trio.

“We met playing together in another musical project and we hit it off. Playing and improvising together comes so naturally.”

The word Trifolia is often applied to a plant with three leaves growing from one common stem.

If you know a few French words, you already know it also suggests they might be a bit crazy.

In a good way.

Trifolia plays Tuesday, June 18 at the Old Fire Hall. There is an artist’s talk titled “What is this thing called jazz?” from 5:30 ­ — 7:00 p.m., free admission, followed by the show and Yukon CD release at 7:30.

ob Hunter, also known as Roxx, has been abroad a few times, traveling to Finland, Mali and Oman. Most recently, the globetrotting guitarist spent six months in Shanghai, China, playing in a five-star hotel’s house band.

“I first heard about this overseas work from this cool hippie-ish singer named Alex who was working at Unitech,” Hunter explains.

“He said I should go travel and play and told me all about this circuit which is mainly the Middle East, India and Asia, basically

Hunter relates some advice he got from friends before he left.

“They said, ‘you’ve got a new start in a new city and nobody knows who you are, so like be a rock star, show them that you belong there, that there’s a reason why you are who you are.’

“So I definitely made sure to dress the part.”

Wearing cheap sunglasses, a leather jacket and his trademark scarves, Hunter played lead guitar to appreciative crowds.

“The Chinese people are pretty enamoured with Western music, because it’s pretty new to them,” he says. “Like they don’t know blues very much but they like it.

They’re getting into rock. ‘Hotel California’ was the most requested song.”

At the hotel where he was employed, Hunter also played for a western audience.

“They were all middle-aged businessmen, you know, from Europe and North America, which is cool because sometimes there’d be CEOs of Fortune 500 companies,” he says.

One such executive was envious Hunter for following his dream to be a professional musician.

“I was like, ‘you have a house, you have food and you have like a wife and kids, you have lots of money, you have a Ferrari back home. I’m homeless, I’m broke and I’m in China.’ It was really weird, I’m jealous of (him).”

In Shanghai, the place to go after a hard day’s night is The House of Blues and Jazz, where

musicians playing the hotels or just passing through Shanghai congregate after-hours.

“It was kind of like the Gold Rush or Taku in China,” he says.

“Some of the people on this scene are really, really good musicians and like they’ll just casually mention how they played Letterman and Leno and stuff, backing up some famous artist.”

Among the musicians he met were two musicians who backed both the Temptations and Stevie Wonder.

“They were just awesome,” he says. “I got up and jammed with those guys and I was totally humbled. I know nothing. They were on a whole other level of amazing, just amazing.”

There were some unusual things about Shanghai that took getting used to: the crowded sidewalks and subways, the smells, crooked cabdrivers and especially the air. He describes the first time he noticed it: “I thought it was rain clouds.

And I’m like, ‘the clouds came in quick.’ And then all of a sudden I just start coughing and I’m feeling really ill, and that is smog. I literally couldn’t see ten feet in front of me.

“All the little kids have smoker’s cough and they don’t smoke.

And then they’re like, ‘Oh you’ll get used to it.’ Awesome. I’m going back to Whitehorse.”

T

he event that led to the formation of the Yukon occurred on August 16, 1896: it was the discovery of gold on what was then called Rabbit Creek.

However, it took the government of the Dominion of Canada a bit of time to realize that it needed to stake its own claim to this slice of

the Northwest Territories, before the largely American influx of gold seekers pulled the same sort of annexation stunt that had already been worked in Texas, New Mexico and California.

So the Yukon Territory was born as a separate political entity on June 13, 1898.

This is why we get to celebrate two natal days every summer.

On the second weekend in June the Commissioner of the Yukon sallies forth from the current capital city to hold two events in the Yukon’s original capital.

The Commissioner’s Tea is jointly hosted by the IODE and Parks Canada on the lawn and spacious veranda of the original Commissioner’s Residence, which Parks now owns and has restored.

The Commissioner presides over the fun, free, and well-attended event. It features speeches about the wonders of the territory, musical performances, and the presentation of various special service awards. It is a success even when it rains.

It is intended to hearken back to the garden parties that Martha Black used to hold when she was

the chatelaine of the mansion, so the servers and some of the guests dress in informal period costumes.

This year’s event will be the 38th in an unbroken string since 1975.

In the evening the Palace Grand Theatre gets to shine in its former glory at the Commissioner’s Ball.

The ball is fairly pricey to attend because the Commissioner’s Office doesn’t have a lavish budget. Typically a high percentage of both the party in power and the opposition parties make a good showing at this event.

This is a costume ball, and most people attend in period formal wear. If you think the tickets for

the evening are expensive, add on the cost of renting or purchasing an outfit.

What’s most spectacular about this event is the sight of all those suits and dresses posing for pictures outside the grand façade of the theatre. That’s the show we put on for all the locals and tourists, who come out in quite large numbers to capture the old fashioned memory on modern flash cards.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

Pelly Dancing Forty-five Selkirk youth keeping traditional dance alive

fter their initial inception, the Selkirk Spirit Dancers had a hiatus, and some wondered if they would ever dance again.

Started by Carmen Baker, the dance group is based in Pelly Crossing and is now comprised of 45 dancers.

The large number in itself is enough to set the group apart, however what makes the Selkirk Spirit Dancers unique is that the

The group is founded on the belief that although sports and trips are good for the youth, the kids in Pelly Crossing need something more — a spiritual connection to their heritage and community — to keep them away from drugs and alcohol.

Because the group is so large, Carmen enlisted the help of her friend Terri Lee Isaac.

Isaac has noticed a difference in the youth since the dance group started.

The quest for keeping sled dogs fit continues through the summer

W

e know what competitive sled dogs like to do in the winter, but what happens to them in the summer?

Brian Wilmshurst of B-Line Racing Kennels has run the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race twice in the five years he has owned sled dogs. He says his 40 dogs are on holiday during the summer, but “when you’re competitive, you still have to train, no matter what the season.”

But compared to winter, summer training runs are like going out for a stretch.

“It’s relaxed and fun,” says Wilmshurst.

Wilmshurst uses a four-wheeler to go for one to two mile runs, three times per week. He calls them maintenance runs.

“It keeps them in shape and makes it easier to get going with training in the fall,” he says. “It also keeps them in the mindset of wearing a harness. They’re excited to run and it’s important to keep their minds happy too.”

Wilmshurst goes on three different runs, with eight to 10 dogs each time. Each run lasts about 20 minutes.

Things move faster on the weekends when his partner, Melissa Atkinson, is home. She usually has the next team harnessed up and ready to go, and puts the previous team away as Wilmshurst heads out again.

He tends to go early in the morning or late at night, when the cooler temperatures are easier on the dogs. He makes sure that they get plenty of water when they return, and lets them cool off in the shallow pond near his dog yard.

Back at the doghouse, the pooches can rest in the shade under patio umbrellas, donated by a local hotel.

On weekends, while he and Atkinson are outside doing chores, they let the dogs run free in the dog yard.

“We let off five to six at a time,” says Wilmshurst. “If they’re bad, they get tied up, if they’re good they get off more often — they learn real quick.”

Wilmshurst and Atikinson are also training for a marathon and will bring a dog along when they go for a run.

“We use either a leash or a skijoring belt,” says Atkinson. “But since we’re training, we take the dogs that will run alongside us, not ones that pull too hard — it’s

easier for us to train that way.”

Once August rolls around the training becomes more serious.

Runs on the four-wheeler slowly start to lengthen, going from two, to five, to 10 miles, and so on, in order to start building the dogs up for competition.

And once the snow comes, the

holiday is definitely over.

Poland: More than just beautiful women M

y neck still hurts from visiting Poland, but it’s my stomach that really aches to go back…

I visited Poland in 2011 to attend the World Gold Panning Championships with my brother. My expectations for this trip were that it would be like setting foot in communist Russia. I kept envisioning myself in scenes from Rocky IV: dodging stoic guards strapped with AK-47s, passing babushkas in mule driven carts, or eating stale bread and sipping on bland borscht. The reality was far from what I envisioned.

To get there, we flew from Whitehorse to Krakow via Frankfurt with Condor. Passing over the barren Arctic, eating decent food (for an airline) and getting to Europe in less time and for less money than it takes to get to Toronto, was in itself, an amazing experience.

Poland, simply put, is a beautiful country, and Krakow, is its gem. One stroll into the Rynek Glowny, the oldest medieval square in Europe, and you’ll fall for it too. The cobblestone streets, the art galleries, the historical buildings, outdoor terraces and most noticeably: throngs of beautiful women.

In my entire life I have never seen so many gorgeous women. It seemed like I couldn’t walk five feet without seeing the most beautiful woman in the world walking with the second and third most beautiful woman in the world. They were everywhere! You think you’re imagining things when you notice every other tourist doing the same double takes as they wander through town. While visiting Krakow, I developed a kink in my neck that still hurts today. But enough of the things you can’t have.

Although women and architecture were a great introduction to Poland, it’s the people we met; their culture and traditions that make me want to go back today.

While Poland may not be known as a foodie’s paradise like Italy or France, for normal guys like my brother and I, it was heaven. Unpretentious, filling and inviting, Polish people and food are really as down to earth as it gets. As one Pole told us, Polish food could be described in the following saying: “eat, drink and loosen your belt”. It’s comfort food at its best.

Here are a couple of things you should know about Polish food: 1. Portions are huge. My brother and I once ordered a meat platter that was listed as an appetizer that required two servers to bring it out. This heaping mound of meats must’ve weighed 10 pounds. It was ridiculous, but it was delicious.

2. Vegetarians beware. It’s nearly impossible to find a meal that doesn’t include pork. No piece of the pig goes untouched. Pork hocks, head cheese and sausages can be had for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

3. Don’t tell your doctor. One of our meals consisted of smalec, basically fried pork fat topped with crackling (pork skin) that you spread on bread. It was, as you can imagine, amazing.

4. Be prepared to drink your face off. No meal is enjoyed without a pivo (beer) and “Nazdrovie!” is fun to say. The more you say that, the more you drink. And with over 1000 varieties of vodka (just a guess), you’ll have to try a few.

When we arrived in Krakow we took it in fully, but we stuck to the tourist trap restaurants that catered to English speaking folk. We even ate at the oldest restaurant in Poland, built in 1234. King Winceslas ate there. It was good, but it wasn’t anything to sing a carol about. cont’d on page 13...

Poland: More than just beautiful women... cont’d It wasn’t until we got away from the throng of beautiful women and visited Babci Molina’s in Old Town Krakow that we got a true experience of Polish hospitality and culture.

Babci Molina translates to Grandma’s Raspberry. The name really says it all. It’s like eating at your Grandma’s place, if your Grandma is very Polish. The walls are clad in boas. Chandeliers hang from the ceiling. A chamber singer belts from an antique radio.

It’s not the typical place you would expect to hang out as a couple of twenty-something year olds.

The servers here were Polish and female, so they were stunningly beautiful, but they barely spoke English, which was great, because it allowed us to try out the Polish we thought we knew. Turns out we hadn’t really learned anything. We spent about ten minutes trying to point and figure out what is what was on the menu before finally settling on the few words we knew on the menu: barzcz, pierogi ruski, latke.

What we ended up with was the best meal I have ever eaten; probably not the healthiest, but the best. The barzcz was beet borscht that tasted like beets boiled in the nectar of the gods. The pierogi ruski were Russian style perogies, dumplings stuffed with cheese and potato served with a huge dollop of butter, not sour cream. The piece de resistance for me was the latke. From my childhood I knew Iatke as tasteless potato pancakes, what we were served at Babci Molina’s was like a Frankenstein version of poutine. Deep fried mashed potatoes topped with cheese curds and smothered in butter and brown gravy. My heart skips a beat thinking of it, and so should yours. I still dream of this dish when I’m eating plain old mash potatoes. No potato product has compared since this latke touched my lips.

Throughout the meal, our server would come and try to ask us how it was, if we wanted anything else, at least I think that’s what she was asking. At no point did she speak to us in English. She allowed us to stumble through with smiles and broken Polish.

It was great.

After this meal we were stuffed but so happy. Our server, who seemed to love our attempts at Polish, brought over a bottle, sat down and proceeded to pour three shots from a blank brown bottle without our asking for it. When we tried to ask what it was, she said: “Nazdrovie” and made the gesture to shoot back the shot with her. Not wanting to be shown up, we followed suit. This vodka (I don’t think they serve any other type of liquor) was the perfect way to finish the meal, turned out to be Miodula, a honey based

Although we couldn’t converse clearly, we shared some awkward laughs and a few more (WARNING: do not try to out drink a Pole) with our server before stumbling back to our hostel.

By the end of our visit of Krakow we visited Babci Molina’s four times in 6 days and had a few more shots with the same server. Her name was Anna; seems like every woman in Poland is named Anna.

Throughout our visit, we saw the sites, visited the land, met quite a bit of Poles and saw more beautiful women than ever. But as beautiful as the sites and women were in Poland, nothing beat the latkes and vodkas at Babci Molina’s. I can’t wait to go back.

have been obsessed with climbing Denali for several years now, and more so since 2005, when our first Yukon Girls On Top (YGOT) Denali attempt was less than successful.

Women in high altitude mountaineering are in the minority.

Packing your own weight or more in gear for three or four weeks, up a mountain in the snow and cold, and getting sick with altitude is

not everyone’s preferred vacation.

I don’t understand it myself; not a week has gone by over the past seven years that I have not thought about climbing Denali.

But while it has been at the front of my mind, it has not been at the front of my actions. Various events and circumstances have conspired to put the dream on pause.

Enter Tunde Fulop and her entourage of feminine adventurers.

Fulop is an amazing action figure of a woman. Obsessed with Climbing Denali... cont’d This was a practical move.

Though everyone in the group was strong and fit, and a few had altitude experience, the mountaineering experience amongst the group was below what we would need on Denali. We also wanted to see if we all got along.

Getting along will not be a problem. This past May, six YGOT

and one husband spent a week in the mountains at the Skagway Summit. I don’t think the three guides leading the trip have ever heard so much laughter and entertaining conversation from one group.

We spent a week winter camping in glorious weather. We learned how to set up tents in the

The “sharps garden” — all the crampons and snowshoes and trekking poles and axes live in one place. If a storm comes up they won’t get lost in the snow. snow and the wind, how to protect ourselves in the mountains by traveling on rope teams, how to self-arrest with ice axes and how to rescue someone who has fallen in a crevasse. We also tied knots, built snow anchors and traveled on snowshoes with crampons (spiky tread). And who knew…us women got to sit and visit with hot drinks while the guy guides did all the cooking!

The culmination of our week was a climb of Feather Peak and a 360-degree panorama of the most amazing views. Or maybe it was the night out in Skagway with our guides after we had snowshoed out, showered and gussied-up.

In either case we all finished the stellar week with raccoon tans on our faces from glacier sunglasses and reflecting rays.

Now there are six women (and one guy) obsessed with climbing Denali; we just have to pick a date.

Meet Howard Chymy Saxophonist has been playing in Whitehorse for 17 years

by Colin Alexander music has graced a huge variety of venues — everything from Burnt Toast Cafe and the Chocolate Claim, to Arts in the Park and The Old Fire Hall.

He has noticed the city changing and taking on a much faster pace over the 17 years that he’s been playing music downtown.

These days Howard is turning towards recording at home — a relaxed, studio-based approach with a story-telling aspect. I was

interested to hear that he avoided digital recording methods and instead gravitated to analog equipment. He’ll be compiling some of the recordings on the upcoming album At Home.

Now Howard is playing again, and with him comes the spring sunshine.

n any given day when the weather is warm and the sun is shining, you may hear the ambient strains of Howard Chymy’s saxophone drifting down Main Street in Whitehorse.

This year, the snow took a little longer to recede. It was a cool April, and when I listened for the sound of the sax, I didn’t hear it.

In the cold, dusty streets, I realized the absence and how much I missed his music.

I met Howard 10 years ago, not long after I moved to the territory, and got to know him through a series of conversations and portrait drawings that he agreed to sit for.

He always struck me as someone who made his own way in the Yukon, so when I bumped into him last week downtown, I invited him to sit down and talk about his early life and some of his musical influences.

One of his first influences was his grandfather-in-law, who could get an entire room full of people up on their feet dancing with only an accordion and his stomping foot.

Howard’s own musical education began as a young child with music lessons. His father allowed him to walk by himself, despite the long distance. He credits these lessons and the sense of in-

dependence the experience gave him with setting him in the right direction and beginning a long musical journey.

Listening to the music of such jazz greats as Charlie Parker and John Coltrane also provided inspiration.

Howard moved to Whitehorse in 1996 from Victoria, B.C. He came partly for a change of scene and to get into a new headspace — but also, like so many others, for romantic reasons. It wasn’t just a girl, he said, but the girl, who brought him here.

Through performing to support himself, he gradually became a fixture of the summer streets. His

Testing, Testing: One, Two, Three

Taking a look at how fertile your soil may be

I

’m a transplant. I recently moved to Dawson City from Whitehorse, and I recently moved to Whitehorse from my birthplace in Ontario.

In Ontario, I worked full-time as a gardener to the rich and famous for 12 years before hanging up my shovel and coming North.

In the Yukon, I have yet to keep a garden of my own, but I plan to sow some seeds this summer and learn about Northern gardening from the green thumbs around town.

My second week in Dawson coincided with International Composting Week, where I met Dawson City Community Garden coordinator and farmer, Katie English, who organized a number of events during the week to share the, ahem, richness of composting.

Fertile soil contains high levels of micronutrients, created by millions of microscopic critters living, reproducing and dying.

My herbalism teacher, Steven Martyn, puts this perspective on the matter: “Each handful of topsoil has over a trillion living beings in it — that’s more beings than all the humans on Earth.”

Decaying matter is good. And heat is required for adequate decay, but heat isn’t in abundance in the Yukon.

The Yukon Revegetation Manual published by Yukon College explains, “Yukon soils have formed under cold, semi-arid to moist sub-arctic climates on a range of geologic materials. While mineralogically diverse, most Yukon soils are shallow, have cold temperature profiles, exhibit weak to mild chemical weathering and contain very little organic material. Cold temperatures decrease the rate of chemical reactions and microbial metabolism within soils.” Translation: if you garden in the Yukon your soil may contain gold dust but it’s probably lacking in fertile organic matter.

To supplement the soil, you need to compost, as composting is the easiest and cheapest way to introduce organic, decaying matter into the soil. It’s also a beautiful way to reduce waste filling up the landfill.

Try this simple soil test that English taught us: Take a 1-quart jar and fill it halfway with a handful of the soil.

Fill the rest of the jar with water, leaving an about inch of space at

the top. Screw the lid on tight and shake the jar. Now let the jar sit undisturbed for 24 hours, no peeking. The settled layers you will see in the jar after 24 hours are, from bottom to top: sand, silt, clay, and water. The organic materials, containing the micronutrients you seek, float on top of the water.

To determine percentages, measure the whole height of the jar contents. Divide the whole jar measurement by 100. Hold onto that magic number. Measure each layer individually. Now, multiply the magic number by each of the layers. The answers are the percentages of sand, silt, clay and organic matter in the soil.

For example, if the measure of the whole jar equals 8 inches, the magic number would be 12.5 (100

Another helpful tip from English’s composting workshop: boost the nutrients in the soil by adding strong nettle, yarrow, and chamomile teas to your compost. These herbs will speed the decay of the materials you have thrown into the compost.

And by the way, if you drink a weaker version of the same tea yourself, you will clean and support your liver, help prevent seasonal allergies and have a good night’s sleep.

Your guide to finding a gift for the male in your life

You have a problem. Through no fault of your own you have acquired a “Guy.” This is to say a human male and not a “guy” in the old sense of the word (which, for those of you who don’t know, would be an effigy of noted explosives enthusiast Guy Fawkes).

Your Guy could be your lover, your friend, your brother or your dad. Some Guys are even girls (not in that way… well, sometimes in that way).

Occasionally you will need to buy your Guy a gift. Fear not, loyal reader, I have provided a list of things your Guy might like. These gifts start at $100 and end at free.

Some price levels even have two options, because each Guy is such a speshul wittle snowfwake.

Option One: Scotch A good bottle of scotch. For the Guy in your life whose budget means that the difference between the $15 bottle of ditchwater and the $20 bottle of Eau de Ditch requires serious fiscal calculation. Buy him one of these and he will temporarily love you — until the bottle is empty.

Option Two: NHL custom practice jersey Did your Guy eat his Leafs jersey after game seven in Boston? They’re dumb that way sometimes. The NHL online shop will sell you a customized practice jersey for only $89.99.

You could get a game-jersey, but they retail for $250 plus. Besides, with the practice jersey, your Guy can simulate the Leafs practising how to hold a 3-goal lead with ten minutes left in the third period.

$100: A nice bottle of scotch. He’ll love you ‘til the bottle’s done.

$50: Don’t feel bad about getting your Guy a gift card.

$ Option One: Two or three video games from the bargain bin

This one requires a little research, and some knowledge about your Guy. First, beware the Bargain Bin, for it is a harsh mistress — deep and full of crap. Second, know what games your Guy has played. So many titles come out each year that often Guys will not have had time to play all the good ones. Some games that will be in $15-$20 bin at the Wal-Mart or EB Games (personally vetted for quality) are Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Bioshock, Grand Theft Auto IV or Burnout: Paradise. When in doubt, look at old reviews online (ign.com is a good source) and in general, avoid anything based on a movie license.

Option Two: A Gift Card If your Guy complains that a gift card is too impersonal, he is defective and you should return him immediately. Most of the gifts on this list are about getting your Guy something he wouldn’t get for himself.

A gift card says, “I know you like things in the general category offered by this store. Here is free money.

Buy something nice.”

hisk(e)y is an acquired taste.

As a child I would sneak small sips out of my grandfather’s glass of Crown Royal when but it wasn’t until I moved to the Yukon and spent a long winter in Dawson City though that I came to appreciate what a fine drink it is.

Here’s an introduction to the diverse world of whisk(e)y, so you will know what to buy for yourself or, more importantly, your fatherin-law.

First things first: how do you spell it? With an ‘e’ or without depends on where it is made. Americans and the Irish spell it ‘whiskey’ while the rest of the world, including Canada, spell it ‘whisky.’

Types of Whisky There are three main types: bourbons, ryes, and malts.

Bourbons are your classic American whiskies and are made from at least 51 percent corn.

Commonly associated with Bourbon county, Kentucky, any American made whiskey meeting the required corn content and aged in new oak barrels can be labeled as ‘bourbon.’

Ryes are associated with Canadian whisky and must be made from at least 51 percent rye and aged for at least three years. The barrels can be either new oak or reused after containing other spirits.

Malt whiskies are made from malted barley and can be made anywhere in the world. Scotch is by far the most famous type of malt whisky.

When in Scotland never ask for a ‘scotch’, always ask for a ‘whisky’, which will always be a scotch unless you specify otherwise. To be labeled as scotch it must be distilled, matured and bottled in Scotland and aged for at least 3 years in oak barrels, usually ones that previously contained bourbon or sherry.

There are two main types of scotches, single malts and blends.

A Father’s Day Guide to Whisky

by Micah Quinn Single malts must be made from only one type of grain and all the whisky in the bottle must come from the same distillery.

If a bottle has an age statement (e.g. 12-year Macallan), then all whisky in the bottle must be at least that age. In the bottling process distilleries often combine whiskies from different barrels of different ages to get their product just right.

Although there are many high quality blended scotches, they are often considered inferior to single malts because their ingredients are not specified and can contain lower quality grain alcohols. With a few exceptions (Johnny Walker Blue Label), I tend to reserve blends for cocktails and mixed drinks.

Single Malt Scotch The most pretentious of all whisky drinkers are single malt enthusiasts.

There are four main types of single malts, each characterized by their region of origin: Speyside: These sweet, creamy

whiskies are often aged in sherry casks and exhibit and fruit, spice, and caramels flavours. They are quite popular with those new to scotch. Examples include Macallan and Aberlour.

Lowland: Light, smooth, and inoffensive, whiskies from southern Scotland may lack in complexity but they are easy drinking and enjoyable. Examples include Glenkinchie and Auchentoshan.

Islay: (Pronounced ‘EYE-luh’) Famously potent, these whiskies are known for their smoke, salt and peat — a result of malted barley dried over a peaty fire and left to age in the coastal air. Examples include Lagavulin and Laphroaig.

Highland: The most complex and varied region of scotch production, these whiskies capture the flavours of the other three.

Examples include Scapa, Clynelish and Highland Park.

Purchasing In the Yukon, expect to spend at least $70 on a decent bottle of scotch. Glenmorangie Original is very easy drinking and affordable. Macallan 12-year (sweet) and Lagavulin 16-year (smoky) are

both excellent high-end choices.

The Kensington Wine Market on Kensington road in Calgary or the BC Liquor Corporation headquarters at 41st and Cambie in Vancouver have great selections.

The Brown Jug ‘Warehouse Store’ in Anchorage is a whisky lover’s paradise.

ure, it’s a smart phone.

I don’t think the name is wrong, so much as how the name is understood. If you are smart, you can get this gadget to do a lot of really cool stuff. But until you’ve smartened up a little bit, it can be a real pain in the…

Let me give you an example.

My new Samsung Galaxy Rugby LTE will sync all of my contacts from both of my G-Mail accounts as well as Facebook, Twitter, and I’m sure anything else that collects phone numbers/email addresses/handles and images.

Great concept — everyone I might want to get in touch with all in one place. It’s when the concept meets reality that the smart exposes the stupid.

See, I’ve never been good at culling my contacts lists. G-mail auto-fills my address bar, so I don’t really care if it’s cluttered with addresses I don’t use. And I thought it was great to have Gmail auto-save everyone I had ever sent a message to, or replied to in my contacts list. More autofilled addresses!

Then I synced to my smart phone, and I had to scroll through 27 “info@” and 13 “unsubscribe@” contacts to find what I was looking for. I also had six different contacts for my wife and five different versions of Adam Gerle. That one sticks out because it is always

the top of the alphabetized list.

I had to get smart (see, the phone made me smarter) and clean up my cluttered contact list.

Then there is the Play Store for us Android users. There is not a solution to every problem in the store; there is a long list of solutions to every problem in the store. The challenge — and here you have to be smart again — is to do a bit of research to figure out which solution matches your problem.

Apple i-devices have a great music player, but the native Android player is not great — a problem in search of a solution.

I found an unbelievable number of music players for my phone.

I narrowed down the selection to seven or eight by reading reviews and then settled on one I liked that didn’t cost too much.

You have to be careful, it’s never free. If it seems free it’s going to have problems; you always get what you pay for. The one I’ve got works great, and the trial period still hasn’t expired, so I don’t even have to grumble about the cost (yet).

My favourite solution is how I solved the poor cell reception in our basement. Reception in the basement is important because that is where my office is. Not receiving calls while at my desk became a problem. I found a little

gadget on-line that connects to my cell phone through the BlueTooth, and will connect to my phone lines within the house. This means a call received on my cell, will ring through on the phone in my house.

Brilliant!

Except, I would not get my text messages, because my phone would be upstairs and I’d be downstairs.

Crap!

Enter MightyText. I loaded that up on my computer and my phone and now not I get all of my texts on my computer, and my desktop will tell me if my phone charge is getting low, and I can get those texts on my tablet as well.

Brilliant, again!

I’ve been smart enough to get this phone to do some cool things, even though I still can’t get the video working on my Skype account.

Next on the agenda?

If I’m really lucky I’ll talk Google into sending me a set of Google Glasses to review, but while I’m asking about that, I also want to see if they are looking for people to test a Google Ocular Implant.

I’m always losing my glasses; it would just be easier that way.

If the machines ever revolt against humans, Mark Beese is in trouble.

ne hundred engines slung between two hundred wheels.

That is what the Ride For Dad (RFD) will look like Saturday, June 8, when riders take to their bikes downtown. This is the fourth year for the prostate cancer fundraiser in Whitehorse.

“We had over 100 motorcycles last year,“ says Mike Thorpe, a director with RFD Yukon. “We have a 1,000 registered motorcycles in the Yukon, so we know the goal; we know where we want to get to.”

Prostate cancer doesn’t kill at the rates of higher-profile cancers. Typically slow-growing, the disease has a 96 percent survival rate. Incidence, however, is high.

One in seven Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

But embarrassment and resistance to seeking medical help means many men will not get checked until it’s too late.

“There isn’t a support mechanism in place for men’s health issues like there is for women’s health issues,” says Thorpe. “I’m not saying that ours is more important, but there’s not the same level of awareness. Guys are not as apt to raise the flag and say ‘I

have it, I’m fighting it.’”

Thorpe’s grandfather passed away in 1999 after a battle with prostate cancer, partly due to the ethos that demands men suffer in silence. But since Ride For Dad began in Whitehorse, he has seen more men willing to share their experience.

“For people to be able to say ‘I’m a prostate cancer survivor, or my uncle was, or my dad was,’ it gives people an opportunity to share their stories,” he says.

“We’ve got a couple people coming to this event that we’re going to recognize as survivors. We want them to see the people who are coming out to help fight a battle that they fought largely alone.”

As the event becomes a yearly fixture and not just a one-off, the challenges involved in organizing it have shifted for the RFD board.

With the basic infrastructure in place, they have focussed on making it fun, and creating incentives for riders and pledge-gatherers.

To that end they have signed a three-year agreement with Air North to provide round trip tickets to Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton or Kelowna.

“Last year the top earner was over $3,000 in pledges,” Thorpe

says. “If the average person pledged $30, that’s a 100 times that he’s got to go ask. That’s a lot of effort, and we want to recognize and reward that.”

Improving the Ride has also been about filling in the details as the events expands.

“For example, we just wanted to make sure last year that we had food available – and then we’re all there standing, eating the food going ‘Oh, there’s nowhere to sit down,’” Thorpe says. “So this year Bridges Café comes on board through Challenge, to take that aspect of it on and do a sit-down dinner. We’re trying to make it a fun event. We’re trying to make it so people want to come to it, so they put it on their calendar.

Motorcycles are a mechanism to build the awareness, to build that recognition of what we do.”

Ride For Dad will be held Saturday, June 8, with pre-registration on June 7 at Whitehorse Motors.

roll of aluminum foil can be a time and energy saver when cooking over an open fire – or even at home with the barbeque. The first step to minimizing problems is to buy wider and better quality foil.

Fresh fish, steaks or even a roast can easily be done in foil.

Lay the package right on the camp-fire coals.

Lemon slices, peppers and teriyaki are great on fish and there is a long rack of bottled sauces at the grocery store — use according to your personal taste.

Dinner can be served right out of the foil package, thus minimizing the clean-up efforts.

Please remember that the tinfoil does not burn when thrown back into the fire, so you should scrunch it up and take it with you for proper disposal.
