y friend Mike Bertrand was in town for the 21st Annual Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournament for Literacy on June 15.

Mike, son of Annette and legendary Yukon Mountie Chuck, grew up playing the links at the Mountain View Golf Course in Porter Creek, but when he left Whitehorse at 19-years-of-age he didn’t look back — not because he didn’t love the Yukon, but because doors opened in front of him rather than behind.

Now he lives in Los Angeles with his wife Mooney and daughter Kaylee, and he works as a golf pro for a club that has two Picassos in the lobby.

Mike used Whitehorse as a canon from which to launch himself into the world. I took a different tack.

I’ve lived in a half-dozen different cities since high school graduation, but Whitehorse is the only one that exerts a magnetic pull; my travels fan outward, but I inevitably return to this pivot point.

For a long time I wanted to be more like Mike — leaving town with eyes focused squarely on the far horizon. But unlike Mike, who has a talent for opening doors, I tend to paint myself into corners.

For example, the last time I moved home, in November 2008, I’d just been laid-off after a year at the bottom of the constructionworker totem pole in Edmonton.

No discernible career opportunities lay ahead of me.

Without the benefit of retrospect, it felt like when I returned to Whitehorse I was admitting to some sort of existential defeat.

I no longer feel defeated.

But as I went tramping through

The Yukon’s ethos of self-reliance, adventure and determination has allowed Mike Bertrand to excel in California. the streets of my hometown with Mike Bertrand, I was given a fresh perspective on my good fortune.

A bit of context: Mike and I were friends during high school but the year after graduation we became inseparable. We would invariably start our evenings with a pair of Tim Horton’s triple-triples (our taste in coffee has matured since those nascent days), and then we’d just fling ourselves into the night with a spirit that was equal parts adventure and optimism.

Some nights we would end up smoking cigars in a graveyard; other nights we would receive

percussion lessons from a Baha’i drummer in Rotary Park. But we were never bored.

So on the Sunday night after the golf tournament Mike got a “hall-pass” from Mooney and we hit the town to re-create our old magic.

We hopped from bar to bar and I caught him up on the locations and vocations of various people from his past.

A feeling of wistfulness came over him.

He spoke of the ways he’s tried to bring his Northern heritage to LA — camping with the family, for instance. He spoke of his love for Yukon’s endless summer evenings, and the pioneering thrill of being so close to the wild.

He, like I, was forged in this territory, and it’s Yukon’s ethos of self-reliance, adventure and determination that has allowed him to excel in California.

Unlike him, I need to have these lessons drilled into me on a more consistent basis.

Luckily I’ve selected the right pivot point.

Soooo Cute

There’s a fawn, a caribou calf, lynx kittens and lambs at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve

ome pretty cute babies have been born at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve this spring.

There are several sheep lambs, four lynx kittens, a mule deer fawn and a caribou calf.

And their cuteness is drawing people out to see them.

“Babies are the big hit,” says Marjorie Powers, a volunteer at the preserve. “They all go, ‘Ahhhh, look. Look at how cute they are.’ At least the women do, pulling their boyfriends along.”

However, the animals are behind a fence in huge enclosures – as close to their natural habitat as possible – across the 750-acre site; their coats enable them to blend in with their surroundings; and their moms are keeping them out of trouble. The secret seeing the babies is to employ patience, perseverance, good eyes, and some good luck.

That, and try to be there at treat time.

Powers says the animals know the daily schedule, and will draw near to the fence at treat-o-clock.

“Around mid-day most of the pastures will get treats of aspen branches or willow branches – and they like that,” Powers says. “So they know when the truck comes by for that and the animals will come pretty close to the fence to feast.”

There are five baby Dall’s Sheep at the preserve, and Powers says they’re often observable.

“You can usually see a lamb fairly easily — they’re either grazing with mom or napping or running,” Powers says. “To see all four of them running at once is adorable. It looks like a race.

“If you get close enough you can see them – you can either walk or take the bus tour.”

The bus tour leaves the main building every two hours with an interpreter on board.

The tour stops at each enclosure, so visitors get a chance to climb down and get close to the fence to watch the animals.

And there are many.

The preserve is home to Rocky Mountain elk, mountain goats, Alaska Yukon moose, muskoxen, wood bison, arctic foxes and more.

The facility takes in and rehabilitates sick, injured or orphaned animals and collaborates with veterinary schools and universities to conduct research. Over the past five years they have received 102 birds and mammals and have rehabilitated and released 88.

Powers, a veterinary student from Missouri, is part of a team of three volunteers who are hand-rearing a three-week old Dall’s Sheep and preparing her to join another flock. They began feeding the little lamb every hour when she was born on May 31.

Now they are on a schedule of every three hours – except 3 a.m.

“She started to not be hungry at 3 a.m., so we thought, ‘If you’re not going to eat, then

The herd that this lamb was born into has possibly been exposed to Johne’s disease in 2002, which fatally affects their digestive tract. So to be safe, the lamb was taken from that flock, kept indoors, and is carefully being introduced to the outdoors and a new flock. The goal is acceptance.

“When we introduce her to the adult flock we want her to be as wild as possible,” Powers says.

That means they don’t pet her, and they haven’t named her.

Which must be hard since she’s soooo cute.

Powers says she is almost ready to leave their nest and join the

new flock.

“Since we started to introduce her to the healthy flock, we’re taking her outside for more time and more often,” Powers says.

“Ideally, she’ll become comfortable with them, so the public will have more opportunities to see her.”

The Yukon Wildlife Preserve is located a half-hour north of downtown Whitehorse, at kilometre 8 along the Takhini Hot Springs Road.

Colour and Clay, Space and Story F rom strong swipes of colour to a fairy tale in clay, Arts Underground offered a lot to look at this June.

You only have until June 29 to see Shaping Space by Crag Lake artist Lawrie Crawford and Finding Balance by Tagish artist Sandra Grace Storey.

In Shaping Space Crawford fills the front room with abstract acrylic paintings. She applies the colour with scrapers, allowing accidental skitterings of other colours to peek though.

“Tartan Revisited” fills a three by six foot canvas with red. The red is applied with a flat scraping tool, mostly vertically and horizontally.

Irregularities in the scraper edge lets lines show through, creating the suggestion of tartan.

Yellow seems to peek provocatively through the red coating, wanting to come forward, while grey or greenish passages seem happier to recede, suggesting depth beneath the red surface.

This painting’s red expanse has a surprisingly restful effect, like Matisse’s “Red Studio,” which also uses gaps in the paint to suggest something behind the red surface.

Finding a story in the paint is

easier with a limited palette. “Dream Space” is mostly white, with circles of very thin paint shaped by rotating the scraper.

Their thinness suggests the dreams of the title — an embodiment of their fleeting nature, like soap bubbles.

S o m e paintings use a more varied palette.

“Soul of a Complex Person” allows turquoise, royal blue, chartreuse, red, black and white to stagger through the layer scrapings.

In Lawrie Crawford’s acrylic “Soul of a complex person,” turquoise, royal blue, chartreuse, red, black and white stagger through scraped layers. a short stroke of a wide scraper, suggest the possibility of a grid, a

striving to map out the mystery of the complex person in question.

In the Edge Gallery, the back room at Arts Underground, Storey tells us a three dimensional fairy tale called Finding Balance.

Storey tints her clay sculptures with oxides and mason stains.

These treatments settle into surfaces and allow the clay to come through. The oxides and stains emphasize surface textures, which Storey often prints with spruce boughs and other plant forms she finds during walks.

The show begins with “First Mother’s Offering.” A seated figure offers two closed bundles, suggesting choices. In the next two pieces, the bundles unwrap, revealing Raven and Rabbit, the story’s two protagonists.

Rabbit and Raven act as a kind of yin and yang. Rabbit is a shy maker and Raven a flyer, thief, and giver of unreliable rides.

Although this is a show of sculpture, only three of the pieces are in the round. The rest are installed on the wall —their textured slab constructions twisting in three dimensions. Sometimes they form a shelf for a figure to sit upon or a window for a figure to peek through.

In “Dialogue” Rabbit and Raven hang with their eyes closed, their foreheads separated by an inch.

The space between them becomes charged with a tender presence.

Many of these sculptures are already sold, so this exhibition offers the only chance to see the whole story with all the works together. They will fly and hop off to their purchasers at the end of the month.

So fly, hop, walk or wiggle to Arts Underground in Whitehorse before June 29 to see Finding Balance by Sandra Grace Storey and Shaping Space by Lawrie Crawford. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

eens are not known for their love of history, but at least one Yukon museum is trying to change that.

The MacBride Museum of Yukon History may have a traditional log-cabin exterior, but there are exciting new developments inside — many of them popular with youth.

“Teenagers have a lot of different choices on how to spend their time,” says Keith Halliday, MacBride Museum chair, and father of four. “It can be an uphill battle for museums.”

The MacBride, however, has been engaging young people by offering a wide variety of exhibits, special events, and programs beyond the usual school visits.

Recently, the museum created a crowd-pleasing exhibit on the history of softball in the Yukon; worked with Norway to put on an exhibit on famed Arctic explorer Roald Amundsen; and hosted an event called History meets Mystery with visiting authors Vicki Delany and Barbara Fradkin.

“Our Hockey Day in Canada program last year was really

popular,” Halliday says. “The museum put on a retrospective of hockey in Whitehorse going back to the early 1900s, and we had some really neat photos. And to this day, no one has ever beat One-Eyed Frank McGee’s eight goals in eight minutes.”

The museum’s Yukon Books series connects younger teens with the territory’s history. Halliday wrote the series of four-book for youth eight to 14 year olds, but the stories — which explore the Klondike Gold Rush among other eras — have much broader appeal.

“They’re historical adventure novels, with fictional characters and a little extra spice from the tales I heard around the woodstove growing up,” he says. “I hear that parents and teachers enjoy them as much as the kids.”

In May, the MacBride launched the Interpretour tablet, created

by Yukon-based Mid-Arctic Technologies. Visitors carry around hand-held devices and scan a small tag as they look at exhibits.

This allows them to access addi-

tional information, images, audio and video.

“It lets us tell Yukon stories in a new way and enriches the exhibit,” says Halliday. “People – especially young people who are used to tablets – find it a fun and easy way to get more details. At the launch I could see them smiling and looking around at everything as they used it.”

And parents from around the world can bring get their kids engaged with Yukon history using the tablets – they function in 48 languages.

Beyond the four walls of the museum, summer visitors can pan for real Klondike gold and hear the truth behind the legendary Sam McGee. The museum will also provide guided tours on the S.S. Klondike.

immy Johnny was born in a tent at his father’s woodcamp, four miles downriver from Mayo.

Until age six, his life was spent close to his parents, his uncles and aunts, and his grandparents. From them he gained knowledge about traditional ways of living. He helped with hunting and fishing in the summer and fall, and trapping in the winter — using two teams of dogs to traverse the trap-lines.

Then Johnny was sent to a residential school, where he and the other children were forbidden to speak Northern Tutchone. One day he was caught cooking a rabbit he had snared over an open fire; he was punished with a month-long indoor confinement.

Many of his early milestones occurred during the times he spent at home with his family. When he was nine years old his father guided him on a hunt for his first moose. A couple of years later he was skilled enough to hunt alone and he remembers his family’s pride when he came home to tell them that he had been successful — at the age of 11 he was already providing food for his family and neighbours.

When he was 13, Johnny was hired as a wrangler with the outfitter Louis Brown.

For three years, he had one of the hardest jobs in the outfitting business. The wrangler is responsible for the care of the horses, including rounding up the horses in the early morning, loading and unloading their packs, setting up camps and taking them down.

In 1958, at 16 years of age, Johnny first saw the country that

The headwaters of the Bonnet-Plume, the Snake, and the Stewart Rivers of the Peel River Watershed had for centuries been important as hunting grounds, and Johnny felt a deep connection to the beauty and space of the area.

He began a career as a hunting guide that would continue until 2010. Over those 52 years, Johnny worked for several different outfitters in the area, and developed a thorough knowledge of the terrain that made him one of the most well respected guides in the territory.

His fascination with wildlife led to a life-long interest in photography.

Whenever possible he carries a camera to capture both still photos and film footage. In 2011, he created a short film called Back Country Pictures, which appeared in the Dawson City International Film Festival in 2012.

Now Johnny is interested in educating and speaking out about the protection of his beloved Peel Watershed.

“Especially the water, I want to see it protected,” he says. “If it wasn’t for the water, we wouldn’t be here talking to each other.”

A Klondike Korner with Dan Davidson

The Klondike Echoes Down through the Literary Years T

he Klondike has been the inspiration for a great deal of fiction since the Gold Rush, beginning with Jack London, who came with the Stampeders and left with a mother-lode of inspiration that would make him the wealthiest name-brand author of his generation.

A decade later, the same inspiration seized a quasi-hobo and reluctant bank clerk, making him one of the best selling writers of rhymes in the 20th Century.

Robert Service was well aware of the disdain in which he was held by the literary poets of the world, and so generally didn’t bother to claim kinship with them. He was to them as Robert Bateman is to the fine art establishment.

In 1998 Canadian novelist Robert Kroetsch, who spent some time in the North, celebrated the Gold

Rush Centennial by publishing The Man From the Creeks, a fictional retelling of the “true story” behind one of Service’s most famous poems, “The Shooting of Dan McGrew.”

It’s a delightful novel, told from the viewpoint of a naive teenager who doesn’t quite understand what is going on.

Sticking with the Gold Rush period, let me recommend the Klondike Mystery series by Vicki Delany. Her heroine, Fiona MacGillivary, is co-owner of the Savoy Saloon and Dance at the height of the action.

Gold Digger, Gold Fever and Gold Mountain are the first three books, and they chronicle a summer of murder, theft and kidnapping, more major crimes than actually happened in Dawson during the boom years of 1898-1902.

They have a good sense of the setting and are good light reading.

Talking at the Woodpile is a collection of loosely connected stories set in Dawson and Rock Creek,

by Yukon author David Thompson.

They are by turns amusing and nostalgic, depicting a place that isn’t really the Klondike, but feels like it could have been.

Thompson recently followed this book with a novel called Haines Junction in which Joshua Shackelton roams all over the Pacific coast before settling in the titular location. He eventually ends up in Dawson and Rock Creek, married to a member of the Halloo family, who had been at the core of Thompson’s first book.

Klondike references even influence science fiction. Robert J. Sawyer’s most recent novel is a

Sawyer, who was writer-in-residence at Berton House during the summer of 2007, was inspired to create his Martian boomtown after reading about the Gold Rush and deciding to apply for the residency.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

USA Hops to the Lead

H

umulus Lupulus = Hops.

They aren’t involved in the fermentation of beer.

They aren’t even a major component. You might have 6 kg of malt in a homebrew batch but only 30 g hops. They don’t get roasted. And they occur in virtually every commercial beer.

Hops are preservatives, they have sedative properties and give bitterness and certain flavour characteristics to beer — even Budweiser.

Many substances have been used to flavour beer — bog myrtle, spruce tips, rosemary, etc. Several hundreds of years ago, brewers used a mix of herbs called gruit.

Gruit consisted of such botanicals as yarrow, mugwort and heather to flavour and preserve the beer. It probably also hid the offflavours resulting from medieval brewing practices.

Gradually hops became the

dominant herb in beer.

The writing of Pliny the Elder in the first century A.D. contains one of the first known references to hops. Russian River Brewing makes a mean imperial IPA in his honour; a just memorial for a man who succumbed to the noxious gases of Mount Vesuvius while attempting a rescue mission.

By the eighth century A.D. hop vines were being cultivated in Europe. Europeans ensured that hops were spread throughout the globe, bringing them to North America in the mid-1600s.

The number one hop producing country (also the number two beer-drinking country per capita) is Germany. United States is second and China is third.

Europe used to look down its nose at the fledgling United States on the hop front. The U.S. brewing tradition developed its own peculiarities. Their original hops were

stronger, with a coarse flavour and aroma. But now the Yakima Valley of Washington and the Willamette Valley of Oregon are important hop-growing regions of the world.

A classic American-style beer is the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The flavour and aroma is from a U.S.-bred hop called Cascade — a staple in many American microbreweries.

Cascade hops are citrusy (think grapefruit) and piney. The release of Cascade hops in the 1970s proved that Americans could cultivate decent varieties of hops and create new beer styles for a growing population of beer aficionados.

The American homebrewing revolution in the 1970s pushed beer into a new frontier. The revolution included the corruption of traditional English styles and the heavy-handed use of Americanbred hops.

The in-your-face, resiny hop bombs known as American IPAs take a while to get used to, but they are a happy sign of a nation blowing in the face of tradition — the sort of behaviour we expect from the United States.

In the beer world it’s a good thing.

Festivities will end at 6 p.m. in order, Grossinger says, to allow people time to get to other celebrations they may be having.

Ultimately, he feels that this is an event that will allow people to have a great time while reminding each other of the connection they share in being Canadian.

“This is why we have Canada Day – this is why we have to show that we are true patriots – and there’s only one anthem, regardless of what language a person sings it in. Still the meaning is the same.”

ed Grossinger figures Canada Day is one of the most meaningful events for a community to share together.

He has been organizing Canada Day in Whitehorse for some 15 years and along with entertainment producer Lauren Tuck, and the rest of the Canada Day committee, he aims to create a celebration that encompasses Canadians of all stripes.

“First of all we present it bilingually, in French and English,” Grossinger says. “Then we have a number of musicians that are French, English, First Nations, Filipino – there’s quite a mix. The entire program is based on showing that we are Canadians of various backgrounds. This is for all Canadians. This is why I figure this is one of the most important celebrations there is.”

Canada Day in Whitehorse will offer a mix of the outdoors, art, food and drink all taking place at Shipyards Park on July 1. The event is free to attend, but you are on the hook for any foodstuffs or libations.

Opening ceremonies will be at noon, following a parade to Shipyards Park at 11 a.m. Wall-towall musical entertainment takes

place from noon to 6 p.m. This is in addition to a beach (well, grass) volleyball tournament, a rubber duck race, firefighting demonstrations, and a food court. In short, a lot of events for a wide variety of interests.

And Grossinger has noticed that Whitehorse residents enthusiastically connect with the community through an abundance of sports and arts activities.

“I never saw a town with so much going on,” says Grossinger. “It’s probably because of the type of people that we have. Most people here enjoy the outdoors, and at the same time we enjoy the arts as well. Almost everyone is involved in something. And you don’t see that in big cities, you don’t see that at all. You don’t see that anywhere else.”

Grossinger, a Montreal native, fell in love with the place while serving with the Canadian Military here in the early ‘80s. After 30 years’ service he retired in Whitehorse.

With a rich Quebec accent and easy laugh, Grossinger’s manner belies the organizational task in front of him.

“It’s not easy at all,” Grossinger says. “We’re lucky that we have a

tremendous amount of volunteers from the Legion. Our main thing is to find enough money to make it happen, and with them we don’t

have to pay for parade directors, security, that sort of thing.”

Skateboard competition on July 1 gives skaters a chance to shine

A

aron Frotten started skateboarding when he was four years old. But the bornand-raised Yukoner couldn’t practice at the skate park back then; it didn’t exist.

“Skateboarding gave me a sense of freedom, a sense of exploration,” he says. “It was about trying to find that cool spot to skate.”

Frotten — who works at Sandor’s Clothing Ltd. and leads the store’s skate team — has now been skating for 27 years.

First he cruised around town and then learned tricks in the park when it was built in the early 1990s. He loved the fact that skating wasn’t totally socially acceptable; he liked being that social outcast.

Look at him now and you’ll see his elbows are scraped. He says it hurts like hell when he falls, but he can’t see giving the sport up — ever.

He’s been helping out with Canada Day Skate Comp, hosted

by Bringing Youth Towards Equality (BYTE) and the Boys and Girls Club, for the past several years.

The competition takes place every July 1.

This year the event will feature two competitions: best run and best trick. This year’s Battle of the Bands winners, Vision Quest, have confirmed they will perform at the event, along with four local DJs: MC Turmoil, Abstract Ori-

ginal, DJ MK Ultra and Kill the DJ. Gen Beaudin, the manager at BoardStiff, thinks the comp is a great opportunity for skaters to showcase their skills.

“This is the only event just for the skaters,” she says. “They make so much effort to be great at the sport, and it’s their time to shine.”

BoardStiff and Sandor’s, along with Triple J’s, are the major sponsors for the event. They’re giving away whole skateboards, decks, wheels, clothing, accessories, and more.

20-year-old Eric Johnson, 17year old Noah Hutchison and 20year old Cameron Sass have all competed in the skateboarding competition before, and are excited to do so again.

Johnson says that when he competed a few years ago, he was really nervous. This year he just wants to entertain.

“I want to inspire the younger kids, and show my friends and family what I’ve been doing all summer – that I’m not just wasting my time,” he says.

The three are even hosting a demo and workshop for younger skaters.

Beaudin has been skating for the past few years. She says it’s one of the hardest sports she’s ever done.

“It’s not like skiing or boarding, there’s nothing attached to your feet,” she says. “You can be

a good mountain biker after just one season. But a lot of people give up skating. After years and years, you can still be not good at it.”

She thinks Whitehorse has the perfect conditions for skaters to improve their skills quickly.

In the summer it’s light almost all the time, and the skate park is far enough away from houses that noise complaints aren’t a problem. In the early months of the summer, skaters can practice almost 24 hours a day. Because it’s flat, less people are getting hurt and the police seem to be pretty relaxed, she explains.

Frotten has watched the skate culture change in the past 27 years, but for him skating in the Yukon is simple.

“It’s always been about passion,” he says. “I had goals. I was going to practice something, finesse it, and perfect it. Without skating, I have no idea where I’d be. In jail, probably.”

The three competitors think along the same vein. Hutchison plans to skate his whole life while Johnson is going to be on his board “until his knees give out.”

“You don’t think about anything when you’re doing it,” says Johnson. “You’re in your own world.”

“It’s an art. It’s passion,” explains Hutchison. “It’s my whole life. If I didn’t skate, I wouldn’t be who I am.”

Two most common causes of Yukon bird deaths are cats and collisions

This rare western tanager visits Whitehorse and gazes at its reflection in the window. Hanging a feeder close to windows is a technique that may help birds from flying right into them and dying.

R

ecent reports indicate that populations of northern boreal forest birds are doing better here than in other parts of Canada. Local biologist Katie Aitken says it’s mainly due to Yukon’s relatively pristine natural environment.

“While research has been limited, there are indications Yukon birds are somewhat protected from the declines underway in other parts of North America,” Aitken says.

However, several species of birds are listed as threatened.

They include bank and barn swallows, a pretty bird called the Canada warbler, the common nighthawk and olive-sided flycatcher.

Some shorebirds are also in decline.

Why? Climate change is having a big impact on habitat and food selection. Permafrost is melting, and wetlands are changing. Protecting wetlands — especially spring staging areas — can help. Swan Haven, for example, provides a vital resting place for birds on their long migrations.

Aitken says disturbing habitat through roads and destruction of forests can also cause bird numbers to drop.

The latest Environment Canada conservation strategy for Bird Conservation in Region 4, which covers most of the Yukon, states that more research into conservation planning is needed to reduce

the impacts of such habitat disruption.

Sometimes it’s just adapting existing practices.

Highways and Public Works set up guidelines a few years ago to postpone road brushing later in the year, if needed, to protect nesting birds.

However, the two most common causes of Yukon bird deaths are cats and collisions with windows. There are things Yukoners can do to minimize such deaths.

For collisions, examine your windows from a bird’s eye view.

If a bird sees reflections of trees or light from a window on the opposite wall — a window tunnel — it may fly into the glass. If you have windows at the front and back of a room, it may appear to a bird that they could flight right through the room and out the other window.

Put bird feeders either immediately next to windows or well away from them. Hanging some plastic or a few flashy CDs from fishing line on the outside of the window will detract birds from flying into the windows. Cover the other window inside the house so the bird doesn’t think it’s an exit.

The goal is to break up the external reflection.

You can also order decals (Window Alert) that reflect UV light that birds can see.

Those black cut-outs of hawks don’t work.

If a bird does crash and seems stunned, you might revive it by

placing it in a covered container, like a shoebox with some air holes, keeping it safe in the dark, quiet place until it revives, and then letting it go. Don’t offer food and water.

Do you have a cat? They are serial killers in the bird world.

Keep your cat inside or take it for a walk on a leash. Aitken points out many birds nest on the ground, and also that even wellfed domestic cats will try to kill birds.

“Cats are predators and they will lay in wait and kill by instinct,” she says, adding that bells are no help in preventing the carnage. “Robins in shrubs get hammered by cats.”

If you want to create a welcome place for birds at your home, clean bird feeders and birdbaths with fresh water will attract them. And if you’ve got dead trees in your yard with holes, consider leaving them up as long as possible – they provide valuable homes for many birds (including some ducks) that nest in tree cavities.

If nothing else, taking time to reflect on how many mosquitoes birds kill may encourage you to find more ways to enjoy, and protect, Yukon’s birds this summer.

ow do you go to the bathroom in a canoe with eight other people in it, without stopping the boat? And I am not talking number one here.

It is a question that must be contemplated by every paddler in the Yukon River Quest enroute from Whitehorse to Dawson.

The answer?

It Depends.

“We used to have that option, but last year we started not having that option,” Noreen Schaefer of Team Women Having Outrageous Adventures (WHOA) says. “Now, you [poop] where you sit.”

This involves shouting “paddles up” to tell one or two people behind you to lift their paddles out of the water. Then you perch your behind over the side of the gunnel and go.

This technique is only an option on the large Voyageur canoes where the boat doesn’t even notice the weight of one person hanging off the side.

In kayaks and canoe doubles, a bedpan or a bailing bucket is used. I am told that the little oval pitchers used for holding the bags of milk are perfect.

Paddlers Abreast team member Claire Demarais says her team is more flexible.

“We sometimes go to shore,” she says.

“It depends on the people in the boat. It depends if you are shy or not.”

They’ve also got it timed. It’s 10 hours to the end of Lake Laberge and then another 12-14 to Carmacks.

“We stop at the end of Laberge to change clothes and have a thermos of soup,” Demarais says. “It’s nice to be walking after 10-12 hours in a boat.” And going on solid ground.

Other nutrients needed for a happy, healthy garden include calcium, boron, sulphur and magnesium.

Another consideration is the amount of sand to clay in your soil. Root crops need room to spread out so sandier soil is beneficial to them. Plants that need lots of water do better in claybased soils.

If you take some wet soil and squeeze it in your hand you can determine if the soil is clay-based (the ball of soil sticks together) or sandy (the ball crumbles).

When added to soil, compost will aid drainage when the soil is too wet and help hold moisture in sandy soils. It is often fairly pHbalanced, but the nutrients it contains depends on what materials

There are pH testers in most stores that sell gardening supplies. Or you can mix a bit of the soil with vinegar; if it fizzes it is acidic. Soil mixed with baking soda and water will fizz if it’s alkaline.

t is a good idea to find out a bit about your garden before planting anything in it. What will grow in a plot of soil depends on what is in it, how compact the soil particles are and the pH level of the soil.

The required nutrients are reliant on what is to be grown. Most fertilizers include on their packaging what’s called an NPK ratio.

There’s a Bear in my Yard!

How to keep your yard from smelling interesting to a bear

W

hether your yard is a camp-site, the area around your cabin or your fenced residential property, it is still disconcerting and sometimes frightening to have a bear that close to you. It’s more common than we realize because a bear may check out your space and finding nothing to attract and hold it there, and quietly move on in its constant search for something to eat.

Bears have super-keen olfactory senses, so they are chiefly attracted by smell. It doesn’t have to smell good to humans, it only has to have an odour to get the bear’s attention.

In the non-food category, the odours from chest waders, gas cans, inflatable boats and leaking propane are among the smells that attract bears. Food smells give them the reward of a meal or at least a taste. These include compost, garbage, pet food, barbecue or campfire grills, food scraps and improperly disposed dishwater, which always contains bits of food.

Last summer in Whitehorse, 17 black bears and two grizzly bears were killed because they were into garbage etc. around residential areas. Situations such as those are emergencies and must be dealt with quickly in order to keep the public safe. Many other bears were scared away through various methods and some were trapped and relocated.

Trapping sounds like a win-win situation, but it is time consum-

ing, expensive in person hours and often ineffective because the bear goes back to the area where it was originally trapped.

These situations are often described as “bear problems,” when in fact they are more people problems. The bears are following their instincts, which include eating from the time they emerge from the den in spring until they return to a den in autumn. They have a natural curiousity, which, coupled with their appetite, gets them into all kinds unpleasant circumstances (for humans).

These situations end up poorly, often fatally, for the bear.

The most obvious changes in behaviour need to come from humans. Unfortunately, too many residents think it can’t happen to them or they simply don’t care.

But if you do care, here are some suggestions: *Keep the compost and garbage cans in the garage if available. If no garage, keep the cans out of the sun where the contents are heated and give off strong odours. *Put the garbage/compost out only on the morning of the pickup. *Keep the grill clean on your BBQ or campfire grate. *Don’t put pet food outside, or bring the dish in after feeding. *When camping, burn all food scraps, burn and take home all tin cans and bury your dishwater some distance from camp. Absolutely no food inside tents — this includes children’s snacks.

We are living and playing in the bear’s country. We are the visitors, and we need to show respect.

A Spring Hike I have been on several day hikes this spring, and spring was very marginal this year. Winter just didn’t want to let go.

On the day of my last hike there were flurries and cool temperatures forecast everywhere in the territory. We aimed to climb Stony Creek, but as the Johnsons, a gold mining family from Dawson City, and I met at the bottom of the trail it looked like we were about to hike right into the clouds.

We decided to drive towards some blue sky to our southwest.

We could always hike the Kusawa ridge again, and look for sheep and pink spring flowers, but I had already been up twice this year. It is also fun to go across the lake and ascend the terraces. The very steep climb up Coudert is another amazing experience.

We find the sun just past the Takhini River Campground. We parked there and found the trail easily. (On our return, someone had put up a private property sign. Next time I will try to find another parking spot.)

Once we were on the trail the sun stayed with us all day.

Climbing higher we saw clouds all around, some dark and ominous and several streaking down as

We followed the path up the sandy banks. Over the years it has become an ATV trail. As soon as the trail became wet, due to a little creek in between a hill and the mountain, we went bushwhacking up and to the south, veering away from the trading trail towards the clear flank of the main creek.

Ah, the mountain!

There were lots of pink primrose on the southeast mountain slopes above 3,000 feet — a harbinger of spring.

Compared to the Kusawa ridge, the primrose here are smaller and more fragile, but abundant and pink as ever.

We had lunch in the sun. We found a nice spot behind a rock shelter – it’s a spot that the wild sheep like, judging by the abundance of sheep droppings. They know the best spots on a mountain to lay down.

Jeremy spotted an animal on a distant snow patch, it looked like a beaver to me, but we concluded it must be a marmot. We climbed to it’s home — a burrow in the snow — and the prints and burrow looked suspiciously small. At home afterwards, looking at photos, I concluded it was probably an Arctic ground squirrel.

And what happens when you hike with gold miners? We had the great fortune of seeing Golden Plovers.
