tephanie Hammond won’t be dancing on the truck leading the annual Pride parade in downtown Whitehorse this weekend, as she has in previous years.

Instead, she quips, she’ll be busy co-ordinating “dozens and dozens of floats” that are expected to take part in the third annual version of Yukon’s colourful celebration of diversity.

“We have a wide definition of ‘float’, and we’re really looking forward to seeing what people create,” she says.

“It could be a truck, it could be a little trailer, it could be something you pull behind a bicycle.”

As one of the founding organizers of 24+ Hours of Gaylight, Hammond says she’s impressed with the number of people in the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community and allies who have participated, or cheered along the parade route.

“I’m always reminded every year that there are people who don’t feel supported, who don’t feel accepted, or who are looking for that,” she says.

“An event like this is really important in terms of people who maybe feel marginalized, having that confident message of support and acceptance shown to the community.”

This year’s parade comes on June 27, exactly one day before the 45th anniversary of the first Gay Pride march, which took place in New York City on June 28, 1970.

That 51-block trek to Central Park from Christopher Street in Greenwich Village marked the first anniversary of spontaneous protests that broke out when police raided a gay tavern called the Stonewall Inn. The Stonewall riots are considered a watershed moment in the gay liberation movement and the fight for LGBT rights in the United States and elsewhere.

A new addition this year will be a Queer Celebrity Lookalike contest during the Pride dance at Antoinette’s restaurant on Saturday night. The idea grew out of a “really successful” drag costume competition during the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous in 2014.

“We were really impressed with the costumes we saw at that, so we wanted to encourage people and give them the opportunity to dress up for the dance,” Hammond says.

“I anticipate we’ll get a handful of Ellen Degenereses, maybe some Neil Patrick Harrises.”

Given recent media headlines, there may even be a Caitlyn Jenner or two.

Festivities will wrap up Sunday with a noncompetitive Pride Paddle from downtown Whitehorse to the Takhini River Bridge.

Faro Calling

What’s Inside

T

he Town of Faro fascinates me because I’ve never been there, but I’ve heard stories.

That is was a mining boomtown starting in 1969, and now it’s a bit of a bust town.

That it’s very well groomed — in my head (and in writing, now) I call it the Pleasantville of the Yukon. It’s got unusual thermals, the cranes that migrate through the area swirl miles above the town for a few weeks each year.

It’s got rock formations that make geologists drool.

Patti Balsillie (more about her soon) calls it a potential Disneyland for geology nerds.

I’ve heard that Faro is built in levels, on a hill. I’ve heard that the town and a golf course are one-in-the-same.

I’ve heard about the music festivals that used to take place there, and the empty houses.

Empty houses make me think of ghosts, and that’s an association that I made up in my head, but it’s because of all the stories swirling around in there.

I’ve heard the community is incredibly generous, and welcomes visitors with barbeques and historical talks.

The Town of Faro wants people aside from me to be fascinated.

They want Yukoners to go to Faro for the weekend, to bring friends and family there for visits when they’re showing off their homeland, be it adopted or not.

That’s the impetus behind a tourism event happening in the town this weekend, June 27 and 28. It’s called Great for Faro,

Finally, there is the idea to promote the agricultural and art potential of Faro. There are lots of artists in Faro, but no one knows, according to Balsillie.

Why not make it an art and craft and food haven?

June Hampton says she got involved with this project because, “nobody else was.”

She’s retired, and wants to mentor someone to take this on.

Balsillie says Faro needs stewardship and leadership if it’s going to develop a tourism industry. She says it needs a Kim Winnicky, referring to the woman who made the Atlin Arts and Music Festival a go-to summer event for Yukoners — putting “Atlin” on the lips and in the hearts of locals.

Balsillie says one or two topics should be focused on; the weekend is when residents will be invited to come out and brainstorm.

How do they want to attract visitors?

Balsillie says if Faro doesn’t develop a local industry, it will “struggle to not disappear in the wind in 20 years.”

Hampton doesn’t think it will disappear. She says it will be business as usual, but “usual” is a population of around 400 living amidst infrastructure meant for 2000.

Balsillie and Hampton both say Faro has stories, but no one to tell them to. They want to change that.

Good for Tourism.

The town hired Patti Balsillie, a tourism consultant, to figure out how to draw the potential out of Faro.

Faroite June Hampton, who’s in a group that’s advising Balsillie, says it’s important that community members are involved with developing tourism, and that they’re developing things for themselves which may be good for tourism, too.

Otherwise, Hampton says, local resentment may grow if there are things for tourists but not for locals.

Balsillie says there are five areas of development that experts are going to talk about. And they are things that are already going on in Faro. It’s just that no one knows about them.

The first is storytelling. She’s bringing in an expert storyteller to show that the art form could enhance Faro and attract visitors.

Balsillie says she wants gas station and restaurant owners along

the highway to tell travelers, “You have to go to Faro for the day.

There is storytelling everyday at three o’clock.”

Then there is the geology (remember, Disneyland for geologists). The town could develop interpretative tours built around the unusual rock formations found in the area.

The third area is trails and environmental interpretation, apart from rocks. Balsillie says there are extensive trail systems that the locals love, but it took her a day of searching before she found any information about them online.

Balsillie thinks it would be cool if Faro were known for its trails, and developed a mountain biking system for the summer and a cross-country skiing network for the winter.

Then there is an idea to make Faro part of a motor-biking adventure route. Ross River and Carmacks would have to be involved, and the Robert Campbell Highway loop would be touted to visitors.

n ambitious pan-Northern ensemble of seasoned musicians from all three territories will make its debut in Whitehorse next week as one of the performance highlights of the fifth annual Adäka Cultural Festival.

The New North Collective will bring together the songwriting and performing talents of four Yukoners, two residents of the Northwest Territories, and a throat singer from Nunavut.

In the words of Yellowknife bassist and spoken word artist Pat Braden, it is essentially a showcase of Northern talent that could eventually morph into a “fluid, evolving kind of show” that would incorporate different artists from time to time.

The other NWT performer is award-winning singer-songwriter Digawolf, originally from the small Tlicho community of Behchoko (Rae-Edzo), but now living in Yellowknife.

In 2005, he was named best male artist of the year at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards.

Yukon vocalist Diyet, from Burwash Landing, is credited with providing the musical vision for the project. Classically trained in opera, she is best known as an alternative folk artist and prolific songwriter. Her husband, Robert Van Lieshout, is the ensemble’s percussionist.

The other two Yukoners are versatile pianist-songwriter Graeme Peters, a founding member of Whitehorse rock group Speed Control, and multi-instrumentalist Bob Hamilton. A longtime music producer, Hamilton recently opened a guitar-repair shop in Whitehorse with his son.

The collective’s seventh member is throat singer Sylvia Clouthier, who lives in Iqaluit. Although she won’t be in Whitehorse for the Adäka appearance, her music will be featured on some of the songs.

“I wanted to be able to play sort of a background textural chord progression, or kind of sound, and keep that going musically, without looping, without electronics, but just be able to have the music flexible enough that the story could continue,” he says.

Nowadays, Braden is known as much for his stories about life in the North and the characters he has encountered over the years as he is for his music.

That storytelling side of things — and the distinctive instrument he uses with it — will also be on display at Adäka, at a presentation of storytelling “in the round” at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.

Called “Stories from the Kitchen Table”, the event will also feature Yukon storytellers Sharon Shorty, Mida Donnessey, Selena Pye, and Daniel Tlen, as well as Clarissa Rizal, from Alaska. Admission is by donation.

The New North Collective’s world debut will be on the same stage on Tuesday, June 30, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $20, or $10 for elders and youth.

Rather than performing pieces written by individual members, the group writes its musical fare collectively, based on ideas brought forward by different artists.

This involves “getting together and writing and building the show right from the ground up,” Braden explains.

“It’s going to be really exciting to have our first gig [at Adäka].”

Braden himself is no stranger to the Yukon, having performed here several times before.

A Saskatchewan native whose family moved to the NWT when he was a child in the early 1960s, Braden started his musical career as a bassist playing as many as six gigs a week in Yellowknife clubs and bars while he was still in high school.

“Living in a small town, you get away with a lot of stuff,” he laughs.

After studying music for three years at what was then Grant MacEwan Community College in Edmonton, he spent some time in Vancouver before returning to Yellowknife in the mid 1980s.

In the late 1990s, those sixnighters started to dry up and Braden considered giving up playing bass altogether.

By then, however, he had stumbled across an article in Guitar Player magazine about a new instrument called the Chapman Stick.

“As timing would have it, my firstborn came along when we were down in Arizona, and I just took a quick trip into Los Angeles and went to the guy’s house that makes them and picked one up,” he says.

As he began to master the instrument — which resembles a much longer, wider guitar fretboard and has as many as 12 individually tuned strings — he realized its potential for accompany-

DCVFD has also been on site when events have occurred at the problem-plagued wastewater treatment plant on Fifth Avenue.

In addition, it organized the provision of carbon monoxide alarms for all residents in the Klondike, and one of these has already been responsible for saving a family in West Dawson.

The fire department also performs and assists in rescue services, and was recently a key participant in the rescue of some stranded canoeists who were trapped on islands near Rock Creek when their craft was overturned by sweepers and high water.

Through Regimbal, who is the president of the Association of Yukon Fire Chiefs, the department has been instrumental in pushing for a more organized system of civic numbering within the town boundaries, a spin-off from its efforts to get 911 emergency tele-

The department consists of Regimbal, as the full time fire chief, and 25 to 26 volunteers, including one deputy chief, one senior captain, and five additional captains.

While the volunteers do get call-out and training pay, none of them take that money home.

Presently it is used to fund the department’s museum and pay for the summer manager.

n any Wednesday evening, at any time during the year, most residents in the core historic zone of Dawson City can hear the sound of a siren cutting the silence. If it’s about 7:30 p.m., people will know that there’s nothing to be concerned about. It’s the practice meeting of the Dawson City Volunteer Fire Department (DCVFD) being called to order.

The fire department, which has been under the supervision of fire chief Jim Regimbal for the last decade, is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If that siren goes off at any other time, it means the men and women who volunteer are on the move to an emergency.

The department’s services extend beyond Dawson’s municipal boundaries thanks to mutual aid agreements with the Klondike Valley Fire Department in Rock Creek, the Yukon government (YG), and areas across the Yukon River that are outside the town’s boundaries. There is a similar agreement with the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in government.

With the assistance of YG, the department recently acquired a special truck so it can access fires where the larger vehicles can’t go.

While the department responds to fires, such as the recent house fire in the Dome subdivision, it also assists in dealing with motor vehicle incidents.

The fire chief of DCVFD is the coordinator for the Territorial Emergency Measures Organization in the event of a disaster, as defined in the Civil Emergency Measures Act, for the City of Dawson.

Last fall it had to coordinate a hazardous materials incident, when a liquefied natural gas tanker truck overturned near the Ogilvie Bridge.

Be careful when gifting property (including cash and securities) to a spouse or minor child, as income attribution rules may apply, causing income earned on the gifted property to be taxed in your hands.

• If you donate securities with a capital gain to a registered Canadian charity then there is no tax payable on the capital gain, and you get full credit for the donation, up to the standard charitable deduction limit.

• Will — A will is simply a plan for distributing your assets to family members and other beneficiaries. If you were to die intestate (without a will), provincial laws would determine how your assets should be distributed — and there’s no guarantee that the end result would be what you would have chosen.

• Beneficiary designations — Many of your financial assets — including life insurance policies, RRSPs and TFSAs — allow you to name a beneficiary. Upon your death, your beneficiary will automatically receive these assets, avoiding the sometimes time-consuming, expensive (and public) process of probate. It is essential that you periodically review these designations to make sure they reflect your current wishes and that they do not conflict with the terms of your will.

• Trusts — Different trusts can help you accomplish a variety of wealth transfer and estate planning goals. For example, an inter vivos trust can help you leave assets to your heirs without going through probate.

You can also structure the trust to stagger payments over a number of years, rather than all at once, or include other restrictions or incentives. A testamentary trust, created in your will, can allow your heirs to effectively income split with the trust, potentially decreasing overall taxation.

As you can see, trusts are versatile instruments — but they are also complex. Consequently, you’ll need to consult with your tax and legal advisors regarding your particular situation.

• Permanent Life Insurance — When building an estate for your heirs, you have typically considered both registered and unregistered investment accounts as your principal sources of accumulating wealth.

Permanent life insurance can be used to effectively accumulate wealth and pass it along to children or grandchildren, typically in a very taxefficient manner.

All the wealth transfer techniques we’ve looked at will require some careful thought and preparation on your part — so don’t wait too long before getting started. Time has a way of sneaking up on all of us — but it’s especially sneaky when we’re unprepared.

few years ago the Yukon Film Society (YFS) unsuccessfully bid on a lease for the Hatch House in Shipyards Park, in hopes of hosting an artist residency. Although that didn’t work out, it planted a seed that has borne fruit this summer.

Throughout the spring, summer, and fall YFS will support an artist residency program in the Jenni House Studio at Shipyards.

“It was really time for an artist residency program in Whitehorse,” says the executive director Andrew Connors.

“Studio space in town is expensive and we wanted to create a space where we could support both local artists, and artists from Outside, to create more work.”

ell I hope that sundrenched stretch wasn’t summer. It was glorious, hot, and beautiful — what a tease.

I’m sitting inside with the rain lashing the windows under our first precipitation since Environment Canada’s icons changed from snowflakes to water-drops; I actually lit a fire today to ward off the chill and damp.

Nothing outside is tarped — I grew complacent by our complete lack of rain, and so construction projects are drenched, cushions are sopping on their benches, and a blender sits idle on a stump near an extension cord.

I watch from the window,

stunned to inaction.

On coastal visits I remember that it’s easy to go out and do whatever one wants to in the rain — you just get wet. But after such a long dry spell, I have forgotten that here, so I hunker down inside. Of course, it’s never just the rain; it’s the wind as well. But still, Vancouver Islanders would laugh at me.

Don’t get me wrong, I know the rain is great for the gardens, for the forest fires (or lack thereof), and for the forests themselves.

While I chomp-at-the-bit for the projects that I’m not continuing outside there are more than enough inside activities to catch

up on, those that have taken a backseat to gardening and building. Good heavens, I could read, or write, or play music — if only I could stop lamenting my confinement.

Putting the kettle on is always a good start, and after coming in from animal-related chores feeling damp and cool, I decided I needed a hot lunch — a first since the greenhouse started producing greens.

No smoothie and salad today.

Luckily, I just thawed a bag of green-curry-paste cubes that were cont’d on page 17...

Soup Season? ... cont’d hidden away in the bottom of the freezer. I retrieved them with a guilty compulsion to be rid of the evidence that I hadn’t finished last year’s supply before the fresh cilantro became ready again.

I decided to be liberal with it and tossed two whole cubes — quite a punch of flavour — into a saucepan with a little oil. I fried them for a minute or two before adding hot water, miso, and rice noodles. I topped the whole

thing off with a massive handful of chopped fresh cilantro and chives, and voilà: almost-instant Thai noodle soup. It’s almost as good as those Thai kitchen packets, and fills a bigger bowl.

The nice thing about a soup like this is that it combines the fresh taste of spring greens — especially for those of who love cilantro — with a bit of heat from the chilies, and of course the physical warmth of the broth. It warms and com-

forts without feeling heavy. I am in no mood for hearty root vegetable soups or stews this time of year.

And now the rain has ceased and the sun is considering coming out. Time to get back outside.

Agnes’s Thai Green Curry Paste This is the answer my friend Agnes gave when I wondered aloud what to do with all my cilantro.

Play with the herb ratios depending on what you have available and according to your taste. Freeze the paste in ice cubes for easy access later on.

Ingredients • 1 stalk lemongrass, minced or 3 Tbsp. prepared frozen or bottled lemongrass • 1-3 green chilies, sliced (Thai green chilies or jalapeno) • 1 shallot, sliced, or 4 Tbsp. minced purple onion • 4-5 cloves garlic • 1 thumb-size piece of galangal or ginger, thinly sliced • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves & stems • 1/2 cup fresh basil • 1/2 tsp. ground cumin • 1/2 tsp. ground white pepper • 1/2 tsp. ground coriander • 3 Tbsp. fish sauce (Vegetarians: substitute 1 Tbsp. soy sauce) • 1 tsp. shrimp paste (Vegetarians: substitute 1/2 tsp. salt) • 2 Tbsp. lime juice • 1 tsp. brown sugar • 3-4 Tbsp. coconut milk (enough to blend ingredients together) Method • Place all ingredients in a food processor, chopper, or blender. Process well. Taste-test it for salt and spice. If too salty, add a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon juice. Add more chili for heat. Your curry paste is now ready to be used.

• You can bottle up any leftovers and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

• No electricity? Use a mortar and pestle. Pound all dry herbs and spices together to form a paste, then gradually add the wet ingredients, stirring until smooth. Alternatively chop and smear with a sharp knife.

Cooking Tips • Heat a wok or large frying pan or pot over medium-high heat. Add 2-3 Tbsp. oil and swirl around, then add the green curry paste. Stir-fry until fragrant (1 minute), and then add 1-cup stock plus your curry ingredients (meat, seafood, or tofu/wheat gluten, plus vegetables). Simmer until ingredients are cooked, gradually adding 1/2 to 1 can coconut milk until you’re happy with the taste/thickness/amount of sauce.

• As you’re cooking, you can also add 2-3 kaffir lime leaves (left whole) as well as any leftover lemongrass stalk pieces for even more flavor.

• Add more fish or soy sauce if not salty enough, or some fresh-cut Thai red chilies if not spicy enough (or dried crushed chili). If too spicy, add more coconut milk. If too salty or sweet, add a squeeze of lime juice. If too sour, add a touch more sugar. Finish your curry by sprinkling over generous amounts of fresh basil or cilantro.

n der schoenen blauen Donau” (The Blue Danube) is a waltz composed by Johan Strauss in 1866.

Well, back then, the river may have been blue but today it looks greenish.

The river’s source is located in the Black Forest in Donaueschingen, a small town 130 km from Stuttgart. There, the river looks like a creek. The water slowly streams.

But it will change along the way to the Black See. The river flows through 10 European countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine.

A lot to travelers come to Germany to undertake a bicycle trip along the “schoenen blauen Donau” — from Germany to Austria, Hungary, or even all the way to the Black Sea. If you are planning to cycle along the edge of the 2860 km river I recommend exploring the area before you start.

Visit Donaueschingen and the Danube Spring. It is worth a day trip to see the castle of Fürstenberg and the old yellow Church.

By driving 30 km away, you will find a different world, especially at night in the small town of Moehringen, another idyllic site along the Danube.

Two months ago, a Yukon-friend told me about her trip to Germany and a Night Watchmen Tour she took a few years ago. I was amazed when I found out that the tour was only 20 kilometers from the town where I grew up. I realized how

little I knew about the history of my home and native land.

Two months later I am standing in front of the old City Hall in Moehringen, waiting for the tour to begin. Instead of a ticket, we get a little Schnapps-glass on a string to hang around our necks.

For later, they tell us.

Night is falling as three watchmen in blue costumes blow horns and sing a song. They tell us about their history. Being such a person in the Middle Ages meant preventing people from dying in fires, stopping thieves, and keeping an eye on the town wall. At night nobody could come in from the outside or go out from the inside.

They take us to an old building that used to be the bathhouse, where people could wash themselves. Nobody owned a bathroom.

The next station is an old brick stone cellar; it’s cold. This was once used to store ice cubes and beer. People in old time costumes offer us sausage, bread, and of course, beer.

After the break the tour continues to the church, where “gesinde” (homeless people, witches, and unfaithful women) did their shenanigans and business. There is a fire going and it makes me feel like I am back in time.

A night watchman needed to stay warm in the winter, so he kept a bottle of Schnapps in a wooden box. Now, we get to use the Schnapps-glass around our neck — for a drink, to warm up.

If you cannot get enough of the Middle Ages and knights, visit the castle in Sigmaringen, 40 km from Moehringen.

The castle dates back to 1077.

Here you can find one of the biggest weapon collections in Europe.

From the castle you will also have a stunning view of the Danube River, before you bicycle along its banks.

“It’s not like weeks on a canoe trip down the Yukon River, but a taste,” he adds, searching for examples.

“Maybe an afternoon of paddling, or an afternoon of hiking — the other part of the taste is the culinary taste.”

Recently, a pair of women from Asia came and spent some time with Walcher. They laughed as they spent time with the fire department, and were enthralled with the campfire.

Walcher says he learns as much about guests’ culture as they do ours.

“It’s not a one-way thing, where you just show the Yukon,” he says. “They tell you about their country and how they live, you know, so it’s a really interesting two-way conversation.”

When he started, Walcher didn’t realize there are a lot of people interested in special weddings. So, he has since teamed up with Sheila Dodd, a Yukon marriage commissioner, to provide custom and beautifully personalized weddings along with honeymoons and Valentine’s getaways.

Walcher prides himself on offering personal service and, in most cases, is still in contact with his clients abroad.

After all, his slogan is, “Come as a stranger, leave as a friend”.

he rustic cabin on the far end of Annie Lake Road greeted the honeymooners with flowers and wine.

Then, too, there were framed photos from their wedding.

And dinner was prepared over a barbecue by Red Seal Chef Pat McKenna.

And a picnic lunch, for the next day on the shore of nearby Wheaton River, included strawberries and chocolate.

“They were pretty surprised,” says Werner Walcher with a satisfied smile.

It is all part of the VIP treatment offered up by Taste of Yukon Adventures.

When Walcher realized he could share his favourite parts of the Yukon, he decided to create the tourism company.

“I also work with Outside companies that are filming in the Yukon,” he says.

“They hire me as location manager, or second camera, whatever they need.

A

t the far end of the Rotary Peace Park parking lot sits an innocuous metallic trailer. The inside is clean, well organized, and perhaps a bit cramped. To the left, there are two small fridges and a sink; to the right, there are cooking facilities.

It’s a humble operation, which is why the decidedly big flavours produced within such small confines are so refreshing.

It’s the Silver Bindi.

Named after the forehead adornment common to South Asia, the Silver Bindi is a food truck dishing out the exotic tastes of India from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every weekday.

The eatery is a labour of love for co-owners Kyle Marchuk and Vanessa Younker, who are excited to take their place in Whitehorse’s burgeoning food truck explosion.

For Marchuk, it’s the culmination of a dream he’s had for a few years.

“It started back in 2012,” he explains. “I was in India with my wife and step-daughter and I fell in love with the food and the people.”

The twists and turns of life forced Marchuk to put his idea on the backburner, but when he struck up a relationship with Vikram Vij of the famed Vij’s Restaurant in Vancouver, the wheels began turning in earnest.

Marchuk called down to the restaurant and eventually spoke to Vij for an hour. Having Vij as an ally didn’t hurt, but as Younker points out, there was another important element in the decision to open up shop.

“There’s always a need for more options, and there was a void in Whitehorse,” she says.

So, in Lethbridge, Alberta, they found a suitable pod from which to run their business, drove it North, and presto — the Silver Bindi was born.

While Younker admits it’s small, she doesn’t feel oppressed by the 6’ by 8’ dimensions of the trailer.

“It’s quite efficient, as long as everyone puts everything back in the right spot,” she says.

And for Younker — who is a Red Seal Chef and has previous experience working in an Indian restaurant — co-owning a food truck is a perfect opportunity.

“[I like] owning my own business without the full commitment of a restaurant,” she says.

And she particularly thrives of the collaborative aspect of the enterprise.

“I find the business partnership and the exchange of ideas rewarding,” says Younker.

According to Marchuk, the public response has been equally rewarding.

“It’s been fantastic as far as I know,” he says. “People are excited.”

In hopes of building a roster of repeat customers, the Silver Bindi changes its menu daily. On this day it is curried chicken and chickpeas. Another day it might be caramelized onion and ginger lamb curry. They also offer a vegetarian option.

In the future, they hope to extend their hours, but for now they specialize in filling the lunchtime chasm.

The Silver Bindi is open from Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

acing the Yukon River Quest can be a daunting undertaking, or a search to find the fast current while having a lot of laughs.

This year’s entrants include serious, highly competitive teams as well as individuals looking for sheer adventure, ticking it off their life wish list.

The Yukon River Quest is the longest canoe and kayak race in the world. It happens to be in our backyard. The 2015 starting roster consists of 58 teams from 12 countries in various classes: solo canoe, solo kayak, tandem canoe, tandem kayak, and the ever-increasing Voyageur class (at least six in a boat). All need to navigate 715 km to Dawson City, and arrive in less than 55 hours to be in the money.

The fastest Yukon team wins beer. This year, the fastest women will be treated to a team dinner at Klondike Rib and Salmon.

Seasoned Yukon racers will tell you that it all starts when the ice break-ups in springtime. Hauling a boat over snow and paddling back and forth on either side of what little water is open in April is both beautiful and repetitious. Serious teams aim to log 60 to 70 hours before race day.

Swans and eagles, beavers and muskrats keep paddlers company while fighting headwinds and practicing the never-ending switches or “huts”.

The race starts with a “Le Mans start”, where competitors run to their boats at noon on Wednesday, June 24 in front of cheering

crowds. Heading down river to Policeman’s Point and yelling their team number at the first checkpoint, teams are just warming up.

Then onto Lake Laberge, which can be a real slog. Big winds and rollers coming from all directions challenge even the most experienced paddlers. Strong and steady, along the east side of the lake, paddlers must keep within 200 metres of shore and within yelling distance from the next checkpoint at Cather’s Place.

Safety boats will run the gamut checking for anyone in trouble.

Reaching Thirty Mile at the end of Lake Laberge is a welcome relief because the speed of the river dramatically ramps up.

Through the first long night, into the rhythm, feeling the ebb and flow of the water and the ups and downs of one’s own energy, it is critical to hydrate, eat, and stay warm and positive. The current carries ever onward and northward as racers see Hootalinqua at midnight, Big Salmon in the dusk, and then pass 4th of July Bend and the gold dredge at Henderson’s Slough — harkening back to the Klondikers of 1898.

Racers often see the faces of those old codgers in the mist when the hallucinations start kicking in.

After resting and re-fueling on food and lots of coffee in Carmacks, they get back into the boat and are off into the teeming Five Finger Rapids, then they navigate the maze of the Minto Islands, coming alongside historic Fort Selkirk in the now alpenglow light.

Paddle in, paddle out — past Isaac Creek, Britannia Creek, Bellarat Creek, Coffee Creek, and then they pull into Kirkman Creek for a mandatory three-hour rest.

The last 100-kilometer stretch to Dawson is often the hardest.

Battling overwhelming fatigue, cramped and stiff from being in the same position for so long, needing to stay alert to navigate alongside the White River, the Stewart, Sixty Mile, and Ancient Voices, the racer’s predominant thought is “how much further?”

A GPS is a great morale builder because it can help racers monitor the distance to the next check point as well as indicate speed of travel. SPOT devices are mandatory gear and those at home can follow with live feed on-line at yukonriverquest.com.

Volunteers are the strength and support of this race. They are the vigilant eyes in the safety boats, keeping campfires burning at the night checkpoints, cleaning out messy boats in Carmacks, and sending in data to the communication techies who keep the leader board up-to-date.

This year’s race will see some serious competition in the men’s C-2 class with Jeff Brainard and Gaeten Plourde joining forces after their previous solo races.

Pauline Frost-Hanberg and Derek Crook will have young bucks Alex Jessup and Rob Spinks on their tail — or maybe vice versa. Team Ts’alvit, in the mixed Voyageur class will try to better their record from last year. The Tough Birches are aiming to get a team dinner at Klondike Rib and Salmon.

Shelly Gellatly’s Team, WHOA, always has a lot of laughs and are in search of more.

Everyone wants the beer.

All racers will be challenged by both the length of this race and the ever-changing weather and water conditions.

Come out and cheer the racers on from June 24 to 28.

Pat McKenna is a Yukon River Quest paddler who will race with Team Ts’lavit this year.

eople are built pretty much from the same plans, but there are enough height, weight, and shape differences that any-old-pack won’t work nearly as well as the right pack.

Often the right pack is expensive, but it’s common these days for the extra money to pay for a label rather than quality.

Full size packs come in two basic styles: internal and external frames. External frame models are slightly heavier, because of the metal framework.

These packs are better allround for a person who hunts and has to pack meat, because the meat or quarters with bones can be tied to the frame to minimize movement from side to side.

These packs often have a flipdown shelf near the bottom rear to sit the load on top of.

Internal frame packs are better all-round for straight hiking and camping where most of the loads are made up of a number

Internal frame packs are the best bet for hiking and camping of bits and pieces, most of which are more stuff-able than a load of meat.

The ads and catalogues often make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, but a little research, including conversations with pack owners, can help you make a good decision.

Since people come in differ-

ent lengths, so do packs. Most quality packs have frame adjustments to lengthen and shorten the unit. Some have no adjustments, but that’s fine if it fits you at the length it is. Don’t buy it simply because the price is right.

Studies have shown that by performing a regular rotation every 8 - 10,000kms the life of your tires is significantly increased, in most cases by up to 25%. Other factors such as driving style, application and tire pressure will also affect tread life. Failure to regularly perform rotations has proven to cause several different abnormal wear patterns such as diagonal, accelerated and uneven wear. The common rule for rotations is to move the drive axle tires straight forward or back depending on the vehicle and the free rolling axle should be crossed.

This will cause the waist-belt to ride below the hips, forcing the shoulders to carry the whole load.

All packs have adjustable shoulder straps, but these straps should also adjust to varying heights at the top, not just the bottom.

Adjustable straps should also run from the top of the frame to the top of the shoulder straps to allow you to pull forward the top of the pack. An adjustable chest strap, which connects the two shoulder straps at about breast level, is very important. The waist strap (large wide belt) should be attached to the bottom end of the frame by adjustable fastening points to allow the lower end of the pack to be brought-closer-to or moved-away-from the lower back. All these fastening points should be equipped with quickrelease clips, not with buckles.

Many packs come with a slipover rain cover often with one side blazing orange to make the pack highly visible. The exterior of the pack should have straps attached for sleeping pads, tentpoles, tri-pods etc., and a number of large zipper pockets of various lengths.

The sidepieces of the frame should extend a number of inches above the top of the pack, or, even better, form a “U” to which bedrolls can be tied.

If the pack is not waterproof use a plastic garbage bag inside to keep the rain out.

A civilian defence helmet from World War II Remember when we went there, Teresa?”

Grandpa and I attempt to remember what year we went.

“Oh, it was 2001,” Sid reminds me.

I asked him why a Korean pilot’s helmet would be in Hawaii; if anything I would’ve expected Pearl Harbour artefacts.

“The pilot probably lived there at one point. He probably died and his family took his stuff to the second hand store to sell.”

Holding it up, Sid points out parts of the helmet that are undamaged. “It’s still got the microphone on it and everything. It belonged to a Major Phillips.”

Next we venture out to the museum and find a green US police helmet.

“That one is a helmet from the Second World War. It belonged to the military police from the Second World War. I’ve had that one for years. Got it here in Canada at a flea market in Alberta, probably Calgary.”

Sid shows me how to put it on.

The helmet can be seen in his profile picture in the upper left hand corner of this article.

Looking around the museum we spot yet another helmet. This one is white with no logos, words, or symbols.

“I’ve got four or five civilian defence helmets from the Second World War in 1942. I found the box of them in an old barn. The year 1942 was marked on the side of the box. They’re definitely Canadian.

“I’ve got the civilian defence in the museum, in the old army and Alaska Highway room, same location as the police helmet.”

his year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the German occupation of the Netherlands.

Sid van der Meer remembers it well.

He scurries around his home and finds photos of the liberation.

Handing two photos to me he says, “This is from April 16th, 1945 in our hometown Witmarsum, Friesland. I was just seven or eight years old when the end of the occupation happened. I remember it well.”

Witmarsum is located in the northern territory of the Netherlands.

The two photos include numerous Canadian troops alongside Dutch citizens, including young children, sitting on tanks.

“Everyone got all excited when the Germans surrendered. The Canadians did that, not the Americans.”

Sid recalls the parades and celebrations after the German occupation was finished and Canadian ally troops entered.

“Everybody had a big parade, a victory parade. The children made costumes from old parachutes and tarps.”

Eventually, Sid’s family immigrated to Canada.

“I was fifteen when I left Holland. My family moved to Magrath, Alberta, and we worked on a farm. In April 1961, I came up to the Yukon.”

And here we sit in Sid’s home in Beaver Creek.

During this visit Sid digs out his old war helmets. Near his front entrance sits a white helmet with blue and red patterning.

“It’s a Korean pilot helmet from the Korean War. I bought it at an antique store in Hawaii.
