Plunging the Depths of Despair E

very Friday at 10 a.m.

I meet with What’s Up Yukon’s editor Tamara Neely at her home in Riverdale. We sit in her dining room and review our previous week’s work and plan for the week ahead. It’s generally a lighthearted affair that includes a bit of sustenance.

She makes toast.

Because these meetings take place in her house, they occupy the grey area between the domestic and the professional. On the one hand we need to get business straightened out — we need to make sure we have a publication-worthy paper in the works. On the other hand, even the most heated editorial debate can be interrupted by a phone call from mom.

It was under these ambiguous conditions I decided to use her bathroom one Friday morning. I say “ambiguous” because I maintain a code of conduct with regards to the use of toilets. Under my personal protocol, peeing is acceptable in every available commode, but delivering a payload is another matter altogether.

In short, I try to never drop a deuce in someone else’s home.

Sometimes the idiosyncrasies of human biology conspire against me and I am forced to do so, but it is always a last resort.

By contrast, donating a stool sample in a public restroom or in the restroom of an office building has never been a problem for me.

So what’s the difference? Why does house-pooping cause me such consternation while publicand-office-pooping causes me no anxiety whatsoever?

The obvious answer is that it is never good form to foul the air in a buddy’s abode. This is certainly a contributing factor to my protocol, but the girth of the issue lies in a deeper, darker, more psychologically wrought domain.

toilet. This same phobia does not exist for public and corporate toilets because if I plug a public toilet I can always pull up my pants, scamper out of the stall and exit the bathroom with an expression of angelic innocence plastered upon my recently-relieved face.

Don’t judge me. We’ve all done it.

House-pooping offers no such easy escape. If you plug up a private toilet you have to prattle around in a panic, looking for a plunger that may-or-may-not be in an intuitively reasonable location. Sometimes a given bathroom won’t even have a plunger.

I wasn’t thinking straight that Friday morning at Tamara Neely’s place. I was too engrossed in the professional aspect of putting a publication together that I forgot I was actually in a private resi-

dence — and by extension, a private bathroom. So when I plugged her toilet and was forced to admit doing so, it soiled the meeting’s congenial atmosphere and reinforced my deep-seated phobia on the subject.

But not being one to shy away from self-improvement, I am determined to conquer my fear. The first step is to ensure every house I frequent has a plunger readily available for my use, should I need it.

With that in mind, when my roommate Chris Madden announced he bought his first house I knew what I would be getting him for a housewarming gift.

It’s not the most thoughtful or heartwarming present, but when I’m visiting his new home it will sure take a big load off my mind.

Making New Tracks

B.C. artists mix traditional songs into current music scene

I

n the past 10 years more and more First Nation dance groups have been popping up. People have decided it’s pretty cool to learn their traditional drumming, singing and dancing.

Bracken Hanuse Corlett calls it de-colonization.

Hanuse Corlett is an audio-visual artist with the group Skookum Sound System, which uses current technology and traditional sounds and images to create a dance party.

Skookum Sound System are performing at the Adäka Cultural Festival on June 27, and they will be teaching free workshops in four communities across the Yukon, teaching youth how to do what they do: DJing, electronic beatmaking, singing and making multilayered videos.

While their beats pulse through the body, the raw vocals and stream-of-consciousness video projections take the mind on a

trip. A trip with a message.

“For us the message is very important,” Hanuse Corlett says.

Hanuse Corlett and fellow Skookum Sound System artists Csetkwe Fortier, his wife; Dean Hunt, his cousin; and Darwin Frost, his longtime collaborator, are all into reconnecting with their different indigenous roots. They are also environmental activists.

“De-colonization is basically the re-emergence of our culture and our practices,” says Hanuse Corlett, who is Wuikinuxv and Klahoose from the Coast Salish Territory. “I’ve been meeting people with a Celtic background and they’re looking more into their roots, too.”

De-colonization opens up the possibility of seeing life from a different perspective – the kind of perspective our ancestors might have had. Of what’s important in life, like the impact of pipelines.

a pipeline being built from Alberta to the west coast of British Columbia.

To him, the idea of shipping oil from the coast means an oil spill in the Pacific Ocean.

“Poisoning your water seems so backwards to me,” he says.

Hanuse Corlett says their music is a way to spread their side of the pipeline debate. And they do it by making an audience-pleasing soundscape.

“We call it medicine candy,” Hanuse Corlett says. “We present a pleasing visual environment and sounds – you either nod your head or shake your booty to it. You can still dance to it, even though we’re talking about pipelines.”

They also want to show the new generation that art can be used to create change in the world.

“For the youth coming to the workshops, they’ll be able to access some new tools – audio-visual tools,” Hanuse Corlett says. “One of the lines we use is ‘We are the technology.’ Meaning all of these tools are an extension of your own expression.”

The free workshops take place in Haines Junction, Whitehorse, Dawson City and Old Crow, thanks to the Adäka Cultural Festival, Northern Cultural Expression Society, Bringing Youth Towards Equality (BYTE) and the Yukon Film Society.

Stephanie Chevalier, executive director with the film society, is excited that Skookum Sound System will be teaching youth about the possibilities of using traditional art in new ways.

“The new, indigenous media

art scene is something that made me think, ‘Wow, that exists?’” she says. “It was a great discovery for me and I’m excited to share it with Yukoners.”

The workshops are inclusive – non-First Nation youth are welcome.

“I see this as a potential for development of critical thinking for youth,” Chevalier says. “It’s about sending the message to youth that they can contribute to social change through art, and not necessarily through getting into politics.”

Skookum Sound System will be at the Adäka Cultural Festival on Thursday, June 27. They will do an artist talk at 1 p.m. and perform at 6 p.m. in the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre. Tickets are $5 for two people.

The free workshops are for youth 12 to 18 years old. They take place on June 24 in Haines Junction at St. Elias School; on June 25 and 26 in Whitehorse at the Yukon College; on June 29 in Dawson City in the KIAC Ballroom; and on June 30 in Old Crow at the Youth Centre.

A Never Ending Quest

I

n the winter of 2010 I began my studies with the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition out of Ontario. I was compelled to begin learning about healing there, and I was excited.

The courses began by focusing on foods and how they affect the body. I learned how to balance bodily systems by reviewing a person’s nutritional habits and physical symptoms of concern. I was able to figure things out with confidence. For example, I could determine whether a person’s skin conditions were caused by digestive difficulties and toxic overload, or hormonal imbalances. I could

Anger, for example, can be stored in the liver and we typically hold fear in our kidneys. Our bodies tell us when there’s an emotional issue we should deal with — we just need to learn to listen.

Morse of the North

First Nation poet featured at Poetry Festival

“F

ool that I was, for many years, I tried to reject any notion of an artistic life,” says poet Garry Thomas Morse. “For me, a poet is not just someone who pens pretty lines or teaches theory or hangs out with poets. You can blame my Native background for my shamanistic viewpoint [but] for me, it is a lonely business, this return from the realm of one’s private vision and the consequent struggle to give it form.”

Morse will bring his shamanistic approach to the Old Fire Hall, reading new work at the Whitehorse Poetry Festival, June 20 to 23.

Morse also plans on relocating to Whitehorse for a time after the festival ends.

“Since around 2000, everything’s been a blur with upkeep for my software business for 10 years, studying at [Simon Fraser University], doing a variety of other technical jobs for corporations, followed by three years at Talonbooks serving as online pro-

moter and editor,” he explains. “I may take a bit of a breather, and then turn over a fresh page. Swimming, snowshoeing and caribou stew are high on the list. Morse of the North begins.”

Despite the poetry festival’s status as a fixture in Whitehorse since 2007, this is the first time a First Nations poet has read at the festival. Morse’s collection, Discovery Passages, is the first work to feature stories of the Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) First Nations – who were early trading partners of the Tlingit First Nations of B.C. and Yukon.

Morse will be visiting Teslin to give a reading on June 20, in association with the festival.

Morse’s poem “Wak’es” deals with the cultural theft of family heirlooms, something that was common in areas where First Nations had contact with early settling communities. Theft could happen, for example, through the governing legal system.

so that they would offer up their masks and regalia as bail,” Morse says.

Often these objects would find their way into museums, locked away from the rightful owners, but Morse’s approach is to temper this injustice with humour.

“One can whine about it online or one can get mad or one can take refuge in laughter and I would venture that the third option is the least harmful to oneself,” he says.

Morse hesitates to don the title of role model but accepts that he can help provide another vision of the future for those living in remote areas.

“My visits to smaller communities, including First Nations communities, has represented something positive, if only in showing alternatives to what can be an insular way of life for young people, and some of the common problems that implies,” he says.

“That’s really part of a more universal principle, that poetry and literature can be exciting and that however hard, one can actually try and make a brilliant life out of it.”

Eva Holland, the poetry festival’s communications co-coordinator, is pleased Gary Thomas Morse is presenting his work this year, which is the fourth annual event.

The poetry festival will showcase the work of 10 guests who have made a life out of poetry.

This year guest poets include Jo Shapcott, from the United Kingdom, and Jamella Hagen, a Whitehorse-based poet.

In addition to readings, the festival this year will also include practical information sessions offered by the guest speakers on such topics as tax tips and advice

for getting published.

Old Films Provide New Attractions in Dawson B ack when Dawson City was at the end of the road, some of the consumer goods that arrived here stayed here because it wasn’t worth anyone’s time and money to haul them away.

Such was the case with a treasure trove of 500 nitrate-based reels of silent movies, newsreels, shorts and primitive cartoons that were shown in town between 1903 and 1929.

The films had been cached in the Carnegie Library (now the Masonic Lodge), which had been abandoned due to fire and water damage in 1920. It was cold in there, and a cold building was just the place to store highly flammable nitrate film stock.

If Hollywood had had such great storage spaces then more films from that era might have survived.

Some of the films found in Dawson were the only existing copies – but no one would know that until 1978. Before anyone realized they are valuable, the reels from

the library became part of the landfill material filling the hole behind the Arctic Brotherhood Hall (now Diamond Tooth Gerties).

Thus the newsreels, cartoons and shorts were safely frozen in time in the cold Dawson City ground.

pened next, read Michael Gates’ History Hunting in the Yukon, pages 221 to 225, “There’s Film in Them Thar Hills.”

The short version is that the films were rediscovered in 1978.

They were carefully extracted from the earth and shipped by

military plane – since they were deemed too dangerous for commercial aircraft – to Ottawa where they were teased apart and transferred to safer film stock.

Some of them were shown in 2004 during that year’s short film festival, with music provided by

Barnacle Bob Hilliard.

Now, with the assistance of Yukon Energy, the Dawson City Museum has them in digital form and will be showing them in its theatre room this summer. While the museum has access to all of the material, three show reels have been created (with Barnacle’s music), and these will be featured on a rotating basis.

Each of the three reels contains newsreel footage, serious and whimsical shorts, and maddeningly incomplete snippets.

This new attraction was launched on May 22.

Yukon Energy’s Janet Patterson was there to accept a gift from grateful museum chair, Debbie Winston.

“For Yukon Energy, this is an extremely worthwhile cause,” Patterson wrote on the company’s blog. “And one that fits with our values.

Whether it’s saving old film footage or saving electricity, it’s all about valuing what we have and using it wisely.”

Fundraising Fun avec Vin A bout a year ago, I worked with Yukon Artists @ Work on a project called “Canvas Confidential,” a fundraiser to help Yukon artists if illness prevented them from working.

As part of this event, we hosted a wine tasting, and had very specific criteria for the chosen wines.

First, we had to order wines from the BC Liquor Corp. list, which anyone can do through the Yukon Liquour Corp. (YLC).

Our second criteria was that the wines needed to be rated at least 90 points by one or more wine publications.

The creation of this numeric ranking system is credited to American wine critic, Robert Parker, and his magazine The Wine Advocate.

Other publications like Wine Spectator and The Wine Enthusiast have also adopted this approach.

Colour, flavour and mouth feel, regional weather of a particular year, the blend of grapes, and the aging process all contribute to the rating.

Wine Spectator tasters review wines on the following 100-point scale: 95-100 Classic: a great wine.

90-94 Outstanding: a wine of superior character and style.

85-89 Very good: a wine with special qualities.

80-84 Good: a solid, well-made wine.

75-79 Mediocre: a drinkable wine that may have minor flaws.

50-74 Not recommended.

So any wine rated at over 80 points will be worthwhile serving, and anything over 90 is usually an exceptional experience. But critics suggest that the pursuit by wine growers of these favourable numeric scores has drawn winemakers to produce more homogenous styles of wine.

There may be some truth to this. If you taste a Chardonnay, or a Viognier from California, Australia, increasingly Canada, and even France or Italy, there is often a somewhat generic taste — heavy on the oak, relatively high alcohol content, buttery, and a slightly viscous mouth feel. I encountered just that with a 2011 French Viognier called Three Winds Viognier, which goes for $16.30 at the YLC.

highest rated vintage in the nine years I’ve been enthusing about this wine.

This blend of Sangiovese and Merlot grapes needs to be opened and allowed to breath for one to two hours before drinking (taste a splash right when you open it and then again after two hours, and you be amazed at the change that breathing makes).

Look for hints of cherry, flowers and maybe some tobacco, all balanced in a way that only 600-plus years of wine making experience can yield.

Serve with a piece of aged Parmesan cheese, a good steak dinner, or at your next fundraising effort.

It will be a fabulous summer treat.

It’s not a bad wine, just predictable.

Our third selection criterion was to keep the price per bottle under $24. It is no great accomplishment to find a good wine with an unlimited budget, so for me, this limit makes it a fun challenge to find new wines.

One wine we selected for the event was the Mazzei family’s Badiola Toscana red blend, from the hills of Tuscany, in Italy.

As a result of a trip to Tuscany 10 years ago, my taste in wine was permanently changed. In 10 days I went from being a French and California wine drinker, to a man convinced that reds from Tuscany would comprise my wines of choice if I were marooned on a desert island.

The wines of the Mazzei family would be among the top on my list. This family has been making wines outside of Florence since the 1300s and is credited with coining the term Chianti to describe red wines of the region.

Today this family still makes a range of spectacular red Tuscan wines, with Badiola Toscana being the value-priced offering.

hristian Pritchard dishes up what he calls gastrotainment, via television shows, social media, cooking classes, catering, and his website ChrisCooking.com. Pritchard has been the guest chef on various TV shows, including The Food

Network’s show “Summer’s Best;” CBC’s “Steven and Chris;” and CityTV’s “Breakfast Television.”

He also created, wrote, produced, and starred in the Impression award-nominated series “Mission Meal” and the series “Diggin’ Durham.”

And for the next week he’ll enable us to see the Yukon culinary scene through his eyes.

To get us started, here’s his recipe for Arctic char that plays on Northern flavours.

Sesame and Poppy Seed encrusted Arctic Char Filets (Although caribou was my weapon of choice this time, I’ve also used pork, lamb, beef and moose with great success.)

Serves four INGREDIENTS 4 Arctic Char filets 1/2 cup sesame seeds 1/2 cup poppy seeds 2 tsps unsalted butter Olive oil (spruce tip infused, if you have it)

1/4 cup birch tree syrup 1 tsp grated garlic a dash of chili flakes 1/3 cup of Yukon Brewing Lager

METHOD • Combine poppy seeds and sesame seeds in a bowl.

• Press the top side of the Arctic char filet onto the seeds to form a crust.

• In a sauté pan, melt butter in medium-ish high heat. Place fish into pan and crisp both sides (three or four minutes per side).

• Place in 400-degree oven for five minutes until done.

• In another saucepan place Yukon Brewing Lager, birch tree syrup, garlic, and chili flakes.

Heat until texture is smooth, sweet and with a little heat.

• Place sauce on bottom of plate, followed by fish.

Serve with steamed kale and morel-mashed potatoes.

At Home, In a Pub, In Berlin

eighbourhood pubs are a European invention. A place where neighbours meet, after work for a glass of suds, in the early evening for a game of cards or a round of darts, or after dinner for a night cap and exchange of opinions on the latest news (actually, opinions are always on the menu).

Neighbourhood pubs are the places where public opinion, vox populi, is manufactured.

This is the place where one can feel, if so inclined, the “pulse of the nation.” It is here where the “little guys” congregate without congregating, where they celebrate themselves without celebration, where social ties are perpetually renewed without intention. A place where codes of conduct are formulated but not written down, services exchanged without remuneration, juniors critiqued and parental successes assessed. Neighbourhood pubs are mini-societies, made of a few city blocks or half a city street – a “neighbourhood” without being aware of that fact.

In the urban neighbourhoods it is mostly families who have lived in their apartment houses almost forever. No detached houses here, no front or back yards, the people park – and often fix – their cars in the street, not the driveway or garage. Sometimes retired couples or singles, but always long time tenants with a pedigree of residence. And they have a very distinct code regarding social interaction. The people here know the first names of all the children in the block and let them into their own kitchen when the parents are late from work.

People here usually watch, and talk about, the same TV shows and buy at the same store.

They are the people whom you leave a copy of your house key with in case you lose yours, people who will take your COD’s and check your mail while you are on holidays. However, you don’t casually invite your next-door neighbour into your apartment, but you may borrow a cup of sugar from him. Nor do you have the guy from the same floor over for dinner. Meeting socially takes place at the pub at the corner of the street.

The pub is the place where they come together. Where they have a couple of beers and a chaser after a quarrel with the wife or husband, quietly hoping to find someone to share their misery with – the owner frequently fills that billet - where they show off the daughter’s report card or pictures of the boy’s latest girlfriend (a “keeper”), where they let off steam

about work, the price of gasoline and the politics of their hobby club.

The neighborhood pub is not a restaurant, not really an eatery of any kind. There is no menu, no specials, usually not even a kitchen. In Berlin, where I spent most of my twenties, way back, in the days of yore, a time, which my kids, when it comes up in conversation, snicker about, probably not believing that I, too, once had a life similar to theirs today, I occasionally went to the pub at the corner.

Even after many visits over a period of months, I entered as a stranger. Sure, the guests present knew where I lived – second floor, main entrance, number 7 – but they also knew that I was a temporary plant, not here for the long haul. They understood that, once I had my degree from the university, I would leave for greener pastures. Not that they envied me; Berlin, at that time, was surrounded by a wall with a somewhat limited freedom of movement.

So they greeted me with a courteous nod, an acknowledgement of sorts. They never invited me to sit at the Stammtisch, that table reserved for those with status, the regulars, where you had to be a member of the fraternity/sorority (yes, it was co-ed) with a small sign on small chains hanging from a brass support: Stammtisch. Sometimes they would ask me a question about the student revolt, as it was called then. It was, actually, not so much “asking” but more of a somewhat belligerent question or remark, begging for an answer, foghorned across the tables.

We kept our distance, you understand. One or the other patrons would even suggest that maybe we – the collective students of Berlin – should just move to the eastern part, into the workers’ paradise, or indicate the need for a hair cut. They were, by and large, friendly. But I was never invited to join them in a boisterous game of cards, which some of them seemed to be playing all the time. I was very much aware of my strangeness to these folks, and they made no effort to include me.

Often I would eat a snack. Yes, snacks they have at the pubs. And I remember fondly how cheap they were and how good they tasted. Today, reminiscing, with my kids, or friends politely listening, I cannot escape noticing that most of them make faces at the mention of these snacks. Granted, almost all of them cannot be found on a classy menu and most people I know have never tried them, nor will they, ever. However, I must say, that at that time, in that particular environment, these snacks tasted wonderfully delicious, and, given the chance, I would gladly order, and enjoy, them again today.

At Home, In a Pub, in Berlin ... cont’d pfennings at the time), salt and pepper optional. You needed a beer with those on account of the eggs being a tad dry in the mouth. But you did not have to peel them. If the bartender knew you well, he would let you fish for one in the jar, else he would get it for you with a spoon.

Then there was the famous Schmalzstulle, a slice of dark bread, cut off the loaf right in front of you, with a spread of pig fat. Now, don’t get me wrong. We are not talking a strip of fat right off the porker’s back. No, this spread is rendered, melted, and, while still bubbling in its liquid state, diced onions, bacon bits, and apples are added and browned, spices depending on the recipe. The onions and apples would, naturally, settle at the bottom and were invisible once the concoction had re-solidified into a creamy, pearly-white delight. Of course you hoped that the bartender would plunge his knife into the deepest depths of the jar and come up with those delicious fried items and make the Schmalzstulle even more delectable.

Then there were salty pretzels, the large kind that could actually fill you up, peanuts (brought to Berlin by the soldiers of the American occupation forces, but not at all berlinerisch), and dry small, salami-type sausages.

All the snacks were of the itinerant kind, meaning that you could have them while engaged in a conversation with your friends. No need to take knife and fork while gesticulating to make a point - easy on the flow of the exchange and small enough to be inconspicuous as food.

Sometimes, however, on the odd occasion, when the barkeeper/owner was inclined to take a break from drafting beer and pouring Schnaps of all kinds (cherry, apple, pear, apricot), he would be willing to engage in the fabrication of a more elaborate dish. You had to catch him in a good mood because preparation involved the use of a frying pan and a hot plate; and he had to have some fresh homemade potato salad without which the effect would have been halved (and that, in those days, was contingent on his wife, mother, daughter, or girl friend preparing it; my pub owner claimed his grandmother’s efforts for the product). The rather Teutonic name of the dish: Strammer Max. In any event, this lesser meal required the complete attention of the man behind the counter, and you were, for this short moment, his only customer. If you were thus being indulged, it certainly meant acknowledgement of some achievement of status, because, while preparing the Max, the other guests had to wait for their beer and shooter, and even loud protestations or distracting remarks were of no use.

So, the pub owner/barman took the request – order would be the wrong term here –and, as a first step, turn around, put the pan on the burner, and wait for it to heat up. While waiting, he would huff and puff and tell me many times how much he disliked this inconvenience and that, if I were of a lesser stature, he would not have given my request as much as a first

thought. But when the pan signaled, he was completely on the job. He put in a dollop of butter and then a good-size slab of Leberkaes.

Like the forbidden fruit in paradise there is a temptation to call Leberkaes a meat loaf.

But this temptation must be resisted because a Leberkaes is nothing like a meat loaf. For one it is not made of ground meat, hence it does not have the rasping texture; au contraire: Leberkaes is as smooth as the belly of a piglet, whose parents supplied the raw material.

Smooth in touch and feel. The color is a rather healthy rose, not some earth tone brown or even gray. The bits do not stick in your teeth, and putting it in the mouth calls for savory, conscious chewing. It tastes like ground ham, much better, though (it is, after all, made from pork).

Now, as an additional consideration, the Leberkaes in question is no ordinary Leberkaes from the supermarket, made in some factory, wrapped in plastic and transported for days and miles to the establishment. No, this is the real kind, fresh from the butcher at the corner, who makes it on Thursday afternoon. Because he butchers the unfortunate pigs in the morning and then has to hurry to make the sausages, the headcheese and the meat loaf to be ready for the weekend shoppers. In any event, the meat loaf is best on Thursday evenings. It is still warm and juicy and does not need much heat to be rejuvenated.

Once satisfied that the desired temperature had been reached the barman removes the meat and puts it on the plate on which the Max will be served. Two or three eggs are then cracked into the pan and fried, sunny side up. When the egg white gets brown and crispy at the edges my man lifts them out of the pan with the spatula and places them deftly on the meatloaf.

A pickled cucumber, split in half, a tablespoon of mustard, and a good measure of potato salad complete the arrangement. He turns around and places the plate with determination in front of me, finds a knife and fork in some basket, pushes the napkin dispenser my way, and goes back to his business of drafting beer and dispensing shooters. The conversation resumes, and I am left to enjoy the proletarian taste of the Max. And while I am savoring the simple dish I can hear some of the other guests indicating their fancy for their own Max and the owner telling them off; that he would not spend more time preparing food for some nincompoops (Only to relent, after appropriate amounts of begging and prompting).

And I cherished the emotion that, for the time that it took to make the Max, I was, in a fashion, accepted into the fraternity of guests present, commanding the conversation even if there had not been a conversation. I saw myself as one of the neighbors. I felt joyous at this moment, I wanted to tell my new friends all about me, wanted to know all about them, wanted to join them at their table. Of course, I didn’t, because the moment was only in my head. But, for the duration of the evening, I felt that I belonged, I felt at home. In Berlin. In my neighborhood.

On the way out someone wished me a good night.

Changing the World One Story at a Time

Whitehorse resident Shirley McLean is a Yukon reporter/correspondent for APTN National News

I chatted with Shirley about her role as a reporter/correspondent and what makes Yukon news unique.

Sheldon McRae: What is your educational background and professional experience that lead you to where you are today?

Shirley McLean: I attended Grant McEwan College in Edmonton, completing a one-year Aboriginal Communications program and two-year Audiovisual Communications program. I returned to the Yukon and worked for Northern Native Broadcasting as a story producer; for CBC Radio Yukon as a reporter; and for CTV First Story as senior producer in Vancouver. A reporter/correspondent position was posted for the Whitehorse bureau at APTN and I relocated.

Whitehorse is my home.

SMR: What inspired you to become a reporter/correspondent?

I still have to build up people’s trust as well.

SMR: Aboriginal youth now have a stronger voice for positive change, what are common issues that are expressed by them in news stories you’ve covered in the Yukon?

SML: There is the ongoing issue for Aboriginal youth to have a youth shelter. The youth are really trying to advocate for one. One particular young woman was a leader for change, but she was killed a few years back. Her murder is unsolved. I’ve featured stories about her, Angel Carlick. I will continue to do a story about Angel every year, to keep her memory and fight alive.

SMR: What is a news story you reported on that had the most positive impact on you, and why?

SML: The Truth and Reconciliation hearings. Last year there was an event — Gathering around the Fire. It was a three-day healing conference for survivors and their families of The Lower Post Indian Residential School. The school is 10 minutes outside the Yukon and British Columbia border, but many Yukon students attended there as well. I interviewed the survivors, their children and grandchildren.

It’s so important that these ceremonies happen because people are still hurting. It’s also reassuring that our People are moving forward and are trying to let go of that legacy. That was a pretty powerful time. Trying to portray feeling and emotion through television can be difficult— that’s the beauty when we can.

SMR: What inspires you to head out and report on a story?

SML: The story needs to be told.

There are two sides to every story.

It’s a tough beat at times. There’s a lack of trust from First Nations communities; many feel they have been burned because there’s a

Larger than Life

Suzanne Paleczny presents portraits of four Yukon artists in her new show

ou are not alone.

Whitehorse artist Suzanne Paleczny’s seven-foot tall portraits of three Yukon Artists @ Work members tower from the walls of their gallery’s solo show room, almost filling the walls.

Joyce Majiski, Donald Watt and Paul Baker seem to gaze at you from the oil paint.

Paleczny has both created and curated her show, Artists At Work, which you can see until July 3. Along with their portraits, Paleczny displays artwork made by the artists depicted.

She has installed Baker’s metal sculptures on brown wooden crates, arranging them artfully to display his welded metal wrench-birds at different levels.

Gallery audiences rarely see Watt’s papier-mâché models for the enormous snow sculptures he designs. Here, Paleczny offers them to the viewer on snowwhite stands. She also hangs two of Majiski’s caribou prints in progress from lines with clothespins, as they would have been hung to dry in the printmaker’s studio.

Paleczny has written artist’s statements that introduce the show and each painting. She has read and thought deeply about art, craft and the way they embody a kind of knowing, quoting from Martin Heidegger, Karl Marx, Indra Kagis McEwan and Theodor Adorno.

Each painting’s text ends in a series of questions which invites viewers into further contemplation.

The whole show represents a carefully crafted body of thought.

Artists At Work is a serious contribution to the conversation about art and society in the territory, specifically the role of Yukon Artists @ Work, itself. It’s also generous for an artist to so deeply feature the work of other artists in a solo show.

But this show delights on other levels as well.

The brushwork shimmers — different colours reflected off of the different surfaces appearing in the tones of the faces and in light caught around the edges of forms.

Each painting invites you into the artist’s workplace.

Watt’s red Skookum parka pops against a wall of snow, a layered complexity of whites, pale yellows, blues and grays, his snow tools ready.

Majiski’s canvas has been extended to show her whole printing press, its silvery cylinder catching the wintry light from the window behind, the radial lines of its crank tying the composition together.

Artwork by all four artists throughout the gallery can also be found throughout the gallery space. And you can always meet artists working their shifts at the Yukon Artists @ Work Gallery. The cooperatively run business relies on its members’ volunteer hours to remain open. The show Artists At Work adds a new dimension to this opportunity.

The day I visited, Majiski herself was working on the desk.

A viewer exclaimed, “That looks like you!”

Travelin’ Punk

Edmonton band Slates play Sunstroke Music Festival

rom Newfoundland to Jamaica, Sarajevo to Whitehorse, traveling punk rockers Slates are spreading their message and their music.

Hailing from Edmonton, Slates will be bringing their signature fiery, raw, yet melodic style of punk rock to the 2013 Sunstroke Music Festival.

“In the studio, we joke about calling our sound stress-rock,” says drummer Dallas Thompson, “But I think at the heart of it, we’re a punk rock band, though our music is nowhere near as polished as the commercial stuff the industry is trying to label punk these days.

“We all grew up with punk rock; it’s just in our veins.”

Thompson was raised in Whitehorse, but it’s been a while since he last played here with S.O.L., his punk band at the time.

“I haven’t played there with a band since probably ‘99,” he says.

“It’ll be fun to play the old stomping grounds.”

Slates has two full-length albums and four seven-inch records under their belts since their formation in 2008.

tries around eastern Europe.

“We even managed to get into Bosnia and played a show in Sarajevo, which was pretty wild because we basically had to bribe our way into the country,” says Thompson.

Croatia, Switzerland and Slovenia are some of their other destinations, all which are documented in a book that will be for sale at their Whitehorse performance, along with recordings and merchandise.

“We love playing live, we love meeting people, we love traveling around,” he says of their extensive tour schedule. “The best way you can learn about the world is by travelling around, and we kind of have the luxury of being able to do it and play music at the same time.”

The Sunstroke Festival will be Slates’ last performance before they head to StudioChicago in July to record their third full-length album with Steve Albini, who worked with Nirvana and The Pixies.

“By the time we play Sunstroke, we’ll probably have some new stuff ready to go, and we’ll be playing a lot of the old stuff as well,” says Thompson.

He has high hopes for their Whitehorse show, explaining that the more out-of-the-way shows are often the most fun.

“A lot of the time, when you play the bigger cities that have a lot of bands coming through every single day, people kind of get used to it, they become numb to it and it’s just kind of the same thing every day,” he says. “When places are hard to get to, the shows are just a little more fun, you know? It’s nice to go to places where people aren’t overexposed, I guess. We played a couple of weeks in Cuba in 2010… it was one of the first times a punk rock band from North America had ever toured the island, and the shows were wild… people are aching for some live [punk] music, and of course we love to give it to them.”

Thompson says the band is looking forward to sharing their love of live music and punk rock with his hometown.

“I remember loving the scene up there, back in the day,” he says, “I’m hoping that there’s still that excitement.”

Balancing soil, plants, and microenvironments in container gardening

rom my cabin outside of Dawson City, nature’s transformative power is visible.

In the tailing piles left behind by dredge mining, tiny plants push through gravel and beside wheels of abandoned mining equipment.

Beavers glide though dredge ponds. Old roads crumble under new root systems. Micro-ecosystems fill in the valleys between industrial gravel piles.

Left undisturbed, land heals and restores itself. Plants are tenacious little things — imagine what they could do in that famous, well-drained, nutrient-rich soil we read about in gardening books.

Container gardening is one way to obtain this dreamy dirt, especially in some areas of the Yukon where nutrient-thin soil, flooding, drought, and soil contamination, are all potential problems.

Containers do not have to be fancy. If raspberry bushes can grow wild in the gravel beside my front door, the same plant will grow in an old barrel, simple rock enclosure, or in a deep bucket.

Clay containers dry out more quickly than plastic containers, so consider water availability and sun exposure when choosing your materials. If you use wooden containers, line them with gardening cloth or heavy, food-grade plastic stapled in place. Make drainage holes in the containers, through the liners as well, and line the bottom with stones or gravel.

Then, add the components of your dream soil.

Optimum soil for your container depends on a few factors: which plants you plan to grow; the temperature range; and the wind and sun exposure on the site. Consider the plant’s microenvironment when you plan soil components. Plants in sunny and/ or windy spots usually need more water, and certain soil structures encourage water retention.

Willows, for example, grow near water, because they also live in high winds. The water at their root level balances moisture lost through their windblown leaves.

If plants can find a place like this to survive, then a well-intentioned container with rich soil can also support plant life. In this photo, nature takes her course and a road succumbs, outside of Dawson City.

PHOTO: Aimée Dawn Robinson a little clay in the upper level of the soil as clay retains water. But, for carrots, radishes, or potatoes, a lower clay level is better, as impacted clay will inhibit the formation of the veggies.

While it’s tempting to ramp up the soil’s nitrogen levels by adding lots of bone or blood meal to the containers for those tomato seed-

lings you nursed along indoors, too much nitrogen encourages problem insects. Instead, consider rotating crops.

Plant tomatoes in containers that beans grew in last year. The

legume family releases nitrogen into the soil through their roots, leaving behind a good nitrogen level for tomatoes.

To increase this nitrogen release, cut up the whole plant and mix it in with the soil when your bean plants are spent, and let it compost on the spot. Beans and tomatoes both love heat and sun, so the rotating bean/tomato container can stay put in a hot spot near a wall. And when placing containers near walls, leave ample space between the wall and the container. Cramped plants with poor air circulation won’t grow evenly, and you need to move comfortably between the wall and the container to tend to all sides of the garden.

Plants derive energy and absorb nutrients from the air as well as soil.

Remove the top four inches of the soil in your container garden once per year, before planting, if you’re in an area where soil contamination is an issue — especially if you plan to grow medicinal plants and/or food. This step will help remove wind-born containments from your dream soil.

S

ome kids say they are bored during the summer, but I won’t be able to say that with all the animals at our farm.

We have three rabbits and one baby bunny, 33 laying chickens, 53 layer chicks, 115 meat chicks, 25 turkey babies, three adult quails, plus five baby quails and a puppy.

Our baby bunny is the only one its mama gave birth to. It has black fur and looks very cute.

Our layer chicks are growing fast but not as fast as the meat chicks — the meat chicks also stink a lot more. We got the chicks on exactly the same day and the meat chicks are already double the size of the layer chicks.

When we put the meat chicks in with the turkey poults, who are a week older and twice the size, the turkeys were scared of the tiny yellow fluff balls. It was hil-

arious to watch them — so scared that they were all crowding in a corner and cheeping like crazy when one of the meat chicks took a step closer.

They got used to them after a while though. We were rolling on the floor laughing when we saw the cute little turkeys strutting around and fluffing themselves up, practicing to be big.

ing up and down hills and climbing over logs about the same size as herself when we go hiking.

Our puppy sleeps in our greenhouse, which is also where we are raising our baby quails. We incubated the eggs from our grown up quails that we bought last fall.

Quails are very good at laying eggs, they lay one (sometimes two) eggs per hen each day. The only drawbacks to quails are that you can’t have them run free (they will run away since they are ground birds and don’t roost in the same place every night) and their eggs are too small to use in recipes (unless you are willing to use five or six quail eggs in place of one chicken egg).

But they taste great sunny side up or cooked in the shell.

We have to watch out for foxes now, too, with our new chicks, bunny, and puppy. We didn’t have any problems with foxes last year (although the fox did get a chicken when I left the door to the chicken coop open by accident).

The reason why they are coming this year is probably because there was such a late spring. Vincent, my younger brother, is very excited about hunting the fox.

Once, to my mom’s disapproval, he hit the fox on the head with Daddy’s sledge hammer. He was lucky the fox didn’t attack him afterwards.

So, with taking care of and playing with all those animals, plus writing for What’s up Yukon, I won’t have time for saying “I’m bored” this summer.

Tudo Bem – It’s All Good!

T

here is this Portuguese pastry I would kill or die for, whichever comes first: pastel de nata!

The sound of it alone makes me want to catch a plane and leave for Portugal!

Natas are small tarts of fluffy pastry filled with a soft-melting pudding made of eggs, sugar and cream, topped off with a hint of cinnamon.

So when my auntie and I arrived in Lisbon, it went without saying that the first thing in the morning would be to find ourselves a café where we would get a galao (the Portuguese version of a latte) and natas. We decided to keep our experience as authentic as possible, so we were looking for a café in the back alleys where all the locals would go. When we found one, it became clear that an authentic, local café in Portugal means there is no second thought wasted on interior design or cosiness. Still the customers that apparently came here every morning seemed to feel perfectly at home.

So did the owners, an elderly long-time married couple with dark hairs and fierce looks. So much so that the following happened: After we had gotten what we wanted, we sat down at one of the plain tables. Full of anticipation, I closed my eyes to entirely enjoy the first bite of my nata and the accompanying explosion of taste in my mouth – when all of a sud-

den I was cruelly interrupted by loud yelling. I reluctantly opened my eyes and saw the two hosts battling a marital disagreement.

I don’t speak any Portuguese, but sometimes my imagination gets the best of me (and it is full of clichés, I admit). So I heard the husband say, “How come you spoil this lazy dog of a son of yours so much?”

“And since when are you the parenting expert?” the wife replied with disregard, “I raised those kids with no help whatsoever while you were chasing short skirts, you old donkey!”

“I always only had eyes for you grumpy lady, though God alone knows why. I just want our son to finally leave home and provide for his own family like I do,” the husband defended himself.

“Like you do?” his wife snorted.

“So how come I have to work like a horse when you provide for the family?!” And so forth…

I managed to take my eyes off the couple and looked around to see how everybody else would react to this harsh arguing. To my surprise nobody even seemed to notice. A newspaper page was flipped; a line of lipstick was corrected using a pocket mirror – business as usual. I exchanged an astonished look with my auntie and we silently agreed to be as local as possible. Hence I went back to minding my own business as well: the nata!

Pastel de nata After we finished breakfast, I took three to four extra natas with me and off we went to explore Lisbon. (One of my favourite cities in the world and I am not a city girl at all, that’s why I ended up in the Yukon, but that’s a different story…)

Needless to say, we were back the next morning to our café. And like the sky after a big storm can appear all innocent like nothing has ever happened, our hosts behind the counter seemed to be in perfect harmony: a playful word to the husband; a friendly clap on the wife’s behind.

On the other side of the counter nobody even seemed to notice. I decided to be as local as possible, so I shut off my imagination, closed my eyes, and opened my mouth to welcome the first bite of my personal piece of perfect harmony!

Tudo bem! the Portuguese say — it’s all good! Especially on a day with pastry like that.

Sweethearts ‘til the End Dawsonites John and Madeleine Gould find love during wartime

A

chance encounter during wartime turned into a love that lasted more than 65 years.

In 1944, John Gould was a young Royal Canadian Air Force pilot stationed in St. Catharines, Ontario for flight training.

He was a long way from his family’s mine at Nugget Hill outside of Dawson City, but he was pursuing his dream of flying — and fulfilling his patriotic duty.

One night he and a friend crashed a dance at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.

“In uniform we had no trouble getting in,” he noted in an interview shortly before his death.

John sat on the sidelines and overheard two girls nearby.

“They were arguing,” John said. “One wanted to dance and the other didn’t, so I stood up and said ‘I’ll dance with you.’”

That was John’s first dance of many with Madeleine Anita Lavigueur.

“I courted her every chance I got,” he said, and the pretty factory worker was equally smitten.

A few months later, John was sent on courses in Quebec and then posted to Great Britain, but they did not lose touch.

In fact, Madeleine travelled to Burnaby, British Columbia to stay with his mother for a time.

“I got a letter from Mother, telling me she liked her,” he said.

John shipped home in August and they got married October 6, 1945 — he in his uniform, she in a smart skirt suit — in her hometown of Greenfield, Ontario.

The next year they moved north to the

She was known to quip, “Sure the cabin had running water - but only when I ran up the hill with the buckets.”

Over the next decades, John and Madeleine moved into Dawson to raise a family, and helped build the community through paid work and volunteer contributions.

As granddaughter Gemma Lilace McIntyre-Gould remembers, they did this as a team. “They loved everything about each other,” McIntyre-Gould says. “Grandpa told me that even up until Granny passed away they were always working on the relationship because that was the only way one ever lasts. They supported each other in whatever they were doing.”

After a battle with cancer, Madeleine died at home in 2010. Less than two years later, John died in his sleep.

Their ashes are buried — together, as in life — in the Dawson Catholic Cemetery.

Madeleine took to life in the territory: photos show her making ice cream with her mother-in-law and cradling a Grizzly cub.

She had grown up in rural communities and was used to working hard, but was also used to having amenities like indoor plumbing.

Adäka Aims to Include Everyone

Festival celebrating First Nation arts and culture runs June 21 to 27

T

he Adäka Cultural Festival will kick off for the third time in Whitehorse on Friday, June 21, which is also National Aboriginal Day. Adäka (pronounced Aw-dawkah) means “coming into the light” in the Southern Tutchone language and each year this festival continues to expand, like the sun rising on a new day, spreading its light further across the land.

This year, the Adäka Cultural Festival will feature 28 performance groups, 44 visual artists and 50 public workshops over six days in Whitehorse.

Starr Drynock is one of the artists who will be performing at this year’s festival. She will be singing traditional songs from the Nlakapamux Nation and will be dancing with the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers and the Kwanlin Dun All Nations Dance Group.

She anticipates the exposure will help her career.

“I was really happy when they asked me to perform and I look at it as a really good opportunity for me to gain more exposure,” Drynock says. “Just from smaller public performances that I have done, people have asked me to sing at their potlatches and celebrations.”

Drynock moved to the Yukon five-and-a-half years ago. She was born and raised in Meritt, B.C. where her family told her that she was a “carrier of songs.” She also happens to be an embodiment of

“Everyone is invited,” says Caili Steel, associate producer of the festival. “It is a festival showcasing First Nation artists, but it is for everyone to come and celebrate our Yukon talent. It is a place to create cross-cultural understanding and to build awareness that is integral to community development and appreciation.”

The festival is also about fuelling performers’ inspiration.

“We are focused on creating as many opportunities and possibilities as we can, for all of the people involved, so that artists continue to be inspired, make connections and in doing so, create new opportunities to facilitate their own growth and expansion,” she says.

In addition, the festival provides opportunities for people beginning to learn an art form to share it with an audience.

“We really do try to balance the skill levels of the emerging, established and master artists, so that there is a constant exchange of ideas, knowledge and skill development,” Steel says.

The festival is always seeking to improve upon their partnerships within the community to branch out and offer as many different events as they can. This year they have partnered with local organizations Bringing Youth Towards Equality (BYTE), Northern Cultural Expressions Society and the Yukon Film Society to host the

When Drynock went to her first Kwanlin Dun All Nations Dance Group practice she realized how willing they were to teach.

“All of the people are such great teachers, who always tell me, ‘Don’t be afraid to ask’ and they showed me not to be afraid to try something new,” Drynock says. “It’s interesting to learn about the different cultures and ways of other First Nations people and how they compare to my own.

And it’s neat to see which rules and customs apply and vary, depending on the tradition of the people and which area they are from. Within this group I am able to teach them my songs and in turn, I am learning theirs.”

The Adäka festival is all about sharing culture – sharing among the different First Nations and presenting First Nations culture to all the other different cultural groups in the Yukon, too.

“Partnerships are so important”, Steel says. “They are a way to work across lines and engage the community, to diversify programming and continue expanding out.”

And really, that is what this festival is all about.

The Whitehorse Public Library and Gwaandak Theatre have helped to bring in storyteller Reneltta Arluk, who is Inuvialuit, Gwich’in and Chipewyan-Cree descent originally from the Northwest Territories, to tell stories

The Aboriginal Sport Circle will be doing daily Arctic sports demonstrations behind the cultural centre, such as high kicks and finger pulls, and the Family Literacy Coalition will be offering events and activities for young children in a tent behind the cultural centre.

The Yukon College will host the free community feast on Sunday at noon in the Longhouse and the Yukon Arts Centre has provided support for the festival’s art gallery and marketplace, located inside the cultural centre.

ow that you’ve selected a tent and figured out how to set it up, let’s consider some more tips to get the best use out of it and to make it last for many years.

The fly that came with the tent is essential. No matter what the weather is like at set-up time, put the fly on the tent because it, and the floor, are the only waterproof parts on the structure. You and all your equipment will be soaked in short order if you don’t use the fly.

All the seams on the fly and the floor should be seam-sealed prior to the use. Seam sealer usually comes with the tent, but is available where camping equipment is sold.

The fly also has tie-down loops, to which you can add short shockcord loops and light, sturdy cord to secure the tent to nearby bushes or self-made rock-piles.

The stress caused by wind can be eased by the elastic cord. The elastic cord stretches with the wind pressure on the tent and eases the strain on the tent pegs and peg loops. You should always tie your tent down any time it is set up in an open area, like an alpine meadow or a beach.

Use the manufactured “footprint.” A foot-print is a tent accessory which goes under the tent and is the same shape as the tent floor, attaching to the tent with pegs. It helps to water-proof the

Most modern backpacking tents can be picked up while still set up, held upside down and shaken to remove sand and twigs. Small plastic whisks and dust-pans are also available, although carrying these around in your backpack means extra weight.

If a tent is wet when taken down, it should be set up or hung to be completely dried before storage. Even with synthetic materials, dampness can have longterm effects on the lifetime of the tent.

Weather extremes and regular usage can lead to damage of zippers, floor, door netting and the material making the tent and fly.

Repair kits from the manufacturer or simple generic kits are available locally and repairs should be done ASAP.

Duct tape is invaluable for quick repairs in the field – even a small amount wrapped around a tent peg will come in handy if you don’t want to carry the whole roll.

Many tents have been damaged or ruined by airborne ashes and sparks from the campfire — especially the big fires we all want after supper. Your set-up location should be up-wind and at least 2030 metres from the fire location.

If the wind suddenly changes, dampen down the fire or at least put a tarp over the tent.

When the weather allows, keep the doors open as much as possible (screens zipped up tight) to allow ventilation and minimize condensation, which collects on your sleeping bag and other equipment.

In the tight confines of a small tent, snoring can be a major problem. In such a case lean over and give your buddy a little kiss on the cheek before bed. You can then sleep like a stone while your pal lies awake in fear of what might happen next.
