ruce Springsteen’s music is often the soundtrack of my weekend mornings.

There is something about waking up and fumbling through the first cup of coffee while listening to Springsteen’s unpretentious — and mostly irony-free — heartland rock that tends to make me believe the day ahead has worthwhile things in store.

It’s not that the themes are always light or the lyrics are always rosy, it’s that even through his most plaintive songs he manages to convey a sense of empathy and (dare I say it) hope. The implicit message is: someone understands and someone has survived.

On one recent Saturday a.m. I listened to perhaps his most plaintive album: Nebraska (1982). It begins with the wailing of a lonely harmonica and proceeds to weave a tapestry of burdensome American life.

For example, his song “Highway Patrolman” tells a complex story of brotherly love and obligation on both sides of the law.

As the final notes trailed off I wandered aimlessly around the kitchen, feeling not exactly sad, but rather full of gravity. It was in this state that I grabbed my disc-golf equipment and headed to Mount Mac for a quick round.

I hit everything. I nailed longdistance birdie puts, I saved par after flubbing my tee shot, and I wove my disc through stands of unforgiving evergreens.

When I finished the 18th hole I realized I had just tied my best round of the season thus far — and the mood created by Nebraska pervaded the whole enterprise.

It’s a stretch, but I feel compelled to consider the possibility that Springsteen’s album caused my season-best round.

Like Nebraska disc golf is built on quiet acknowledgement rather than adrenaline-fueled extroversion. My score might have been very different had it been proceeded by Appetite for Destruction.

With that in mind I would hereby like to extend an invitation to Bruce Springsteen: anytime you feel like it, you are more than welcome to play a round of discgolf with me at Mount Mac. I will provide the discs as well as a few key pointers. The offer stands as long as it needs to.

Truth be told, I feel a little funny calling you “The Boss” until I’ve seen you nail a birdie putt from 40 feet out.

Yukon Culinary Festival trumpets the deliciousness of homegrown food

Blake Rogers, executive director of the Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon, says one festival goal is to lodge the Yukon in people’s minds as a place with delicious food.

“Food might not be the reason why people come to the Yukon, but it’s one of the things that help enhance the trip while they’re here,” says Rogers.

Beer is also a trip enhancer.

“I’ve got to say I love all Yukon beer – Yukon Brewing makes some great products,” Rogers says.

A chef from Toronto has been invited to host the festival and help those of us already here to see through fresh eyes what the Yukon has to offer.

“During each activity, chef Christian Pritchard will be teaming up with a different culinary expert,” Rogers says. “My favou-

She is one of the driving forces behind a five-day event taking place next week that aims to share the deliciousness of Yukon flavours with people who live here, people who visit here, and chefs who cook here.

Genest, together with Yukon Brewing, the Yukon Outfitters Association, Air North and a handful of other businesses and not-forprofit organizations have worked together to create the Yukon Culinary Festival: A Celebration of Local Food and Homegrown Cuisine, which kicks off on Thursday, June

rite part, the thing that makes me the most excited about this event is the diversity of it all.”

On Thursday, June 20, Pritchard will be at the Fireweed Community Market to buy ingredients from local producers and cook them during three demonstrations between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The next day there will be a Bannock Bake Off at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre. That evening is the Midnight Sun Food Crawl in which eating establishments across the territory have been invited to participate by staying open until 1 a.m. and serving Yukon-based tapas-style dishes in the price range of $10.

On Saturday, June 22 Miche Genest, the Yukon Historical and Museums Association and the Yukon Quest are hosting a presentation and cooking demonstration that features traditional First Nations cooking techniques, food from the Gold Rush era and the special food eaten by dogs and people mushing along the Yukon Quest trail.

Also, the Yukon First Nations Tourism Association, Adäka Cultural Festival, and the Yukon College is hosting a free feast between noon and 6 p.m. at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre.

On Monday, June 24 the festival moves to Dawson City.

Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in interpreter Fran Morberg-Green will present a talk on “the invisible world of the Shaman, our connection to the spirit world, and… the inter-

connectedness between plants, animals and people.”

There will be more free food: wild crafted local teas, and berry jams served with homemade bannock.

Local farmers, fishmongers and other food artisans already have a bounty of ripe and ready ingredients to be showcased in the festival.

Colin O’Neill, manager of the Fireweed Community Market, says when chef Christian Pritchard strolls through the stalls he’ll find fresh produce such as kale, Swiss chard and herbs from various producers. Also currently available are halibut, arctic char, rockfish and scallops caught near Skagway from Frisky Fresh Fish; freshbaked breads from Birdhouse Catering and Home Sweet Home Baking; and goat cheese from Lendrum Ross Farm.

“There are some fantastic farms in the Yukon and these folks are incredibly passionate about what they’re doing and there’s nothing better for a farmer who’s trying to sell their produce than to find a market of people who are equally passionate about buying locally produced, fresh, top-quality food,” O’Neill says.

The Yukon Culinary Festival takes place at various venues in Whitehorse, June 20 to 23 and in Dawson City on June 24.

Lovely Artworks Carry Disturbing Message

Dawson artist Veronica Verkley’s exhibition runs to June 21

ne of the many projects under the umbrella of the Dawson City Arts Society is the ODD Galley, which is housed on a corner of the ground floor of the Odd Fellows Hall.

The gallery mounts works by local, regional and international artists — leaning somewhat to-

The latest exhibit is by Veronica Verkley, a Dawson artist who lives off-grid and has been a regular on the faculty of the Yukon School of Visual Arts since 2007.

Them Thar Hills: A Backwoods Alphabestiary is a collection of 26 roughly framed dioramas, running from A to Z, featuring creatures both real and imagined, in settings that are at times naturalistic

the exhibit notes typed in an oldfashioned font on cards fastened beside each item.

The note beside the busy beaver working on its lodge comments on its place in the history of Northern exploration and development in a straightforward fashion, but the card on the diorama is more whimsical: “Beaver skookumizes the renovations.”

The next card, focussing on

the caribou, is also factual, but the diorama shows a single caribou blocked by a pipeline, and is captioned: “Caribou discovers a new thing.”

Later on a coyote is shown in a landfill with the caption: “Coyote learns to forage.”

The fanciful entries in the bestiary include the ice worm, the jackalope, the No See Um and the Sasquatch, each with a card crafted in pseudoscientific terms describing the creature, its habits, and habitat.

In one particularly striking image, a pressure-distorted mammoth is shown lying between geological seams with the caption: “Mammoth sifts through paydirt,” a reference to the number of bones and tusks that have been uncovered by placer miners over the last 115 years.

Finally, Verkley has added the lynx to her fanciful creatures by linking them to her popular short film A Working Cat’s Guide to the Klondike, which won the Audience Choice Award at the 2012 Dawson International Short Film Festival and was enthusiastically applauded at this year’s Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race.

This is a spoof of mushing in which she imagined that cats might once have been used in place of dogs.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

The Solstice: What it is and things to do

I

admit it. I’m a freak. In the morning, instead of checking Facebook, I check an ephemeris – a minute-to-minute record tracking the degrees of the planets as they travel through the zodiac.

It’s a book written half in Astrology’s arcane symbols for the planets and signs, and half in numerals. It lets me know the instant the Moon dives into Pisces; Mercury falls into Retrograde; or when Mars rolls into Scorpio. For Christmas last year, all I wanted from Santa was The New American Ephemeris for the 20th Century, 1900-2000 at Midnight by Rique Pottenger and Neil F. Michelsen.

Sadly, it was too heavy to bring to the Yukon. I read biodymanics (the marriage of farming and astrology) calendars and charts for fun.

I keep an eye on what is going in the planetary, ahem, world.

Many exciting things happen in the sky on a daily basis, but the Solstices and Equinoxes that divide the pagan year are the four most widely celebrated pagan holidays.

Not everyone throws Imbolc, Lam-

mas or Beltane parties, though I highly recommend them. Samhaim lives on through Hallowe’en. Yule influenced Christmas. Solstice is also known as Litha.

In pre-industrial times Litha was celebrated with bonfires, feasts, fire-jumping, processions festooned with garlands of St. John’s Wort and other yellow flowers, and by walking naked through forests (okay, I know people who still do that at parties).

Litha was considered a good moment to cut wood for making magick wands, divining and dowsing rods, and to hold rites encouraging inspiration, good crops, planetary healing and general communion with nature. Ashes from Litha bonfires were cast onto fields to ensure a bountiful crop.

Astrologically, Solstice is the minute when the Sun enters the zodiac sign of Cancer. This minute is considered Solstice worldwide, and although few people remember the part about the Sun moving into Cancer, the roots of the holiday are astrological. This year,

the Sun enters Cancer at 10:04 p.m. (PST) on Thursday, June 20, hence, the exact Solstice moment is 10:04 p.m. Much Solstice activity revolves around sun worship, and the Sun in Cancer means a reflective, expansive time for nurturing plants and the fertility of field. Cancer is also very moony sign. And the Moon will be travelling through the following signs of the zodiac during Solstice week: intimate, depth seeking and intense Scorpio, and adventuresome Sagittarius. But the full Moon on Sunday, June 23 at 3:32 p.m. (PST) will be in Capricorn, bringing a sense to purpose to us after the many all-night parties throughout the week.

In the northern hemisphere the Summer Solstice is also known as the longest day of the year. In Whitehorse the sun will rise at 4:27 a.m. on June 20 (the actual Solstice day), and set at 11:37 p.m. for a total day length of 19 hours, 9 minutes and 19 second.

Solar noon will be at 2:02 PM. After this exciting moment, we enter the waning period of the Sun. By Friday June 21, the day length will already be one full minute shorter.

But some communities aren’t worried about the days shortening for a little while. In Old Crow, the sun rose at 2:44 a.m. on May 28, and has continuous daylight until it finally sets on July 15 at 2:06 a.m.

That’s a very long day.

Worldwide, Solstice is celebrated between June 21 and 23 with a traditional series of pagan festivals including Midsummer’s Eve, or Midsummer, which fall on June 22 and 23. In Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Estonia and, at some parties in the Yukon, Midsummer’s Eve is celebrated with as much vigour as Christmas and New Year’s Eve. In Canada, National Aboriginal

Mystery authors Vicki Delany and Barbara Fradkin

T

wo southern authors alone on a road trip through the Yukon. Sounds like a good premise for a novel, doesn’t it?

On June 4, two Canadian mystery writers, Vicki Delany and Barbara Fradkin, touched down in Whitehorse for a 10-day book tour of the Yukon. It will include several events in the capital, as well as stops in Haines Junction, Pelly Crossing and Dawson City.

“It’s a busy time,” Fradkin says. “Every day has at least one event. Driving around will be its own adventure, but Vicki brought her GPS (which is named Smithers) so hopefully it knows the Yukon roads.”

They are not total strangers to the territory, however: both Ontario-based writers have been here before — Fradkin on a paddling adventure and Delany as a

tourist — and both decided to set books in the North.

Delany’s Klondike Gold Rush Series is set in and around Dawson City in the late 1800s. The most recent, Gold Web, will be released in December.

“To my considerable surprise I found no one had written a mystery series about this time and place,” Delany says. “I think it’s fascinating and so far my readers do too — they love learning about the Klondike.”

Fradkin’s latest book, The Whisper Legends, is set just over the border in Nahanni National Park in the Northwest Territories.

It is the ninth book in her awardwinning police procedural series featuring Inspector Michael Green.

“I came up here on a wilderness river trip two years ago and felt as if I needed to set a story (in the

North),” Fradkin says. “There is a peace and a danger (in the Nahanni) that go hand-in-hand.

“It was also interesting to see how Inspector Green would do up against a new adversary: nature. He’s a city boy, but he comes to the Nahanni when his daughter disappears on a canoe trip.”

The authors are each mothers to three children and had long careers in other areas — Fradkin as a psychologist and Delany as a computer programmer — before becoming full-time writers. The two met at mystery writing events in Ontario, like Bloody Words and the Scene of the Crime, and decided to take this trip together once Fradkin’s book was released.

“So far we’ve survived,” Delany laughs.

Both are very encouraging to

budding Yu k o n mystery writers. “ Yo u have to read a lot to be a good writer,” Delany says.

Fradkin adds that, “The most important thing for writers is to keep believing in themselves and keep going. You’re going to get criticism and you should pay attention to that feedback, but keep practicing and you’ll get better.”

On June 13 Delany and Fradkin will be at the Dawson City Museum presenting Mounties, Miners and Madams: The History of the North Through Fiction from 7 to 9 p.m.

Their last engagement in the Yukon will be on June 14 in Whitehorse at the Coles Bookstore from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to present their work at the

Local Pilot Honoured For Three Decades Of Service

Kelly Collins received Yukon Transportation’s Order of Polaris

ocal flight instructor Kelly Collins has spent nearly three decades helping Yukoners earn their wings.

This month he was given the Order of Polaris, one of the Yukon Government’s top honours, awarded to Yukon aviators (and the odd Outsider) for service to the territory, its people and its unique culture.

Collins, who is retiring this year, has spent 27-years training more than 300 pilots from various schools in Whitehorse as well as satellite programs in Atlin, Ross River, Faro and Dawson City.

Until recently he had trained the majority of all private and commercial fixed wing pilots in the territory.

Collins has spent the last twelve years as chief flight instructor with Whitehorse Air Services — the last flight-training

school in Canada’s North.

He’s taught everyone from the young to the retired the secrets of flight.

“It’s a pretty wide spectrum,” he says. “For some people it’s just a personal challenge, it’s a goal that’s not that easy to do. A lot of our students are folks who have always had a dream to fly.”

Collins is known for his handson approach to training, sitting fearlessly alongside would-be pilots attempting everything from basic aircraft control to emer-

gency maneuvers, falls, spins, takeoffs and landings.

“I call it ‘knowledge through a fire hose,’” he says. “It comes fast and furious… and it’s handson from day one.”

After a while the training becomes reflexive — and marginally less terrifying.

“The better you get at the machinery, the farther out your awareness goes from all around you, to in the aircraft and outside,” he says.

Collins doesn’t just teach his students to fly, he teaches them to think like pilots.

“Learning how to fly is one thing — learning when to fly and when not to fly and what not to do and how to stay out of trouble, that all comes under the heading of pilot decision making and that’s probably the big variable in keeping people safe,” he says.

Kelly Collins will be retiring this year.

Getting a pilot’s license is hard work, and it’s not cheap —about $9,500 for a recreational pilot, $14,000 for a private license — but it’s probably more likely to lead to a job than your undergrad degree, and you’re guaranteed a good office view.

“It does do something for your confidence,” he says.

“You’re doing something that, for me anyway, was a little extraordinary and [Collins] helped me do it.

“At times when I was discouraged, or dissatisfied with my performance, or whatever I was doing and he’d work me through it,” he says.

As a recipient of the Order of Polaris, Collins joins the ranks of Canadian icons like WWII fighter pilot Ian Willoughby Bazalgette, and pioneering Canadian engineers Ronald John Baker and Alexander Graham Bell.

Winner! The Most Scrumptious Pastry on the Planet

in a discussion about food. We mentioned our eager anticipation of the sublime, but underrated, Portuguese tarts. It was at that juncture that Andy became animated and told us about a (in his words) life-changing event he had experienced in Portugal. He’d taken a trip to Belem, a small town near Lisbon where the pastel de nata originated. He explained that the tarts first emerged from a monastery in the town of Belem in 1837. At that time in history monasteries were losing their support from the government, so the monks needed to find a way to continue to make a living. Egg whites were used to starch the monks’ clothes, thus leaving a surplus of egg yolks. Enter the first creative batch of Pasteis de Belem, as they were first called. To this day the monastery guards the secret recipe, although many variations exist in Portugal and other parts of Europe. Pasteis de natas even spread to the Portuguese owned island of Macau off the coast of Hong Kong, and a version became a mainstay of the traditional Chinese dim sum meal.

We are not the only ones who treasure this dessert. In a 2009 survey of the best foods in the world (http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/sep/13/best-foodsin-the-world) the Manchester Guardian ranked it 15th, a mere 13 or 14 places below its deserved spot. Moreover, in Portugal they now have cafés serving only pasteis de nata and espresso; why would you serve anything else?

On our most recent trip, after a lingering visit to Porto’s Libaria Lello (which rightly claims to be the most beautiful bookstore in the world), we felt a little peckish and headed to the adjoining cafe for - that’s right - a pastel de nata and an espresso. A warm batch was at-that-minute coming out of the oven. Now, some people go on pilgrimages to find enlightenment. Eldo and I found it right there, in that little café the moment our taste buds embraced the warm, superb custard of those humble, yet divine tarts.

During this last visit to Portugal, we began walking south from the Spanish-Portuguese border - this time toward Fatima. During the first part of the trip we retraced our steps walking in the opposite direction through the same scenic landscape and villages, even staying at some of the same hotels and meeting the same friendly proprietors we’d met the first two trips. I was starting to feel that perhaps I’d done Portugal and it might be time to try another country.

However, now that I’m back in the Yukon I have been obsessing about custard tarts.

I have tried several times to replicate the recipe with limited success. I think possibly one more Portuguese trip is in order, and maybe to Belem this time.

Our love affair with the most scrumptious pastry on the planet began in an unlikely place - Old Crow. One dark night, during the tenth day of -40C, the most northerly community in the Yukon provided the impetus for this tantalizing discovery.

My friend, this strange guy who doesn’t believe in seasons, was searching the net, looking for that ideal geographic location on the planet: not too cold, not too rainy, nor sweltering hot. His research unearthed Madeira, a Portuguese island off the coast of Morocco, boasting the most moderate climate in the world: 20C year round.

Fast forward to five years later and my friend from Old Crow has moved to Dawson City and we are about to embark on a European winter vacation together. I suggest Belgium where my brother and his family live. After four years in Old Crow, for obvious reasons, my partner craves the sun in January. Madeira is calling him so we decide on a Belgium-Portugal combo.

Our flight to Madeira includes a stop in Porto, a city in northern Portugal famous not for madeira, but for port. It is here that we first discover the heavenly custard tart that goes by the name pastel de nata.

On a peaceful Porto portal, in a colourless but cute café offering only a couple of tables and a long counter, encased in a small glass display alongside the omnipresent Portuguese Super Bock beer tap, appeared a modest assortment of pastries. Indeed at this moment, we succumbed to our mutual love of all things custard. The beer was beer, but the custard tarts verged on perfection: not too sweet, a light and crispy shell, subtle scents of cinnamon and cardamom - three or four bites of pure bliss. To our delight pasteis de nata were as popular and as exquisite on Madeira as in Porto.

Two years later we made a second trip to Porto to walk 250 kilometres of the lesserknown Portuguese Camino. (Many people don’t realize there many Caminos, or paths, to Santiago de Compestela in Spain, the most famous being the Camino Frances from Fr ance to Santiago.) Our route took us through the most picturesque Portuguese countryside and it was rare to find even the smallest of villages that did not serve pasteis de nata. This sublime snack, coupled with a poignant Portuguese espresso, fueled many a mile of our journey.

We have just returned from our third embrace with Portugal, which we now refer to as the land of the perfect snack. En route we paused in Barcelona to visit my daughter, Amy, and her partner Andy. Not surprisingly, in the city of tapas, we soon found ourselves

Seeking Beervana with Lara Lewis

Adventures at the Haines Beer Fest W

e got the stern border guard at Haines customs this year.

No, we’re not bringing any firearms, plants or suitcases full of money, but I do have six beer entries for the homebrew competition.

“The what? The who? How big are them beers?”

He didn’t get it.

Nobody warned him that several hundred thirsty Canadians would soon be disturbing the peace at the 21st annual Great Alaskan Craft Beer and Home Brew Festival, May 24-25.

Friday the 24th was the homebrew competition; judging started at 9 a.m.

Eight different beers were in the first round — all stouts. After an hour of judging I had consumed less than 8 ounces of beer but was pleasantly glowing — possibly because four of the stouts were Russian Imperial style, way heftier than any sensible breakfast beer.

Happily, The standout stout that went on to win Best of Show was an entry from Whitehorse. Rachel Finn and Michael Kulachkosky, the former writers of What’s Up’s Beer Cache column, reigned supreme among 115 entries. Their necks were a little distorted from all the medals they received.

The handmade medals were actual beer bottles melted in a kiln and adorned with a decal and ribbon to make them wearable — for short stints. The winners announcement was heard by only a smattering of people who ventured away from the beer taps on Saturday. I saw a lot of confused faces on people who had no idea what was going on.

The value-seekers barely let their focus drift away from maximizing beer consumption in the face of time constraints, line-ups and distractions.

Among the distractions were the sledgehammer bell-ringing strongman event; the random guy

in dreadlocks, micro-gold lamé shorts and roller skates with neon green wheels; and, of course the usual pressing bladder.

Luckily, the sun was shining and the vibe was positive.

I took in the beer-pairing dinner again this year. Collette, the MC, took many jabs at Canadians.

Apparently we don’t need real birth control because our personalities do that job.

Total burn.

Dr. Fermento, a.k.a. James Roberts, was the guest speaker.

He is a bona fide beer writer whose pet peeve is being asked to name a favourite beer.

“Beer is like sex or pizza,” he says. “It’s situational.”

I agree. Sometimes you want the meat-lovers; sometimes the missionary position is just fine.

The beer-pairing dinner didn’t stack up to last year’s. The chef himself apologized that he had never cooked for 400 people before. The smelt wrapped in shoe-

string potatoes (a riff on fish and chips) was meh and the dessert was burnt. The beef tenderloin with rhubarb sauce and parsnip puree partially redeemed the night.

One of the standout beers was Haines Brewing’s Black Fang, an Imperial Stout, which almost made me forget about the accompanying charred rice pudding.

Clever organizers realized that if they kept the beer flowing the backlash would be minimal.

There was certainly no shortage.

I

t’s only recently that most people have forgotten how to forage for food.

For thousands of years, First Nations communities across Canada lived on food provided by nature. Berries, barks, plants, flowers and herbs were cyclically harvested for food and medicine.

Colonization changed the relationship between people, the land, and wild foods but a forager’s life is still possible.

A friend of mine lived in the bush near the banks of the Madawaska River in Ontario. For 10 years he lived on foraged foods and his small experimental forest garden. He learned his foraging skills from aboriginal elders worldwide.

I was amazed by his achievement, even though this was the way of life for most of human history.

Foraging is making a comeback

as Yukoners expand their ritual of autumn berry picking to investigate the year-round world of edible plants and medicines.

Miche Genest, chef, columnist and author of The Boreal Gourmet: Adventures in Northern Cooking, invited me to join her on a foraging walk in Whitehorse in mid-May to show me the early, the over-wintered, and the new growth in the edible plant world.

We started at Teegatha-oh-

zheh Park at the top of Main Street, walked the steep paths up the clay cliffs, explored the plateau east of the airfield, and came back down again via the Black St. stairs.

Genest identified 14 varieties of edibles, literally steps from downtown. And we had the delight of seeing the first crocuses of the season, including the freethinking pink ones up on the ridge.

Among the edible plants were

We anticipated the coming of Lamb’s Quarters and Plantain, but didn’t spy any yet. Among the mouth-watering uses Genest suggested for all of the wild edibles were syrups, salads, reductions, vinegars, relishes, marinades, garnishes, jellies, compotes, and teas. In the case of juniper, consider laying cut branches over a low fish-smoking fire. Drying berries and herbs is another option.

And making a smudge from sage is a time-honoured tradition.

When you start foraging for these and other species, keep in mind these thoughts from Genest: It is always necessary to identify any plant before you eat it – you want to know what it is before you put it into your mouth or the mouths of babes. When you are new to a wild edible, consume in small quantities. This way you can see if you have any allergic reactions.

Part of the joy of foraging is fostering and nurturing your respect for nature. For the sake of animals, the plant itself, and other foragers, only harvest five

percent or less from any one bush, tree or plant at one time. Be sure to thoroughly wash your harvest, especially in areas where dogs and other animals roam free.

And while pickings seem slim in the early (and late onset) spring, I learned that even over-wintered red currants have edible value.

We picked a few freeze-dried berries and ate them. I thought they tasted like moose and we agreed they would make a nice accompaniment to that game meat. And while a tea made with over-wintered red currants and rosehips won’t have the same high nutritional value — they are packed with vitamin C just after ripening — it would still be tasty.

T

he peas were up before we finished planting the garden this year.

We like to plant most of our seeds as soon as we can work our soil. Because we have a sandy loam it tends to dry out and warm up quickly. This allows us to plant earlier as well.

When I first started to garden in the Yukon I waited until the May long weekend to plant — same as I did while living on the prairies.

But I noticed some years the garden could be worked as early as the last week of April.

I started to plant seeds earlier whose packages said “plant as soon as the soil can be worked.”

This wasn’t just root crops like carrots and beets, but also spinach, lettuce and Swiss chard.

It made sense to let the garden use all the time it could to produce crops; our season is short enough as it is and we can have frost any month of the year and

If a plant can handle the early frosts why not let it, especially if it means the difference between having a harvest and losing the crop to a late frost.

Peas are a seed that like to germinate somewhere close to 0°C, but a late frost will turn their pods to mush.

So these are the first to go into our garden.

This spring has been the coldest I have seen since moving North. So as soon as possible, the pea seeds were planted; we even got the beets and Swiss chard in.

But then the weather turned cold again and when I wanted to plant the lettuce and carrots, the wind gusts were so high I would have been sending the seeds to my neighbors yard.

This was followed by more snow.

When the weather finally

warmed up and the wind died down it was much later in the season than usual for planting. But out we went anyways – the seeds won’t grow in the packages.

With the sun out and very little wind it feels almost like summer, almost.

The soil was still very cold and I like to garden barefoot.

But by dressing for the weather and working together, Allan and I were able to get a lot done.

Hopefully the rest of the garden will soon be growing along side the peas.

Titan Games is home base for the gamer culture in Whitehorse. The store also hosts Dungeons and Dragons and Warhammer games, as well as Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments.

F

or Whitehorse gamers, the Friday night Magic card tournament at Titan Gaming & Collectibles is an institution, a chance to meet and test their skills against the best in the city for a modest store credit.

Think old-timers hockey, but for the guys from your former high school’s AV club.

“The people who come out to these events are pretty social,” says Shawn Underhill, Titan’s coowner. “It’s not like they are sitting home alone in their mom’s basement.”

Titan does, however, have several qualities of mom’s basement.

Located in a lower level of the Hougen Centre on Main Street, Titan has the most comics, graphic novels and collectables in northern Canada; a dimly lit computer room; and more images of dragons and swords than a prog-rock album cover.

It also smells faintly of pizza pops, owing to an onsite kitchen, which boasts an impressive selection of fried goods.

“There’s nothing really like us,” says Underhill. “Even down south, I’ve never ran into a place as badass as we are.”

Titan is home base for fans of a number of card, role-playing and computer games but nothing holds sway over the local gamer’s imagination like Magic cards.

Spending Friday nights at Titan could lead to fame and fortune The game, officially titled “Magic: The Gathering,” was released in 1993, by American games publisher Wizards of the Coast. In the last two decades it has gained immense global popularity with an impressive aftermarket for collectable cards, and even a pro-tour, where professional Magic players can earn as much as $40,000 per tournament.

“It’s like chess to another level,” says Kincaid Murray, a

32-year-old, who’s been playing since 1998. “It’s about trying to figure out what your chances are and to analyze your opponent’s strategy. A good game of Magic is just like trying to put a puzzle together, and there’s a nearly unlimited number of strategies you can use.”

Frank Molund is the patient zero of the Whitehorse Magic scene. Twenty years ago he brought the rules home with him

while on holiday from the University of Victoria, spreading the game to a core group, including Underhill.

“At the time we didn’t know how big it would be,” he says.

In the early days it was just six guys playing Magic at the former Wizard’s Emporium. Soon they were competing in Anchorage, where in 1995 they took all four of the top spots in the regional championship.

That year the whole team got sick from a bad breakfast at Denny’s and was forced to drive the whole way to Whitehorse in a blizzard. That tournament is still a source of enormous pride for Underhill.

“We used to really kick ass on those Americans,” he says, grinning.

The Alaskans improved after importing a former U.S. military intelligence officer to act as the local coach and tournament judge.

Yukon gamers still play Outside. Titan will be sending a group of five down to Los Vegas to compete in June.

“The friends I made 20 years ago are the same ones I am going out and doing this with now,” says Underhill.

Many younger gamers continue to come to Magic through Titan’s in-house Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon tournaments.

“We try to groom the kids from Pokémon up to be good winners and good losers,” says Underhill.

“You want to have a good, positive community.”

Women often report harassment and pressure to prove their interest in comics to their male counterparts. That same mentality, when combined with the anonymity of online gaming, can be a threatening environment for female video gamers.

“I don’t play a lot of videogames partially because of that reason,” says Pumphrey. “I go and try to play and people don’t want to play with me — it’s really juvenile.”

Pumphrey says she feels comfortable at Titan — plus she’s good enough to keep most of the guys quiet.

“For the most part it’s a nice environment here and people are really friendly,” she says.

It’s not all Magic at Titan Games. The Friday night tournament is shared with a table of local Dungeons and Dragons gamers.

Pumphrey’s even started bringing her 19-year-old sister Maija along to the weekly tournaments.

“I think things are looking good for the future,” says Underhill. “I think we’ll be in a good place for sure, especially with the next waves of players coming in.”

Underhill hopes to be a part of the scene for many years to come.

“This is something that I love, so hopefully we’ll be at it for decades and decades,” he says. “Two decades so far, so I’ve got to keep it going.”

hen I got my Nintendo I didn’t think it would have any impact on children’s lives.

Twenty-three years later the computer age has brought some great feats, but it changed the way people entertain themselves.

According to the U.S Department of Statistics, the average American spends 2.7 hours a day watching TV. I hope that Canadians spend a little less but I doubt it.

Kids spend more of their time in front of a screen than they do riding bikes, playing ball or even hanging out in the park with a few friends.

Growing up in an isolated small town in northern Manitoba may have been my saving grace. With no cable TV – just a couple channels that we didn’t want to watch anyway – we were forced to find

With a bunch of broken down swings and some partially rotten playground fixtures we could go on an adventure to anywhere imaginable. Girls and boys would play together; teenagers would try to get dates with others on babysitting duty; and socialization was part of everyday life — not a website you go to.

Today, my girls text their friends to chat all day; we used to pick up a phone and make arrangements to go out. They go on Facebook to tell everyone what they are doing; we would do something and not care if everyone knew.

With so many facilities at our fingertips I find it disappointing to drive down the street and see the empty parks and soccer fields without children running around.

Even house decks seem to be empty.

The challenge today is getting everyone out.

Survivor, The Voice, X-Factor

— it is easy to watch one of these “must see TV shows” after a long workday. And parents put their kids in front of the TV to make sure they are entertained. Our oldest wore out three VHS tapes because she liked a particular movie so much.

But getting out is a great way to let go of the day’s problems and just wind down.

We like to go sit on the side of the Hidden Lakes for a bit and listen to the calls of the loons – that is really more relaxing than watching Survivor. We’ll also wander down to Miles Canyon and listen to the water race past.

We should all take advantage of this great place because some day when you turn off the TV, you may realize it is all gone.
