I

kept tabs on that pistachio nut for half an hour. It didn’t move.

Earlier in the evening it had been poured, along with hundreds of its brothers and sisters, into a cute ceramic bowl and placed in a prominent location on the hors d’oeuvres table at a dinner party.

I was sitting at the table, nibbling — as is my style.

My experience with pistachio nuts at events like this has been remarkably consistent. Generally people begin slowly picking at the bowl of nuts and tossing the resulting shells into an adjacent receptacle.

But before long a bona fide pistachio addict will arrive on the scene. Suddenly shells are flying every-which-way as the nut-junkie tunes out the surrounding din and focuses on his fix. Those who had previously been eating at a gentlemanly pace are now forced to increase their consumption in order to keep up with the jonesing pistachio-head.

And in heartbeat a full bowl of nuts dwindles down to almost nothing.

Such was the case on this particular night.

In fact they were all eaten, except for one soldier.

Though this is the first time I noticed such a phenomenon with pistachios, I have seen this effect many times before. Pizza, in particular, seems to inspire such behaviour on a regular basis.

There have been dozens of occasions when I have ordered pizza with a group of famished people,

“What is one to make of such an oddity?” and upon its arrival the pizza is devoured like a caribou carcass under a wolf pack. But then something strange happens: the feeding frenzy grinds to a halt with precisely one piece of pizza left in the box.

What is one to make of such an oddity?

One possibility is that on each of these occasions all present pizza-eaters just happen to find themselves pleasantly full at exactly the same moment. But given the number of times I have witnessed such a scenario, this

would strike me as a fantastic coincidence.

More likely, “the pistachio effect” reveals something about us as human beings.

What I think it reveals is the degree to which we are willing to let societal pressures regarding politeness dictate our behaviour and prevent us from making rational, utilitarian decisions.

Everyone wants that last piece of pizza, and everyone knows it. And yet there it sits and grows cold — diminishing the overall utility of the final slice — as the hungry hoards cast salivating half-glances in its direction when they think no one is looking.

Why do we engage is such preposterous social self-effacement when it clearly does nobody any good at all?

This was the question that vexed me as I stared at that final pistachio. Then, in a moment of Nietzschean will-to-power I snatched the last nut and ate it all to myself. I felt no regret whatsoever.

And be warned: the next time I order pizza I’m planning on doing exactly the same thing.

Big Love for Tiny Houses

T

he Tiny House movement is happening around the world, including the Yukon.

Mount Lorne residents Laird Herbert and Kim Melton estimate there are at least six Tiny Houses in the Yukon. And by tiny, they don’t just mean small.

While small is a matter of perspective, a Tiny House has come to be a kind of defined smallness.

Herbert says Tiny Houses typically fit on a trailer that can be pulled by a truck, are one storey and can have a loft.

The movement is partly fuelled by the desire to live simply and to live a lifestyle that is gentle on the environment. They’re also cheap to build.

Herbert has built three Tiny Houses, and he is teaching a workshop this weekend on design and construction tips for people who want to do it themselves.

When she first started designing her little place, she didn’t know there was a Tiny House movement.

She just happened to be tapped into the collective unconscious, and was inspired to design and build a home that would be mobile and small.

She did some of the work herself and hired skilled friends to do the parts she didn’t know how to do.

The result is a home that cost $15,000 in materials and $10,000 in labour to build. It is 18 feet long and eight feet wide. It’s an open concept space, with one bathroom and a sleeping area in the loft. She has a wood stove that keeps her toasty through the winter using

“The mobile part is handy for those of us who are looking for land,” she says. “And the notbeing-in-debt thing is a big one. It

helps keep down the clutter — it’s very quick to tidy up.”

Adjusting to such a small space wasn’t a big problem either.

“I liken it to living out of your backpack when you travel,” she says. “No matter how big your

backpack is, you fill it. When I’m travelling I’ve often thought, ‘Oh, I wish I had brought a smaller bag.’”

So, now she’s got her wish.

Except that there isn’t enough room to spread-eagle on the floor.

“I would like a space where I can really stretch out on the floor and roll around a bit,” she says.

“I purposefully built it big enough to put down my yoga mat and do

yoga, but I can’t do any poses that take me off the mat. Like doing twists on your back.”

The other problem is there isn’t much room for having people over.

“I’ve got a max capacity of three people hanging out for dinner.”

But still, the idea of life in a Tiny House is getting pretty big.

Laird Herbert has been dialed into Tiny House blogs and websites for a few years and has watched the movement grow.

“They’re everywhere, now,” he says. “It’s the chaos of the real estate market, the simplicity of being able to build it yourself and the impermanence of it — you don’t have to have land and you can take it wherever you go.”

His two-day workshop will share the tips and tricks he has learned about building Tiny Houses.

“We’ll be doing some basic carpentry but mostly day one is focusing on developing (attendees’) own designs, day two is into the more practical aspects of construction — and finally talking about the myth of how much money and time they really take,” Herbert says.

This is a momma and baby moose on the Atlin Road. On this trip we had seen seven moose, three of which were babies. This was also the trip where we needed to stop the vehicle as a momma and baby were running like mad across the highway. We started to carry on and a black bear came running out right after them. Didn’t think to pull out the camera then - there was a long quiet pause as we all processed the event.

he most common question from visitors is the one I was asked by a lady from Alabama this afternoon. I was on my way home from an interview at Berton House and thought I might give them a hand – they had happened along Robert Service’s Cabin while the Parks’ guide wasn’t there. I was explaining some of the history when she asked me that common question.

“What do you do here in the winter? How do you keep warm?”

Since it was 29°C at my house, and certain to climb past 30°C as the sun moved to the western part of the sky, this seemed a silly question, but I responded politely.

All the while, I was thinking back to the previous week, when the National Post had contacted the Klondike Sun in search of a photo of people coping with our unaccustomed heat wave — as if we were all likely to melt like the wicked witch in Oz when Dorothy douses her with a bucket of water.

The photo editor’s questions were the inverse of the lady’s, but showed very little knowledge of

Dawson City in June.

He was disappointed that I would not be able to send him photos of hordes of people sunning on a riverbank beach or swimming in the Yukon River.

People do splash around in the shallows and back eddies where the water is still enough that the sun warms it, but not for very long.

I went out and did my best over a couple of afternoons, trying to get a combination of elements that would show both people and the town.

“Hi,” I said. “The folks in Toronto have realized that this is one of the hottest places in Canada today, and the National Post has asked me to get pictures of some people beating the heat.”

Folks wanted to know what the National Post was and whether they’d sent me all the way out here to cover this story. Learning that I live here they wanted to know why, and whether I stuck it out through the winter (that old question). Apparently some of them thought I was very brave.

People cope in a lot of ways.

Just now I’m sitting in my summertime living room on our nicely shaded deck. The Post chose to use the picture of two tourists having an ice cream outside the Klondike Creamery. I liked the shot of folks listening to Dwayne Kelly busking on his piano beside the Front Street gazebo, or the one of the group having a picnic in the nicely shaded shelter, created during the Take Back the Waterfront project.

Three young people were having a game of cards on the cool grass, while another young woman was flaked out beside her bicycle under a tree.

In the summer we try to enjoy the heat while we can, and hope for just enough rain to cut the forest fire risk and keep down the dust.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

Sharing Traditional Art with Europeans

O

n May 30 Dennis and I left a big flood behind in Ross River, and landed in Germany where many cities, towns and villages were also flooding.

We are here on our annual trip to promote tourism, culture, and Yukon artists, including Dennis’ artwork. It’s something we volunteer to do – we are promoting the Yukon from our hearts.

Some of the cities where we planned our promotion tour are in the flooding zone, so we decided to concentrate on the Berlin area. We are presenting Healing Through Art workshops, artist talks and seminars. We are also promoting the Adaka Cultural Festival – both Dennis and I have been involved with the festival the last two years – from being involved with the gallery, to presenting artwork, to performing music with our band Dena Zagi.

Using a dremel tool and some hand tools, Dennis teaches ant-

ler carving, for example, how to make pendants, rings, and earrings.

His workshops include an artist’s talk, storytelling and an exchange of knowledge with the participants.

We come to Germany almost every year, and the people we meet become friends, and the circle is getting bigger and bigger every time we visit.

People are very excited to meet us and especially because Dennis is a First Nation artist.

We advertised through wordof-mouth and print media that we would be holding carving workshops, which includes artists’ talks and story telling. Last weekend we had three participants, and three more interested people came just to watch and to hear our life-stor-

Two of the participants traveled one hour to attend, and one made the three-hour trip from south of Vogtland on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Earlier this year, this young man had demonstrated in the Idle No More move-

ment in Berlin. There he met some of our friends who told him that we would be in Germany for a promotional trip this summer.

He contacted us through email and we made arrangements to meet. One of his passions is dancing in pow-wows and he feels

very connected to native people and Mother Earth.

We had a very nice coming together with all participants of the workshop. And we also shared our songs with them. Dennis and I formed the band Dena Zagi, and the songs are performed in the Kaska language. More people are asking for workshops now.

Our time in Germany also included a chance to meet with key people for future projects and to promote other businesses. Two weeks ago we met with the Mayor of Ludwigsfelde to talk about Yukon projects to bring to Germany, and yesterday we met with a society to discuss the idea of a solo art exhibition in 2014 for my carving and painting.

We still have until the middle of August to do some more promoting and to meet up with interesting people. We will be traveling to the Czech Republic and Poland as soon as the floods are down.

Skagway Club Shares Gardening Tips

Skagway garden conference features lectures, workshops, and tours July 19th to 21st

hether you’re in the Yukon, Alaska, or Arizona, your ground is the foundation of gardening, and that is the focus of the keynote event at a conference taking place in Skagway this month. Typically held in Juneau, the bi-annual Southeast Alaska Garden Conference will be held in Skagway for the first time, July 19 to 21.

The drive to Skagway offers Yukoners the opportunity to participate in a variety of workshops including soil analysis and composting; growing fruits and berries; northern weed control; and landscape planning.

The conference, hosted by the Skagway Garden Club, also features 10 speakers discussing topics ranging from gardening for northern pollinators to cooking with local edibles.

chair, Charlotte Jewell, is particularly pleased to be able to present Anchorage master gardener and soil expert Jeff Lowenfels.

“The thing that’s most exciting to me is the keynote speaker,” Jewell says.

“This is a famous northern gardener, who’s been working in the north for probably 40 years - I’ve known about him for 35 years who speaks all over the United States, yet he’s never spoken in Skagway, the Garden City of Alaska. His book, ‘Teaming with Microbes’, has been reviewed as one of the most important garden book in the last 25 years. He’s a very dynamic and captivating speaker.”

Lowenfels’ garden column in the Anchorage Daily News is the longest running garden column in the United States. He is the former president of the Garden Writers of America, a Garden Writer’s

Fellow and is founder of Plant A Row for The Hungry, a national program that encourages gardeners to plant one row in their gardens dedicated to feed the hungry.

Lowenfels co-authored the book, “Teaming with Microbes, The Organic Gardener’s Guide to the Soil Food Web,” which won the Garden Writers of America Gold Award.

At the garden conference, Lowenfels’ lecture is based on information from this book and will answer the why’s and how’s of organic gardening.

“It’ll give Yukoners insight into developing the best possible soils from their gardens,” Jewell says.

“Two of our speakers are from Anchorage, where the climate is very similar to the Yukon. Skagway’s climate is much more mild than Anchorage.

The Inside Scoop on Speed Control

S

peed Control is developing a reputation as the hardest working band in Whitehorse.

After spending much of the winter performing multiple shows per day, the post-hardcore band has started another tour.

These guys have recently quit their jobs – they are committed to making a living in playing their music, a combination of pop punk, math rock and high-energy rock’n’roll.

They’re also my friends and occasional collaborators, so consider this story the inside scoop.

Graeme Peters, the band’s guitarist, vocalist and 15-year touring veteran, lists the tour’s itinerary.

“We’re playing Whistler Street Festival, Smithers Summer Music Festival, and one in Mission, they do an outdoor music series, playing in this big amphitheatre so that will be great,” Graeme says. “And then we’ve got club shows. And that’s just July.

“In August, we fly out to Ontario and we do a two week residency at the Stratford Summer Music Festival and then we whip

out home to the west coast and do a 10 day tour up from Vancouver through Alberta and back home.”

They’ll also host rock camps, teaching kids of all experience levels how to play rock ‘n’ roll.

“The rock camps are a miniature version of Jack Black’s School of Rock, but awesomer, because there’s three of us,” Graeme says. “We teach them instruments throughout the week or three days, however long we’re there. And we have a big rock concert at the end.”

It’s a grueling schedule and as a result, the band members have no time for the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.

Jody Peters, Graeme’s younger brother and the band’s high jumping bassist, explains: “We don’t really ascribe to it too much. For teaching rock camps we have to be up so early, at the latest 10 o’clock. We sometimes do two school shows a day and then a club show at night, there’s no way you can stay out and party, then repeat that schedule three shows a day. We’d be wrecked in a week.”

Instead, the trio fills their time

off with bacon and exercise. Jody and drummer Ian March began bodybuilding and spread it to Graeme.

“He was tired of being the fat one in the band,” Jody says of his brother.

Gentle ribbing aside, Jody has no problems riding in cramped vans for weeks on end with his brother.

“We’ve discovered that I’m the only one who works well with Graeme, because I know when not to talk, and when to go to the gym and work out,” says Jody. “It’s easy.

“We’ve had disagreements, but it’s usually about where to eat.

We’re a pretty easy-going band.

And presenters like that.”

Ian March is the band’s heartthrob. After their school performances, girls crowd around the tall drummer for autographs and photos.

He’s also the newest member of the band, having replaced original drummer Spencer Cole a few years ago.

He picked up the band’s speed and odd time signatures quickly.

“The more you listen to it, the more you play it, the easier it becomes, right?” Spencer says.

“I’ve always been a fan, I idolized Graeme as a drummer in Friend Called Five. It’s a lot of fun now.”

Their dedication to music and their work with kids have already paid off. Yamaha Canada provides the band with instruments and a sound system. They also sponsors the rock camps — working with local music stores to provide instruments, which students can buy at discounted prices.

Locally, Whitehorse Motors have provided a Ford Flex for them to travel in comfort, and Tait Trailers have given them a deal on an equipment trailer.

A birthday letter

We love you, we really do.

In honour of your special day, a bunch of us got together and started talking about what we really like about you. I know you’re still a little sensitive about Gitmo, and all that trouble with Wall Street, but everyone’s practically forgotten that.

Turns out all anyone really cares about is Portland, anyway.

We just love those bike lanes and food carts. You make it look so easy.

And New York City too, I suppose we wouldn’t want it to wash away in the Hudson River. Everyone just hearts NYC and now that Broadway has Doogie Howser as its new mascot, we heart it even more.

We wouldn’t want the In-N-Out burger to be washed away either.

To b e h o n est, I have never dined at this popular west coast burger chain, so I had to do a little online research.

Celebrate the Fourth of July with our American Neighbours

Haines and Skagway both offer a full schedule of festivities

anada Day has come and gone. The flag has been praised, the beer has been drunk, and you are swept up in patriotic fervour. You could wait another year to celebrate the birth of a North American democracy, or you could find your way to our Alaskan neighbours a mere three days later and see how the other half celebrates.

You can also try Grito de Dolores, the Mexican independence day on September 16 if you’re looking for the trifecta.

“It’s always nice to tie in with Canada Day,” says Tanya Carlson, Haines’s director of tourism. “The Canadian turnout varies from year to year though, depending on the day of the week July 4 falls on.”

The old cliché (the phrase “old cliché” is itself an old cliché) is that the American and Canadian holidays are celebrated in ways that reflect their origins. Like most clichés, there is a kernel of truth to this. We gained independence as a matter of parliamentary procedure. The Americans declared their independence. It only makes sense that the celebrations stemming from the creation of our respective countries reflects this difference.

The Fourth of July is about a moment in time, and carries a nostalgia for the past. Carlson has noted that when visitors come to Haines, they are often looking for a particular vision of what the Fourth looks like.

“What I have found is, because we’re a small town, people that

visit enjoy the experience of a small-town atmosphere for the Fourth of July,” she says. “It kind of makes me think back to the old ‘50s TV shows, everybody out in a small community and having cheesecake and root beer floats and watching fireworks.”

Some of the Haines events that stand out are the Mud Volleyball tournament (prepare to get dirty), and the Nail and Spike Pounding Contest. There is also more traditional Fourth of July fare.

This fare includes a parade through downtown and a pieeating contest (you had me at pie). Also, if you’ve ever wondered what would happen if firefighters stopped saving lives and started fighting each other with hoses (and really, who hasn’t) the Haines firefighters will be putting on a hose fight.

This is not traditional, but we owe it to ourselves to make it so.

If you’d like to party Americanstyle but would

rather not go so far, the Skagway Chamber of Commerce is also organizing festivities.

As far as Skagway standouts, there is a 5-kilometre costume run, which promises to be at least as interesting for bystanders as participants.

Bluegrass From the Heart

The Gibson Brothers play the Atlin Arts and Music Festival

eal music for real people, that’s the Gibson Brothers’ philosophy.

“You have to believe what you’re singing about,” says guitarist/ vocalist Leigh Gibson, who plays with his brother Eric. “I hope that people, when they listen to us, even if they don’t love what we’re doing, they think we’re being true to ourselves and are real.”

Hailing from New York, the Gibson Brothers made the journey North last month, to play the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival in Whitehorse, and will be returning in to play Atlin Arts and Music Festival, July 12-14.

The Atlin performance will mark the last Canadian date of their tour for their eleventh and latest album, They Called It Music.

It is their seventh release in a row to reach the top of the prestigious Bluegrass Unlimited’s Top Album chart. Gibson finds this encouraging and gratifying, even as he acknowledges that his band’s sound may not resonate with all listeners.

“We’re a bluegrass band that writes original material – in a nutshell, we’re a brother duet, most all our vocals are in a duet style,” he says.

Many of their songs are based on their upbringing on a New York dairy farm.

“A lot of the themes are similar themes that you might hear in southern Appalachian mountains but they’re true to us because of where we grew up and how we grew up,” he says. “You’re not going to necessarily hear a lot of standard bluegrass material coming from the stage when we’re performing. It might take a little longer to get into what we’re doing if you don’t know any of the songs, but we find as we make fans, we make them and keep them.”

Gibson also notes that some of his favourite audiences and fans are found in the smaller communities.

“What I find about the people from that area is that they’re so very giving of themselves, so as a traveler or a stranger you’re welcomed in and shown things, they’re so willing to share the experience of the North with you,” he says of his recent experience at the Kluane Bluegrass Festival.

“We’ll play in the larger cities and it’s nice to see that, but it’s also nice to see the other choice, people making the choice to live a quieter type of life and the experiences that come with that, I think there’s more a sense of community because you’re dependant on one another a little more when there’s fewer of you... people find a way to get along better, or at least be involved in each other’s lives a bit more in the smaller communities.”

Take It in Stride with Ben Yu Schott

Running to your Own Beat I used to need music — a strong beat, pick-me-up songs — just to finish a run. It helped push away the difficulty of learning to jog, the challenge of a hard race, and the boredom.

In Grade 9 we read an essay called “Blasting Up Music to Drown Out Reality.” The essay argued that we are missing out on what is going on around us when we blast our music and tune out. That essay’s message bubbled to the surface again with regard to my running.

Rather than truly experiencing the lungs breathing, the body moving, the heart pumping, the gorgeous Yukon scenery, and, sometimes, the self imposed pain and suffering, I used to blast a loud song on my iPod. My catalyst for change was pushing my daughter in a Chariot. I wanted to make sure I could always hear her.

We would chat back and forth during the run about what she could see of the world moving by. Gradually, I noticed that I didn’t need the music, and I enjoyed the run more without it. I discovered often a run could offer greater insight when I was truly “in it.”

There are also practical reasons to avoid music while trail running

If you haven’t tried running without music, give it a try – you may find there is a lot going on around you and within you that you don’t want to miss. in the Yukon. Better that you hear a bear, animal, another runner, ATV or mountain biker before you crash into them or they you.

In a recent 8-kilometre race, I skipped the iPod completely and I didn’t miss it. My inner dialogue kept me company as I raced

against the clock and the other runners. I plan to do my next half marathon music-free too.

It feels more satisfying to go all

out now, without my musical crutch.

Sometimes music plays without my iPod. A song will flitter in and out of my consciousness. The theme song to Never Ending Story flittered in once when I had to do a workout called Never Ending Minutes. Classified’s “Inner Ninja” has been a regular in my head lately.

Some runners have never run with music, some do sometimes, and some can’t run without it.

I’m still inclined to carry a few podcasts on my iPod, just in case. But If you haven’t tried running without music, why not give it a try? You may find there is a lot going on around you and within you that you don’t want to miss.

A Front-Row Seat into the Lives of Musicians

Atlin Arts and Music Festival features films telling the stories behind the music

E

ach summer the population of Atlin, B.C. swells from its normal 400 to 2,500, as the Atlin Arts and Music Festival swings into gear for a weekend in midJuly. This year, the festival’s tenth anniversary, will be no exception.

The Yukon Film Society has scheduled free showings of music and arts-oriented films at the town’s historic Globe Theatre as an integral part of the festival.

An eclectic mix of films has been assembled for the occasion — from a long out-of-circulation documentary on music legend Stompin’ Tom Connors, to an Oscar-winning documentary about an obscure ‘70s folk singer who became an idol in South Africa, to an inspired film about coming of age in a small town in the Northwest Territories.

Kicking off the screenings will be Across This Land With Stompin’ Tom Connors. Filmed in 1973 at Toronto’s famous Horseshoe Tavern and unavailable for many years, it’s a rousing tribute to the singer’s uniqueness, highlighting several nights’ performances of classics like “Bud The Spud,” “Sudbury Saturday Night” and “The Hockey Song.”

Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me is a new documentary, about a Memphis-based band who never achieved musical prominence, but whose three albums have been highly critically acclaimed.

“Big Star are the originators of power-pop music,” says Andy Connors of the Yukon Film Society. “It’s really cleanly-produced, guitardriven rock and roll, with lots of hooks, a sort of shimmering guitar, with lots of vocal harmonies, and just great songwriting. They were a band that was destined for success in ’73, when their first record came out… but for some reason, the record sales just never happened for them, then they just kind of imploded in the late ‘70s.”

Contemporary bands such as REM and Wilco have acknowledged Big Star as major influences on their work.

Searching For Sugar Man chronicles the amazing story of Sixto Rodriguez, a Detroit folk singer who also had a short-lived recording career in the early ‘70s that never really took off. Unbeknownst to him, his music flourished in South Africa, where his songs became anthems for the anti-apart-

The film traces the recent efforts of two fans to discover his whereabouts, despite rumours of his suicide.

Now, his career has been revived, and the film about him went

on to win the Best Feature Documentary prize at this year’s Academy Awards.

Charles Bradley: Soul Of America documents the story of another Detroit-area musician, now in his early seventies, who earned

a sporadic living doing impersonations of James Brown’s sizzling act.

His original material later revived Bradley’s career.

of the creators of the TV show Pee Wee’s Playhouse. The film follows the highs and lows of his career.

Fort Smith, NWT writer Richard Van Camp will be accompanying the film adaptation of his first novel, The Lesser Blessed in Atlin.

The film, directed by Anita Doiron, tells the story of Larry Sole, a young high school student in the NWT with some serious issues to deal with. He befriends Johnny Beck, a recent arrival from Hay River, who is idolized by male and female students alike.

“I think Kiowa Gordon from Twilight did a beautiful job with Johnny”, says Van Camp. “I can’t take my eyes off any of these actors. I’m really proud of everyone’s performances; there’s no weak link in any of them.”

When Johnny takes up with Juliet Hope, (Chloe Rose from Degrassi: The Next Generation) Larry and Johnny’s friendship becomes complicated because Larry has had a long-standing crush on Juliet.

Joel Evans, a recent high school graduate from Fort Smith who has no previous acting experience, plays Larry.

Van Camp says Evans was a fortuitous discovery.

“He didn’t even know we were auditioning for a major motion picture, and Anita Dorion and the casting agent were in Fort Smith,” Van Camp says. “We’d just finished auditioning five communities in six days, 120 kids, and just when they thought all was lost, he came around the corner, and they said ‘Get him!’ They just could tell that he just lit up the room… He’s our finest accomplishment, out of the whole operation.”

Van Camp sums up the film’s impact for him: “It’s beautifully shot and perfectly cast. The soundtrack is gorgeous; we’re just so proud of it, and we want the world to see it properly.”

e pulled into Frenchman Lake campground late at night to find it full. The day was like every other Friday, too busy to take care of camping preparations. We decided to move on to Nanatuk and luckily found the last spot on the water still open. I was behind the rest of the camping pack because I assumed most of the gear was in the camper, which it wasn’t.

The next morning we woke the girls up early to go fishing, and they were not very pleased to be dragged out of bed. They got tired of “wasting” time pretty quickly.

It was our first time on Frenchman Lake with our new boat and I can understand Hayley (eleven) and Janessa’s (nine) impatience; as a new boat operator and inexperienced lake fisherman it was difficult. I pulled in and out of bays, trolled what looked like deep water, but 100 yards away it was five feet deep and my rod would bounce like there was a fish.

We caught lots of reed beds that morning. It was comical for the girls to watch me stumble

with the setup, but that got old as the morning went on.

Heather and I explored more bays after the girls went in for a bit, and we caught the odd fish.

We found pike congregated in a spot about 8 feet deep, and you could see them lying on the bottom. I was so excited to finally find a spot with fish, I fell all over the boat in a rush to get the rod and throw a cast.

After a few hours of playing in the bay we went back for a late lunch and told the girls of our find.

Janessa has never been one to get excited about fishing, but wanted to come see fish chase the lures.

When we returned Janessa put on her polarized sunglasses and could see them lying around. She was so excited — “there’s one, and another over there.”

Turns out we weren’t wasting her time anymore. We threw a few casts and Janessa could see the pike following our hooks. She borrowed Heather’s new mothers’ day/birthday present — it was the first expensive rod we had ever bought.

On Janessa’s first cast there was a little fish following her hook, she was so excited she reeled the hook in too fast. The next cast was similar to the first; excitement got the better of her again.

On the third cast she slowed down and gave the odd jerk to tease the fish. It hit her hook and then she reeled as fast as she could. By the time we could tell her to slow down, it was too late. She had her fish in the boat and the rod tip was broken.

There was so excitement that she caught the fish we didn’t notice the tip for a few minutes.

Turns out that it broke just below the part where it could have been salvaged.

Heather got a new rod out of the deal and Janessa caught her first fish.

The weekend was enjoyed by all, even the black bear that visited in the night to lick the tables clean.
