erhaps Whitehorse’s most stately landmark is the S.S. Klondike, perched on the shore of the Yukon River. But for sheer bizarreness you can’t beat my favourite capital city attraction — on the corner of 4th and Strickland, in front of the blue and yellow Workers Compensation Board (WCB) building.

I am speaking of the large digital screen that keeps a running tally of injured Yukon workers.

As I write, the count is 786.

As you read, I bet the clock has notched 800.

Now, along with the migration of the birds and the colour of the leaves, Yukoners can measure the progression of a year by the everincreasing number of workplace accidents.

Weird, right?

I like to picture a well-intentioned focus group latching onto the notion of an injury-o-rama scoreboard.

Someone must have taken the talking stick and made an argument that went something like this: “By using a large digital board

to constantly update the citizens of Whitehorse re: the quantity of their injured compatriots we will provide them with a constant reminder to remain vigilant at work.”

I’m sure the idea looked great on paper. Hell, it might even work.

But my confession is that I get a twinge of excitement every time I notice that the number on the big board has changed. Despite my humanist education I can’t help rooting for the number to get bigger.

Yikes, right?

To quickly clarify — though I have never been on workers compensation I did once break my arm on the way to work. With the exception of the gifted casseroles and the prescription opiates — which were kind of fun — the whole thing was awful.

So I know the misery of being laid up and unable to work.

More recently, a certain Notre Dame fan that I call a friend was a passenger in a head-on collision as he made his way to work at a tungsten mine in western NWT. This time I was a first-hand wit-

ness to the pain and soul-searching befuddlement of a man on workers comp.

It wasn’t pretty.

I know that each of the 786 people represented on the board has had an experience that correlates closely to the miserable ones I’ve noted above, and yet I still enjoy watching big numbers get even bigger on the old WCB injury-meter.

I could blame society for my condition (something about being desensitized by digital culture) or I could conclude that I’m a despicable person (as some of you might), but hopefully the truth lies elsewhere.

Despite its sheer oddness, the WCB board has worked its way into my heart; it has become part of my Whitehorse. And in the same way that I take comfort in the consistency of the changing seasons, there is something reassuring about watching the digits rise throughout the year and reset each January.

For me, the predictable tide of workplace injuries is a sign that time is progressing as it should.

The Beauty of Biodiesel

In the early days of experimentation, they warmed up their vehicle on a winter day and drove around town on errands. While on the road, the cold temperatures chilled the fuel lines down, the biodiesel gelled and wouldn’t ignite.

Frog Mountain Music Festival features plenty to keep kids busy on July 27

his Saturday kids hanging out at the music festival just north of Whitehorse will probably go from having crazy amounts of fun, to being konked out, to falling asleep.

The little angels will likely miss the “I’m bored” stage of the day, and parents will be able to tag-team their way through the day.

Bands will be performing from 11 a.m. on July 27 through to 1 a.m. that night, so in addition to bringing camping gear and sustenance, parents might want to consider bringing a babysitter for the rock ‘n’ roll portion of the evening.

This weekend marks the Frog Mountain Music Festival’s third annual event, and will feature a diverse program of activities to tire out the youngsters.

Lara-Rae Grant, president of the non-profit society, says the goal is to create a festival that the whole family will enjoy.

“It’s the sense of community, of being able to bring local bands together and have a place to camp

close to town,” Grant says. “We have a lot of families that come out — it’s a real home festival.”

To help the parents enjoy it, the festival has organized kids’ activities that include a bouncy castle, face painting, a scavenger hunt with an obstacle course component, and prizes. Whitehorse artist Emma Barr will have a painting station set up for kids, too.

Grant says kids should head for the tent that looks like a cupcake. That’s where their action takes place, and it’s not too far from the beer garden and the music.

“They’ll be in the hub of it all,” Grant says.

Sizzling Meat the Vegans’ debut album is a medium rare combo of punk, heavy rock and reggae

V

egetarians beware.

Whitehorse’s grooverocking quartet Meat the Vegans has just released their first album, 100% Fat. With a raw punk-inspired sound and graphic artwork to match, it is definitely not Morrissey approved.

Consisting of vocalist/guitarist Mike Anderson, guitarist Simon Charles, bassist/vegetarian Alex MacKay and drummer Steve Jacobs, Meat the Vegans plays a combination of punk and heavy rock layered on top of danceable reggae.

They will be playing the Frog Mountain Music Festival on July 27.

The band started with Charles and Jacobs, who’ve played together for 10 years. Then MacKay joined, moving from a reggae sound with Rick Sward to grooveheavy bass lines.

“I was a hired gun,” he says.

“I played music a long time ago. I lived in Whitehorse for a long time and I hadn’t been too active. I wanted to get back into it… there were a lot of people who needed a bass player, I said yes to everybody, (and) eventually met these guys.

“We got along well and we seemed to have similar interests in terms of style, and it kind of all got thrown together there.”

Anderson is known to Yukoners as the lead singer from Donkeysmell. After that band’s breakup, he moved to Victoria, playing and recording with Smoked Out Brainzzz and Beer a Tribute to Fear.

“I was a hi red gu n,” he says.

In Meat the Vegans, Anderson is the main lyricist.

“When we hang out in the jam room and we’re joking about, I’ll pick up on a line, I’ll steal it and incorporate it,” he says. “I don’t really write music based on my own experiences; for the most part I like to put myself in another person’s experiences.”

That’s good because the lyrics cover dark topics: prescription drug abuse (“Ritalin”), insanity (“The Crepe”), cults (“Tongue Rock” and “Glossolalia”), zombies (“Undead Shuffle”) and alien invasion (“Alien Tribee”). Real vegans

Anderson’s singing matches his subject matter: harsh, threatening, angry, and at times hysterical. He also uses synthesizer on several tracks, adding a layer of psychedelia and B-movie sound effects to the songs.

Backed by punk-ska guitars and beats, this music sounds more like Rancid or Sublime than Donkeysmell. 100% Fat is actually a lean album of heavy rocking dance music.

It’s never boring.

Meat the Vegans have just finished a whirlwind tour of British Columbia, which included a gig at the Garage Showroom in Duncan.

That show is streaming on DuncanGarageShowRoom.ca/dgs-tv, with their performance starting roughly at the one-hour mark.

100% Fat is available at Triple J’s, at the band’s gigs or from any of the members. An EP of four songs from the album is currently available on iTunes, and the whole album should be available shortly.

Maintaining Eligibility for Publicly Funded Yukon Health Care

It is important that Yukoners have fair access to publicly-funded health care coverage. And as our health care costs grow, it is essential we spend our collective health care dollars wisely.

Around the Americas on Vegetable Oil Chilean couple reduce pollution and raise awareness on long distance road trip

A

travel-loving Chilean couple has begun a journey that will lead them through provinces, countries, continents, and even hemispheres.

And what’s more: they will fuel this year-long endeavour with waste vegetable oil, after spending most of June in Vancouver alongside mechanics, modifying their truck’s diesel engine.

Now Victor Millan and Carola Teixido are on the road North and they should arrive in the Yukon by the end of July.

They will continue North to Alaska before turning around and making a long southern decent.

From Alaska, it’s back though the Yukon into Alberta, then south along the west coast of the United States, and on to Mexico, Central America, and South America, finishing in Chile.

Despite the vast distance, the pair says they are in no hurry.

“We don’t want to rush,” says Teixido. “We don’t want to run everywhere. We want to go to the rivers, camp, and see everything.”

Along the way they hope to spread a message of environmental awareness, promoting recycling and sustainability.

“We’d like to inform, educate, and spread the word about fueling with vegetable oil,” says Teixido.

“We found vegetable oil and

we think it’s amazing,” says Millan.

“Because you are recycling first, second you are reducing the pollution of carbon dioxide emissions, and also you are saving money.”

By converting their truck to run on vegetable oil, and by sleeping in the camper, they effectively cut the two main expenditures of a life on the road.

“The most expensive item on a project like this is usually fuel,” says Millan. “But we are going with oil, and it’s basically free. If we can get a lot of oil, well — we can go forever.”

They will be acquiring most of their oil from restaurants along the way, which are usually pleased to give it away instead of paying for waste oil removal. This leads to a varying degree of oil quality, so time must be taken to test and properly filter.

“The biggest problem others have had is that they don’t worry about the oil quality,” says Millan.

“They put bad oil in with a spring roll floating – and that’s no good.

Millan and Teixido, graphic designers by trade, have learned enough to do their own mechanical work.

This is something else they want people to realize.

“You can teach people how to do it,” says Millan. “After a while I did 60 or 70 per cent of the conversion. I learned how to do it.

(We’re in) an interesting moment in the world when new energies are more important. Most of the tractors on farms — they are all diesel and are perfect for this.”

“We aren’t millionaires. We have simple jobs,” says Teixido.

“Many people can do this.”

I

observed this mama robin and her youngster over a period of about three days.

The young one was lagging behind in development and wasn’t able to fly any distance and definitely not to any height. The mama robin was very patient and protective, even feeding the young one, and I got this lucky shot.

It was so interesting to watch these two, their interactions, chirping back and forth to each other and so on. I still see the mama robin every day but the youngster has moved on.

Beer Memories

The good, the bad and the ugly

I

’ve been feeling a little nostalgic about beer lately. I don’t remember my first beer but I do remember my first six pack — not a pretty story.

I was 15 and went to a house party — a handful of teenagers hanging out drinking and watching an old horror movie called Q about a prehistoric bird in New York City.

I drank my way through half a dozen of somebody else’s Molson Canadian. I had the odd notion that I inherited my father’s alcohol tolerance and that I, a 120 pound girl, could pack away two litres of lager and remain coherent.

My math was off.

Unfortunately bad beer memories sometimes cling more tightly than good ones.

My first smoked beer was a German-style rauchbier brewed by a novice homebrewer. It tasted like charred molasses steeped in

tar, with a slap in the face of dirty exhaust fumes.

“Rauch” means smoke in German. Smoke in beer is an acquired taste. Smoked, homebrewed beer is even dicier, especially when the “brew master” raids his condiment shelf to make it.

I suggest you only drink it from reliable sources, like from your buddy who drives a crappy rusted-out Tercel but has a walk-in beer cooler, a yeast propagation room and who spends more time tweaking his brewing recipes than learning how to cook real food.

Yeah — that guy’s smoked beer is probably solid.

During the late 1980s I remember a proliferation of dry beers. I was a young beer drinker and the marketing sucked me right in. I was a

Molson Dry gal for a while — a total victim of advertising.

I think the Japanese started the dry wars – a hyper-competitive era in the Japanese beer world when a few breweries battled one another to produce the super-fun dry beer of choice.

Asahi Super Dry was the ultimate victor and you can still buy it today. Others, like Labatt Extra Dry, died sad and alone, like so many ill-advised beer experiments.

Can you say Zima?

Then came the ice beers.

Or maybe that was before the dry wars. Well, whatever — in geologic time, there were virtually simultaneous.

tent without finesse. You freeze the beer, remove the ice crystals (alcohol has a lower freezing temperature than water) and then recarbonate it.

But these beers were advocated by hefties — the Extra Old Stock drinkers who couldn’t get their buzz on quickly enough.

Everything above has been about bad or marginal beer memories. But that’s because the good memories are too numerous to mention.

Just like my favourite beer, my favourite memory is the one in progress right now.

The Scream of Summer

Ice cream cones are a waste-free snack: first you eat the ice cream, then you eat the holder.

t’s always the same. The temperature rises above 20°C and suddenly we’re all screaming for ice cream.

What is it about summer that makes us think the best thing to refresh us is a big lick of a thick, mucous-forming substance that sometimes makes our heads hurt and inevitably leaves us more dehydrated?

Even I, never an enthusiastic consumer of dairy products, admit to having driven all the way from Whitehorse to Carcross to eat ice cream. The only thing that beats a trip to the Haines Junction free store is a visit to Frosty Freeze for a cone.

Here’s the scoop (but not the skinny) as I see it: five good reasons why we like to eat ice cream in summer.

It takes us to our happy place.

Ice cream is a treat when you’re a child. It’s synonymous with special occasions and celebrations. So unless you grew up in a dysfunctional household where you were force fed ice cream, it most likely carries positive associations. We all become emotional eaters when it comes to ice cream.

she can just give them ice cream and call it a meal. And she will be the best mom ever (refer to reason #1).

Almost everyone likes it.

Unlike so many other desserts (I’m looking at you Jell-O) you can serve ice cream to a crowd of grateful adults or kids. If you don’t like ice cream, that’s your problem.

Flavours! Part of the thrill of ice cream is the countless flavours and the protracted decision-making that goes into your selection. Ben and Jerry’s entire business plan seems to be built on developing and marketing clever names for new flavours. There are gourmet, artisanal, small batch ice cream shops in most big cities with flavours like blue cheese and fig. Indeed nothing frustrates my 6-year old more than her 4-year old sister looking at a menu of 24 flavours and choosing vanilla.

Yes, there is wide variation in quality and styles, but unlike, say, cookies — those finicky desserts with endless variations of taste, shape, and texture — ice cream is consistently cold, sweet and creamy substance. Variations in

Forget the methane spewing from all those cows; eating ice cream is practically environmental.

It’s a meal and a dessert in one. On a hot day, when a parent doesn’t feel like cobbling together a cheese sandwich, or worse, putting out a lovely fruit tray that kids aren’t going to eat anyway,

taste are superficial.

So I hereby proclaim ice cream as the perogy of desserts.

Head over to your local ice cream parlour — your den of dessert, your stand of sweetness — and enjoy a treat.

Remember, there are only two seasons: winter and ice cream.

A Klondike Korner with Dan Davidson

Life Returns to the Palace Grand Theatre Series of shows called “Live at the Palace Grand” runs until Aug. 10

W

h e n “Arizona” Charlie Meadows built his Palace Grand Theatre in 1899 in Dawson City, it probably never occurred to him that some version of the place would still exist in 2013.

The current building is not exactly the original, though it does contain some of the original wood. The original was torn down, numbered, and put back together, with the addition of modern washrooms, new wiring and other updates.

If you compare their ages, the revived building is now nearly the same age as the original was before it was rebuilt. It remains an impressive structure and everyone who performs in it says it has a great sound.

Restored as part of a plan to hold an annual theatre festival, and launched with a money-losing run of Foxy (a Klondike remodeled version of Ben Jonson’s “Volpone”) it became the home of the less ambitious Gaslight Follies — a mixture of vaudeville and melodrama. The show was never a big money maker, but it was worth running as long as the tour bus crowd booked tickets as part of their cruise ship program.

The Gaslight Follies ran for over 35 years until it was killed by a bunch of terrorists and their airplanes. After September 2001, with the Holland-America cutting prices to attract less nervous (and less wealthy) travellers, that guaranteed audience was gone and the show began losing money.

It survived at a loss for a couple of years after that, but the growing tide of red ink could not be held back for long.

The show closed after the 2003 season, when it was expected it would actually lose $140,000.

Since then the palace has been seriously underused.

In between those bookends you will find Klondike singersongwriters, as well as Tomáš Kubínek, Al Simmons, Thomas Baxter (ThoughtControl), Declan O’Donovan and Claire Ness. There will also be an evening of locally produced films called Dawson on Screen.

This is happening under the guidance of the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture, with assistance from Parks Canada, and as part of the regional economic develop-

At the Klondike Development Organization forum on June 26, producer Emily Farrell conceded that timing and publicity were late and that this will affect the outcome of the season. But this is a pilot project and something that needed to be done to find out if it could work.

“KIAC is thrilled to partner with Parks Canada this season and give audiences from near and far the opportunity to enjoy the stunning Palace Grand Theatre as it was meant to be experienced – during live performances,” said Farrell in a late June press release.

Here’s hoping it all works out.

We rely on them.

This spring I noticed a lack of pollinators.

We have some pumpkin plants growing on our deck and while they have been blooming for over a month now, no fruit has set.

Even our pea patch, which is covered in flowers, isn’t humming like it usually does. There are pea pods coming, so something is pollinating the flowers but bees and wasps aren’t overly present.

If we had honeybees this wouldn’t worry me. Honeybees are one of the few insects that can be domesticated so to speak, and I find working with them to be very relaxing.

A few years ago I worked a couple of hives. They didn’t produce much honey because I got them late in the spring but it was nice to see the orderliness of their lives.

And when anything bloomed in the garden, even the broccoli, the place just hummed with their busyness.

My favourite insects are the pollinators, specifically honeybees. Pollinators are usually bees or wasps, but butterflies and moths also help.

Very small pollinating insects do a very large job. Without them many foods wouldn’t even exist.

ith summer comes the sound of songbirds and the hum of insects.

Often insects are seen as nuisances — pests that need bug dope to keep them away. And while I absolutely hate biting bugs there are some insects I find very interesting and necessary for gardening.

With ladybugs around aphids won’t be a problem in the garden.

When we lived on the prairies our house was the ladybugs’ winter home and we never worried about aphids even when the rest of the neighbourhood was complaining of them.

Also, earthworms are good for a garden. They don’t hurt plants, but rather tunnel around them — bringing air, water and other nutrients to the roots of plants, where they need it most.

Ants are common on our farm.

Ants are beneficial to a garden in small doses. Too many will definitely do damage to plants, and ants that “farm” aphids have been know to spread disease, but having them pass through — cleaning up small debris and even carrying off aphids — is great. I haven’t had any problems with ants in our garden so I generally let them do their thing.

I

n my last article I wrote about animal life in the summer; another interesting subject is plants in the Yukon.

The most popular plants are FLOWERS. Flowers give colour and beautiful fragrances for everybody to enjoy.

Flowers help out, too.

They give pollen and nectar that bees make honey with, both for themselves and my little sisters, who eat bread with peanut butter and honey every day for breakfast.

Flowers are also nice for little kids (and yes, sometimes 12-yearolds) to pick for their mothers, and for mothers to put in their secondbest vases.

One of the things that I like about flowers is that there is such a big variety of them so you can choose which kind you like most.

Dandelions are the favourites of the three smaller kids in my family.

My other younger sister is 10 and likes roses and forget–me-nots.

My favourite flower is the wild rose, which blooms just around my birthday. My Mom always takes the rose petals and dries them for tea. They also taste great in salads.

Boys aren’t too interested in flowers, they like mushrooms more — at least my younger brother does. My brother’s favourite mushroom is one that he calls the “fire mushroom.” He calls it that because when you hit it with a stick, red dust comes out.

The most annoying plants are weeds!

It is impossible to grow a garden and never pull out a single weed. Weeds can be almost as beautiful as flowers sometimes, but no matter how beautiful they look on roadsides, they almost never look beautiful in gardens, especially when you have to help weed your mother’s huge garden.

The last and most useful plants are trees and bushes.

Bushes give berries for dessert

and trees give green colours and nice shady spots on a hot summer day. Trees give fruit too, but there aren’t many fruit trees in the Yukon.

Plants also give us oxygen and clean the air. Plants are also the bottom of the food chain, so without plants there wouldn’t be any food for plant-eating animals, and without plant-eating animals, there wouldn’t be any food for meat-eating animals, so there wouldn’t be any animals without plants.

Without plants there wouldn’t be any air or animals. So let’s not take plants for granted; I for one am thankful that there are such wonderful things like plants in the Yukon.

I

t’s Saturday night in Whitehorse and Rose Vegter is wearing a satiny, layered, Klondike dress and feathered headpiece, drinking a beer next to her RV. In the winter she takes on little projects — this winter she designed a period-costume — but for the last seven summers she’s run the Hi Country RV Park.

“I love my job,” she says. “It’s like camping all the time and you meet people from all over the world. It’s awesome.”

I’m at Hi Country to meet the people behind the great summer pilgrimage; the steady caravan of RV’ers who arrive in our city each year — and I’m off to a good start.

Vetger and her partner Jayson Brown are just the sort of the offthe-grid types I’m looking for.

“We’re trying not to get locked

Who’s who in the Whitehorse RV parks into the system,” says Brown.

“We don’t have credit cards, the RV’s the only thing we’re paying for. The powers that be hate people like us, cause they don’t have their hooks in you, you know?”

Brown tells me the park draws all sorts of wayfarers: families of five or six from Europe or South America crammed together in tiny trailers, cyclists and marathon runners crossing Canada for charity; one year, a professor from Berkeley arrived and

claimed to be part of the team that invented the Internet for the US military.

Most of the rest are old folks.

Recently retired Harry Ulich is sitting around a picnic table with his wife Wendy. In front of them are plates of barbequed sausage and a few scattered cans of Miller Light. They’re from Prince George.

Ulich actually built his own RV. “I’m just a handy guy, I guess,” he says smiling.

He made his rig from a re-

modeled 99’ Ford Diesel. Inside, he’s installed two beds, a propane stove, a bathroom with a toilet, and a sink-and-shower, with a hose running through the wall outside. He’s even got an entertainment system — two TV’s, one of them colour and one black and white.

“We use the black and white one mostly,” he says. “It gets better reception.” He flicks the CD player on, “Take this job and shove it,” by Johnny Paycheck blares over the tinny speakers.

Touché.

Further down the crushed gravel path is a man with a name like half a limerick: Bill Butterfield of Matemora, Michigan.

He and his wife Joyce are making the trip to Alaska in something called a “leprechaun.” It’s a tight squeeze.

“We’ve had a few problems with our relationship,” he says.

Joyce nods behind him.

Their RV has taken them across the lower-48, through Canada, all the way to Alaska. That the RV is now also driving them apart is a poignant irony.

“Advice for traveling with your spouse?” he says. “Yeah, get a bigger damn RV.” The bigger damn RVs are parked down the highway at the cont’d on page 19...

Then I met the Francis family.

They’re a large clan traveling together in two RVs. They don’t speak much English and my shameful French is quickly the subject of a family joke.

“Ohhhh, Le Journal!” — their teenage son mocks me.

“Je suis journaliste!” the grandfather says, posing with his

camera like Jacques Cousteau.

Here’s what I gleaned: They’re from France. They set off three months ago, by boat to Halifax.

They’ve driven across Canada and plan to get to Alaska in the next couple of weeks. Calgary was thrilling.

“We saw the Calgary stampede,” says the mother.

“Yes, the Stampede!” echoes her husband, as a takes a photo

of me. “We have nothing like that in France!”

They’re attempting to drive all of North and South America in a year and a half and they’re documenting the whole thing in a blog.

It’s nearly 10 p.m. There are just a few people left hanging around in the Wal-Mart lot. The Francis family has bruised my generally unflappable confidence

and I can’t help but feel a sting of jealousy for the RV’ers living rough tonight.

I’d love to join them.

Then I think to myself, at least tomorrow I won’t be in Chicken, Alaska sharing a tiny camper with my grandpa.

Pioneer RV Park. It’s rocky and treeless, but it’s big enough for a mansion on wheels.

It’s here I meet Bill and Patsy Bolton. The couple, 69 and 73 years old respectively, have just retired and bought a 40-foot Winnebago, that looks like a taupe space shuttle — the kind of thing you’d expect the Rolling Stones to tour in. The current, latter day, Stones.

They are a rare species of RV’er, driving the highway in reverse, from Fairbanks south.

They’ve spent the last 29 years in Alaska.

“It’s been a great ride up here,” he says, “but we won’t miss the cold. We’re getting out.”

The Boltons are en route to a new home they bought in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. But first they plan to visit Bill’s 90-year-old mother in Salmon, Idaho and then drive around America for a year or so.

“We’re just going to take it slow,” says Bill. “You won’t beat up your rig if you take it slow.”

In the summer, the Walmart parking lot becomes an unofficial RV camp.

Pulling up to Walmart, I see father and son, Fernando and Julien Acosta of Gatineau, Quebec.

Fernando is mid-way on a North America wide road trip accompanied by his puppy Xangô, and Julien is in town for a conference of French-Canadian journalists.

They’ve only got a few hours together.

“I guess I’m going North because it exists, and that’s enough to make me want to see it,” says Fernando. “I love doing this. It’s just you and the road.”

He says, even at his age, he’s not nervous to be making the trip alone. “I’m 67-years-old, and my

hen you’ve used a dull axe or knife you appreciate the difference a proper sharpening makes. It takes time to keep edges and points keenly sharp, but it pays off in the long run.

New, good quality fishing hooks are extremely sharp and easily penetrate-and-hold in both softmouthed fish such as grayling or whitefish, and hard-mouthed fish such as pike, lake trout or salmon.

When a sharp hook snags inside the mouth a pull by the angler or a head-jerk by the fish sets the hook. The bony mouth of a pike or large salmon will not be caught with a dull hook; dull hooks allow for a delay in attachment to the fish’s mouth and often permit the hook to be spat out.

Most of our fishing, such as trolling or casting, is done with a moving lure, and a current moves the lure even more, causing the hooks to drag on the bottom, bumping

and snagging on rocks and gravel.

All these snags and temporary hang-ups wear down the point of the hook. Your hook point should be examined each time it makes contact with some unseen bottom structure.

A miniature file or whetstone should be carried to touch up hooks between casts.

Small hook sharpeners worn on a necklace are inexpensive and available locally. However, a higher price usually means greater satisfaction for the angler.

I carry a small diamond sharpener about the size of a pen, which clips to a shirt pocket. It has a flat side with a groove running lengthwise for hooks and a rounded side for other tasks.

High quality hooks are not expensive, so replace them when a filing won’t bring back their required sharpness. Even new lures and spoons often need a bit of work because factory sharpening is sometimes inadequate.

Our fishing regulations require the use of barbless hooks in many situations. Barbed hooks can be made barbless by using pliers to flatten them. It is not uncommon to damage the point while squeezing down the barb. So check it, and if damaged, touch it up with your sharpener. As these hooks become damaged, replace them with good quality barbless hooks, which are easier keep sharp.

If you haven’t been checking your hooks, this small oversight has probably cost you some fish.

With sharp hooks a lot more hits will result in solid hook-ups.
