Live from the Sticks

A

t the 2012 Dawson City Music Festival (DCMF), attendees are in for a treat.

With a lineup that became progressively more exciting as it was leaked over the early months of spring, one of the bands that stands out is The Deep Dark Woods.

Well, to me anyway.

You see, a strange thing happens when you live in the Yukon

for a while. Almost in an instant, your tastes change.

You want something, more.

Down home. Softer, yet more profound.

Their brand of alt-folk-country has me and many others excited about The Deep Dark Woods coming this far north.

The best part is we are not the only ones.

the DCMF for a while,” remarks Chris Mason, bassist and backing vocalist for the band.

“We’ve had plenty of friends go up to Dawson and work for the summer. We’ve all heard a lot about it, and we’re pumped to go to such an amazing place.”

Mason has toured Canada, the U.S., and different parts of the globe with the group. This year alone will take them to the Ottawa Bluesfest, the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island, Austin City Limits in Austin, Texas, and dates in the United Kingdom and Europe.

The Deep Dark Woods, out of Saskatoon, was founded in 2005 as group of guys who either grew up together or were friends of those friends.

The ensemble features songwriter and guitarist Ryan Boldt, lead guitarist Burke Balow, bassist and backing vocalist (who also adds to a few tracks of his own songs to the discs), Mason, keyboard aficionado Geoff Hilhorst, and drummer and multi-instrumentalist Lucas Goetz.

Their sound has matured over the years. From their first selftitled release in 2006, self-recorded in 12 hours, they have toured incessantly. After their third album, they brought in Hilhorst.

“Geoff joined the band after Winter Hours. It totally changed the dynamic for the good,” Mason tells me.

“We had a vision of what we wanted to sound like, and now we

have it.”

That vision has taken them on the road once again during the 2012 festival season.

“We’ve done a lot of touring, and have gotten better and better over the years,” says Mason.

“We’ve even got agents, and are working with Six Shooter Records in Canada and Sugar Hill Records in the U.S. These things keep opening better opportunities for us.”

2009’s Winter Hours, the group’s third disc, produced by Steve Dawson and released by Black Hen Music, received rave reviews from critics and earned several awards including Best Roots Group at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards, and Ensemble of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards.

Winter Hours also earned The Deep Dark Woods numerous other nominations.

“Those things are a bonus.

None of our goals are to win awards,” says Mason. “We honestly just want to play more and more shows, go to different countries, and have amazing adventures... but winning does feel great.”

During tours, the musicians are slowly working on new songs. In their down time they sit down and record what they’ve all come up with.

The Place I’ve Left Behind is their latest, released by Six Shooter Records last August.

It was recorded in Halifax, at the same studio where they re-

corded their contribution to the 2009 edition of CBC Radio 2’s Great Canadian Song Quest. They liked the room and the engineer, and thought they’d try it out.

“With each album we try to switch up different things to have a naturally unique sound. For The Place I Left Behind we rented a ton of pedals and guitars and amps,” says Mason.

“When we we’re recording we were playing on cool, unfamiliar equipment, and that contributed to the album’s outcome.”

It paid off.

Sun Media called their latest “a masterpiece of sombre beauty and eternal heartbreak”, and Exclaim! noted The Place I Left Behind “is another wholly satisfying album that builds upon past successes and carries the band forward as one of the country’s finest roots acts.”

The Deep Dark Woods can’t wait to put on a show under the midnight sun.

“Right now we’re focusing on just playing good shows. Come December we’ll have a break,” says Mason.

Carving Whilst Drinking

T

here’s an ongoing story surrounding Scott Rogers’ Meanders Into Nonesuch Place.

At the center of this story is Jan Welzl, an Arctic explorer, locksmith and inventor whose life reads like an epic saga.

Welzl spent his life traipsing around the world, lived in a Si-

able from one another. Scott Welzl. Jan Rogers.

Inside the gallery, there’s an array of objects, images and documents, each carrying its own piece of the story.

The floor is scattered with detailed line drawings traced onto small fragments of paper and se-

drawings has been placed on the ground in front of one. The result produces a dull teasing effect, as if to poke fun at the machines and their impossibility and impracticality.

One side of the room is occupied by a wooden structure reminiscent of the machines depicted in the line drawings.

A twine runs through a series of precarious mechanisms to attach to a bottle of Czech beer.

It’s unclear whether this machine has a purpose, but it seems as if it

It’s clear that Welzl’s story has been a driving force in Rogers’ project, on display this month at the ODD Gallery in Dawson.

Rogers has gathered materials for the show in the same way one might gather materials to build a shelter in the wild, picking up whatever is at hand and testing it for its strength and efficiency.

Together, the works in the exhibition behave like a kind of raconteur—a storyteller you might meet by chance in the street or in a bar.

In the retelling of the tale, Rogers has become so entwined with the story that its two central characters—Scott Rogers and Jan Welzl—start to blur and merge together, becoming indistinguish-

cured to the ground by a casual constellation of pebbles and coins.

Some of the drawings depict perpetual motion machines. Other drawings are traced from vintage cartoons depicting unnecessarily complicated, over-the-top machines designed to carry out simple or ridiculous tasks.

There are far more electrical sockets installed in the room than necessary, and each of the

wouldn’t take much to set “Drinking Buddy Emulator” into motion and trigger a clumsy series of chain reactions.

Nearby is an unfinished wooden carving whittled away from a chunk of limewood. It’s beginning to take on the shape of a man.

Rogers declares that the statue depicts Jan Welzl and will be whittled throughout the duration of his lifetime.

The same statue features in one of a pair of video works looping on a television monitor placed on the floor.

“King and Fifth” shows the statue of Welzl sitting on the grass, supposedly at the former site of the adventurer’s late residence just up the street. Any trace of the house has now disappeared, and the figure sits motionless in a pile of futility and long summer grass.

The other video in the loop, “New Siberia or Thereabouts”, shows a sink filling with water into a wooden box containing Jan Welzl’s book, floating.

Hanging on the wall is “Legend”, a circular rubbing of brown pastel on newsprint.

There’s something resembling text

scrawled all over the shape, but it doesn’t show up too clearly.

It pushes you away and pulls you back again. Perhaps it’s trying to tell you something. One moment you think you’re discerning a word or a sentence, and the next moment you’re lost again.

On the opposite side of the gallery is a round wooden tabletop without legs—the object of the rubbing.

Hand-carved into its surface are the lyrics of a shanty song— the kind you’d sing while toiling in a mine or out at sea, a tactless drinking song that’s somehow sobering in its sincerity, a simple, honest rhythm to plug away to, the kind that helps to soften hard labour. A song to whittle to.

It’s clear that Rogers treats his thinking and his materials in much the same way. He’s taken tracing paper and drawn over situations, stories, recorded and unrecorded histories.

The more time you spend with this work, the more you become aware that the marks left on the page are something entirely different from their original object.

Meanders Into Nonesuch Place is filled with messages that aren’t afraid to be open-ended and implicit. The work presents us with the traces of something rather than the actual thing, because the actual thing is impossible to see when you’re looking directly at it.

Carving, drinking, carving, drinking.

Meanders Into Nonesuch Place is on display in the ODD Gallery in Dawson City until July 27.

The Largesse of Yukon Art

H

arreson Tanner and Serena Kovalosky have just returned from a two-week scouting mission around the territory, but there is no sign of roadweary haggardness.

Instead, both brim over with excitement for their collaboration on an ambitious art exhibition that will bring the Yukon’s artistic largesse to the outside world.

Best known for his clay and bronze sculptures of Northern icons, Tanner has become part of the local arts tapestry. But it is his involvement in the Copper Moon Gallery and the Yukon Artists at Work co-op, that speaks to his support of local artists seeking to bring their work to the public.

Enter Serena Kovalosky, a seasoned curator and arts administrator visiting from upstate New York—on a mission.

Tanner and Kovalosky are spearheading an art exhibition that will bring a vast spectrum of unique Yukon artists and their work to the United States.

The two, freshly returned from this curatorial excursion along with photographer Christian Kuntz, interviewed and photographed artists from Ross River, Dawson and communities beyond.

Wood carver Ken Anderson, watercolourist Lillian Loponen, knife maker George Roberts, carver Bud Young and painter/biolo-

gist Joyce Majiski are among the 16 Yukon artists who will make up the eclectic exhibition, chosen to represent the depth of the Yukon’s artistic prowess.

Tanner and Kovalosky say the final will be comprised of about half First Nations artists and half non-First Nations.

Tanner’s belief in Yukon artists and Kovalosky’s curatorial expertise complement each other as they paint a picture of the envisioned exhibition.

Their hope is that the collection of Yukon art will travel to a handful of museums throughout the Northeastern states.

“This will be the first big event

that takes local artists out to the rest of the world,” Tanner says.

The exhibition, tentatively titled What We See: Visions of Canada’s Yukon Past and Present, reflects the territorial slogan, “Larger Than Life”. Pieces with volume and heft have been selected, and the choice of museum venues rather than art galleries reinforces that message.

Kovalosky describes the impact of large pieces in vast space: “I want people to walk in and really see that [bigness].”

It is clear that the two struck gold on their two-week scouting trip.

While awed by the variation and expertise in artistry, they also quickly discovered “the stories are just as interesting as the art,” as Kovalosky puts it.

Tanner relays Majiski’s story of standing in the midst of a caribou stampede; scat, stink, hair, and snort washing up and over her, until the herd disappearing over the brink of a hill into sudden silence.

The anecdote gives Majiski’s powerful imagery of caribou stampedes even more thrust, Kovalosky relates.

“She was actually living in it.”

Such stories have been collected, along with photographs and video, to complement the artwork itself in order to create more than a travelling exhibit; the artists, the curators, their work, and their stories have built a community.

This preliminary fact-finding work, as Kovalosky says, “creates an energy around the project — the artists are already invested.”

Tanner and Kovalosky hope the exhibition will take place in 2014.

eards, chainsaws, ingenuity, beards, rusty trucks, dogs, beards, puns, beards and beards, and grinning balls of lichen—these are the things the Klondike Drawing Company (KDC) is made of.

Aubyn O’Grady and Rian Lougheed-Smith have used skills they learned in the Yukon to begin an illustration and silk-screening business in the heart of the Dawson City community. They print shirts for local businesses and sell designs of their own.

A trip to their studio reveals an idyllic scene complete with homemade flags and herds of happy dogs.

Inside, there is a kitchen area, a bedroom that has been converted into a darkroom for prepping the photosensitive screens, and a living area/office/production room complete with witty sayings and lovely drawings tacked to every surface.

“Rian and I both went to [Yukon School Of Visual Art (SOVA)], although a year apart. At the end of spring, beginning of the summer last year, some screen-printing equipment came up for sale and Rian and I had been talking,” says O’Grady.

“We have similar ideas, backgrounds, illustration styles, or complementary illustration styles, and so we decided to start printing T-shirts, mostly to make our own stuff,” she continues.

“We weren’t even super close friends,” Lougheed-Smith adds, “but we recognized that we thought we’d work well together, and we both wanted to be here making work.”

The KDC was born. They started out printing T-shirts in the kitchen and bathroom of O’Grady’s apartment.

“It was so small!” says O’Grady.

“And we had an incredibly patient roommate,” adds LougheedSmith.

“Aubyn’s roommate put up with us literally just taking over the entire kitchen, so every sink was filled with paint spatulas or ink or emulsion. There were stacks of screens beside the toilet drying in the washroom.”

“And then wall-to-wall in the kitchen, T-shirts were hanging from the ceiling,” says O’Grady.

“It was nuts!”

In one year they have grown out of the tiny bathroom and moved into the studio, located in the Callison industrial park just outside of Dawson.

In the bigger space, the company has taken on larger corporate projects.

“There’s lots of places in town [that want printing done]—Dawson’s a T-shirt-friendly place,” says Lougheed-Smith.

While they stick to contracts of around 50 or so, “we could do more,” she says.

Mostly it seems to depend on equipment and studio space.

“We’re not automated at all, so each T-shirt is printed by us, heat-pressed by us, folded by us,

we can make this happen anywhere else.’”

In addition, the Yukon and cando attitude of Dawsonites keeps them here.

“I fell in love with this place,” says Lougheed-Smith. “It’s a place that’s really encouraging and supportive of people doing their own thing and making it happen here.”

She explains that being local also means clients can become more involved in the design process.

“I can meet with someone and show them a sketch or an idea and they can be, like, ‘Oh, can I include this text here or this there?’”

Their local success has led to national publicity, as SOVA sponsored them to have a table at the spring One of a Kind craft show in Toronto.

“It was a little nerve-wracking because we’ve sold things up here and our designs generally involve ravens and beards and partiallynaked bearded women, and chainsaws and things, and puns, and we weren’t sure if that would translate,” says Lougheed-Smith.

“But we had people guffawing and in tears in our booth, just loving stuff.”

The pair has been invited back to the One of a Kind Christmas show and sale, which is over twice the size of the spring show—one of the largest craft shows in Canada.

On top of all this, they were featured in Flare magazine online as one of the “7 Favourites From Toronto’s One of a Kind Show”.

“I was really happy to see [us] there—it’s something moms understand universally,” says O’Grady.

In the future, O’Grady and Lougheed-Smith look to adding a line of children’s clothing, and run silk-screening workshops, including at Arts Underground in Whitehorse, August 25 and 26.

At the end of the day, they simply love their work.

“It’s the best, printing our Tshirts is so fun,” says O’Grady.

“We always get excited,” says Lougheed-Smith. “It’s kind of like magic every time you pull a shirt off, because there’s nothing on it—it’s a blank T-shirt.

“And then with one swipe of a squeegee, you’ve got this drawing that you pictured what it might look like on a T-shirt, and it’s actually there! It’s like casting a spell on the shirt.”

On top of the joy of printing, the artists are discovering other bonuses that come with having a successful T-shirt business.

“I bar tend at [Bombay Peggy’s] and I love it when people I’ve never seen before walk in wearing one of our shirts. I just get the hughest kick out of it,” laughs Lougheed-Smith.

“Like, I drew that chainsaw that’s on your chest right now!”

T

he first time Lonnie Powell noticed the drums was when he was a kid at a wedding with his mom.

He watched the drummer in the wedding band and thought to himself, “I want to try that.”

But it wasn’t necessarily the drumming that caught his attention.

“He looked so happy,” Powell recalls. “I wanted to do whatever he was doing.”

The joy of drumming has remained Powell’s fuel as a musician. It also marks the experience of watching him play.

Powell is a much-requested drummer on the local scene. At the recent Atlin Arts and Music Festival, he was onstage so much you were more likely to notice when he was not the drummer.

And while he’d rather discuss the Yukon’s strong community of musicians than be singled out himself, it’s an understatement to say he is one of that community’s pearls.

Watch Powell once and you’ll understand why he’s in demand.

Perched at the back, seated behind his kit, Powell’s percussion both backs up the band with a steady hand and explodes into the forefront at all the right times.

He’s the kind of musician who manages to sound simultaneously free and superbly technical. His joie de vivre as you watch him play is infectious.

Fittingly, Powell’s class at this year’s Yukon Summer Music Camp is titled “The Joy of Drumming.”

It’s his second year at the camp, and his approach to teaching reflects his own education as a drummer.

“Drumming is just like dancing with your hands,” he says.

Focusing on feeling rhythm more than practicing technique, Powell likes to guide students of all ages to participate with the music. Students start out on hand drums and graduate to kits.

“They’re basically the same thing,” he explains in another pared-down and bang-on observation. “You’re just 16 inches farther from the target.”

Powell’s own background includes a crazy-quilt mix of mentors, as well as independent study and years of experience.

The legendary Jim Blackley taught him that, “How you live your life is how you drum,” a philosophy which requires a life lived authentically.

His admiration of Cuban drummers also reflects his view of music as an inclusive, communitybuilding tool.

“The Cuban guys know [music] is for everyone. There’s no magic here...There’s no such thing as talent; you do the work or you don’t.”

Another particular inspiration was the renowned Puerto Rican drummer, Giovanni Hidalgo, whom Powell calls “the baddest drummer ever, because he’s so in the moment.”

After years of distilling his practice down to key truths, Powell’s drumming emanates total absorption in the moment and an appreciation for community.

Clearly, the Cuban approach to inclusivity has shaped Powell’s life as a musician.

It’s a whole lot more than technique you get when you learn from Powell, or watch him play.

Michael Mason’s Single Line

I

t’s a slow Sunday afternoon and Michael Mason is a little discouraged at the low turnout for his one-man art show at the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Community Hall. It probably doesn’t help that there’s work being done on the roof of the building and the entrance looks a bit like a construction zone.

Mason muses that he generally has a better turn out when he has these shows at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, just across the street. We agree that it does look more like the sort of place you’d go to see an art show.

On display is a piece from 1995, which shows one of the earliest expressions of his technique. In stark red line on a black background it shows an eagle going after a fish— a scene that he actually recalls witnessing.

In this work it is easy to see that every part of the image is generated by a single line that moves around the painting.

In some of his more crowded, newer work it is easy to imagine the line but there’s so much happening in the almost psychedelic image that it’s hard to follow it.

PHOTO: Dan Davidson Mason has quite a range of pieces in this show. One table is covered with his jewelry designs in bone and metal: rings, pendants and other lovely things.

There are also intricate carvings of eagles, wolves and caribou, cut out of antler with a band saw and finely finished. The carvings have been his major focus of late.

The room is dominated by paintings however, some on Masonite board, most on canvas, all executed in the “one-line” style that he has been perfecting for the

“Yes, you look at most of my images (of this type) and it distorts your eyes,” he agrees. He likes the fact that the newer canvases are crowded with images that reveal themselves in a different way every time you look at the work.

There’s more colour in the never pieces. He has found that an atmospheric wash helps to create a mood, while a bold single colour is still his preferred choice for the line that creates the image and tells the story. He’s pleased with

his recent results.

What he isn’t happy with is the scale at which he is working. He’d like to do some really big canvases in that style, the size that you find in public buildings. He also like to find a bigger market to sell them in.

He’s been working more on the marketing of his art, having recently established a Facebook page, “Michael Mason, Artist”, where he has posted a few works and written a bit about what inspired him to create them.

Marketing is not what he wants to be spending his energy on, however. He’d like to find someone who could do that for him and let him concentrate on the creation of new works.

“I’m at the level now where I can create this stuff, all the images, but if I could find someone a partner, to just grab it and run with it, it’s marketable.”

Most of the images, whether carved or painted, come from his life and the stories of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in people. While on a recent sojourn in Alaska, which began in 2010, he met more of his Hän relatives and learned many more bits of Athapascan lore. These have been influencing his 2011 and 2012 works.

His desire to find a larger market comes from more than just a wish to sell more work. He wants to enhance the general awareness of a native perspective.

“With all the spiritual connections that my family here and in Alaska have with the land today, still (it’s frustrating) that people can’t see this stuff and respect it. The storylines are just continuous and it just keeps going.

Mason has said in the past that if you placed all his work side by side you could even follow that one line from piece to piece. At this point, after the length of time he’s been at it, that would be one very long line.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

ukon Film Society’s Available Light Cinema series is scheduled for at least one summer showing at the Yukon Arts Centre, although it’s been switched from Sunday to Thursday performances.

This month’s offering is a dynamic double bill, featuring a documentary on one of the most influential musicians of our time, as well as New Zealand’s topgrossing film of 2010.

Marley, from Scottish-born director Kevin MacDonald, has to be the definitive statement on the life and times of Jamaica’s preeminent reggae superstar.

When Bob Marley died in February 1981 of melanoma, he left behind a legacy that transcended his career as the veritable founder of reggae music as we know it.

Marley’s worldwide influence was such that, had he wanted, he could have run for any political office, just about anywhere.

Instead, he chose to convey through his music an eternal mes-

sage of peace and brotherhood that made people sit up and take notice, and bequeathed on him legions of adoring fans.

Director of last year’s The Eagle, Kevin MacDonald is perhaps best known for his 2006 biography of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, The Last King of Scotland.

For Marley, MacDonald was granted full co-operation from Bob Marley’s family, which enabled him to make extensive use of filmings of concert performances , personal interviews and never-before-seen archival footage.

Asked by an interviewer if he is a rich man, Marley says, “I don’t have that kind of richness; my richness is life.”

Indeed, his 36 years were truly full, with 11 children, mothered by seven different women, and fame that spread worldwide.

Marley is two and a half hours of delight, wonder and admiration for a man who died too soon, and

The Other Side of the Andes

I

n my last several articles, I have been reviewing a number of inexpensive, yet tasty Malbec and Malbec blend red wines from Argentina.

The high altitudes, dry climates and pure waters of the Andes contribute to the growing of terrific grape stock, which makes a large contribution to the success of the Argentinian wine industry.

What we sometimes forget is that Chile, on the west tide of the Andes, also benefits from many of the same factors, and is also creating some outstanding wines of its own.

I was reminded of this as I tasted a Vino Ventisquero Root:1 Cabernet Sauvignon ($17.15), a Chilean red wine from the famed Colchagua Valley.

The wine makers etch right on the front of their bottle that, “Chile’s isolation, protected by the mighty Andes to the east, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean to the west, ensures that grape vines remain on the original rootstock, in the purest form.”

Tha phylloxera louse, an insect that decimated most of France’s and other countries’ grape vines

when they colonized the region.

In the 18th century, Chile was known mostly for its sweet wines.

A British admiral (the grandfather of poet Lord Byron) travelling across Chile in the 1700s compared the taste of Chliean wines of that period to the then-popular sweet Portuguese Madeira wines.

By the middle of the 19th century, French wine grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were introduced by European immigrants, and French style wines began to emerge, though not of great quality.

By the 1980s, there was a rebirth of Chilean wine making with the adoption of modern wine making techniques, including the use of stainless steel fermentation tanks along with French and American oak aging barrels.

Over 10 years, from 1995 to 2005, the number of Chilean wineries grew from 12 to over 70, raising Chile to the rank of ninth largest wine producer in the world, as well as the fifth largest exporter.

In the U.S., Chile is the fourth largest wine importer, beaten only

by France, Italy and Australia!

As the Roots:1 label mentions, and as an article in Wikipedia describes: “Chile’s natural boundaries (Pacific Ocean, Andes Mountain, Atacama Desert to the north and Antarctica to the south) has left it relatively isolated from other parts of the world and has served to be beneficial in keeping the phylloxera louse at bay.”

The traditional defence against phylloxera has been for grape growers to graft traditional grape vines (like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and other varietals) to types of grape vine roots that are resistant to the phylloxera louse.

Because the geographical features of Chile protect the vineyards from the phylloxera louse, Chilean wineries boast of the “purity” of their vines, in that they are unadulterated by grafting different roots to the traditional varieties of grape vines.

Chile’s wine making tradition dates back to the 16th century, when Spanish conquistadors and missionaries brought traditional Spanish grape vines with them

Root:1 comes from Chile’s Rapel Valley, in the Colchagua Province, located across the Andes from Argentina’s best-known wine region, Mendoza Province, so it is no surprise that such tasty vines are emerging from that location.

The Rapel wine region is particularly known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, of which Root:1 is a great example.

I drank the Root:1 with friends who were serving a pork roast with dinner.

Though I did not have my aerator with me, right out of the bottle the wine had a good, dark fruit bouquet (smell) that reminded me of ripe plums or even blueberries, coupled with a deep red colour that I liked.

To me, the taste had both bright red cherry flavours, and

hints of tobacco and even licorice as I swallowed. The taste was full, acidic enough to cut the fatty taste of the pork roast, and with a happy finish (the taste/smell that remained in my mouth after I swallowed the wine) that was very pleasant.

I have been happily surprised by a number of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignons, and can genuinely recommend this one. I want to go back and explore some blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère from this country, and they will likely be very tasty.

Give one of these a try with roast or BBQ’d meat. I think you’ll enjoy it!

Mambo Tanzania: Pt. 1 M

ambo! That’s not true Swahili. Jambo is the informal Swahili greeting equivalent to Hello.

Mambo... well, that’s the colloquial greeting that most closely translates to “What’s Up?” So I guess it’s appropriate to call this series Mambo Tanzania.

My journey started as a quest to summit the highest mountain on the African continent, immortalized by Ernest Hemingway’s novel, The Snows of Kilimanjaro.

Based out of Moshi, Tanzania, I would use the eight-day Lemosho Trail (longer, but with more acclimation hikes to combat altitude sickness, and a higher success rate than any other route up the mountain).

While the summit was the purpose and focus of my trip, it turned out not to be the highlight.

The people I met there were definitely the high point of my journey.

While the 15 others I hiked with—sharing a bond that’s only forged on a venture like this—will remain friends of mine forever, it was the people of Moshi and the surrounding villages who had the most surprising and memorable impact.

The welcoming nature of the people of Tanzania was evident from the first drive into our resort. Welcoming smiles were everywhere and a wave from inside the van would be returned with a smile.

I was most impressed by the entrepreneurial nature of the people I met. Never have I encountered a larger and more persistent (and effective) sales force than the

What’s Up Yukon copublisher Mark Beese recently embarked on the adventure of a lifetime—an assault on Tanzania’s fabled Mount Kilimanjaro. This is the first of three articles about his adventure. vendors and “independent” salespeople on the streets of Moshi.

As a salesperson myself, I may be biased, but I would definitely say I was the one member of our group who most enjoyed the efforts of the street vendors and got the most attention from them.

Musa was probably the hardestworking of the vendors I met. I encountered him in his “store”.

I put quotes around that because, as I gained more experience as a consumer on the streets, I learned that the salesman you’re dealing with at the stall may not actually have anything to do with that store.

More on that later.

Musa found out I wanted a hat, a “Just done it” T-shirt and a Tanzanian football jersey. However, the store didn’t have either of the shirts in my size.

I negotiated what I thought was a good price on the hat, but left without the shirts. Musa was urging me to come back, swearing he would have my shirts. Because I had negotiated a good rate on the hat, he expected me to pay his price.

I made a mental note to avoid that store and find my price and size elsewhere. That wouldn’t happen.

Musa found me not once, but twice more—the first time with my “Just done it” shirt, for which I had to pay “his” price.

A half-hour later, across town on the third floor of a commercial complex, I ran into Musa, holding a Tanzanian football jersey with the XXL tag I required.

(In the end, it fit my 12-year-old son, not me. Buyer Beware is an important concept on the streets of Moshi.)

Factoring in the level of effort Musa put into finding and selling me that shirt, it is likely my favourite overpayment of the entire trip.

Julius 1 helped me through some of my most difficult times on Kilimanjaro One of my favourite experiences was running into the same three street vendors, not only in town but also across from the resort when we were leaving for the mountain.

I found myself in the midst of more than one selling scrum, which I am certain I can attribute to my good friend and travelling companion, Dan Belhassen (either that, or a chalk mark on my back).

While some may see these as intimidating confrontations, I saw great negotiating opportunities.

On Day One I purchased “handmade” Mambo and Kilimanjaro wristbands, three for $10.

In the end, by working the scrums, I was buying them as low

as two for $1 and an average of about $0.65 each.

My kids have a ton of them to give away, so if you see them, just ask for one.

The funniest encounter was the young man who assured Dan that the official Tanzanian football jersey he was selling he had made by hand the night before.

So... back to the “his” store explanation.

The street vendors sometimes had goods of their own to sell but, just as often, they would try to bring you to their stores, which invariably donated 10 percent of each sale to the local orphanage (if you believe that, I have a land deal to talk to you about).

After a while, I figured out that these guys had nothing to do with that store. The store owner would allow them to sell their product and collect payment, except that the price they negotiated was higher than the store owner’s asking price.

The practice was so common that never once did I ever see a price marked on any of the products. I don’t know the financial agree-

ment between the store owner and the independent salesperson, but the value of the salespeople to the stall owner was significant. They definitely drew traffic!

The local people I got to know best were the guides from the resort, for both the hike and the town tours.

Victor was one of the best of the town-tour guides. He took us to a couple of local eateries and shared his story openly. His support of local orphanages ended up to be legit, which I learned on a post-hike visit to one.

Victor came from a poor family and didn’t have the education needed to climb the ranks of guiding opportunities in Tanzania. He spelled out the time and money it would take to fill in the gaps in his education, and how guiding tourists in town would help get him there.

Granted, this was part sales pitch to get a bigger tip, but I was convinced it wasn’t all bogus.

Victor was good friends with Hamisi, one of the assistant guides on our trip up Kilimanjaro.

Hamisi is a man whose heart is the most disproportionately large in comparison to his size that I have ever met. While his efforts on the mountain were incredible, it was his offer to Robbie that most impressed me.

Robbie was one of the guests on our trip up the mountain—a big guy, about 285 lbs at the start of

the journey—with more heart and drive than anyone else on the hill.

He was an inspiration to everyone in our group.

On a day when we were all battered and beaten by the hill, Robbie was struggling more than the rest of us.

Hamisi, this little guy, asked, “Mr. Robbie, would you like me to carry you down the hill?”

You could just tell that if that is what Robbie had needed, Hamisi would have lifted Robbie right onto his back and carried him as far as it took.

All the guides had this undying level of effort to make sure we got where we needed to go. I’ll talk another time about Julius 1 and how his quiet strength carried me through some of my most difficult times on the mountain.

Our head guide was Mike, who led a team of 61 (yup, 61 people to support the 16 of us going up the mountain).

While he spent almost all his time well behind the rest of the team, hiking with the slowest of the guests, he had an incredible handle on the needs and condition of all of the hikers and commanded his team perfectly.

He handled the diversity of our group with endless patience and treated the most stressedout clients with an even temper that would put a Tibetan monk to shame.

Our lead guide, Mike, is working to build a chicken farm to supplement his income tractors, not employees, so the competition is significant. While Mike certainly got rave reviews from all of our team, he was also working towards building up a small chicken farm to supplement his guiding income.

As I noted on the comment form at the resort, I would gladly put my life in Mike’s hands with confidence again.

I could easily go back to Tanzania and Moshi, not necessarily to climb a mountain, but just to spend time with some of the incredible, entrepreneurial people of that country.

for road relays, trail marathons, and the crowning of the “King of the Canyon”.

The organizers of the Southern Lakes Bike Loppett hope to change that trend.

The five-leg bike relay that sees teams of riders cover the 173 km between Tagish, Mount Lorne, Carcross, Marsh Lake and Golden Horn is celebrating its fifth anniversary.

“It’s actually our sixth race, though,” laughs Simi Morrison, the race coordinator. “We called the first year of the race ‘year zero’ as it was a huge experiment and we really didn’t know what would happen. Six years later we’re still going strong.”

From its humble beginnings the race has grown to see a recordbreaking 100 riders take part last year on teams of two, three to five, and solo riders.

“We always get a group of solo riders who did the Kluane Chilkat as solo riders,” explains Morrison.

“After riding the 238 km over the passes into Alaska our race is a piece of cake for them.”

The race attracts a wide range of abilities.

“We get families and team of friends and colleagues, along with a set of very competitive and serious riders,” says Morrison.

“We always give out a range of awards at our post-race shindig,” Morrison explains.

“The top team receives yellow shirts (a nod to the yellow leader’s jerseys from the Tour de France), while the last team across the line wins the ‘Crooked Wheel’ award.”

The Crooked Wheel award is a race tradition. Organizers scour the local dumps for a beat-up and battered bike wheel that is then decorated by the host community centre.

“One year the Crooked Wheel was won by a team that broke the records for most flat tires during the race—five in total—so the prize was actually very appropriate,” laughs Morrison.

“I’m always impressed with how proud people are to be given the wheel. I’ve even seen a previous year’s wheel hanging in one of the labs in the Whitehorse hospital.”

Unfortunately the road conditions on the race course do some-

times contribute to those flat tires.

“We don’t have the difficult and gruelling terrain that the Kluane Chilkat has,” says Morrison, “but what we do have is chip seal—several sections of it. It is a challenge to ride over. We sometimes joke that we should re-name the race to ‘the Chip Seal Challenge’.”

Morrison adds that the other race challenge is the wind.

“The legs that travel past both Marsh Lake and Bennett Lake can be very difficult due to the winds.

In fact, often for the riders coming into Carcross, the closer they get the more of a challenge the riding becomes due to the wind off the lake.”

The start (and end) of the race rotates yearly to a different one of the five host communities. This year Golden Horn, the fifth and final community to host the event (Marsh Lake hosted events zero and one), will entertain participants with the event’s traditional meal (included in the registration costs) and beer garden.

“It’s been an interesting chal-

lenge setting up Golden Horn to host the race,” Morrison says.

“Unlike the other four communities, they don’t have a community centre, which makes it more of a challenge to organize. It’s coming together nicely, however.”

This year’s race takes place on July 28. Registration deadline is July 25. Registration forms can be found at and dropped off to Icycle Sports and Cadence Cycle.
