Meaning, Memory and the Tragically Hip A bout four months ago I stood in stunned silence and listened to Ross Mercer’s Tragically Hip theory.

To paraphrase: The Tragically Hip revels in their Canadiana because they are not good enough to make a splash on the international scene. Furthermore, we gladly swallow such pandering because we are often happier to applaud self-aggrandizing mediocrity than true excellence.

It’s an uncomfortable argument, made more uncomfortable

by Ross’s history as a world-record holding snowmobiler, which forced me to grant him a certain gravitas with regards to the “mediocrity vs. excellence” issue.

It burned.

For me, the Hip is one of those bands that illustrate the degree to which music and memory can fuse together.

I bought Road Apples (1991) when I was 17 and from the moment I heard the meat n’ potatoes guitar intro on “Little Bones” I was hooked — quickly adding Up to Here (1989), Fully Completely (1992), Day for Night (1994), Trouble at the Henhouse (1996), and Phantom Power (1998) to my CD collection.

Now, whenever “Ahead by a Century” or “Courage” comes on the radio I am transported nostalgically to that three-or-four year period at the turn of the millennium when I was — frankly — obsessed with the Tragically Hip. So, against my better judgment, I didn’t just accept Ross’s argument as a piece of music criticism, I took it as a personal affront; he wasn’t just talking about a band, but also the soundtrack of my transition to adulthood.

I had always accepted the prevailing wisdom re: the Hip’s inability to crack the U.S. market.

The official story goes that they have never made it big in the States because their music touches on something quintessentially Canadian, something Americans will never understand en masse.

The story never goes that they haven’t made waves in America because they kind of suck — until Ross asserted it to be so.

I stewed about it.

From the moment I heard the guitar intro on “Little Bones” I was hooked on the Hip. I listened to all my old CDs and asked myself if my enthusiasm for the Hip was well-earned or whether I had just been duped by a misguided sense of musical patriotism.

After some research I still have no idea what the answer is; I’m too entwined with the subject matter to render an impartial verdict.

But I’ve decided that whether they suck or not, I’m going to love the Tragically Hip anyway.

But before I leave it at that, I want to draw your attention to one verse in one song.

The 11th track on Road Apples is a down-tempo little ditty called “Fiddler’s Green,” about the loss of a young son and the mother who survives him.

Here’s the second verse: His tiny knotted heart Well I guess it never worked too good The timber tore apart And the water gorged the wood You can hear her whispered prayer For men at masts that always lean That the same wind that moves her hair Moves her boy through Fiddler’s Green This verse is as precise and powerful in its poetic economy as any set of rock ‘n’ roll lyrics I have encountered. If nothing else, Mr. Mercer, grant me that these eight lines are truly, truly excellent.

Art show in Carcross celebrates the dunes and protests development

wo weeks ago, battling wind that whipped sand across their faces and canvases, a group of 15 artists hunkered down in the Carcross sand dunes to document the area’s beauty.

Another 35 or so folks spent the afternoon there, too, strolling through the dunes and checking out the rare plants and insects that inhabit the dessert-like place.

This arty sit-in and walk-about was organized by Daphne Mennell, who has lived in Carcross for 40 years. She and others are concerned that the fragile ecosystem of the dunes will be destroyed when the Carcross-Tagish First Nation develops part of the area into waterfront properties.

The five-hour visit to the desert on July 7 resulted in a collection of artworks called Artists’ Day on the Dunes, which will be exhibited at the Wolf House gallery in Carcross starting on July 18.

For the artists, painting the beauty before them was not easy.

The dunes are a fierce subject.

“You have to find a protected spot – you’re dealing with sand, you’re dealing with blowing, with trying to keep your easel up, with trying to stay warm,” Mennell says. “It was very challenging because of the wind.”

But it’s the wind that shapes the dunes and keeps their ecosystem in balance. It’s recognized to be a fragile place, and some areas of it are protected. Mennell would like to see it all protected.

“It’s been a source of inspiration and comfort to me, to have those dunes there,” Mennell says.

“I have no vested interest, I just love the place. That’s all.”

Whitehorse resident Kelsey Eliasson is showing the artworks from the day at the dunes in his newly opened gallery space Wolf House, which he accidentally aquired in June.

“I stopped in to Carcross for a coffee, and left with a gallery,” he says.

Having only been in Carcross for three weeks, he doesn’t have an opinion on the development, though.

Rather, he is a believer in documenting the beauty of the dunes.

“It’s our first show and we’re pretty excited about it,” Eliasson says. “And I think it’s an awesome cause — to record a place through art — and I think it should be done more, because we lose a lot of places.

“Whether it’s developed or not, you need to have a visual record to preserve what the dunes were.

It’s not up to me to say who’s right or wrong, but if they’re developed then this is a great way to hold the memory. And yeah – I had a blank wall (to hang the show).”

The day at the dunes attracted nearly 50 people, and Mennell estimates that approximately 15 to 20 of them were Carcross residents — though none of them were members of the Carcross/

Parks Open Some Dawson Doors for the Summer Warehouse, Billy Bigg’s Blacksmith Shop and the Red Feather Saloon (a reconstruction rather than an original).

Word is that a variety of doors will be opened on a rotational basis this summer. It will be a different one each day from 1 to 3 p.m., so the program could easily go for a week without repeating itself. The Visitors Information Centre on Front Street will have those details. This is in addition to the buildings that are open regularly: the showcase Commissioner’s Residence, Robert Service’s Cabin, the Palace Grand Theatre and

the photo display at Harrington’s Store, called Dawson as They Saw It. I like this open building idea a lot. I’ve enjoyed each of the three Doors Open events I’ve attended.

It adds to the impact of the place to see the old printing equipment in the Dawson Daily News building and see just how small and thin-walled the rooms were in the brothel known as Ruby’s Place.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

n an increasingly slender budget Parks Canada attempts to preserve quite a bit of real estate in Dawson City.

A lot of it is still intact due to the efforts of local business owner Fred Caley.

The recent acquisition of the CIBC building by the City of Dawson was the end of a decadeslong struggle to save a building that has already been graced by a National Historic Sites and Monuments Board plaque.

Nevertheless, it’s a fair complaint, often heard, that many of the buildings owned by Parks are

external shells only, and that the most one can see of their original uses are the tasteful window displays.

Parks has lacked the resources — some would say the imagination — to bring buildings like Billy Biggs Blacksmith Shop or the Dawson Daily News into the sort of productive life that the Dawson City Arts Society gave to the moldering Odd Fellows Hall.

The Old Post Office was used as a summer mail drop, but Canada Post and Parks have since fallen out over that contract. That’s a shame, because that was a per-

fect use for the grand old edifice just down the street from the far less imposing modern building.

From time to time Parks has had Doors Open events when folks are permitted to wander around with the aid of a guide and see what’s behind the facades.

We had such an event during the Gold Show weekend in May when six buildings, five owned by Parks, were opened to the public.

The Masons allowed entry to the Masonic Lodge (originally the Carnegie Library) while Parks opened the Old Post Office, the Northern Commercial Company

lice and Arthur John of Ross River started their marriage in the traditional Dena way — their families arranged it.

“Mom said she was about 15-years-old when they first started going together (in 1932),” says daughter Dorothy John. “Most of the First Nations marriages were arranged at the time.

Then in (October of) 1935 they got married in the Anglican Church at Fort Selkirk because my mom’s parents wanted to make it legal.”

While working their trap line that winter, a travelling Roman Catholic priest also blessed their marriage.

Seventy-seven years later, Worldwide Marriage Encounter Canada (WWME), a faith-based marriage enrichment organization, declared them the longest married couple in the country.

“When I saw an article in the B.C. Catholic magazine about Worldwide Marriage Encounter’s search, I notified them about this amazing couple,” says Irene Morin, who works at St. Michael’s Church in Ross River with her husband.

“She’s 96 and she’s deaf but she reads lips,” says Morin.

“He’s 102 and blind but he can hear. And so even at this late stage in their life, they complement each other.”

Daughter Dorothy agrees, and traces this continued partnership to the beginning of their marriage.

So we try to kind of shed some light on the other side of it, that there’s lots of laughter and lots of dancing and lots of very strong community values here.”

With those goals in mind, The Jerry Cans plan to continue playing around Nunavut and gradually increase their range; their next big show Outside will be Greenland in August, followed by a music festival in Quebec.

They will also be recording a new album, the follow up to their debut, Nunavuttitut, in November.

ver been asked if you live in an igloo? Or ride a polar bear? For us Northerners, it can happen. Just ask Andrew Morrison, guitarist/ vocalist for Iqaluit-based, country-folk band The Jerry Cans.

“I think [for] Northerners, there’s some kind of pan-northern experience of southerners really just getting it wrong sometimes,” he says. “We always have good laughs, sharing stories all about heading down south and some of the questions we get asked about living up North.”

Over the last few months, the five-piece group has ventured out of their home territory to play in Toronto in February and Northern Scene in Ottawa in May; and they will be playing at this year’s Dawson City Music Festival (DCMF), July 19-21.

The Jerry Cans enjoyed a good reception at each of their southern performances, though some of their themes were lost in translation, as their lyrics are 90 percent Inuktitut, the

native language of Nunavut.

“Things that might be kind of funny up North, especially jokes that go over well in Inuktitut don’t go over well in English, like jokes about eating seal meat...” Morrison says.

Sometimes the lyrics are lost even on young people in Nunavut – those who don’t speak the language.

“We’re very passionate about encouraging young people, if they don’t speak or if they’re shy to speak, to try to make an effort to be proud of learning or knowing Inuktitut,” he says.

They’ve come a long way since their formation as a garage-rock band.

“We grew up in Iqaluit and started playing in the garage way back in the day doing cover music, and then we started doing more Inuktitut music when my girlfriend, Nancy [Mike, a throat-singer], joined the band,” Morrison says.

“It’s kind of a strange music-type because we mix in country music and jigging and square dancing,

with throat-singing and a little bit of reggae, which is a really weird mix.”

The Jerry Cans are very excited to play DCMF, alongside acts like Al Simmons, The Soujourners, The Beauties, Daniel Romano and local artists like Vision Quest and Old Cabin. Morrison also expects to find kindred souls among the audience.

“We hope [our music] just kind of informs people a little more about what modern life in Nunavut is... it’s nice to play to Northern audiences because they often encounter those stereotypes as well... so I think there’s a certain level of comfort, going to Northern places.”

For The Jerry Cans, playing in the North is also a priority because many of the smaller communities, particularly in Nunavut and the NWT, have little to no live music for most of the year.

That said, they do love to travel elsewhere, and hope to act as musical ambassadors for the North, bringing the knowledge of

their language and culture to the south, as well as debunking misconceptions about the North.

“I think, first off, there’s lots of other media outlets representing the North [in a negative way], like The Globe and Mail, The Post,” Morrison says. “You see lots of negative representations of Nuna-

T

his eagle has been hanging out in front of what’s turned into our favorite place in the Yukon: Morley Bay. We’ve always wondered if animals have clumsy accidents in the wild. They do. We watched this eagle steal a fish from some seagulls and then go land on a branch of a very dead tree. The branch snapped under the weight of the bird, it went plummeting to the ground and was able to recover just an instant before hitting the ground. It managed to keep the fish.

Puffballs, Boletes, Meadow Mushrooms, Oh My! Mushroom hunting in the Yukon is a harvesting opportunity

C

ontrary to popular belief, mushroom hunting does not have the risk factor of Russian roulette. In fact, with a little knowledge and some common sense, it can be safer than many other hunts.

I’ve met many Yukoners who forage avidly for berries and wild greens but draw the line at mushrooms, exhibiting symptoms of the fungophobia that is ubiquitous on this continent. It is true that there are poisonous and even deadly mushrooms, but the Yukon’s extremes of dry and cold give us the advantage of lower diversity and hence easier identification than our southern or coastal neighbours. As with any new food, go easy: the first time you try a new type of mushroom enjoy it in small amounts. Everyone’s body has its own sensitivities.

Mushrooms are the reproductive part of a fungus, the rest of which is made up of mycelia: long threadlike structures that run

throughout the substrate upon which it feeds. This could be a tree, a rotting log, or a pile of compost — some even stretch for kilometres through the soil. Like a short-lived flower, a mushroom is ephemeral and mushroom hunters must be ever-vigilant.

My edible mushroom calendar for the Yukon focuses on puffballs in June, meadow and horse mushrooms in July, and boletes in August (earlier ones are often wormy).

Puffballs are spherical white mushrooms with no stem, boletes are distinguished by pores instead of gills on the underside of the cap and can be many colours, and meadow and horse mushrooms look similar to the button mushrooms from the store, though bigger. It is important to use a guidebook to identify mushrooms. Not all are edible.

A recent taste extravaganza compels me to wax lyrical on the puffball.

Puffballs have a delicious earthy flavour and an amazing texture — a cross between a marshmallow and silken tofu. I find them in open, dry environments, and while I haven’t harvested the head-size whoppers boasted of down south, I have been thrilled to discover specimens six inches across.

The trick with puffballs is timing. They should be firm, and pure white inside. Older mushrooms may become spongy from burrowing beetles and larvae — still edible, though less palatable.

Once the inside of a puffball begins to turn colour however, leave them for the squirrels.

This happens as spores are produced and mature, eventually filling the skin like a balloon, until “pop” — a drift of cocoa powder hovers above the meadow.

So arm yourself with a good guidebook, don’t eat anything that tastes or smells foul, and practice your mushroom call.

Grilled Puffballs Marinade:

Juice of one lemon, 2 cloves of garlic (crushed), ¼ c olive oil, salt and pepper to taste.

For an extra Yukon twist, use homemade raspberry vinegar instead of the lemon juice.

METHOD Slice mushrooms* into 1 cm slabs and marinate for at least three hours. Grill on the barbeque or over an open fire until browned, brushing frequently with marinade. Any large meadow and horse mushrooms may be treated the same way. *A note that the skin of puffballs may cause stomach irritation for some, though I have eaten many unpeeled.

A Guide to Good Laughs Dissecting the Whitehorse comedy scene

ired of doing the old smileand-nod routine because your boss thinks he’s Jerry Seinfeld?

Experience some real comedy in Whitehorse.

Anthony Trombetta, Jenny Hamilton, and George Maratos, three veterans of the local comedy scene, guide us through the main comedy venues in Yukon’s capital.

Jarvis Street Saloon

Whitehorse’s most regular venue, The Jarvis Street Saloon (a.k.a. the 202) hosts an open-mic comedy night every second Thursday.

It offers a rugged comedy experience.

“The 202 can be a bit of a challenging venue because not everyone’s there for the comedy, so from a comedian’s perspective it can be a bit daunting,” says Maratos. “They’re not always listening and sometimes they’re talking loud over you. But I kinda like it — it builds a tough skin.”

Hamilton agrees.

“It’s a different experience than when people have come to actually see you,” she says. “If you can catch their attention

“We’ve had some epic, epic nights at the 202,” says Trombetta. “We get to work some new stuff out, or re-work old bits. It’s like our only comedy gym, and nobody’s paying anything so there’s no skin off the audience.”

The venue itself offers a large space with a big stage. The free laughs start at 9 p.m.

If you’ve got jokes you’re welcome to get up and show your stuff. If you don’t have jokes but still want on stage, comedy is followed by karaoke at 11 p.m.

The next show is July 18, followed by August 1.

The Guild Hall

Perhaps the closest thing Whitehorse has to an actual comedy club, The Guild Hall likes to host once per month.

The Guild’s theatre vibe is reflected in the venue itself, the comedy routines, and the audience.

Shows tend to be tighter, while leaving room for something different.

Trombetta, Hamilton and Maratos all admit bias toward The Guild: Trombetta is the current president, Hamilton the manager, and Maratos has been on the board. However, it’s a bias that has come from doing time there – on stage as well as behind the scenes.

“People will have tried, true and tested material,” says Trombetta. “But because it’s a theatre, people will do some experimental stuff sometimes. Like some weird character comedy.”

“It’s a learning venue,” says Hamilton. “We encourage the newbie’s to come up here before they want to play downtown or somewhere else. We call it a soft audience or friendlier audience at The Guild. More of a theatre crowd.”

“The Guild’s kind of my second home,” says Maratos. “I’ve been involved in a lot of theatre shows there and I’ve done a lot of comedy there. [The audience] has made the effort to go and are really keen to take it in. I love The Guild.”

The venue is compact, but utilizes the space well. Rows of seats

on an incline all face toward centre stage.

The next comedy show at The Guild Hall will be on Friday, July 26, featuring comedians imported from down south. Shows at The Guild are usually on the third Saturday of each month, but that can change. Tickets are generally $5.

Rah Rah Gallery

There is generally one show per month here. And if you have an infectious laugh they’d love to have you because they film some of the performances. The shows run on community cable 9, with the third episode about to air.

Trombetta runs the show, and acknowledges the camera’s influence on the performances.

“Those shows are a little different, because they are an hour and a really tight show,” Trombetta says. “It’s not open-mic, nobody’s trying any new stuff or being experimental. That one’s pretty much experienced comics.”

The venue is small, and lacks a formal stage, but Trombetta be-

“For the TV tapings it’s actually perfect,” he says. “On TV it gives the impression of a giant, full room. At a bigger venue like Jarvis you’d have to do a lot of work to pack that place.”

“It’s unique in that it’s essentially a coffee shop so it’s quite intimate.” says Maratos. “It’s also paid attendance so you get a real comedy crowd.”

“You learn different things from different sized venues,” says Hamilton. “(At the Rah Rah you can see most of your audience because they are right there in front of you. You get in somewhere like the Arts Centre and it’s just not the same.”

Eye on Dawson

The Midnight News broadcasts live at 12 a.m. on Tuesdays

A

live news program with a twist has hit the cable airwaves in Dawson City. Since June 25, Curtis Collins and Alyssa Friesen have gone live on air every Tuesday at midnight to offer a satirical look at local, national and international events.

Along with musical guests, interviews, stories and a faux commercial, the 30-minute program aims to “conflate” the news and offers a skewed perspective on current events.

It all started when Collins and Friesen went to a community meeting in May to discuss starting a cable TV station in Dawson. After the meeting, Collins and Friesen sat down and brainstormed about programming.

The Midnight News was born.

“We thought it was a great summer idea to do it at midnight as it doesn’t get dark here and nobody sleeps in this town anyway,” says Collins.

Collins, who is director of the Yukon School of Visual Arts (SOVA) and Friesen, who is office manager at the Klondike Sun newspaper, have broadcast journalism and cable TV experience.

Friesen, along with two others, has also recently started a production company, Sternwheel Productions, which, along with SOVA, CFYT 106.9 FM Radio and Dawson City Television, is providing assistance to the program.

After several meetings to nail down the format and the approach to the program, Collins and Friesen brought others on board to help with technical support and floor managing.

“The more people behind the camera the better,” says Collins. “We’ll find roles for everyone.”

They decided to locate the news set on the balcony of SOVA, overlooking a busy

street that includes a popular local nightspot.

“We wanted to mimic the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade, where the presenters sit outside with visuals in the background”, says Curtis. “It’s a beautiful look and a cool shot.”

There are occasional disturbances from the street, even on a quiet Tuesday night, but Collins says that whatever happens, they roll with it.

Just before the broadcast, the crew sets up. There is a run through for the presenters and cameras at 11 p.m., and at 11:30 the guests arrive. At midnight, the show begins.

Wednesday is a sleep-in day, and on Thursday, the whole crew meets to analyse what went right and wrong.

“It’s a lot of work,” says Friesen. “At 15 hours per week, it’s almost like a part-time job.”

“That doesn’t pay,” pipes in Collins.

These two enjoy playing off each other.

As presenters, Friesen is the straight man and Collins is the comic relief.

“He needs to be tied to his chair,” says Friesen. “He moves around a lot.”

“It’s a mix of serious and ridiculous in varying proportions,” says Collins.

Collins and Friesen are hoping to put eight to 10 episodes on the air and finish off in September. But there is already talk of returning during the winter.

“We’re thinking of doing an Al-Qaeda Christmas special,” says Collins.

The Yukon Brewing Company recently became the WH4’s sponsor, although “hares” have been hiding the popular local beer along the trail for years.

T

hey are a drinking club that runs, and they’ve got comrades around the world. They are the Whitehorse Hash House Harriers (WH4).

The original Hash House Harriers got their start in Malaysia just before World War II, combating boredom among British troops.

Now, there are nearly 2,000 “kennels” around the world – including the one in Whitehorse.

And everyone goes by a nickname.

“Nicknames on the hash are called ‘hash handles’ – as opposed to your ‘nerd names,’” explains Softwood, the WH4’s co-founder.

Softwood got the Whitehorse kennel going in 2007.

“A woman up here asked me if I knew anything about this hashing thing,” Softwood says. “I’d lived in South East Asia, so I’d heard of it.”

His partner in crime left the group to raise a family, but Softwood continued to organize events.

ahead while the “hounds” chase them.

To throw the pack off their scent, hares leave distractions on the trail, usually in the form of beer.

“But you never really know what you’ll find on the trail,” says Softwood. “Once, someone left a bottle of Baby Duck in the winter.

And Fireball is popular.”

The hare is in charge of picking the secret location of a run.

“You never know what the hare will do,” Softwood says. “We’ve bussed people across town and they run back – an A to B run.

Sometimes we do a live run where hares only leave 15 minutes ahead of the pack.

“Once I and a friend only had a five-minute head start,” Softwood says. “We’re pretty quick, but we still planned ahead. I almost got caught, but luckily I had a 6-pack of beer in my backpack –that slowed them down!”

“This is so that walkers can catch up and everyone finishes at the same time,” Softwood says.

“It’s a social club: no racing allowed.

“Traditionally, you’ll also have an FRB – a Front Running Bastard – with a horn who calls the pack on. But we broke the horn and we haven’t gotten around to getting a new one.”

This relaxed mentality is typical of the hashers, who are a pretty anti-establishment group. Even so, they follow worldwide traditions.

Monday, for example, is the usual “hashing” night, and at 7 p.m. anywhere between three and 30 people will meet at the secret location.

By October, this means they are usually running with headlamps.

Once the snow comes, the traditional flour trail markings are not effective either.

“Sometimes we’ll put a bit of cherry Kool-Aid in the flour or use Cheesies to mark the trail,”

says Softwood. “The problem with Cheesies is that dogs tend to eat them. Then you get lost.”

They still head out in full-blown winter, but they take it a bit easier – they’re not crazy.

“We only go about once a month in the winter,” says Softwood. “And the beer checks are pretty short.”

Wintertime is when they do their annual charity Red Dress Run to raise money and awareness around prostate cancer during the Movember campaign.

“Last year it was about -30°C, so that was a bit of a challenge,” says Softwood. “But my dress is pretty big, so I can wear warm clothes underneath.”

To join the HHH, your best bet is to know a hasher who can bring you as a guest.

While Softwood says anonymity is treasured in the group – “hash handles are used to protect the innocent!” – it is still relatively easy

What to Have in a First Aid Kit Y ou’ll never be sorry for carrying a basic First Aid kit with you on your outdoor adventures.

Kits are available ready-made, but they are expensive and often include something you’ll never need – and are missing something necessary.

Having the First Aid kit is vital, but training is essential and available locally.

You and your group of outdoor pals can sign up for training during the winter when we’re all looking for something to do. A refresher course may be appropriate because methods and procedures are always changing.

Nevertheless, a satellite phone is a good idea should a severe situation arise.

To assemble your own First Aid kit, start off with an appropriately-sized waterproof container such as Tupperware, a camera case or other O-ring equipped box. A water-proof bag or double Zip-Loc bags will also work in a soft container. Whatever container you use, mark it clearly as “FIRST AID” so others in your group can locate it if you are absent or hurt.

Your kit may be different from others because of allergies or special medical needs. Any daily use medication should be carried in a separate container with your own personal gear. All kits should include a small soft cover First-Aid manual.

I also have a smaller kit for sheep-hunting or any other minimal-weight outing.

For this I used two medium sized plastic peanut butter jars with screw-off lids. Into these tough, water-proof jars I put a minimal amount (enough for the length of a trip) of most of the above listed materials.

This has allowed me to keep the weight to a minimum while having enough of the various First Aid articles to get me through any situation that might arise.

Everyone is welcome to attend this growing event, and lots do.

Two years ago, the last time Teslin Tlingit Council hosted Hà Kus Teyea, 4,000 people attended the feast. And the celebrations keep developing and growing.

Events and activities include daily cultural demonstrations like fish smoking, Chilkat weaving and beadwork; workshops in cedar weaving, trap making, tradition tool and fish trap building, soapberry spoon crafting, paddle making and watercolour painting.

There will also be a significant gathering of dancers, singers and storytellers from the Yukon, Alaska and British Columbia.

Artists involved in the dancer circle include Marilyn Jensen Yadultin and William Wasden Jr. Marilyn Jensen Yadultin, is an Inland Tlingit and Tagish Khwáan drummer from the Carcross/Tagish First Nation belonging to the Dakhl’aweidí Clan under the Tagish Keét Hít (Killerwhale House).

uring early land claim negotiations, respected Teslin elder Virginia Smarch once said of her Tlingit community, “that is who we are: part of the land, part of the water.”

This uplifting statement is echoed in the events, feasts, performances and workshops planned for this year’s bi-annual Hà Kus Teyea celebration, hosted by Teslin Tlingit Council on July 26 to 28 at the Teslin Heritage Centre.

Ha Kus Teyea in Tlingit language means “our culture” or literally, the “Tlingit way.”

For generations, Teslin Tlingit have met with relatives and friends in the summer months to celebrate, feast, exchange gifts, dance, tell stories, meet the newborn, engage in courtship, share news and strengthen community ties.

Since colonialism, and the imposition of borders between the Yukon and Alaska, these gatherings have had a heightened importance as a time and place to restore and respect traditions, pass on skills, and keep the language and ways of ancestors alive.

In 2009, Sharon Shorty — whose heritage is Tlingit of the Raven Clan, Northern Tutchone, and Norwegian — coordinated a 10-day Hà Kus Teayea event that was partly inspired by gatherings of the Juneau Tlingit and partly by the less formalized Hà Kus Teyea celebrations in the Yukon that had been resurfacing since the 1980’s.

For the 2009 Teslin celebration, the Juneau Tlingit brought 900 pounds of salmon, and the Teslin Tlingit provided five moose for food and hides for the workshops and demonstrations.

Since 2009, the celebration has rotated between hosts Carcross/ Tagish First Nation, the Taku River Tlingit First Nation and Teslin Tlingit Council (TTC). But the collaborative spirit is not limited to this annual rotation.

This year, there will be three feasts over the weekend — Carcross/Tagish First Nation hosts the feast on the Friday, Taku River Tlingit First Nation hosts on Saturday, and Teslin Tlingit Council will host the closing feast on Sunday, which also happens to be National Tlingit Day. Bring your own plate, bowl and cutlery.
