I

t’s not on the way to anywhere.

It’s a world removed from the fast food congestion of 2nd and the self-conscious business of 4th.

And it has nothing in common with the arrogance of 6th.

You just want to wipe the smirk of the face of 6th Avenue when it says, “I can get you all the way from

Whitehorse Beverages to Main Street lickity-split; No red lights, no interruptions.”

The others are even, but 7th is odd.

It lurks in the shadow of the clay cliffs, with yield signs as far as the eye can see. The sheer 7thness of it seeps into your bones.

But it has its charms.

If you want to smoke a cigarette, but you don’t want anyone

to see you smoke a cigarette, 7th is the place to be.

If you want to get in a bit of road hockey after dinner, you can do a lot worse.

And brother, if you want to dance, you can dance on 7th Avenue.

Who’s going to stop you?

I perch on the corner of Wood and 7th and plan to count the cars as they pass.

But none come.

It’s local traffic only in these parts.

So here I stand, a fire hydrant to my left and a graveyard to my right.

I suspect 7th Ave finds comforting companionship amongst the dead.

E

rin Stevens’ ten-year plan is to run the Yukon Quest.

And she knows by that time she’ll have an entirely new compilation of dogs.

Her six current dogs are from Deb Knight; whom Stevens handled for a few winters ago. She says it’s not hard to get a group of B-team dogs.

Stevens lives in a cabin at the base of Bear Mountain, about twenty kilometres down Annie Lake Road, south of Whitehorse.

She wants to get some miles on her dogs; she spreads her arms and says, “Here, we have hundreds of miles.�

Her dogs are Alaskan huskies, which is a husky crossed with whatever kind of dog wants to run. In the winter the dogs go nuts when she pulls out the sled harnesses; Stevens says it’s the same thing in the summer when they hear the bear bells — they know they’re going to put some miles in.

Stevens attaches them to her bike with skijouring gear and takes them for long runs, interrupted by swims.

In the summer, husky mutts turn into hot dogs if a musher isn’t careful. Stevens says she avoids touring in mid-day, and always works a stream or lake into their route.

Huskies are built for running — that’s why they love it. But dogs have personalities, and Stevens says it’s her job to understand how the different dog traits fit into the team. “I’m the pack leader. In theory.�

Stevens’ authority comes from time and miles; the dogs have to trust her, and respect her and she has to put her team in unfamiliar situations and lead them safely through.

Stevens to get to know different sides of her dogs. She sees which dogs are squirrel dogs, which water are water dogs, and which aren’t.

Bria, a lead dog, lost an argument with the resident porcupine and ended up with 500 quills and a busted-up shoulder. Vader, another lead dog, won’t leave Stevens’ side.

The dogs are sleek, unlike other huskies in the summer, who get mangy. Stevens says she puts in time brushing the winter fur out of her dogs’ coats. In fact, Stevens puts most of her time into her pack; she doesn’t leave them alone for more than 12 hours, running them every day.

She also pays for vet fees, harnesses, leashes and food. She’s getting kennels built on her new place.

Sometimes she feels like she’s missing out, when she has to leave friends to attend to her dogs. But, she says what she gets out of her dogs is worth it: “You get to hang out with dogs all day and cruise the Yukon. How awesome is that?�

In the summer, Hogan is busy selling her soap in Whitehorse at

aking soap is magical; how do all the liquid ingredients turn into a solid bar of soap? Joella Hogan has the answer.

She is the owner of the Essential Soap Bar Co. in Mayo. Hogan bought the business two years ago and learned how to make soap from the former owner.

Upon entering her house, one can smell the sweet and earthy scent of her product, which Hogan makes in the basement.

“To make the soap I mix the soft and hard oils together, melt them and blend it in a lye solution,” she explains.

“The finished soap has to sit for four to six weeks to cure; a chemical process called saponification.

Saponification is a chemical reaction that occurs when fat and oil come in contact with lye.”

Hogan says she gathers flowers, like wild rose petals and fireweed.

She dries them to add to the soap.

Her biggest challenge is running out of ingredients that she can’t buy in Mayo. She has to buy them online, or in Whitehorse.

“Soap-making is my second business, I do it after work or on the weekends,” Hogan says.

Hogan is the manager for Heritage and Culture of the Nacho Nyak Dun First Nation.

“After a busy day, I turn on music and enjoy making soap.

I like that I can be creative and play around with different colors and forms.”

It’s a lot of work, but she has help.

“My mom helps me a lot with selling the soap, and I have volunteers and family members who are helping me. I couldn’t do it without them.”

Visitors are always welcome to call her, or to buy the soap directly from her basement.

“I like to show people around, to tell them about the soap, so they can see where it’s coming from.”

“For the Mayo Arts in the Park at Aboriginal Day, I created soapcupcakes and soap in the shape of pieces of pie. But I also had a booth with my usual soap, for example the Yukon wild rose soap,” Joella says.

“I am still learning and doing research about soap making on the Internet. And I always look at the work of other soap makers and the newest trends to get inspiration.”

Hogan’s also inspired by her surroundings: “I have soap with silver dust on it, and I like that my business is related to Mayo and its history.

Norma Rae fights the good fight

The forthright friendship between Reuben and Norma Rae provides much of the momentum for the film, as they bury their mutual admiration in wisecracks and expand each other’s horizons.

Ron Leibman is funny and passionate as Reuben; he speaks eloquently about solidarity but doesn’t know how to change a tire.

It’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship and in due time Norma Rae directs her kvetching towards unionizing the mill.

In the late 1970s a small band of Hollywood stalwarts poured energy into this entertaining and engaging movie with an offbeat, female character, which focused on an issue that wasn’t likely to make it a commercial success.

The original screenplay, written by Harriet Frank, Jr. and Irving Ravetch, is based on the true story of Crystal Lee Sutton, who was instrumental in unionizing the cotton industry in North Carolina.

erhaps you do not sing well, or enjoy singing, but nearly anyone can squeak out a tune when inspired.

In the same way, your intuition may not be well developed, but like your voice, it can be honed and strengthened with intention, attention and training.

Intuition is the act of knowing something without conscious reasoning. This also describes the art of parenting, falling in love, and our basic survival instincts. In essence, intuition is a life skill.

When we say “I feel it in my bones”, “my gut told me to get out of there”, “she made my skin crawl”, or “I can’t stomach it” – we are expressing body-felt intuition.

Our bodies physically express what is occurring on emotional, mental, energetic, or spiritual levels.

Consciously, we may be unaware of what that experience is, but our body is aware, and that is how we can know things subconsciously.

Given that our bodies are constantly receiving, interpreting, and organizing responses to our experiences, it isn’t difficult to reason that experiences can also be stored in our bodies, like memories — especially repetitive or traumatic experiences.

Blocks change or misdirect the flow of energy in bodies. They create imbalances in organ systems, and lead to dis-ease. Blocks can be deep-rooted; they may be integrated with other parts of the body, or even with other people in our lives.

This is well documented in traditional Chinese medicine, and I have noticed it in my own practice.

How do we identify the blocks

within our bodies? We can either seek professional help, or learn to trust our intuition.

We have a feeling when something is not right in our bodies.

Pay attention to this, and do not let anyone convince you otherwise. Make time to listen to your body through meditation, or look up Eugene Gendlin for exercises on how to look more deeply into your own body.

If you are not the do-it-yourself type, there are a number of holistic health practitioners who can help. I practice a form of medical intuition that helps identify physical and emotional links to symptoms or illness. Many other talented practitioners can be found on the Yukon Wholistic Health Network at www. ywhn. org.

Taking charge of our health involves more than just learning about ourselves from outside sources. Our own body is an indispensable source of wisdom, and will return us more rapidly to health if we listen to the inner voice.

s far as I know, electronic gadgetry hasn’t affected the humble hot dog. Having said that, I’m confident that somewhere out there there is a new gizmo guaranteed to make the perfect tube-steak.

Making a hot dog can be a very simple operation, and that’s probably why it is so popular with very young children; If you can keep them from falling into the fire, or poking their siblings in tender spots with the wiener stick, you’ve got it made.

The simplest approach is to use a thin-pointed, forked stick; a fire, and a choice of condiments.

If held in the flames, the wiener chars or the stick burns through, letting the main-course fall into the fire, leading to tearful exclamations from young chefs. A safer/better approach is a “keyhole� fire, where coals are pulled from the main fire. Another safe choice is metal wiener sticks, with the two points bent backward towards the hand. These are unlikely to cause injuries, like forwardpointing tips can, but are just as simple to use.

was on vacation with my family in southern Quebec when I opened an e-mail from Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Up Yukon editor Peter Jickling asking me if I had any â&#x20AC;&#x153;hot dogâ&#x20AC;? stories for the magazine.

It occurred to me that other than eating them over the years I had no stories of any value. Once I burnt my nostril biting into a boiled cheese smokie, but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about it.

As I was about to politely decline, it hit me â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in Quebec, home of le Casse-Croute, and my fellow Yukoners are reaching out to me.

A Casse-Croute is Quebecâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s version of a greasy spoon, where you can find some of the best homegrown comfort food around.

I knew what had to be done; I needed to go on a wild hot dog eating spree to educate my adoring fans. Vacation or not, I had a job to do.

The plan was simple: go to Main Street in the city of Magog and eat a hot dog at every restaurant on the strip.

My first stop was just off the highway at Valentines, which serves cheap fried food. I ordered a steamed dog and watched intently as a greasy teen with a huge hairnet prepared it. When he handed it to me, it was sad.

The bun looked like it was fused to the meat. Coyly I asked him where they get their wieners; the greasy teen smiled and said it was a mystery â&#x20AC;&#x201D; classic!

I closed my eyes, ate the mystery meat and headed toward brighter wiener pastures.

Next I hit Le Cantine du Lac, a traditional Casse-Croute that was clean and welcoming.

I ordered a toasted dog with all the fixings. The waitress obliged and within minutes I had a hot, meaty treat in front of me.

I literally licked my lips as steam rolled off the dog. This time I slowly chewed and savoured it before moving on.

As I strolled down Main Street I came upon Tabagie Label, a magazine store that has been a mainstay in Magog for generations. It also has a little restaurant counter with old fashion stools, giving the place a cool retro look.

My father told me when he was a kid, his dad would order dogs there and they would cook them in a boiler-like contraption that would make the wieners come out plump and juicy. Unfortunately the diner was closed for the day, crushing my meaty spirits.

I was not to be deterred; a short walk away was Chez Paul, possibly the most famous Cass Croute in Magog. Located in a perfect storm of bars and businesses, Chez Paul offers poutine that would make your arm hair stand up.

ational Hot Dog day arrives July 23 and you may ask: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why does the hot dog deserve a national day?â&#x20AC;?

The answer is 200-years-old with influences from over twodozen cultures.

We are all familiar with the traditional â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;ball park dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, after all, summer would not be complete without a barbeque session dedicated to these tasty snacks.

However, what you may not know are the nitty-gritty tidbits that helped hot dogs shoot to fame.

The hot dog, as we Canadians know and love it, originated in Germany. These delectable pork sausages were churned out for royalty during coronation ceremonies as early as the 13th century.

What we now call Germany was part of the Holy Roman Empire, with Vienna as the capital.

Translate Vienna to German, and you get â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wienâ&#x20AC;?, thus marrying the name â&#x20AC;&#x153;wienerâ&#x20AC;? to the sausage.

Fast forward a few hundred years â&#x20AC;&#x201D; beef is added to the mixture, and given the name frankfurter, after the German city of

Frankfurt, which is said to be the birthplace of this variation.

It was not until the late 1800s that the frankfurter began to be served with a bun. Who specifically started this new way of serving hot dogs is debatable. What remains a fact is that they began to surface across the USA, and by the 1920s were in full circulation.

But where did the name â&#x20AC;&#x153;hot dogâ&#x20AC;? come from?

Throughout the late 1800s â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; was a common name for any sausage product, as it was speculated, but never proven, that sausages contained dog meat. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hotâ&#x20AC;? was added, simply because you had to heat it before consumption; thus, hot dog.

With its dubious past behind, the hot dog began to increase in popularity after World War II. And its popularity stretches way past North America.

In many Asian countries, sausages are served baked into dumpling-like dough. In Japan, they are made in the form of a seafood sausage and served with seaweed and sashimi.

In the Netherlands, they com-

bine pizza with hot dogs. A variety of typical pizza toppings are tossed on top of the dog, which is dubbed â&#x20AC;&#x153;the stoner dogâ&#x20AC;?.

Sweden has a very vibrant edition. They use wieners made with bologna, stick them on flat bread, add mashed potatoes, green mayo, mustard, and shrimp salad.

In Brazil Items such as eggs, peppers, chips, onions, and peas are used for garnish.

In Columbia, crumbled cheese and pineapple add an exotic flavour to hot dogs, while in Chile, tomatoes, guacamole, and mayo help create their version of the hot dog.

Lots of great flavours from a simple food with a questionable yet vivid history.

On July 23, and indeed throughout July, which is Hot Dog Month, embrace the wiener spirit by eating a hot dog â&#x20AC;&#x201D; either plain-andsimple, fully-loaded, or as your own creation.

f you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like hot dogs, hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an Internet trend you want to avoid: â&#x20AC;&#x153;hot dogs or legs.â&#x20AC;?

People take photos of their bent legs from the knee to mid-thigh in a manner that looks like a couple of hot dogs looking out over the landscape, usually a beach scene where oily, bare, hot dog-like legs are likely to be found.

I object to these photos because of the cumulative effect of first comparing the naked, fleshy human body to an item that has come to symbolize gluttony and obesity, then thinking it should be photographed, then believing the whole world might like to see it on the internet. How could one not despair for humanity?

To clarify, this is not an anti-hot dog story. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m down with the dog â&#x20AC;&#x201D; up with the pup. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve watched the video on how hot dogs are made by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m drinking their Kool Aid and eating their 100 per cent all meat wieners.

Most hot dogs are apparently made with â&#x20AC;&#x153;trimmingsâ&#x20AC;? or pieces of meat too small to be packaged. Fewer hot dogs now than in the past are made using â&#x20AC;&#x153;variety meatsâ&#x20AC;?, which must be labelled as such.

Frankly (hee hee), I rather like the taste of hot dogs. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d hazard that the majority of people that say they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like the taste are either lying or have some remain-

ing trauma associated with middle school sports day.

Others are opposed to certain aspects of hot dogs on aesthetic or moral grounds. Vegans and vegetarians, you get a free pass on this one.

There are two main things that I object to about hot dogs: First, imagine the most uninspired hot dog possible â&#x20AC;&#x201D; probably the pink, individuallywrapped, bulk variety of my childhood â&#x20AC;&#x201D; boiled, topped with one line of ketchup, and handed out by my similarly generic, pinkish grade one teacher.

When you consider this particular culinary experience, the worst thing about it is not the boiling, not the ketchup, not the low quality of the dog, but the bun â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the dry, white, tasteless, and nutritionally useless piece of carb.

Even the professionals see the bun as an impediment; competitive hot dog eaters dunk the buns in water just to get them down.

Yes, there are good buns out there, but the fact remains that the bun exists primarily to keep your hands clean and as a vessel for the toppings, not for gastronomic benefit.

My second objection to hot dogs lies with the practice of cooking hot dogs into otherwise ordinary recipes, as if they were an actual food item. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not referring to adding gourmet toppings like caramelized onions and feta cheese to hot dogsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; this is just the basic concept gussied up.

I mean hot dog casseroles, hot dogs on pizza, and hot dog omelettes.

The whole point of a hot dog is to be a convenient food eaten with your hands. It offends my sense of practicality and efficiency that an item meant to take mere minutes to assemble from start to finish and is to be eaten standing up is now being chopped, mixed, and baked for 40 minutes at 375°F. Furthermore, all-beef claims notwithstanding, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not pretend that hot dogs should be considered part of a healthy meal.

Cooking them into a dish that is otherwise healthy does not make them healthy. Such Homer Simpsonion logic brought us Ritz cracker mock apple pie, Jell-O salad, and most of the contents of the Kraft recipe box.

Call me a purist, but junk food is not health food, knees are not hot dogs, and may we all preserve the sanctity of the processed animal trimmings.

Why does Dawson Need a Dike?

T

he Yukon Gold Panning Championships were held on the well-used greensward between Front Street and the dike. The greensward wouldn’t be here if the dike wasn’t built.

The dike was a controversial pile of rock and dirt when it was erected in 1987. Many conceded it was necessary, and long overdue.

But no one said it was pretty.

Dawson City is an example of the human tendency to inhabit flood plains; it’s located at the confluence of the Klondike and Yukon rivers, and some parts of town are barely above the level of the groundwater table. It’s no surprise the town has flooded 22 times.

Here, outgoing ice jams downstream from Dawson cause the Yukon River to flood into the town.

“Worst Floods Known Submerge City” was a headline in the Dawson Daily News on May 14, 1925, when a metre of water covered much of the town.

In 1944, another major jam left Dawsonites knee-deep in water.

The Royal Canadian Air Force was called in to bomb the jam, to no avail.

Early attempts to block the rising water always seemed to be too little and too late. Front Street was raised in 1959 to keep the water out, but that proved futile because there were several floods during the 1960s. So the government raised the level of the street again.

The massive 1979 flood proved these efforts were also ineffective. Water cascaded into town to a depth of two metres in some places, running all the way up to Sixth Avenue. It required disaster assistance for some 270 damage claims, worth about $6 million in 2009 dollars.

Hydrologists immediately called for the building of a dike, to

be at least two metres higher that anything previously attempted.

There was a lot of foot dragging around this; there’s no good excuse offered to explain why it took eight years to get it done.

We haven’t flooded since, though I have seen water to within a metre of the top of the dike several times. It’s supposed to be able to handle a 200-year level event, but last summer the water in the Yukon and Klondike rivers was so high that it backed-up in some of the storm drains in the south end of town, creating massive puddles along the streets.

Though the dike wasn’t popular at first, as the landscaping improved, so did public opinion.

While it blocks the view of the river from the street, the top of the dike is an excellent trail with a great view.

Interpretive panels and benches are the newest addition to the trail. Parks Canada relocated its

signage related to the SS Keno to the dike trail, and the Princess Sophia Memorial can be found a bit further north.

When the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in built the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, they snuggled it close to the dike. The trail winds smoothly around the building’s west side.

To the north we now have an area for the farmer’s market, the gazebo, a town clock, a picnic shelter, and a place for paragliders to land after they jump off the Midnight Dome.

The dike has become a vital and attractive part of Dawson’s landscape over the last 27 years.

his is a lynx skull, found by my boyfriendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dog. We were out at Hunker Creek, just outside of Dawson City, last summer. A few

friends and I were building a stage for a music event we put on,

and the dog, Frett, wandered off and came back playing with the

skull. I was fascinated with the little beard of fur that remained. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always enjoyed seeing bones and antlers while hiking, and so does the dog apparently.

Wet Crossings on No-Name Mountain

T

he weather this morning is pretty good, which is important for the hike today, given that it will include several wet crossings.

I will explore a route up to one of the higher mountains around Whitehorse.

Lying west of Kusawa Lake, its the peak situated further back than many from the Alaska Highway, it is not very obvious and exhibits no prominent features. It is a no-name mountain.

I phone Garry Njootli to find out if he has found a name for it.

He has not, but has discovered a name for Jo-Jo Peak, the mountain just to its east. Jo-Jo Peak is officially named Thadlat Dhal, a Southern Tutchone name meaning “high sharp peak on one side of the mountain”.

So, the mountain to the west of Thadlat Dhal, our destination today, is possibly 2127 metres, exceeding the height of Mount Granger by 30 meters. It is still lower than Mount Skukum, the summit of which was probably a nunatak.

This is what I am after today, to

know by the facts on the summit if this mountain is in fact a nunatak, which in English translates as “an isolated peak of rock projecting above a surface of inland ice or snow”.

I hiked over the summit of this no-name mountain years ago, and have always wondered about it because it looks different from all the other mountaintops around here. While all other nearby peaks are polished off, the top of this one is a mile-long field of freezersize stones.

I remember finding a yellow poppy among the rubble, a flower I had not seen on other mountains in this area. Flowers always make me wonder about geological significance. Why here and not there?

According to Jeffrey D. Bond, 18,000 years ago Whitehorse was possibly covered in at least 1350 meters of ice. This was during the Late Wisconsinan McConnell glaciation period. There is an erratic formation on the summit of Mount Granger, suggesting that was the maximum height of the glacier.

Maybe my mountaintop has always been ice-free?

Today, I find someone crazy enough (Margreet Bierens) to explore a feasible route to my possible neighbourhood nunatak.

Striped to the chest from the feet up, we attempt to cross the first marsh, only to sink in the muck too deep for our liking.

Thrashing our way through willows, we find a place where the bottom is a little more solid.

Back on the trail, important because I have got lost in this marshland before, all the way to Pond Creek there are more waterholes to get through. At Pond Creek we strip totally naked, making several crossings carrying our belongings above our heads. Thermarests would have come in handy to float our packs across. This being a day hike, we didn’t bring them. But thoughtfully, we did bring along light runners to secure our footing in the water.

Fully dressed again, mostly for protection from pesky mosquitoes, we continue along the open bank of the creek that comes out of Jo-Jo Lake. When the trail veers away into the forest we grow quiet, dealing with the over-

whelming mosquitoes in a meditative way.

It keeps the mosquitoes from bothering us.

But then, suddenly a beautiful blonde grizzly appears ahead of us.

I have learned to remain calm, and I notify Margreet in a way that leaves no room for error.

Having our bear spray ready, we talk to the bear, which leaves leisurely.

I have vowed to myself that I will never follow a bear or go around it when not absolutely necessary. Being in a gradually narrowing valley, this means we have to turn back.

Having returned to Pond Creek, we decide to have lunch on a hill with a view we find through the use of our maps and compass. After lunch, we follow Pond Creek, which has many good wildlife trails and some lovely sandy beaches at some of its many bends.

lying dead on its side. Neither bear, nor any other meat eater has come upon it.

Later, I phone Yukon Conservation. They say they are always interested in such information. But, needing at least a bone of the hind leg to determine the cause of death, the lynx’s demise shall remain a mystery. Truth be told, I would not have liked to disturb the macabre, yet somehow peaceful scene, having come upon it by chance.

Musings on our relationships with those we eat

I

feel a bit like Gollum.

I am squatting on my haunches, slurping delicious juices from my fingers as I delight in a fresh pike.

Perhaps muttering to myself a little. Except I’m picking out the bones, whereas Gollum relished them with a crunch.

And my fish is piping hot — J.R.R. Tolkien’s pity-worthy character would wail at what I have done, ruining a perfectly nice slippery meal by slowcooking it over hot coals.

I hope a similar cry will rise from my readers to learn that I have been out on the lake five days and this is the first fish supper I’ve had.

I can explain — I’ve been working on the lake, and using my time on smooth, glassy water to travel instead of fish.

If there is wind, I have learned it is safe to assume that it will be anywhere but behind me — a tailwind is so rare it’s almost mythological. While I have been taking small snatches of time to fish, this is the first day I have persisted long enough to catch one. Or been lucky enough. Or had the right attitude.

I came close yesterday — I watched a pike follow the lure, and decided to hold out for a trout, wondering as I did so, “will I have bad luck if I don’t take the first fish offered? Or should one return the first catch in gratitude? Or is that superstitious nonsense?”

Today, with the sun intense on my back and the wind low, I stood out on a sandbar up to my knees, casting out over the dropoff. As I did so I reflected on the

The question that arises for me is: because I am taking, is something being given? If so, by whom?

Take this pike, for example. It died so I may live.

I don’t think that this individual fish decided to give itself to me, and my belief on the subject affects my attitude towards the fish.

My rational brain tells me it fell for the nasty trick I played by adding spiky hooks to a bit of metal made to move like a tasty treat. And yet I thank it. For reasons beyond the rational, because whether or not the fish knows it,

So who or what is the giver?

I’m not sure, but my ritual of thanks is important to me because it affirms one way I view my relationship to nature — the sacred way — which co-exists with the scientific lens, though it isn’t always easy to acknowledge equally and comfortably.

Ecologists speak of the interconnectedness of species in complex relationships; physicists speak of energy being matter and vice

versa; and many eastern religions teach that all things are manifestations of the divine.

The fish in these lakes are dependent on habitat created by beaver dams, which boaters often ironically damage while trying to access less-fished waters. There are as many ways of viewing our relationships with other animals as there are people, and perhaps the motions of ritual are unimportant relative to the intention behind them.

Cooking over an open fire is one of my great pleasures.

It takes time to build a ring of stones to hold the warmth to get the heat just right, and the sitting, watching, and waiting is rewarding. Pike comes ready-wrapped for the fire, as it is one of the few fish whose skin (which is tough enough to use for boots) I don’t like to eat; no need for aluminum foil. I like to make a nice hot twig fire for boiling water for tea; then I feed on slightly bigger sticks and let them build up a good bed of coals. I cut a green willow, which I feed through the fish’s mouth and out a hole I cut near the tail, balancing either end on rocks or sturdy forked sticks driven into the ground. When the skin chars a little and peels away, the flesh will be flakey and cooked through, ready to be picked off with eager fingers.

Salt and pepper or seasoning salt optional — look out for my version in the next article.

And so I do give thanks, for giving, or for being given, or for forgiving my taking, to the fish, and all of the other parts of this beautiful world that couldn’t exist without it.
