Jickling’s Jabberings with Peter Jickling

Summer Mania L

ast Saturday I checked my phone for the time, expecting it to be 4 p.m. Instead, the digits glaring back at me read 7:15. Despite spending most of my life North of 60, the seemingly endless days of summer still find ways to sneak up from behind and clobber me. Sometimes this clobbering comes in the form of a sudden, unexpected shock, like the one listed above, and other times it results from weeks of summer mania coming to a crashing end. Summer mania, as I define it, is the tendency of Northerners to disregard temporal common sense in the quest pack their long, beautiful days with as much activity as possible. It’s a brand of mania fueled by the extensive hours of Yukon sunlight, which can occasionally provide one with a sense of something akin to immortality. Someone in the grips of summer mania might be spotted golfing at midnight, cooking dinner at 1 a.m., suggesting a game of Parcheesi at 2 a.m., or buying potato wedges from Tags at 3 a.m. And this sort of no-holds-barred ridiculousness can continue for weeks on end. If one self-medicates effectively with caffeine it may last even longer. But the sun drenched illusion of immortality is an egg waiting to be cracked. We are not gods, but rather fleshy blobs requiring sleep and sustenance at somewhat regular intervals. Prolonged failure to provide oneself these necessities will result in a day of reckoning. The Sunday “morning” after I made my threehour error in timeestimation found me lying in bed, exhausted (not hung-over) to the point of incapacitation. Summer mania had tracked me down and beaten me. I finally creaked out of bed at 1 p.m. and found some coffee at the bottom of a Bodum. I drank it

world again. And thus the cycle of summer mania started its orbit again. This is not a cautionary tale — far from it. I believe that to go and go and go and go and go until one can simply go no more is a noble way to conduct a Yukon summer. Even during my recovery day I took satisfaction in knowing that my exhaustion was not caused by mono or Rohypnol, but that it resulted from hours and hours of being awake, doing stuff. But amidst my self-congratulatory lifestyle I have learned at least one thing: the next time I misjudge the time by three hours it’s time for a little nap.

Local Farmers Need Us to Gobble Their Stuff Organic farming isn’t easy, but at least Yukoners have healthy appetites by Tamara Neely

W

hen the highway flooded-out last spring it meant that cargo trucks full of food couldn’t deliver their goods to grocery stores. It was a wake-up call that as a whole, we’re pretty dependent on food from hot, foreign places. Still, there are Yukoners with a passion for supplying healthy, chemical-free food produced using sustainable practices. But being an organic farmer is a tough row to hoe. If local, organic produce is more expensive than industrially farmed produce, some mental justification is needed to pay the extra sum. But if you’re ready to support our local farmers, then locally produced vegetables, eggs, cheese and other products can be found in Whitehorse at the Fireweed Market, every Thursday throughout the summer. Producers will also sell from their farm gate; take food orders; and sell through the Potluck Food Co-op. Bart Bounds and Kate Mechan, who operate Elemental Farm off the Takhini Hot Springs Road, sell a variety of vegetables at the market and through the Alpine Bakery’s weekly produce box service. Bounds and Mechan are passionate about using healthy and sustainable techniques for growing food. But they say a change is needed. “Lots of people think there’s no farming in the Yukon,” Mechan says. And Bounds says it would help

farmers if people would think about eating regionally and seasonally. If we calculate the cost of industrialized farming and longhaul transport, a banana starts to look like an environmental problem. “We need to put the true cost on food,” Bounds says. But can we be happy and sated on the kinds of produce the Yukon can offer? The Elemental Farm harvests cherry tomatoes, onions, carrots, potatoes, beans, beets and so on. “Boy, I really like the turnips when I get them – and the greens,” Bounds says. “I’m grazing out here all day.” Down the Takhini Hot Springs Road from Elemental Farm is Rivendell Farm. There, Mary and Rolland Girouard work to produce healthy food. Rolland knows first-hand about the powerful effect food has on our bodies. After farming for nine years, his health deteriorated to the point that he and Mary decided to shut the whole operation down. They had to figure out what was going on. Turns out it was a wheat allergy. “I already knew that food is critical to everything,” Rolland says. “If you put bad things in, it accumulates to the point that you pass away from — whatever.” So they started up again and the Rivendell Farm earned organic certification in 2006. Their primary method of selling produce is through an annual membership that provides grazing privileges.

Susan Ross and Brian Lendrum produce organic vegetables and goat cheese.

“Mostly we do a Pickyour-Own,” Rolland says. “It’s a $150 membership per year for a family of three. Then they can come in and pick whatever they want for their meals and we grow a certain quantity of our harvest.” After 30 years, the business is still challenging. They grow bedding plants to bolster their revenue. “We’d rather have the greenhouses filled with food,” Rolland says. “But bedding plants are the engine that drive us.” There doesn’t seem to be easy money in farming — even though we all need to eat three times per day. At least. Brian Lendrum and Susan Ross are also juggling products to make farming feasible. They have been farming on the marge of Lake Laberge since 1986. Their certified organic Lendrum Ross Farm produces 15 different vegetables and goat cheese. “Cheese is our biggest income, but because we have to keep the goats through the winter, it’s also our biggest expense,” Ross says. “Our biggest profit is vegetables.” They have been producing goat cheese for 25 years. Lendrum, who is blind, explains the process: “It’s just a sink and a stove and a fridge, that’s pretty much it,” Lendrum says. “We do all the pasteurizing on the stovetop. Our biggest pot is 30 litres. That’s all I can lift. “We can produce enough milk to keep this little place busy. And if we produced more milk, then we’d have to get a bigger fridge.

PHOTO: Tamara Neely So we’re in balance now.” There are at least nine more farms in the Yukon putting their hearts and souls into healthy food production. Check out the Growers of Organic Food Yukon website at Organic.YukonFood.com to find out what they offer and how to buy it. The Fireweed Community Market is located in Shipyards Park in Whitehorse, and runs from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays.

T

here is a buzz of excitement among the arts community in Dawson City. Starting last weekend, and continuing every Saturday throughout the summer, Dawson will have a regular artists’ market. The market is a joint initiative between Tr’ondek Hwech’in and the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC). “There’s so much talent in this town and the market is there — tourists are always looking for local work,” says Elaine Corden, market coordinator. “We just needed the commitment to make it happen.” Corden says there has been talk about an artists’ market for several years. Finally, after much research; a feasibility study; support from the Mayor, the City and local businesses as well as 100 per cent positive feedback, the market has become a reality. “It’s high time,” says Corden. “I’m so glad this market is happening,” says local artist Aubyn O’Grady. She and Rian Lougheed-Smith founded the Klondike Drawing

Company three years ago and create locally inspired silkscreen prints on t-shirts and postcards. “The market gives us the opportunity to make and sell on a regular basis,” she says. O’Grady points out that many artists come to Dawson, but are not able to find a market for their art. She feels the artists’ market will give these artists a place and an opportunity to find their niche. “And for us, the beauty of this market is that we can experiment more and try new things,” says O’Grady. “It’s such a good idea and I’m very excited.” The rules are simple: the market is open to all Yukon artists; merchandise must be made by, or value-added by, the vendor; and no food is allowed for sale. A maximum of 15 tables will fit into the outdoor community events shelter where the market will be held, and artists may share tables if they wish. Artists must register at KIAC during the week before the market. Membership is $40 per season, plus $5 per day, which includes a table and chair donated by KIAC,

or $15 per day for non-members. One table will be available for youth 18-and-under for free. Corden hopes that eventually the market will be self-reliant. Money generated from memberships and fees will go towards the purchase of tables and chairs, marketing and signage. She also hopes to feature First Nations art, and is working on getting a name for the market in Han, the local First Nations language. “There is tons of talent in this community,” Corden says. “I’m really hoping this market will fly.” The Dawson Artists’ Market will be held on Saturdays throughout the summer, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the community events shelter on Front Street. For more information, please contact Elaine Corden at market@kiac.ca, or phone KIAC at 993-5005. Gabriela Sgaga lives off the grid in her West Dawson cabin with her eight sled dogs. She enjoys mushing, skijoring and writing about everyday life in the Yukon.

Review of the Environment Act Permitting System The Government of Yukon seeks public comment on its plans for updating how permits are issued under the Environment Act. The proposed changes would modernize the regime so that it fairly reflects the technical issues, costs and risks to public and environmental health.

rowing up on a prairie farm, interaction with wildlife was pretty rare. We would see the odd rabbit or coyote and, of course, songbirds – but rarely anything larger. We had approximately a quarter section of land in which to explore and play, though, I do remember when a bear in the area restricted our wanderings considerably. Now, living in and among wildlife is amazing; it is a thrill to see something wild and free. We have had all sorts of animals cross through our place. We are very glad to see some just pass through, but others, like the barn swallows who love eating mosquitoes, are welcome to stay. But farming in and among wildlife does present challenges. While it may seem wonderful to have free-range chickens — free from cages and free to choose what leafy plant to eat — there are predators around who would enjoy a chicken dinner. We still al-

low our laying hens to range freely but we also know there won’t always be the same number at the end of the day. Geese range about the yard and keep most foxes, ravens and coyotes at a reasonable distance. We try to keep younger birds enclosed in a pen with a fishnet mesh on the top. As long as they stay inside they are safe from ra-

no interest in our livestock. They are much more inclined to eat the willow or graze on the poplar. But anyone with a dog knows that even the easy going porcupine can pose problems. Our dog Schwartz found out a few years ago that it was best to just let them pass through without any hassles. Now he can’t be found when we see one. Schwartz is a very good guard dog. He thrives on chasing off ravens and foxes, and considers the area on which we farm to be his territory. This doesn’t stop us from seeing foxes, deer, porcupines or even bear. But it does help us to live alongside them a little more peacefully.

ven attacks, but if they stroll outside the pen their only remains may be a puff of feathers where they met a raven. Generally predators target the younger ones. The more we have farmed in the Yukon, the more we have learned. We have noticed more attempts on our livestock early in the season — when there are kits in the fox den and raven chicks in the nest. Being a Dog

I DON’T THINK I WOULD BE A HOG ‘CAUSE I’D RATHER BE A DOG. I DON’T THINK I WANT TO BE A SNAIL ‘CAUSE I LIKE WAGGING MY TAIL. I DON’T LIKE TO BE A SHARK ‘CAUSE I WANT TO BARK. I WOULDN’T WANT TO BE AN OWL ‘CAUSE I NEED TO HOWL. I DON’T THINK I WANT TO BE MY AUNT ‘CAUSE I NEED TO PANT. MAYBE I CAN FLY LIKE AN EAGLE

BUT I’D RATHER BE A BEAGLE. I DON’T THINK I WANT TO BE A CRAB I WOULD RATHER BE A LAB. IT WOULD BE FUN TO CHASE A BEAVER ‘CAUSE IT’S COOL TO BE A RETRIEVER. I DON’T THINK I WOULD BE A HEN ‘CAUSE I’D RATHER BE MAN’S BEST FRIEnD. I DON’T WANT TO CROAK LIKE A FROG ‘CAUSE IT’S BETTER TO BE A DOG.

Seeking Beervana with Lara Lewis

No Judgement. Really. I ’m not going to tell you what you should drink. I don’t care if you ferment raisins with brewers yeast in a garbage pail. I’m a laissez-faire kind of person. You can drink your Bud Light Lime, your Wildcat or your Pabst Blue Ribbon. You don’t have to be sheepish. Why would I care? Most people like to go out on a beer-limb once in a while, but it depends what your end game is. If it’s just to catch a cheap buzz, then who am I to say your beer sucks. The math is probably solid. You just have to make sure the beer is doing its job. If its job is to kill your taste buds so you can’t tell that your leftover kung pao chicken has gone rancid, then an over-hopped, super dry Imperial IPA may just be the answer. If you are planning an evening stakeout to watch the beavers decimate the trees by the Yukon River, maybe an espresso stout is

in order. If you have hours of yard work ahead of you, you probably want to turn to what they dub lawnmower beers. Summer heat demands something quenching, not too alcoholic, and not overly bitter. A light, low calorie lager is probably your best bet. But along with the usual mass-produced suspects, any European pilsner will go nicely with a John Deere. Or, if you are into wheat, the German hefeweizens with their high carbonation and spicy finish can be lovely. Hoegaarden, a Belgian wit beer with coriander and orange peel, bursts with refreshment. I am not against adulteration either. My Welsh grandpa would swear by his shandy — a geriatric mix of ginger ale with an English bitter — to keep him going while watching long days of cricket in the old country. It’s sort of the beer equivalent of a wine spritzer, but blue collar (less Real Housewives

of Beverly Hills and more Cockney chimney sweep). I don’t know anybody who drinks shandies anymore, or at least, anybody with a prostate who will admit to it. But, they can be delicious. There are some people who swear that Guinness is the best summer beer; probably the same people who sit in the sweltering heat sipping cappuccinos. I don’t get it. But I am capable of changing my mind. As William Blake once wrote, “The person who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind.” I just like that last bit about the reptiles.

PHOTO: Lara Lewis

Homebrewed spruce tip ale makes a pretty good lawnmower beer for Lara. Lara Lewis has been a homebrewer for years and is a certified beer judge through the American Homebrew Association’s Beer Judge Certification Program.

Increase Your Chances of Communicating with Outer Space Become a Yukon Amateur Radio Association member by Aimée Dawn Robinson

PHOTOS: Rick Massie

At home in Whitehorse, Ron McFadyen has a radio room set up, called the Ham Shack.

“H

ow big is the space station and do you have enough room to dance?” a Grade 3 Grey Mountain Primary School student asked Chris Hadfield via the do-it-yourself magic of ham radio. “It’s huge,” Hadfield said. “It’s the size of five hockey rinks. Yes, there is room to dance, but I need someone to dance with.” On April 13, 2013, 13 Whitehorse students posed questions about life aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to Canadian astronaut Hadfield in real time. Yukon Amateur Radio Association (YARA), and the international volunteer group Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) made this radio transmission possible. The radio operators who facilitated the call were VY11SS-Ron (Whitehorse), VY1CAM-Catherine (Whitehorse), VE1ISS-Wayne (Nova Scotia) and 1KISLD-Claudio (Italy). According to ham operator Ron McFadyen (VY11SS-Ron), the Grey Mountain conversation with Hadfield was the most successful call placed to space with ARISS. This is remarkable, because due to the position of the space station in relation to Whitehorse, it

bit directly above his house at the time of the call, the radio transmission went off without a hitch. McFadyen is a former CKRW and long-time CBC radio journalist, the founding president of YARA and recipient of several awards for ham radio-related community service, including a Diamond Jubilee Medal. McFadyen, who received his ham license in 1976, is excited about further possibilities for amateur radio in schools. “Young people need to realize that through the ham radio systems in place in the Yukon, people can talk for free across the territory,” he says. He also notes that using ham radio in combination with computers opens up and whole world of communication and, if teachers and students are interested, YARA could help create ham radio stations at school. In this way, McFadyen and YARA

Ron McFadyen, call sign VY11SS-Ron, and Bailey the dog, call sign unknown, can speak, and listen, to the world from the Ham Shack.

YARA President Terry Maher (VY1AK) started operating in 1970 with a novice license, a limited bandwidth and knowledge of Morse code. “We’re all old,” says Maher of the 30 YARA members. “Since the advent of cell phones and texting there is less interest in ham radio. But it is a great way to talk to people, it’s fun and you can learn about electronics.” YARA is currently seeking new and younger members, Maher says. “Scholarships to learn about ham radio are offered through Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) and American Radio Relay League (ARRL).” It’s old technology that has everyday applications. The Yukon government still relies on ham operators during disaster and emergencies. During the Yukon-wide communication blackout in early October 2012, ham operators established an early communications system. Recently, emergency communication services were provided by amateur radio operators in Calgary during the flood and the Boston bombing. “When all else fails, call the ham operators,” says McFadyen. However, despite everything they do, there are some things they won’t. Foul language, talk of religion and politics or jumping uninvited into conversations, are not allowed on ham airwaves. Ham operators self-police amateur frequencies and report airwave infractions to Industry Canada and the Federal Communications Commission in the United States. YARA, founded in 1976, offers surplus radios to members for a nominal fee. Members can also receive special oper-

ator emergency training, not to mention fame and respect from beyond the grave. Yukon ham radio operators drive vehicles with license plates “VY1” on them. Deceased ham operators’ call signs are designated by “SK,” standing for “Silent Key,” a reference to the key required to tap Morse code. Leave it to inventive ham operators to communicate respectful signals beyond both space and death. To learn more about ham radio operating drop by the YARA coffee discussion group in Whitehorse, every Saturday at 9:30 a.m at the A&W. For information about amateur radio license, courses, equipment and all things ham radio go to the YARA website: www.yara.ca. Watch the full conversation between Grey Mountain Primary School and ISS Commander Chris Hadfield on YouTube, the video is called “The Hadfield Contact Audio GMP 2013 Grey Mountain Primary, Yukon.” Aimée Dawn Robinson is a writer, dancer and visual artist living in Dawson.

Ron McFadyen has this 74-foot High Frequency Worldwide Tower in the family backyard in Whitehorse. “And we still have space for a picnic table, too.”

Family on Wheels by Denise L. Norman

I

have always been impressed by cyclists on the Alaska Highway. You know the ones I mean — bikes loaded down, their grimaced, sweating faces telling me how tough they are, and intimidating me into thinking, “I can’t imagine I could ever do that.” Those guys have nothing on my new heroes, the Skarstedt/Roberts/Stapley/Kingsley family from Utah/Alaska/Louisiana. Grandmother Cindy Kingsley announced to her sister, and fellow grandmother Mary Ann Roberts, “Mary, I’m biking the Alcan Highway,” and Mary Ann said,

“Me, too!” Then Mary Ann’s daughter Kristina asked, “Can I come?” This process continued until the cycling party had grown to 14 family members, covering three generations. “I’ve always done safe things, my whole life,” Mary Ann says. “I wanted to do something crazy.” I came upon this unlikely group of travelers for the first time at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26, between Burwash Landing and Destruction Bay. By Thursday afternoon at around 2:30 p.m., they were taking a rest break at the Kluane Lake

Rest Area some 55-plus kilometres further on. They had done well – there are some serious hills on the Alcan Highway. They started their adventure in Fairbanks on June 15 and, in order to make their goal of Dawson Creek, B.C. by August 9, they must average at least 45-46 kilometres per day. That’s 14 people — and five of them are under 10 years old. The convoy includes

Bonnie Skarstedt has the most important items handy: bear spray and lip balm. Hazel, 4, riding a geared extension behind her mom Kristina’s bike, and Hanim, 5, riding her own bike. And I complained when I had to coordinate an 8-person team for the Kluane-Chilkat relay. Not only did the ladies in charge negotiate a sponsorship from Bear Creek Country Kitchens, to supply them with all 15 flavours of their dried soups at cost, Kristina put her dehydrator to work and produced seven or eight different kinds of homemade, mostly raw, energy bars. The ingredients include everything from sprouted nuts, flax seeds, cherries, and even kale. The favourite, it seems are the Pizza Bars. I took careful note of the ingredients. The group has a support vehicle — a van loaded with any provisions that won’t fit on the bikes. Cindy and Mary Ann drive ahead, park the van, jump back on their bikes and double-back so they can ride along with the rest of the family. My guess is they are actually racking up more kilometres that way. The support van is also carrying the carcass of a broken down

The grandmothers who instigated the bike trip are Mary Ann Roberts, left and Cindy Kingsley.

Uncle Jimmy loves spending time with his cousins, nieces and nephews. Bonny, 11, likes seeing what is up ahead and making up songs about their adventure. Hazel, 4, is shy, but finally answers, “I like the mush.” The moms burst out laughing. “That’s the hot cereal we make for breakfast.” So where were the dads? On the road to Whitehorse, to bring them a fresh stock of provisions and cheer them on for the second half of their adventure. Now when I see those uber-fit looking guys on the Alcan, I’m not intimidated. I just remember my new heroes and the mottos they have on their t-shirts: “I can… Yukon… we Alcan,” and “Face Your Gears.”

rt, nature, and religion come together in Rosemary Scanlon’s exhibit, Animal Icons. The show opens July 11 at the Rah Rah Gallery and features several new watercolours as well as pieces exhibited at Northern Scene in Ottawa this spring and the 2012 show, Sleep of Reason, at the Yukon Arts Centre. Scanlon’s work is characterized by spidery and portentous watercolour images, rich in detail and texture and judiciously embellished with gold leaf. Her images are primarily of animals, which contain small, stylized worlds within them. “I’d always been interested in religious iconography, like Madonna and Child and I had always thought that the owl’s elongated face was like Mary,” Scanlon says. She points to a sketch in her studio, a classic posture of a longnecked Madonna cradling her child, except that Madonna is actually an owl. “I think people are looking for spiritual figures and maybe are replacing spiritual figures with nature and animals,” Scanlon says. This may resonate with those who have felt awe at their close proximity to nature. “It can happen when you’re walking and you see a fox and you have that moment when you look at each other and you wonder to yourself if something just happened,” she says. The longing to connect with the spiritual is reflected in her paintings. Human hands reach to touch the owl. A hand is laid casually – and even

Though Scanlon’s paintings are distinctive, she borrows from artistic themes that inspire her. “I was interested in looking at

Scanlon is preparing for a 6-week residency at the Banff Centre later this year. She has proposed to do a series of larger format pieces that build on the techniques she has been working on in her current practice. “The paintings that I’m proposing to make there will push my materials and work,” she says. “They’ll be larger landscapes, hopefully, that I can use for an upcoming show at the (Yukon) Arts Centre.” For now, she is pleased with the opportunity to experiment, and to share the results with a Whitehorse audience. “For me they are really fun paintings to do, I get to play around stylistically and get a chance to experiment with different watercolour techniques such as marbling,” says Scanlon. “It’s giving me a chance to play around with techniques and materials before I move on to bigger pieces that are more of a commitment.” The opening reception for Whitehorse artist Rosemary Scanlon’s show Animal Icons takes place Thursday, July 11 at 5 p.m. at the Rah Rah Gallery, located at 6159 6th Avenue in Whitehorse. The show is up until August 3. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
