I learned many lessons from Alan Baer, and one was to relish the spectacular vistas that were the backdrop of our aerial classroom

T

his fall I attended the Yukon Biodiversity Forum , a yearly round-up of biology goingson in the territory. I reunited with old friends and met new ones, and was overjoyed to hear that an old mentor of mine was planning on coming back to the territory. Alan Baer had taught me the art of strapping antennae to the wings of a plane and flying about the countryside in search of collared animals — aerial telemetry — but we lost touch since he retired and headed south. I sent off a letter, expressing my eagerness to see him and welcome him home. He never opened it. A week later I picked up a paper after a self-imposed newshiatus, and read the notice — Al had passed away at the end of October. I missed the memorial service, but I think he would have understood; he was sympathetic to my efforts to step out from time to time. So instead, I composed these lines in his memory, while gazing out at the mountains from the Canada Games Centre. The view took me squarely back into another time, flying low over the Pelly Mountains. Names like Livingstone and Hootalinqua jumped off the too-large map

folded on my knees and took life in the landscape below, as we scooted up steep draws and skimmed treetops. I was working for the Teslin Tlingit Council, and was under Al’s tutelage — who worked for Environment Yukon. Together we were borne aloft in a tiny plane piloted by Gerd Mannsperger. While I sometimes felt extraneous in light of their combined experience and skill, I couldn’t have been happier. Al was quick to hand over the telemetry box to his acolyte and take up his post, scrunched in the narrow rear seat, from where he would share jokes with Gerd, and holler numbers at me from his GPS. The two of them would chow down on sandwiches from Tim Hortons, and shake their heads despairingly at this new generation of biologists, whose stomachs didn’t allow them to enjoy the fast-moving scenery and delightfully dizzying spins Gerd orchestrated. I focused on the sublime landscape and by sheer willpower resolved not to fall into that lamentable category. It didn’t always work, but when I did succumb to motion sickness Al was always kind, and the comments

would shift to the redeeming qualities of those who were able to continue to work even after turning to the sickbag. I looked forward to the camaraderie of those times, and would pepper Al with questions — he was a wealth of information and generous with stories and insights. Once training was complete and I was sent off solo with Gerd, I would seek out Al whenever I made a trip to the Environment Yukon office, just to chat. We bonded over a shared love of wild places, of getting out into the bush. Then I left my job, and he retired, and our contact diminished over time. The last time we spoke, in 2011, he talked about the dreamweaver, and wished me a brightly coloured thread. I miss your presence Al, and though I am saddened to know you won’t be coming home to this land that you loved so much, I am heartened when I look out at those mountains, because I know that a large part of you never left. Someone to Talk To by Meagan Deuling

H

ailey Hechtman volunteered for a distress and support line in Ontario for five years. She wanted to keep volunteering for a support-phone organization when she moved to Whitehorse in 2013, but there wasn’t one. So she created the Yukon Support and Distress line. Through her role at the Second Opinion Society, Hechtman approached organizations like Bringing Youth Towards Equality, the Council of Yukon First Nations, and Health and Social Services and the RCMP. She asked if there was a need for a support line. She found out there was. If someone was suicidal, or in a crisis, or needed to talk, they had to experience this before 5:00 pm. There was nothing in place for crises, or confidential conversations after that, aside from the RCMP and the hospital, or Kaushee’s Place for women in precarious situations. Hechtman saw gaps in the services. First, because she says the evening and night is a lonely time. It’s when people feel isolated and hopeless. Secondly, she says it’s important for a proactive, preventative system to be in place. The RCMP and the hospital aren’t set up to talk about loneliness, anxiety, depression, or someone’s crappy day. They are in place to react to crises. Hechtman says the support and distress line she envisioned would have volunteers in place to

talk to people before they reach a point where they’d need to go to the police or hospital. She envisioned a phone line that would prevent visits to the police or hospital. After getting donations from Northwestel, Bell, and from members of the community, and funding from Health and Social Services, the Yukon Distress and Support line has been up and running since this November. There are 27 volunteers who take shifts between 7:00 pm and 11:00 pm, and between 11:00 pm and 3:00 am. They have to take a minimum of two shifts a month, and they are trained in active listening and suicide prevention. Hechtman says empathy is a volunteer’s most important quality. They’ve had 25 calls since November. Most of the people calling were dealing with addictions. Some were crisis calls, but most of them were people needing someone to talk to. Hechtman says it’s good to get those. It’s good to get repeat callers. She says when she volunteered in Ontario there were people who called every night; they built relationships. “It’s not always just about sadness. It’s a support system no matter what you want to talk about.” Hechtman says it’s not a bad sign for someone to call more than once, or every night – “sometimes it’s nice to talk to someone you don’t know.” Aside from listening, support line volunteers navigate callers

Inside

PHOTO: pixabay.com through the system. Hechtman says there are lots of resources in place, but it’s hard to know what you need, or where it is. A phone line is a step toward bringing conversations about mental health into the middle of the room. Hechtman says phone calls are confidential and anonymous; this helps people open up. “Talking about it and sharing it is more likely to make people reach out. “You don’t have to wait till you’re at the bottom. You can call and say you spilled coffee on your shirt and had a terrible day.” Hechtman says furthering conversations about mental health helps it become normal – “we’ve

all felt crappy, we all know.” Hechtman hopes in a year’s time the support line has a regular influx of callers. She wants more calls to come from the communities. She hopes to have regular callers who feel like they can open up and have conversations “it’s just about creating connections in the community,” she says. The Yukon Distress and Support line is open from 7:00 pm to 3:00 am daily. Call 1-844-533-3030.

Heidi Hehn dabbles in a bit of everything for 2015 by Angela Szymczuk

S

he sculpts, paints, sketches and makes jewelry. This talented Yukoner goes by the name of Heidi Hehn. Some of you may recognize the name from her various raven paintings. When I first arrived in the Yukon two years ago, the first thing I noticed at the gift shop was the famous painting of a pick up truck with some ravens hanging out, painted by Hehn. In April of this year Hehn will be hosting a solo show at the Yukon Artists at Work Gallery, promising new and exciting pieces. Aside from painting Yukon’s official bird, Hehn has a whole lot more diversity in her work. Mountains, lakes, wilderness and wildlife are all captured on Hehn’s canvas. The inspiration is as follows, “the eerily strange light of the long winter days and the long summer nights, and the fact that such a vast and open space is ripe with a lot of stories... and the history and pre-history provide even more story ops,” she says. But Hehn’s overall interest in the great North goes back to her childhood. Her father was stationed in the North with the air force. Here she was exposed to native art and beadwork. This would later further her interest in creating jewelry. Her father also sculpted and painted, and taught her many different techniques along the way. Every artist knows that mediums are just as important as the painting itself. Hehn’s earliest memory goes back to when she was a toddler, and played with

“Luminous Land” watercolours. To this day watercolours play an important part in her artwork. Hehn also like to work with clay and create sculptures, and she is well known for her handmade jewelry. “I am inspired by styles from the Southwest deserts, and ancient Egypt. Learning about these ancient civilizations have even got me thinking of ideas for a novel.” In addition to choosing her own painting ideas, Hehn also accepts commissions, which she enjoys doing. “There the ideas are as endless as the North. I start by abstracting the scene I want to paint. And when that is right for colour and balance I go to the finishing stage.” Hehn says that one of her most challenging pieces was a commission, in which she had to paint a convertible automobile from the 1930s with a historical building backdrop. This piece sort of

brought Hehn out of her comfort zone. Not used to having to paint historical building, she had to do a lot of research. But she also had to play around with colours, as the car was meant to be the focal point of the piece. In the end, it turned out fantastic. Given the many decades Hehn has been painting for, there is one style she has not really tried -- abstraction. The gifted artist has her reason: “Abstraction is the first stage of beginning painting, so to stop at that stage for me is like not finishing the project, but I do enjoy doing magical realism.” For more information about Heidi, please visit, www.wildartsweb.com. King of the Castle Mt. Sima’s new playground by Joslyn Kilborn a good idea to bring a sled. There are also coloured ice blocks kids can build with, and plans to put in a system of tunnels. A neighbouring igloo build is said to be in the works. Waddell’s son Dylan, who is four-years-old, says the snow castle is “cool”. It was Dylan who gave his dad the idea. His favourite thing about the castle? “Sliding.” But it isn’t just for the kids. “I really wanted to do it,” says Waddell. “I can always find time to build something like this. It’s my passion, I have so much fun with a chainsaw in my hand.” He’s always building, and says the castle isn’t a stretch from the kind of unique work he does with his construction company. “It’s an attempt to get my name out there, and do something charitable. I’d always rather do something I can be proud of.” Waddell is hoping to talk to some snow sculptors to have the castle more ornately carved for Rendezvous. “Make it real castle-like,” he says. “I don’t have that artsy part of me.” His castle will also turn into a beer garden with a DJ during Simapalooza, later in the season. “So adults can enjoy it as well.” As far as Waddell is concerned, this castle is just his first. His plans for next year get even bigger.

Tyler Waddel made a snow castle at Mt. Sima for the children

In the Northwest Territories, Waddell tells me, there is a man renowned for the snow castles he builds. They call him the Snow King. “I don’t know what’s bigger than a Snow King,” says Waddell.

hen I moved to Whitehorse I started building with snow in my yard,” says Tyler Waddell, owner of Rockhard Construction, and man behind the new snow castle at Mt. Sima. “Stuff like snow-slides with Christmas lights, ice rinks. The plan here was to build it big.” Waddell began building his snow castle before Christmas, just before Sima opened for the season. It started with MacPherson Rental’s generous donation of an excavator to carve out the initial shape. From there Waddell used a chainsaw to cut out blocks of snow, tiger torching each brick together – “so everything’s structurally sound,” he says. Safety has been a huge concern of his throughout the project, and is actually one of the main reasons the castle exists. “Kids can only do a run or two, then they’re beat,” says Waddell, on snowboarding with young ones. “The idea is to have a very, very safe area for them to play in. Where I would feel safe leaving them while I do my own run.” Part of this involved bringing his kids out in various stages of production and watching them interact with the castle. If they tried to climb up and over one of the walls, he would make that wall un-climbable. And the castle keeps with the theme of downhill winter sports, featuring two large snow-slides coming down from each side; it’s

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in True Detective, available on DVD at Whitehorse Public Library

he world needs bad men to keep other bad men from the door. That’s the view of pessimist-detective Rustin Cohle, who isn’t one to tell his partner what he wants to hear — in this case, that they’re not such bad guys. Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson), and Cohle (Matthew McConaughey), are the mismatched pair in True Detective, an anthology-series produced for HBO and available on DVD at Whitehorse Public Library. A dark tale set in Louisiana and rife with references and symbols from obscure horror classics and bayou culture, True Detective was a phenomenon when its eight episodes aired in early 2014, sparking intense online discussions about philosophy, drama, and whodunit. Hart and Cohle investigate the murder of a woman that Cohle is convinced is the work of a serial killer. His exhaustive legwork yields a fruitful connection with at least one other murder, leading the partners though a Louisiana underworld of criminals, deviants, evangelists, and lost souls. Meanwhile, an older Marty and Rust relate the tale of their investigation in separate interviews

with another pair of detectives, Gilbough and Papania (Michael Potts and Tory Kittles), 17 years after the first murder. But it’s clear from accompanying flashbacks that the estranged Hart and Cohle, neither of whom are still with the police, are unreliable narrators. A new killing has raised questions about the case they thought they’d solved. This isn’t news to Cohle, who back in 2002 uncovered evidence that women and children have been disappearing for years and suspected an elaborate cover-up. In 1995 both detectives are hindered by their troubled psyches. Cohle is prone to bleak philosophical comments; a stint as an undercover drug enforcement agent and personal tragedy has left him brittle. Hart appears to be Cohle’s polar opposite, a placid family man living the middle-class dream, married to Maggie (Michele Monaghan) with two young daughters. But that comfortable lie has unravelled by the time he meets Gilbough and Papania. The Louisiana-setting is essential. Thanks to director Cary Joji Fukunaga and creator-writer Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective evokes a cosmic dread inspired

by a landscape with an impending expiration date. The detectives root through the ruins of buildings destroyed by fire and flood from long-past hurricanes and mutter about the damage done by the killer under the cover of Hurricane Katrina’s chaos. But it’s not all moody atmospherics — Fukanaga won an Emmy for directing “Who Goes There”, the fourth episode, which concludes with several minutes of non-stop action, composed of a technically brilliant, singletake tracking shot. “Be careful what you get good at,” sighs Rust, as the battered partners prepare to settle a debt. Both Harrelson and McConaughey are spellbinding as difficult men who need to transcend their limitations to capture a depraved foe. By the time the finale aired, their weird tale had mesmerized such a large audience that HBO’s streaming service crashed under the weight of the attention.

Three French Guys and a Moose

Part One

by Erma Odrach

C

laude, Jacques and Marcel just finished their shifts at the copper mine outside of Whitehorse and decided to go for a beer in town. They couldn’t agree on which bar to go to, so they drew straws and ended up at the Edgewater. All three of them were healthy and robust looking and it could be said they were equally handsome, though their features differed considerably: Marcel had a broad forehead, Claude a nose like an eagle, and Jacques eyes as blue as the summer sky. Ordering a round of drinks, they laughed and joked; the air was stuffy and saturated with the smell of cigarettes and booze. Claude said out loud, “So, what do you say, guys? Are we still going hunting tomorrow? I think we should head out to Faro. Everyone says the wilderness out there is exceptional and that it’s filled with Dall sheep, moose, mountain caribou, bears, anything you want. They say you’ve got to be a real idiot if you come out of there empty-handed.” “I have a better idea,” suggested Jacques. “What about going to Carcross? After all, they didn’t call it Caribou Crossing for nothing. And besides it’s a lot

closer; we could be there in less than an hour.” The two men argued about where to go and they couldn’t agree. Finally Marcel came between them. He disapproved of hunting all together because he was a vegetarian. “Look, why don’t you just forget about it; hunting is a bloody and violent sport. Do you really want to go into the bush and kill some beautiful animal that’s wild and free? It’s not even fair game. And besides, the supermarket is full of meat.” Claude couldn’t take Marcel seriously and he began to tease him: “What’s the matter with you, Marcel, are you getting soft on us? Man has been hunting moose since the beginning of time, so why stop now?” Then, “Oh, I get it; it’s that girlfriend of yours. What did she make you eat for dinner last night, lentil burgers or maybe tofu tortière? You sure like your women telling you what to do! Hah, hah, hah!” Then Jacques joined in with a few choice words of his own and the two men couldn’t stop laughing. Marcel preferred not to listen; he took a drink of beer and with-

drew into himself. But they just wouldn’t let up, so finally he told them to shut up. When several minutes passed Claude started up again, thinking about their trip. “I can’t wait to go hunting. I love to be in the bush but the kill is what makes it hunting, beating the wild animal at its own game. One good shot and it’s over!” Pretending to be holding a rifle he began shooting into the air, “Bang! Bang! Bang!” Early next morning, packing their gear into Claude’s pick-up truck, the three French guys started up the Mayo Road –- they would go to Faro. Marcel agreed to go along but only because his girlfriend was in Vancouver on business and he had nothing better to do. After about four hours of driving, coming to Carmacks, they turned east on Highway 4 and then traveled another couple of hours. None of them had ever been to Faro before, a small but bustling mining town tucked away into the Tintina Valley. There were mountains all around and the wilderness couldn’t have been more pristine and beautiful. Home to the largest open-pit lead-zinc mine in Canada, trucks traveled non-stop from the mill, and carried ore concentrate to Whitehorse, where it was later taken by rail to Skagway, and then shipped south down the Pacific coast. With a population of about two thousand, the houses were all prefabricated and dull, as if thrown together overnight. Stopping for a quick beer at one of the drinking establishments, the bartender there told the three French guys that directly east of town were

the best hunting grounds. He went on to say and very proudly: “Here in Faro we have one of the most densely concentrated wildlife regions, not only in the Yukon but in the entire country, maybe even in North America!” The three French guys were really impressed, and Claude and Jacques couldn’t wait to get started. They went to the truck, and securing their guns and supplies, started along a well-trodden path. They had food with them, warm clothing, and a tent big enough for the three of them. It was midSeptember and there was already snow on the ground. The day was cold and gray and it felt like winter. Claude couldn’t wait to spot that first moose. He said all fired up: “I can already feel the adrenaline rushing to my head. To eat wild game -- there’s nothing like it. When I pull the trigger and hear that crash to the ground, that’s the ultimate high!” Marcel looked at his friend and shook his head, “You and that rifle of yours -- it’s nothing but a phallic symbol to you.” Then he swore at him in French, “Vas faire foutre a la vache!” The three French guys kept to the path until it disappeared. Soon dense forest patches emerged and they found themselves in the heart of a raw, difficult wilderness. They climbed and climbed but gradually, and their feet forever hit upon soft, spongy lichen. High up on a ridge, in the distance they could see meadows and plateaus, winding rivers and clear blue lakes. The panorama was breathtaking and everything looked as if it had just been created the day

before. Claude took out his binoculars to have a better look and then passed them on to Jacques, who in turn passed them on to Marcel. With the approach of evening the air grew colder and stiller and the sky became a leaden grey. The hunters pitched their tent on a grassy meadow above a gurgling mountain stream. They then built a small fire and cooked their food. When darkness fell, they jumped into the tent and fell asleep, and they slept till morning. They all snored but Claude snored the loudest. With the break of dawn the three French guys set out into the woods in the hopes of finding that moose. It was cloudy and a wet snow began to fall. Claude and Maurice both had rifles, while Marcel carried his camera.

t’s always easier to preach to the converted. If I call myself a scientist, others who like that label might seek me out for a conversation or my opinion on something specific. From an early age we gravitate towards a science persona, or a literary one, or perhaps one that is sporty, or musical. Whatever area we are drawn to tends to define the things we are interested in and feel comfortable learning about. On countless occasions I have heard artist friends of mine say they despise mathematics, or that

they chose books instead of sport. An opposing sentiment echoes from researchers and scientists I have known, who say with a shrug that they can’t draw, or that they are terrible writers. But math is exquisitely aesthetic and poetry is supremely precise, and labels do not set the limits of our creativity. As in nature, there is cross-pollination everywhere and the results are remarkable. Dan Mangan is Back in Town Serenading you with wisdom and tunes

D

an Mangan is almost as excited to see the Yukon again as Yukoners are to see him. In 2010, Mangan played both the Frostbite and Dawson City music festivals and was impressed by the local cultural scene. He says, “it seems to me like there’s a really good music community up there, a really strong arts community. There’s a lot of support for the arts up there.” In turn, Yukoners bought out Mangan’s upcoming show, on Friday, January 30, at the Yukon Arts Centre, in just four days. In the five years since Yukon audiences have seen him, Mangan has grown as a songwriter, expanding from the acoustic folk of his album, Nice Nice Very Nice, to the more textured, atmospheric, eclectic sounds of Oh Fortune and especially his new album, Club Meds, recorded with his band, Blacksmith. “As I’ve just kind of gotten older and spent a lot more time with different kinds of musicians and different kinds of music, it’s expanded my palate a little bit,” Mangan says of the way his songwriting has developed. “I think what you do is take this old tradition and put your mark on it, and I think you do that with sonics as well.” “You hope you’re not just copying anybody and you’re taking all the things that influenced you and putting them through your own kind of funnel or meat grinder. Hopefully what comes out is honest and genuine and thoughtful and relevant.” While his new sounds are bound tightly to the sound he and Blacksmith have created, Mangan will be performing in Whitehorse as a solo act. On rearranging his new

material for an acoustic treatment, he says, “In general, what you’re hoping is that the production, all the tricks to the song, won’t outshine the simplistic strength of the lyric and strength of the melody. “I’ve been doing some press sessions where you go to a radio station and just pull out a guitar and play a song or two. I’ve enjoyed doing these songs in a variety of ways.” In addition to his sold out concert, Mangan will be presenting a workshop performance at the Gold Rush Town Hall. The Artist’s Journey, based on an interview-style keynote he gave at BreakOut West, describes his journey from busking to winning two Juno awards. He says, “I don’t have any secrets or special tricks, in terms of ‘here’s how to make a career in music’, but I have made a tonne of mistakes and learned from them. I don’t even say this with any idea that I’ve arrived at some miraculous career. It’s still in process. I’m still figuring out what I’m doing.”

PHOTO: Norman Wong Mangan adds, “I remember all too closely what it feels like to be in a scenario where you feel like you’re making music and absolutely nobody cares. I can sort of commiserate or bring a perspective to people who are just starting out, and maybe even to people who have a career. “And the other thing is I like to come to these things with the idea that I could learn something from the people that I’m meeting.” Barry ‘Jack’ Jenkins keeps close tabs on the Yukon music scene. The Road Frequently Traveled Yukon artist serves up paintings from the entire nation

Bauberger’s A show called Frances remembers the joie de vivre of Frances the dog

by Angela Szymczuk

Y

ukon artist Nicole Bauberger has decided to take on quite the challenge. She is working on a project called Get Here From There, which will depict Canadian roads from one coast to the other. Bauberger will be driving across the country, stopping along the way to paint scenes. While some artists prefer to photograph and then paint, Bauberger plans to paint live, amidst nature. “I feel the road is a common ground for Canadians, it is interesting, yet troubling at the same time,” she says. Bauberger will be showcasing her collection in Abbotsford, B.C. in 2016. She began the project in 2012. The first portion was showcased at the Art Gallery of St. Albert, AB. The second viewing was at the Dawson Creek Public Gallery, B.C. in 2013. This spring, Bauberger will be in St. John’s, Newfoundland scouting the roads. From there she will travel to Montreal. Having grown up in Peterbor-

Did

“I’m deeply involved in my art community here, and write and think about art and culture in the North as well as taking part in creating it.” Currently, Bauberger is showcasing a collection called Frances at the Yukon Arts Centre Community Gallery from January 8 to 30. The inspiration for these pieces comes from the artist’s dog, Fran-

ces. While Bauberger was on the road painting for her Get Here From There collection Frances was run over and killed. “ O r i g i n a l l y, Frances was supposed to take on the role of a guard dog, but her personality was too friendly. I ended up taking her. I think the relationship between women and dogs is always a special thing,” she says. The artwork for Frances depicts that exclusive rela-

tionship. For more information, visit, www.nicolebauberger.com. Angela Szymczuk is a Whitehorse-based writer. Please send comments about her articles to editor@ whatsupyukon.com.

Bauberger’s River Beauty and other stories will appear at the North End Gallery in February. The painting was inspired by a trip to the Selkirk First Nation traditional territory ough, Ontario, Bauberger was lucky enough to work alongside artist David Bierk. Through this experience she developed many artistic skills, including encaustic art. This medium involves melting wax, creating a painting-like piece of art. “Late at night in the Bierk art studio I began my first experiments with encaustic, using the

hot plate we used to make the rabbit skin glue.” In 2001, during this opportunity, Bauberger began traveling to the Yukon in the summers. Becoming captivated by the wildlife and scenery, Bauberger made the Yukon her permanent home in 2003. “I belong to the Yukon now,” she says.

Skookum Jim Friendship Center delivers annual show

by Angela Szymczuk

T

he dances are coming. On January 31, Skookum Jim’s annual Folklore Show will be take place at the Yukon Arts Centre. The vibrant show will feature many First Nation dances and songs. Doris McLean, of Carcross/Tagish First Nation, is now the vice president of the friendship centre, but she was the program coordinator for 30 years. She enjoys bringing the culture of First Nations to the people of Whitehorse. The history of Skookum Jim goes back to the gold rush. Back then he went by the name of Keish. He got his nickname from to his massive strength (‘Skookum’, meaning strong). A member of the Tagish First Nations, he is often accredited for being one of the people to discover gold in the Yukon. Skookum died in 1916, but First Nations people want his legacy to live on. In 1962, the Skookum Jim Friendship Center was built in Whitehorse, as a place for all First Nations people. In 1972, McLean became the program coordinator. “I wanted aboriginal arts, crafts and culture to be shown, that’s part of the reason why the Folklore Show was created,” she says. When McLean was busy organizing the show, she also spear-

pride and recognition. I am really glad that the Skookum Jim Centre was able to be a part of that,” she says. McLean herself has also been part of the dances. She has performed in the Northwest Territories at the Northern Games, and in Edmonton at the Commonwealth Games. Through her years as program coordinator she oversaw 100s of kids perform. Now, her daughter Marilyn Jenson performs with the Dakhká Khwáan dancers. Traditionally, the Folklore Show takes place during the Sourdough Rendezvous. Before the Yukon Arts Centre was created, the show would be held at different schools in Whitehorse. Aboriginal dances are the centre point of the Folklore Show. First Nation dance groups from the Yukon, Northwest Territories and even Alaska have come to perform throughout the years. One of the most popular dances performed is the Grouse Dance. It is performed by children, and depicts a love story. On January 31, this dance, among others, will be performed at the Folklore Show. “I wish everyone a happy, happy Sourdough Rendezvous, I hope everyone has a good time, and enjoys bringing back the old times. It’s a great way to bring people together and show support.” For tickets, visit the Yukon Arts Centre box office.

Yukking It Up for a Cause Comics set to stand and deliver for prostate cancer awareness at Yukon Convention Centre by Ken Bolton

K

atie-Ellen Humphries has one clear goal in mind this week when she makes her second trip to Whitehorse. “Now that I’ve been up there and I know what’s going on, I think this is the year I try to get into the Snowshoe Shufflers,” the Vancouver comedian quips. “I know they’re a tight-knit group, and I’m sure there’s some rehearsals and things that I’ve missed, but I have a lot of heart.” Humphries is one of three comics who will perform at the Yukon Convention Centre this Thursday and Friday at a fundraiser sponsored by the local chapter of Ride for Dad. Since 2010, the volunteer organization has been raising money to support prostate cancer research and build public awareness of a male-specific disease many people feel uncomfortable discussing. As anyone who has seen or heard Ride for Dad’s advertisements can attest, the national non-profit organization often employs humour to sell a serious message. This is the second year the local group has augmented its annual June motorcycle ride through southern Yukon by hosting an evening with professional comics from the Yuk Yuk’s stable of touring performers. “Last year, we had 260 seats available, and we weren’t really sure how it was going to go,” ad-

mits Leah Verishine, one of the event’s organizers and a founding member of Ride for Dad Yukon. “As it turned out, we sold out of those tickets in 10 days. It blew us away.” This year, instead of two comics, the group decided to book three and switch venues from the Coast High Country Inn to the convention centre. “We have a capacity of 550 people over there, and we sold out the Thursday night this year in five days,” she adds. Fortunately, all three performers were available for a second show the following night. Besides Humphries, who will return as host, the roster includes comedy veteran John Beuhler and relative newcomer Garrett Quinton, also from Vancouver. “Garret is going to be the feature act. He’s one of the top young talents in town, with kind of an off-kilter observational style,” Humphries says. “He’s just so funny. He really tickles me.” Humphries calls Beuhler “one of the best joke writers working today,” whose credits include working with the likes of Dennis Miller, Zach Galifinakis, Joan Rivers, Craig Ferguson and Brent Butt. “John is definitely someone who has the ability to go after some pretty risqué topics, but because he is so funny, he can always leave you laughing no matter how

uncomfortable the subject matter may be,” Humphries says. Before moving to Vancouver and teaming up with Yuk Yuks, Humphries developed her comic chops as a member of the Victoriabased Atomic Vaudeville troupe, whose shows Ride the Cyclone and Legoland have both played in Whitehorse. Working with that company, she says, taught her a lot about not being too “precious” about her material. “The audience is ultimately the final word on what isn’t funny. If

it’s not working, you’ve got to let it go, even if it’s something you think is really great,” she says. “That was a wonderful lesson that I picked up from them, and it helped, because sometimes you might have a joke that you think is absolute genius, and it proves not to be the case.” The former marathon swimmer with self-described “cavernous dimples” has a word of advice for Whitehorse audiences. “You might want to do a couple of sit-ups in advance, because your stomach will definitely hurt

“Splintered Craft” Art Space Now Open by Nicole Bauberger

T

he Skookum Jim Friendship Centre is providing wellknown Yukon artist Joseph Tisiga with a chance to undertake an exciting project that’s close to his heart. Splintered Craft, a drop-in art studio for youth, is now open in Yukon Plaza across from Tags, at 4230 4th Avenue. But get in there soon; its current funding only lasts till March 31, 2015. Splintered Craft aims to enrich life for people between 16 and 25 years of age, but anyone who’d like to come by and become part of the art community is welcome. Tisiga, the supervisor of the emergency youth shelter at Skookum Jim, mostly coordinates the staff and space for that shelter, which provides beds for young people aged 17 to 24, who need a place for the night. He’s also the acting coordinator for Splintered Craft. Its genesis is a story about seizing opportunities within short timelines. Marney Paradis, the executive director of Skookum Jim, found a call for submissions from the B.C. Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres, and put it out to her coordinators. Tisiga recalls her saying: “If anyone’s interested, go for it.” Tisiga responded. He applied in early December. He leapt at the chance to do so -- he had wanted to put together a youth art space for a long time, so he had the vision. He had a week to figure out budgets, get the proposal reviewed by board members, and coordinate partnerships with other organizations in town, including the Northern Cultural Expressions Society, the Boys and Girls Club, YuKonstruct, and Many Rivers. This wasn’t so hard — everyone was really excited about it. “I knew the turnaround was fast, but I thought, it’s worth taking a shot,” he says. Tisiga figures he operates better under pressure. Having put together grant applications for his own art projects at the last minute, he knew how to imagine a project in an abstract way with-

out having the physical elements present yet. For art grant applications, you have to “tell them what the work is before you make it.” Writing a grant includes telling enough of a story that the jurors can imagine it, about something whose details you will figure out along the way. He found out on December 19 that his vision was a go. Tisiga aims to create the atmosphere and resources for people to come in and try out art projects, including older people and families as well as his target 16-to-25 urban demographic. “If they don’t have experience, or if they don’t have space, hopefully in the creation of that environment, people will acquire some new skills, broaden awareness of their own skills and what they’re capable of, in their own time,” he says. Splintered Craft offers an alternative space for young people to come in, hang out, and avoid partying. “It’s my personal opinion we need more going on for that demographic of youth who may not have a lot of spaces to hang out in and so get hooked into drinking and substance use; we need a space to go and be collective and not get into that whole darker side of socializing.” A “youth-led philosophy” will shape programming in the space. Tisiga hopes to bring in artists to teach young people art forms that interest them. Staff will facilitate youth art projects, bringing in materials and mentors as is useful. “We’ll have to see what that actually looks like — that’s the philosophy — we have to discover the reality.” Tisiga has hired Jona Barr, who plays in the band Old Cabin, and Aimée Dawn Robinson, who was a co-organizer for Nuit Blanche last summer. Tisiga believes that having a personal art practice is “stabilizing”, whether or not it becomes part of a person’s career. Tisiga is a new dad —- his son Novak was born eight months ago. “Next to becoming a father, art

making is one of the most impactful things I’ve ever been a part of.” While current funding will only support the space until March 31, Tisiga hopes that if it’s successful he can keep it going somehow. Doors opened Monday, January 19. When we spoke, the space

was still in “setup mode”, and Tisiga planned to work through the weekend to have things ready. Splintered Craft is open Monday to Friday from noon to 8 p.m. At the time of the interview, Saturday hours were still to be determined, with Tisiga hoping for a later closing time.

To find out more, and how you can be part of Splintered Craft, visit the space, or look for its Facebook page. Also keep an eye out for an open house mid-February. Nicole Bauberger is a painter, writer and performer living in Whitehorse.
