ometimes I’m asked how I deal with writer’s block.

Usually I tell the inquirer that I can’t afford to get it; that writer’s block is a luxury for hobbyists, not fledgling wordsmiths racing neck-and-neck with the poverty line.

But here’s my confession; I say that mostly because I think it sounds cool, not because it’s 100 per cent honest. It’s certainly true that I can’t afford to give up and take a nap, but writer’s block does strike occasionally. In fact, I cured my last bout about 10 minutes ago.

I think the root cause of such mental constipation is the realization that I don’t know what to write about followed by a feeling of heavy panic. Panic prompts block, which prompts more panic, which prompts more block.

When I’m in the middle of an episode it’s not a pretty sight; I get up, I sit down, I mutter to myself, I pull my hair, I look in the fridge, I cruise YouTube, I pace back and forth with an unfriendly expression on my face. When it gets really bad I just start staring at different objects in my environment

Writer’s block is always lurking while my inner dialogue plays: “Clocks. What do you know about clocks? Not much. Can you make clocks interesting. Probably not. Okay, toasters. What do you know about toasters? Even less than clocks. You burned yourself on a toaster once, can you write about that? No. That would just be stupid. You’re stupid. Your sock has a hole in it. You should have taken business in college.”

A few months ago I wrote an essay about a cobra and a mongoose that was a direct result of the above-mentioned method. As if by magic, as the deadline ap-

proaches something always twigs.

I don’t know how the psychological mechanisms work, but luckily they always seem to for me — just in the nick of time.

However, once writer’s block has been conquered the scribe must be careful not to acquire the opposite affliction; literary diarrhea.

Literary diarrhea is characterized by an author’s tendency to natter on, to beleaguer the point, to be long on wind, to give too many examples, to pontificate uselessly, to say the same thing over and over again in slightly different words, to be seemingly clueless about the reader’s desire to finish the article, to retread old territory, to linger over a small detail that isn’t really the main thrust of the story anyway and to just not shut up when he should.

Not wanting to be accused of such a crime-of-letters I hereby pledge that this sentence (the one I’m writing right now) will be the last one in this piece.

So there.

Breakdancing is Still Cool Breakdance Yukon Society’s alumni win competition in Calgary

omehow the days of popping a mixed tape into the ghetto blaster and breakdancing on a cardboard box slipped away.

But breaking never died, it just slipped underground, simmering as a sub-culture in the shadows of slickly produced top 40 songs that dominate the music scene.

Since the 1980s the terminology has changed as each new crop of dancers have been learning the moves and the culture of hip hop, graffiti, DJ-ing and MC-ing.

Now, breakdancing is called breaking. The dancers who do it are called b –boys and b-girls.

Far, far north of the birthplace of hip hop and breakdancing, Whitehorse is the home to a seasoned crew of six dancers who just won the title at a breaking battle on Feb. 2. And there are 90 more b-boys and b-girls getting into breaking.

It started 14 years ago when Leaping Feats Creative Danceworks Studios started offering lessons. Simpson-Fowler saw girls getting inspired by ballet and jazz and other types of dance, but boys weren’t as much. She wanted to get boys excited about dance, too, so that they could have the benefits that come from getting inspired by something, flexing their physical creativity, developing people skills and feeling like they’re a part of something.

“I remember sitting here and we had our first class of young boys and I started to cry – there was 10 boys in front of me dancing and loving dancing and it was an epiphany for me,” she says. “As human beings we have this innate desire to dance and in western culture we have a habit of oppressing that in boys. There’s a negative stigma there – I don’t know if it’s a homophobic attitude or what.

But I found the key to opening that up, I figured out that through breaking this is what young men need to express themselves and be physically creative.”

The breaking classes were working for the boys – and their fathers.

in the studio each year – and it’s something that dads can get behind,” she says. “This is stereotypical, but in a hockey culture, breaking is still macho enough, it’s physical enough, that dad’s can get behind it.”

The instructor currently teaching breaking at the studio is a renowned b-boy named B-boy Thaiyo, from South Korea.

“His crew won Battle of the Year in 2005, which is the international championship,” SimpsonFowler says.

Thaiyo took time out from teaching to join Ben Robinson and the Whitehorse-based crew called Groundwork Sessions (GWS) at the 5 Kings competition in Calgary on Feb. 2. Which they won.

“Five Kings was my first win ever,” he says. “It felt amazing, and is still sinking in weeks later.

It’s only motivated to me push harder and keep doing what I love to do.”

Robinson and his brothers Nick and Alex, Jordan Reti, George Rivard and Riley Simpson-Fowler range in age from 19 to 24 and have been developing their technique and competing in battles as GWS since 2003.

part of breaking is the creative aspect.

“Once the movements become natural, it is easy and welcoming to get lost on the music and just dance,” he says.

The effects of breaking extend past the dance floor and into his everyday life, too.

“Group cohesion, marketing your image, importance of giving back to your community, leadership, goal setting… I find the experiences I have had help me in most endeavors,” he says.

The GWS crew are gearing up for more battles, competing in Seattle in April and Montreal in May. But that’s not really enough adrenaline for Robinson.

“Hopefully there’ll be some local competitions in between,” he says.

Breakdancing Yukon Society will be showcasing their talent at the Yukon Arts Centre on May 30 to June 2 at the Dance Through Life performance and July 26-29 at the Cypher Fest, which is an urban dance festival.

ood banks often start with the churches, which are acting out their faith’s instructions to look after the poor.

In Dawson, the Transients’ Dinners that take place during the month of May are run by all the churches working together, using the available space and kitchen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church to make sure that summer workers, many of whom arrive without a lot of resources, get at least one good meal a week during the first month of each summer season.

Working on a smaller scale, St. Paul’s Anglican Church has a program called the Deacon’s Cupboard, which provides a limited food supply for people — mostly men — who are temporarily down on their luck.

The biggest food bank program in the town was run for about two decades out of the Dawson City Women’s Shelter. For many years this served both men and women, but just over a year ago, distribution of food hampers to men was shifted to St. Paul’s and amalgamated with the Deacon’s Cupboard program.

As of last fall the entire program has been transferred to the Dawson Community Chapel on Fifth Avenue, just across the street from the Gold Rush Campground.

Maria Nyland, one of the people running the operation, says her congregation collectively decided to get involved.

The church converted one of its Sunday school rooms into a storeroom. It is securely locked up when not in use, but it contains a couple of large freezers and floorto-ceiling shelves of canned and dry goods.

Mining and exploration camps donated their surplus supplies in the fall. The grocery stores made donations. There was a grant from the City of Dawson. The Pioneer Women of the Yukon donated funds towards the purchase of a freezer.

“It’s been amazing, the support of the community and people wanting to get behind it,” Nyland says. “I think it’s an outlet for people wanting to do charity and to do it in Dawson.”

Allan Benjamin, food bank will respond to emergency situations, Tuesdays from noon to 5 p.m. are the regular hours and they encourage people to plan for that.

Nyland says that the weekly use of the food bank varies widely.

“Some weeks there’s no one and then the next there are 15 or 20 people,” she says. “We try to give two or three days worth of food and encourage people to make monthly visits.”

The Women’s Shelter still has some involvement, handling the annual distribution of food hampers that has become part of the pre-Christmas season here — with food being collected at all the schools and churches.

Taken together, its clear the Klondike community tries to care for those who need some extra help.

Special Olympian Brings Back Hardware Michael Sumner captures silver at the World Games Sumner. “We even had Michelle Kwan skate for us at the closing ceremonies. Plus we had awesome uniforms to walk into opening ceremonies with. The red sunglasses were the best part.”

Those sunglasses appear to be one of the only pieces of Sumner’s Team Canada uniform that made the return trip with him.

“I made a lot of great friends at the games,” he says, “and we decided to trade uniforms — I traded

both my jackets and my pants for gear from Nepal, Korea, and Turkey.”

Sumner says that his world games experience ensured that he will continue to commit training time to the sport.

“I think I’ll compete in figure skating until I’m 50,” he muses.

That said, as Special Olympics Yukon gears up to focus on summer sports for the next couple of years, Sumner does plan to split

his ice time with the soccer pitch.

“I’m really excited to be going to Abbotsford for the Summer Special Olympics Provincial Games with my fellow teammates later this year,” he says. “The chance to share the experience of a games with my best friends will be awesome.”

t’s not every day that a Yukon figure skater is named to Team Canada for the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games. For that athlete to win a silver medal is a very proud moment and that is exactly what 15 year old Michael Sumner did in Pyeonchang, South Korea this month.

Sumner joined 101 athletes from across Canada to compete against a competition of more than 3,000 other athletes from around the world, all convening in South Korea from Jan. 29 to Feb. 5.

“The experience was exciting and amazing,” Sumner says. “Although I was a little bit nervous before I stepped out on the ice.”

After his compulsory elements skate, Sumner was ranked fifth.

“My roommate (Marc Theriault from British Columbia who was skating in his seventh world games) really helped me to focus for my free skate,” he says. “The night before the competition he told me to dream about skating perfectly… and I did!”

Sumner won his level one free skate competition, garnering him the silver medal for his overall performance at the games.

Team Canada as a whole scored impressive performances. The

120-person team came home with 44 gold, 44 silver and 21 bronze medals.

Sumner stresses that although the medal was awesome it wasn’t the best part of the experience.

“Meeting new people and trying new food were the most exciting parts, although some of the food was a little spicy for me – oh and I got married,” he says with a laugh. “Three days ahead of the opening ceremonies we got the chance to take part in a series of cultural events, including experiencing a traditional Korean wedding ceremony – so I got ‘married’ to my fellow Team Canada member Sara McKelvie.”

The Canadian athletes made sure to give something back to their generous hosts during the cultural program.

“We performed a skating show for them — which was really fun — and then they took us to a set of hot springs, which was even better,” Sumner says. “They also taught us to dance Gagnam Style,” he laughs.

After their three-day cultural program the athletes were treated to a spectacular opening ceremonies.

Kitchen Sink Wines

W

ith the exception of New Years Eve, I think I drank two glasses of wine in January — not propitious behaviour for a wine writer. I even missed having something nice for my birthday, but I guess the flu followed by pneumonia is a decent excuse. I even managed to lose 10 pounds, which under other circumstances would have been a good start on a New Years resolution.

Now my taste for wine has returned and I wanted to share with you my fondness for wines that I like to think of as (everything but the) kitchen sink wines.

The style for the past 20 years has been to move towards singlegrape wines. Where our parents drank wines like Bordeau or Burgundy or Chianti, which were blended with multiple grapes and named after their regions of origin, we live in a time where the labels say Merlot or Sauvignon

Blanc or Viognier.

There are some very good things about this trend. For example, we can begin to identify wines of particular grapes that we enjoy. I love old vine Zinfandels.

These spicy, red, California treats are made from zinfandel grapes grown on vines that are often 50 years old, or older and the concentrated, fruity, spicy taste is one of my favourites to sip, or serve with grilled meats.

Unlike a blended wine, where a talented wine maker can improve a sub-par grape by mixing in several other grapes, a single-grape wine must sink or swim on it’s own merit. This can be very good. Consider a fine Cabernet Sauvignon, which may sell for multiple hundreds of dollars per bottle.

However, in some cases it’s disappointing, as I have found any number of California or Australian Chardonnays to be.

Recently, I have seen a reversal

of this single grape wine pattern and a celebration of blending the grapes again.

Part of the art of the wine maker in our parents’ era was the blending and balancing of different amounts of different grape juices, to find that perfect balance of taste. When achieved, it almost seems like the wine is playing with your tongue, landing in one place, then another and filling your mouth with a rich fusion. It’s a bit like hearing a chord, rather than a single note of music – but the chord needs to be harmonious in order to be pleasing.

I am enjoying the trend where wine makers are mixing together multiple grapes and turning out some very approachable and fine wines.

This 2010 vintage from the Columbia River Valley is particularly appealing to me because, unlike most recent kitchen sink wines, such as Ménage a Trois, that are coming out of California, this one comes from Washington State.

The 14 Hands wine makers blended Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Mourvedre among others and aged them for six months in French and American oak barrels to make an appealing, fruit-filled wine with both the dark fruit taste of plums and bright red fruit flavours of currants and cherries.

With low tanins (that mouth puckering feel), it is an excellent wine to pair with cheese and crackers, pork roast, or (not too spicy) pasta dishes.

So give this wine a try, I suspect you’ll like it. I’ve already had friends come down from Haines Junction looking for it and rav-

Not Every Silver Lining Leaves You Satisfied

Bradley Cooper’s new movie plays at the Yukon Theatre

I

wanted to like Silver Linings Playbook more than I did, and really anticipated seeing it when it came to Whitehorse, two months after its release practically everywhere else.

It has eight Oscar nominations going for it, plus a solid cast of Robert De Niro, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. The film also deals with a theme of some professional interest to me — mental illness.

Yet the film fell flat about halfway through.

Silver Linings Playbook features Bradley Cooper as Pat Solitano, a Philadelphia resident who has just been released from a mental institution in Baltimore.

We never really get to find out what avocation Pat pursues when he’s not busy being a mental pa-

tient. But he plays his role to the hilt, waking up his parents in the middle of the night to loudly criticize an Ernest Hemingway novel, or running through the house at a similar hour in a frantic search for his wedding video.

The immediate cause of Pat’s consternation is the discovery of his wife Nikki in the shower with the history professor at the local school where she teaches English. After attempting to beat his rival to a pulp, Pat is confined for treatment, with a restraining order that’s been issued upon his release.

He believes he can reconcile with his wife, and has long monologues with himself on the subject.

One day while he’s out doing his daily run, he literally bumps

into Jennifer, an attractive neighbour who also has a mental health history to cope with.

Jennifer is acquainted with Nikki through her sister, and Pat tries to talk her into delivering a letter to his wife.

Jennifer agrees, but only after extracting a promise from Pat to be her partner at an upcoming ballroom dancing competition.

And that’s where things started falling off the rails.

Pat’s father has become the neighbourhood bookmaker after being fired from his job. He’s a rabid Philadelphia Eagles football fan, and believes that his son has the ability to bring his team luck. This means going to a crucial home game for the Eagles on behalf of his father, who’s banned from the stadium.

Pat’s divided loyalties to Jennifer and his dad bring the whole dramatic endeavour crashing down to the level of a TV sitcom.

A Sign of the Times

Full-time sign language interpreter opens doors and dialogues

ne conversation can change everything.

Now, thanks to the services of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter Amanda Smith, the gulf of silence between members of the deaf community and the hearing community is being spanned, one interaction at a time.

Smith has been working as the Yukon government’s first full time, registered sign language interpreter since September. Previously, interpretation was provided on an ad hoc basis to the estimated 18 members of the deaf community. Yukon is a pioneer in providing interpretation free for nearly any purpose.

Smith first began learning ASL as a girl in Vineland, Ontario and became proficient in her teenage years. She later went on to do several years of interpretation training.

“After finishing school, my goal was always to work in a community,” Smith says. “Before coming here, I spent a few years working in communities across northern BC.” And every place is different “With different ages come different dialects, so the dialect depends on where they were raised, if they were raised orally,” says Smith. “ASL is not universal and the dialects in Canada vary between the east and west.”

As an interpreter, she is constantly adapting not only to a community, but to each individual. “With every client your signing changes to meet their needs,” she says. “Some people might want you to mouth a little bit, other people might not want it at all.”

Smith’s position in the government is being funded as a twoyear trial and her services are being closely tracked and categorized.

One such category is medical needs, which consists of interpretation services during health related appointments and procedures. Then there’s interpretation for employment, which helps people gain and maintain a job.

The third category is quality of life assignments. This refers to any of the interactions people face throughout their day — doing banking, buying a television, seeing a lawyer.

“It’s the small interactions that really make a difference,” says Smith. “Like if you need to have

We take those things for granted.”

Smith has even provided interpretation services at a concert.

She and a few other interpreters signed the entire performance of the Grand Ole Northern Opry in December after obtaining the lyrics in advance.

“It was a bit of a challenge to get it all organized,” Jon Breen, manager of Disability Employment, recounts. “But the response from the deaf community was great. Some of them said they’d never been to a concert before.”

Neal Bird was at that concert.

For Bird, who has been deaf since birth, it was a stunning experience. “(The lyrics and signs) matched

so well,” says Bird. “It was awesome the way the interpreters were signing the music.”

Though Bird hasn’t found being deaf in the Yukon particularly difficult, he acknowledges that a full-time interpreter is a huge benefit to the deaf community.

“I’ve used (the service) a lot,” he says. “It’s really inspiring to have the option of an interpreter.

It’s very important.”

Smith made a particularly favourable impression when she accompanied Bird to a doctor’s appointment for the first time.

“She did a really impressive job,” he says.

Interpreters can generally do up to fours hours of interpretation per day. In a typical day, Smith can take a wide variety of assignments, but she has to be aware of her limits.

“There is mental and physical fatigue,” Smith says. “Interpreters are prone to carpal tunnel and tendonitis. For one interpreter working alone in a community, you have to make sure you’re monitoring your body and mind.”

Interpreters must also be prepared to deal with issues of ethics. For example, an interpreter may be aware when one person is withholding information. Her task, however, is not to become a third party in the conversation, but to interpret what is said as accurately as possible.

Another important role is to bridge the cultural differences between the deaf community and the hearing.

“You’re interpreting language and facilitating communication, but under that umbrella you’re interpreting culture as well,” says Smith. “Sometimes you might see misunderstandings that don’t result from the interpretation of language, but through the difference in culture. You’re always interpreting meaning and the cultural meaning of things.”

As Breen says, “Having interpretation has probably been even more meaningful to the hearing community as it has been to the deaf community in terms of opening their minds up to what their experience has been.”

Smith is also offering sign language classes. A different member of the deaf community attends each class.

“By the end of the course, the people attending will have met a large number of the deaf community and will be comfortable interacting with each other and hopefully this will build understanding between the two communities,” Smith says.

couple boarding passes and a rental car and before I knew it I was back in Ontario after my junket to Minnesota.

Duntroon. Ever heard of it?

There’s a cornfield, a liquor store and some pretty decent ski trails.

It’s a few hours north of Toronto, in the middle of nowhere. My favourite thing in this place is the wild turkeys. I can’t wait until turkeys work their way up to the Yukon. Like a tourist to the Yukon marvels at ravens, I find turkeys to be both fascinating and tasty.

When I’m on the road I have to enjoy the small things because it’s easy to wonder why I’m in a place called Duntroon in mid-January.

However I came here to race, not to spot fowl.

Classic sprint day!

Your average sprint course has a good amount of up, down, up, down. But this was no average sprint course, more of an up, flat, down, flat. In other words, easier.

Wax helps a skier to go up hills but will actually be slower on flats

and down hills. So in this case I opted to use skate skis with no wax. Classic skiing without wax is like riding a bike but only being able to use your highest gear. I struggled on the up hills but made up time on the flats. It wasn’t a great day for me but it was my first time ever going wax-less in a classic race and I love trying new things.

The following day I placed 12th out of the 100-plus skiers in the 15-kilometre skate race, a little better.

But as quickly as I had arrived in Duntroon, I was leaving, this time destined for a somewhat more cosmopolitan town in Ontario, Ottawa. Ottawa holds at least one major ski event each year.

Earlier in January our nation’s capital received record snowfalls.

It’s a good thing too, because shortly after I arrived, rain cut that snowfall in half. I was getting pretty tired of rain in winter.

With PistenBully groomers and snow machines hard at work, the trails weren’t half-bad and races

went on as planned.

Another classic sprint, this time it was wax all the way and it worked out well for me — 6th place.

Best result of the year, moving on up.

After that, I had a 15-kilometre skate and a 30-kilometre classic.

The last race came as a relief.

After five weeks on the road, racing several times a week, it was finally home time. Racing myself into the ground and travelling has taken a toll on my body.

It’ll be good to do some nice, easy training in Whitehorse to build up some strength before Western’s.

I haven’t skied on trails this nice since I was home for Christmas. Mount Mac, Mount Lorne, grab you’re skis, get out there.

Trust me, you won’t find better trails anywhere in Eastern Canada.

Sleeping Outdoors

T

it sheds the perspiration from our body through evaporation. Silk is good for the same reason. Some of the manufactured materials work but the natural materials seem to be best.

Keep a pair of fresh wool socks to change into. A toque or balaclava will keep all that body heat from escaping from your head, which is usually outside the sleeping bag. If you go to bed chilled or have trouble keeping warm feet put an air actuated hand or foot warmer inside each sock. They stay warm for approximately six to eight hours, so that should get you through the night.

Sleeping bags can ice up due to warm, moist breath. Like it or not, you perspire and that puts moisture into the bag as well.

Pound for pound, down is probably the best insulator but it is the loft (puffiness) of the down that keeps the heat in. After a couple of nights of absorbing moisture, the loft of a down bag can diminish

rappers and dog mushers have always slept out in the cold and with a few exceptions have done well. I got my start in occasionally sleeping outdoors in the winter in 1998 during a winter hunting season for bison.

A lot of hard lessons were learned and planning and preparation swiftly became more important.

A few hardy types slept in unheated three or four season tents, while the majority of us camped in wall-tents with wood-stoves to keep the chill as low as possible.

The wall-tent stove traditionally keeps the tent either very hot or very cold, with little in between.

Because of the extreme cold that sneaks into the tent when the fire dies, some thought needs to be put into what to wear to bed, the right sleeping bag and the right insulation from the ground beneath.

Wool itches too much for many of us to wear next to our skin, however Merino wool does not itch and being a natural material

visibly and affect how warm you are in the bag.

The manufactured fillers are somewhat bulkier and are not as likely to be affected by that level of moisture. With either bag they should be aired each morning to minimize dampness. A bag liner — often fleece — adds to bag warmth and is easier to air each morning. If you don’t have, or can’t afford, one of the high-tech bags you can improvise by using two lesser bags inside one another.

Whether you sleep on a cot or a bed on the floor, a closed cell (Ensolite) pad is essential. These pads do not allow the heat from your body, nor the cold from the

The Tradition of Trek Snowmobilers trace a line between Tok, Alaska and Dawson City

T

here are no roads out of Dawson City in the winter, save to Whitehorse, except during Trek Over the Top. For the past 20 years teams of snowmobilers have resurrected the frozen Taylor/Top of the World Highway between Tok, Alaska and Dawson City, Yukon. They trace a 320 kilometre line between the two towns.

Trek Over the Top has its origins in a 1993 run made by a group of snowmobilers over the Top of the World. Eric Zalitis, at the time stationed in Dawson with the RCMP, thought that there was potential for this to become more.

“It was quite the scene as I don’t think anyone had done this before in such a group,” says Zalitis. “That summer contact was made with the organizers, who were with the Alaska Trailblazers from Tok. It was decided that this could work in a more organized fashion.”

Starting in 1994, the Trek included events in Dawson at the end, with Trekkers staying two nights in town. The Klondike Visitors Association opened Dia-

mond Tooth Gertie’s for the occasion and the Dawson City Firefighter’s association held a barbecue.

“In 1995 interest was huge and we expanded from a two night stay to a three night stay,” remembers Zalitis. “We expanded to two runs and then in our heyday we had three runs. The largest group we had was 640 persons.”

After 18 years of organizing the Trek, Zalitis and his wife Laurie passed responsibility to the Klondike Visitors Association. This year it has fallen to Rachel Wiegers and Paul Robitaille to make it happen.

“I think with any event there’s always hiccups, but it’s been great,” says Wiegers. “We really enjoy working with our Alaskan neighbours and this is the biggest event we organize.”

For a city like Dawson with a population of 1,319, such an event is massive. The Trek provides an inflow of tourist dollars but economics isn’t the reason this event has lasted two decades.

“They are here for a good time and of course they spend a lot of money,” says Wiegers. But some of these guys have been on 19 treks.

“There’s a section called the Terrible Terrace and it’s notorious for being windy,” says Robitaille.

“We groom the trail, but it blows over and becomes a sheer-angle drop-off that even experienced riders have difficulty with. This woman broke her ankle and had to get medi-vaced out. I thought, no way is she coming back. But then last year she called us and said ‘You know, my leg is healed and I’m getting married now. I want to come back and get married at Trek.’ And so she got married on the stage at Gertie’s.”

This year nearly two hundred riders will make the eight-hour trip and each rider will be greeted personally when they come into town. The $525 entrance fee for the Trek gets fuel for the ride, accommodations in Dawson, meals and entertainment.

Klondike legend Gillian Campbell is on the bill this year, among other festivities like the Snowmobile Olympics and the Trek King competition put on by Whitehorse’s Snowshoe Shufflers.

This connection binds through good times and bad.

“Several years ago a very good friend to all, the president of the Alaska Trailblazers, died in a vehicle accident here in the Yukon,” says Zalitis. “We did a memorial run for him and it was the largest ride we ever had.”

The cross-border Trek is made possible through a special agreement by officials on both sides.

The trail grooming is also multinational. The Alaska Trailblazers groom the Taylor Highway section, while the Dawson City Sled Dawgs take care of the Canadian end.

Despite grooming efforts, wind and weather can conspire to make conditions on the trail difficult.

Trekkers have been known to ride with duct-tape covering their faces in order to ward off frostbite. In 1995, a group of 20 riders, now known as the Lost Patrol, split off from the main group and became lost before they were lo-

all over the United States, Canada and Europe. Perhaps the most famous rider was Sarah Palin, who did the run with husband Todd when she was still just the mayor of Wasilla.

“She also did the Sour Toe Cocktail, which never came out during her campaign,” says Zalitis. “We have a couple fellows that have done it every year and they are back for the 20th. A few years back we had three generations of one family attend. One year we asked for all those over the age of 60 to come on stage, we had 25 people up there. I think our oldest person was in his early 80s.”

Perhaps Wiegers sums it up best: “Most of the people who go on the run are characters. They all want a ride, they all want to party.

They all want to have fun.”

This year, Trek Over the Top will have two runs, the first leaving on February 28 and the second leaving on March 7.

Russian Fireballs, Comets and Asteroids

T

his year it appears that we are going to have comets and asteroids aplenty for our viewing and photographic enjoyment.

The first visitor was called a near earth asteroid, named, 2012 DA14. About 45 metres wide and probably made of rock, it passed over Indonesia only 27,500 kilometres from the surface of our planet on February 15. This little asteroid was visible in telescopes as small as three inches.

The great minds of science remind us that a similar-sized chunk of rock slammed into Arizona and made the mile wide gash called Meteor Crater, about 50,000 years ago.

2012 DA14 went sailing between the International Space Station and several earth observation satellites and the much higher band of geosynchronous satellites that provide our weather and telecommunications. Luckily there was no damage and it is now moving out of harm’s way.

Can you imagine what it must have been like to be in Chelyabinsk, Russia on February 15 when a rogue meteor struck our atmosphere at 18 kilometres per second and then broke apart 20 to 25 kilometres above the city.

This meteor weighed approximately 10,000 metric tons, was about 17 metres in diameter and the resulting explosion released the equivalent of 500 kilotons of trinitrotolulene, also known as TNT. Russian authorities report as many as 1,000 people received minor injuries. Most injuries were

due to the effects of the shock wave and not from fragments striking the ground. The shock wave struck the city below, causing thousands of windows to break, walls to collapse and other minor damage to the city.

The internet is chock full of great videos and still pictures of this amazing Russian fireball. In the videos you can hear the sound of windows shattering as the meteor’s loud shock wave smashes into the ground.

This is the most energetic recorded meteor strike since the Tunguska impact of 1908.

Now for a most exciting springtime comet, the Comet PanSTARRS, named after the Hawaiian telescope that originally found it on June 11, 2011.

By March 5, the comet will pass about 240-million kilometres from our planet — about the distance from the earth to the sun.

By March 10 the comet will pass closest to our sun, about 45 million kilometres.

On March 11, scan the western horizon with your binoculars just after sunset. The comet will be very close to the horizon, so choose your observing site accordingly.

By March 12, the comet will rest beside the crescent moon making it easy to locate for an excellent photo opportunity. On March 14 the comet will move into darker skies and by March 16 it will be visible low in the northwestern evening sky for two hours or more.

The Crescent Moon is 1.5 degrees below Jupiter and 2.5 degrees above the bright star Aldebaran in the constellation of Taurus.

Aldebaran and Jupiter are only 5 degrees apart in the evening sky.

March 20 Equinox. Springtime begins!

Full moon.

grouping in the spectacular evening skies. And yes, Comet PanSTARRS will be photogenically resting close to the horizon.

By April this comet will fade as it moves away from the sun. But it will be moving in a northern direction, rising higher into our skies.

So it should be visible in our night skies through April.

In early April this comet is going to be cruising by the Andromeda Galaxy, the brightest galaxy we can see from earth. You will be able to see it easily with the unaided eye, or photograph it with a typical 50 mm camera lens.

A comet and a galaxy in the same picture, most excellent!

Don’t wait for another chance, this comet will not return to our solar system for another 110,000 years.
