’ve only been to New York City once, and it was brief. In August 2010 I landed in LaGuardia airport and needed to make my way to Grand Central Station in order to catch a train to Connecticut — where my cousin was getting married.

As the plane descended the captain came on the intercom and announced that it was 29°C on the ground and the humidity was maxed-out. It was 9:30 a.m.

As the reigning champion of the Nares Lake Whocan-stay-in-theglacial-water-thelongest Derby, my cold weather credentials are beyond reproach, but I absolutely wilt in the heat.

I wandered through the terminal with that stereotypical first-time-in-NYC mix of awe and anxiety; it was written all over my face. By the time I navigated customs and found my way outside to hail a cab, my t-shirt was drenched with perspiration and my man-tits were clearly visible to anyone who cared to look.

Like the Las Vegas strip, television and movies cannot prepare you for the reality of your first trip New York’s Grand Central. The majesty of the huge arched ceilings stand in contrast to the sheer explosion of humanity that plays out on the station floor. There were thousands of people representing every age, racial hue, and other demographically significant category. And they all crisscrossed each other with precise gaits and obvious destinations.

I just stood there and sweated.

After getting my bearings and a Gatorade I managed to locate

My first trip to New York was blistering. a booth that sold the ticket I required; my train was leaving in minutes. I forsook any façade of poise and stumbled pell-mell through throngs of more organized travelers.

I made it to the platform and walked the length of the train looking for any compartment that wasn’t jammed with presumably curt New Yorkers. The luggage I was carrying included an old duffel bag and huge banana crate filled with papermaking material; the whole arrangement was more than cumbersome.

Car after car was packed and I dreaded the inevitable awkwardness of trying to organize and store my belongings in these sardine-like conditions.

But luck can change in a New York minute (whatever that is) and as I neared the end of the train there was one compartment that was only sparsely populated.

Incredulous of my good fortune I rushed in and flopped on a seat, somehow managing to feel victorious and utterly defeated at exactly the same moment.

The reason for all the elbowroom? My chosen train car had a busted air conditioner.

By the time my cheerful Aunt Janice picked me up an hour later I was less a man than a bog. Mosquitoes were spawning larvae on me.

Bellyaching about the weather is one the most universal forms of communication we have, and Yukoners — myself include — indulge in the activity with vigour.

But every time I feel particularly persecuted by a stiff winter’s wind I try to remember that moist day in August.

For this Anglo-Saxon ginger the choice between 30°C in New York City and -30°C in Whitehorse ain’t no choice at all.

A

s nine-year-old Alexis Crystal Jim focuses on picking up a brilliant blue bead with her sewing needle and fastening it to a piece of hide, the women several decades older than her chat and laugh and sew.

And as the time flies by, the little girl soaks up traditional knowledge and the Southern Tutchone language spoken around her.

There, among women supporting her – and supporting each other – she’s also learning about the warm comfort of her kin.

Jim comes with her grandmother to the sewing group, which takes place every Monday and Wednesday at the Champagne

and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) administration building in downtown Whitehorse. The sewing and language class is free to all CAFN members and their families.

Val Fromme is not of First Nation heritage, but her husband is. And so are their children. She feels at home in the sewing circle and over the past few years she has been learning the First Nation style of beadwork.

On Feb. 13 she once again joined the six women at the table for the class she has become so fond of.

“I really like the end product and the process, but I particularly like hanging out with these women

and listening to their stories and learning these new techniques of sewing,” Fromme says.

Jim’s grandmother, Bertha Moose, is an instructor of the sewing group, along with Lorraine Allen.

“They give us this space to revitalize the First Nation traditional artwork,” Allen says. She points to Jim, pulling thread through the thick hide. “She’s learning. And she does a good job.”

Jim’s first project was a beaded leather cardholder for bankcards and such. She gave that one to her Mom, now she’s making one for her aunt and her plan is to make another for her grandmother.

“Then I’m going to sell them,” she says. “I like making projects.

It’s fun.”

“It’s good to see younger kids sew,” Moose says. “That’s how young we started sewing. I’ve been sewing for a long time. I was taught by my grandmother and my mother.”

Then the knowledge started missing generations.

Tina Grant is of Champagne heritage and her great grandmother used to make beadwork,

but she just picked up beading four years ago.

And she’s picked it up in a big way. She has exhausted the local supplies of bead colours and has been ordering them through the internet to get an inspiring new array.

“I’ve invested a lot of money in beads, but I’ve given a lot away as gifts,” she says. “But when I see my work, it gives me more money to buy more beads.”

For Grant beading is not about tapping into the culture of her family, rather, it’s a hypnotic way to pass the time – and create something useful and beautiful.

“It’s just a hobby,” Grant says.

“I enjoy it; it relaxes me. I really love sewing and beading and being productive.”

Three years ago the class started with beginners and now the women are not only giving away their work as handsome gifts, but also selling it and taking custom orders.

The free sewing and language class meets every Monday and Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the CAFN administration building in downtown Whitehorse.

How Safe is Online Shopping?

S ince the inception of e-commerce about 15 years ago, there have been many myths regarding its safety. Online shopping and banking are extremely useful, particularly when you live in a remote location. But, how safe is it?

The short answer is that there are some risks.

However, these are smaller than many people think.

For example, many worry about sending their credit card number through the Internet.

However, these transactions are encrypted using what is called public key encryption.

This works on the following principle: there are two large numbers (128 digits long) used for math calculations that change the information into undecipherable text and then convert it back to readable format.

The undecipherable text is your private key.

When you log into your shopping or bank site, you exchange public keys with the server. Information

sent to the server is encrypted using their public key. Information sent back to you in encrypted using your public key. But because the private key is required to read the information, such transactions are incredibly safe. The possibility that your credit card information can be

Interestingly, people tend to trust debit cards more than credit cards.

However, there are far more cases of fraudulent use of debit cards.

Handling the Quest is a Fine-Tuned Operation

A mid morning arrival in Dawson City is swarmed by Yukon Quest officials, handlers, media and fans.

N

o matter how many words I log here to the contrary, it seems impossible to shake the impression that Dawson City goes to sleep when the tourists leave and, like bears in winter hibernation, only stirs when something happens to disturb its slumber.

If you lived here you’d realize that the schedule can get pretty crowded.

Nevertheless, the accounts of visiting reporters here during the Yukon Quest invariably give the impression that our sleepy town has lurched to life just because they happened to arrive.

One thing is true: the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) has been largely empty for months by the time the Yukon Quest handlers and

media groupies begin to arrive one or two days after the race begins.

What’s Up Yukon’s own Gabriela Sgaga has been busily organizing her volunteer crew for many weeks before this and will run on an absolute minimum of sleep during the week that the VIC is Dawson Quest Central. She’s been a Quest volunteer since 1999.

At the volunteer sign up meeting this year Gaby told my wife, Betty, who loves to donate time to this event, that she’d had way more people signing up than usual.

Things were ready in plenty of time for the actual teams, even though they were a day (at first) and then half another day, ahead of when they were supposed to arrive.

The dog yard was ready in the

Government Campground across the Yukon River. Volunteers were assigned there to help the vet crew, or trained to assist at the finish line in front of the VIC. The chute through which the teams pulled up to the big Yukon Quest banner in order to have all their gear checked before settling their dogs was about 15 metres from the Klondike Sun’s front door in the Waterfront Building and by Wednesday we could no longer use our parking space when delivering our latest edition around the town.

Inside the VIC the tables were crowded with reporters and race watchers, many of them glued to their laptops, watching the live tracking of the teams and making sure their cameras were ready when the next one rolled along the top of the dike trail, moving like a slow locomotive before the dogs dropped down onto Front Street and the glare of the musher’s headlamp resolves into a team and sled in the twilight.

The room would empty in seconds when someone stepped inside to warn of an approaching team.

While waiting, folks could avail themselves of a variety of hot food and snacks from the concession table run by the Percy DeWolfe Committee, which uses this activity as a fund raiser for its own race, the one that will wrap up the mushing season in late March.

The food is first rate, though the ambience of the overheated bodies in too many layers of clothing permeates the VIC and tempts a person to bring some air freshener along. It would be a great place

for one of those blindfold scent commercials that are so popular right now.

The pace increases from Tuesday to Thursday as the teams trickle in. Usually it’s a 36 mandatory layover at the midpoint here, but this year complications on the American side of the trail added another four hours to the stay and kept the VIC in business just a bit longer.

AND DARKNESS THERE’S NONE. KIDS DRINK LOTS OF KOOL-AID AND WE SIT IN THE SHADE. PEOPLE DRINK LOTS OF COKE SO THEY DON’T GET A HEATSTROKE. SOME PEOPLE GO TO SEE THE NURSE ‘CAUSE YOU CAN DIE OF THIRST. KIDS JUMP IN THE POOL THAT’S HOW THEY STAY COOL. WHEN THERE’S A HOT SPELL I WONDER IF IT’S A TASTE OF HELL.

Ghost Story Does A Decent Job of Being Creepy

essica Chastain graces local screens for the second time this month, but on this occasion, the redheaded Oscar nominee is scarcely recognizable.

Decked out in a jet-black wig and sporting a tattoo, she plays Annabel, a punk-band guitarist, in firsttime director Andreas Muschietti’s new horror film Mama.

Taking its original inspiration from a three-minute short, this Canada-Spain co-production was filmed at Toronto Pinewood Studios and on location in Barcelona and Quebec City. It’s been doing fairly well at the international box office since its original release last month.

The film opens on the aftermath of a murder. A man named Jeffrey has just killed two of his business partners and his estranged wife during the 2008 financial meltdown. He is now leaving the scene with his two young daughters, three-year-old Victoria and her infant sibling Lily. Speeding too fast on a snowy Midwest highway, his car overturns and plunges over a ravine. Unhurt, the shaken trio takes refuge in an abandoned summerhouse.

There, Jeffrey prepares to end his life, as well as those of his two young daughters. Just as

he aims his gun at the head of an unsuspecting Victoria as she gazes out the window, an unseen figure intervenes from the shadows, snapping his neck instantly. He’s met his desired fate, but the children are spared. It all takes place quickly, noiselessly.

The girls warm themselves by the fire that their father has built, uncomprehending. The unseen presence tosses a cherry out of the darkness to them for sustenance.

The narrative moves forward five years and trackers that Jeffrey’s brother Lucas has hired find the abandoned children, alive and unharmed. Someone or something has protected them all this time.

But they scarcely resemble the children they were. With no human presence or instruction, the toddlers have become feral, skittering about on all fours and sustaining themselves on moths, insects and the mysterious cherries.

Lucas, with the grudging acceptance of his girlfriend Annabel, fights their great-aunt Jean for custody of the girls. His case is clouded, however, by the bohemian lifestyle the couple lead, prejudicing their perceived ability to raise the sisters.

It soon becomes apparent that the mysterious force which has helped the children survive their formative years has accompanied them to their new home. They call her “Mama” and though the figure is never really seen until the film’s end, its presence is clearly felt.

Moreover, it soon becomes apparent that Mama’s maternal instincts are clashing acutely with the presence of Annabel, as she begins to warm to her new charges.

Mama is a cleverly designed, mostly understated ghost story, without a lot of the gore and mayhem that contemporary examples of its genre seem to thrive on. It builds its suspense satisfactorily and holds its audience well, although it often telegraphs its punches with an annoyingly ominous score and obvious dramatic giveaways like lights mysteriously flickering on and off.

Mama is rated PG-13 and is showing at the Qwanlin Cinema Centre at 6:45 p.m. and 9 p.m.

ake a string quartet: two violins, a viola and a cello.

Imagine it whipping up a challenging entrée of Bach. As side dishes, how about some 1930s-era Glazounov romanticism and a bit of contemporary Canadiana?

A little Zappa for dessert, perhaps.

But first, replace the strings with saxophones.

That’s the menu Whitehorse Concerts has in store for Yukon audiences in early March when the Montreal saxophone quartet Quasar makes its first visit North with a show called From Bach to Zappa. They’ll be playing in Whitehorse on March 2 and in Dawson City on March 3.

Quasar’s artistic director, Marie-Chantal Leclair calls the evening a “discovery program” for people who may not be familiar with this particular brand of music.

“People are not so used to listening to a sax quartet,” Leclair says. “So with this program, you get most facets of the sax ensemble.”

The four members of Quasar are all music graduates from the Université de Montréal who studied under the same teacher.

Since its formation in 1994, the award-winning quartet has introduced some 70 new works by Canadian and other composers to the contemporary music canon.

Two of those pieces, “Levées”

by Gilles Tremblay and “Geyser Ghetto” by fellow Montreal composer Michel Frigon, will be on the Yukon bill of fare.

“Sometimes people don’t really realize the richness of Canadian music,” Leclair says. “We hear about Beethoven, or Brahms and we don’t realize that in Canada we have really strong composers.

“So it’s part of our mandate and we’re really happy to do that.

For me, it’s vital to promote our culture.”

Leclair acknowledges that new music can be an acquired taste — in fact, a composer friend of hers likens it to blue cheese.

“The first time you eat that, you say, ‘Oh, my god’ and then finally you go on to become a big fan,” she suggests. “Also, with blue cheese, you have Roquefort, you have Gorgonzola. Some are soft, some are really strong and so it’s also a matter of developing the taste.”

Quasar is also noted for its imaginative work with live electronics, as well as improvisation and structured improv, much of it complex and demanding.

“We work very hard to learn new pieces, but also to keep them in shape,” she says. “But it’s the same, I guess, with a Bach string quartet. Those are very challenging pieces as well.”

The dynamics of what is essen-

tially a chamber ensemble are different from those of an orchestra, Leclair points out.

“It’s very collaborative,” she says. “It can’t be otherwise. It’s pretty demanding for a musician.

The repertoire is very challenging and so we really need to work together, to be in the same state of mind.”

After nearly two decades of performing together, being what Leclair calls “a family thing” no doubt helps.

In addition to Leclair on soprano sax, the group consists of her brother Mathieu on alto, her husband Jean-Marc Bouchard on baritone and André Leroux on tenor.

Besides the Tremblay and Frigon pieces, From Bach to Zappa includes excerpts from Bach’s The Art of Fugue; Alexandre Glazounov’s Quartet op. 108; Will Gregory’s Hoe Down!; and two works

by American rocker Frank Zappa, Zomby Woof and Black Page #1.

Quasar will appear Saturday, March 2 at the Yukon Arts Centre at 8 p.m., with a pre-concert talk from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It will follow the same format in the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture Ballroom in Dawson City the following evening, beginning at 7 p.m.

Song Rise Filled with Diversity and Talent Yukon Women in Music’s newest CD spans jazz to rock Rose Kirchner eases the listener into this collection. Her introspective lyrics on Fireweed are matched by delicately fingerpicked acoustic guitar.

Claire Ness’s Call of the Yukon follows. While Ness may be better known as clown, she is in full-romantic mode on this song — singing about what draws her back home.

With a throaty and characterfilled voice, she sings, “When the dark nights of winter just aren’t long enough/I long for sundogs howling at the moon.”

Sylvie Painchaud’s Me Voilà, the first of the French language offerings, has a similar substance, though completely different style.

Against a steady crescendo of music built around her piano and versatile voice, she describes how the Yukon gave her the strength to be herself.

Nicole Edwards finds strength

within herself. Living with scleroderma, an autoimmune disease, Edwards sings powerful, positive, heavy rock songs, like I Still Have Something, which can inspire us all to meet adversity and grow from it.

This Road by BJ MacLean follows in complete contrast to Edwards’ song. MacLean sings it with a light vibrato against her delicate acoustic guitar, underscored by light electric guitar provided by Bob Hamilton.

Blue Hibou consists of banjoplaying phenom Kim Barlow and ukulelist Hélène Beaulieu, joined on Courir sur la plage by Micah Smith on lap-steel guitar. It’s a light quirky song, reminiscent of Vaudeville or even earlier, as though Barlow and Beaulieu are reviving a lost art form.

Pourquoi by L. Grace (Lauren Tuck) is a bilingual song, drifting between folk and pop rock and

switching easily between English and French lyrics. The bridge includes a light melodic rap, similar to her other musical project, The Lore.

The album’s jazz number is Fawn Fritzen’s I’m a Fool for You. Her voice is soft, playful and romantic, as is her piano.

One of my favourite artists is brigs (Andrea Burgoyne). With lyrics that rival John K. Samson’s and a powerful backing instrumentation provided by Jordy Walker, her song The Night Wins is huge.

I’m only disappointed that brigs didn’t contribute a new track: I need more of her music.

Sense of Distance by Home Sweet Home matches Kate Weekes’ lyrics with Keitha Clarke and Boyd Benjamin’s fiddles, giving it a down-home feel.

With Slide Over by Brenda Berezan, the compilation returns to rock. This song cruises through the verses, accompanied by Wayne Garrett’s surf-rock guitar solos.

Karen Furlong’s Fear and Common Sense oozes a raw sensuality like early Liz Phair.

Furlong’s voice seduces the listener as she sings, “I bet you’d thrill me again and again and again and again.”

Sara MacDonald’s The Sun Too Will Die, was previously released

by her band, the august arrival.

It’s swirling folk melody and existential lyrics.

Kim Rogers’ I’m the Girl is the compilation’s big finale. With heavy guitars by Rick Santers and Kurt Schefter and Rogers’ passionate voice, the song has a hard edge like Heart in their heyday.

Outstanding Tracks: Courir sur la plage, The Night Wins and I Still Have Something.

ukon Women in Music (YWIM) have released their fourth album, which is as musically diverse as their membership.

Founded in 1998, the YWIM collective brings together female singer-songwriters who pool their talent and resources for concerts and recording opportunities. To date, it has released a live album, a sampler of pre-recorded tracks and a more cohesive album with a backing band. The album Song Rise, released in November, is the YWIM’s second sampler of new and previously released material.

The songs range from folky BAGWAG (boys and girls with acoustic guitars) to heavy rockers, with some jazz in between. This is what you’d expect from women of various age groups, languages, ethnicities and styles. It celebrates the talent and diversity of female Yukon musicians.

U-Brew Basics

N

ot long after I met my partner I bought him a beer kit.

This was in the mid-1990s, when microbreweries were starting to come into their own. I was still drinking Kokanee, but I would often pick up a six pack of Big Rock Traditional Ale as a diversion and because it was hip at the time.

When you grow up in a small town with few choices, beer-isbeer. Brewing our own beer at home changed that. All of sudden there was a wide range of beers we could make – spruce tip ale, porters, extra special bitters, raspberry beer, etc. Brewing our own beer would spawn a deep quest that would take over precious storage space and suitcase volume on vacation.

Some people brew their own beer to get suds you can’t buy locally, others to save a few bucks and others to learn the ancient art of brewing.

Most homebrewers start out making beer using a kit. The main

ingredient will probably be a can of liquid malt extract, which is a really thick syrup. You put the liquid malt extract, corn sugar (because it’s cheap) and water in a large vessel, add dry yeast and leave it alone for a couple of weeks.

Then you transfer the beer to another vessel, stir in a small amount of corn sugar, tap the beer into bottles and put caps on it. The corn sugar is eaten up by the yeast in the bottle and creates carbon dioxide after several weeks.

This method is the simplest one. It rarely results in really good beer, but it will result in something alcoholic that approximates beer.

cidery, over-carbonated stuff that tastes like “yuck.” But if you’re a poor student and somebody offers you a bottle of basement ale at an under-stocked party, you probably say yes. Taste and selectivity are the luxury of the financially secure.

As you become more sophisticated you will experiment with hops, malted grains, heating and cooling systems and other gadgets. But the singlemost important variable to brew decent beer is sanitation. When you start brewing your own, you have to proceed as if there is an organ transplant being conducted in your kitchen.

You can buy beer kits in town, which usually come complete with bad

instructions. If you need the basic brewing equipment try U-Brew Yukon. If you are intimidated by the brewing process, U-Brew will even brew the beer kit for you – all you have to do is add the yeast.

After three weeks, they filter the beer, force-carbonate it and store it in their cooler until you bottle it.

A better option is to start brewing with a buddy and learn together. Beer kits are better if you buy the ones that don’t require the addition of corn sugar, or if you substitute the corn sugar in the recipe with malt extract.

There are a lot of resources on the internet to help you on your way. As with anything, read a lot, ask a lot of questions, but don’t be afraid to just dive right in.

Rendezvous 101 ~ Your Guide to the Subculture of Rendezvous ~

Dropping Your Jeans and Donning Your Petticoats

G

etting out of jeans and into a Gold Rush era gown is a popular part of the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous festival.

So much so that a local dressmaker has developed a collection of more than 600 turn-of-the-century dresses. But Myrna Kingscote doesn’t just dress the ladies, she’s also got another 300 suits for men in the style popular in 1898.

Myrna and her husband Jack have been like an engine generating Rendezvous good times for 32 years, and not just with

This year’s lineup of can-can dancers kick-off the Sourdough Rendezvous at the Westmark Hotel. costumes. Jack organized the air show during Rendezvous for decades and the two are notorious for hosting some pretty rowdy Rendezvous parties at their place.

The costume rooms promise more good times — and women take their time in there.

They’ll try on a dozen dresses/feathers/gloves/hats/purses looking for the perfect outfit.

But when the right outfit comes together, hoots and squeals emanate through the house.

“Jack sits upstairs and listens to me and it’s like I’m doing a jig down here,” Myrna says.

Men, on the other hand, are in and out.

Myrna has developed such a knack for eyeing a gentleman’s size and setting him up that she can suit up a guy within about 15 minutes.

“A man will tell me, ‘Oh, I’m this size of jacket and pant.’ And I’ll look at him and say, ‘Not bloody likely,’” Myrna says.

She’ll then put him in the right size of vest, pants, tails, top hat (or bowler hat for a gambler) and arm band — with enough room to feel comfortable through the Rendezvous week.

A whole outfit for men or women rents for $75 per week.

But for those who want to buy a costume, Adult Temptations sells such party favours as corsets, fishnet stockings and feathers. Feather boas and boys’ top hats and bowler hats can be found at the Great Canadian Dollar Store.

Rent or own, wearing a costume during Rendezvous should at the very least keep you out of the Keystone Kops’ paddy wagon and might even get you into the kind of party that will go down in history.

Keystone Kops Kollect the Delinquent and Donations

ith their black hats, billy clubs and the trench coats covered in buttons, I find the Keystone Kops to be one of the most iconic aspects of the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. Though certainly not a destination in the whole Rendezvous experience, their presence during the week is always felt.

The Keystone Kops are a part of Rendezvous you can’t get away from (unless you have on your garter, beard or button).

They can come for you (remember that co-workers, friends and family can put out “a hit”).

The Keystone Kops can be seen around town “arresting” any “low life gamblers, leggy dancers and wise-cracking miners” they see on the streets not sporting either a beard or a garter and placing them in the mobile paddy wagon pulled behind their car.

I arrived in the Yukon too late to see it, but they used to lock up their guests and parade them around town in the cell as they drove.

You will see the Keystone Kops all over town collecting the delinquent and donations. Freedom can be yours for the purchase of

Keystone Kops roam for the beardless or garter-less delinquents.

The Tao of Rendezvous

S

ure, there is the One Dog Pull, the Yukon Arm Wrestling Championships and the Ice Carving Competition, but for many people the true spirit of the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous still resides far from the sanctioned events.

For these folks Rendezvous is about setting aside adult responsibilities for a weekend, getting together with old friends and trading stories and wise cracks until the hour grows late — and then early again.

For this group of merry-makers, Rendezvous is not something to be attended; it’s something to be catapulted into the centre of.

And of course, the natural habitat for this particular breed of Rendezvous reveler is the bar.

Which bar? It hardly matters.

They are all packed to the gills with good friends and old acquaintances; all eager to have a good time; all excited to be shedding January’s Seasonal Affective Disorder (more colourfully known as Cabin Fever) for the euphoria of palpably longer days.

Taoists have this concept called wu wei. The idea is that one should not hold too tightly to one’s plans and should instead be open to spontaneous action as dictated by the flow of the universe.

Rendezvous weekend is filled with wu wei. If you simply show up at a bar with no preconceived notions about where the night will take you, there is no limit to the possibilities.

outside the Roadhouse, or trying to make a citizen’s arrest of gas thief at 3 a.m., or better yet, sharing a cheap bottle of wine with someone on top of the clay cliffs.

Admittedly, it’s not everyone’s scene, but if you have a few cab numbers memorized and you are open-minded about the possibility of phoning in sick on Monday, the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous can be the first magical adventure of the spring.

rangling a bevy of beautiful can-can dancers and introducing them to the world is a tough job, but Canuck Chuck, aka Charles Frisbee Tiberius Mackenzie, handles his duties with style and grace.

The Rendezvous can-can MC originally hails the small coastal town of Inverness, Nova Scotia.

At a young age Chuck headed to Newfoundland to become a stage man on George Street, St. Johns.

After four years working the George Street saloons the urge to travel hit him once more, so he began his journey west and North, with nothing to his name but a bowler hat and a lucky bow tie previously owned by Fred Astaire, handed down to him by his father.

He worked odd jobs across the country until finally the desire for riches and gold brought him to the Yukon. In his first winter Chuck found the North hard; he was cheechako in every sense of the word.

Then he met Kabin Fever Kate, the can-can manager — she took him in, showed him how to get through those long, dark months and set him up with the gruel-

ling gig of controlling 10 beautiful women with a penchant for trouble.

Now in his second year as the can-can MC, Canuck Chuck declares, “Rendezvous is everything that is wonderful in the world, it is a time to celebrate, to reach out and enjoy simple revelries with your neighbors and friends. It is rare that one can find a festival that reminds you so much of home and still 100 per cent Yukon authentic.

That makes Rendezvous my favourite time of year.”

Part 1 of 2: Nutrition

ome popular nutritional suggestions for preventing cancer include avoiding obesity, cutting down on fat intake, eating high-fibre foods, frequently eating cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage), juicing fresh fruits and vegetables and minimizing salt-cured or smoked foods in the diet.

I have recently done some more extensive research into nutrition and cancer. Here is what I found out.

To maintain an even bloodsugar level and reduce your need for insulin, eat four to five small, healthy meals during the day. Another way to maintain your blood sugar levels, which I find easier, is to choose whole, natural foods and stay away from processed, sugar-laden and white flour products.

Also, sugar and refined carbohydrates are not only hard on our blood sugar levels, but they can directly feed cancer cells according to researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah (Aug. 18, 2009).

Acid-alkaline balance

Our bodies have a very low tolerance range for proper acid-alkaline levels. Various studies done

Creating meals from organic, whole foods – not pre-packaged and prepared foods – helps the body fight cancer for several reasons: stabilizes blood sugar levels, supports alkaline levels, supports immunity and reduces exposure to toxins.

2010 book The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet that to prevent cancer, we need to focus more on eating alkaline-forming foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables and less acidic food, such as meat and processed foods.

Immunity

With a strong immune system, even the few cancer cells that are normally generated by our bodies will be easily removed. Eating to support this system is imperative in cancer prevention.

Nutrient-dense foods such as raw, organic produce, whole grains and legumes are important as well as Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and flax seeds and adequate highquality protein (but not too much).

Toxins

North American diets are typically full of toxins from processed foods, artificial sweeteners, nonorganic meat, dairy and produce, artificial colours and flavours and trans fats.

Our bodies also accumulate toxins through environmental chemicals. We absorb chemicals in the air we breathe, in the water we use daily and the cleaners and other household products we use.

They all add to our toxic load, which accumulates over time.

Elson M. Haas, MD, wrote in his book Staying Healthy with Nutrition that, “Toxic substances . . . have been indirectly linked to many chronic, degenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s, asth-

ma and most forms of cancer.”

Doing regular detoxification cleanses is good prevention against cancer. Adding lots of fibre and water will aid detoxification and is a healthy daily practice.

Supplements

Some supplementation can interfere with cancer treatment, so if you are undergoing a medical cancer program check with your doctor before taking any supplements.

Some of the supplements I’ve learned about that are worth further investigation include the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) vitamin C, wheat or barley grasses, blue-green algae and bioflavonoids (in particular, pycnogenol). Other supplements include melatonin and modified citrus pectin (MCP).

Another book worth noting is The Cancer Prevention Diet by world-renowned Michio Kushi (founder of the Macrobiotics Diet) and dietary counsellor Alex Jack.

Although the dietary suggestions are quite out of the ordinary compared to what we are used to in the west, there is a lot of scientific evidence backing the ideas. There are also helpful and easy-to-read sections on each type of cancer, including what types of foods to eliminate in each case.

Rendezvous’ Mr. and Mrs. Yukon Fit the Bill

Mayo residents Hilda and Wilf Tuck have deep roots in the Yukon

M

ayo resident Hilda Tuck was surprised to hear that she and husband Wilf had been offered the title of Mr. and Mrs. Yukon for the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous 2013.

“I thought Wilf was just pulling my leg when he phoned,” Hilda says.

The news has now sunk in and Hilda says it’s an honour to have been chosen.

As dignitaries, the pair will attend Rendezvous events this weekend and a couple more during the year, such as the Commissioner’s Ball.

The couple are long-time Yukoners and have made their home in Mayo.

Hilda was born at Ft. Selkirk, Yukon to Rachel Baum, granddaughter of Selkirk Chief Hannon, Robert Campbell. Her father is George Dawson, hereditary Chief of the Ta’an Kwach’an.

“We had the best childhood growing up,” she says. “Lots of hard work and hard playing.”

After doing their chores, Hilda and her siblings were free.

“We used to hunt gophers, grouse, and rabbits,” she says.

“We used to walk a mile down to a lake… so we could skate.”

Hilda, who worked as a remedial tutor in the J.V. Clark School in Mayo for many years, remembers in 1945 making the trip to Whitehorse for the Yukon Carnival Week, which was the precursor the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous.

That year she watched the ski races. Two years later she was taking home trophies in two categories, the downhill and the cross-country ski races.

“My love for skiing started when my brother Arthur and I found one ski that someone had thrown away out near my dad’s trap-line,” she says. “For that winter we were adamant that we were going to ski on one ski down the hill. We even-

tually made it. In those days, I always figured anything he could do, I could do. We had fun.”

S i n c e then, Hilda has only missed a few Rendezvous festivals, as she travels to Whitehorse often to participate in Elder Active senior games, and to visit her family.

In 1960, Hilda met Wilf at the Chateau Mayo, where she worked as a server. He remembers ordering pork-chops and receiving spaghetti instead, but the culinary mix-up didn’t stifle things too much. In 1964 they were married.

Wilf was born in Star City, Saskatchewan, and grew up on a farm with two younger brothers, Morley and Wesley.

But like most young people he wanted to travel and see something different. After myriad adventures across Canada he landed in the Yukon.

Wilf worked as a mechanic and welder, hauled fuel and firewood, worked for the Yukon government, and started a business. He spent a number of years mining and found a 9.5 ounce nugget on Empire Creek.

These days Wilf keeps busy running his business in Mayo where he maintains a land treatment facility and specializes in transportation of heavy equipment, road building, assessment work and furnace repair. Wilf is also an oil burner apparatus inspector, journeyman automotive mechanic and a welder. In their

How Did Our Toxic Chemicals Get to the Arctic?

Science Institute hosts free lecture Feb. 26

E

ven a pristine and remote location like the Arctic is not free from contamination. Toxic chemicals, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury, are found in the Arctic — they have arrived from outside sources and researchers are trying to determine how much contamination there is, what the impact is on the Arctic ecosystem and what can be done about it.

The Yukon Science Institute is hosting a free lecture in Whitehorse on Tuesday, Feb. 26 to share research results with the public.

The lecture is called Atmospheric Transport and Transformation of Contaminants in the Arctic.

It will be presented by Hayley Hung and Sandy Steffen, who worked with Environment Canada to conduct research at Alert, Nunavut and Little Fox Lake, Yukon. They will also present measurements taken over the sea ice and from various sites that may be impacting the Canadian Arctic.

POPs and mercury have been the focus of atmospheric research as part of the Northern Contaminants Program and the International Polar Year. For the past 20 years, Environment Canada has been investigating how these contaminants travel on air masses and how they are deposited into the Arctic ecosystem.

Hung and Steffen will present the history of these issues; how the Arctic uniquely treats these toxic chemicals; and what they have been doing to understand how they behave.

And perhaps most importantly, they will present what is being

The Yukon Science Institute (YSI) is a volunteer run, non-profit organization that seeks to promote public awareness about science activities in the Yukon, and to aid and facilitate scientific research and development.

The institute hosts free lectures to the public, on approximately a monthly basis.

YSI was created in 1985 with the objective to “encourage, promote, and support research on scientific, engineering, medical and socio-economic matters that will contribute to the achievement of the social and economic

goals of the people of the Yukon Territory.”

The YSI is hosting the lecture Atmospheric Transport and Transformation of Contaminants in the Arctic next lecture on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. It will take place at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre, beside the Transportation Museum in Whitehorse.

Cruising the Northwest Passage Ruth Armson recounts her voyage to Greenland

I

n September 2012, my friend Sue Langevin and I joined the tour group Adventure Canada, for a voyage called Out of the Northwest Passage.

We began our tour at Kugluktuk (the Inuit name for Coppermine) in the Northwest Territories and cruised through a labyrinth of channels that form a byway across the top of the continent. We continued up Smith Sound to latitude 80°05” N, breaking a record for the tour ship that cruised the farthest North.

Finally, we sailed down the coast of Greenland stopping at numerous communities before reaching our destination: Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. It is a vast, breathtaking land of islands, mountains, tundra, drifting icepacks, Pre-Cambrian and Cambrian rock, glaciers and waterways.

The 118-passenger ship, called the Clipper Adventurer, is registered in the Bahamas and has been refurbished in Scandinavia with an ice-strengthened hull and stabilizers. The captain and rear admiral were from Sweden, and the crew was multi-national.

Believe me my young friends there is nothing — absolutely — half so much worth doing as messing about in boats.

I remember the enormous polar bear in Coningham Bay, the walruses on the rocks, the narwhals near the steep cliffs and Beechey Island with its lonely graves from the Franklin expedition.

I can recall the first trek on the tundra, the cruising in Zodiacs among the gigantic icebergs of Disco Bay, Kane Basin and Karat Fjord and the colourful and steeproofed buildings of Greenland villages.

The otherworldly beauty of Skraeling and Bylot Islands still lingers with me, as does the drumming on the tundra of Devon Island, and the 168-kilometre Sondre Stromfjord, on the west coat of Greenland, with its deep green waters and snowcapped mountains.

Throughout the voyage my appreciation grew for the region’s loveliness, its grandeur, its harshness and the dignity and capability of its people—all of which filled me with a sense of timelessness.

Bathing in the Poetry of the Forest

Yukon poet finding success at home – and in Germany

W

hitehorse resident Clea Roberts is achieving national and international

success with her 2010 book of poetry Here Is Where We Disembark.

Roberts spent 10 years writing the poems and sent the manuscript out to publishers only after she felt the poems were ready as a collection.

The subject matter of the first section of the book is life in the Yukon and northern B.C. When asked about her relationship to nature and to the North specifically, Roberts mentions her appreciation and affinity for “Shinrin-yoku” or Japanese forest bathing, where one spends a short, leisurely time walking through the forest, breathing in and benefiting from the subtle natural aromas of the trees, emerging refreshed and rejuvenated.

“It has also taught me a lot about discipline and gratitude, particularly living in the North, where our winters are so extreme and our wilderness is so vast,” she says.

The Reader’s Guide to Disembark (commonly included in novels for book clubs to use, but rarely with books of poetry) was released this past December. In it, she affirms her connection to the natural world: “I’ve always been interested in the bridges between the natural and the human-made worlds. There is a dynamic force in our relationship with nature that intrigues me. Nature simultaneously ‘contains and expels us,’ as the poet Christian Wiman said. This shifting intimacy is a rich source for my poetry.”

The second section of Here Is Where We Disembark concentrates on the women of the Klondike Gold Rush.

As part of her research for the Klondike poems, Roberts spent a lot of time reading personal letters at the Yukon Archives.

“Having this connection with the women I was writing about, whether they were real or fictional women, helped me to bring more of myself into the poems,” she says.

Currently, Roberts is adapting her poem “Cathedral” to film.

Shifting artistic mediums from the written word to visual images is proving both challenging and a natural fit.

“It’s good and a little frightening to be a beginner again,” Roberts says. “And it is good to find new ways of looking at things, new ways of articulating the essence of a poem. Film and poetry are very compatible because they both use images and sound. But at the same time, film is a completely different creature from poetry — it has its own unique language that operates on a completely different set of rules.”

In March, Roberts is planning a book tour of the eastern provinces. In September 2013, German publisher Edition Rugerup will release a German translation of the book.
