he Overland Trail was a transportation corridor between Whitehorse and Dawson City constructed by the White Pass and Yukon Route at the turn-of-the-century. Spanning about 530 kilometres, it took five days to navigate by horse-drawn sleigh or carriage — if the weather co-operated, that is. If not, the journey could double, or even triple in length. As a survival necessity, roadhouses were built about every 30 kilometres along the route. Here, travellers could get a hot meal, a warm bed, and, I’m willing to bet, a snifter of whiskey if the right person was cajoled. I can picture myself enroute; as a long day comes to an end, I can see myself salivating at the thought of putting my feet up and enjoying a drink in front of a roaring fire. Savouring a libation next to a wood-fueled fireplace used to be commonplace in public houses near and far. Charles Dickens, for

example, reputedly worked on his masterworks in just such conditions. But the encroaching tides of history have a way of replacing romanticized notions with tighter restrictions and greater control. As such, it’s very rare to find an authentic wood fireplace in a drinking establishment these days. And fair enough: it doesn’t take much to think up half-a-dozen horrendous scenarios caused by the close proximity of flames to alcohol consumption. And yet, sipping by a fire sure does feel civilized. What’s a body to do? As it turns out, there remains at least one outpost for this sort of activity; at the back of the ’98, near the “Pointers” and “Setters” bathrooms, sits a large, majestic fireplace setback into a surrounding stone wall. To the left of the hearth lies a pile of hardy, well-stacked Yukon firewood. I don’t know what legal nuan-

ces allow for this situation to exist, but I am grateful they do. The ’98 is nothing if not an honest bar. Some establishments aim for an upscale-vibe, others aim for a relaxed atmosphere; but from the animal hides on the far wall to the rifles above the bartender, it would not occur to the ’98 to aim for anything other than exactly what it is. A few weeks ago, my friend Brendan Preston convened a meeting there; we discussed a film project he is spearheading. Appropriately, one theme this project touches on is the concept of “real Yukon” and what constitutes it. Four of us sat near the back of the bar on the raised platform. We brainstormed ideas as the woodfire illuminated our faces and nourished our imaginations. True, it’s not the Overland Trail, circa 1906; but it’s the closest thing left.

Overcoming Emotional Collapse Through Creation The Museum of Broken Relationships comes to Whitehorse by Meagan Deuling

O

linka Vistica and Drazen Grubisic broke up in 2003 in Zagreb, Croatia. Like most post-relationship humans, they had ordinary objects kicking around their houses that sparked emotions, relating to the relationship, or the demise of it. The two artists joked about starting a museum. They asked their friends for their relationship remnants. They got them. They displayed the ordinary objects in a shipping container in their Croatian city. It went over well. Now the exhibition travels the world, collecting sad bits as it goes: hence, the Museum of Broken Relationships. “It’s such a European thing to do,” says Anne Deck of the whole enterprise. Deck is an intern at the Yukon Art Centre Gallery — where the exhibition is coming on March 5. It’s the first time it will be on display in Canada. “It’s so creative, and off-thewall.” And, it’s interactive. Everywhere the museum travels, it calls for local submissions. Deck has been working to take in artifacts from Yukon relations-that-were. The last showing was in San Francisco. Deck recalls that there was one previous to that in Tokyo. “It will have a different resonance here. People might recognize the items, or the stories.” There has been a very positive response to the call for submissions in this northern territory. Deck tells of a vintage lamp with a big smile.

Did you want to keep it? “Yes, totally, we were just talking about that. It’s such a nice lamp.” She hasn’t read the story attached to the lamp, yet, but it’s a great lamp. Every submission can have a story — it can be vague, or specific, or poetic. Or there doesn’t need to be any words attached to the thing that will become an artifact in the Museum of Broken Relationships. “It’s really free form.” All the items will go on display — they’ve set up mannequins in the arts centre, because there will be clothes, but other than that, objects will go under Plexiglas. Like in a museum of natural history. Deck says the museum resonates across cultures and languages — everyone probably has something they’d want to donate. She called her sister to ask her to send a can of mace. “I dated a night club bouncer. He gave me a can of mace to carry around. I never used it. I never carried it around.” She kept it because she thought it was a thoughtful gesture. Deck gave it to her sister, because she studies late at the library and walks home. Her sister never used it, either. Now, the thoughtful gesture, representing a relationship that’s over, will be on display at the Yukon Arts Centre. It will become part of the permanent collection of goods that travel the world.

A can of love incense. Not all of the artifacts are exhibited in every place the museum goes. Deck says there are “star players” that are used to supplement the local showings. She knows there’s a moped, and a wedding dress that travel with the exhibition. Deck says it’s a unique opportunity for Yukoners to add their voices to the traveling exhibition. “This is a way to put objects in another place, on display. “It’s a commemoration to an ex-lover, wife, husband. “If you’re angry, it could be spiteful “It could be a way to let go. “If a partner died, it could have a different meaning.” The museum is a peephole into people’s private lives. It’s a look into dusty storage lockers. It’s an airing.

A letting-go. It’s different for each person. The Museum of Broken Relationships is calling for Yukon artifacts until February 19. If the delivery truck arrives on time, that means tomorrow, assuming you’re reading the paper the day it hits the stands. You can contribute. Go to www.brokenships.com to submit your very human artifact. Become art history. The display opens at the Yukon Arts Centre on March 5. Olinka Vistica, one of the original artists who broke up, will be there. The exhibit runs until May 23. Meagan Deuling is the assistant editor of What’s Up Yukon. From the Coach’s Chair A frontline perspective on organized sports by Catherine O’Donovan

I

have been involved in organized sports for 30 years; I haven’t been completely unorganized in my recreational play since the age of four. I have absolutely nothing against recreational free-play; in fact I would argue for its merits just as hard as I would for the merits of competitive sport. However, the only point really worth arguing for is that everyone should be active. I do not think organized and competitive sports are for everyone, but from my experience, those who participate in such activities benefit from them. I am writing from a personal perspective, and although I have read many articles and studies on the benefits of sports, my perspective in this article is based on years of observation — first as an athlete, followed by 20 years of coaching, and years as a parent of two active daughters. As a competitive gymnast, my club and teammates were my second home and family. The gym was my palace of confidence. After 30 years in my club, the walls fill me with an air of capability and physical strength. These attributes were a gift from my sport,

and have carried me through many aspects of my life. For many, the teen years are rough on self-esteem; outside of my sanctuary I suffered from the clichéd issues of teen life — I struggled to belong, to be appreciated and valued, and to feel powerful. But I was fortunate to have a refuge that gave me a few hours each day where I belonged; I was a more self–assured version of myself. The gym taught me willpower, how to keep moving, and how to push my fears and my physical limits. Every time I pushed a limit, I developed a small slice of pride that would later nourish and fight off a teenage image crisis. The challenges of competitive sport also transferred into my academic and professional life. They taught me the value of hard work, learning from others, working with a team, and the undeniable strength of willpower. This is why I never left my sport; thirty years later I am still there. After retiring from competition at 14, I coached through high school, then I coached to support my university education as a so-

I Have to Push On Even if I’m sore I’ll still push on. When I feel poor I always push on. When I’m lonely I just push on. If I get sick I slowly push on. When I want to give up Somehow I push on. When I have no hope I seem to push on. Even if I’m sad

I have to push on. When I suffer grief I gotta push on. When things go wrong I just push on. Sometimes I’m hurt you know I have to push on. Even if there’s death I know I have to push on. When Didoo was gone God told me to push on.

Catherine O’Donovan crouches beside her athletes, imparting knowledge and encouragement cial worker, and even after I had a social work career, I coached in the evenings. Now I coach full time. I coach because I want to help others; I want to work with kids and empower them. I help kids build confidence every time I teach them a new skill — I show them how to trust themselves and the strength of their body. I have worked with some people from the time they are eighteen months old, until they are young adults who have trained competitively under me. This gives me a front-row seat in which to watch them grow from young, shy kids with talent, to amazing, capable, and strong young people. Some are my employees while they’re in high school; some stay and continue coaching; most go off to university. My favourite part is when one of them returns to the club on school breaks or once they have graduated and moved back home. I am honoured by the support they offer teammates that they may never have trained with, by coming out to the competitions in the cities in which they live, they never stop being on the team. If I ever need to be reassured that my coaching was significant to them, I just wait until I receive one of the almost monthly requests for reference letters. And who better to reference your character and work ethic then a coach who pushed you, supported you, and watched you grow and excel? Why organized sport? Because when a person is encouraged to be the greatest version of themselves, they gain respect for others, and most importantly, for themselves. RRSP Strategies

A Klondike Korner

for Your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s & 60s

with Dan Davidson

The Cold Weather Doggie Blues

Financial strategies change as you advance through life. With only a minority of Canadians in the workforce covered by an employer pension plan (about 40%, according to Statistics Canada), many of us will have to look after ourselves in our retirement years. The Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and its close cousin, the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), will likely be the most important tools available to support our financial needs in retirement. Here are some key strategies to keep in mind at various stages in your life:

Your 20s & 30s If you walk away with just one pearl of wisdom at this early stage in your life and career, it is this — absolutely do not waste your single biggest asset: time. While spare cash at this age may seem modest and there will be plenty of competing interests for your money, you have time on your side to allow even the smallest savings to become significant 30 or 40 years down the road. As those who wait until later years to save will tell you, delays in saving have a dramatic effect on your final balance going into retirement. This is where an RRSP becomes a young person’s best friend. Unlike a traditional bank savings account, an RRSP allows you to make tax-deductible contributions for retirement to grow quietly at a steady pace. Since the money is only taxed if withdrawn before retirement, there is less temptation to spend your savings. Consider the following: • Divert a manageable amount of money from your paycheque to your RRSP and/or TFSA monthly (even a minor amount is better than nothing) • Take full advantage of any matching employer contributions to your RRSP • Try hard to develop good savings habits and don’t just save for retirement — you may need other savings for an emergency or as a down payment on a home

Shadow in her cold weather gear

A

t 40 below, Fahrenheit and Celsius are the same; not that our dog, Shadow, cares about that. She may need to go outside to relieve herself, but her preference is to cross her legs, huddle in the back of her kennel in the kitchen and wait for warmer weather. We kennel her at night so that if the inclination strikes her to wander off in search of a bit of carpet to be annoying on, she can’t. One thing we learned early is that she will not soil her kennel. She’s seldom desperate to leave it in the morning, so it’s not as if this routine is creating any kind of a hardship for her. Shadow descended from a blend of sled dog (mother) and border collie (father), but she’s always been an indoor dog when it comes to winter. While the word “walk” (one of many she responds to), will send her into leaping paroxysms of ecstasy during moderate weather, the current cold snap

has seriously diminished her interest in anything beyond the front porch and the back stairs. In really cold weather we bundle her up with booties (getting them on her hind paws is the hardest part of the operation) and a sort of weather cape that a talented friend of ours made for her. The whole outfit looks a little bit weird, but it does the job. Still, the border collie in her can lead her to mischief born of boredom if she doesn’t burn off some energy, so in really cold weather we get her to run around outside the house from the back door to the front, making it a bit of a game. She’s usually good for about five circumnavigations of the perimeter before she makes it clear she’s had enough. Tonight, however, she decided to make a liar out of me and reluctantly managed only two rotations. On the second, she sat on the back steps for quite a while giving the door the famous “bor-

der collie stare” that she uses on people in order to tell them they need to figure out what she wants them to do. I had to whistle from the front door four times before she finally conceded I wasn’t going to let her back in the way she went out. When she did trot up the front steps and poke her nose in at the open door, she gave me a disdainful glance and looked over her shoulder at me all the way to her kennel, where she kept herself out of the way until I gave her a good ear rub. I really couldn’t blame her; I didn’t like it out there either. After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

Finally, now is the time to start developing a relationship with a trusted financial advisor. Don’t worry that you don’t have major investable assets yet. A good advisor will appreciate your earnest desire to save for the future, and will provide a financial strategy to help you achieve both your short-term and longterm goals.

Your 40s By now, there will be many different interests competing for your money. From children to home ownership to vacations and hobbies, money will likely appear to be going out as soon as it is coming in. It’s also at this stage when most people who haven’t begun saving will realize the error of their ways. Don’t worry, it’s not too late. To get on track and begin surging forward, this is an even more critical time to have a relationship with a good financial advisor to help identify your current expenses and income available for a flexible savings plan. You should begin thinking of longer-term goals and objectives, such as envisioning your retirement objectives and choosing a path to get there. If you already have savings in place, this is the time to determine whether your money is working hard enough for you. Your 50s For many, these are the years when income potential is peaking and that means having a very clear picture of what you are spending year-to-year, and whether you are on a path to live the lifestyle you desire in retirement. Your financial advisor can help you determine whether you are contributing enough to your RRSP and TFSA to meet future goals. Again, you may also want to re-examine and lower your exposure to market risk in your investment portfolio, including your retirement savings plans.

Your 60s Whether you are ready to retire or just considering another chapter in your life, this is when you will begin taking a hard look at your income needs year-to-year and your outside sources of funds, such as government retirement benefits, rental properties and savings. It is also an important time for both you and your spouse or partner to talk about how you want to spend future years. Some couples are surprised to learn of each other’s different expectations for living standards in retirement. From a financial perspective, you need to know how much you have to rely on savings and investments, and whether you are on track. The reality is that your portfolio must not only provide for your current income needs, but also must be able to sustain your needs throughout your retired years, which can be 25 years from now. Yukon Wildlife Preserve

Making a difference one animal at a time Wolf’s Den

T

he Yukon Wildlife Preserve has been helping injured, orphaned, and sick animals for over ten years. Located 25 minutes from downtown Whitehorse on the Hot Springs Road, It is a very important place in Whitehorse because if animals need a home they can take refuge there and be safe. Staff at the preserve’s rehabilitation centre are always busy helping animals that need care. “A typical day at the centre includes checking on the animals that are both inside and outside, feeding them and making sure they have their medicine,” said Dr. Maria Hallock, veterinarian and animal curator at the rehab centre. Hallock works hard to treat every injured animal or bird that is brought to the rehab centre. She often gets asked, “Why does the Preserve help ravens and squirrels as they are so common?” “Life is life. You need to respect every life no matter how common or how rare that life is,” she replies. Approximately 45 to 50 animals are received each year, and the preserve is able to release 75 per cent of them. Some of these successes include a great grey owl that was recently released back into the wild after being helped by rehab staff. In 2013, two young eagles received surgery at the rehab centre after being injured in a storm. They were released shortly after. Veterinarian Dr. Michelle Oakley performed surgery on one of the eagle’s fractured legs alongside Dr. Hallock. “It was the first surgery I had done on an eagle and his leg healed so well that in a few weeks, we couldn’t tell which leg had been injured,” said Oakley. “It was so rewarding to see both eagles heal so well. Of course, the best feeling was when we released them and they could fly again.” You can see the release of owls, eagles, and other birds on Dr. Oakley’s Yukon Vet television show on National Geographic’s Nat Geo Wild. The preserve is featured in many of the shows. Dr. Oakley enjoys helping animals, big and small. Examples of small animals that she helps are lynx babies; she gives them vaccines. An example of a big animal that she helps is a muskox. She’ll dart it, and then trim its nails and

Joe preaches respect for the pig’s head he’s carving into and waxes poetic about squid, Duncan relishes the last few bloody bites of a special meal, and Joe and Ella never seem to eat at all. in American situation comedy. The dinnertime ritual of the physicist boys in The Big Bang Theory often includes an interrogation by the adorably rigid Sheldon about the specs of the meal his roommate Leonard brings home; the routine is comfort food in itself. “I’ll have what she’s having”, from When Harry Met Sally, has become a quote almost as recognizable as Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First?” routine. So when Shakespeare’s Macbeth and his wife are imagined by writer Peter Moffat as a powercouple behind a trendy restaurant in a Shakespeare Retold version of Macbeth, available on DVD at Whitehorse Public Library, certain expectations are raised from years of exposure to meals on reels. At the very least, you’re bound to

The ambitious chef turns to murder, and the madness and mayhem of Shakespeare’s tragic tale follow. But he still has to cook, right? Partway through Shakespeare Retold: Macbeth, I was still waiting for the gleaming chrome surfaces of the kitchen to yield some beautifully presented plates of trendy cuisine, circa 2005, the year the series was screened. To my horror, it finally dawned on me that this Michelin man only deals in the visceral side of the culinary repertoire. It never gets more appetizing than the first scene, where the bin men chow down on sandwiches made with ingredients scavenged from the landfill. The fixings are described in detail but

Joe’s crimes aren’t shown, but as the body count rises, he and Ella’s hallucinations turn handwashing and meal preparation into graphic displays of gore. By the time pigs have flown and marked the end of Joe’s gastronomic reign, it’s a relief to be spared more samples from his menu. Watch this version of Macbeth for its imagination and satire and because Shakespeare doesn’t let you down. Just don’t bring your appetite. Sprouted Buckwheat “Aioli”

Edible Yukon with Kim Melton

While the buckwheat is certainly non-traditional, this spread or dip has the garlic and oil that give Aioli (think ail + oli) its name. To sprout the buckwheat, place it in a mason jar and secure a piece of onion bag or cheesecloth with the ring from the lid. Cover with water to an inch above the grain and leave to soak overnight. Drain and rinse a few times (no need to remove the top – just pour water through, shake around, and drain) until the water is no longer thick, and leave the jar in a warm place upside down in a bowl for a two-three days, rinsing twice a day.

The Green Rush

Feeling revitalized by sprouts in midwinter

R

ight on schedule, my sprout craving has arisen from where it has lain quietly dormant since the fall, nestled snug beneath the desire for stews and roasted root vegetables. The herbs I’ve kept in the house are responding to the same cues, with tiny pale green leaves emerging from the nodes of their twiggy stems. I’m betting it’s the light, though the Chinooklike breeze that wafted through after our little taste of -40°C might have something to do with it. I have reports from Teslin that pussy willows sprang out. Back to edible sprouts. At first I noticed the jar of bright green mung beans in the shed, and I remembered that I never did refill my container in the house. So I brought some in. Then, I remembered the bag of organic fenugreek seed I bought last winter. I set some of those to soak. And from there it spiraled out of control as I inspected my bottles and jars of dried goods with a new eye, wondering which could be brought out of their long sleep and coaxed to unfurl a shoot and a root. So far I have added peas from Joan and Al Norberg at Grizzly Valley Farms, mustard from my own garden, and lentils from I’mnot-quite-sure-where. And then of course there are the grains. Buckwheat is one of my favourites to sprout. It is perhaps best known in its ground form as the French sarrasin, the prime ingredient in the galette, a thin crepe from Normandy. Cooked up like rice, it is rather bland, though roasting it first can bring out a bit of nuttiness. Sprout it, though, and it’s a whole new ball of wax. It can be used raw, in salads, once the tiny white tendrils begin to show green, or ground up into a kind of raw porridge for breakfast, and topped with nuts and fruit, or spiced to make a savory dip or

Fenugreek is one of my favorite seeds to sprout. spread. The truly ambitious can sprout any whole grain and then dry it again, before grinding it up for the most nutritious flour you’ll find anywhere. So what’s the big deal about sprouting, besides indulging my craving for fresh and green things? As with most extreme statements, the ones that tout sprouts as the solution to the world’s problems are overblown. However, sprouting is a great way of increasing the vitamin content of nuts, grains, and legumes. In addition, enzyme inhibitors that keeps the seeds’ energy stores stable while dormant are inactivated during germination, rendering those same stores more accessible to us. Another compound in seeds that is neutralized by soaking (the first step in sprouting) is phytic acid, which binds minerals and inhibits their absorption by our gut. Any gardener will tell you that seeds lose viability over time, so the jar of lentils that’s been in the cupboard for six years might not sprout as well. That said,

The Fiddle

Remembers CD funds Alzheimer’s Society of Canada by Darrell Hookey

Maureen Routledge and Keitha Clark

H

arold Routledge did not remember that he had built this fiddle with his own hands; but the tunes, and the skill to play it, were memories that had not yet been robbed by Alzheimer’s. “There is something about music that it is so deeply ingrained to memories from a long time ago,” says Keitha Clark, who was there to witness the moment. “It is one of the last things to go.” She had come to Copper Ridge Place in the winter of 2012 to play for Routledge. His wife, Maureen, who was residing at Macaulay Lodge at the time, had loaned Clark one of his fiddles to play for her husband. “Harold’s fiddle just came alive,” says Clark of her own performance. “I’m not big into all of that, but Harold’s fiddle just came alive and it kind of had a special sound. “And when I took the fiddle back to Macaulay Lodge, the wood kind of came alive, too, and it knew it was being played for Maureen.

“Harold’s spirit was in there, somehow, and the timber of the instrument changed.” After Harold died the next fall, Clark put a call out to the Yukon’s strong fiddling community to record a live performance of his music. “It spurred me into action to preserve his memory and celebrate his fiddle making and to pass it on when he couldn’t do it anymore,” says Clark. “It’s a living tradition.” Funding would be key, so she first approached Ken Mason, the Mic Mac Toyota dealer, who had played for the residents of Macaulay Lodge for many years. His company contributed half of the cost of engineering, mixing, and duplication. Then she talked to Steve Slade, who arranged for the finale of Arts In The Park to be a fundraiser for the project. Grant Simpson and Rob Bergman, both musicians who have played at Macaulay Lodge for many years, donated their talents. Clark picked out Routledge’s

favourite fiddle tunes, including two he had written himself, and the set was recorded in one night at the usual Thursday gig at Macaulay Lodge. “The recording took place right beside the cafeteria so sometimes you’d be hearing the utensils being put away,” says Clark today.

PHOTO: Rick Massie “And it is the way we wanted it … we wanted a live recording and to catch the spirit of what we were trying to do.” The recording picks up the applause and possibly some shuffling of feet as residents dance a twostep to the music. One of Clark’s music students,

Keitha Clark plays a fiddle that was one of eight made by Harold Routledge. The back of it is made of spruce from Atlin, where he and his wife, Maureen, ran an aviation repair business. Local musicians are honouring his memory, while raising money for Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, with a live recording, Memories For Harold.

Abby Cruikshank, accompanies a vintage recording of Routledge by adding the harmony to his melody. The song is “Black and White Pussy Cat”. Only 100 CDs have been made and they will be sold for $10 at the Rendezvous Fiddle Shows. Why so few? “When they are gone, they are gone,” says Clark. “That’s what makes it special.” She explains that a live performance is special for the exact same reason. All of the proceeds from the sales of Memories For Harold will go to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada. There is a fiddle show on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and another at 7 p.m. Both are at the Yukon Arts Centre. Tickets are available at Arts Underground, the Yukon Arts Centre Box Office and www.yukontickets.com. Darrell Hookey is a freelance writer and editor in Whitehorse.

Sound technician Jim Holland in his new studio Over the next few months Holland will be teaching full day courses from a series called Capturing Sound. Courses will take place at Holland’s studio, Green Needle Records. Sure, we all hear music on the radio and see bands play live, but what is it we are actually listening to? Sound in the form of music evokes emotions, makes us think, inspires minds, and in some cases, heals the soul. But there is also a strong technical element; without it, the music that speaks to many of us would be mute. “The sound is of paramount importance in any presentation,” says Holland. “On the music end, performers spend years honing their craft, getting their voices and instruments to sound as good as they can, playing their best or most flattering songs, all so they can make a connection with the audi-

mic, who will hear her? Holland’s courses aim to provide direction in the technical aspects of sound. Capturing Sound will teach people about using microphones and mixing boards to squeeze out the finite details needed to ensure great live sound. “Those who attend will learn not only about the gear, but also best practices for reinforcing or recording sound, and the reasons why they are the best practices,” says Holland. Production coordinators do not always allocate a proper budget towards the sound component of a show, says Holland. “When this happens they end up distracting from the positive impact of the event that they worked so hard to put together, it hurts the audience, the acts, and the events’ reputation, if applicable.” This is one of the reasons Holland decided to teach these cours-

my plan to host some educationrelated events there. This was an obvious choice for a course,” he says. Once Holland has finished his series, Capturing Sound, he plans to start another series of courses in the spring called Makin’ Music. “The courses will be geared toward amateur musicians who want to get the skills and confidence to play with other musicians.” For more information about courses visit www.greenneedlerecords.com

Alex was very proud that I brought rice, which disappeared quickly. I showed him my pictures of the past exchange, and didn’t even tell Alex our former guest’s name. Since there’s 250 million people in Indonesia, I thought there was no way could he know him. But to my surprise he did; Al Busyra is still involved in the exchange program. Paul arrived during our Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Paul and Alex enjoyed getting to know each other. I noticed how Canadian I am, or North American, when sharing our home and traditions. I am First Nations from the Yukon: the first peoples of the land. I tried to share much of my culture with my boys and group. I told traditional stories at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre. I also took Alex to a potlatch in Carcross — a Tlingit ceremony with a feast. We got to learn from each other, share our foods with one another, and have fun together. All four of us had various schedules, so we didn’t have much time together as a whole family. The guys had intensive schedules with very little free time. Alex volunteered at Selkirk Elementary School. Paul volunteered at The Yukon Wildlife Preserve, the Salvation Army, and the Thomson Centre. Other youth volunteered at the Food Bank, the Salvation

Army, Yukon College, Northern Cultural Expressions, the Boys & Girls Club, Blood Ties, Raven Recycling, the Duska Family Centre, Elijah Smith Elementary School, the Canada Games Centre, the Potluck Food Co-up, the Women’s Centre, the Second Opinion Society, and Women in Trade & Technology. Hundreds of volunteer hours were given to Whitehorse. Our church, Whitehorse United Church, hosted a multi-faith event. We shared food and our faith. It was good to hear about Muslim, Bah’ai, First Nations, and Christian faiths. I learned about the hijab, and I even learned how to wrap a beautiful scarf, in the Muslim style. All too soon, their final culture show was presented. I was so nervous and excited for the group. I felt like a pageant mom, and a lot called me Momma Sharon. Everything was great — from fashion show, the salmon dance, and songs and dances. Everyone did well and made all the host families proud. Since they have left, I have

he city bus stops right in front of our home in the Whitehorse. I still watch every day for “my boys” to get off and come home, even though they’ve been gone for weeks. I was privileged to be a host mom for the Canada World Youth program from October 2014 to January 2015. We had two counterparts assigned to us: Alex from Jakarta, Indonesia, and Paul from Winnipeg. My boys. I agreed to be a host family after hearing the Canadian supervisor, Alison Steward, on a local radio station. Long ago, in 1986, my family hosted for the Canada World Youth Indonesia Exchange in British Columbia. We had the Indonesian program supervisor, Al Busyra Basnur, stay with us. It was a great and positive experience, and with that, my husband and I decided to host for the first month in Whitehorse. I didn’t know what to expect. I really didn’t know how the 10 Indonesians would be able to cope with a Yukon winter. Also, I thought most of the southern Canadians likely wouldn’t have been to the North. We discussed getting them winter gear and Internet usage. At the welcome potluck, I met 18 vibrant and excited young people. It was overwhelming to meet such a big group at once. We were delighted to hear Indonesian songs. I brought rice and my husband wondered if it was good to bring. I recalled that it was from when my family had our Indonesian guest with us; he went through

iving in the suburbs, having children and a husband, driving a minivan: for some this may sound boring, but it is Cea Sunrise Person’s dream come true. Person’s memoir, North of Normal (published at HarperCollins) describes her childhood with her hippie-family in the wilderness. When she was only a few months old, she came up North with her grandparents and her 16-year-old mother. The family set up a tipi camp in northern Alberta, to live hand-to-mouth in the wild. Her charismatic grandfather was the leader of their camp. He invited friends, smoked pot, took LSD, and was naked all day. As a child, Person witnessed the parties and sometimes she would sleep in the same tipi where her mother was having sex. “I always had a sense of normal. I somehow knew that the life I was living was far from that,” Person says. Kids from the city brought toys into the camp that Person hadn’t seen before. When a girl showed her a Barbie, the doll became a symbol of normal for Person. “The dream of becoming a model started with the Barbie,” Person says. “One day my mother took me to a store in Calgary and I saw models. I knew I wanted to be one of them.” After spending a few years with her mother and a boyfriend of hers on the road, Person and her mother returned to the wilderness camp. Person’s grandparents had now moved to the Yukon, to set up their tipi outside of Carcross. Soon after their arrival, Person’s mother realized she didn’t want to stay in the wilderness and moved to Calgary, leaving Person with her grandparents for a year. When her mother had settled, Person moved to Calgary. She had a difficult time at first, feeling like an outsider, but soon she buried the “naïve bush-girl”, as she writes in her book. At 13, she participated in a model contest, lied about her age and was discovered by a scout. Soon she took off for New York and Paris and became an international model. “For me it was not a big deal to

survive in a big city all by myself,” Person says. “I always survived on my own; I never had someone to look after me.” The skills she had learned in the wilderness helped her.

her three children and her husband. She is working on her second book, which will expand on her healing process. Her current book is a wild ride through her childhood, sometimes

“I could adapt pretty quickly. I have good common sense,” Person says. As a model she stayed away from drugs and alcohol at first. But when her marriage fell apart, Person had a breakdown, and started drinking. One night on coke she beat up her husband. When she woke up the next morning she called her mother, realizing she needed help. Then the healing started. “(It) took about a decade of acceptance, therapy, and writing the book also helped me. It took six years to write my memoir, because I had to learn about how to write.” Now Person is living “the most normal life”, as she puts it, with

scary, sometimes hilarious. What is the message of her book? “Dreams can come true,” Person says. “Anybody has given opportunities in life regardless in what family you are born. I believe that no matter what your dream is, and no matter in what circumstances you are in you can make any of your dreams come true. But it takes lot of work.” The book is available at Mac´s Fireweed Books for $ 22.99. Elke Reinauer is a German writer based in Whitehorse. y phone rang at 2:27 pm. Janessa was on the other end: “What’s going on dad?” “What are you talking about?” I said. It turns out the technology I use to reassure my family that I am okay works very well to inform them when I am not. As it should. She told me that someone from DeLorme — a company that makes two way communication devices — called and said we sent an SOS. I could hear the panic in her voice, but told her we were okay, and that I had to call her back. I hadn’t updated the numbers on my contact info; the cell number I had was disconnected, so they called the next one on the list. We immediately got off the phone and called 911. The dispatcher knew exactly who I was, and where I was, due to the coordinates sent from my InReach. He asked if everything was okay, and confirmed my location. But then he corrected himself, saying, “Actually I know where you are, are you sure everything at Cantlie Lake is okay”? He patched me through to the member of the RCMP who was working to dispatch a helicopter to check on us because we hadn’t answered the messages DeLorme was sending to the InReach device. After a brief conversation

SOS, in order to avoid a situation like this. If the helicopter did come for us it would have been the most expensive trip to Cantlie Lake ever. I would like to extend my thanks to the RCMP member; I didn’t get his name. I’d also like to thank Emily from DeLorme, and the 911 crew for their care and concern. In the future I will feel a lot better traveling with the knowledge that they have my back in the actual event of an emergency.

he understood that it was an accident and we were okay. Emily, from DeLorme, called the girls to let them know that all was well; they were rather shaken up. I tried to reassure them that I am a very proficient outdoorsman. “That is why we were so scared, you wouldn’t hit the button unless something very bad happened,” Hayley told me. We’ve used devices like these for years, and throughout most of the

territory — to say good night to the girls, tell them how we were doing, and even calling in help from Chris, to pick up my boat when the truck broke down. Technology can be an amazing thing, but if it’s misused, like it was this time, it can bring worry to our families. When you use the various spot and Delorme devices make sure you know how they work, and on the Delorme, make sure the lock is secured on the

do you have a tire pressure monitoring system equipped on your vehicle?

If you notice a light on your dash that includes the letters T.P.M.S. or a small tire icon, your vehicle may be equipped with this safety system. As of September 2007 the D.O.T. requires every passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured for sale in the U.S. with a G.V.W.R. of 10,000 lbs or less must include a system to detect any tire with less than 25% of the placard pressure and warn the driver of a low tire pressure on the instrument panel. There are several different meanings to these indicators and deciphering which condition the system is indicating varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you notice any of these warnings on your instrument panel, you should refer to your owner’s manual or stop in and have us identify which conditions the vehicle may be experiencing.

Fun Fair Tips

by Nash and Thayer

by Darrell Hookey

W

hat are those? “Whiffle balls.” What are they for? “Tic-Tac-Toe.” Five-year-old Nash Battersby is about to school me in the art of winning prizes at the Fun Fair at Whitehorse Elementary School, this Friday and Saturday. The whiffle balls are thrown into the nine-hole grid and, well, everyone knows what needs to be done. Nash is fast. Wickedly fast. But there must have been a crosswind in the Sport Yukon hallway, because he failed to get three in a row. “You have to aim it and throw it down low,” he says during his post-game interview, demonstrating an underhand motion. Then, he tries it again. Three for three; He got the middle, horizontal row. “You won the big prize,” says his mother, Cali Battersby. “Do you know what it is?” Then she kisses him on the cheek. He accepts it gladly. Cali explains that she played this game, herself, as a youngster. Then, when she was a youth soccer player, she helped run the games. Now, she is the Yukon Soccer Association’s sports administrator and she is helping organize the annual fundraiser to support the Strikers’ traveling teams. “All the sides of it are pretty neat to see, just how much work goes into it for the two days.” Cali says planning started in December, to decide roles, and then organizing went into full swing three weeks before the event. But she, and the other organizers, draw on their own soccer skills: “The teamwork,” she says. “There is a lot of getting people to work together and making sure they have the information they need.

“And lots of heavy lifting.” Nash’s big brother, eight-yearold Thayer, demonstrates the Ring Toss. If you get a ring over the bottle and the block of wood it is standing on, you win a pop. He gets better and better as he goes. “You throw underhand,” he says. “And you should try to stand in the middle so that you can aim for all of them. “If one is just hanging on the block, you can knock it with another.” But that is enough demonstrating for this day. He has to be 100 per cent for his hockey game later. Cali says the admission is one dollar and then the tickets to play the games are 25 cents each. There are lots of prizes: “We have little cars, there’s stickers, there’s temporary tattoos, there’s bouncy balls ... you name it, we have it,” says Cali. “The Cake Walk, too,” her husband, Bryn Battersby, reminds her. “The Cake Walk?” she replies. “Yeah, you win a whole cake. “Our U-12 girls usually volunteer to run the Cake Walk and they bake the cakes. “It’s just like musical chairs. You walk around the chairs to the music and you sit in a chair and if they pull the number of your chair, you win a cake. “You just have to be good at walking and sitting … and you don’t even have to be good at that, either,” she adds. Then there is the Fish Pond and Darts. Pointy darts? “Oh yeah,” says Cali. “You have to pop those balloons. “And we have air rifles that shoot corks,” she adds. “That’s always a favourite.” Acknowledging potential con-

cerns, she says, “It is all very controlled and it is all very well maintained. “We have a lot of hunters here, so people are a little less paranoid about it and the kids seem to know what they are doing.”

There are 15 activities in total. And there is the Bingo game that runs both days in the other part of the gymnasium. It’s a good thing there is a concession downstairs. “If you are looking for a place not to get a headache, that is the place to be,” says Cali. “The Under 16 girls team is

running the concession. They are going to the Nationals and the Westerns this year. “They’ll have chips and pop and hot dogs and the usual junk food you would get at a Fun Fair.” The Yukon Soccer Association has been running the Fun Fair for almost 20 years as an affiliate with the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. It will be open noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb 13 and Saturday, Feb 14 at Whitehorse Elementary School. Meanwhile, outside at Shipyards Park, Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous has its own children’s events, called Kidsfest!. All of these activities and shows are free for those 15 years of age and younger. Starting on Friday, at 11 a.m.,

and ending at 3 p.m., there will be the Slide ‘N Glide and Dog Sled Workshops and Rides. Then, on Saturday, the Dog Sled Workshop and Rides continue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. while the 2685 “The Yukon Regiment” Family Wilderness Survival Contest starts at 11 a.m. There will be other activities in the park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Kids’ Activities continue Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a Pie Eating Contest at 1 p.m. At 1:30 p.m., there will be the Ping Pong Ball Drop. And the grand finale will be family entertainer Fred Penner with two free shows in the Main Tent. His first show is at 10 a.m. and the second is at noon.

How to Sam

February 19, 2015

A champion shares his secrets

by Eric Walker

E

arly in 2008 my mother saw me on the cover of the Whitehorse Star wearing nothing but a straw skirt and a bottle of our local beer. That is how she found out I was running for Sourdough Sam. I don’t think she was shocked to see me in women’s wear, though — she knew it was just a matter of time. It was the Monday after the 2008 Sourdough Sam search event: Happy New Years, mom. I was appropriately unprepared for our first meeting. I needed a sponsor, a Sam name, an alterego, costumes, props, and time off of work. Luckily I was fully employed by Raven Recycling at the time; they helped me with five of six above criteria. My name was Misbehavin’ Raven, I was sponsored by Raven Recycling, and had full access to the free store, and whatever happened to blow into our company yard. The only thing they didn’t give me was time off work. Details of what happened aren’t 100 per cent clear to me now, due to circumstances that were completely within my control. My memory usually doesn’t stretch past my last great meal, but I’ll give re-telling my Sourdough Sam story a good shot. Theme Music is important for Sam-ing; it sets the tone. The choice was obvious. I grew up in the ‘80s; my idols were intense, bizarre, and prolific — none more so than Hulk Hogan. If you ever hear the Hulkster’s theme music “Real American”, and the hairs on the back of your neck don’t stand at full attention,

then someone involved in your life owes you an apology. No matter how I felt before getting my hide onto that stage, once those first three bars hit the amplifier, I was more than ready. Sam-hopefuls were told the pageant wasn’t some balls-out, gauntlet-rocking, booze-fest where the drunkest man gets the most votes, and that nudity equals victory. Stewed-up, slobbery naked men are funny, of course. But only from a far distance, like on COPS or the Internet. The contest is to be Yukon’s primo male, and Yukon’s primo male can handle his drink. Right? Day one was Lip Sync Sam. What else could I do but Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”? I can sing that song in my sleep. I probably have sung it in my sleep. It was a great warm up and I got to know my Sam brothers. The great thing about Sourdough Sams is that without saying anything, we established early that we weren’t in competition with each other. We were in it together, if one Sam was hesitant or faltering in any way, we were there for him. Even after a poutine platter, a carafe of bottom shelf red wine, and a fireball kick I was still a ball of nerves up there. But once “Real American” hit the speakers, and the brothers helped me up, I was a Sourdough Sam. The minutiae is foggy, but I am sure we all did great. I wore a skin-tight, yet thick black, unitard with orange stockings and black wings as my official

Sam get-up, that I’m sure of. One kind gentleman who was really in the Rendezvous spirit paid for my next half litre of wine after the show, and we were off. Here is where the sequence of events jarbles, so I’ll just throw in a few anecdotes from my Misbehavin’ Raven alter-reality. Bare’n’Boot; I learned a few important lessons here. First, four minutes is a very long time when you are tasked with stripping and dancing in front of a bar full of eager individuals looking for some saucy entertainment. Especially when you have about 45 seconds of material. Choose your song wisely —short, loud, and funny. I had a poor recording of Bloodhound Gang’s “The Bad Touch” to go on. When my 45 seconds of tragedy were up, I had to pretend I could not only dance, but liked to dance in front of strangers in ass-less daisydukes, with double-sided tape all over my chest and a stomach full of wine and poutine. Second, wine and poutine is not a dietary regimen, period. Third, using double-sided taped to stick balloons to your chest is a fun idea, until the balloons are popped and your bored audience decides to remove the tape for you. Fourth, covering yourself in balloons and handing out toothpicks to an audience is the best way to get stabbed while dancing with a chair that I can think of. But this is just another life lesson I am sure we all have had. Queen of the Creeks; I really enjoyed this.

I had no idea that I had always wanted to wear a dress until I put on a dress. I found a beautiful red spaghetti strap at the consignment store, and it was just gorgeous. It fit me beautifully, showed off curves I didn’t know existed, and gave my lumbering walk a real sway. When I walked out on the 202 stage that night, I killed it. I wanted to wear that dress and the crowd knew it. Men and women bought me drinks. A lot of us crossed a few barriers, flirted with weird, and really captured the Rendezvous Spirit. My swimsuit was a cute little silver thing my friend Gaby lent me, with a Johnny Cash wig stuffed in the front waist... area... which we all appreciated. I wish I still had that body. Time gets us all. I missed out on Karaoke night, unfortunately. By this event I had been going to work at 6:00 am everyday, staying out until past midnight, and a flu had made its way into our ranks. Coupled with my dietary regimen of poutine, wine, and fireball, I was in no shape. Talent Show. I had zero plan going in, and I had less of a plan when I got there. I think I wound up dressing as a pregnant Britney Spears and dancing along to “Hit Me Baby One More Time”, which turned into me inviting the audience onto the floor for a five-minute dance party. Was this an attempt at topical humour? I’m not at all sure; poutine has a way of making a man do funny things for drink tickets. Dance Off. Again, I had zero plan (many Sam veterans maintain the “noplan” method is very much in

spirit with the pageant). I have no dance moves other than the air guitar, although I advise those who think they cannot dance to plant both heels, move your feet and write your name with your butt in the air. It was very adequate showing. Stephen McGovern, however, had the best moves I’ve seen. He won that event hands down, and it was a pleasure for all of us to see. Duct Tape Challenge; our last event. By this point the flu was going to work on us. None of us felt it, but I found out later we showed it. I draped myself in duct tape, and invited a few friends on stage. We flew into a duct tape air-band version of “Paranoid”, by Black Sabbath. It was a lively way to finish a very beautiful week. I won the Sourdough Sams as Eric Southwick-Walker and I was finished. After my congratulatory trophy shot of fireball, tequila, water, beer, and wine I was in bed by 11:00 p.m. Entering and winning the Sams is still one of the most profound events of my life. It was a release, and I understood it was a release for the crowd, too. Sure I wore a tight red dress, but those folks who flirted with me were playing the same game I was. When I danced like I never had before, the throng was with me, cheering on what was clearly a terrible excuse for dancing. We’re told, “Once a Sam, always a Sam”, and it’s the truth. We were in it together. Eric Walker is the real deal. Contact him via editor@ whatsupyukon.com
