Looking For A Way To “Get Out Of Dodge”

uring my days at Vanier Catholic Secondary School I played football during the lunch hour. After scarfing down some sustenance we would head to the soccer field, divide the available players, and fling ourselves around “the gridiron” for half-an-hour before returning inside for afternoon classes.

In the spring the floodgates would open and an assortment of jocks, stoners, metal heads, nonvirgins, confused exchange students and girls would join us on the battlefield; but in the middle of winter there was typically only myself, Adam Scheck, Barrett Mataseje (yes, that Barrett Mataseje), Jesse Koeller, John Walsh, PhD, Chris Fozard and Jeff Faulkner.

In Grade 10 there was a football game every day, no matter what the temperature. I remember times when my hands would get so numb that I couldn’t properly hold a pencil for most of the afternoon (making my chicken scratch notes even more disorganized and illegible than usual).

Because our midwinter matches were often just three-on-three, we adapted the rules of Vanier football to suit our particular needs. In our game: •The quarterback couldn’t run unless he was rushed. If the defense didn’t send someone hunting for a sack the QB had to throw the ball.

•A receiver could only gain 10 yards after a reception. That way if a player evaded the initial tackle, he couldn’t run unchallenged into the end zone. And my favourite, •Offensive pass interference was not only legal, it was a strategic necessity. If you were on of-

Grade 10 fence, a typical first down would involve running about five yards downfield, locating the player who was guarding your teammate and then trying to knock said player ass-over-tea-kettle. A savvy defender would see this coming, brace for the impact and then yell “SWITCH,” at which point he and his partner would trade coverage responsibilities.

I hated high school.

Hated it.

I was reasonably well liked, had a solid group of friends and even had some good teachers — Rick Griffiths introduced me to Albert Camus in English 12 — but the institution was obviously designed for people with less imagination than me.

I nearly failed French 11 and scraped by with marks barely good enough to get into university — where I thankfully fared much better.

But every lunch hour I got to head out to the back forty and play a sport that I had a central role in inventing.

My advice to high school students like myself — if you are not already enrolled in Mary Sloan’s MAD program — is to find half-anhour a day where you can innovate and become the master of your own domain (not meant in the “Seinfeld” way, I wouldn’t want to take that away from kids).

I shudder to think where I would be if it wasn’t for lunch hour football.

Finding A Gem

First Nation craft fair showcases Yukon talent, Feb. 22 & 23

t can take approximately six days to hand-make a traditional pair of beaded moosehide moccasins. That’s why they cost about $250.

But when you splurge on a pair your feet will be toasty warm and you’ll be walking around in artwork.

During the Sourdough Rendezvous weekend, the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre is hosting a craft fair with approximately 25 to 30 artisans.

Liz Smith, Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre administration assistant, organized the sale. And she knows what it’s like to fall in love with moccasins. She bought hers at the centre’s Christmas craft fair.

“They had a nice eagle design on them that was well-beaded and the inside was right comfy,” Smith says. “And they were from Annie Smith — she’ll be back at this upcoming craft fair. She’s a well-respected elder from the village (McIntyre Subdivision).”

Smith was ready for the hefty price tag because she knows how much work goes into them.

“My auntie said it takes about five or six days — if she’s on it 247,” Smith says. “And this is people who have been making slippers for years and beyond years.”

When you buy moccasins or any other crafts from the artisans you’ll be helping to keep First Nations culture alive.

“The people will still keep on making these things because people will buy it, so there’s a big impact,” Smith says. “It shows superb support. It makes the crafters feel respected.”

Artisans will be coming from

several communities including Haines Junction, Marsh Lake, Pelly Crossing and Watson Lake. They’ll be bringing mittens, mukluks, soap and lotions, knitted hats and many more useful things, as well as fine art pieces such as paintings and carvings. Prices range from $10 for a beaded moosehide ponytail holder in the shape of a flower to $1000 for a framed, carved mask.

Dennis Shorty will be bringing his carvings. Shorty, a member of the Kaska Dena First Nation, will be making the five-hour trip in from Ross River. He carves sculptures from caribou, moose and deer antlers as well as sheep and muskox horns. He also makes jewelry made from copper and antler.

“I carve anything that comes to the heart and mind,” Shorty says.

“If I doesn’t, I just leave the antler alone. It has to speak. With the copper, I have to feel it – in my mind’s eye.”

Shorty learned to carve as a child from watching his grandfather and father. Later in life he threw himself into his art as a way to stay sane and stay alive.

“It’s been part of my healing journey; it helps keep me grounded to Mother Earth,” Shorty says. “I’m one of the survivors of a residential school. So that’s what has kept me going all these years. And music, too.”

school in Lower Post, B.C. for seven years between the ages of five and 12. He is now 54 years old.

“In the last 10 years I finally started living,” he says. “Before that, everything was just a nightmare. I couldn’t tell if I was coming or going. I couldn’t tell if things were real or not real. It’s hard to explain. I hate to say it, but you have to go through it to understand.”

With his wife Jennifer Froehling managing the marketing aspect of his business, his work has

been garnering attention locally, nationally and internationally.

This year he will be having his second show in Germany and he has been invited to the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa as part of the Northern Scene showcase. His art may turn out to be a shrewd investment.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow

If I remember correctly, those mounds are a pickup truck, a car and a minivan.

A

deep-freeze has hit Dawson City several times since mid-December and every time we come out of it there’s a big dump of snow. At the end of January we received another 22 cm of snow, blanketing everything in the community.

There’s been something like a metre (or more) of the white stuff since Christmas and it’s been coming in big deposits that run over a period of two days.

The Fulda Extreme Sports group got dumped on when they arrived in town on Jan. 12. They even had to break trail on the Dempster Highway to get back here from Eagle Plains Lodge. They were delighted that the snow gave them a chance to show off Fulda’s winter tires, but I’m not sure the rest of us were so pleased.

The town was hit again just

about a week later and this batch came with a stiff breeze that compacted our usually fluffy snow, piling it up and making it harder to move out of the way.

Often we can clear our walks and stairs nicely with a broom.

Not lately.

The City’s contractor has been busy on a daily basis clearing streets, and pick-ups with plough attachments have been going through the back lanes. There are men and women with shovels and snow sweepers all over the boardwalks around town — a municipal bylaw requires businesses to keep them clear for pedestrians.

Major streets in town are lined with berms averaging 80 cm in height, resulting from the initial efforts of the graders. Many streets have small hills where the loaders have been building piles

to shovel into the trucks.

Stand on Front Street for a while and you can see a steady parade of snow filled trucks heading back and forth to the dumping grounds.

Any vehicle that hasn’t moved for a while has been reduced to a shapeless lump of snow, while those that are moving are crashing through berms to get in and out of their driveways. Those people whom park on the street can face a considerable task to get free of the little forts that the ploughs have made around them.

The City did issue a warning about leaving vehicles, thus block snow-clearing efforts. Fines and towing were mentioned, but it seems likely that the people who might be hired to do the towing are already too busy doing the clearing.

In late December concern was expressed at a council meeting that the amount of snow clearing was burning through that line item of the budget.

It came up again at a recent meeting, but we learned that the 2012 budget year is over and that we are now working with the provisional budget for 2013, so we aren’t going to be buried.

Not permanently at least.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

crabble made international headlines recently when University of California cognitive scientist and computative data analyst Joshua Lewis suggested changing Scrabble’s ageold scoring system.

Here in Whitehorse, the 15-year-old Scrabble Club plans to use the well-loved, original Butts system for their regular Sunday gatherings and the Yukon Scrabble Championships on Sunday, Feb. 24.

Alfred Butts, the inventor of the game, assigned the original value for each letter by studying the frequency of words in the New York Times. Seventy-five years later, Joshua Lewis claims that as language changes, so should the values for each letter played.

Lesley Ciarula Taylor reported in the Jan. 22 issue of the The

Toronto Star that Lewis’s newly written, open-source software measures the frequency of letters in language while weighing their value against the length of a word. And based upon his computations, Lewis suggests changing letter values according to usage.

For example, while the original value of Z is 10 points, Lewis suggests 6 allotted points.

When Lewis posted his software on his blog in mid-January the Scrabble world noticed.

Within days the page garnered over 10,000 hits and Scrabble fans worldwide have since been hotly debating the issue. Richard Alleyne reported in the Jan. 15 issue of United Kingdom newspaper The Telegraph that John Chew, co-president of the North American Scrabble Players Association claimed there would

be “catastrophic outrage“ if the scoring system were to change.

I asked Whitehorse Scrabble Club co-coordinator Micah Quinn for his thoughts the controversy.

“It’s an interesting thought that the rules to a word game should change as the language evolves,” Quinn says. “My initial reaction is that no, the game should stay the way it is. When playing, you don’t really think about why letters have certain point values, they just do and you make plays accordingly. Perhaps I’m a purist but I love the game the way it is”.

Founded 15 years ago by Rick Steele, the Whitehorse Scrabble Club meets every Sunday to play.

The atmosphere is friendly and newcomers are welcome.

“I grew up playing strategy/ logic games like Scrabble, chess,

poker, etc. and have always had a love for them,” Quinn says. “You can always improve and every game is different. It’s really about challenging yourself. For Scrabble, it is largely skill but luck is enough of a factor (what letters you pull from the bag), so that weaker players always have a chance. I also enjoy the social aspect of the game, especially at the Whitehorse club where we play at the Gold Rush every Sunday afternoon, often with pint in hand.”

The Whitehorse Scrabble Club will host the inaugural Yukon Scrabble Championships at the Gold Rush Inn on Sunday, Feb. 24, but you need to register by Feb. 22. Check-in is at 9:30 a.m. and the first letter tiles will be pulled at 10 a.m.

The entry fee is $25, or $10

with a North American Scrabble Players Association (NASPA) membership. Players are guaranteed at least six 50-minute timed, 2-player games with what’s called modified Swiss pairings and standard NASPA scoring.

And by the way, the official Tournament Word List dictionary will be applied.

If you can’t make it to the tournament, you can always play a friendly game or two each Sunday at the Gold Rush Inn between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Zero Dark Thirty Delivers

Now playing at Qwanlin theatre in Whitehorse

A

merican actress Jessica Chastain redeems her loopy performance in The Tree Of Life with her role in Zero Dark Thirty. The film tells the story of how the CIA ultimately captured and killed its arch enemy Osama Bin Laden after 10 years of pursuing him. Chastain plays an intelligence agent named simply Maya, who is probably a composite of a real-life person involved in the hunt, but we’re never quite sure.

Director Kathryn Bigelow, who previously won an Oscar for the military film The Hurt Locker reveals that the film’s title derives from the military term for 30 minutes after midnight, the hour at which Bin Laden was killed, and the darkness and secrecy that cloaked the entire decade-long mission.

The film has been nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Chastain and Best Original Screenplay for Mark Boal, who also collaborated with Bigelow on The Hurt Locker.

It’s hard to build suspense in a story whose outcome is already well known, but over the course of its two-and-a-half hour running time, Zero Dark Thirty manages to do just that.

Chastain is handed that rarest of roles: a tough and competent, non-stereotyped woman — thoroughly professional — who knows her job and brooks no nonsense from her male counterparts.

However, she also relies on her intuition, which flies in the face of CIA common wisdom and ultimately proves correct.

She counters the widely-held belief that bin Laden is holed up in a remote cave somewhere in the back hills of Afghanistan with the theory that he’s in a walled compound in the middle of a Pakistan town, a stone’s throw from a military college.

Maya’s further suspicion, that the Pakistani government has some knowledge of his where-

For a large part of the film, we’re witness to the intramural struggles within the CIA hierarchy, with the cave-dwelling faction arrayed against Maya’s incredible belief that their quarry is hiding from them in plain sight.

In between, we are regaled with graphic portrayals of the infamous waterboarding routine, euphemistically labeled as “extended interrogation techniques.”

Zero Dark Thirty proved controversial on a number of fronts, among them a public assertion among some critics that it glorified torture as a means of securing key intelligence that broke the case open.

American Republican Party sources also criticized the initial timing for the film’s debut. Originally scheduled to be released in October 2012, Barack Obama’s political opponents claimed the timing would give the incumbent President an unfair advantage in his re-election bid.

Ultimately, Zero Dark Thirty was released in December, with the producers claiming that the decision had nothing to do with political considerations.

Controversy aside, it’s a powerful and engrossing film that chronicles recent history in a realistic, gritty and non-sensationalistic manner. It richly deserves its Oscar nominations.

Zero Dark Thirty plays at 7:15 p.m. for one nightly showing only at the Qwanlin Cinema Centre in Whitehorse. It is rated 14A for violence.

Time for Birds with Jenny Trapnell

Sign On for the Great Backyard Bird Count It’s for the birds (in a good way)

the National Audubon Society, Bird Studies Canada and sponsor Wild Birds Unlimited. Its aim, like the Christmas Bird Count and similar events, is to help get a better snapshot of bird populations, species and trends — and celebrate birdlife at the same time.

The easy-to-use website at www.BirdSource.org has all the information you need to take part. Observers are encouraged to count birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the event and send in a list for each day.

If you can enter your checklists and photos on line, your results are tabulated with others from across the Yukon as well as North America. And by the way, the photo gallery is also worth a visit.

Teachers, families and community groups are encouraged to sign up. There’s a specific link for kids and a handy resource called Learn about Birds.

“It’s a great way to see which

ukoners are invited to join people from throughout North America and the world in search of birds this weekend as part of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC).

Unlike the one-day Christmas counts with more rigid rules (and often frigid conditions), the GBBC is an-all ages “keep it simple” event taking place Feb. 15 to 18.

You can look for birds anywhere – your greenbelt, popular birding locations (Millennium Trail, McIntyre Creek wetlands, Tagish Bridge) or just out your kitchen window.

“Even though it’s less structured, it still provides some interesting records and a sense of the diversity of species,” says local biologist and birder Cameron Eckert.

Launched 16 years ago mainly as a feeder-watcher activity, the GBBC is led by the venerable Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology,

birds have survived winter in the Yukon and occasionally get a first hint of our spring birds with Red Crossbills, Snow Buntings and Trumpeter Swans showing up,” says Eckert.

It’s also a great time to put out bird feeders. Eckert suggests putting out a suet feeder — raw chunks of fat in an onion mesh bag — which woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees and magpies will love. Black oil sunflowers seeds are also a good choice.

Some of my favourite birds to watch are the Red-breasted Nuthatch, which is a teeny bird with a sharp bill that climbs trees in my greenbelt looking for bugs; and Black-capped and Boreal Chickadees as well as the rarer Mountain Chickadee, which sports a white streak above the eye.

At the edge of the ice near open water you might get lucky and see a slate-grey American Dipper, a rare wintering American

Robin or pretty black and white ducks – Common and Barrow’s Goldeneyes. Listen for owls and woodpeckers, too.

Large flocks of Bohemian Waxwings, beautiful robin-sized birds with lemon-yellow-dipped tail feathers, in search of berries are abundant this year.

Last year 43 Yukoners in seven communities took part in the GBBC, with 25 Whitehorse checklists submitted. Battling for the Right to Rock Main Stage

A

staple of the Frostbite Music Festival will kick off this year’s event and showcase the multitude of young talent in the territory. The annual Battle of the Bands competition will take place Friday, February 15 in the Yukon College’s woodshed and will feature eight bands aged 13 to 30.

Six of the bands will be competing for a coveted spot on the Frostbite Main Stage on Saturday night.

“It’s super important and really nice to have an all ages show at such a large event like Frostbite,” explains Scott Carlson, the Whitehorse outreach coordinator for Bring Youth Towards Equality (BYTE), the organization heading up the Battle of the Bands competition. “The youth get pumped to play and they just get a huge amount of exposure.

“People in the music scene see them play and then get interested and invite them to play at other festivals.”

True to his word, two alumni of the competition, who now regularly perform in Whitehorse, will also be participating in the Friday

night concert.

Last year’s winners Zipline will be opening the show with longtime favourites Death in Venice reuniting to close the concert.

The high-energy performances of those bands will be sandwiched with a mix of hip hop, electronic, brass boogie and rock and roll.

“Surprisingly there is no metal this year which is shocking because it usually makes up more than half the line-up,” said Carlson.

And like the festival’s entire line-up for 2013 the youth line-up offers an eclectic selection.

Arc is the loud and layered electronic solo project of Andrew G. Smith and combines rock and roll with electronic music — creating a sound described as bold and dynamic.

The Brass Knuckle Society (BKS), made up of trumpets, tubas, drums and sax aims to play music from around the world. The oldest participants in the competition, the BKS perform in suits and call their music the kind your grandparents used to dance to.

feature female vocalists in Madi Dixon and Selina Heyligers-Hare and despite their young age, the musicians are already veterans of the Whitehorse music scene. Both have performed at Arts in the Park.

Dead Simple played last years Battle of the Bands while Solid Fuel was part of the Blue Feather Music Festival line-up.

Rounding out the six-band competition is the Pelly Road Street Band (PRSB) and Vision Quest, featuring Nick Johnson and Yudii Mercredi, two aspiring First Nation hip hop artists who were born and raised in Whitehorse. The duo is currently working on their first EP. “Frostbite is such a unique and really cool creative outlet especially for kids who may not be interested in other activities be it sports or academics, says Carlson.

“This gives them a really neat way to succeed and get involved.

“A lot of kids feel there’s not enough in town to do so this is really important for them.”

Rekindling a Passion for Culture Pelly Crossing youth perform traditional songs and dance

T

he students of Eliza Van Bibber School, along with numerous supportive partners, are reviving the cultural wellbeing of the community through traditional practices.

It started with a music psychology student from Ryerson University in Toronto. Arla Good had the incentive to learn about the traditional music of the North.

“I had a spark of an idea last year to look at how learning the music of your own culture can assist in developing a sense of cultural identity, self-esteem, pride, a sense of community, and a connection to the school system,” says Good. “For personal reasons I wanted to travel to the Yukon

and learn about the North. I did an Internet search in hopes of finding Yukon Aboriginal music and one man’s name continuously appeared.”

The name was Jerry Alfred, Keeper of the Songs. Alfred is a Juno Award winner, a well-known Yukon musician and an elder belonging to the Selkirk First Nation.

“I sent Jerry Alfred an email with my ideas and he was interested about the suggestion and put me in touch with Eliza Van Bibber School (EVBS) principal, Keith Clarke,” Good says.

“Keith and I then started a partnership, but to make a program like this work, we needed the support of Pelly Crossing. We

reached out to members of Selkirk First Nation. Individuals like Carmen Baker who has the passion and spirit to bring music to the children and youth at the school was included in the partnership.”

Baker, who is of Tlingit/Northern Tutchone descent, is also the founder of the Selkirk Spirit Dancers (SSD). She, along with local elders SSD members played the traditional role in educating the students this winter — teaching them the songs and dance that instilled pride in the community.

A gala event was then held in December to show their talents.

Elder Lizzie Hall, Ernestine Hager, many parents, families, and numerous supportive community members worked hard to ensure that each child was dressed head to toe in traditional regalia at the evening.

that their Northern Tutchone culture will be preserved by instilling traditional values in their youth of today.

“I’ve had trouble putting into words what I experienced at the gala event,” Good says. “We never could have imagined the success that we witnessed in the performances and in the responses of the community. A lot of tears of joy were shed.”

Baker says she is very proud of the children for all their hard work.

“I knew right from the beginning that they were going to have a powerful impact on the community for learning our culture and bringing it back alive in this community,” She says. “A lot of the children were looking forward to me coming in. I started to hear feedback from the parents saying that their children were singing traditional songs at home, so it showed that they were interested in learning.”

Baker would like to explore possibility of taking the young dancers further and says the majority of the children will be joining the Selkirk Spirit Dancers group.

“It has also been suggested to take the performance and show their talent to the neighboring Northern Tutchone communities of Carmacks and Mayo.”

The successful program and event has left a solid connection between the community, Eliza Van Bibber School and Selkirk First Nation.

Each partner played a vital role; Carmen Baker, Arla Good, Eliza Van Bibber School, and Selkirk First Nation would like to extend their great appreciation and gratitude to all who made this possible.

A few tequila shots are a cheaper investment than dinner for two — and likely to generate a far better return.

If scavenging isn’t your thing, or the vortex of circling vultures with a similar agenda is killing your odds, why not send an exploratory text to the available women in your address book and hope for a Hail Mary offer you can’t refuse?

If nothing else, just enjoy your evening of freedom. Next Valentine’s Day might find you in a noisy restaurant, waiting an hour for your hot mess of wings, enduring the cold shoulder for your (apparently) minimal romantic effort and remembering a fortune cookie you once read, saying: “Be careful what you wish for.”

I

f there is any disadvantage to being a skier from the Yukon it’s the remoteness; we are as far from Russia as we are the eastern provinces.

Traveling out east, I try to make the most of the trip by finding the most efficient and cost effective way to attend as many races as I can.

I take advantage of any personal connections I can find to make my stay more affordable — family, friends, friends’ friends. I’ve even gone as far as friends’ friends’ friends to shortcut a hotel.

Of the five weeks I’ve been away from home I only had to eat Super 8’s Eggo waffles for three breakfasts.

After finishing up in Thunder Bay with the Yukon Elite Squad and instead of making the 5,000

km journey home, we hopped the border, drove through the night, dodged deer and made our way to Minneapolis, Minnesota for races of January 19 and 20.

Global warming welcomed us to the United States with a good old rain shower. Race conditions were not so hot (or too hot, rather), but it did make things more interesting. That’s one great thing about skiing; you’re not swimming back and forth in the same straight line, you’re not running the same direction around a standard track and you’re not trying to score on the same sized net. There’s something different for every race.

The first race in Minneapolis was a 10 km skate race. The track was blistering fast and the race was over in only 22 minutes. Usually a “ten k” would take 26 or 27 minutes. The track was blistering fast and the race was over in 22 minutes my race suit. The racecourse was more or less the same skating rink that last week’s rain turned it into.

We stood anxiously at the start line; 150 athletes champing at the bit. It went off like a stampede: charging wild beasts, as if from The Lion King. It was hard to move. One stumble and 10 people pass you. It was about as close to the Red Bull Crashed Ice competition as you could get without wearing skates. I narrowly avoided several crashes until I met my fate on an icy corner when two other guys went down right in front of me. My teammate David Greer went on to get third place. Having a fellow Yukoner on the podium is always the next best thing to being up there yourself.

The following day Minneapolis had its coldest day in four years.

Much to our disappointment the sprint race was cancelled. That put a wrap to our racing in the States. We headed back up to Ontario for… you guessed it, more races.

welve years ago a friend introduced me to the sport by taking me on a three-day trip up Mount Hood, east of Portland, Oregon.

I returned home to the Yukon, excited about my discovery and talked to anyone who would listen to find partners for my newfound passion. The problem was, I could not do it alone.

One of my verbal gushings was directed at my massage therapist, who told me that he knew someone who was also new to ice climbing and looking for a partner. He brought us together.

My relationship with this new partner was complicated from the first week. Activities included a search and rescue training weekend, a belay practice and, scariest of all, a date. Indication that he wanted to be more than just a climbing buddy appeared in the form of a present at dinner — a small white box with a red bow.

Inside was a poem he wrote for me about our apparent future in the wild, a single red rose and a new carabineer for my harness.

I was just out of a 23-year marriage and was freaked out about the idea of a romantic relationship.

I did my best over the next few months to stick to climbing, skiing and hiking, but eventually my resolve wasted away.

Over the next few winters we ice climbed in disparate places like Ouray, Colorado and Valdez, Alaska.

We started our climbing right here in Whitehorse at McIntyre Creek on the Fish Lake Road. That venue is no longer available, but there are many other hidden gems to try.

One of our favourites is an area of ravines on the north side of the Alaska Highway at Toad River, just south of the Liard Hot Springs. You can climb the gentle undulations and short vertical pitches of the ravine overflows during the day and soak in the hot pools by night.

Closer to home, a local entrepreneur Chris Gishler has been building ice climbing towers up to 30.5 metres (100 feet) since 2006.

They have found their home at Takhini Hot Springs, along with a zip line and an ice trek.

His company, Equinox Adventures gives newbies a chance to check out the sport safely, with expert instruction. They supply all the equipment, all you need is good outdoor clothing and a warm hat —and no pom-poms allowed, it has to fit under a helmet.

One of Equinox’s instructors is Ryan Agar. He calls himself an evolving climber. He admits he is always looking for a scarier and harder thing and found his way from rock to ice when working with Gishler.

“We try to have one or two activities a month,” he says. This includes one ice trip per month in the winter. Agar has recently published an updated rock-climbing guide for the Yukon.

Alain Dallaire, another avid climber, has published a book documenting ice climbs in the Yukon. He’s been climbing here for more than 20 years and told me his favourite climb is “the one where I am the first one that climbs it.”

When pressed, he names Fungi Phobia on White Mountain, a mixed climb (rock as well as ice) that gains about 300-400 metres (9841312 feet) in elevation.

You have no excuses if you are looking to add a little spice to your winter adventuring. You don’t have to spend a bunch of money on gear, you don’t have to drive any further than the Takhini Hot Springs and falling in love with a climbing partner is optional — but it worked for me. I love ice climbing and I am in love because of ice climbing.

Rookies Race Alongside Pros During Rendezvous

mong the many events taking place during the Sourdough Rendezvous weekend is a dog-powered race that mid-distance rookies are welcome to join.

The Dog Powered Sports Association (DPSAY) is hosting the annual mid-distance race from Whitehorse, northwest to the Mendenhall Subdivision and back, called the River Runner 120. This year the race takes place on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Dogs are a big part of our Yukon communities and during the long winter it is important to find fun outdoor activities that keep the dogs — and their owners — in shape.

Skiing with your dog(s) or running them with a sled is a great way to improve your quality of life. People who come out to the monthly Yukon Brewing Twister

or as the last test before the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Skijorers can also participate for 60 miles (96 km) or 120 miles (193 km), making the River Runner one of the longest skijoring races in the world.

Whitehorse resident Adam Robinson started mushing six years ago and is now a guide at Sky High Wilderness Ranch. He participated in the 2012 River Runner, his first race longer than 30 miles (48 km). This year, Robinson will run the race as a skijorer, an activity he started doing only a winter ago.

“It was a great opportunity for me to learn a little bit about how a race with a checkpoint works and to see how my dogs performed over that distance,” Robinson says.

How to Make a Tender Dish Out of Tough Meat T

hey say that with a big bull bison even the gravy is tough. If you are in possession of such an animal you may have 900 pounds of very tough meat. Some moose are just as tough.

The following suggestions may help you create meals to be enjoyed by everyone.

First, make as much ground meat as you can use. Ground meat is never tough. It can then be used in some big batches of spaghetti sauce or chilli as well as burgers, meat-loaf, soups and stews. Freeze and label the meat in meal-size portions.

You can have various flavours of sausages professionally made or you can make your own using a binder (flavour) kit, or your own recipe.

Thinner steaks can be run through a cutlet machine, which is a many-bladed set of rollers that penetrate the steak as it runs through. They can also be pounded with a meat mallet to make cutlets or schnitzel meat. The pounding routine always tenderizes the steaks to a greater extent than the cutlet machine.

Aging in a marinade for 3-7 days works too. Put the cut in a Ziploc bag with the marinade, then knead and turn the bag a few times a day. The marinade can be as simple as olive oil and garlic, but anything in the barbeque sauce rack at your local grocery
