I

n December 2010 I moved into my current residence on Normandy Road in Takhini. Joining me as roommates were Gavin Gardiner from Saskatoon and Jayden Soroka from Regina. In January 2011, Weyburn’s own Shawn O’Dell also moved in.

With three-quarters of our household originating from Saskatchewan it was natural to begin calling our large, white house, the Saskatchewan Embassy.

When Gavin moved away near the end of 2011, Jennifer Duncombe, also from Saskatchewan, replaced him. And in March 2013 Jenny’s cousin Taylor Tiefenbach joined us. In our three-year history we have never had less than two Saskatchewanians living here.

And though “the Embassy” moniker originated as a joke between friends, we began sponsoring plays (my own, included) and hosting house concerts.

Soon, a picture of former premier Tommy Douglas was posted in our entranceway. Following that, someone installed a clock perpetually set to Saskatchewan time. The Embassy had become an entity.

So, on November 17, when the Saskatchewan Roughriders booked their ticket to the Grey Cup with a 35-13 trouncing of the fumbleprone Calgary Stampeders, it was only proper decorum for us to host a Grey Cup party the following weekend. We rearranged the furniture, bought cable television for the event, and stocked our fringe full of Vitamin P (if you don’t know, I’m not going to explain).

Roughriders’ fans need no help getting rowdy for a championship game, but this year fuel was added to their fire because the game was actually being hosted

by Regina. Furthermore, their opponents, the Hamilton Tiger Cats, previous faced Saskatchewan in the 1989 Grey Cup. The Riders won that contest 43-40 in what is widely considered to be one of the greatest CFL games of all time.

On a more personal level, Taylor, the Embassy’s resident sports nut, has family connections.

His grandfather, Ron Atchison was a defensive lineman when the Riders won their first cup in 1966.

Famous for wielding a plaster forearm cast long after his injury had healed, Atchison was inducted

into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1978.

Given all these factors, the atmosphere in the Saskatchewan Embassy was throbbing with anticipation as the kick-off approached.

Alas, once the game actually started, it soon descended into a rout. The Riders caught a few lucky breaks early, and their stud running back Kory Sheets picked apart the Ti-Cats defense at will.

By halftime Saskatchewan had a 31-6 lead. They cruised to a 4523 throttling — their fourth Grey Cup. How is an embassy supposed to celebrate its homeland’s international victories, particularly if those victories are lopsided?

We decided that a round of green Jell-O shots followed by a trip to the local tavern was in order. Contrary to every bar in Saskatchewan that night, the one we arrived at was empty. It was a reminder that ambassadors and ex-pats are sometimes forced to celebrate their triumphs alone.

Still, it didn’t stop Taylor from glowing with diplomatic immunity.

H

elping an athlete to manage mental pressure is one of the most important factors for Alain Masson. Athletes need this kind of mental skill if they’re going to try out for the Olympics — and we’re all pretty proud when hometown athletes take the podium.

Masson knows that kind of pressure – he has competed in three Olympics. For the last 18 years he has been coaching Yukon youth in cross-country skiing, sharing his knowledge of what it takes to compete at a high-performance level.

And during the time he has been head coach of the Yukon Ski Team, 14 athletes have risen to

the national team.

Last week, Alain Masson was inducted into the Sport Yukon Hall of Fame for his contributions to the development of the sport.

The success of the program with Masson at the helm can be seen not only with the parade of skiers who have made it to the national team, but also in the Olympic hopefuls we have right now.

Graham and Emily Nishikawa, who were coached by Masson and are now training at the national centre in Canmore, are hoping to compete for team Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

make it,” Masson says. “They’re at the right age, right stage in their career, and they have as good a chance as other athletes. They’ve got great fitness and great mental disposition. Now everything has to fall into place – for example, be healthy and be injury-free.”

Even for athletes of their level, it’s not easy to get to the Olympics.

There hasn’t been a Yukon cross-country skier on the Canadian Olympic team since Masson’s wife, Lucy Steele-Masson, competed in the 1992 Olympics (she is also in the Sport Yukon Hall of Fame).

Nevertheless, even if we don’t get to cheer any homegrown athletes in 2014, Masson says the skills all athletes develop through rigorous athletic training help them in any profession they choose.

“One of the reasons for (highperformance athletic training) is not just for the outcome reasons – like winning,” Masson says. “It’s building their self-confidence, giving them mental skills for training to be successful. They develop a good work ethic – they become really good citizens. De-

pendable. They work really hard; they are efficient, because that’s what they do to be successful (in sport). They’re a gold mine for an employer.”

In addition to developing lifelong skills, the athletes are also exposed to different cultures and people around the world. Being able to bring those experiences and skill-sets into the lives of youth is important to Masson.

“That’s one of the reasons I decided to do this,” Masson says.

Last year, for example, Masson accompanied Yukon cross-country ski athletes to Turkey to compete in the Under-23 World Championships. Of the 16 competitors on the Canadian cross-country ski team, five of them were from the Yukon. Thus, his program was a success in terms of performance, but also in terms of the opportunities that it afforded the athletes.

It’s been a long-term commitment.

“The program has gone from having a much smaller community of skiers to having one of the strongest programs with athletes at the national level,” Masson says. “It doesn’t happen quickly – it takes about 10 years.”

It also helps that we’ve got a great winter here in the Yukon.

“The ski season is one of the longest in Canada, so that allows us to do that much more specific training,” Masson says. “We’re on snow – on skis – on average seven months of the year. Whereas in Ontario you’ve got three months.”

Sport Yukon executive director Tracey Bilsky says that thanks to Masson and the program he has developed, our homegrown athletes are now a force to be reckoned with.

“Cross-country skiing is one of the sports where having ‘Yukon’ on your back does not mean you’re an underdog – it means you’re to be feared,” Bilsky says.

“And that is because of the work and the structure that Alain Masson has put into the club here. He has been able to develop a solid volunteer coaching club and that is integral to the success.”

Annual Yukon Author Book Signing Extravaganza takes place Dec. 7

LS: We are having more and more authors form year to year. It’s amazing how many writers are living in the Yukon. I actually made a list for the library and found out that there are 65 authors living and writing in the Yukon.

I am pretty excited about this year’s event; we will have nine authors presenting their books.

ER: What is the highlight of this year’s event?

LS: I am excited about the book Whitehorse: An Illustrated History

by Helene Dobrowolsky and Linda Johnson. It’s the first book about the complete history of Whitehorse with beautiful old photographs in it.

Another book I am excited about is The Ladybug Ring by Astrid Zoer. This book is about a woman writing down her mother’s memories of Holland during the Second World War. My in-laws are Dutch, so I am going to get a signed copy for them.

ER: Which other authors will be there presenting their books?

Do you think the event can help foster a better understanding of native life and culture in the Yukon?

LS: Aboriginal culture is a big part of the Yukon. And so is native literature. I Was Born Under A Spruce Tree is a great book based on J.J. Van Bibber’s stories and his life. You can learn a lot about First Nation culture and life by reading this book.

Alex and Pat Van Bibber will be there to sign the book. They are looking forward to talking to people, sharing stories and presenting the book.

Another book on the List is Summer Snow by Eleanor Millard, which is based on her own experience by adopting an aboriginal girl who has FASD. I am looking forward of having all these authors in the bookstore.

ER: What do you think makes the Yukon such a special place for literature, given there are 65

LS: We have an eclectic group of writers in the Yukon. Every one of them has a very different story to tell. That, in itself, is what makes the Yukon a special place for literature. The rich history along with the peacefulness and beauty of our territory provides great material.

We also have two great platforms to help provide writers with a base to pen their works. The Berton House Writers’ Retreat in Dawson City provides the perfect setting for authors to contemplate and write their stories, and the yearly Yukon Writers Conference is a great opportunity for people to converse and showcase their writing to professionals.

The Annual Yukon Author Book Signing Extravaganza takes place on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mac’s Fireweed Books, located at 203 Main Street in Whitehorse.

Throughout the week watch for the Learning Disabilities Association of Yukon (LDAY) who will be selling their traditional CHRISTMAS CARNATIONS ($20/ dozen), the Community TV Channel 9 will be running disability related content and the Yukon Association for Community Living will coordinate showings of a selection of films produced by the Yuklude Performance group and our national affiliate Canadian Association for Community Living at various community events in collaboration with other Yukon agencies.

Yukon Council on disABILITY’s in Dawson City will be hosting an event for DAW. LDAY, Tr’ondek Hwech’in Community Services, and the Dawson Mental Health Services will also be present, with tables and information. Several community members with disabilities will share their stories and successes and/or hobbies and provide information on their journey, reaching out for help and learning to cope and thrive with their disability(ies). hitehorse resident Gordie Tentrees is giving back to the community that has supported him throughout his 10-year music career.

On December 10, the bluesrock musician is performing a benefit concert called Speedraiser for Paralympic hopeful Jessica Frotten at the Old Fire Hall in Whitehorse.

In 2009, Frotten, a Whitehorse native, was the victim of a car accident that confined her to a wheelchair. Determined to do something positive, Frotten began wheelchair racing. Now she is determined to attend an international qualifying race in Switzerland to make it to the Canadian national team.

Tentrees was inspired when he heard Frotten’s story.

“I really wanted to help a person in need and give something back to the community,” he says.

“I admire Jessica’s courage, and I decided that I would try and help her achieve her dream.

“I just wrote her and asked if I could help. I heard she was borrowing a chair from her racing club to race, and I though that’s not right, she needs her own chair.”

Frotten’s story hit close to home for the singer.

“On New Year’s Eve, a very close friend of mine got into a car accident that left him in a wheelchair,” Tentrees says. “I admired how he was able to move on with his life and not let his disability get in the way of anything.”

They hope the benefit concert raises $2,500, with proceeds going towards travelling costs for the Swiss Circuit race.

Tentrees has also set up a crowd funding campaign on www. indiegogo.com, to raise $5,000 towards the purchase of a new racing chair.

Yukon blues-rock musician Gordie Tentrees is playing a benefit concert for Jessica Frotten called Speedraiser on Dec. 10 at the Old Fire Hall.

This is Tentrees’ first benefit concert, and he hopes to make it an annual event. Joining him on stage will be teen musician Selina Heyligers-Hare, who has played in previous benefit concerts.

Performing with her band Dead Simple, the budding rock star will definitely bring an extra edge to the show.

Having local musicians join him for the concert is important to Tentrees.

“I would like to be able to showcase local talent, so they can have the opportunity to perform, and if this is something I can do every year that would be awesome,’ he says.

Frotten, who currently lives in Regina and is a member of the Saskatoon Cyclones Racing Club, is excited about the Speedraiser concert.

“I don’t know Gordie personally, so when he wrote me I was completely surprised,” she says.

To date, Frotten has won five gold medals at various events.

Although she did not make a conscious decision to be a racer, she is glad she has the talent for it.

“I was just looking for exercise while being in a wheelchair,” she says. “I tried different sports, but racing was the only one which appealed to me.”

Once Frotten committed herself to the sport, she began attending track meets and participating in different races, like the Dogwood Track and Field Meet in May 2013 in British Columbia at the University of Victoria. At this race she challenged herself in the 400 m and the 1500 m races. Her determination paid off; she won gold.

Wheelchair racing, like any sport, comes with a disciplined training regimen. Everyday Frotten spends two hours training for a race, followed by another workout program.

The Swiss Circuit race will be her first time competing internationally, and is the next step towards becoming a member of the Canadian team for the 2016 Paralympics.

With community support, and the musical styles of Gordie Tentrees and Selina Heyliger-Hare, Jessica Frotten’s Paralympic dream is just one race away.

Whitehorse Lions Club Auction offers chance to shop while giving back to community

T

he Whitehorse Lions Club has been in operation for approximately six decades and during that time they have provided community support in many areas, from sponsoring sport teams to helping people with disabilities. They also help fund the Easter Seals House in Vancouver, where Yukon families are able to stay while receiving medical treatment.

The Lions Club raises almost all of its funds for these endeavors through just one yearly event: the Whitehorse Lions Club Internet and TV Auction. This year the 58th annual auction takes place on December 14 from 4 p.m. to midnight.

“We assist with a casino at (Sourdough) Rendezvous, but this is our major fund raising event,” says Lions Club member David Knight. “It’s a lot of fun. None of us are experts, but it’s a great community event.”

The auction will be broadcast on Northwestel cable television Channel 9. Items up for bidding will be shown on the channel along with a phone number to call to place a bid. The auction will also take place online at www.WhitehorseLionsClub.com/auction.

The auction receives many donations from businesses, both locally and from communities in Alaska. Common items include home renovation supplies and outdoor equipment, from barbeques to wheelbarrows, as well as gift certificates to restaurants and other businesses.

All items are available for bidding right away, and each hour a different grouping of items will close. Generally the more valuable items will stick around until the final hour, which in past years have included airline tickets, bicycles, and fishing rods.

“One of the things that’s great about the auction is that year after year we go back to the businesses in town (and Alaska) and for a lot of them there’s never a hesitation for wanting to donate

to the auction,” says Knight.

“It’s almost like they’ve been waiting for our call.”

Kenneth Howard first moved to Whitehorse 10 years ago, and has been bidding in the auction ever since.

“It’s always nice to see money going back into the community,” he says.

“I bid on stuff that, most times, I need, or at least think I need. It’s just another avenue to pick up good products and it goes to a good cause at the same time.”

He keeps coming back, though he hasn’t always ended up with what he wanted.

“Sometimes I don’t get anything – it just depends how high I want to go with the bids,” Howard says. “We’ll go through the list – my wife and I – and see what we need and what we can buy. If it’s something we don’t really need then we’ll stand down.”

That’s the fun of an auction.

“You’ve gotta’ watch it right until the last minute,” Howard says. “They’ll have a countdown on it and somebody might get that last phone call in there, and a lot of times when you lose it it’s right at closing time. Either way, it’s a fun way to spend an evening.”

Howard’s most prized win from a past auction is a fishing pole from Haines, Alaska.

“I didn’t realize until afterwards, but the guy who makes them is right there in Haines,” Howard says. “He makes them in his house and I guess he’s quite known in that area. So yeah, it’s a nice pole.”

Yukon organizations seeking volunteers for a variety of activities

I

came across this tidbit in the government study “Volunteering in Canada” by Mireille Vézina and Susan Crompton: In 2010, 88 per cent of Yukoners polled volunteered informally by doing things like shovelling a neighbour’s walkway, or taking tea to auntie.

Meanwhile, 45 per cent said they did not volunteer formally in their community because no one asked them to.

Which is funny, because your neighbour probably didn’t ask you to shovel her driveway either, but you still did. Nevertheless, many not-for-profit organizations and charities continually need formal volunteers.

The organization Volunteer Yukon has a long list of local organizations that are seeking volunteers – from spending time with youth through Big Brothers and Big Sisters Yukon, to being a volunteer fire fighter in Haines Junction, to being a radio host for CJUC 92.5 FM.

Some organizations only need one or two people, and then there are others, like the Humane Society, that are looking for 20 volunteers.

I spoke to Jan Slipetz, volunteer coordinator for the Humane Society Bingo, about the fun things their volunteers get to do.

“Bingo volunteers know their work is going to a good cause and that every Wednesday, a deposit goes into the bank for the animal shelter,” says Slipetz, who has lived in the Yukon since 1975 and has seven adopted dogs and three adopted cats. “All the volunteers love animals,” she says.

“The people involved share that bond. The bingo is a social event, and the volunteers get to know the bingo players. There’s a lot of laughing.”

While Slipetz is quick to note that the bingo has “a great, dedicated core group of volunteers,” they also need to increase the numbers.

Bingo volunteers can work one of two shifts on Wednesdays at the Elk Lodge at 401 Hawkins Ave. During the 4 to 6 p.m. shift, three to four volunteers sell bingo

young adults. They are looking for 10 volunteers to join their team.

“Volunteer needs at Copper Ridge vary according to the residents’ needs, the number of residents, and their program preferences,” says volunteer coordinator Catherine Chenier. “Volunteers help with many different programs — the bingo, music, hand bells, friendly visits, baking, and working in the resident’s onsite store.”

Some people have been volunteering at Copper Ridge Place for a very long time. Take Bob Williamson, for example.

“Bob brings his banjo and has

All these personal reasons add up. Chenier calculated that between April 2012 and March 2013 volunteers put in 2,018 hours at Copper Ridge Place. At 7.5 hours per day, that’s 269 days of volunteer activity in 11 months.

“We have a big volunteer ap-

preciation event once a year with food, gifts, recognition,” says Chenier, who has worked with Copper Ridge Place for two-and-ahalf years after working as a community organizer in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec for 14 years.

“The appreciation events are a lot of fun,” Chenier says. “Volunteers appreciate being appreciated.”

Potential volunteers at Copper Ridge Place, Macaulay Lodge, Thomson Centre, and McDonald Lodge in Dawson City must go through an application process, including a pledge of confidentiality, and a police record check.

Donations Can Go a Long, Long Way

M

aking donations to charities in lieu of giving gifts has become common practice for many people.

Large organizations such as Oxfam and UNICEF have seasonal campaigns where you can buy gifts such as goats, books, and bicycles for communities in developing countries in the name of a loved one. The community will receive a goat, for example, and your gift recipient will get a card or a token gift.

While not all friends and families appreciate the concept of giving a gift to someone by giving a gift to someone else (George Costanza, for example, is not in favour of it), if your friends and family are comfortable with the practice, consider donating to one of the Yukon-based non-profits who are doing good work in needy countries.

These small organizations are run mainly by volunteers and have minimal administrative costs.

For this reason, they can guarantee that your donations go directly to the projects for which they are intended. They can also give you a personal perspective on the work their organizations do.

Fair Aid Society Since 2007, this organization has been providing essential health care to vulnerable and marginalized people in some of the poorest communities of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The society operates three clinics, one of which was rebuilt in the past few years for the modest sum of $10,000 and now serves a population of 5,000.

This Christmas, donors can choose between two fundraising initiatives. The first is a project to install solar panels on the outpost medical clinics, which will require a total of $3,000 per clinic. The second is weekly radio broadcasts, which would deliver health information to more than 100,000 people via an interview-style lesson. The 30-minute radio spots would air in French, Swahili, and Kibira, the tribal language, and cost the organization $65 each.

Fair Aid Society will issue a thank you card for any donation, and can assure that all donations go directly to these initiatives. Donations can be made at CanadaHelps.org, or through the local contacts found at FairAidSociety.org.

Reverend Pritchard lived in Swaziland for 15 years prior to establishing the charity.

Inspiration From the Northern Seas Whitehorse artist Jane Isakson experiences 18 days at sea in the Arctic

Yukon artists Jane Isakson and Joyce Majiski spent 18 days aboard the traditionally-rigged Barquentine tall ship sailing off the coast of Norway.

Whitehorse artist Jane Isakson digests these experiences, which she will develop into large-scale acrylic canvases over the winter.

Every couple of years, Isakson tries to “shake things up” by exploring a new landscape. This fall, she took a voyage on a sail boat off the coast of Norway.

Two years ago, a friend who knew her childhood love of sailing suggested she might be interested in the Arctic Circle Residency, an arts residence aboard a sail boat. Isakson applied, and was offered a place the following year. Fellow Whitehorse art-

ist Joyce Majiski heard of the residency and was accepted to join the same expedition.

Twenty-five artists from all over the world flew into Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway to board the traditionally rigged Barquentine tall ship with its Dutch and German crew. The group sailed into international territory administered by Norway, September 25 to October 13. The artists participated somewhat in the actual sailing of the ship, but were allowed mostly to focus on their artistic investigations.

Isakson spent the trip gathering information and getting a feel for the place. She made some installations along the way, exploring themes connected to the history of navigation in the North.

For example, she recreated the Great Bear constellation on the land at night. The Greeks called Ursa Major Arctos, meaning the bear. As it’s only visible in the North, it gave the Arctic its name.

Isakson also used strips of canvas to collect impressions of rope and anchor chain on the ship. She loved being tied into a safety harness to go out along the bowsprit to put canvas along the furled sail there while the ship was underway.

Their ship sailed to within 600 miles (966 kilometres) of the North Pole, where part of the ocean remains open because of the Gulf Stream. Historically, Europeans mined and whaled extensively here, until the whales were almost gone.

Very few plants grow on the islands the group visited. Isakson walked gingerly over the lichens, respecting how long it took them to grow. Lime green and ochre moss grew in an old whale procont’d on page 15...

Isakson enjoyed the company of the other artists, which included painters, photographers, installation artists, sculptors, musicians, videographers, performance artists and writers.

The artists cooperated to help with each other’s projects. Isak-

son found the diverse points of view interesting. For her, Majiski, and one other woman from Finland, the Arctic landscape was familiar in some ways, but more extreme. For others, including an artist from Brazil, it was utterly new.

“If you get up above tree line, it was similar to that, except

more extreme,” she says. “It took everything to that next level of solitude and stillness.”

Isakson, being used to a certain freedom, found herself hemmed in with the group. They had to stay together because of the presence of polar bears.

She will develop this experience into a body of work at another artist residency in Banff this winter, from mid-January through the end of February.

The first is your profile. If you have set your privacy settings so your profile is not public, the poster will not be able to see the information on it – but that isn’t necessary for the scheme anyway.

The second source is your list of friends. The assumption is that your Facebook friends share your interests, so they are potential marketing targets. And, if their

Like-farming involves getting people to like a post or picture on a particular topic to gather names for targeted marketing. The targeting is based on such things as your interests or age, and what you are asked to like or share.

When you like or share a post or picture on Facebook, your name and a link to your profile is given to the original poster. This provides access to two sources of information for marketing purposes.

Digesting the Facts

Series: How to spend less on pills and get more from food

Setting a relaxing space and taking a few moments to be grateful helps relax and prepare our bodies to receive nourishment.

I

n part one and two of this series, we investigated the effectiveness of synthetic supplements and looked at the natural food sources of our most needed nutrients. Yet, even with a proper diet, health still eludes some people.

What gives?

Although there are many reasons for poor health, most of them start with a compromised digestive system. Our digestive tract is responsible for breaking down food, assimilating nutrients, and preventing pathogens from entering the body. It also plays a central role in elimination of waste.

If waste builds up, the digestive organs become overworked and the whole body begins to suffer.

In particular, both immunity and

self-healing capacity decline.

Many people do not realize that their digestive system is stressed.

It’s a red flag when someone claims, “I can eat anything and everything,” while complaining of various health problems.

Symptoms of a compromised digestive system can include abdominal pain, gas, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, asthma, chronic joint and muscle pain, confusion, mood swings, nervousness, poor immunity, recurrent vaginal or bladder infections, bed-wetting, skin rashes, acne, poor memory, shortness of breath, bloating, aggressive behavior, anxiety, poor libido, sleep disruption and fatigue.

Increasing digestive strength is key to supporting health and heal-

ing. So if you are stressed, ill or fatigued, try following these foodcombination guidelines – they make most efficient use of our digestive enzymes:  Eat fruits alone or with other fruits. Wait 30 to 60 minutes before eating your next snack or meal.  Avoid mixing proteins and starches together (for example, sandwiches, pizza, meat and potatoes). This is especially important at supper so that the body can focus on repair and regeneration, not digestion.  Combine veggies with protein or veggies with carbohydrates.  Do not eat more than one protein per meal. (for example, bacon and eggs)

Drink between meals – not with them – to avoid diluting digestive juices. Chew carefully and thoroughly to activate enzymes in your saliva. Do not to eat the same foods every day as this places stress on enzyme supply. Incorporate more enzyme-rich foods into your diet like raw fruits and vegetables, freshly homemade juices, sprouts, raw apple cider vinegar, and fermented foods.

Last but not least, try eating with gratitude, joy and peaceof-mind. Excessive negativity and worry overstimulates the sympathetic nervous system, which inhibits digestion.

Wise traditions that include setting the space (table), gathering with others, and saying a

blessing before meals relaxes and prepares our bodies to receive nourishment.

It’s important to remember that eating habits develop over a lifetime so making changes takes time.

Next week, we will look at other factors that affect our ability to be nourished by food, and what to look for — and avoid — if you choose to buy supplements.

New Film Highlights Struggles of the Finnish Labour Movement in Thunder Bay O Yukon Film Society presents Under The Red Star Dec. 9

the families were impoverished, with their caregivers and even their children working long hours for pitiful wages.

When the labour temple, largely built by volunteer labour in just four months, was first opened, it quickly became the focal point for the Finnish community’s cultural and political aspirations. Influenced by socialist philosophy imported from their native Finland, workers began to demand an end to child labour and the inauguration of an eight-hour working day.

The Lakehead area became a hub for political activism, and the new labour hall played host to the National Convention of the Canadian Trades and Labour Congress in 1910. A year later, the Social Democratic Party of Canada was founded in the very same hall.

Finnish-language newspapers housed in the new labour temple spread the word of the growing movement, and there soon arose a cadre of local organizers.

Fanning out to the mining camps and the woods to speak to workers in their own language, they urged them to form unions and fight for a better life.

Employing archival footage and reenactments in a seamless fashion, the film tells of the historic Finnish Labour Temple, built in 1910 in Port Arthur, Ontario, now Thunder Bay, on the shores of Lake Superior.

By the turn of the twentieth century, Finnish immigration to North America reached approximately 300,000, and much of it was centred in the Lakehead, with Finns playing a significant role in the area’s social, cultural, and economic life.

The authorities followed her closely, employing spies at her meetings and disrupting her work at every opportunity.

But still she persevered, embodying what a local right-wing newspaper denounced as “the three most common Finnish traits — socialism, atheism and free

love.”

Director Kelly Saxberg’s future film projects include building on the theme of labour struggles with the Finns in Ontario.

“I’m just trying to organize footage for a film called Pulp Friction,” she says. “It’s about forestry industry communities in northern Ontario, Finland, and in Uruguay. In Finland and northern Ontario especially, the pulp mills have been closing, and meanwhile

in South America they’ve been opening massive pulp mills, where they have eucalyptus trees that are fully grown in eight years.”

Under The Red Star plays at 6 p.m. Monday, December 9 at the Old Fire Hall in Whitehorse. It will be followed by David Byrne’s film True Stories at 8 p.m.

A Snapshot of Vanier’s Talent

Local high school celebrates art, culture, and Christmas at the YAC on Dec. 8

M

y name is Clare and I am in Grade 10 at Vanier Catholic Secondary School (VCSS).

I play guitar, bass guitar, drums and sing in Pass Over the Moon, one of the school’s rock bands.

We have five different music programs that run all year: Beginner Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Rock Band, and Choir. Each group rehearses three hours per week, at lunch and after school.

Mrs. Kimberly Hart works very hard to make every class exciting and educational.

This year we have a new approach to Vanier’s Christmas Concert. We are incorporating all of the arts, from visual to culinary, musical to dramatic, in a night of seasonal celebration. The event is called the VCSS Arts and Culture Night and it takes place on Dec. 8 at the Yukon Arts Centre.

Come early to hear music in the front lobby performed by three Vanier students: Kevin McLachlan, Nicole Gauvin, and Julia Frasher.

Prior to the show, there will also be student art displays, Christmas art cards to fundraise for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Christmas culinary creations for sale, and an opportunity to donate to Typhoon Haiyan relief.

The main stage program will start with the Beginner Band who will be making their debut. They will be followed by Vanier’s Battle of the Rock Bands featuring Pass Over the Moon, The Element of Confusion, Mechanical Brides, and Dead Simple performing separately.

After intermission, the choir will perform some Christmas carols. Concert Band and Jazz Band

Wrapping for the Freezer

F

reezer-burn ruins a lot of meat, fish, and vegetables every year.

It is caused by air leakage in the packaging, which allows the moisture to escape, drying out the contents. The drying out process leaves the product looking as if it was burned and it is ruined as far as human consumption is concerned.

This situation can be totally prevented by proper packaging and gentle handling of frozen items.

The most thorough and protective method of wrapping is to use two layers. Place the product in a light plastic baggie such as a produce bag available on rolls at grocery stores. One of these rolls will last a number of years before you need to buy again.

A heavier-duty plastic bag will seal the product adequately, but

sadly when plastic bags are frozen they become brittle and easily broken by rough handling in the freezer. The resulting break in the plastic bag allows an air leak, leading to freezer burn.

Squeeze the air out of the bag manually and then spin the bag to twist and seal the top. Then wrap

ting the paper the right size to avoid wastage.

Turn the square of paper so it is a diamond. Set the product down close to the bottom point of the diamond and roll the paper up over the product about halfway, then fold the sides in to seal them. Continue rolling to maintain the seal at the sides up to the top point of the diamond.

Freezer tape is available but masking tape works very well and is much cheaper. The tape should go completely around the package so the end of the tape is fastened to the beginning of the tape.

It takes a little more time and expense to double wrap, but this way fish will keep for at least twice as long and meat will keep for at least two years.
