Making Plans for the Midnight Sun Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival tickets on sale now for June event by Joslyn Kilborn
Wishing you a Very Merry Christmas and All The Best in 2016!
“I
’m counting down the days,” says Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival president, Robbyn Chiles. With tickets on sale now, it’s a reasonable time to start counting. And rumour has it this year’s
The Gold Sisters
lineup could be the festival’s best yet. Of course, the same rumours circulated last year. This, says Chiles, is because the Haines Junction festival, in its second decade of celebrating the beauty of bluegrass under the midnight sun, has no shortage of talented musicians interested in headlining. The small festival is in a position to turn down musicians

The Grascals tired and make their way to bed after the scheduled performances. Others stay up as long as the sun does – and with the festival scheduled a few days before the solstice, this means all night.
Chiles describes endless campground and alleyway jams alongside visiting musicians; the Kluane peaks looming under a pink sky. “You get confused whether it’s a sunset or a sunrise,” Chiles says.

Plus, for all except one musician this year, none of the performers have been to the Yukon. “We always have a lot of fun with the bands,” says Chiles. “For lots of them it’s their first time being anywhere this far north. “They ask how late they can keep playing till. We tell them till the sun goes down. It never goes down. They don’t believe us.” This year the lineup includes Breaking Glass, Foggy Hogtown Boys, Gold Heart, Nothin’ Fancy, The Grascals, and Volume Five, along with a handful of local favourites like Claire Ness and The Bennett Sun. The Grascals, hailing from
Nashville, Tennessee, are likely the biggest name to enter the scene, with three albums nominated for Grammy’s and a performance at President Obama’s inaugural ball. They’ve also toured and performed with Dolly Parton. Their music is modern bluegrass, deeply influenced by the genre’s history. The Canadian-born Foggy Hogtown Boys began as a group of friends meeting for a weekly gig. Eleven years later, the same members are still making music together – music leans toward bluegrass one minute and old time the next. Then there’s Gold Heart from Virginia. They are three young sisters – the Gold sisters – who write their own songs and perform them on mandolin, guitar, and fiddle. A true family band, their father and brother back them up on bass and banjo. Then, the real highlight of the festival is the Gospel Sunday. After service in the old Anglican log church, the small room fills to the brim to hear the festival musicians play gospel. It isn’t officially part of the festival, so anyone can attend – without a festival pass. Admission is by donation, with proceeds going to the church. The festival also features workshops for musicians of all experience levels – even those beginners who wouldn’t call themselves musicians. One of last year’s workshops was a kids’ fiddle group, attended by a handful of six and sevenyear-olds. After the festival these children went on to start a fiddle group, and Chiles says it’s in the works to arrange for them to play on stage during the festival. “Okay, we’re getting all these fabulous bands from outside,” says Chiles, laughing, “but the real attraction is these kids.” This year’s festival runs June 12 to 16. Tickets can be purchased online at YukonBlueGrass.com, or at Dean’s Strings in Whitehorse and Kluane Machine in Haines Junction. Joslyn Kilborn has a hilarious dog and is currently on Yukon-hiatus with her family in Ontario.

ast month Jesse Cooke was the recipient of the Parks Canada Youth Tourism Entrepreneur Award, at a ceremony held in Ottawa on Dec. 2. Cooke arrived in the Yukon for the first time 10 years ago, studying glaciology at Kluane Lake as part of his University of Ottawa degree program. He says it was the mountains that made him come back here in 2006. “Before that I had never seen a mountain in my life. I loved it,” says the Windsor, Ontario native. “You can’t get flatter than Essex County.” One thing he noticed right away was that it wasn’t easy to get here. Like a lot of people trying to come to the Klondike in the summer in those days, he hitchhiked. He won’t say that the seeds of the idea for Husky Bus were planted then, but the experience did help to motivate him six years later, a year after the fledgling Klondike Development Organization held its community forum on ground transportation. Among the things discussed as needed in the Klondike were an airport shuttle, a taxi service, a bus service between Dawson and Whitehorse, and vehicle and bicycle rentals. Cooke, who had made something of a name for himself as a local musician, and who had had a number of temporary contracts teaching at the Robert Service School, decided that, with his summers free once classes ended, one of those services – the bus run – was worth a try. He launched Husky Bus in the summer of 2012 with just two 15 passenger vans, a cell phone and a pick up spot by the Front Street Gazebo. That year the Dawson City Chamber of Commerce voted Husky Bus the New Business of the Year. Since then, the business has grown, and continues to grow. After a spell working out of a rental space on Front Street, Cooke bought a house on 2nd Avenue and has turned the former Hair We Are shop into Husky HQ. He now runs two 20-seat buses in addition to the original vans, has a scheduled service to White-

guests from some hotels to and from the airport, and employs six other people besides himself. He also got married to girlfriend Sarah, who was his first driver, and they’ve bought a lovely cabin in West Dawson where they live with their new son. The second floor of Husky central is also known as the Little Inn, and offers several options for visitors, from a two bedroom suite to two private rooms. This year he’s giving teaching a rest and concentrating on the business. “This year there were a lot of good (teaching) jobs available, but I didn’t apply for anything. I thought we had to give this thing a ser-
ious go.” The work has been noticed.
The sign outside Jesse Cooke’s Husky Bus office advertises the full range of services he offers horse and back, offers daily town, goldfields, and Dome tours, visits the Tombstones three times a week, rents bicycles, shuttles

DVD Review with Marianne Darragh
Power Struggles
A vampire, a werewolf and a ghost walk into a bar … the friends contend with vampires more evil than Mitchell, a science laboratory run by religious zealots, malevolent spirits of purgatory, a couple of world-domination plots, and the darkness inside themselves. Also, George gets a girlfriend. In addition to Nina (Sinead Keenan), a number of other characters enter their world for a time, notably Ivan (Paul Rhys) and Daisy (Amy Manson), a vampire couple more playful than lethal - but still lethal. Being Human has a lived-in quality, helped by dialogue that often goes on a tangent, with dramatic conversations taking a detour through deadpan observations on unrelated topics, such as dance steps and television programs, keeping things unpredictable. The writers are well-served by the comic timing of the actors. The series is also visually rich and not just because of its special effects. It’s filmed with an exceptional eye for exterior and interior locations, finding beauty in both the ordinary and eccentric details of the marginal spaces where the characters live .

ampires – is there anything they can’t do? Durable symbols of an underworld that may or may not exist, they show up in the popular culture adept at drama, mystery, romance, horror or comedy. All those theatrical balls are juggled at once in Being Human, which was a popular series in the U.K. from 2009 to 2013. The first three seasons are available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library. Created by Toby Whithouse (Doctor Who), and filmed on location in Bristol and South Wales, Being Human is a “flatshare” comedy (in Brit-speak) combined with elements of horror – a Friends of the weird . The vampire, John Mitchell (Aidan Turner), isn’t the only supernatural character. He lives with a werewolf, George (Russell Tovey) and ghost, Annie (Lenore Critchlow), in Annie’s house where she’s been languishing since her death, unseen until Mitchell and George move in. United in their outsider status, the three share a deep longing to live like the humans they were. Of the trio, George is the closest to that as he only really contends with his otherworldly persona one night a month. But he doesn’t see it that way, and his affliction keeps him paralyzed in the rest of his life. Mitchell’s struggle against his
Being Human is available at the Whitehorse Public Library impulses is presented as a battle with addiction that he’s not always able to conquer. Charismatic and worldly on the surface, Mitchell needs emotional attachments to keep him from surrendering to his demon – or at least try. Annie doesn’t have an inner savage to tame, but she wasn’t ready to die. Mitchell and George save her from the terrible loneliness of being unseen by a world she’s desperate to remain with. Being Human doesn’t spend much time explaining the characteristics of each particular condition, and Annie espeically has confusingly fluid boundaries. Sometimes she can be seen by humans, which allows her to interact with them, until she can’t. George and Mitchell don’t have superhuman strength unless they’re in the grip of their shadow selves; their problems are supersized, but their tools aren’t. Over the first three seasons

Groovin’ the New Year
Local band Soul Migration hosts a dance party at the Yukon Convention Centre on Dec. 31 by Gaby Sgaga
I
f you’re looking for something fun to do this New Year’s Eve in Whitehorse, local band Soul Migration has a plan for you. Members Roxx Hunter and Alex Machidon on lead vocals and guitar, Selina Heyligers-Hare on guitar, keys and vocals, Pam Phillips on bass and vocals, David Sutton on keys and Marc Paradis on drums, love to lay a groove down, and they are planning the party of the year. “I wanted something really fun, a big event with lots of energy, big hair, big lights, and a big stage,” says Roxx Hunter, who came up with the idea. “New Year’s eve was the opportunity for just such
a special occasion.” Hunter says that the thought had been brewing in his mind for a while, but the timing hadn’t worked out until now. This year, he says, he has the perfect band and the timing is right. “Everyone is a good musician and really cool,” says Hunter. The main focus of Soul Migration is to get people up dancing and having a good time. “A band speaks a language,” says Hunter. “It’s all about the groove. It’s great when everyone’s head is bobbing, butts and hips are shaking - it’s awesome!” The theme of this year’s New Year’s party is Mardi Gras. Hunter

says he chose it after he went on the internet and googled for ideas. “There seem to be lots of formal events in Whitehorse lately,” he says. “Mardi Gras sounded like a good thing.” According to Hunter, planning a big party like this takes a lot of stubbornness and mild insanity. He breaks it down into steps. “The first step in planning was to convince the band it’s a good idea. That was an easy sell as they were more than willing to play,” he says, adding it’s convenient when you can hire your own band. The second step was location. Hunter decided to pick the biggest venue in town, the Yukon Convention Centre. And the third step is advertising. Then there are the million and one other little things needed
to throw a fun and festive event, some of which Hunter is still putting into place. “There will be guest musicians, and special events – I’m still working on the details,” he says. Hunter deliberately kept the tickets cheap, at $25 each, so that individuals and couples could dress up and come out to have fun with friends without breaking the bank. The reasonable price and the band’s reputation as a funk/soul/ Motown dance band with a northern theme is already creating a buzz. “I’m blown away by the response,” says Hunter. “People are really stoked.” He hopes that this party will be something everyone will talk about for a long time.
“The main point of this event is to come see a fun band and have a good time,” he says. He promises that Soul Migration will do their best to deliver. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are available online at YukonTickets.com or in person at the Yukon Arts Centre Box Office and Arts Underground. There are special, discounted room rates at the High Country Inn with the purchase of your ticket. Gabriela Sgaga lives off the grid in her West Dawson cabin with her sled dogs. The fast moving Yukon River in downtown Whitehorse is ice free most of the year “The weight of a person is more than a dog,” Blisner says, so people may break through the ice. Also, dogs can “last longer in the cold water than people.” Don’t go out on the ice after the dog, he urges. “Call 911. The Fire Department has the training and equipment,” he says. They’re prepared. Two weeks ago 195 countries signed an international climate agreement. Once ratified, countries commit to limit the rise in global temperatures to “well below” 2 degrees Celsius. With the current increase in average Yukon winter temperatures well above this amount, we should all be prepared for unpredictable ice conditions. As you gather with friends and family this holiday season, share stories about ice, prepare, then get out and enjoy our winter. Ice safety guidelines can be found online at www.LifeSaving. bc.ca. Click on “Be Water Smart,” and then select “Ice Safety.” Katherine Thiesenhausen is a Whitehorse researcher and writer.

life? Perhaps it’s a good or a bad news story, depending on the species. Does a longer open water season mean a longer time for muskrats and beaver to more easily escape predators? For some species, a later freeze-up makes it harder to escape predators. In the winter eagles gather around open water to be able to access fish. Good for the eagles, but not so good for the fish. For people, the effects of climate change on ice mean less predictable ice thickness and flexibility. Ice is flexible, but only to a point. Even experienced Yukoners – in areas they’ve used for years – have gone through the ice. Barry Blisner, Whitehorse Fire Department Platoon Chief and Ice Safety Instructor, cautions people not to take it for granted that the ice is safe, “even if you see someone else’s tracks.” This is because conditions change and temperatures fluctuate. He recommends having someone with you and being prepared. Most reported incidents nowadays involve people trying to rescue their dog that went onto the ice.

ce is important. It allows people and wildlife to use or cross lakes, ponds and rivers. Ice also provides access to what’s below: fish, muskrats and water, for example. Unfortunately, the mild fall temperatures in many parts of Yukon have again delayed ice formation. This isn’t new. Recorded observations of Yukon River freeze-up in Whitehorse going back to the 1890s were analyzed and published by Janowicz in 2010. It showed about a 30-day delay since 1902. Climate change is adding to the effects of the dam. Since 1948 the average Yukon winter temperature has increased 5.4°C, according to the Yukon government’s 2014 State of the Environment Report. Waters outside Whitehorse have also had later freeze-up, earlier break-up and mid-winter thaws. Dawson City folks could still canoe the Klondike River at the beginning of this December. In 2003 Dawson flooded due to a mid-winter thaw. Climate data suggest that this is not just yearto-year variability. What does this mean for wild-

everal months ago I walked into a beauty salon for advice on a skin problem. Kayla Dewdney appeared from the back of the shop. She looked at my skin and offered her advice. It worked! Today I made an appointment with her for a facial, which involved lying down during the treatment. I felt very good during the treatment. I have known Kayla since she was in Grade 3 at Hidden Valley School. Kayla was talented in the arts and I remember her singing for the whole school in Grade 7. She was exceptionally passionate and we were in awe. After graduating in 2009, Kayla stayed in Whitehorse and worked three jobs as a waitress, often for 14 to 17 hours a day. She doesn’t like to be bored, and by the sounds of it she never is - even now. She is proud to say she furthered her education without any student debt. Kayla auditioned for a theatre program at Red Deer College and was one of 26 who were accepted. The program was intense. Kayla lived on campus where she shared a room with two visual arts students. Kayla calls one of the students “the poor girl,” saying she didn’t know how she survived. “She was studying business and had to endure the antics of us, the other three, doing our stuff, practising performances and making collages, right there in the room.” Kayla completed one year of the program, was in several productions and went to New York

Yukon Flickers with Andrew Gilbutowicz
‘Novelty is as Old as the Hills’
Poetic Realism in Les Enfants du Paradise (Children of Paradise)
whatsupyukon.com
ciations with the French painter and costume designer Mayo on this film, helping create the costumes and physical incarnation of the characters. The time it depicts, the characters themselves and the means that were used in its production all form a common bond of how Les Enfants used every last drop of creativity to ensure its originality; this was a film France had to make, no matter how much resistance it encountered. The film’s network of desires and issues of identity reflects France’s past, and its present German occupation. Children of Paradise captures the novelty that stood in the face of war, its masterful technique and artistic scale still endures today, 70 years later. The Yukon Film Society presents a screening of Children of Paradise on Dec. 27 at The Yukon Arts Centre. It will be shown at 7 p.m. and follows a screening of The Sound of Music (Robert Wise, 1965) at 3 p.m.

Barbershop and Hockey Talk by Chase Blodgett
S
he is far more important to me than a friend. She is my trusted, longtime barber at Barber’s II. She has a remarkable ability to make me feel sexy and confident during the most vulnerable times: job interviews, breakups, first dates and gender transitioning. Your everyday life stuff. Tucked in beside the bustling Baked Café on Main Street is Barber’s II, locally owned and operated. Marked by a green canopy and a barber’s pole, it has checker board flooring and red trim accenting black and white walls. Everything about it just feels right. A man needs a good barber. A place where he can go to get a good haircut at a respectable price. Clean lines. People appreciate clean lines. My relationship with my barber is sacred. It took me two and half years in the Yukon to find her. I tried on several stylists and barbers. She was the one who gave me the cut I wanted. I would never cheat on her with another barber – without her permission. I tell her my intimate truths in the 20 minutes I am in her chair and in those 20 minutes I feel as though I am the most important person in the world. Her focus intense, fluctuating between our conversations and my hair. Often we laugh. Particularly at people who stroll by the one-way mirrored window of the shop and check themselves out in it. While they tuck things in, and pull things out and apply things in the mirror they see on their side, we can’t help but laugh on the other side of the window. They have no clue we can see them. I have cheated on her only once. She was too pregnant to cut my hair and I was desperate. She gave me permission to see my back-up barber. Although my relationship with my barber is a sacred one, I still need to have a back-up barber. What if your barber has a family emergency when you need them most? You call in the back-up barber. They’re as important as a back-up goalie in hockey. The key is that the back-up barber should not be related to your barber. Nor should they be best friends. That minimizes the likelihood of both of them being unavailable during the same time span.
In my case my backup barber is the chair next to my barbers. It is perfect, she has watched us fuss, witnessed what I like and heard my life tales. She is perfect to pick up right where I have left off. With the coaching of my barber she nailed my haircut, too. She is good enough to be my barber, but she’s not. Last year I convinced my barber to play hockey. This decision has forever changed the culture of my barbershop visits. As a transman I play in the Whitehorse Women’s Hockey Association. As such, I drafted my barber for my own team. Our relationship was far too sacred to risk anything like being competitive and on opposite teams getting in the way of my haircuts. She has dutifully held space while I bore my soul in 20 minute sessions while cutting my hair for the past four years. That relationship is worth fighting for. The barbershop has taken on a new life. Last week I got a text from one of the girls on our team: “Appointment with Kwok, Wed at 5:00.” Once every month or so you might notice the light on after hours. A group of hockey women and one transman pour onto the checkerboard flooring of the barbershop, talk hockey, get a cut and drink a few beers. Last week I finally had enough beard to get my very first beard trim. The cut and trim was on the house and my barber sent me home with a set of clippers to go along with our game strategy that we worked out. If you don’t have a barber like that you need one. Give mine a call or stop in to see my backup barber. They will fix you up right and make you feel like the most important person in the world. In Midwestern Ohio in the quiet of the evening hours men still gather at the barbershop to discuss the local football program. In the Yukon it’s the women and a transman who have claimed this sacred ground and ritualistically dissect the game they live for. Chase Blodgett is a transman who celebrates and actively supports the blurring of gender lines and roles. He roams the Yukon and is currently rooted in Whitehorse.

The Perfect Party Playlist by Selene Vakharia
W
hether you’re throwing a small dinner party, holiday event or New Year’s eve rager, your playlist can make or break the event. You’ve spent the time and energy on the perfect decorations, food, and outfit – don’t underestimate your playlist. Music sets the tone for a party, creates an ambiance, and can be the deciding factor in the fullness and excitement levels of your dance floor. To help you craft the perfect soundtrack for any get-together, I chatted with mobile DJ Josh De La Salle for his best tips and tricks. Better known as Dancesonic, De La Salle crafts playlists for weddings, events, parties and, most famously, YukomiCon. Know Your Audience “The best party playlist is one that everyone can relate or dance to,” says De La Salle. It’s important to think about
PHOTOS: Courtesy of Dancesonic
Playing the party DJ is all about setting the right mood for your get-together your audience ahead of time so that you have the right mix of songs that will keep people on the dance floor. Choose songs that your audience will know and love
while still keeping it fresh – don’t just play the same songs throughout the night or even from party to party.
TURNED 3 THIS YEAR! I would like to wish our past, present and future customers a
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for your patronage and trust. Liberty Plumbing Mark Lewis 867-332-1370
Different Folks Like Different Guitar Strokes For larger events, you will likely have a mix of ages and tastes. It can be hard to pick music everyone is guaranteed to enjoy. In fact, De La Salle calls it “an impossible task.” But while you can’t please everyone all of the time, you can aim to have something for everyone some of the time. Try and have a combination of classic songs and newer songs to lighten up the night and get everyone whatever their taste on the dance floor. Nail the Transitions “Transitioning your songs throughout the night can possibly make or break your night,” says De La Salle. A mixer can help significantly to keep the flow as you go from
one song to the next. Ten seconds is the magic amount of time for optimal flow. Mix your songs together so that the next song starts 10 seconds before the first song ends. For those who don’t have fancy hardware, players like iTunes come equipped with a crossfade function. De La Salle also recommends trying to keep similar songs together: play dance songs together and slower songs together. “[When you have] another song that’s close to the same [tempo], you can start the next song and the beats will flow together to keep the music going.” This may take some creativity, he warns, as finding the perfect tempo match can be tough. Switch it Up Don’t get stuck playing the same genre all night long. Your guests will appreciate some variation and it will be a great way to show off your musical knowledge. Again, because an event will have a mix of tastes, changing up the playlist will help you cater to all your guests. Unfortunately there is no one formula to get a great playlist every time – trust me, I asked. But stick to these tips and you’ll have the keys to a successful night. What’s Your ‘Delicious’?
W
e were excited to go to The Chocolate Claim. We knew it was popular with the lunchtime crowd, so we opted to meet at 1 p.m. and to bring along two friends to reserve a table. Turned out to be a good move. My companion and I got in line while our friends headed to the tables and chairs by the wall. We stood single file and looked through the glass that fronted the counters to display the delectable choices lined up for selection. There were more options chalked on the board behind the counter, up on the wall - two kinds of soup, sandwiches, paninis, quiche enough variety to satisfy many palates ... and all kinds of coffee, tea and smoothies. While we moved along the counter, single file, I had a chance to take in the surroundings: high ceilings, artsy lights, and huge windows that let in the sunshine. The place was delightful to the senses with vibrant colours, the energetic hubbub, the sensual aroma of coffee, the mouthwatering offerings of sweet treats and the excitement of seeing familiar faces smiling in pleasant surprise. The walls were adorned with works of art that were bright and cheerful and available for viewing and for purchase. There were products displayed on shelves and, here and there, jewelry sparkled beneath the ceiling lights, just waiting to be admired and bought to present to a loved one. The smiling woman behind the counter was a delight. Whatever we wanted ... “Take your time. Sure, you can have that ... With?
Without? No problem!” Even in the midst of the activity and movement, we felt as if
stacked impossibly high between the brown bread. I decided on quiche (heated) and a simple coffee. I just can’t stretch that extra inch into adventure, it seems. The sandwich was to be shared with my companion’s friend, as it was too big for one person. A second beautiful latté and a delicious coffee made it to the table our friends had saved for us. And a huge, sticky cinnamon bun arrived - masquerading as cake. Our table was actually two tables pushed together and was just right, snugged in between other tables of two and four. All around us, people were meeting and connecting and discovering old friends and making new ones. Everywhere I looked, I saw smiles and grins and the beginnings of delighted laughter. It was like being inside of a snow globe that someone would reach over and shake now and again. The atmosphere was one of tranquil energy and excited serenity. The chatter and activity danced around us like music, and we found ourselves smiling in rhythm. Then, I decided to go outside of my comfort zone ... I jumped up to the counter to order lattés and dessert. My new-found friend became a firm friend when I returned to the table with delectable dark-chocolate brownies!

P
erogies have always been a part of my life. Every meal that includes homemade perogies is a special occasion. Learning the best way to make them has been a lifelong process. I am the child of first generation Canadians. My mother’s family emigrated from Finland; my father’s from the Ukraine and Poland. My father, who had never made perogies, gave my mother some verbal instructions on how to make these tender morsels when they first married. She had no idea what a perogy was. Once I moved to the Yukon and started my own family I started searching for ways to keep my children connected to their extended family and culture. I asked my mother to teach me how to make perogies: the ultimate comfort food. We started inviting our friends over to celebrate Ukrainian Christmas with us. Our family would make all the perogies while others were asked to bring one traditional Ukrainian dish to the 12 course meal. The numbers of guests grew as the families grew; it was time to

Making perogies is hard but rewarding work
teach my friends the art of perogy making. I started hosting a pre-Ukrainian Christmas perogy making party. The dough recipe was doubled and then made again and again. With up to eight males and females mixing, rolling, cutting and pinching we finally had enough for the big day. There was a lot of joy the year leftover perogies were raffled off to the lucky winners. We discovered that Yukon wild cranberry sauce goes really well with sour cream and potato cheese perogies. We experimented with other fillings such as sauerkraut, bacon potato or blueberry, but the potato cheese version remained our favourite. I know I have succeeded in my original goal in passing on a family tradition. My son made perogies with his future wife on their first date. Twelve of us later gathered in Kitsilano to make enough for 100 guests for their vegetarian wedding dinner. My daughter decided making perogies would help cure a bout of homesickness while on an extended South American trip. Many of my children’s friends have learned how to make
perogies. I consider making and sharing perogies a community building and family affair. This fall I made perogies with my four siblings and mother in Southern Ontario. My nephew was getting married and we were making dinner together at my sister’s home. It was the first time we had all been together in almost 10 years. Last month we made a pot full for a neighbourhood meet and greet; a first for our subdivision. They even made a temporary appearance at the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival. For me the humble perogy has become an ambassador and holder of tradition, friendship, learning, sharing, laughter and love. I might not be able to remember all the stories that have been told over the years, but I remember my ancestors, I remember my family and I remember my friends. I have been blessed. Remember my Baba’s tip: Never count how many perogies you make because then they’ll fall apart when boiled. Donna Pendziwol-MacMillan is a Whitehorse-based writer.

Gift of Giving by Jason Westover
I
f you’re searching for a little inspiration this holiday season, then perhaps this story is for you. Many of us give to charity and volunteer our time here and there, but for Sarah Ott, it’s a way of life. At only 17 years of age, Sarah has given countless hours back to her community and beyond through a plethora of volunteering, fundraising, determination and hard work, all the while going to school, spending time with family and friends and pursuing her love of the arts. Some folks may find it overwhelming, but Sarah takes it with stride. “I just have to stick to a schedule and everything I choose to do, I do because I love it,” said Ott. Sarah was born in Germany, but moved to the Yukon with her parents in the first few months of her life. She got her first taste of helping others in elementary school with their yearly food drive. Sarah found the whole process of picking the food up and transporting it to the food bank for sorting rather cool. As time went on Sarah became more involved with charity and started volunteering her time in and out of school. It was after her church’s food drive that Sarah began to branch out on her own. “We did stuff the bus, people came out of Superstore and gave food. Because of that I used to go to the food Bank on my own, and I would help fill the bags for the families.” One of Sarah’s passions is singing and she can often be seen performing around town for charity.
It gives her another avenue to give back and peace of mind. “It’s not about you; it’s about the people you’re helping,” Sarah says. “Music is a form of communicating without talking. People who are less fortunate don’t want to talk about why they got to this place, but when you’re singing it’s like talking to them through the songs.” One of her favorite charitable organizations is Whitehorse Connects, which is an anti-poverty coalition that helps the homeless and less fortunate by providing warm clothing, meals and other personal necessities to people who otherwise might not have them. “Everyone gets together and gives basic human rights to people who can’t afford it. It’s one of my favorite places because everyone’s seen as equal. No one has to worry. I help and perform there, they’re grateful that they have live music, grateful they get something they don’t have.” But it doesn’t end there. Sarah takes great pride helping others outside of the territory. For the past two years, she became involved in a seven girl group to bring in the “Because I’m a Girl” campaign, an organization which focuses on ending global gender inequality through promoting the rights of girls and women and ending the cycle of poverty. The group holds a charity concert on Oct. 11 which is International Day of the Girl promoting awareness and goodwill. This holiday season Sarah has been helping The Salvation Army by taking collections. For the new year Sarah’s goal is

“I like volunteering, like when you sing, you think it’s stressful, but when you help a charity it’s giving back to the community and it’s not about myself, it’s about who I’m helping and not a monetary reward, it’s a reward that’s someone’s life will benefit.” For more information about the Because I’m a Girl campaign

A Little Off the Top with Ken Bolton
Go ahead, say “Merry Christmas” A couple of weeks ago, my 17-year-old neighbour hailed me from across the street, “Hey, Ken. Happy Hanukkah!” After a moment of stunned surprise, I replied, “And to you!” The thing is, I don’t happen to be Jewish. Neither is my chipper young friend, whose name is Ali. He and his family come from a Muslim background, and proudly refer to their country of origin as Persia. But his cheery greeting brightened an otherwise mediocre day and made me feel like passing on a bit of warmth to others. For several years now, there has been a lot of blather back and forth about whether or not
the familiar “Merry Christmas” should give way to some safe, sanitized, politically-correct alternative greeting such as “Happy Holidays”. The arguments get particularly intense when public spaces are involved. Is it OK to call it a Christmas tree, or should it be deemed a Seasonal Arboreal Emblem? In a country that pays at least lip service to the notion of separating church from state, should any overt religious symbols be permitted in publicly-funded schools, hospitals, legislatures, or municipal buildings? Is it acceptable to allow some, but not others? Who gets to decide, and how?

There is ample evidence in Canada and elsewhere of how corrosive that debate can become. It may be a copout, but as someone who doesn’t harbour strong religious beliefs of any kind, I’m willing to let wiser heads decide where to draw the line between cultural imperialism and appropriate cultural accommodation. The bottom line is that I’m on the squishy-liberal side that says, “Let’s celebrate anything that expands the world’s supply of joy.” Fact is, despite some specific religious or cultural differences, there’s a remarkable similarity in how folks celebrate life, especially during the darkest days of the year. They do it by sharing special meals, singing traditional songs, telling traditional stories, offering special prayers, and exchanging gifts and greetings. From the Hindu Festival of Lights to the fireworks of Chinese New Year, the symbolic use of candles, torches and bonfires has been a common way to assert our human desire to cut through the
At the everyday level, the various cultures that make up the Yukon’s mosaic largely go about celebrating their various special holidays as they choose, and some have made wonderful overtures to welcome others to share their observances. Yet, there often seems to be a lingering hesitancy to acknowledge someone else’s time of celebration verbally. It’s saddening that anyone might take offence when someone sincerely says “Happy Diwali”, “Eid Mubarak”, “Happy Hanukkah”, “Happy Kwanza”, “Have a Cool Yule, Dude”, “Kung Hei Fat Choi”, or even “Merry Christmas”. Such an expression, cheerfully offered at the appropriate time, is not a command. It is a PHOTO: kozzi.com greeting, a wish, a blessing, a gift, a mitzvah. From the Back Country with Jozien Keijzer
Mendenhall Meadows
T
alking to my friend Mary Whitley, a fellow explorer, we started discussing how many trails we had found this summer that we did not even know existed. She was finding them on her side of town around Mount Lorne, and I was finding them on mine around the Mendenhall Subdivision. So, on one of those balmy 9ºC plus-days in October, I came to her side of town to explore the area around Mount Lorne. She had seen a possible trail from the air, but had not been able to locate the start of it. A forest is so much bigger than an open field of the same size. A forest contains all sorts of secrets that one would see instantly in an open field. In a forest, it is not always even something that is visible

Things the Forest Hides from the air; such are secret trails. After much explaining and consulting maps, we decided to approach the mountain from the Robinson Subdivision. As we drive towards it from Whitehorse, it seems sensible to check out some of the roads going east from the south Klondike Highway, to see where and how far they lead towards the mountain (Mount Lorne). The foothills from the mountain come closer to the highway farther north. We drive into the CCC Road, wondering if it was actually a road built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Anyway, thinking it will soon come to an end, the road goes higher and becomes narrower. After almost 5 km, we get out and decide, being so far in, we might as well hike from here. There are several bush roads. cont’d on page 27...

Things the Forest Hides... cont’d
Mendenhall River
An October Mourning Cloak butterfly We choose the one going up and west towards our mountain. The road we follow becomes an old creek bed with giant stumps from trees cut long ago. Suddenly, no trail in sight, we are in a big camp where they left us two beers, the cans faded. From the camp, we follow the creek bed higher and

get on its south – now high-bank – side. And this is what it is about, this love of surprise trails. We find ourselves on a narrow, perfect path created by nature, used more by animals than people. There are steep slopes on either side. It doesn’t really matter that
we never find the path we were originally looking for. Still some navigating and bushwhacking through buckbrush is necessary to bring us to a higher ridge. We cross a gully where there is even more traffic in the form of moose and caribou signs. And the forest gifts us the big-
Winter snowshoe hare trying to hide in the October forest gest fir tree we have ever seen in the Yukon. We have our lunch at a 360 degree view point, the city behind us. We face Mount Lorne from our high vantage point. Being above the trees, some of its secrets are calling to us. Yet, there is still no sign of the trail we came out to find.
On the way back, bushwhacking easier, as gravity is on our side, the found-trails sometimes elude us, the beer tastes okay. Thank you, forest, and all your hidden secrets. Jozien Keijzer is a visual artist, writer and avid hiker who lives in the Mendenhall Subdivision.

Breaking Trail in the North by Kirsten Scott
L
ast Friday morning we headed to the riverbank to meet a few locals, to mark a trail across the ice to the other shore. The goal was to choose the least-worst trail because, although rough areas can be avoided on foot, those on snowmobiles need a smoother route. The previous day we had looked down at the river from a vantage point to the south and had seen a smooth stretch of ice in about the right place for a trail. Finding it, while on the river, was another matter … We stumbled around in the jumbled ice for several minutes until our fearless leader, The Frenchman, hit the jackpot. From here, it was smooth sailing, or stepping, and we soon gained the east shore. Once there, we stood looking at one another, a bit bemused to be on the other side. The Frenchman’s young colleague voiced what we were thinking, “This feels weird!” We collected some willows and set out, back across, drilling holes in the ice to test the thickness, and marking the path with sticks and flagging tape. Soon we encountered another west-sider , armed with a bundler of more

A West Dawsonite heads to town on the newly broken trail across the Yukon River on day 24 of freeze-up official-looking marker posts. We worked back and forth, jamming markers into the snow and straightening the path. A couple of men came over from the Dawson City side and, armed with axes, they went to help clear the lumpy frozen slush near the west shore. Standing in the middle of the river, I heard axe blows reverberating off the hillside with dull kerthwaks, each out of sync with the visible motion. This added to the odd, displaced feeling of knowing I was
standing over thousands of litres of water in a place where just six months ago I had been in a boat. The sun came out, the southerly breeze died down and it was pleasantly warm, only -20 C. Our first ‘customer’ appeared, a tall fellow, strolling easily along the new route. “This is great,” he said, passing me and heading off to the city side. Everyone commented on how easy it was this time. I heard mention of years when the trail snaked through tall pillars of jumble ice, which had to be hacked apart to
make room for snowmachines. As people start driving their snowmobiles on the path, it will pack down and level out. Eventually a truck or two will cross, and, until the Highways Department builds a proper ice bridge at the ferry landing, this trail will serve to connect West Dawson to its eastern neighbours. A few days later we availed ourselves of the trail and headed to town for the luxury of showers and laundry. I ran home from the laundromat - along the dyke beside the river, then over the new
trail, and finally up the long hill. I had to laugh on my way over the river because signs of use already included a dog poo in the middle of the trail! West Dawson is indeed reconnected to the world! Kirsten Scott is an environmental scientist who shares her free time between outdoor activities like hiking, attempted gardening and splitting wood, and the more tranquil pursuits of writing and photography.

WHITEHORSE 3:00 pm Sound of Music
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, The Sound of Music is a 1965 American musical drama about a young Austrian woman (Julie Andrews) studying to become a nun in Salzburg in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower (Christopher Plummer) to be governess to his seven children. After bringing love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith. Dir. Robert Wise, 1965, France, 174 min.
7:00 pm Children of Paradise
Poetic realism reached sublime heights with Les Enfants du Paradise, widely considered one of the greatest French films of all time. This nimble depiction of nineteenth-century Paris’s theatrical demimonde, filmed during World War II, follows a mysterious woman loved by four different men: an actor, a criminal, a count, and, most poignantly, a mime. Thanks to a major new restoration, this iconic classic looks and sounds richer and more detailed than ever. In French with English subtitles. Dir. Marcel Carné, 1945, France, 190 min. “Marcel Carné‘s towering intimate epic of early 19th-century love and the lives of performers, often heralded as the greatest French film of all time.” – Village Voice Tix: yukontickets.com

A Very Literate Year
Part One
Recommended classics, by month, for 2016 PHOTO: kozzi.com
The holiday season can create high expectations. Go easy on yourself.
at Christmas It's never too late to build holiday traditions based on kindness and gratitude. Remember that giving our time, gratitude and love is priceless!
• Simplify – you don’t have to go all-out on food, decorations, gifts and parties. • Keep focused on what matters most – time spent with family and friends. • Do small acts of kindness as gifts for neighbours, friends or strangers (shovel a walk, plug a parking meter or buy a coffee for the person behind you in line). • Make a point of appreciating the good in your life. • Eat and drink in moderation, be
January:
The Master and Margarita
by Mikhail Bulgakov (Russian, 1967) January is the perfect time to read this sprawling masterpiece. First written in the 1930s, Bulgakov was unable to publish the work in its entirety until the late sixties due to the extreme censorship laws of Soviet Russia; even then, it had to published outside of the country. The work features talking cats, black magic, corrupt officials being turned into flying pigs, failed writers, the devil throwing a party, a hypochondriac Pontius Pilate and a love so eternal even time and death cannot destroy it. Simultaneously satirical and sensual, readers who have the patience to work through the labyrinthian plot will be richly rewarded.
physically active and get lots of sleep.

Richard’s Tire Tips
How do I know when to get NEW TIRES? Every new tire comes with special humps in between the tread blocks known as the wear bars, these bars are used to indicate to the user that the tire has reached 2/32’s of an inch. 2/32’s is considered to be at the end of the tire’s useful life and can no longer safely grip the road, especially in rainy conditions where you will find the tire to likely experience a hydroplane condition. Therefore if your tires have reached these wear bars your tires are no longer safe to operate and are in need of replacement.

March:
April:
by James Salter (American, 1967)
A Sport and a Pastime
Lushly plotted and elegantly written, Salter’s best-known novel is by turns erotically charged and desperately despairing. On one hand the novel is an unflinching look at love and its philosophical and physical role in our lives and on the other a careful examination of the failed prospects and disappointments of a thwarted, waning youth. A Sport and a Pastime is a worthy read whether you’re falling in love, falling out of love or wondering why the hell you can’t find a decent date in this town.
Beauty and Sadness
Tropic of Cancer
by Yasunari Kawabata (Japanese, 1964)
by Henry Miller (American/French, 1934)
Simultaneously shocking in its sexual frankness and richly decorated with the minute details of post-war Japanese life, this novel by the Nobel Prize winning Yasunari Kawabata is the perfect accompaniment to those gradually lengthening late-winter days. Known for his sparse yet elegant style, Kawabata masterfully portrays the raw complexities of the human soul: love, jealousy, loss, nostalgia, longing, sexual desire, madness and, above all, the deep desire for that which we cannot have. This compelling, dark novel of an increasingly tangled love-triangle is as beautiful as it is anxiety-inducing.
Almost unbearably graphic and gritty, this is Miller’s best known novel of his years spent drinking, fornicating and writing in Paris as an American expat. Set during the late twenties and early thirties, the characters live in abject squalor, all struggling to either get laid, get paid, or both. At once misogynistic and achingly tender, the novel is so surrealistically real that you’ll hate yourself for loving it.
May:
On the Road
by Jack Kerouac (American, 1957) If, like me, you get more than a bit of Wanderlust each May, then this book is for you. Long considered the defining novel of the Beat generation, Kerouac, writing under the guise of the character Sal Paradise, busts all across America in broken down car after broken down car with his friends. Featuring a healthy dose of sex, drugs, jazz and liquor, as well as Kerouac’s trademark capacity for detail and observation, it’s an unbeatable classic of American literature that anyone with even the slightest trace of the adventurous spirit should read at least once in their lives.
June:
Animal Farm
by George Orwell (British, 1945) Dark satire about one of the most hopeful and ultimately oppressive revolutions in history, Animal Farm cuts deep into the heart of Soviet communism while simultaneously exposing disturbing parallels to our own fragmenting culture. Plus, at a slim XX pages, the book fits right into your pocket and can easily be read, say, in an afternoon of drifting around in a canoe while you troll for lake trout.

Hostel Hostility
Part 2
You can never look back by Ben Mahony
B
efore coming to Nicaragua’s beach mecca of San Juan del Sur, I had undergone a hostel scare in Granada - a polite-seeming colonial city with awe-inspiring architecture, nouveau cuisine and two sports bars. I had returned from dinner and was enjoying a rare private moment in my empty eight-person hostel room. Before long, an athletic gentle giant from Calgary and his diminutive surfer girlfriend walked in, nodded to me, then flipped out. “Everything’s gone!” Total meltdown, and for good reason. Their locker had been broken into. Gone were $500 cash, a cell phone and a VISA card. Three feet away, my locker remained untouched. I listened as they made frantic calls to Canada on the one phone they had left. Perhaps some tribal Canuck kinship helped, but I felt myself under at least a little suspicion. Did I see anyone? When did I get there? A staff guy came in to investigate - someone I didn’t like or trust, for no apparent reason other than he was tall and incessantly hitting on all the girls. “We’re going to search everyone in the hostel until we find those things,” he announced with moral outrage. An awkward search ensued. I offered up all my things and opened my empty locker. I was in the habit of carrying all my valuables with me, which bore risks but offered the immediate comfort of feeling my card or passport on my person whenever I got worried. After a brief search, the staffer fingered a hosteller who had signed in around 4:00 p.m., but left around 7:00. Businesses in Nicaragua tend to run on a pen and paper notebook system. This thief had found the book, crossed out his name and U.S. passport number and fled. So we had our man. A complicated ordeal followed as the young couple tried to get a police report so they could file an insurance claim. The police
arrived in about an hour and scanned the hostel, but didn’t conduct much of a search. When they quickly made for the exit, the couple who had been burgled panicked. Their Spanish, like mine, was poor. Total confusion and raised voices. A posse followed the police to the station, where they refused to supply a report until their supervisor returned the next day. In the morning, I removed myself from this atmosphere of controversy, crime and slight suspicion and bolted for the beach at San Juan del Sur. I had little interest in another legal brush, but within a few hours I found myself enmeshed in a fresh scene of theft, prostitution and criminal skinny-dipping. (See Hostel Hostility, Part 1, December 3.) After my hostel mates Olivier and Sebastien had spent their first night in jail, Kathy said they would be released the next day. But that didn’t happen. At the jail, she couldn’t clear the language barrier, or perhaps the financial barrier. The guards recommended a lawyer near the hostel, whose rate was $500. Kathy only had $200 dollars and Larry was still awaiting his replacement bank card, so they returned to the jail to ask Olivier for the password for his bank card, which was tucked in his locker. After opening the locker with a screwdriver, they secured the funds from Oliver’s bank account to pay the lawyer. One can only assume the lawyer paid whatever portion of the $500 dollars it took to mollify the guards. I was told the boys would be out of lockup around 3:00 p.m. on the third day. After having lunch and a beer to take the sting out of my Saint Patrick’s day hangover, I went back to the hostel for what I hoped would be a dramatic reunion and debrief.
PHOTO: wikipediacommons.com The boys were there, but no one was speaking much. Olivier was in the shower. Sebastian was sitting with Kathy who I could only assume went through this protracted effort because she had a crush on the buff Mexican. I shook Sebastian’s hand. He nodded and I left the room where Kathy was consoling him. Larry was unimpressed and said it was all Sebastian’s fault, and that his benefactor, Olivier, was capable of no such wrongdoing. As an added wrinkle, Sebastian’s iPod was missing. “We don t think it was you,” he assured me. “We think it s the guy who comes in to change the sheets every day.” Another episode of slight suspicion but no accusation. I retreated to the local sports bar to get up to speed on the NCAA basketball tournament. About 7:00 p.m. Sebastian and Kathy walked by. I waved them over and got a grim update on what had happened. Sebastien and Olivier had been imprisoned in a small room and given a small bowl of water and a little water each day. They had stripped of their clothes nightly and mocked by the guards, who took pictures with cell phones. He said he was going to pursue the case and make sure the guards were punished. I questioned his logic but wished him luck. As a young activist, I had published articles about police treatment of First Nations, but I
THANK YOU for supporting our Yukon business and for supporting our AVEDA gift giving program. We are so pleased to have been given the opportunity to pamper you all year long. Watch for some exciting announcements in January! 2016 will be an amazing year!
Merry Christmas Happy New Year
The “polite-seeming colonial city” of Granada, Nicaragua provided a backdrop for the author’s first brush with hostel crime wasn’t about to rumble with the Nicaraguan police. I also had a sneaking suspicion that Sebastian had inflamed the police response. That’s essentially where my story ends. The next morning, the others were still sleeping when I wished Sebastien well as I left. As I walked down to my bus, I considered doubling back to get his email address to follow up on his story. But as Don Henley said in ‘The Boys of Summer’, “a little voice inside my head said don’t look back; you can never look back.” I didn’t. Ben Mahony is a Whitehorse musician who went south last winter to escape the cold. This is the second of two parts about his experience in Nicaraguan hostels.

AND THE GRINCH,
with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ‘till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.

Chet doing his best “Grouse Dance” with the Selkirk Spirit Dancers at the Little Salmon/Carmacks Annual General Assembly.
he Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation met Chet (the Northern Tutchone name affectionately gifted to Doug Urquhart by Northern Tutchone Elders – pronounced ‘Chut’) when he worked with Selkirk First Nation and then LS/CFN for 13 years of our Elders Doòli Dän K’i work (Governing Ourselves Using Our Traditional Cultural Knowledge). During that time, for more than ten years, Chet also helped the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation government transition from the Indian Act Band mentality of ‘community meetings’ to conducting high level government business through direct democracy while honouring our culture during our Annual General Assemblies. He was unorthodox in his thinking and mannerisms and the best facilitator that we have ever had the opportunity to experience. Chet quickly earned the respect and admiration of our Elders and many Northern Tutchone Citizens of Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation, Selkirk First Nation and the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun. het identified with the way of life of Northern Tutchone people. He took our Elders vision of true traditionally based self-government and transformed it into living, breathing documents which he captured through cartoons and writing. He had the incredible ability to give hope, inspire and uplift First Nations people and to give us a voice that reflected what our Elders and communities wanted to say. He produced documents with drawings of our people, their struggles and life journeys from before first contact to present day that are radically different from any conventional government documents. ur traditional Doòli laws had gone underground through the acculturation of our people, but they were never forgotten. Chet was instrumental in drawing out much of this fundamental information and getting it to the forefront of our agendas through his fun loving style, hours of storytelling and lively discussion. Now these guiding laws which sustained our people for thousands of years are discussed openly and will again form the basis of who we are as Northern Tutchone people. het made a profound impact that will live on in many of our lives... he was one of a kind and is remembered affectionately with much honour and respect. His work on our behalf has created a legacy that will make sure that the stories and culture of our ancestors from thousands of years of successfully living here, will be available for our future generations and our First Nation governments to find our own way forward. he Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation, Selkirk First Nation and the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun along with our Elders would like to thank Chet (Doug) Urquhart and his family for the years of service he gave to our communities, helping our Elders recover our traditions and stories for the benefit of our future generations. Chet, we owe you more than can be expressed in words.
