his Friday and Saturday the Northern Lights School of Dance will be performing their annual run of the classic holiday ballet, The Nutcracker..

The annual show functions as the school’s annual ballet recital.

This year over 50 students will be participating, ranging from children of just four years of age to adults.

“Pretty much anyone can be involved in The Nutcracker,” says Northern Light’s Artistic Director, Christina Buckle. “Aside from dancers, we also have awesome volunteers, so there is a lot of behind-the-scenes participation too.”

Buckle has been heading the show since 2012, when she came to the school.The biggest chal-

lenge of putting the show together each year is casting, Buckle says.

“You can’t make everyone Clara or the Sugar Plum Fairy.”

The Northern Lights School of Dance has been doing the Nutcracker for 12 years, says teacher Rebecca Reynolds.

“We do it every year because it’s a Christmas classic. People love it,” says Buckle. “The music is fantastic and it just gets you in the mood (for the Holidays).

In order to keep the show fresh, small changes are made each year, she says.

“We always have new choreography and new costumes,” she says. “I look forward to it every year, we always have a new cast and you find ways to feature their amazing talents.”

The best part about the show for her, she says, is that, “there comes a time in rehearsal where the kids don’t need you anymore… they can do it on their own and the show becomes theirs. You just have to trust them and let them having this amazing experience.

The show is being held at the Yukon Arts Centre Dec.11th and 12th at 7 pm, with an additional 1 pm showing on Saturday. Tickets are available at the YAC box office or at Arts Underground.

Eventually city administration and the White Pass decided the squatters had to be removed. In the late 1950’s the 30-year process of dispersing the eclectic community began.

White Pass was forced to relinquish lots they owned and once that was done people were able to buy property in other parts of downtown.

In some circumstances federal assistance was provided to move squatter homes to Porter Creek.

The White Pass then donated its land so that the S.S. Klondike could be permanently displayed.

And while most of the squatter community was gone by the 1980s one property did remain right up until 2003, at what is known today as Shipyards PHOTO: Rick Massie Park.

Ramshackle cabins and tiny derelict homes made up the downtown waterfront replacing today’s S.S. Klondike and Rotary Peace Park.

The downtown riverside areas went by names like Whiskey Flats and Moccasin Flats and a third of the city’s population called it home.

For Ellis, like many Canadians, it was the booming northern economy that drew her north to the territory.

After Whitehorse became the territory’s capital in 1953 more and more people arrived in the city to work for the higher wages.

Ellis likens the time to a mini Klondike stampede.

“After the war, across the country it was hard for young people to get ahead so people came north,” said Ellis. “The economy was good, it was booming and so was the private sector.”

With minimal housing available to meet the sudden need people began to set up homes on the waterfront, squatting on land owned by the White Pass railroad, which, at the time was the largest company in town.

At its peak 310 homes and more than 900 people would make up the waterfront.

Upon arrival Ellis was immediately drawn to the community and for five months she, too, would call it home.

“People were very nice, so trusting and somewhat naïve,”

It chronicles the history of the squatter community from the 1950s through to the 1980s with a number of former residents contributing their own personal stories, photographs and memories of the area.

he Dawson Food Bank and the Dawson Women’s Shelter are busy organizing their annual Holiday Hamper Program and Food Drive. It’s designed to assist individuals and families in the community who might need a little boost to get them through the Christmas season.

Donations of non-perishable food items can be dropped off at either the General Store, Bonanza Market or the Robert Service School, where bins have been set aside to collect donations.

Donations of toys can be dropped off at the CIBC branch on 2nd Avenue.

Volunteers will gather at the Dawson Community Chapel on 5th Avenue on December 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to sort the goods for Holiday Hamper delivery.

This is one of the ways in which Dawsonites look after each other.

For the last three years the bulk of the food bank program has been handled from the Community Chapel, after operating out of the Women’s Shelter for decades.

Over time, the shelter became uncomfortable with offering the service to both men and women and the church stepped up to take it over.

The busiest time of year for the service is in the summer, when there are many transients passing through, as well as people looking for work. Food bank volunteers John Lodder and Chad Schellenberg say 50 people would not have been an unusual day last summer, which was a busier summer than normal.

The clientele varies with the season. Once the summer folks have moved on the faces are more likely to be locals who need a bit of help.

This particular day in November they saw about 30 people, which was unusual, as 10 to 15 had been the norm for several weeks prior.

The service is provided only on Tuesday afternoons from noon to 3 o’clock. Food is provided for

Love, Ambivalently

The unexpected Christmas classic Love Actually is on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library

M

any beloved Christmas films had inauspicious debuts. It’s a Wonderful Life lost money for the studio when it was released in 1946, but television viewings turned it into a bona fide classic 30 years after its release.

Similarly, Love Actually has unexpectedly become a Christmas staple in some quarters. Admittedly, I belong in that group, even though a good portion of the film makes me cringe, another part really bugs me and some scenes I can’t watch at all. It’s another seasonal conundrum, available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library.

Written and directed by Richard Curtis and inspired in its form by Curtis’ appreciation for the structure of multiple storylines in Nashville (Robert Altman’s 1975 film), Love Actually follows a host of characters around Europe (mostly London) in different states of holiday cheer and gloom as Christmas approaches.

Curtis wrote the Blackadder series (with Ben Elton) and Four Weddings and a Funeral; his characteristic style is a blend of comedy with sentimentality.

Thanks to the episodic structure of Love Actually, if you don’t care for one storyline, another one will be along shortly.

Among the nine threads, there’s an aging rock star, Billy Mack (Bill Nighy), promoting a Christmas single with the support of his manager Joe (Gregor Fisher). A married couple, Harry and Karen (Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman) are perhaps a little too

comfortable with each other.

Karen’s recently widowed friend Daniel (Liam Neeson) is struggling to connect with his inscrutable 11-year-old stepson, Sam (Thomas Brodie-Sangster, who played mystical Jojen Reed in Game of Thrones).

Harry’s office mate, Sarah (Laura Linney), finally gets close to the crush she’s been mutely enthralled with for years.

So what’s not to like?

That depends: Love Actually might be a sort of Rorschach test for viewers.

Characters and scenes that I can’t stand are other people’s favourites and the opposite may also be true. But it’s hard to see how anyone can’t find Daniel and Sam irresistible or the brutally candid Billy Mack brilliantly funny.

Then there’s the youthful, progressive prime minister, David (Hugh Grant), who might seem less far-fetched this year, in the afterglow of the recent election, than he has before. He embodies a peculiarly English fantasy of the dreamboat prime minister who puts the thuggish American president (Billy Bob Thornton) in his place and falls for the self-deprecating, charmingly clumsy Natalie

Still, those people do exist and you might be one of them.

On its tenth anniversary, the online culture magazine Vulture asked whether Love Actually was a Christmas classic. In the discussions that followed, it was revealed that it’s one of the few romantic comedies that men like to watch – or at least, more men than usual for the genre.

The question also spawned passionate critiques of the film’s merits or lack of merits, that add layers of meaning to the guilty pleasure of succumbing to Curtis’ crafty charm. This year I might just capitulate entirely.

If you’re overly focused on one security, one asset class or even one mutual fund you’re not properly diversified.If you have a small number of holdings, a downturn in one or all of those investments could have a serious negative impact on your portfolio. A well-diversified portfolio spreads your risk over many more investments, which lessens the impact of downturns on your overall portfolio. A diversified portfolio typically has assets whose performance will vary over time with one or more investment performing below the others.

To what degree you diversify however, will depend on factors such as financial goals, your time horizon and tolerance for risk.

To determine whether you’re on the right track, take a close look at your portfolio-including investments inside and outside a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). Are you invested in all the major asset groups? Does any one asset class or individual security account for a substantial portion of your holdings?

Don’t assume that because you were well-diversified a year ago, you are today. Changing asset prices can alter your mix-for example, if one investment has appreciated significantly, it might represent too much of your portfolio. It’s time to rebalance.

Keep in mind that your diversification strategy should change as you move through life. Here are some general guidelines: When you’re young: This is a good time for a large proportion of growth investments, principally stocks. With a long investment horizon you can make the most of the higher potential returns growth investments offer. And if your portfolio stumbles, you have time to recover.

As you grow older: In your peak earnings years, when you have more income to invest, you should still focus on growth.

But start shifting toward preserving capital through an increased proportion of income investments and other conservative assets.

You need to protect some of your wealth for retirement income.

When retirement approaches: This is the time to really concentrate on preserving wealth. The same strategy applies in retirement. But keep a growth element in your mix to help offset inflation.

What I really dislike is paying for pizza. In fact, I have no idea why any (sober) person pays for pizza. It’s much cheaper and healthier to make yourself, and really doesn’t take much time to make.

The most time consuming part

is letting the dough rise, which is done all by itself thanks to Saccharomyces cerevisiae, also known as bread yeast. The rise time of a little more than an hour is a great excuse to sit down and have a beer, which is frankly what you’d be doing while you waited for pizza someone else made to

Make this for a first date. Seriously. Cooking is sexy.

• In a large bowl, mix 1 cup of water, the honey and the yeast. Stir vigorously to dissolve the yeast with a stiff spatula.

• Add in the flour, then the salt, spices and olive oil. Do not add the salt directly to the liquid before you add the flour, because the salt may kill the yeast. Add the remaining water.

• Mix by taking the spatula and scraping it along the inside of the bowl, folding the ingredients in on themselves. Don’t mix it all up like a cake - you’ll be breaking the gluten** strands, which are what make the dough stretchy and rollable.

• When everything is incorporated, lightly flour your hands and knead the dough. Gather it into a ball, cup the dough in both hands, push down on the ball while pressing forward, and reform it into a ball.

Repeat until the dough is smooth and elastic, but not tough, about four minutes. If it seems dry or hard, add a little more water to loosen to up.

• Oil the bowl, roll the dough in it, and cover the dough with another bowl or wet tea towel. Leave it to rise for an hour, or until nearly doubled in size, at room temperature.*** Go have that beer.

• Once the dough it properly risen, cut it into two equal pieces with a bread knife. Roll into balls, oil and cover again for 15 minutes.

• Preheat the oven to 425ºF degrees.

• On a lightly floured surface, roll the two dough balls out with a rolling pin into two round or oblong shapes, as thick or thin as your like. Place on a parchment paper-lined baking tray or pizza stone.

Lightly brush the surface with olive oil.

• Top with whatever you have on hand; shredded cheese, salami, left over veggies, tomato sauce, crushed garlic, olives, etc. How should I know what you like on your pizza? Put it on there!

• Bake for 15 minutes for thin crust, 20 minutes for thick. Eat hot and crispy fresh out of oven.

he Christmas season is upon us. For cigar lovers, this is a perfect excuse to indulge and order up a nice selections of stogies. For those who live in Whitehorse, there happens to be a store where you can get the best cigars Cuba has to offer.

In the heart of downtown on Main Street is Midnight Sun Emporium. The shop is popular with tourists and locals alike, but nestled behind a display counter is a cabinet humidor with a vast selection of Cuban cigars.

It’s really neat to see this display. It’s not often that you come across a place that specializes only in Cuban cigars. Some of you may wonder what’s the difference between a Cuban and a non-Cuban. Let me enlighten you.

No one knows the specific point in time when cigar smoking began.

We do know the native Americans were fond of it, and somewhere along the lines, Cuba began to grow tobacco. They grew it for hundreds of years, and became very good at it. It is even said that the tobacco grown in Cuba is the very best.

According to popular opinion, Cuba has the best climate and soil for tobacco, and since the industry is regulated by the government, a lot of care goes into the production. Now, this is not to say that cigars produced in other countries are not good. You can find optimum cigars in any tobacco producing country. However, Cuba does have a special place in the cigar world. Personally, I have never come across a Cuban that I did not like.

Let’s also not forget, Cuba is the home of the popular luxury brand of cigars called Cohibas.

This line was first created as a personal cigar for former Cuban President Fidel Castro. It didn’t take long for these cigars to be sold to the public due to the superior quality. However, Cohiba is not the only star in the Cuban cigar world. Ramone Allones has a selection of special edition cigars

Ramone Allones is made in the Partagas factory, but takes on a unique taste of its own. I had the pleasure of having one once, I could not find a flaw if I tried.

It is a strong smoke, lots of spice, cedar, and licorice. The construction was beautiful, and the smoke had a pleasing aroma. For Whitehorse residents you happen to be in luck. Midnight Sun Emporium is currently carrying Ramone Allones Special Edition at $70 per stick.

I can assure you, it is well worth the price and this cigar will definitely make a lasting impression on the recipient.

With Ramone Allones aside, there are the popular Romeo y Julietta and Montecristo brands, which are staple products in the

Cuban cigar industry. Both of these cigar houses have a strong reputation, and you can find a wide selection at Midnight Sun with a price range of $7 to $70 per cigar.

Some other popular brands Midnight Sun carries are Guantanamera Cristales, la Flor de Cano Selectos, and Jose El Piedra Brevas. These stogies range from $11 to $20 each.

Again, I’m not saying Cuban cigars are the absolute best compared to non-Cubans, but what I can say is that any cigar lover would be happy to receive one.

I

ran away from Toronto like a rabbit from a wolf. Moving to the country’s largest city from my smaller Ontario hometown had been like poking my head above ground and entering the wide and open field. It only took two years of exposure and uncertainty before I gathered my courage to bolt – across the country, in an old camper, to the Yukon.

Here I found many places to hide. The midnight sun was not the spotlight of the streetlamp at 3 a.m. outside the Toronto bar, nor was it the searchlight of the attractive stranger’s face. Yukon summer was a blanket that concealed all desires save the drive to be outside, awake, alive.

I made my home everywhere.

I could drive down a road off the highway and find a small patch of forest to call my own, where no one else could see me. I made new friends, but I didn’t spend a lot of time with them. With the endless wilderness as my playmate, I stopped feeling like I needed so much from other people.

Soon daylight began its retreat from winter’s quiet advance, and I retreated from my camper to the warmth of a little cabin outside of town. As the cold sealed me in, I made a home in darkness. Nothing shone on me but the January moon. And I came to know the shapes my shadows take.

Three seasons later I find myself on the cusp of another Yukon winter with a heart heaving to leave hibernation. I miss my family. I miss my friends. I miss Toronto. I decide to return to Ontario for the winter.

In the weeks before my departure I begin to feel the hot breath of the city on my neck. I worry what will happen when I return to the open field I never knew the ends of. A place I left like a stage in the middle of a play.

One night I have a dream: I’m lost inside a giant mall, unable to find my way out. When I finally push my way through a door to the hustle of a Toronto street outside, I turn to see the sun kissing the tips of the waves of the endless

Lake Ontario. Ah, I think, filling with peace and confidence. Here I am.

The anxiety around my return resurfaces when I finally take a weekend away from my parents and head into The Big City. But as Toronto’s limits near, Lake Ontario rises into view. I get off the highway as soon as I can, driving along the lakeshore as I enter the heart of the city. On a whim, I pull into a parking lot, open the door for my dog, and run to meet the water where it licks the sand of the beach.

I look out. Lake Ontario spreads itself before me, stretching to meet the cloudless horizon. Every inch of its surface is exposed, naked to the unblinking gaze of the sun. And it shines. It is brilliant.

I fill with peace and confidence.

e decided, my companion and I, to go for lunch at Bean North.

That far?

Why not.

It was an incredibly beautiful winter’s day; the sky was clear and blue, sun glistened off the sparkling white snow, the chill factor of the day stuck winter’s flakes firmly to the dark, green pine branches.

It was a scene straight out of a Christmas card.

The ride from town was only 20 minutes and I was almost disappointed when we turned off the Takhini Road and its backdrop of pristine, snow-clad mountains, onto the driveway for Bean North Coffee Roasting Co. Café.

But not for long.

The little green house that served as our destination was nestled between northern trees and snowbanks, with a newly shoveled parking lot waiting just for us.

We made our way past the colourful Little Free Library tacked to the trees, past the area outdoor bulletin board and up onto the wooden deck to enter the small building. Inside we found wooden floors, shelves of coffee and delightful local art everywhere. An amiable woman behind the counter smiling broadly at us.

She left us to read the extensive menu and try to choose from the many options – of coffee, that is. And tea.

I finally settled on a caffe breve, which is a mixture of es-

The food menu was considerably shorter, a number of tempting and mouth-watering sandwich combinations, as well as the soup of the day and various bars and cookies. Choices easily accommodating to vegan, gluten free and dairy free diets.

I chose the Indian curry chicken and quinoa and apple soup with a scone. My friend chose the cheese bomb panini.

We took our huge 12 ounce cups of coffee and went to find a place to sit. There were four separate rooms from which to choose, each with its own flavour and local art identity.

We opted for the space with windows looking out onto the snow and the fire in the corner to warm us. The yellow ceiling and blue walls set off the fourth wall clad in used burlap coffee bags from exotic tropical locales.

The whole experience was so delightful that the food didn’t even have to be good. But it was, oh yes, it was.

My soup was light and tangy and delicious. I stole a small piece of my friend’s sandwich for a taste.

The combination of two cheeses on grilled bread was delectable.

And, the coffee, well, it just had to be good, didn’t it.

I toured the other spaces and was pleasantly surprised to find myself looking, through a window, at the coffee roasting works.

Everywhere I looked there were colours and fabrics and textures. Lovely, catchy, yet tranquil music accompanied our lively conversation. I could have spent the whole day there.

On our way out, we each stopped to buy a treat to take home; my companion chose the cranberry nut bar and I opted for the brownie, chocolate cheesecake, of course.

Beauty and Humility in the ‘Cirque of the Unclimbables’

T

here’s a GoPro video I captured on my recent trip to the Cirque of the Unclimbables. In it, I am 200 feet up a rock wall, suspended from a questionable anchor made of various webbing and rusted bolts. Above me is 2,300 feet of vertical granite climbing; below me is snow and scree -- reminders that I am in the alpine.

I am cold, wet, scared and defeated. I recorded this moment in my journal, writing; Well, here I am at the top of pitch two. We are giving up: it’s wet and full of moss … I think we underestimated this kind of climbing. I was terrified the entire time. All of my skills went out the window.

This is how our climbing trip in the Nahanni National Park began.

But let’s start at the beginning …

How did I get myself into this situation in the first place? It began sometime last winter when, while browsing the Internet, I came upon an image of the 2,500foot mountain peak called Lotus Flower Tower.

I knew instantly, then and there, that I needed to climb it.

Never had I seen such a stunning and mesmerizing rock face. It looked as though it was a completely vertical and clean rock face, for its entire height, similar

My partner and I travelled to the ‘Cirque’ in late July of this summer. We chartered a float plane to fly us in from Finlayson Lake, north of Watson Lake, to Glacier Bay in Nahanni Park in the Northwest Territories.

The Cirque is home to some remarkable rock faces; however, almost everyone who goes there to climb, goes there to climb the Lotus. The Tower is a one-and-ahalf-hour boulder hike from Fairy Meadows campground, which sits within the mountain amphithe-

atre. To access Fairy Meadows from Glacier Lake, however, requires a four-hour hike up an aggressively steep, forested mountainside.

This place gives remote a new meaning.

We booked 12 days for the trip: the first and the last day were devoted solely to the flight and hike, with the middle 10 intended for climbing. At least, that’s if the weather held up. The area was infamous for bad weather. Reading trip reports from the lucky few who had gone before us, we heard horror stories where people didn’t see the sun for three weeks. Besides terrible weather, the climb

itself was known to remain wet -- especially on the bottom three pitches* -- for days on end.

On the first day, our float plane was late by six hours. We arrived at Glacier Lake around 8 p.m. and didn’t get to Fairy Meadows until sometime after midnight. By that time it had rained on us for an hour and it was beginning to get dark. Exhausted, we pitched a tent with the least amount of effort possible, and collapsed.

H

istorians agree that our modern Christmas tree tradition originated in the German Renaissance period (circa 1500). Martin Luther added candles as decoration. Prior to candles, Tannenbaum (or Christmas tree in English) were decorated with apples and nuts.

The practice of bringing evergreen boughs into the home at Solstice is much older.

Egyptian culture used evergreen boughs to celebrate eternal life.

Polish people celebrating Koliada, an ancient winter festival, enjoyed creating Podlazniczka, which are fir branches suspended from the ceilings. The branches were decorated with apples, nuts, stars made from straw and coloured paper.

In Georgia, Chichilaki, dried hazelnut or walnut branches, were shaped to form small coniferous trees. The people thought Chichilaki resembled the beard of St. Basil the Great.

The Christmas tree tradition

spread from Germany into other parts of Europe and then North America. In 1800 Charlotte of Mecklenberg-Strelitz, the German born wife of King George III of England, decorated a tree for a children’s party. In 1781 Brunswick soldiers stationed in Quebec decorated trees over the Solstice period.

Evergreen trees remind us all of green plants which will grow again in the coming spring and summer months.

I am lucky. My forest home provides my Christmas tree. A family event, Roger and our grandchildren love tramping through the forest looking for the perfect tree; hot chocolate and some early Christmas cookies are waiting in the cozy kitchen upon return.

A few days later, after the tree has warmed and the frost sublimed away, my favourite activity begins. I get to decorate the tree!

Our decorations are also fashioned in our home. Over the years, I have made little treasures for

the tree. Wooden spools with coloured ribbon and bells, knit candy canes and manicotti noodles covered with colourful aluminium foil to name a few. One year I collected cookie snack containers from children’s lunches. While I didn’t understand the fascination with the actual cookies, the containers made wonderful angel bodies.

Some of my favourite decorations come from other hands. As an Educational Assistant in years past, I received many ornaments – felt or clay treasures, each crafted by small children’s hands.

Antique cookie tins hold my decorations. Each year the spirit of giving and thoughtfulness is renewed as I carefully remove tissue paper from the most fragile decorations.

On a recent friend sleepover, my grandchildren, Darwin and Aria, helped friends Selena and Felicia Christie create some ornaments. A wonderful activity for a cont’d on page 15...

It is a most wonderful time of the year with my Tannebaum glistening in the living room.

Hypnosis is a Serious Business

T

he office is spacious, warm, comforting.

An oh-so-welcoming leather sofa and recliner are along the far wall under a soft pool of light.

One wall is painted a deep blue; another, a deep purple.

“Those are my favourite colours,” says Lee Ann Thomson in a profoundly soothing voice. Then she admits, “And, yes, blue and purple make you calm.”

That’s important, because this office needs to be all about “professional” and all about “relaxing.”

Thomson is a registered clinical hypnotherapist and she operates Thomson Hypnotherapy Clinic out of this office on the second floor of the Horwoods Mall. Before she can help clients solve issues with the power of their own minds, the setting has to be just right.

So, of course, my first question to Whitehorse’s newest hypnotherapist is this: “Are you going to make me cluck like a chicken?”

“Only if you want me to,” Thomson says with a practised warm and gentle smile.

It is not the first time she has heard this question, but it is an opening for her to address the often-distorted Hollywood depiction of hypnosis.

“That’s a stage hypnosis situation” she says of the entertainers who have fun with willing participants. “Therapeutic hypnosis is used to assist people to release negative emotions and thoughts and it is done in a respectful and confidential way.

“The interesting thing about hypnosis is (the client) is always in control; they can come up anytime from that trance.”

Do hypnotherapists use swinging pocket watches to hypnotize?

“I haven’t seen that used outside of a movie theatre,” says Thomson. “But I have seen some people use a spinning spiral to focus the eyes and focus their attention.”

This is serious business. Thomson’s clients come to her with serious issues such as anxiety, addictions, insomnia, grief, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and excess weight.

The key to solving these issues often lie in the subconscious, which is 90 per cent of the mind and it is powerful. Thomson says she helps people go there, find underlying or root issues, deal with them, and then get along with their lives.

For instance, one client had a fear of flying: “He had no memory of anything traumatic happening while he was flying, but, in hypnosis, we regressed in time and back and back until the very first time he had that feeling,” Thomson says. “It turns out that when he was a child, he was in an earthquake. So, fast forward through his life, it was the feeling of the plane’s turbulence and the feeling of the earthquake that were the common factors.”

The client did not erase those memories for the healing process to complete. Instead, he just viewed it from the perspective of an adult and understood it.

A popular service is weight loss.

Thomson starts with an intake (as always) that explains away misconceptions, such as the fact clients cannot give away secrets if they do not want to. And, if they do not want to be hypnotized, then she cannot hypnotize them.

As well, they are not asleep.

Indeed, “they are actually in a heightened state of awareness.”

With this information, the client can relax and go to the sofa or recliner... it is their choice.

Thomson starts some soothing music and uses that soothing voice of hers to help them enter a state of deep relaxation.

With trust built, the next session explores emotional issues that may hold back the client from losing weight.

In Session 3, Thomson places

a “hypnotic gastric band” around the client’s stomach to make them feel full after a small portion of food is eaten. No surgery required, it is the client’s mind that makes it happen.

The next two sessions work on habits, triggers, cravings and instilling good eating habits and an increased desire to lead an active lifestyle.

Thomson says she decided to undertake the training and become registered as a hypnotherapist when she saw a family member turn her life around after struggling with anxiety.

“The result was absolutely amazing,” Thomson says. “Today, she is a self-confident, focussed happy, young woman who is at ease with herself and the rest of the world.”

Cooler Tips

T

hese days the word “cooler” can mean a pre-mixed alcoholic beverage, but it’s also the name of an insulated box to keep your food and drinks cool.

Coolers come in various shapes, sizes and prices. A really large one seems like a good idea until you try to lift and carry it after it has been filled. Some come with wheels and a pull handle while others have smaller flip-open lids in the main lid. These smaller lids will probably leak and lead to your ice melting. Try to stay away from gimmicks. Get one with a tight fitting lid, preferably with a latch to keep it closed tightly.

Like many other purchases, the more money you spend to start with should guarantee a higher quality product. In a cooler, quality is important and keeping ice for a full week is possible with a top of the line unit.

I think it’s a good idea to buy three different sized coolers so you can carry a lot if you need to and if less space is needed, then one of the smaller units will do. Any cooler keeps the cold in better if it’s as full as it can be.

Empty space in a cooler leads to the melting of your ice, the loss of cold and perhaps spoilage of your food.

It is always a good idea to precool what will be placed in the cooler so your ice doesn’t have to cool it down, just maintain the cool.

If on a multi day adventure carry any frozen meat or other products in a separate cooler that will only be opened to remove some frozen food. The frequent opening of a cooler lid will seriously decrease the time that your ice will last. Label the frozen-food cooler so it isn’t opened by every-

one just to see what’s in it. Items in the frozen-food cooler can also be individually wrapped to make them last longer.

Cooler Tips • Always keep the cooler out of the sun or at least cover it with a towel or tarp.

• Various sized freezer packs keep longer than ice and there is no melt-water in your food.

• If using ice, a block keeps longer than cubes, but in either case keep the plastic bag(s) of ice in a cloth grocery bag inside the cooler. This will add a day or two to the ice staying intact. Keep the bag folded down over the open ice-bag.

• The freezer packs will also last a lot longer if kept in a cloth bag or even a small nylon drawstring bag.

• Whether using ice or freezer packs, fill in the area at the top of the cooler with an old fleece garment if using ice (fleece does not soak up water) or an old beach towel if using freezer packs.

• Meat that has now thawed will last many days if your cooler will keep it cool.

• When your ice is gone, you can put items in Ziploc bags and put them in a nearby creek.

ast Friday I returned from a run to find The Frenchman shovelling snow. The end result is like an iced cake: smooth, precise and clean.

It’s peculiar how one can go from being wrapped in one’s tiny world to having a sudden connection with things beyond comprehension. Upon reaching the cabin we found texts from The Frenchman’s brother in Toronto, about the chaos in Paris. We followed the headlines, The Frenchman talked to friends and family to ascertain they were unscathed, and we both felt strangely uneasy.

Even here, safe in West Dawson.

Oddly, we knew about everything before The Frenchman’s parents, even though they live 5 km south of the Eleventh Arrondissement, the area in downtown Paris where much of the violence took place.

Listening to a family Skype conversation the morning after, where I caught phrases like “étate du guerre,” I felt deeply saddened by humankind.

I struggle to find words about this. I think of it though. And when no clear solutions are evident, I have the luxury to stop thinking because I’m at a distance, and because my thoughts will neither change what has happened, nor how lucky I am.

The good fortunate blessing of my existence was evident on Saturday’s trip up the Top of the World Highway via snowmobile.

Here, I tried to process how the absurdly beautiful and serene environment before us is part of the same planet that experienced such horrors the previous week.

Everything was frosted and crystallized, the trees Disneyesque with lopsided blankets of snow, the sky spoke in pastel colours and the mountains marched with monochrome stoicism to the horizon.

Friday Dec 11 Caribou from the Fortymile Herd meandered across the road, napped in ditches and dotted the hillsides. They seemed as perplexed by our presence as I often am by the rest of humanity. I hated disturbing these innocuous herbivores with the snowmobile, yet I also wanted to snatch a moment from their world.

As peaceful as their life looks, I fully understand it’s not. We saw one young caribou with a bloody neck, likely the result of a failed wolf attack. Two days later The Frenchman arrived home from a walk announcing the discovery of a caribou in a ditch near the cabin. It seems this poor bull fell from a cliff above the road and broke its back. It was still alive and had clearly been there for several hours, but could not use its hind legs.

With permission from conservation officers and help from knowledgeable neighbours, it was quickly dispatched, skinned, gutted, quartered and the meat shared around. Later, over a feast

of fried heart, with warm words and new friendships, I realised that although the world may be damaged, West Dawson is indeed a good place.

For all my thoughts about terrorism and caribou I’ve only reached one conclusion: I hope when my end comes it’s not with fear and it’s like the snow: smooth, precise and clean.

Post Script - The river stopped Nov. 17, the same date as 2014.

In several days, once the ice is thick enough, West Dawsonites will be physically reconnected to the world. This too makes me strangely uneasy; I feel unready to rejoin its unruly ranks and would prefer cloistering in a cabin indefinitely. Still, I suppose this is idealistic and reality beckons.

ildlife management is a complex science. One way to increase all species of wildlife is to manipulate habitat to its maximum breeding potential – be it a stream, a nesting area for birds or food range for mammals.

In wildlife management there is always the unexpected that we call the “X factor.”

Let’s look at how the x factor can impact a species life cycle with the example of a rabbit.

Let’s say we have 50 wild rabbits in a controlled acreage. While a lucky rabbit may live a full year, the average wild rabbit lives about six months, regardless of whether it is hunted or not.

To survive the coming winter we must not have more than 100

units of rainfall last spring, 100 units of winter cover, no more than 100 units of underground groundhog burrows. We must have 100 units of cats and foxes along with 100 units of the best rabbit food. The rabbit survives the winter under perfect conditions (Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes) and we end up with 50 rabbits.

Now let’s bring the X factor into play. We take 20 units of winter cover away and leave all other units as they are. Winter cover now becomes the problem and we

end up with only 40 rabbits.

Leaving the winter cover at 80 units, we throw in another X factor and reduce the food to 60 units. Now the big problem is the reduction in the number of food units and the rabbit population drops to 30.

Now to try and bring back the rabbit population we restore the winter cover to 100 units. Do we get our 50 rabbits back? Unfortunately it just does not happen that way. Regardless of whether the rabbits are hunted or not, all factors expressed will determine the population of all wild species.

Weather is a key X factor. The weather is a major factor with all species of wildlife, but especially with birds.

Back in the early 1960s I did a three-year life cycle study on Hungarian partridge and conditions that affected its populations, including fall farm field harvest, spring planting, predator numbers, nest egg numbers, hunter success and the weather condition through all seasons.

Even if all the conditions were ideal for the Hungarian partridge – the king of all hunting birds – they would be lucky to see a second winter.

The one condition that could bring havoc to this upland bird was a winter ice storm. In the winter they would burrow down into the snow in a group of 10 to 15 birds, called a covey. If a heavy snowfall covered the covey, and then an ice storm followed, the ice would freeze over the covey and the birds could not get back to the surface. All would die.

With the Hungarian Partridge, the weather was a major factor.

As an aside, the Yukon College now has the study on the Hungarian partridge available in the main library.
