Personal vs. Actual

S

ometimes there are moments in life where our experience of scenes and events, or our memory of them, doesn’t match up with their physical form. It’s tough to say which is more real— the way we perceive things, or the things themselves.

In her exhibition Tangled—on display until August 12 at Dawson City’s Confluence Gallery—Karen Thomas presents us with a series

of drawings that clearly favor the personal aspects of human experience.

The drawings in Tangled feature scenes that could easily have been be plucked from the Dawson streets outside if the gallery, placed alongside other scenes and images that could only have been plucked from the imagination.

been framed in worn, found wood of various hues and dimensions.

Various media have been used, but black ink is prominent, and a few of the works are digital prints made onto the surface of drawing paper.

Thomas draws a hesitant line, but the imagery remains for the most part representational and proportional. Occasionally, however, you might see a playful gesture that manipulates the true-tolifeness of the artist’s subjects.

Some of the works have a storybook quality to them, as if they were taken from an illustrated book without their accompanying words.

Aside from the recurring hints of life in Dawson, it’s hard to pinpoint time and place in Thomas’s work. Any one piece could be based on a memory, a historical photograph, or drawn yesterday on Third St.—a reminder that thoughts and memories aren’t accountable to time or place.

Despite the variety of styles and media, it’s clear that the artist is intent on sharing common ground with her audience.

We often think of all things “personal” as relevant to just one person, or only a small group of people. Tangled serves as a reminder that creating images is one way of bridging the gap between individuals—seeing things as another person sees them helps us to untangle our own experiences in the world.

AdF: There seems to be a fascination with childhood emerging in these illustrations, you depict puppets and dolls, Sesame Street, and some figures that resemble children’s illustrations.

Is there a connection between this fascination and the subjects you depict in the rest of the work—the street scenes and portraiture?

KT: After I finished the drawing of the Mexican marionettes, I found it interesting how they looked like more than just wood, cloth and string. They looked like a couple tangled in a relationship, but not happy or elated to be there.

At the same time they looked like they were going to stay with each other, regardless, and had no intention of detangling.

It was at this time that I was applying for the show and I thought this would be an interesting theme—to compare illustrations of dolls and reproductions of us people, and see to what degree they speak to our experiences and conditions.

AdF: Does the exhibition represent a particular selection of drawings on the “tangled’’ theme, or is it a kind of overview of your work and styles?

KT: It is more an overview of my work over the past winter. I wanted to discipline myself and draw at least four hours a week to improve.

I chose ink because there is no room for erasing and I wanted to learn to trust my lines. The exhibition is a selection of some of my favorites.

Although the marionettes are to me the epitome of Tangled, I regret choosing this word as the title for the show. There are two other illustrations of couples in the show who don’t look “tangled” at all, just happy.

I believe to be truly happy in love or any relationship, you have to give of yourself without losing yourself. So “tangled” as a term is limited in describing relationships and social experiences.

This selection represents different relationships and experiences, not just tangled ones.

AdF: How did you come to illustration as a means of expression?

Are there aspects of drawing that you find liberate you where, say, photographs are limiting? Are there aspects of drawing that limit your expression as well?

KT: When I was younger I focused on creating “accurate” illustrations. By this I mean almost photographic copies of what you see.

Because of this I never really enjoyed drawing and gave up on it for a long time. Now I am happy to find how liberating drawing can be when you don’t worry about this at all.

Through using a looser hand and intuition, a meaning or feeling can be conveyed rather that a perfect reproduction, and this can be so lovely.

The Art of Reclamation

A

mber Walker’s fourth solo exhibition bears the title Reclamation—a word that has several meanings for the 27-year-old Whitehorse artist.

In part, Walker says, it is about reclaiming the Aztec side of her heritage, something she knew nothing about as a child.

“I’d always ask, ‘Why am I so dark?’ and my Mom would say, ‘Well, you’re Mexican’ and just leave it at that. She wasn’t opposed to me being Aztec, she just didn’t know.”

Walker grew up in Modesto, California with a mother with a mother whose features clearly demonstrated her Irish-German roots and a younger sister with blonde hair and hazel eyes.

She found herself being treated as an outcast by both “really proud Latino families and really proud Europeans” in her neighbourhood.

“I was kind of stuck in this very… I like to call it no-boundaries spiritual place of not identifying with anything at the time.”

Her youthful response to not fitting in racially anywhere was to say, “OK. Well, I’ll just remain the black sheep,” she admits.

That began to change when she was 15.

“When I met my Dad, I asked him and he said I was Aztec, and I kind of let it go.”

Still, it wasn’t until she moved to Yukon five years ago and married a Southern Tuchone man that she began exploring her indigenous heritage in earnest.

“I was embraced by the Southern Tuchone people, and I started dancing with them and I felt more at home, but I still felt like there was a piece missing,” Walker says.

She began to dig into her roots, researching Aztec art, religious beliefs even Aztec dancing.

“A big part of what I’m say-

“The Snail God” ing through these pieces is, ‘Yes, I’m Aztec, definitely, and I’m reclaiming that part of my ancestry,’” she says.

“But I’m also reclaiming the idea that if we’re not one with each other, if we’re not going back to the land, if we’re not realizing that a lot of what we’re doing now is destroying us, then there’s really nothing left for us to do other than suffer the consequences of what we’ve been doing.”

the upcoming exhibition are clearly influenced by Aztec art, in both style and theme.

One of her new pieces, entitled “The Snail God”, depicts one of the deities responsible for the various suns in the Aztec belief system.

“There were five different suns,” each ruled by a certain deity chosen by one of the higher gods, Walker explains.

“And each sun ended in destruction, as it is said.”

Walker admits her ancestors were a “hostile” people who engaged in certain questionable rituals.

“I’m not saying that my people were perfect, that’s for sure,” she says, citing “a lot of the practices back in the day when it was OK to take prisoners and treat them well, and then kill them the next day.”

These human sacrifices were done “in hopes that the sun would

keep on living, so that the land would be fruitful,” she explains.

“That, of course, is not something I agree with,” she adds with a rich laugh.

Something else Walker unearthed in her research was the Aztec reputation for being pessimistic, even though “they add a lot of flowers” in their work.

“Which I thought was kind of ironic, because when I first started painting, I would add flowers everywhere, even if it was the most really deep, grueling, unpleasant piece of work I was doing, there were always flowers there,” she says.

“So I guess a piece of my ancestry was already leaked out before I even knew it existed, really.”

Those familiar with Walker’s previous work as a painter may see the new exhibition as a major departure, although she did display some of her pencil and ink works at the Adäka Cultural Festival in June.

“People were saying this is what you should stick to. Of course, I’m very careful with what other people say, but I definitely already had that in mind, just sticking with this for a little bit longer to see where it takes me.”

Birdwatcher Mary Whitley says she got a chuckle from a case of mistaken identity on our July 26 cover.

Those handsome birds, of course, are actually named Bonaparte’s gulls, not Napoleon’s gulls.

“They are named for Charles Lucian Jules Laurent Bonaparte, younger brother of Napoleon, Prince of Canino and Musignano (1803-1857),” Mary advised in an email.

After his time in United States from 1823 to 1828, the Emperor’s sibling went on to be considered the father of systemic ornithology.

“Pretty good creds for a guy who was only 20 years old when he arrived in North America,” Mary’s note concludes.

Thanks for setting us straight, Mary.

Out on His Own

T

here used to be a band in Whitehorse called Scotch.

It was a party band, centred around brothers Ryan and Declan O’Donovan. But in the natural course of bands and families, the members moved on.

Declan now divides his time between Whitehorse and Montreal, and is about to release his selftitled solo album.

But this is not Scotch. This is a singer-songwriter’s album, a mix of blues, jazz, rock and roots music that draws inspiration from the early works of Tom Waits O’Donovan’s voice is rough but higher than Waits’s, with less whisky and gravel, but equally distinctive.

Backed by Bruce Bergman on guitars, Robert Bergman on bass and Lonnie Powell on drums, plus a host of guest musicians, including a horn section arranged by Daniel Timmermans, O’Donovan plays all the piano and organ parts with a deceptively easy skill, highlighting the emotion in his voice.

His songwriting has been recognized and rewarded. He won the blues category of the West Coast Songwriters International Songwriting Competition for “Cheap Souvenirs”, a song featured on this CD. It’s a song about a touring musician, missing someone, despite the excitement and beauty

of a new city.

Like a camera, a cheap souvenir/ I know it all means nothing/ ’cause you’re not here.

Under O’Donovan’s jazzy piano is a quavering Hammond organ and horn section lifting the song upwards, with hints of gospel.

“I Want You Close” has a 1970s funk-rock groove, with piano and organ playing off each other, supported by David Haddock’s electric bass and Powell’s drums and the horns that take over, crescendo and fade at the end.

O’Donovan’s love of Waits’s music can be felt on songs such as “Things That You Lose” and “Death of a Salesman”.

With Jesse Zubot’s plaintive, mournful Gypsy-style violin and O’Donovan’s combination of piano and organ, “Things That You Lose” is about a breakup and the parts of life that get left behind. It’s a song that could easily fit on Waits’s Foreign Affairs or Swordfishtombones albums.

With a graveyard marimba played by Andrea McColeman and sounding like skeletons dancing, “Death of a Salesman” is the story of a swindler who discovers himself in front of St. Peter, attempting to impress his way through the Pearly Gates: This is the first party that I’ve been to/

Where I couldn’t sneak in through the back door The salesman goes on to plead: Let me in for a minute/ I’d like to have a word with the man upstairs.

“Where Are You” is a song of nostalgia and loss played so touchingly on solo piano that it makes you wonder how O’Donovan could have amassed the life experience in such a short time to write it.

It fades into the instrumental track, “Outro”, a quiet jam with his band, O’Donovan’s piano mixing playfully with a muted trumpet.

Although comparisons to Waits can be made, O’Donovan has a unique voice, and is emerging as an internationally-recognized songwriter and equally skilled as a musician.

O’Donovan will present his CD release concert, along with the Steve Brockley Band, at the Yukon Arts Centre on Thursday, August 9 at 8 p.m.

Movies with Brooms

T

he Whitehorse Curling Club will undergo a transformation a little over a week from now, taking on a picnic/drive-in atmosphere for Movie Night at the Rink.

Families are encouraged to bring a lawn chairs or blankets and watch a trio of specially selected all-time favourites on the club’s two large screens.

The evening double bill starts off with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, followed by a pre-midnight screening of the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The afternoon is reserved for children’s fare, with a showing of the animated feature, Rio. Rio tells the story of Blu, a macaw bird from Brazil, who’s decidedly out of his element but totally comfortable as the companion to Linda, a quiet bookstore owner in Minnesota.

Their serene life together is interrupted by Tulio, an ornithologist who informs Linda that Blu is almost the last of his species. He persuades her to accompany him back to Rio de Janeiro, where he hopes Blu will mate with Jewel, the only other remaining macaw.

Not only is Jewel uninterested, but the two are kidnapped by exotic bird smugglers.

Director Carlos Saldanha is from Rio, and the brilliant palette of colour for his film, along with a lively Brazilian soundtrack, make for a compelling visual and audio treat.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is the ultimate slacker movie, from director John Hughes. For anyone growing up in the ’80s, Matthew Broderick’s portrayal of the ultimate fantasy day and high point in creative truancy is a generational

marker.

The title characters feigns illness to get the day off school, and persuades his girlfriend and best buddy to accompany him on an exuberant whirlwind tour of Chicago, visiting Wrigley Field, the art museum and the Sears Tower,

as being about “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness—very basic stuff, and I don’t know that there’s ever been a happier movie. It’s a movie that you cannot watch without feeling really, really great.”

The phrase “cult classic” might

well have been invented for The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Taking its inspiration from a London stage production, the film made its debut in August 1975, and has been in uninterrupted release ever since.

It tells the unlikely story of Brad and Janet, knocking at the door of a sinisterlooking mansion one rainy night, seeking assistance for a flat tire.

They’re immediately whisked into a surreal netherworld of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, courtesy of Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his degenerate band of transsexual Transylvanians.

Whitehorse Curling Rink business manager Matt Bustin says the traditional audience participation is encouraged, so bring your own toast and rice along with your lawn chair.

The club is perhaps one of Whitehorse’s best-kept secrets, in that it’s the largest indoor space in the city, with a seating capacity of around 1,200. Movie Night at the Rink is the club’s first effort at holding this sort of laid-back late summer entertainment.

Admission price for the evening double bill is just $12. You can bring your own picnic, snack on burgers, popcorn and cotton candy at the club’s concession, or treat yourself to Tony’s Pizza at their own food stand.

In keeping with the drive-in theme, Angelina’s Toy Boutique is awarding prizes for the best do-ityourself cardboard car design for kids who show up for Rio. Rio screens at 4 p.m., Ferris Bueller’s Day Off at 8 p.m. and The Rocky Horror Picture Show at 10:30 pm., all on Saturday, August 11.

Vino Borealis with Peter Turner

Treats for Summer Evenings

I

t took until the middle of July, but it seems (I don’t want to jinx us) that summer has arrived in the Yukon!

The past two weekends have actually been HOT, and I’ve been lucky enough to spend two Saturdays nights kayaking, swimming and sitting outside with friends, enjoying picnic dinners and treats off an open fire.

I’ve also been tasting a number of moderately priced reds, from both South America (a few additions to the tasting from last several columns), as well as from that under-represented emerging wine force, Portugal, and my favourite, Italy!

First, from Chile, a 2011 Cono Sur Tocornal ($18.70 at the YLC), a cabernet sauvignon/merlot blend from the Central Valley of Chile.

In my book, it also gets bonus points for coming in a 1.5 litre bottle, which means that you are paying the equivalent of $9.35 for a regular size wine bottle, a deal that is pretty hard to beat!

Blending the juice of cabernet sauvignon and merlot grape juices to make a tasty red wine is a 1,000-plus-year-old tradition that originated in France. The great wines of the Bordeaux region of

west central France are largely comprised of a mixes of the juices of these two grapes.

In Bordeaux, they might also include the juice of other red wine grapes, such as cabernet franc, and in Australia they might substitute shiraz grape juice for the merlot.

The objective of blending the juice of different grapes is to bring the different taste qualities of the two or more grape juices to add depth and complexity to the wine.

In the case of the Cono Sur Tocornal, the merlot grape juice imparts softer, rich fruit notes to both the bouquet (smell) and the taste of the wine, while the cabernet sauvignon adds strength and force to the taste.

The cabernet grape skins add tannins to the blends (giving that slight roughness you feel on your tongue, and perhaps the back of your throat).

The combination of these two taste sensations tends to complement grilled or roast red meats, with the fruitiness of the merlot working with the rich juiciness of a burger and the accompany-

Malbec, as I have mentioned in other articles, is another grape originally from the Bordeaux region, and would have traditionally been blended with merlot or other Bordeaux red wine grapes, when it was grown there several hundred years ago.

After several decades of California leading the wine world trend of producing single grape wines such as pure cabernet sauvignons and merlots, and Australia imitating with pure shirazes, as well as cabs and merlots, today vintners in many countries are looking at blending traditions that date back hundreds of years from France and Italy, or other parts of Europe, to produce wines that mix two PHOTOS: winealign.com or more grapes together.

Portugal is adopting the same bite into the burger or steak.

The Trapiche Astica merlot/ approach, but taking two of their malbec 2011 ($10.70) from the own traditional grapes to make Mendoza region of Argentina the TR Vista 2008 Tinta Roriz ($13.10), from the Beiras region works very much the same way.

Again the merlot imparts the of central Portugal.

In this case, they have taken fruity notes to the blend, where in this case the malbec takes on the touriga nacional, the premium ing ketchup that I top mine with, while the roughness and body of the cabernet seems to work with the charred outside of the meat, and also wash away the fatty richness that fills my mouth when I

grape that is traditionally used in Portugal in the production of their deservedly famous Port wines, and blended it with tinta roriz, another Portuese/Spanish region red wine grape.

The same grape is known as tempranillo, in Spain. In this 15 percent/85 percent blend (respectively), the touriga nacional plays the role of the cabernet sauvignon, providing the strong tannins and hints of tobacco, while the tinta roriz brings the red cherry fruity notes to the blends.

To my mind, the mix really works.

All three of these wines are winners, and I have been drawing on them regularly to host barbecues out at my lakeside cabin.

They are all excellent values, and well worth a try.

Clouds on the Horizon?

T

his summer, the word “cloud” has popped up in conversation with some frequency. However, you are probably also seeing the term used beyond descriptions of the awful weather.

The internet cloud basically refers to running applications or storing data somewhere on the internet, rather than on your local computer. To some extent, you probably do this already.

If you run an online game or store your photos on Facebook or TwitPic, you are using the cloud. Creating documents on Google Docs or using offsite data storage is a common practice, and cloud computing is becoming a more frequent occurrence.

What do you, as a regular computer user, need to know about cloud computing?

There are conveniences and disadvantages to its use and you should look at these carefully before committing yourself to relying on the cloud as a resource.

First to consider are the terms of use. When you store your information on a cloud storage site, what rights are you granting to those storing the data?

For example, the terms of reference for Google Drive, an offsite

storage and collaboration site, state: “... you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide licence to use, host, store, reproduce,

modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display

This mean your data, as legitimate as it may be, is no longer available to you until such time as legal issues are solved. This could take years to rectify and, if you have no other copies of your data, you will not be able to recover it.

So, while the cloud is convenient for saving and sharing large amounts of information, remember that you do have to exercise some caution in its use.

Read the terms of usage carefully and, where necessary, remember that your information, properly backed up and saved on your own computer, is far safer than storing it in a location on the internet over which you have no control.

or Yukoners who grew up in Dawson City in the 1950s and ’60s, Bear Creek is a symbol of a lost age.

The abandoned mining base about 10 km out of Dawson once served as headquarters and repair yard for the dredges and corporate mining of mid-century, an oft-forgotten time between the romantic age of the gold rush and the nostalgic age of tourism.

“Being born and raised here, I saw Dawson itself at what I call the ‘quiet years’, back in the ’50s and ’60s when all the merchants were leaving and all the buildings were left full of stuff, but empty of humans,” says Greg Hakonson.

“We played in all those buildings. And Bear Creek is really the only place left that even has a hint of that. The machine shop, the engineer’s shop, some of the stuff still sitting where the guys set it down on their last shift.”

Hakonson is the visionary behind Art Gate, a pilot project that brought 12 local and international artists from as far away as Berlin to Bear Creek. From July 12 to 19 they worked to create works that represent Bear Creek.

Some displays featured photographs of the interior of the site, while others brought in metallurgy or carving to evoke the feel of the old mining town.

Hakonson envisioned Art Gate more than a decade ago, around 1999, when the Dawson City Arts Society (DCAS) was created.

“It was back when we were doing all the visioning and strategizing about DCAS, and what it could be, and what it should be,” he says.

At the time, the board members were all too busy to take on something of this scale.

Now, with an energetic board and a need for a new project, the time was right.

Though this is the inaugural year of Art Gate, the committee’s long-term hopes are high. The goals of Hakonson and the DCAS are threefold: to raise international awareness of Bear Creek and, through that, revenue for restoration; to raise awareness of DCAS nationally and internationally; and to provide access to resources for artists to move internationally for these projects.

DCAS’s other projects include the Dawson City International Short Film Festival and operating the ODD Gallery in Dawson.

Hakonson says the term “Art Gate” was inspired by the ’90s sci-fi show title, Stargate.

In similar fashion to the fictional wormholes that transported humans across space, DCAS hopes to expand Art Gate into a way for artists to gain the knowledge, accommodation and grants necessary to travel internationally.

The Dawson branch will focus its efforts on Bear Creek, and each participating community will have its own project in a similar vein.

Bear Creek is owned by Parks Canada and is not usually open to the public. However, Hakonson says his long-term relationship with the site as well as the reputation of DCAS helped pave the way for Parks to come on board with the project.

Much credit is also due to the work of the Art Gate committee. Rian LougheedSmith, chair of the committee, says Parks

was excited about working with DCAS. In the future, Lougheed-Smith and the rest of the committee hope to attract a larger number of artists create a permanent Bear Creek collection of artwork to be on tour indefinitely.

“Since this is a pilot project, there is a small amount this year,” she says.

“But we haven’t been looking at it numbers-wise.”

She says there are no specific criteria the committee looks for in artists, and that they would not turn interested parties away.

The week-long art frenzy culminated in a one-night-only exhibit at the Yukon School of Visual Arts (SOVA) on July 19. This year the exhibit will only be shown at SOVA, and some artists will be using these pieces in their own future shows.

Philippe LeBlond, a metalworking artist from Whitehorse, is one such participant.

He made his artwork out of salvaged material from the dump.

One of his pieces clatters, flashes and whistles as a conveyor belt turns inside a metal box.

“It’s kind of a dredge crossed with a machine shop. I’ve got all these iconic images on the dredge buckets—gold miner, raven, Pierre Berton, Mounties, oil barrels spilling oil—all the things that kind of go along with the mining history,” he says.

“And on the back side, where the conveyor belt comes out, there’s a loonie attached, so every so often a loonie comes out the back just to remind you what the motivation was.”

SOVA doesn’t have a metalworking studio, so LeBlond worked in the facilities at the nearby public school.

“They didn’t really have anywhere else, which is an interesting question. I guess they don’t really have the money, but you have a school of visual arts and there’s no metalworking,” he says.

Fellow artist, Dawsonite Leslie Chapman, agrees that such a facility would be useful in a town with Dawson’s mining history.

“Because it’s about gold and blacksmithing, and that’s why this project resonated for me,” she says.

Chapman and her husband are both miners. Her artwork—jewelry made from small gold shackles to represent the juxtaposition of machinery and goldsmithing—incorporated gold from her own mine.

“I really admired what the machine shop did there at Bear Creek. They created things, they made amazing metalwork, fantastic blacksmithing, machining, engineering—just amazing.

“And in the same time, in the same facility, they melted hundreds of thousands of ounces of gold over the years. So to me, the juxtaposition of the gold metal and the machine shop is very interesting.”

Regardless of the facilities, LeBlond says he’d be willing to come back another year.

“We’ll see where it goes,” he says. “We’ll see what they throw at us next year.”

managed to mow our lawn before the rain began to sprinkle this morning and was pleased to find that several of the dog damaged areas that I reseeded earlier in the summer no longer stand out as patches of bare earth. Indeed, the new grass there is greener and thicker than some of the other sections of the lawn.

I’m not fussy about matching colours, or what kind of grass grows on my lawn. I would be the despair of any southern suburbia as I’m happy just as long as it’s green and it grows.

It brightens up the world after a long winter that’s mostly shades of white and grey.

Dawson really does seek to bloom in the summer. The most dramatic change of all comes on Gold Show Weekend in May, when everyone buys their hanging baskets and porches all over town spring into life.

There’s been a lot of preparation before that happens. Some people are talented enough and have the patience to get their own plants ready in greenhouses and plant rooms.

At Chez Davidson we’re not good at that, and while there may be a few roses that manage to winter over in our partly heated crawlspace, we’re mostly looking to spend some money of fresh plants each year.

We have some perennial wildflowers that seem to survive, but that’s about it.

Fortunately we can turn to the folks like the Vogts, Lenarts and

McDonalds, whose greenhouses supply Dawsonites with everything from garden vegetables to trees when we need them. We also have several landscaping companies around town that help to keep things vital.

This year I was late getting started on my own mowing and the grass suddenly leaped beyond what my little electric mower could handle so I had the first cutting of the year done for me.

After that I can keep up if I spend a couple of hours every week or 10 days, depending on the ratio of sunlight to rain. This year has been very good in that way.

Dawson has quite a few public gardens too, some looked after by contactors hired by the City of Dawson and some by Parks Canada.

Victory Gardens, over by the Dawson City Museum, is one of our oldest, having been established between the two World Wars. It comes complete with a massive flowerbed, flagpoles and two WWI vintage Great War field artillery pieces.

Parks looks after the grounds around the Commissioners Residence and does a lovely job. Martha Black, who was a great plant lover, would be happy. There is generally a good display of flowering plants in place by the day of the Commissioner’s Tea in early June.

It was a bit chilly in late May this year and things had not progressed as fast as usual by June 13, but it’s a very nice walk right

now, and tourists are strolling through the grounds just about every time we walk the dog past there in the evening.

We can only hope that the cuts to Parks’ budget won’t have an impact on the gardens.

Mary Hanulik Gardens, just off Front Street, is one of our most dramatic sites and a testament to a good idea. Originally it was simply a little road to the top of the dike where there was an access hole to the catchment basin that feeds the outflow to our infamous sewage discharge pipe. (Yes, that is why it sometimes smells a bit up there.) Our public works superintendent, Norm Carlson, decided it would be better to pretty it up a bit, and had some bushes and flowers planted. Then it became the site chosen for three large boulders that carry plaques to honour some of the Klondike’s founders.

With the passage of time it became a distinctive site and acquired the local name of Norm’s Hump, because of its shape. That was considered somewhat undignified. The search for something with more class led it to be renamed Mary Hanulik Gardens in honour of a lady whose residence was always a byword for beautiful plants and gardens during her life-

time. It is part of one of the many ways to walk along and enjoy the dike with its view of both the Yukon River and Front Street.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

liken her to a fizzy drink—refreshing, invigorating and fun.”

“She was a hummingbird with high energy.”

Those colourful terms are how two very good friends, Debra Fendrick and Pamela Muir, remember Sylvia MacIntosh. Her colleagues, friends and former husband all describe her with warmth and admiration.

MacIntosh was born in Sidney, Nova Scotia in April, 1959. She passed away 47 years later after a brief battle with brain cancer.

Her death was, and still, is devastating to those who knew her.

Fendrick has wonderful memories of her friend, including an incident that occurred after the birth of Fendrick’s daughter.

MacIntosh, along with her young son Louis, visited the hospital. Louis was too young for visiting but... well, rules are meant to be massaged.

Along with Louis, MacIntosh brought a huge stuffed bunny for the newborn. The bunny is still a much loved toy in the Fendrick household.

MacIntosh was a respected lawyer, carefully making her way through life and making the world a better place as she went. She practised private law in Vancouver and Whitehorse and worked for Preston Willis Leach in Whitehorse prior to moving into the public sector.

She came into her own as part of the negotiating team for the Yukon Government in First Nations land claims and self-government negotiations. She had a great ability to focus on what was before her and displayed an encyclopedic knowledge of law.

MacIntosh’s written opinions are still referred to six years after her death. Her career with the government included land claims negotiations, litigation and contract work.

Pamela Muir shared some particular memories.

MacIntosh was active in a loose-knit group of women lawyers. At a time when most of the lawyers in Whitehorse were male, the female group provided support, friendship, laughter.

Muir was new to Whitehorse, articling with the Yukon Government. MacIntosh invited her to the group and the two women became fast friends.

Muir, also from Nova Scotia, respected MacIntosh both at work and in her private life. MacIntosh was active—she skied, ran, camped.

Fendrick remembers MacIntosh inviting her to one of the pot-lucks as well. They became friends, supporting each other in career and private life.

Dave Kedziora (former husband) and Muir both spoke of MacIntosh’s love of interior design.

Her office was an art gallery, and

Muir loved visiting the office.

Kedziora mentioned that their house also was tastefully decorated and reflected MacIntosh’s respect and love of art and design.

Her sons, Henry, Charlie and Louis, were the loves of her life.

MacIntosh was a dedicated mother, sharing her love of nature, sport and Maritime “down-toearthiness”!

As a mother herself, Fendrick also cherishes MacIntosh’s advice: when you become a mother you just fall in love with your babies.

Fendrick and Monica Leask (another friend and colleague) regularly walk by the memorial bench placed on the Millennium Trail to honour their friend. It helps them deal with the unbelievable: that MacIntosh is not here anymore.

This is the second in a three-part series on Mark Beese’s recent trip to Tanzania in an attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. In the final instalment, he will describe the climb itself. nothing like that—100 percent effort and volume!

That doesn’t make quite the impact it did at the time; I’ll post the video on the website edition of this article to give you a better feeling for it.My next impression was how unexpectedly polite and honest and fair these kids were.

Again, not at all like the kids from the Charles Dickens tale (I can’t believe the impact that stupid musical made).

About five of us were handing out pencils to a mob of kids. It was next to impossible to give a pencil to a kid who already had one; they would show you the one they already had and point out a kid who didn’t have one.

And it wasn’t because there was someone giving out Frisbees behind me, either. Those stayed in the bag until after the clothes and pencils and such were given away.After the welcome performances and the clothes and such were given out, the fun began.

Out came the toys and goodies.

Gone was the organized distribution of goods and we really got a chance to meet and spend time with the kids.

Another surprise... they spoke excellent English! (OK, so did the kids in Oliver, but they didn’t speak a word of Swahili... Man, did I hate that musical!).

Winnie was the first girl I had a chance to chat with. She was eager to give me a quick tour of the place and show me the room she stayed in.

The kids all loved to have their pictures taken. You could hardly snap a picture before they were charging you to come and look at it.

It wasn’t as if they had never seen a camera or an iPod be-

ambo! Poa! In the first article of this series, I explained Mambo. Poa is the proper response. Described to me as: Mambo = What’s Up? Poa = It’s cool.

At the end of our visit to Tanzania, we had an opportunity to visit a local orphanage our Canadian trip organizers and our Moshibased guiding company were involved in supporting only blocks from the hotel we stayed before and after our assault on Mount Kilimanjaro. Many of us had brought

along clothing, toys and supplies from back home to give out.

Now, I didn’t know the situation at the orphanage. I didn’t know how many kids were going to be there, where they came from, how they got there (I have been consistently asked if the kids were AIDS orphans), or what the success rate of placing them is.

I didn’t go there pre-loaded with any information, expectations or intentions of changing the world for them. I just thought I would visit and see if I could make a brief, but positive, impact on

them for one day.

Boy, did I have that one backwards...These kids were amazing.

Far from the foot-dragging doldrums atmosphere of the orphanage in the movie Oliver, these kids were some of the most outgoing, friendly, constantly-smiling kids I have ever seen.

I have video of them singing a welcome song when we arrived.

I am used to the performances I did at that age, or seeing my son’s performances at Selkirk Elementary. You know, where they put about a third of the kids in

Claire’s “Rama” sporting a very non-African sweatshirt fore. They were quite skilled on them. Leave them your iPod for a minute and they would be scrolling through your photo library and dragging and zooming your pictures like professionals. I showed Rama my camera and how to take pictures. I think he was taking better pictures than I was.

I started taking video of the kids and showing it to them. They loved that, and Rama wanted in on this action as well.

I hand him my camera and BANG, he’s off like a shot, holding my camera in front of him. A quick flashback of the Artful Dodger, but the panic subsides as I realize he’s not taking my camera back to Fagin’s lair (Damn... that stupid musical again).

Instead, Rama was running my camera into all of the action. I had tried to take video of the action but failed miserably in comparison to the kids.

A six-foot fat guy has to stand back from the action and try to get good footage from a distance. A short, barefoot eight-year-old orphan has no such restrictions.

They were in the middle of the action, right up close and in your face.

I think Rama has a future in the film industry.

It seemed everyone who went to the orphanage that day had a Rama of their own, and more than one. Rama, Gift, Regland... they were like my posse for the day, and each of us seemed to have one. OK, so it wasn’t all Christmas Day and recess time at the orphanage. The kids didn’t seem to have their own shoes, just a pile of generic Croc-style shoes they

would grab from (and not necessarily a pair) when they felt they needed them.

The rooms were small, just fitting two triple bunk beds, in which the kids slept two or more to a mattress. They stored what little they had on the top bunks, but it didn’t look as if they had a selection of clothes to choose from.

Their lunch was a millet porridge, something we also had on our hike. It was bland, but not bad, and made a good part of a healthy breakfast. Still, I wouldn’t want it to be the only thing I ate for lunch.

Most of the kids ate out of plastic cups, but at least one was eating from one of the new Frisbees they had received that day.

The orphanage had a corn mill on-site to process corn brought in by local farmers, or grown on the orphanage property. It was left to dry on tarps in the middle of the playground, but that didn’t stop

the kids from playing. The soccer game continued right over top of the corn that was drying there.

I’m still not sure what the success rate of adopting out the kids is. I do know that adopting a Tanzanian child from Canada is difficult. The website I visited that night said that there was a three-year residency requirement for adoption.

That’s something I think about now, when I look at our spare room, or hear my kids say they have nothing to eat as they stand in front of an open refrigerator, or when I see the large piles of laundry stacked up here compared to the small piles I saw there.

So my visit to make a positive impact, however brief, on a sad and dirty group of kids turned into them making a lasting impact on me.

The good times they shared with me are something that will last in my mind for a long, long time to come.

Beyond the information on the Kilimanjaro Orphanage Centre website (http://www. kiliorphanage.com), I have since found out that about 75 percent of the kids there were indeed orphaned by AIDS, the balance by malaria and other causes.

At the time I visited at least two of the children had AIDS as well. There are currently 45 children staying at the centre, and so far adopting out the children has not been successful.

I am pretty sure at least one adoption was hampered by the three-year residency requirement (Tammy assured me we had room for Rama).

The Centre has plans to develop a new property that will be able to house up to 100 kids. The 17-acre property has already been purchased. If all goes according to plan, water will be taken care of this year, electricity next and construction the following year.

The cost of this project is estimated at about $350,000.

Dealing with Injuries

T

My kids would have to start giving me time outs rather than the other way around.

Many experienced runners/ athletes give the sage advice not to rush back into it or try to “play through the pain”, because if you don’t deal with an injury properly, it’ll nag you for much longer than it could or should.

I visited the doctor and physio—key partners in making you well—and both said the knee is structurally sound (phew!) and it shouldn’t take long to get back to running.

That was five weeks ago. It is coming along, but much more slowly than I had hoped.

Another friend’s partner put it in perspective. She’s currently pregnant with twins and has been through labour twice before.

Her other half, a hardcore triathlete/runner has gone through similar injuries in the past and she knows what it is like to have a grumpy-guts in the house.

Her reality check was something to the effect of: “You try carrying these kids for nine months and then going through labour. Want to talk about not being able to train? Pain? You guys need to suck it up!”

Point taken.

There are many ways to put it into perspective. I was back to walking relatively pain free after a couple of weeks. That’s a gift, as was the ability to run in the first place.

An injury like this allows for cross training and other low-impact training. It could be much, much worse.

I first felt the pull in my knee on my Saturday run and thought it was just minor muscle fatigue.

Then about 3km into my Sunday run, a sharp pain told me my run was over. I walked from there and it only got worse so I stopped completely and called my partner for a ride.

Every long-term runner deals with an inevitable injury. So far in my four years I’ve luckily dodged anything major. Had a few aches and pains that made me take a week off, but nothing like this.

My knee had me gasping just walking up the stairs. This one was going to take some time to heal.

In the interest of full disclosure, I think I inadvertently caused this injury by attempting to learn how to long board. My 34-year-old exterior doesn’t always match my 16-year-old brain.

Mention an injury like this to other runners and walkers and their stories start to come out as they give words of encouragement, support and advice.

They, too, have had injuries that have required rest, physio or, even worse, surgery. They know what it means not to be able to do what you love and to face a long recovery.

A couple of weeks into my layoff, one of my good running friends asked me, “Have you reached the miserable/grumpy/ cantankerous stage where you are craving that run that the knee just says no freaking way to?”

He himself went through a knee injury that hobbled him for a year. He advised my partner that it would be a good idea to find

A f t e r three weeks of rest (aka moping) I started riding the bicycle, pool running and circuit training—basically any activity that wouldn’t bother my knee.

I’ve read about other athletes who have gone through similar recoveries and learned to appreciate the importance of cross training for overall better fitness. They usually make the cross training part of their routine from there out.

Admittedly, I’ve become so enamored with running, I haven’t done much else. There are other muscles that need to be worked and cross training needs to be done. This is a great reminder.

Running is a long game. Mileage is built up over years, as is speed. Setbacks happen. I accepted this week that the next race that I’ve signed up for isn’t going to happen.

The good news is that there is a multitude of races to shoot for down the road, including a 10K run with my partner (her first!) to celebrate our anniversary later in the summer.
